Streszczenie:
This thesis is structured as three papers and aims to explore three main alliance factors that relate to firm performance, with a sample of China and Taiwan companies from the printed circuit board industry and plastic rubber industry. Firm performance depends on firm strategy and how resources are configured. A critical alliance factor is alliance strategy, which can determine how firms form and operate their alliances. Alliance strategy can be either a standalone strategy or a portfolio strategy. I attempt to determine (1) if managerial characteristics and compensation package relate to the choice of alliance strategy; (2) if alliance strategy impacts on alliance diversities and firm performance relationships; (3) if alliance capabilities impact on the alliance strategy and firm performance relationship. Paper 1 builds on upper echelon theory and agency theory. I theorise that managerial characteristics and compensation package are the key determinants to understand why executives adopt different alliance strategies. The results show that tenure, executives’ educational background, functional background and variable pay are important to predict the choice of an alliance strategy. Paper 2 builds on the resource-based view. I explore the alliance strategy as a moderating influence between alliance diversities (partner, functional and governance) and firm performance. The results show that alliance strategy impacts on partner diversity and firm performance. However, it does not impact on the functional diversity-firm performance and governance diversity-firm performance relationships. Governance diversity is related to firm performance only when partner diversity is also considered. Paper 3 builds on the resource-based view. I suggest that alliance capabilities are a mediating influence between alliance strategy and firm performance. The results demonstrate that individual alliance capabilities complement standalone alliance strategy, and portfolio alliance capabilities and individual alliance capabilities both complement portfolio alliance strategy. Theoretical contributions, possible future research and managerial implications are discussed in relation to current theories of alliance strategy, alliance diversity and alliance capabilities.

Streszczenie:
The objective of this research was to broadly study the topic of non-equity strategic alliances in the high technology sector. The a priori assumptions were that non-equity alliances were different, and that treatment of non-equity alliances in high technology firms was different from other industries. The objectives of the study were to understand: (a) why are non-equity alliances chosen in the high technology sector; (b) what roles do strategy and core competencies play in the choice of non-equity alliances; and (c) what role do technology and market factors play in high technology alliances? This study investigated twelve alliance formation decisions among three firms in the Ottawa-Carleton Region, in Ontario, Canada. The firms in the sample ranged in size from $150 million in annual revenues, to more than \$10 billion. The partner organizations reflected an international scope with headquarters in Japan, Europe and North America. The sample covered non-equity strategic alliances formed from 1990 to 1996.

The main purpose with our survey was to analyze if strategic alliances within the international airline business have led to increased profitability and strengthened the competitive advantage for the members of the alliance.

For our study we focused on Star Alliance and analyzed the development of the selected profitability indicators for the five members that founded it. We also analyzed the same indicators for four airlines that for the time period of the investigation were not members of a strategic alliance. These four airlines were used for purpose of comparison.

Our selection was made on the basis that there were these five airlines that founded the alliance and that Star Alliance was the first of its kind. The selection of the four airlines of comparison was made on the basis that these four airlines, for the studied time period, were not members of a strategic alliance.

We made the study by collecting information from the airlines annual reports for the years 1994 to 2004 and tried to discover any kind of differences for the time before and after the alliance was founded. To increase the credibility of the study we made a statistic hypothesis test to detect if there were any significant differences, regarding the profitability indicators and the competitive advantages, between the airlines within Star Alliance and the airlines of comparison.

The result of our study was that no legible improvement could be proven for the airlines that founded Star Alliance. We could detect that the comparison airlines we used for the survey had a similar development regarding the chosen profitability indicators and the competitive advantages. When no differences could be proven between these airlines, we drew the conclusion that the members in Star Alliance had not improved the studied indicators, to any greater extent than the airlines that were not members of a strategic alliance.

Streszczenie:
Any reasonably large group of individuals, families, states, and parties exhibits the phenomenon of subgroup formations within the group such that the members of each group have a strong connection or bonding between each other. The reasons of the formation of these subgroups that we call alliances differ in different situations, such as, kinship and friendship (in the case of individuals), common economic interests (for both individuals and states), common political interests, and geographical proximity. This structure of alliances is not only prevalent in social networks, but it is also an important characteristic of similarity networks of natural and unnatural objects. (A similarity network defines the links between two objects based on their similarities). Discovery of such structure in a data set is called clustering or unsupervised learning and the ability to do it automatically is desirable for many applications in the areas of pattern recognition, computer vision, artificial intelligence, behavioral and social sciences, life sciences, earth sciences, medicine, and information theory. In this dissertation, we study a graph theoretical model of alliances where an alliance of the vertices of a graph is a set of vertices in the graph, such that every vertex in the set is adjacent to equal or more vertices inside the set than the vertices outside it. We study the problem of partitioning a graph into alliances and identify classes of graphs that have such a partition. We present results on the relationship between the existence of such a partition and other well known graph parameters, such as connectivity, subgraph structure, and degrees of vertices. We also present results on the computational complexity of finding such a partition. An alliance cover set is a set of vertices in a graph that contains at least one vertex from every alliance of the graph. The complement of an alliance cover set is an alliance free set, that is, a set that does not contain any alliance as a subset. We study the properties of these sets and present tight bounds on their cardinalities. In addition, we also characterize the graphs that can be partitioned into alliance free and alliance cover sets. Finally, we present an approximate algorithm to discover alliances in a given graph. At each step, the algorithm finds a partition of the vertices into two alliances such that the alliances are strongest among all such partitions. The strength of an alliance is defined as a real number p, such that every vertex in the alliance has at least p times more neighbors in the set than its total number of neighbors in the graph). We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on standard data sets.

The aim of the study was to investigate psychotherapists perceptions about and experiences of identifying ruptures in the therapeutic alliance in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The data collection consisted of narrative interviews. The qualitative method, a phenomenological hermeneutical method for researching lived experience (Lindseth & Norberg, 2004), was used in the analysis and interpretation of the texts. The result showed that the therapeutic skills awareness and metacommunication was used to identify, prevent and resolve ruptures in the alliance. The conclusion is that psychotherapists stories carries a hidden meaning of any therapeutic interventions in CBT at the same time constitutes relational actions, and a language for the same is desirable. Meaningfulness and professional pride can also be adopted, by shifting attention from failures, into courage to take responsibility for the therapeutic process and the relationship.

Streszczenie:

Background

Strategic alliances have become increasingly popular within the business world, they can be seen as a way to improve the total output of the firm. Over the last 10 years, the industry endured trying times, the most notable being the events of September 11, 2001. That event drastically changed airline traveling all across the world. It also showed the importance of collaborations in order to stay competitive. Star Alliance began in 1997 and has since then grown into

the world’s largest airline alliance with a total market share of 25.1%.

Purpose

The raison d’être of this study is to quantify and analyze the augmentation of load factors over time, in terms of distribution, as they pertain to capacity performance of allied carriers within Star Alliance.

Method

In order to fulfill the purpose, a deductive approach to the research has been taken. Furthermore, due to the nature of the data, a quantitative approach has been used within. Two hypotheses will be stated and several research questions as well.

Result

It can be clearly seen that distribution of load factors has transformed during the years. There is a shift in both the skewness and the kurtosis of the distributions that can be seen when examining the frequency distribution charts. The kurtosis increases and the skew decreases, measures that are positive for the airlines, while the anomalies of 0% and 100% load factor have remained stable throughout the years. A general increase in the average load factors has also been seen.

Conclusion

By analyzing the empirical findings, it is clear that the load factor of the allied members has increased and that the proportion of the denied boardings decreased in relation to the average load factor. This means that the alternative hypothesis was accepted in the first hypothesis and that the second alternative hypothesis was accepted in the second hypothesis. The research also reveals a generally increased mean which together with the changes in the skew and kurtosis lead to an acceptance of the beta distribution. Furthermore, higher load factors were shown to have a strong correlation with the increase in efficiency and decrease in overselling.

Alliances for security and communism as leverage are two policies which are major tool of Franco-Pakistan foreign policies during the cold war to achieve their national objectives. United States was the principal actor around which the whole set of policy formation based. French and Pakistani real or perceived security threats led them to adopt reactive foreign policies – either against America or against India. This threat perception when crossed a certain extent – turned into nuclear nationalism in both countries – although in different decades. Being a great power of the past, French adaptation of those policies which can be expected from an under developed state like Pakistan- conclude two things: the declining position of France in international decisions making hierarchy and the struggle of survival diminished the political status of states while formulating the policies. The bond which strengthens the relationship between the states is not only the mutuality of interest but also the adoption of same policies under certain constraints. The warmness which develop between France and Pakistan during 1960s and later – has proved that there is great possibility exist which help both states to move forward. If they can formulate same policies without consultation, they would expand this commonalty of approach in other areas of interest

For a graph G=(V,E), a nonempty subset S contained in V is called a defensive alliance if for each v in S, there are at least as many vertices from the closed neighborhood of v in S as in V-S. If there are strictly more vertices from the closed neighborhood of v in S as in V-S, then S is a strong defensive alliance. A (strong) defensive alliance is called global if it is also a dominating set of G. The alliance partition number (respectively, strong alliance partition number) is the maximum cardinality of a partition of V into defensive alliances (respectively, strong defensive alliances). The global (strong) alliance partition number is defined similarly. For each parameter we give both general bounds and exact values. Our major results include exact values for the alliance partition number of grid graphs and for the global alliance partition number of caterpillars.

Strategic alliances in recent decades experienced a strong growth both in terms of firms management practices and in terms of academic research. This growth has been accompanied by many controversy concerning their outcomes (performance) and the factors influencing these outcomes. Through this research, our objective is to understand the phenomenon of asymmetric strategic alliances by identifying its main characteristics and factors that may positively or negatively influence its performance. In this perspective, our research first phase consisted of the realization of a state of the art on the concepts of strategic alliances in general, asymmetric alliances in particular and performance. On this basis, we established eight research hypotheses that we tested by adopting a qualitative approach by studying 10 cases of asymmetric alliances. Our empirical application concerned strategic alliances between French SMEs and multinational companies operating in the aviation industry and was conducted from the perspective of SMEs involved. Analysis of our research hypotheses allowed us to obtain three main results: the existence of strong links between partners specificities and their alliances motivation; the existence of significant negative links between between partners asymmetries in terms of (size, organizational culture and experiences) and relational performance; and the existence of significant positive relationship between SMEs and multinationals involved resources complementarity and their quantitative results (financial performance and organizational learning). Our results confirm some previous research concerning of asymmetric alliances characteristics and performance. They can also be objects of practical recommendations to managers of SMEs involved in these relationships

As the global competitive environment becomes increasingly complex and volatile, organisations look to networks to complement skills, resources, agility and capabilities. This research program aims to achieve a better understanding in the role of alliance portfolios in the development of dynamic capabilities of innovation and commercialisation. Through a case study approach examining the network of The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences, this research program uses a grounded-theory methodology to construct a conceptual framework, which is generalised to other healthcare firms’, alliance portfolios and potentially to other industries. The central assertion of this research program is that within complex and high-velocity environments, the character of a firms’ alliance portfolio facilitates the extent to which dynamic capabilities are created that result in new market opportunities, ultimately leading to competitive advantage. The results suggest that alliance portfolios develop dynamic capabilities (specifically, innovation and commercialisation) when comprised of individual alliance relationships that establish variables of trust; strategic fit of resources and vision; secure partners that operate within the same industrial sphere and/or core business as the hub-firm; and a personal commitment to the alliance. Further, those individual alliance relationships that experience variables including lofty expectations; fuzzy decision making processes; lack/loss of strategic focus; differences in corporate cultures; and poor transference/application of dynamic capabilities across different industries were unsuccessful in the development of dynamic capabilities. Initial results also suggest that the cumulative experience of the dedicated alliance function (Kale, Dyer, and Singh; 2002), and the resulting dynamic capabilities established therein, have the ability to transition (Arndt, 2008) to the alliance portfolio (Wassmer, 2010). The alliance portfolio not only acts as an egocentric catchment of an organisation’s respective alliances (Baum, 2000), but can also acts as a cumulative set of dynamic capabilities, resources, and opportunities.

Despite that alliance formation commonly happen when states share mutual interests and like-mindedness, it is possible to find alliances, where the states promote radically different political, normative, and cultural characteristics. Such an alliance is observed in the case of Saudi Arabia and the United States, which subsequently have endured. The following research will thus elaborate on how the Saudi-American alliance have endured throughout, despite their radical differences. To examine the endurance of the Saudi-American alliance, this research has conducted a case study and used Walter Carlsnaes Foreign Policy model. The research has concludingly found that the alliance has endured due to a variety of factors such as economic trade, regional instability, and security, that consistently has persisted throughout. Despite the American role as a hegemon and the changing administrations throughout the endurance, it has been argued that the longevity of the relation has contributed to the consistency of the factors mentioned above. This is evident in the unpredictability in terms of the region, instability, and insecurity that opposes threats to the U.S., and economic trade relations which have discouraged the U.S. from leaving the alliance.

Streszczenie:
While the nature of security is transforming, alliances remain at the centre of foreign policymaking in the contemporary era. Although such ideas as 'the end of alliances' and 'the end of alliance theories' have been discussed with the emergence of a 'coalition of willingness', alliances have continuously evolved in the post-Cold War and post-9.11 contexts. The forms of security are transforming by comprehending not only the traditional but also non-traditional types, consisting of peacekeeping operations (PKO), humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HA/DR), global commons and energy security. In the face of changing and malleable international security surroundings, alliances have been reshaped. Yet, alliances remain to be treated as mere military alliances rather than political ones in the realm of IR scholarship and a negative perception of the interdependence of allies still exists, which may have limited the understanding about alliance relationships in the post-Cold War period. This PhD thesis aims to refine the theory of alliance by incorporating the neo- Gramscian account of hegemony, which is crucial to be taken into consideration. This research project is intended to go beyond the military understanding of alliances. In light of alliance politics, it is important to explore not only material but also the economic and ideational aspects of alliances. In consideration of the current circumstances, it seems that it is not only material elements that have bolstered the alliance, which underlines the importance of examining other elements such as ideology. Although some literature addresses the causes of the continuity of alliances, there have not been in-depth investigations about the durability of the U.S.-Japan alliance, particularly within the International Relations (IR) framework. Furthermore, the alliance may have become deeply embedded in Japanese society as the pillar of Japanese foreign policy, which is another aspect that shall be examined.

The aim of this project was to define the Technology Transfer Alliance (TTA), a nonprofit organization for Higher Education Institutions supporting capacity building in ICT and renewable energy through a project-driven learning. TTA is today still only an idea, waiting to be launched, which is why the goals for this bachelor thesis are to establish partnerships with institutions that will support the reaching of the goals of TTA, as well as providing a more solid definition of the functions of TTA, as to make the alliance more attracting for future partners. Functions include for example the project-driven framework that will serve as template for the educational process within TTA. To reach the goals with this project, several interviews were conducted with potential partners of TTA in African countries and other individuals that hold an expertise within the scope of this project. The interviews were meant to establish the expectations of TTA in terms of what a partnership would entail as well as to prelude discussions for which the potential partner would ultimately agree to sign a formal partnership agreement. The interviews also served as research about the open source solutions, which originally were developed by Master students at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), and that will be focused on in futureTTA-projects. Ultimately were the goals of this project succeeded, in terms of defining the aim and functions of TTA. During the time frame of this project, vision and scope of TTA were set. This resulted in a restructuring of existing websites and in a production of an official partnership agreement, which entailsthe objectives of a partnership. The project resulted also resulted in that several African institutions expressed a great deal of interest of joining TTA as partners. Getting them to sign the partnership agreement will however be a task for future project teams to fulfill.

The first part of this work lies on the confluence of therapy and pedagogy, studying two clinic cases of Down's syndrome children. These two cases, developed from the double point of view of pedagogy and psychotherapy, introduce a theoretical reflexion about the genesis of thinking, the drives and their objects, and the role of "symbolic reparation" as described by Melanie KLEIN. The interactive processes of transference and alliance are examined from both therapeutic and educational point of view. The very concept of affiance is proposed as a modality for the connections between pedagogy and psycho-analysis, and historically studied through Sigmund FREUD’s works, and texts published in the "Zeitschrift für psychoanalytische Pädagogik" between 1927 and 1938. Hitherto unpublished texts by Hans ZULLIGER and Steff BORNSTEIN are also proposed as operating models for both psychoanalysts and pedagogues. The conclusion chapter, still leaning on clinic experience and practice of teachers and social workers training, proposes a research, through the concept of the alliance, to fertilize the field of pedagogy with psycho-analysis

Streszczenie:
The end of the Cold War in 1990 was followed by a shift from a bipolar to a unipolar world, profoundly transforming the nature of international alliance politics. Then, what are the systemic features of the unipolar system that have changed alliance relations in comparison to the previous bipolar and multipolar world? How can we explain the diverse reaction of the U.S. allies in different regions in response to the U.S. request for the modification of alliance functions and reshaping of the alliance burden sharing? How do we measure and interpret changes in the nature of alliance politics in a unipolar system? The goal of this project is to provide a systematic answer to these questions. Focusing on international system polarities and alliance burden sharing behavior, this dissertation builds a framework for understanding the dynamics of alliance politics. In particular, I argue that alliance burden sharing as an empirical indicator plays a critical role in explaining the changed nature of the unipolar alliance system. First, I examine how the two interrelated systemic factors - external threat and the distribution of power - influence alliance burden sharing with a system-level analysis by utilizing a quantitative method with state-year burden sharing data from 1885 to 2000. Second, I present case studies of South Korea and Japan's alliance burden sharing in the post-Cold War period. A central argument of the dissertation is that the role and function of alliance is determined by structural constraints of different international system polarities. Specifically, this project demonstrates that burden sharing is a key factor representing the impact of systemic properties of unipolarity on the behavioral changes in alliance politics.

Streszczenie:
Prior research has shown the therapeutic alliance to be positively related to therapeutic outcome in couple therapy (Johnson & Talitman, 2007; Knoblock-Fedders, Pinsoff, & Mann, 2007). It is common for the therapeutic alliance to vary over the course of therapy. Alliance ruptures can be defined as â deteriorations in the relationship between therapist and patientâ (Safran & Muran, 1996, p. 447). If managed successfully, these moments of alliance rupture can positively impact therapy (Safran & Muran, 1996; Sprenkle, Davis, & Lebow, 2009). As a result, researchers have begun to develop models of alliance rupture repair to help further our understanding of how this process is achieved in various therapeutic approaches (Aspland, Llewelyn, Hardy, Barkham, & Stiles, 2008; Binder, Holgerse, & Nielsen, 2008; Safran & Muran, 1996). The purpose of this study was to conduct a preliminary, discovery-oriented task analysis (Greenberg, 2007) in order to develop a model of alliance rupture repair in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a couple therapy approach which encourages emotional reconnection and restructuring of couple interactions developed by Susan Johnson and Les Greenberg (Johnson, 2004). By conducting a thought experiment with four experienced certified EFT therapists, a rational model of alliance rupture repair in EFT was formulated. The rational model was then compared with the analysis of alliance rupture repair sequences during the process of one coupleâ s therapy with a certified EFT therapist to develop a rational-empirical model of alliance rupture repair in EFT. The final model and treatment implications are discussed.

Thesis (Sc.D.)--Boston University
The therapeutic alliance is widely recognized as an effective component of therapeutic change. However, the topic has received very little attention within the context ofpsychiatric rehabilitation programs. The limited evidence available suggests that the alliance may be related to client outcomes within psychiatric rehabilitation programs, but there is no evidence as to which factors are related to the alliance within this setting. This dissertation consists oftwo studies intended to contribute to the limited knowledgebaseconcerningthiskeyconstructwithinpsychiatricrehabilitation. Both studies used previously collected and de-identified data made available for analyses by a supported employment program, a type ofpsychiatric rehabilitation program. Data were made available for 70 individuals served by the single employment specialist in the program. All data were captured upon intake by program administrative processes in place at that time, or were extracted from program administrative databases (for outcomes). Study 1 examined whether client characteristics found to be associated with the alliance across several populations or program types were associated with the initial alliance upon intake to the program. Study 2 examined the relationship between the initial alliance and program and employment outcomes six months after intake into the program. The initial alliance was ofinterest due to a recognized link between the early alliance and program retention for individuals with schizophrenia, one ofthe primary target populations for psychiatric rehabilitation programs. Study 1 found being older at intake and having a smaller social network size were significantly correlated with client self-report o f a high alliance at the bivariate level. A forward stepwise logistic regression analysis indicated that neither variable remained an independent predictor ofhaving a high alliance when controlling for the effects ofthe other. Study 2 found no significant relationships between a high initial alliance and program retention, amount ofservices received, or obtaining employment six months after intake through bivariate and linear or logistic forward stepwise regression analyses. These findings may have resulted from unexpectedly high alliance ratings, which limited the variability observed. The high ratings may have been due to social demand characteristics associated with how the measure was administered, the limited length of the relationship on which to base the ratings, or other factors. Future research should address these potentially important issues, and make use of alliance ratings at multiple time points, with multiple employment specialists in programs using evidence based supported employment models in order to maximize the utility of any findings to the field ofpsychiatric rehabilitation.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates the effect of alliance experience onto stock-market value creation. Building on existing research, this thesis centres on the distinction between general alliance experience (i.e. the overall experience of managing alliances) and relational experience (i.e. the experience of managing alliances with the same partner). As existing research has identified significant heterogeneity in value creation from these types of alliance experience, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate conditions under which alliance experience is more valued by investors. This thesis therefore disentangles alliance experience into three further dimensions, namely the quality of previous relational experiences, the interrelationship among the two experience types and a temporal dimension of how the two experience types are accumulated in different rhythms over time. Firstly, by using signalling theory, I hypothesize that the quality of the previous partnerships emphasized at announcement positively influences value creation and this effect is moderated by signaller, receiver, and intermediary characteristics. Secondly, in order to investigate the interrelated effect of both types of experience, resource-based, learning and trust-based arguments are used to build an interrelated alliance experience theory. I argue that high levels of general alliance experience create overconfidence in alliance management processes and this negatively affects the value creation of relational experiences. This effect is hypothesized to vary based on firm characteristics. Thirdly, building on organizational learning, resource-based and trust-based perspectives, I propose that both general alliance and relational experiences are negatively affected by irregularity in the rhythm in which they are accumulated. This thesis investigates the effect of these quality, interrelationship and temporal dimensions onto value creation through multiple event studies in the global biopharmaceutical industry in a sample of R&D alliances between 2003 and 2012. Results indicate general support for the arguments and provide evidence that experience-related contingencies affect firms’ ability to create value from alliance experiences.

The main purpose of this research is to penetrating the influence of strategic alliance type and alliance behavior resulting in alliance performance. In the past studies, there were only focused on researching critical factors that experienced successful alliances among ISP, ICP, and ASP industries in Taiwan, but no research or actual scenario were confirmed that ever ally themselves among ISP industries. Hence, this research is based on the structures of stock shares and the perspectives of alliances to differentiate strategic alliance types as well as analyze on choosing alliance management and allying partners from different point of views. The analysis induces critical factors of a successful ISP alliance in Taiwan. The research utilizes the method of case-study as studying objects of those ISP alliances are in progress and are completed. Throughout the in-depth interviews, we are able to develop related questions based on their background and case information. The results of the research are described in the followings: 1.ISPs in Taiwan have common characteristics of more exclusive control in holding more market sharing. The more capitals of ISPs have the more bargaining power can expand their market sharing. small-size ISPs are condensed their scales to pygmies. Thus, fixed-line firms, ISPs, and Internet related firms are compromised by negotiating alliances so they can keep competitive and growing in the market. 2.Both terms of “Exchange stack sharing” and “perspectives of alliance” influence alliance performance to which firms among ISPs in Taiwan conduct allying and choose alliance type. In spite of utilizing type “Horizontal” or “Vertical”, majority choose “Exchange stack sharing” for strategic alliance have better operating performance. Overall, for those don’t choose “Exchange stack sharing” as strategic alliance plan, utilizing type “Horizontal” have better operating performance than the other. 3.The firms are conducting to be allied among ISPs in Taiwan, most of them are deeply aware of “Alliance Behavior” before they are toward the alliance. Most of interviewers’ state “The successful alliances are considered they are all well-planed beforehand and well management and monitoring while the projects are in progress.” Even some of interviewers’ feedback “They subsume assessments and reviews as part of planning projects, so they learn things from the alliance afterward thus enhance to reach their ultimate goal.” 4.In the relationship of each structure, type of alliance directly effect alliance performance; behavior of strategic alliance obviously effect alliance performance too. Furthermore, 4 types of strategic alliances partially effect behavior of alliance management. The factors of choosing allying partners also effect alliance performance.

Under competitive environment, firms need to form alliance because the limitation of internal resources. However, prior studies in alliance focused on partner choice and strategic complementary; neglected the role and the importance of alliance managers. This study suggests that manager''s background, alliance experience, coordination skill, conflict resolution capability, and knowledge integration capability, will contribute to alliance performance. Based on a survey of 45 firms in Taiwan, we find that manager’s alliance experience, coordination skill, conflict resolution capability, and knowledge integration capability have a positive relationship with alliance performance. These findings also suggest that firms may consider selecting a manager who is capable of experience and capability to achieve greater alliance performance.
