Subject area Brand Management, Branding Strategy, Strategic Management. Study level/applicability The case study is suitable for postgraduate management programs, such as MBA, Executive MBA and executive development programs. Case overview This case study provides a detailed analysis of Amazon India’s branding strategy by way of analyzing popular branding campaigns such as “Try to kar”, “Aur Dikhao”, “Kya Pehnu” and “Apni Dukaan” that enabled the global brand to reach to the masses of Tier-II and Tier-III cities in India. Facing fierce competition from existing market leaders such as Flipkart and Snapdeal, Amazon India strategizes to attract Indian consumers by rightly capturing their behavior in terms of demanding “highest power of options”, “fashion choices”, “originality” and “trust” with its local flavored advertisement campaigns enabling it to create a “trusted, reliable and local” brand identity. With the help of sufficient data and numbers about the industry, company and competitors, the analysis presents a clear picture of the current status of Amazon in the Indian e-commerce space and leaves the readers with food for thought concerning whether this “culture-specific” branding strategy will enable Amazon to become the number one choice for Indian online shoppers in the near future. Expected learning outcomes This case study helps students to understand how global MNCs use unique branding strategies to capture mass-markets in e-commerce business, the role of culture-specific aspects in developing differentiation strategies and the role of local flavors in branding strategies and internationalization. E-retailing has emerged as a significant player in the retail industry in India. The major cutthroat competition happens between Flipkart, Amazon, and Snap deal. These merchants have a significant competitive edge on electronic goods over other merchants in Indian online shopping portals. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to understand and analyses the universal perception and satisfaction quotient of customers in India concerning to the purchase of electronic goods via these e-commerce merchants. We have used hypothesis testing and analysis of variance to understand customer satisfaction and customer perception. The results show that overall customer satisfaction is the highest for Flipkart. Also, the physical appeal and the quality of the product are the main reasons which impact the customer's perception toward not shopping online. This study is original in itself because it is limited to the purchase of electronic goods only from the emerging e-retail merchants- Flipkart, Snap deal, and Amazon in India.

What can researchers do to address anomalous survey and experimental responses on Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk)? Much of the anomalous response problem has been traced to India, and several survey and technological techniques have been developed to detect foreign workers accessing US-specific surveys. We survey Indian MTurkers and find that 26% pass survey questions used to detect foreign workers, and 3% claim to be located in the United States. We show that restricting respondents to Master Workers and removing the US location requirement encourages Indian MTurkers to correctly self-report their location, helping to reduce anomalous responses among US respondents and to improve data quality. Based on these results, we outline key considerations for researchers seeking to maximize data quality while keeping costs low.

Abstract: Web series and online streaming content has become an integral part of everyday life. Web series and online streaming platforms have seen a great hike in the recent years in India; they have already pretty much replaced the television in western countries, and India is not far behind. Since the last decade, India has also seen a boom in web series and online streaming content produced in the country. The millennials have become glued to the OTT platforms which have led to many big companies like Amazon, Netflix, SonyLIV, Hotstar, zee5, MX Player, Eros Now and a host of like companies to invest heavily in regional content to increase the content variety and diversity. The race to create more content to attract viewers has resulted in major decline of the quality of content or rather has led to compromise of the value-added content in Indian web series on OTT platforms. This research paper consists of analysis of the content of various Indian web series and online steaming content on platforms like YouTube, Amazon, Netflix, SonyLIV, Hotstar, and MX Player etc. This research article examines the language being used in Indian web series with a focus on obscenity and vulgarity. The analysis shows that the content in Indian web series across various OTT platforms irrespective of the genre is obscene, and abusive in terms of the verbal and visual language. The article recommends an in-depth study on the relationship between vulgarity in the online streaming content and its impact on the audience

Gupta, Neha. "An ethnographic study of crowdwork via Amazon Mechanical Turk in India". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2017. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/41062/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
With the growth of ubiquitous computing, it is becoming increasingly easy to carry out work from anywhere, using a simple computing device that can connect you to the internet. Governments, policy makers, not-for-profit and scientific organizations have been reaching out to members of the general public - citizens, popularly known as the ‘crowd’, to get their ideas, opinions and expertise on various matters. This phenomenon of using the expertise of the ‘crowd’ for different purposes is called ‘crowdsourcing’. For sometime now businesses have been looking for new ways of saving money, beyond outsourcing, for their organizations; and have thus started reaching out to the crowd, through various platforms online to get access to a cheap, mobile workforce that is presumably available round the clock. Employing the crowd comes with massive benefits for such organisations that choose to use them: the crowd-workers serve as contractors or daily workers, who do not receive standard employee benefits such as holiday pay and insurance, as well as, pay for their own primary resources – the internet, computer, infrastructural and subsistence costs. There is also no current legislation that provides guidelines regarding such type of work, although there are quite a few researchers and advocacy groups now trying to change this. For the workers, crowdsourcing provides opportunities to make money, get exposure towards developing skills, learning to work and see a world outside their own all thanks to growth in tele-communication technologies and unstable employment patterns around the world. And although there is a lot of discourse surrounding crowdsourcing and crowdwork, particularly due to the legal aspect of such work, not much is understood about the work and the workers. Questions about this workforce remain unanswered such as: why does the crowd choose to do this type of work, how do they find these crowdsourcing platforms and crowdsourced jobs, what do they look for in the jobs they pick, how they organized their activities (both work and non-work), what tools and technologies they used, what might their concerns be as workers, how do they relate to requesters and the work platform? This thesis aims to provide insights into the work of crowdwork, what entails ‘doing crowdwork’, from the perspective of the workers who partake in crowdsourced work through online platforms. The thesis presents insights from an ethnographic study conducted in India through the summer of 2013, of crowdworkers, with a particular focus on Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) as the principle site for work. The naturalistic data was collected from virtual and in-person interviews as well as observations of crowdworkers in their places of work and dwelling, and analysed with an ethnomethodological orientation to data, to uncover the local methods of the workers in their own words, to provide more information about this understudied cohort. Learning about crowdwork and the workers is important because this type of work has potential from an organizational perspective; a variety of relatively low-skilled work such as data entry processing, tagging, information verification, transcription and translation are being (and could be) crowdsourced by medium and large organisations. Hence this thesis makes contributions to the fields of human computation, CSCW, HCI and crowdsourcing by bringing forth insights into ‘doing crowdwork’ and ‘being a crowdworker’, which might help parties interested in using, applying or designing for crowdsourced work and crowdsourcing platforms, as well as, researchers and designers interested in this field. The contributions of the thesis include: • Uncovering the heterogeneity in the motives of turkers: what motivates workers to work on platforms like AMT, and why they choose to continue their engagement with such work and platforms. • The features of the crowdsourcing platform: what made a platform attractive to the turkers? For instance, features such as ease of use and flexibility in choosing work, played an important role in crowdsourcing. • The social nature of work: although crowdwork is highly individualized and atomic, the nature of work itself was very social. Most workers found that they needed help for one thing or the other and found online resources such as forums and Facebook groups to get support or information regarding work and personal life. • Invisible work and constant contingency management undertaken by the crowdworkers: Workers had to find and do work while managing contingencies that were created due to the opaque nature of the platform studied, AMT; requiring them to seek help externally, e.g by means of browser plug-ins, to help them work around this opacity, at the same time, creating more unpaid work for them.

Dewey, Janice Laraine. "The myth of the Amazon woman in Latin American literatures and cultures". Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185579.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This study explores evocations of the concept of the "Amazon Woman" and her female tribe, from cross-continental prehistoric sources to contemporary ritual practice within native amerindian belief systems of the rain forests of South America. The designation "Amazon" for the world's largest river has often been considered a grand "mistake" made by sixteenth century explorers; imaginative portrayals of Amazons had invigorated the reports of numerous early travelers, including Marco Polo, Columbus, and Hernan Cortes. This analysis establishes the importance of a reconsideration of the Amazon "mistake," or the idea that Europeans were projecting the fantastical worlds and dramatic personae of classical Greek legends and later romances of chivalry onto the realms of New World daily experience. The deep roots of prehistoric and historic civilizations carry the fragmentary genesis of matristic views of the world--the Mother, deified as Warrior, is a constant sign and symbol interplaying within the semiotics of the Amazon. The amazons of the New World were both ancient sister kin and actual tribal homosocial units who played vital roles in sacred religious beliefs and clan organization. I read the corpus of chronicles on, and studies of, the question of Amazons through a multi-faceted and multidisciplinary lense: archeology, history, anthropology, ethnography, mythology, literary criticism, and the sciences all intertwine to provide a more wholistic view of the subject. The text of the Amazons is clarified here by the consideration of prehistoric fragment upon fragment, reuniting five tribal narratives from the rain forests of South America, which reconstitutes the overall corpus of the Amazon mythos in Latin America. An autobiographical opening juxtaposes the continuum between the personal and cultural microstructures of my own approach to this subject with the macrostructures of the socio-symbolic order generally, and keeps a double focus constantly at play throughout the entire analytical text. Finally, Amazons are defined as evocations of natural phenomena and the diversity of animal and human behaviors as represented in mythical, cultural, and social spheres. This thesis comprises a literary analytical process I define as "ecotextuality": the reading of biotic diversity through its multiple languages, not excluding the "I" of the reader/writer.

This research develops a new concept for people-to-people contacts, formulates a theoretical model to assess the impact of people-to-people contacts on peacebuilding, and draws theoretical modifications and explanations in the model on the basis of its empirical application on India-Pakistan conflict and Northern Ireland conflict. The new concept of interactive people-to-people contacts (IPPC) is developed and it is differentiated from the similar concepts in peace theory. Then ontological and epistemological foundations of IPPC are determined and the roots of IPPC in peace and conflict theories are traced. To empirically assess the role played by IPPC in building peace, the web approach model is developed from Lederach’s “pyramid” of peacebuilding as formulated in Building Peace (1997) and later improved in The Moral Imagination (2005). The web approach model is applied on Northern Ireland conflict to empirically test the web approach model and make improvements in the model learning from the practice of IPPC in Northern Ireland conflcit. Then web approach model is applied on two selected case studies of PIPFPD and Aman ki Asha to empirically asses the role played by IPPC in building peace between India and Pakistan. The web approach model is used to determine the stage/frame of the web process where IPPC based peacebuilding have reached so far in India-Pakistan conflict. Acoustic variations in animal vocalizations may carry codifications of motivation, which in social species may improve communication among and between groups. The Amazon river dolphin, or boto, are considered acoustically quiet animals, but are capable of producing may sounds. The behavioral contexts and functions of these vocalizations are still unclear, as well as the species vocal repertoire. The goals of this study were to describe the botos vocal repertoire and verify if vocalizations corresponds to specific behavioral contexts. Acoustic recordings and behavioral observations were made in three different floating-houses were in-water interactions with these animals occur, in the lower Negro river region, between May to August 2014. In these sites, wild boto aggregations are formed due to offer of fish. Each site has different animals, that are recognized by marks and scarring patterns. Simple and robust acoustic parameters were measured and analyzed through acoustic softwares. Acoustic variables did not differ among the three sites, but did significantly varied among behavioral contexts. The peak frequency at the fundamental (PFF) and max frequency (MF) in aggressive behavioral contexts were much lower than in other contexts. The vocal repertoire of this species is compound of gradations and transitions and are occasionally difficult to separate into discrete call types. Botos changed their behavior due to interactions with humans and the use of supplementary feeding. At the oldest location of interaction, the probability of animals to stay in aggressive behavior increased. Animals remain close to the floating most of the time. This might be due to the sensitisation to supplementary feeding. Botos have been conditioned to human contact due to the use of supplementary feeding as a means of attraction. We suggest management measures to ensure the quality of tourism and animal welfare.

Information on habitat use and population density are essential to understand the population dynamics of a specie. They are also important for guiding conservation and management measures. In the Amazon, due to its proximity to human populations, river dolphins are considered endangered species. However, according to the IUCN, there is limited amount of information on threats, ecology, estimates and population trends for the Amazon river and Tucuxi dolphins. In order to fill this gap, the present study investigated the population density and distribution of these dolphins in the lower Negro River, verifying the existence of preference for habitats and areas of higher density. The study was carried out in the lower Negro river region, comprising the municipalities of Novo Airão and Manaus. Two visual surveys were carried out in 2016: one in the flood period (April) and another in the lowing (October) period. Two vessels were used: a regional boat with length of 16m with two floors and a small boat with 15hp engine. For counting, two survey methodologies were used: 200m strip transects in river margins and linear transects, using distance sampling, in the center of the river. In the flood period (April), there were 298 sightings, with 195 boto dolphins and 333 tucuxis, with a general encounter rate of 0.91 individual/km, being 0.34 botos/km and 0.57 tucuxi/km. In the lowing period (October), 276 sightings were made, with 195 botos and 244 tucuxis, with a general encounter rate of 1.08 individuals/km, with 0.48 boto/km and 0.60 tucuxi/km. During the flood, the stratum "lake" had a higher density of botos (D = 2.4 ind/km 2) and lower density of tucuxis (D = 1.0 ind/km 2). In the lowing period, the "paranã" stratum showed higher density of both botos (D = 2.3 ind/km 2) and tucuxis (D = 2.6 ind/km 2). The uneven distribution of a species, observed along an area, is probably the result of an uneven distribution of resources, driven by topographic variation or habitat fragmentation. Despite the high diversity of fish, the Negro River presents some factors that limit the abundance of existing species, such as low levels of nutrients (oligotrophy), caused by the flood pulse and low productivity of animal and plant biomass. In addition, estimates of densities are hampered by the discrete behavior of dolphins and their high mobility. This study is the first attempt to estimate the population of botos and tucuxis in the lower Negro River. We expect that the results could serve as a basis for future research and effective conservation measures.

Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest forms of marketing in which one refers someone to any online product (Open Topic, n.d.). When the consumer buys this product on the basis of the given recommendation, then the person who has referred him receives a commission. This commission could vary from $1 to $10000, on the basis of the type of product which has been referred (Open Topic, n.d.). The rapid development of the term “Affiliate marketing” which is a performance based internet marketing practice, has made the online selling market even more competitive. Many companies are now venturing into the forming or improving their affiliate programs and giving higher incentives to keep the affiliates loyal. This study is a qualitative study about the Affiliate program presently run by Amazon Company.

Abstract Beleaguered online marketplace Snapdeal is going through troubled breaks. Struggling to raise fresh capital, confuting against internal conflicts, once an e-commerce major Snapdeal has decided to stop all noncore actions, reduce costs, and handover pink slips to employees to turn cost-effective. Earlier Snapdeal was the second best alternative for people after Flipkart but the emergence and rapid growth of Amazon gave people a better alternative. When Amazon entered in 2016 with an additional $3 billion investment in India, it made clear its intention to dominate the Indian market and pose a massive challenge for home ground e-commerce companies, among which Snapdeal became extremely unhappy and didn’t keep up the tempo. Recently, the brand saw the brunt of Snapchat CEO’s ‘poor India’ comment and lost its brand image due to confusion. Previously the start-up had gone almost through the similar situation; getting blowback from Aamir Khan Controversy. Here, in this case study, we will get to know the mistakes made by Snapdeal, raising a valid question of what is wrong with the Indian start-up.

The culture of India is ancient, close to 5000 years old, and is very unique, diverse and different from the western cultures – India's languages, food, clothing, customs vary from place to place within the country reflecting the cultures of all religions and communities living in India. The diverse food habits, consumer tastes and preferences, consumer lifestyles, communication styles, language barriers, perception and attitudes of Indians, all have a major impact on the strategies and marketing mix (4Ps), elements of products and services marketed in India. An effort should be made to understand the culture when doing business in India. Major MNCs like Amazon, IKEA, Starbucks, Uber, Pizza Hut, McDonalds, have expanded their businesses to India after customizing their products to the Indian sub-continent. This proposed chapter aims to provide insights into the diverse Indian culture and language system. The study will examine the differences between the eastern and western cultures and their business implications.

Abstract Flipkart is not an Indian company since it is registered in Singapore and majority of its shareholders are foreigners. Because foreign companies are not allowed to do multi-brand e-retailing in India, Flipkart sells goods in India through a company called WS Retail. Other third-party sellers or companies can also sell goods through the Flipkart platform. Flipkart now employs more than 15,000 people. Flipkart allows payment methods such as cash on delivery, credit or debit card transactions, net banking, e-gift voucher, and card swipe on delivery. On 15 September 2007, Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal (not related) started Flipkart as an online bookstore. The two had known each other since 2005 when they attended the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) together and were colleagues at Amazon briefly. Eleven years later, the world’s largest retailer, Walmart, has agreed to buy a controlling stake in the company, Softbank chief executive officer Masayoshi Son said today (09 May). Flipkart’s journey has been nothing short of a roller-coaster ride. The company went from record-breaking investments and an acquisition spree to failed business experiments and devaluations—only to bounce back.

During the eighteenth century Portugal developed a large military construction process in the Ultramarine possessions, in order to compete with the new born colonial trading empires, mainly Great Britain, Netherlands and France. The Portuguese colonial seashores of the Atlantic Ocean (since the middle of the sixteenth century) and of the Indian Ocean (from the end of the first quarter of the seventeenth century) were repeatedly coveted, and the huge Portuguese colony of Brazil was also harassed in the south during the eighteenth century –here due to problems in a diplomatic and military dispute with Spain, related with the global frontiers’ design of the Iberian colonies. The Treaty of Madrid (1750) had specifically abrogated the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) between Portugal and Spain, and the limits of Brazil began to be defined on the field. Macapá is situated in the western branch of Amazonas delta, in the singular cross-point of the Equator with Tordesillas Meridian, and the construction of a big fortress began in the year of 1764 under direction of Enrico Antonio Galluzzi, an Italian engineer contracted by Portuguese administration to the Commission of Delimitation, which arrived in Brazil in 1753. In consequence of the political panorama in Europe after the Seven Years War (1756-1763), a new agreement between Portugal and Spain was negotiated (after the regional conflict in South America), achieved to the Treaty of San Idefonso (1777), which warranted the integration of the Amazonas basin. It was strategic the decision to build, one year before, the huge fortress of Príncipe da Beira, arduously realized in the most interior of the sub-continent, 2000 km from the sea throughout the only possible connection by rivers navigation. Domingos Sambucetti, another Italian engineer, was the designer and conductor of the jobs held on the right bank of Guaporé River, future frontier’s line with Bolivia. São José de Macapá and Príncipe da Beira are two big fortresses Vauban’ style, built under very similar projects by two Italian engineers (each one dead with malaria in the course of building), with the observance of the most exigent rules of the treaties of military architecture.

Streszczenie:
On behalf of the organizers and sponsors of the 4th International Clinical Engineering & Health Technology Management Congress (ICEHTMC), it is our honor to offer this publication that contains all of the abstracts accepted for the oral sessions in this Congress. Through the amazing support received from the Scientific Program Committee, consisting of several dozen experienced reviewers from all over the world, all of the submissions received were subjected to strict peer review process. This made the Congress’s scientific program an event that exceeded all previous Congress records for quality, quantity, and registration. Major recognition must be given to the unique cooperation between the Global Clinical Engineering Alliance (GCEA), the IFMBE Clinical Engineering Division (IFMBE CED), and AAMI for hosting and collaborating on the organization of this event. Especially, since due to the curtail of international travel during this COVID-19 era, the organizers had to convert the Congress from in-person to a global virtual congress, a first for the international clinical engineering field. The unabated commitment of organizers led by Tom Judd and Yadin David who were endlessly supported by Kallirroi Stavrianou, and Luis Fernandez resulted in the engagement of Clinical Engineering practitioners from around the world, including pre-recording of over 200 presentations. Keynote presentations included globally recognized speakers from the World Health Organization, India and the USA. Support and presentations from sponsors Zoom for Healthcare, R-Zero, Healiom, and Schiller Americas provided a unique opportunity for global health technology shared learning and professional networking. This is the second time that the Congress’s proceedings are published and available in on-line format (GlobalCE.org). The Global Clinical Engineering Journal’s commitment to the promotion and sharing of knowledge is evident through its commitment to timely publication of subjects at the cross between engineering, technology, and patient care outcomes. These proceedings are a great accomplishment that well serve the ongoing and growing Global Clinical Engineering publication task. Conducting a virtual Congress presents a different stage and an opportunity to engage with more members within our field as well as with other stakeholders around professional development, scientific debate, networking, strengthening friendships, and learning more about best practices from places we cannot yet visit in person. We thank all the participants and are confident that you will find these proceedings useful. We wish you success and hope to meet you at our next Congress.
