Montie, Mary L. "Where are all the gifted Black girls? Giving high school girls voice via qualitative research approach and Black feminist theory". Thesis, Wayne State University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3558200.
Pełny tekst źródłaGifted programs in the United States under-represent African American (Black) children (Phi Delta Kappan, 1992). In 1993, African-American students were under-represented by 50% in gifted education, and 60% in 1998 (Grantham & Ford, 2003). Further, some speculate that gifted education programs are the most segregated educational programs in the nation (Ford, 1995). This proves especially true for Black gifted girl in urban educational arenas, where gifted Black girls are rarely recognized. The purpose of this research was to examine the circumstances surrounding how urban black girls—identified as showing academic promise—come either to be overlooked as qualified for gifted education or seem not to take up a sense of themselves as gifted, that is they see themselves as not fitting among those who are in gifted education. Three scholarly arenas frame this study: Feminist thought and theory, with an emphasis on Black feminist thought, notions of "giftedness" and gifted education, and policies and processes for identification of gifted Black girls. Eight gifted Black girls were individually interviewed twice, three teachers were individually interviewed, and three parents were interviewed in a focus group session. Four interview guides were constructed to focus on students' perspectives of GS1 (pseudonym) and gifted education, parent strategies, and teachers' roles in the identification of these gifted Black girls. Qualitative analysis strategies (Spradley1980) were utilized for data analysis. The curriculum of the gifted programming at GS1 (pseudonym) ultimately contributed greatly not only to how girls saw themselves as gifted, but also how they understood stereotypes about young Black women. The feminist curriculum and the "feminist lens" provided in the gifted programming at GS1 provided outlets for girls' voices. Teachers interviewed not only understood the gifted Black girls' culture, but also strengthened their relationships with the girls and with their parents by presenting and enforcing clear expectations for the gifted programming. Parents interviewed not only understood their gifted daughters' uniqueness, but also the importance of their independence and security as young Black women.

Pełny tekst źródłaDoctor of Education
The purpose of this study was to shed light on the experiences of Black students during desegregation in Franklin County, Virginia. The researcher aimed to capture the oral histories of students who attended Lee M. Waid, an all-Black rural Virginian school, between 1963 and 1970. The voices of the participants and their stories add to the breadth of literature and body of knowledge on the desegregation process. Before the completion of this study, the perspectives and experiences of participants had not been formally documented. A brief review of the literature on the history of Black education at the national, state, and local levels provides essential background information for historical context leading to the desegregation of United States public schools. An overview of southern segregated schools provides insight into the supports and values held within all-Black schools before and after the initiation of the desegregation of schools. The examination of student experiences during desegregation provides critical insight on America's pathway toward equity in education, the effect of desegregation from the student perspective, and the remnants of segregation that still exist today in American public schools. Through a qualitative case study, the researcher conducted interviews with former students and stakeholders of Lee M. Waid. The researcher reviewed primary documents such as yearbooks, newspaper articles, and other documents provided by participants. Through interviews with participants, (a) high expectations from teachers and administrators, (b) parent and community support, (c) familial attitudes or beliefs about segregation and integration, (d) school pride, and (e) each participant meaningfully reflected on their individual school experiences during desegregation. The themes identified in the study are similar to those identified by other researchers who have explored the initial desegregation of schools and the supports and values held within segregated schools. One of the recommendations of this study encourages additional research and documentation of student experiences during desegregation. The exploration of student experiences during desegregation is vital to preserving the history, legacy, and influence of Black education.

Pełny tekst źródłaIn 1954, Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) became the first undergraduate school in the Deep South to desegregate. Its acclaim as the first, however, was promoted only because it lost as a defendant in Clara Dell Constantine et al. v. Southwestern Louisiana Institute et al. What occurred then, and the indignities experienced by African American students during that first decade has never been fully documented. The black experience was figuratively and literally blacked out.
African American students found themselves receiving lower grades in class than their white counterparts. Social events banned them, and school services denied access. To cope with racism, they drew strength by supporting one another, developing a grapevine, establishing their own social network, and most of all, keeping focused on their education. But not everyone was against them. Some whites risked their reputation, and became their brother’s keeper.
The four Pillars of Progress, commemorating the fiftieth anniversaries of SLI’s desegregation and Brown in 2004, stand today as a campus testament to that era. But what remains at odds is whether the desegregation of SLI was “without incident.” That still remains a matter of interpretation and depends on whom is being asked and who answers.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this work is to differentiate the autonomous `self-compassion' of therapeutic modernist Buddhism from pre-therapeutic Mahâyâna Buddhist practices of refuge, so that refuge itself is not obscured as a fundamental Buddhist orientation that empowers the possibility of compassion for self and other in the first place. The work begins by situating issues of shame and self-aversion sociologically, in order to understand how and why self-aversion became a significant topic of concern during the final quarter of the twentieth century. This discussion allows for a further investigation of shame as it has been addressed first by psychologists, for whom shame is often understood as a form of isolating self-aversion, and then by philosophers such as Bernard Williams and Emmanuel Levinas, for whom shame attunes the person to the moral expectations of a community, and therefore to ethical commands that arise from beyond the individual self. Both psychologists and philosophers are ultimately concerned with problems and possibilities of relationship. These discussions prepare the reader to understand the importance of Buddhist refuge as a form of relationship that structures an integrative rather than destructive self-evaluation. The second chapter of the dissertation closely examines Friedrich Nietzsche's work on shame. In a late note, Nietzsche wrote that "man has lost the faith in his own value when no infinitely valuable whole works through him"; the second chapter argues that Nietzsche's vision of a relatively autonomous will to power cannot fully incorporate this important Nietzschean insight, and helps to drive the kind of self-evaluation typical of modernist `personality culture,' which is likely to become harsh. The third chapter first discusses contemporary therapeutic Buddhist responses to self-aversion, particularly practices of `self-compassion' that claim to be rooted in early Pali canonical and commentarial sources, before developing a commentary on the medieval Tibetan lojong teaching Drive all blames into one. Drive all blames into one, though often discussed in contemporary commentaries as a form of self-blame, should be understood more thoroughly as a simultaneous process of refuge and critique--a process that drives further access to compassion not only for self, but for others as well. Chapter Four discusses mourning and self-reproach in the apophthegmata of the Desert Fathers, showing how `self-hatred' in this context is in a form of irony: the self that is denigrated is not an ultimate reality, and the process of mourning depends upon both an access to love and a clear recognition of our many turns away from that love. In conclusion, I draw attention to the irony of modernist rejections of religious self-critique as supposedly harmful forms of mere shaming, even as the modernist emphasis on autonomy is what enables self-critique to become harsh and damaging

These findings seriously question the idea that sport promotes egalitarianism. The data reveals that the legacy of apartheid still means that access to sports such as 6-down touch rugby are available only to areas with particular facilities and to those that can afford it. It is not available for all. Sport itself is not magic-wand through which people naturally find it possible to put behind them societal differences. Differences from greater society are mirrored in sport and this was evident from my data.
