Post-operative outcomes after simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty in 115 patients randomly assigned to two rehabilitation protocols were compared. The traditional-protocol group performed a series of exercises on one leg and then repeated the same sequence on the other leg. The alternate-protocol group performed the same exercises, but alternated between legs with each individual repetition. Symptoms and function were assessed pre-operatively and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-operatively. The alternate-protocol group had lower visual analogue pain scale scores in the early post-operative period, as well as higher Knee Society Scores and SF-12 physical and mental health summary scores after 1 and 3 months compared with the traditional-protocol group, but there were no differences between the two groups from 6 months post-operatively. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of range of knee motion or incidence of deep vein thrombosis. The alternate-protocol for rehabilitation resulted in an early return to function and decreased pain levels following simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty and was associated with the potential to produce more positive emotional states and earlier functional independence.

Legal system forces every economic agent operating on the market to fulfil some amount of duties and it alternates their decision making. This regulation moves the equilibria of each individual subject including firms, which have to adjust their production plans in a way prescribed by the law. We develop a theoretical background of production under the legal regulation and compare alternate equilibria with different degrees of legal regulation, which is described as unproductive in economic literature. The model shows that regulated production plans and all used inputs are still productive but the level of satisfaction within the society is decreased.

The prosperity and peace of a society much or less depends on its financial system. While for the smooth running of society and its matters, there are several instructions in Islamic Shariah and allows what's proper and forbids what is inaccurate. When we communicate the economic problems, Islamic Shariah strictly condemns interest. The question may additionally stand up why Islam prohibits interest; while it was already in practice earlier than the advent of Islam. This paper is an attempt to clear that the prohibition of interest in Islam is just for the sake of humanity and society. Therefore, Islam provides alternate ways for the welfare and stability of a society. Interest is not only forbidden in Islam but monetary specialists also are searching for its alternative. In this paper we're discussing how interest causes imbalance in the society and as an alternative what Islam suggests to its followers.

Cyberpunk literature encapsulates the genre's essence by representing technology integration and human existence in a dark, impending future. It shows a society rife with disparities and introduces unconventional heroes who navigate a world where the boundaries between the virtual and tangible realms. The primary objective of this research is to examine the representations of Virtual Reality and Alternate Reality in cyberpunk literature, mainly focusing on Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash." The focus lies on how this significant work illustrates the portrayal of virtual and alternate realities in American science fiction, viewed through Postmodernism Literary Theory. An extensive discussion revealed that "Snow Crash" is a platform for addressing societal issues through its sturdy framework, examination of human interactions, and ethical considerations. It allows writers to explore intricate ideas, particularly emphasizing the significance of technology and scientific advancement. This exploration delves into the transformative potential of technology on society, ethics, and human experience, allowing for insightful social commentary. Also, "Snow Crash" mirrors societal shifts in scientific, technological, social, and cultural aspects affected by economic systems like mass consumerism and multinational capitalism. It embodies a paradigm that vividly portrays postmodern ideology, challenging established notions, especially concerning identity, within postmodern societies. Finally, the study's implications and limitations are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Context.— HER2 status is a prognostic factor and therapeutic target in invasive breast carcinomas. Reflex testing using an alternate method is recommended on equivocal cases via immunohistochemistry or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Therapeutic dilemmas arise when both tests are equivocal. The standard chromosome 17 centromere reference probe (CEP17) is in close proximity to the HER2 locus and may be coamplified, leading to equivocal results. Alternate chromosome 17 reference probes may aid in establishing the true HER2 status. Objective.— To describe our institutional experience using D17S122 probe for reflex FISH testing on double-equivocal invasive breast carcinomas and review the literature on alternate reference probes. Data Sources.— Twenty-two patients with double-equivocal invasive breast carcinomas, defined as HER2 immunohistochemistry score 2+ and FISH equivocal per the 2013 guidelines, were reviewed. Reflex FISH was performed with alternate probe D17S122 and the HER2 status classified for 11 cases by using a revised HER2:D17S122 ratio. Seven of 11 cases (63.6%) were ultimately classified as HER2 positive, while 4 cases (36.4%) remained equivocal. The 7 positive cases showed a HER2:D17S122 greater than 2.0. Conclusions.— Alternate probe D17S122 reclassified more than half of our cases as HER2 positive. Alternate probes may establish true HER2 status and direct proper management, as evidenced by our experience and the literature. Additional investigation is needed to determine which alternate probe(s) is(are) best for reflex testing. Finally, the American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists guidelines may need to be updated to reflect more specific recommendations for the utilization of appropriate probes in double-equivocal HER2 cases.

Alternate Dispute Resolution scheme is not a novel idea; rather it existed in diverse forms throughout history. These forms have been shaped by certain fundamental principles, aiming to provide socio-legal security to society in conjunction with the formal justice system. Many countries have adopted this complementary system as support to their judicial systems for needs of society. In order to assimilate this informal judicial system into, proper mechanism need to be established through legislation. However, instead of providing a comprehensive legislative framework, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government has implemented an indemnified bureaucratic system, which crafted a pathway for sluggish litigation. This paper critically examines existing alternate dispute resolution mechanism of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Instead of supporting the existing adjudicating system, it undermines efficacy of existing legislations by ignoring role of stakeholders having experience and knowledge in the process of dispensation of justice. Therefore, it is suggested that apposite, bifurcated laws with discrete regulations be enacted for different categories of disputes. Furthermore, this mechanism should be implemented through the existing justice system to establish a dynamic framework for alternative dispute resolution. This approach will inculcate confidence in society, enabling them to embrace alternative dispute resolution without hesitation. Context.—In 2013 the American Society of Clinical Oncology and College of American Pathologists updated the HER2 guidelines and changed the equivocal category for HER2 in situ hybridization testing to an average HER2 copy number of 4.0 to 5.9 with a HER2:CEP17 ratio of less than 2.0 and proposed retesting, with an option of using another control probe to avoid false-negative results. RAI1, located at band position 17p11.2, is a popular alternate probe locus for retesting equivocal changes. Objective.—To review experience with the RAI1 alternate probe in HER2 fluorescence in situ hybridization equivocal breast cancers. Design.—Primary and metastatic breast cancers with equivocal HER2 fluorescence in situ hybridization, retested with an alternate (RAI1) probe, were identified. HER2, RAI1, and CEP17 copy numbers, HER2 to control probe ratios, and genetic heterogeneity were recorded. Hematoxylin-eosin–stained slides were reviewed for type and grade of cancer. Results.—Of 876 cases tested with CEP17 as the reference probe, 97 (11.1%) had equivocal HER2 fluorescence in situ hybridization results. Additional testing with the RAI1 probe classified 39.2% cases (38 of 97) as amplified with a HER2:RAI1 ratio ranging from 2.0 to 3.2 (mean, 2.37); 3.1% (3 of 97) were still unclassifiable because of a deletion of RAI1. Conclusions.—RAI1 identified close to 40% of original HER2 fluorescence in situ hybridization equivocal cases as amplified, making these patients eligible for targeted therapies. It is not known whether guidelines for US Food and Drug Administration–approved probes can be extrapolated to alternate probes when an alternate control probe shows losses or gains. Because of the lack of guidelines for reporting HER2 status with alternate probes, laboratories face challenges in interpreting results.

The concept of the ‘Great Chain of Being’, which influences the narrative style of the Renaissance Period of English Literature, depicts the hierarchical state of the old English Society. Suggestively, it’s a society driven by class/status and its attendant structures of inequality, discrimination and oppression. Hence, literary narratives of this period revolve round the travails of Kings and nobles, while subjecting the common men to the background. Subsequently, the esoteric state of the society, which was usually captured from the third person point of view, helps to question the place of truth in these literary narratives, as they could be liken to glossary reports from spectators, devoid of participant’ direct contribution(s). However, with the writing(s) of Kazuo Ishiguro, an Asian-British, there comes a direct feel of participant’s contribution in his narratives as he deconstructs the style of the old traditional English narratives in his novel, The Remains of the Day. Consequently, with the application of the first-person point of view in his novel, readers could explore the socio-cultural dispositions of every society and individual within the purview of ethics, politics and development. In furtherance, this study gives a historicized spatial alternate or temporal reality of an Old English society system - a system anchored on classism, professionalism and superficial orderliness devoid of ‘social interactions’ and freedom, especially for the workmen or common men. The emergence of an American Lord after the death of the English Lord gives a contrastive alternative pattern against that of the English. Hence, this alternate reflection of the American presence further deconstructs every long-held tradition in Darlington’s Hall as the author reveals that perceptions are influenced by cultural ingenuity which borders on the socio-cultural/socio-political formation of every society and individuals.

Most language acquisition research to date focuses on monolingual infants. In American society there is a burgeoning population of bilingual families where infants must learn the nuances of two languages simultaneously. To extend understanding of language development to this population, research specific to bilingual infants is needed. This study investigates 19-20 month old infants’ abilities to understand English when exposed to varying levels of alternate languages, including Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Punjabi, Serbo-Croatian, Spanish, and Urdu. Participants included 26 babies whose language exposure consisted of at least 99% English, and 22 babies exposed to English and at least 15% of an alternate language. Infants’ English noun comprehension was measured using the Intermodal Preferential Looking Paradigm. During a four minute session, infants’ gazes were tracked while they looked at simultaneous images, one of which corresponded to a spoken English noun. Before or afterwards, parents identified which of the 16 trial words they believed their infants were able to understand and say. Comparisons were made through two-tailed t-tests that assumed unequal variances. Results showed that infants whose daily language exposure consists of 15-39% of an alternate language understood more English nouns than infants exposed to 40-90% of an alternate language and more than monolinguals. Comparisons of parental reports of infants’ speech similarly showed that infants exposed to higher levels of alternate language said fewer English nouns than infants exposed to lower levels of alternate language and fewer than monolingual infants. Validity of parental reports was evaluated through comparisons of parental estimations and experimental results. Monolingual parents reported higher levels of English comprehension than infants showed in the experimental task, while parents of bilinguals did not demonstrate this effect. Possible explanations for these results are discussed in light of past research and implications for English acquisition of bilingual children are considered.

Pakistan's alternative dispute resolution landscape faces challenges and variations in effectiveness across regions. While Islamabad exhibits successful implementation due to factors like education, ADR facilities, and government support, Punjab and KPK encounter obstacles like limited access, scarcity of skilled practitioners, cultural influences, and economic considerations. The research underscores the need for a concerted effort to address these challenges and promote ADR awareness, emphasizing the importance of government, civil society and stakeholders in ensuring widespread acceptance and accessibility. As outlined in this research below, ADR offers advantages over traditional court systems. This includes party control, confidentiality, time and cost savings, expertise, finality of awards and societal benefits. The paper further underscores the evolution of ADR, incorporating online platforms and virtual mediation sessions to enhance accessibility of efficiency. In the broader context of legal frameworks, the study compares ADR Acts in Islamabad, Punjab, and KPK. While similarities exist, differences in scope, the role of ADR centers, the concept of Saliseen that are present in KPK and no such concept in the other two Acts, and dispute types are notable. The effectiveness of these acts varies, requiring a nuanced approach to implementations and awareness campaigns tailored to regional nuance. Ultimately, the research concludes with a forward-looking perspective on the potential transformative impacts of ADR in Pakistan. Emphasizing its role in fostering economic growth, reducing legal costs, and promoting fairness, the study envisions a society where ADR has become a widely accepted and accessible mechanism for dispute resolution.

Humanity is confronted with one of the most significant challenges in its history. The excessive use of fossil fuel energy sources is causing extreme climate change, which threatens our way of life and poses huge social and technological problems. It is imperative to look for alternate energy sources that can replace environmentally destructive fossil fuels. In this scenario, hydrogen is seen as a potential energy vector capable of enabling the better and synergic exploitation of renewable energy sources. A brief review of the use of hydrogen as a tool for decarbonizing our society is given in this work. Special emphasis is placed on the possibility of storing hydrogen in solid-state form (in hydride species), on the potential fields of application of solid-state hydrogen storage, and on the technological challenges solid-state hydrogen storage faces. A potential approach to reduce the carbon footprint of hydrogen storage materials is presented in the concluding section of this paper.

Context PathVysion—a US Food and Drug Administration–approved dual-probe human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2) fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) assay—provides the HER2:CEP17 ratio, a centromeric enumeration probe ratio for determining HER2 status in breast cancers. However, pericentromeric amplifications might then skew the HER2:CEP17 ratio, underestimating the HER2 status, which calls into question the use of CEP17 as the reference probe. Objective To analyze the utility of a noncentromeric chromosome 17 reference locus (D17S122) to assess HER2 gene status in cases showing “nonclassical” FISH patterns with the CEP17 probe. Design The HER2 status of breast cancers accessioned in the years 2015–2017, displaying “nonclassical” or “equivocal” results by the PathVysion (Abbott Molecular Inc, Des Plaines, Illinois) HER2 DNA Probe Kit were reflex tested using an alternate FISH probe (ZytoLight SPEC/D17S122, ZytoVision, Bremerhaven, Germany) and interpreted with American Society of Clinical Oncology/College of American Pathologists 2013 guidelines. Results Of 37 cases, 17 were FISH equivocal. With the alternate D17S122 probe, 13 (76.4%) were reclassified as amplified, 3 (17.6%) as nonamplified, and a single case retained an equivocal result. Of the 17 cases with a chromosome 17 polysomy pattern, disomy, polysomy, and monosomy patterns were seen with 14 cases, 2 cases, and 1 case, respectively. Within the 17 cases with polysomy pattern, 3 (17.6%) demonstrated an unusual colocalization pattern of HER2 and CEP17, which was not observed with the alternate probe. Conclusions The denominator-stable alternate probe is a useful adjunct in the diagnostic armamentarium to analyze HER2 status in cases with FISH equivocal and complex patterns.

Abstract Developing the critique of notions of the “integration of immigrants”, twelve propositions are advanced to diagnose the methodological nationalism of mainstream approaches. The concept of “integration” contains assumptions about the nature and functioning of modern society which, in a post-industrial and post-colonial context, are falsely trapped within the normative bounds of thinking for the nation-state. An alternate empirical operationalisation is suggested that would render traditional types of assimilation and integration research obsolete.

TD Ramakrishnan’s novel Sugandhi Enna Aandaal Devanayaki is a mixture of the mythological, metaphysical and historical into a fictional space which transcends the boundaries of nation. The novel is a quest for retelling the historical trauma of Sreelanka. In the search for Sugandhi a Tamil liberation activist, the narrator stumbles upon the mythical Sugandhi from the folklore, creating tension between faction and reality. In the search for the mythical Sugandhi Ramakrishnan uses ‘SusinaSupina’ and arrives at Devanayaki belonging to 7th century AD Pallava Dynasty. As fact, fiction and myth blur into the contemporary social space, the myth of Devanayaki merges with Rajani Thirinagame creating the notion of the alternate history from a female perspective. In the novel History blurs into myth, reality into fiction, contemporary into past, individual into society and body into spirit.TD Ramakrishnan deconstructs the millennium old Tamil- Sinhalese political history using the alternate history from mythology and folklore. This paper is an attempt to read the novel Sugandhi Enna AandaalDevanayaki as a Historiographic metafiction.

Throughout the globe (particularly in the global South), religious orthodoxy and their discriminatory intolerances are negatively impacting religious freedom of underserved populations, particularly those who practice/follow alternate spiritual praxis, like the Sufi and Bhakti performers from rural and geographically remote spaces of South Asia. Hindu and Islamic fundamentalist discourses/doctrines are propagating their conservative religious agendas and thereby creating tensions and separatism across the subcontinent. Such religious extremism is responsible for the threatening and even murdering of nonsectarian torchbearers, and their free thoughts. This study focused on various alternate communication strategies espoused by Sufi and bhakti performers and followers in order to negotiate and overcome their marginalized existence as well as to promote the plurality of voices and values in the society. This article identified the following communication strategies—innovative usages of language of inversion or enigmatic language; strategic camouflaging of authors’/writers’ identity, and intergenerational communication of discourses and spiritual values to ensure freedom and survival of their traditions.

AbstractCancer chemopreventive agents inhibit the formation of precursor lesions and/or the progression of these lesions to late stage disease. This approach to disease control has the potential to reduce the physical and financial costs of cancer in society. Several drugs that have been approved by the FDA for other diseases and have been extensively evaluated for their safety and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic characteristics have the potential to be repurposed for use as cancer chemopreventive agents. These agents often mechanistically inhibit signaling molecules that play key roles in the carcinogenic process. The safety profile of agents is a primary concern when considering the administration of drugs for chemoprevention, as the drugs will be given chronically to high-risk, asymptomatic individuals. To decrease drug toxicity while retaining efficacy, several approaches are currently being explored. In this short review, we describe studies that use preclinical in vivo models to assess efficacy of alternative drug dosing strategies and routes of drug administration on chemopreventive drug efficacy. In vivo drug dosing strategies that reduce toxicity while retaining efficacy will pave the way for future cancer prevention clinical trials.

It is a fallacy to believe that democracy originated in Ancient Greece, it wasn’t truly democratic by todays’ standards, however it was something that philosophers and thinkers of the enlightenment could hark back upon to deliver us the modern concept of western democracy. Indeed, it is a western democracy only and not a true world democracy that it should be, it failed to consider the democratic traditions that have existed all across human civilizations past and present, Institutions that have existed through millennia and continue to do so. The thinkers of western Europe used the romantic ideas of Greek democracy and tried to create an alternative to the despotic monarchies that existed at that time in Europe, but all they managed to do was substitute heredity with elections, the power institutions of the government as they were during the reign of monarchs continue to remain bureaucratic and powerful. This paper tries to examine the alternative institutional structure of Panchayats by looking at the cases of two Pani Panchayats, one Van Panchayat, one Kashtkari Panchayat and the Khap Panchayats of North West India; how they have evolved historically, and how and why are they socially embedded creating a natural basis for establishing direct democracy at the grassroots level. Upon the investigation of the above cases, it is found that not only do Panchayats divide and decentralise the exercise of power, but it also provides indigenous institutional legitimacy to such exercise. It enhances the participation of not just all, but more specifically the participation of the marginalised sections of the society (women and untouchables) in their local decision-making processes. The examination of the Khap Panchayats and their historical evolution also points to the fact that social institution of Panchayats is not perfect, and they require rationalised restructuring in order to achieve its goal of establishing truly democratic institution at the grassroots level. Finally concluding that a socially embedded democratic institution like the Panchayat in India that has evolved with the society itself is a more suitable democratic institution, which can form the basis of a truly responsible democratic government.

He calls this the “informal social sector” and contrasts it with a sector comprising formal organizations, which are more likely to be co-opted by the state.

In today's society, researchers around the world are searching for ways to develop alternate forms of fuel. With the ever-rising fuel costs, developing alternate energy is a top priority. Biodiesel was developed to combat the high gas and oil prices. It is especially made for use in diesel cars and trucks. Biodiesel can be made from all natural foods that can produce oil. Oils such as vegetable, canola, peanut, rapeseed, palm, and olive oil can be used as bio diesel fuel. Virtually all oils that are used in the kitchens everyday can fuel automobiles. Biodiesel fuel is better for the environment because it burns cleaner and does not pollute the atmosphere. It is non-toxic and biodegradable, making it the perfect fuel. Many car manufacturers are realizing that the bio diesel automobile is becoming more popular, and are jumping on the bandwagon, by developing their own version of a biodiesel vehicle. They realize that the need for these vehicles will increase, and predict that they will be ready for the onslaught. Diesel engines have superior fuel efficiencies, and hence they are predominantly used in commercial transportation and agricultural machinery. Due to the shortage of diesel fuel and its increasing costs, a need for an alternate source of fuel for diesel engines is imminent. This paper investigates the suitability of biodiesels as such an alternative with particular reference to automobiles. It reviews techniques used to produce biodiesel and provides a comprehensive analysis of the benefits of using biodiesel over other fuels.

Luis Valdez creates anomalous realities in two of his plays, The Shrunken Head of Pancho Villa and The Mummified Deer, in order to defy dominant expressions of reality as well as classifications of “Chicano” and “Mexican.” The anomalous realities, represented primarily by a bodiless head in the first play and an eighty-four-year-old Yaqui woman with a sixty-year-old fetus in her womb in the second play, alter audience members’ expectations and their identification with the characters. This alteration allows spectators to question their own classification and the ability to define it. Valdez’s performances of anomalous realities allow for an alternate space of expression where classifications can be challenged in terms not contaminated by dominant ideologies. The anomalous realities in these two plays present a departure from dominant modes of expression, a departure that resists an identity of closure and oversimplification that has been imposed on Chicana/os by a primarily Anglo American discourse. These two plays provide an alternate space for legitimizing and authorizing aspects of Chicana/o identities that Anglo American society marginalizes and/or occludes.

The QAnon movement, which gained a lot of traction in recent years, defies categorization: is it a conspiracy theory, a new mythology, a social movement, a religious cult, or an alternate reality game? How did the posts of a (supposedly) anonymous government insider named Q on an obscure online imageboard in October 2017 instigate a serious conspiracy movement taking part in the storming of the US Capitol in early 2021? Returning to the origins of QAnon on 4chan’s Politically Incorrect board and its initial reception as a potential LARP, we analyze it as an instance of participatory online play that fosters deep engagement above all. Drawing on concepts from play and performance studies, we theorize the dynamics by which QAnon developed into an influential conspiracy narrative as instances of “conspiracy fictioning.” In particular, we revive the notion of hyperstition to make sense of how such conspiracy fictionings work to recursively “bootstrap” their own alternate realities into existence. By thus exploring the participatory and playful engagement mechanisms that drive today’s conspiracy movements, we aim to elucidate the epistemological and socio-political dynamics that mark the growing entanglement of play and politics, fact and fiction in society.

First, it offers suggestions as to finding the extant empirical work necessary for informed analysis. This is followed by an examination of alternate methods of theory construction relevant to this topic, which transcend the limitations of the experimental science model of theory building. It then provides an example of a social science theory that exemplifies how empirically informed open theory can illuminate the dynamics behind growing inequality. The article concludes by suggesting that progress in this area requires embracing the spirit of earlier approaches to business and society scholarship while abandoning some outdated assumptions.

AbstractThis study examines civic solidarity in Hong Kong and Taiwan at key democratic moments. Using political cartoons published during the 1995 LegCo election campaign in Hong Kong and the 2000 presidential election campaign in Taiwan, our findings indicate that the cultural codes of liberty, though not typically considered part of traditional Chinese values, have become the dominant cultural source for discourse in civil society. Values of caring and state paternalism, which resemble subsets of Confucian values, exist as competing, alternate cultural codes. In Taiwan, politically-divided members of civil society appear to share the same cultural language, thereby fostering a basis for mutual engagement. Nevertheless, little mutual engagement is actually found among politically divergent discourses. In Hong Kong, even a shared cultural language cannot be documented. The conclusion discusses the broader implications of these findings for the inclusive potential of civic discourses, amidst competing identity claims, in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Pointing out some real problems of institutional studies of modern society, postinstitutionalism does not provide what economic theory needs. The rejection of functionalism, rationalism and efficiency and optimality criteria sidetracks this approach to the field of sociology and cultural studies; deeconomization is also effected on account of target substitution of institution transplanting. Another essential problem is the confusion of notions through their “unsealing” that enables an “alternate” interpretation of blockchain and allows to oppose against the transaction costs minimization principle, basing on the criticisms of the Coase Theorem. Rejecting this interpretation, the article claims that the studies of the institutional complexity of modern society does not require refusal of classical approaches, but their clarification. Given the increasing rise of the world's older population and the quick alteration of the socioeconomic landscape, many countries, Malaysia included, recognise the necessity to protect the economic security of the older people. This country's alarmingly ageing population will transform it into an aged nation by the year 2030. However, several issues and challenges experienced by them, such as the inadequacy of financial savings, living in poverty, and being censured by family issues, may prevent Malaysia from attaining its 2020 ambition of becoming a developed nation and aged friendly country. Thus, this study believed it was necessary to implement effective methods to tackle these issues and challenges along with maximising the health and wellness of the older population. One alternate approach proposed by this study is to increase the participation of healthy and capable older people in the labour force. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of labour force participation and engagement on older people, their family members, society, and the country in support of the alternate approach proposed. Following this aim, this study obtained the data from qualitative research for the doctoral degree of one of the authors. This study found that older people's employment favourably impacted themselves on (i) an individual level, (ii) their families and coworkers on an interpersonal level, and (iii) society on a societal level. This study also demonstrates that the employment of older people can positively impact the (iv) country. The majority of the positive impacts on older people's employment can contribute to their wellbeing, as outlined in the National Policy for Older Person (2011).

Considering our aging society and declining birthrate, we studied the motivations for intergenerational care for the elderly in China and analyze it through different generations of children and grandchildren. This paper mainly uses logistic regression analysis, descriptive statistics, heterogeneity analysis, robustness analysis, and other quantitative methods to analyze the data of the China Household Tracking Survey (CFPS) in 2018. According to the relevant research results, we believe that both children or grandchildren may be motivations. However, the proportion of factors is higher because the proportion of parents choosing alternate-generation care has increased based on the financial support provided by their children, and underdeveloped children are more likely to be favored by their parents to provide alternate-generation care. This paper is more inclined to consider children to be the main motivator for intergenerational care under the dual motives of “feedback” exchange and altruism through “helping the weak”. Next, the influence factors of a series of control variables are analyzed for the groups that take care of the next generation, and it is found that the intimacy between the elderly and their spouses, the number of meals with their families per week, and the use of electronic products will all affect the degree of care provided by their fathers. Based on this, this paper proposes that the three forces of government, society, and family are needed for joint support of the elderly when they are taking care of each other. We will make generational care less responsible, free and burdensome, and at the same time respect the right of the elderly to say “no” to providing care.

The state co-opts SPARC’s institutional framework to mediate resettlement, engender limited traversal from ‘population’ to ‘citizen’, restrict democratic liberation and subject the PAPs to bifold governance against the antagonistic articulations of state-subaltern relations, viz. ‘political society’ and ‘deep democracy’. SPARC’s institutional claims of inclusion and community-centric resettlement, non-confrontational negotiations and politics of patience are materialized through institutional coercion, domesticated confrontations and inadequate compensation, and are augmented by the PAPs’ calculative rationalities, fear of homelessness and anticipation of urban citizenship. Against this backdrop and amid further post-resettlement marginalities that complicate housing-based ‘substantive citizenship’ and ‘political society’-based mediation, this article calls for a re-politicization of the redevelopment discourse to seek alternate possibilities of urban citizenship for the urban subaltern.

A major symptom of postmodernity is the loss of utopian energy, of which the popularity of dystopian cultural production is evident. The dystopian genre, however, is cautionary, and thus utopian. Associated is the influence of technology on post-utopian culture—although it has been viewed pessimistically, technology allows for new ways of telling dystopian stories. One such mode of telling dystopian stories is the Alternate Reality Game (ARG), a narrative, multi-media game, using several different technologies that puts the player in a fictional reality. One ARG that exemplifies the idea of dystopia as having utopian energy is Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero, which shows that technology can have utopian energy, offering new ways of telling dystopian stories such as via the ARG, thus locating some utopian energy in postmodern culture through the form’s culturally critical structure and interactive nature, which equals a call to action against the dystopian nature of contemporary society.

Abstract. Virtual reality (VR) enables users to have an alternate reality experience. The virtual world surrounds users and can be perceived atmospherically. However, VR triggers human perception with far-reaching consequences. VR worlds are hardly questioned by the consumers. The effects of virtual experiences could have a lasting impact on learning or acting. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect on the use of VR in educational contexts. In our research and teaching project students produced VR field trips on topics of urban society–environment research. Based on the project findings we explain how we implement VR as a practice of sense-based and content-based acquirement of space and a (visual) practice of mediation. A key element is the critical reflection on the meaning of body and emotion. This can be a way to mindfulness – both in the context of teaching and in the context of the transformation of society–environment relations in general.

Abstract: As the Habsburgs expanded their territories throughout the eighteenth century, they gained control over a wide variety of ethno-religious groups. In an effort to secure the frontier, administrators favored some groups, like German-speaking colonists, while only "tolerating" others, like the Jews. The government had a dilemma when dealing with the Jews. On the one hand, they were seen as an alien population and possible threat to the economic well-being of the Habsburgs' other subjects. On the other hand, the authorities recognized the important economic place occupied by Jews on the frontier (and elsewhere). This led authorities to alternate between policies intended to exclude Jews from society and those intended to integrate them. As the eighteenth century progressed, policies focused on assimilation dominated, though official and unofficial perceptions of the Jews themselves remained largely negative. Thus, while Jews gained more rights and recognition of their important place on the frontier, they nevertheless remained tolerated rather than accepted into that society.
