This paper analyses the agro-food exports variety from twelve Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) to the European Union (EU) during the years 1995–2007. The panel regression models explain the agro-food exports by its previous year, income in the importing EU countries, and measure of agro-food export product variety, while the real exchange rate appreciation of the CEEC currencies has negatively influenced agro-food exports. The EU enlargement with the reduction in agricultural protection and the borderless single market has induced agro-food export increases in primary agricultural produce and intermediate food-processed products, but less in higher value-added food-processed differentiated products. The impact of increased number of CEECs agro-food product varieties on agro-food export to the EU is positive.

The article substantiates the importance of the development of food markets in the solution of food security problem. It is argued that the tendency of demand for food has an increasing trend and the development of food markets still remains one of the most important challenges of contemporary world. The study analyzes the markets of Georgian agro- food products and studies the modern challenges in these markets. Comparative analysis of Georgian and Spanish food markets is conducted. The article estimates the positive and negative trends of export of Georgian agro-food products as well as the possibilities of diversification of products in the food markets. According to “The Impact-Immediacy” matrix the hindering factors of Georgian agro products export are identified. Using the «Priority Scheme» the priorities of economic policy stimulating the export of agro-food products are revealed. In terms of geographical orientation of the export the possibilities of diversification of food markets are discussed, especially in European markets. The conclusion is made that, in general, European food market is characterized by the growing tendency. However, in these markets there is no similar tendency for Georgian agro-food products. According to the study of the share of Georgian products and export growth rates in different countries the positive correlation between these variables is determined. But this circumstance is not considered to be sufficient for the positive impact on the economic growth. The conclusion is made that using effective mechanisms of export stimulation allows the diversification of export of Georgian agro products on the traditional but growing food markets on the one hand and on the other hand the expansion of geographical area of export markets.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an adapted gravity trade model to measure the influence of communication infrastructure development on agro-food trade. The adapted gravity trade model presents associations of bilateral agro-food trade between OECD countries with traditional gravity equation variables and particularly with variables of the information and communication infrastructure development. Using the adapted gravity trade model we find a positive association between the information and communication infrastructure development and bilateral agro-food trade flows between OECD countries. This association is significantly stronger for agricultural than for food products. The improved information and communication infrastructure development improves information and reduces trade transaction costs.

The focus of this research is to analyze the future and backward linkages of agro-industry products that support the West Sumatra tourism creative industry and vertical integration between typical snack food products of West Sumatra culinary that have added value. This study uses a regional economic approach with the Grubel-Llyod index method and analysis of input output from snack industry sector. Result of the study shows that the market potential of West Sumatra agro-industry products still has low added value due to the low value of intermediate inputs compared to the final demand. Increasing the added value of agro-industry products based on food crop products is carried out by external regions such as North Sumatra and Riau. Integration between vertical market and regional external markets occurs in fruit-based agro industry products such as mangosteen, jackfruit, and bananas, which are shown by the highest Grubel-Llyord Index value with the demand value is lower than the final demand. The development of agro-industry food products and agro-business activities supporting culinary tourism in West Sumatra can be conducted by increasing the added value of superior products through agro-processing at household producer level and creating agglomeration to enhance local demand.

Abstract The world-wide process of structural transformation is a result of the emergence of new challenges with long-term effect; which requires a strategic vision in the agro-food trade, together with the implementation of concrete actions by the authorities. Increasing global population, increasing pressure on natural resources and global warming are leading to a new framework at international level. In Europe, the aging process is an additional challenge. All these aspects will have profound implications for agriculture and rural areas. Global food demand is increasing, a large scale of urbanization, rising input prices, pressure on water resources and increasing vulnerability of crops and animals to climate change will limit food production. Even in these conditions agricultural sector of Romania has a huge potential. Domestic food demand could be covered if this potential will be exploited with technological resources and would not depend so much by climatic factors. Also Romania could export significant quantities of agro-food products. On the other hand, Romania suffers from one of the most pronounced structural divisions of agricultural land between all EU member states and also between the new member states. Precisely for this reason, Romania loses a lot in terms of production and export of agro-food products, in competition with developed countries. This paper analyzes the competitive position of Romanian companies in agro-food value chains. The article also answers to one of the most important questions. Are Romanian companies competitive in the agro-food value chains? What are the factors, challenges and obstacles for internationalization of Romanian agro-food product? In order to answer these questions, a quantitative research was performed using statistical data obtained from International Trade Center, for the year 2019 and Romanian National Committee for Macro prudential Supervision, 2020.

Introduction. The intensification of globalization processes that characterize the beginning of the new millennium has led to the emergence of supranational structures of regional and global scope. The deepening of Ukraine's integration into the international trading space causes new opportunities and threats. The relatively large size of the territory of Ukraine as a European state and its administrative structure causes a number of differences in the socio-economic development of its regions. Identifying regional differences in foreign trade in agri-food products and their causes is an urgent task of the study, given the leading role of the agro-industrial sector in Ukraine's foreign trade. The aim of the study is to identify regional differences of foreign trade in agri-food products and identify their causes. Results of work. The analysis results of foreign trade in agro-food products on the average for 2016-2018 by regions are given. It is determined that the four leading export regions are Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kyiv and Vinnytsia, as they account for about 47,9 %. The regions were evaluated according to the following indicators: the volume of regional exports, the volume of production of cereals and legumes, the production of sunflower seeds. According to the results of the analysis, each region was assigned a corresponding rank, on the basis of the values of which the correlation coefficients of the regions ranks were calculated. It is determined that there is a close link between the region's place in the national agri-food export ratings and the production of cereals and legumes; and there is a median link between the region's place in the national agri-food export and sunflower seed ratings. Imports of agro-food products by regions are considered, where Kiev region is the absolute leader, which together with Odessa, Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk regions have 64.5 % of all corresponding imports. The analysis of agro-food products import by groups of goods is presented. The regions ranking by import volumes of agri-food products and disposable income per person has been done. The obtained coefficient of correlation of ranks testifies to the average degree of relation close to high. Conclusions. It is proved that the differences in the volumes of crop production mainly cereals, legumes and sunflower are the basis for regional differentiation of agricultural food exports, which testifies to the raw nature of exports, stagnation of livestock and unsatisfactory development of the domestic food industry. Differentiation of imports of agro-industrial products is caused by the difference in income of the population by regions. Keywords: agro-food products, export, import, balance, production, raw materials, processing, disposable income.

Traceability system enables agro-food small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to record the information on attributes of their products along the food supply chain effectively. The halal status of the food products can be retained across companies’ supply chain by practising halal traceability system. This system is considered as one of the advanced technologies to overcome the violation of halal food products in the market despite low usage of advanced technologies detected among Malaysian SMEs. The main objective of the study was to investigate the agro-food SMEs’ intention to adopt halal traceability system. This study involved 130 agro-food SMEs that were selected using a systematic random sampling method. A structured questionnaire was used to collect the data from the SMEs. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, mean ranking analysis, Chisquare analysis, and independent-samples t-test. The results revealed that majority of agro -food SMEs involved in this study (111 companies, 85.4%) were categorized as small business size companies and most of the agro-food SMEs (73 companies, 56.2%) was in operation for less and equal to 9 years in the agro-food industry. Based on the mean ranking analysis, the agro-food SMEs have high intention to adopt halal traceability system (mean score of 4.25). From the Chi-square analysis result, there was a significant association between sales turnover and agro-food SMEs’ intention to adopt halal traceability system (p=0.046). This explained that the agro-food SMEs with low sales turnover tend to have high intention to adopt halal traceability system in order to upgrade their businesses. Independent-samples t-test revealed that there was a significant difference between sales turnover of low and high intention of agro-food SMEs to adopt halal traceability system; t(128) = 1.964, p = 0.052. This study concluded that the agrofood SMEs should be encouraged and exposed to the adoption of advanced technologies in the market.

Intangible distance may play a role as both trade barriers and competitive advantages in cross-border trade. Moreover, for agro-food products, intangible distance reflects the discrepancy between eating habits of the importing and exporting countries, and thus affects agro-food trade also as “eating-habit distance”. This paper investigates the effects of four dimensions of intangible distance on China’s agro-food exports, namely, cultural distance, institutional distance, distance in education, and distance in industrial development. A panel data of 78 countries covering the period 2002-2016 is used, and an extended gravity model is employed. We control for the effects of quality or level of institution, education, and industrial development of China and its trading partners to distinguish the “quality effects” from “distance effects” and to test the robustness of the results. To explore the (possible) different effects of intangible distance on different categories of agro-food products, we consider not only the total agro-food exports, but also the individual samples of the four agro-food categories classified according to the Harmonized System codes. We find that all these dimensions of intangible distance influence China’s agro-food exports significantly, at least for certain categories of agro-food products. Distance in institution, education, and industrial development function as measures of trade costs, whereas cultural distance functions more like a reflection of competitive advantage. Furthermore, when the distance in institution, education or industrial development increases in favor of the importing countries, the negative effects of intangible distance are partly neutralized by the importers’ improved level of institution, education or industrialization.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of institutional quality (IQ) in exporting and importing countries on agro-food exports from the world's leading emerging economies: Brazil, the Russian Federation, India and China (BRIC countries). Design/methodology/approach – Measuring is based on using the gravity trade model and econometric panel data analysis for the period 1998-2009. Findings – Agro-food exports from the BRIC countries, particularly Brazil and China, have increased. The Russian Federation has experienced stagnating and volatile patterns. Brazil and India have strengthened market shares in the existing importing markets, while the Russian Federation has experienced severe deterioration. The export of existing products is more important than of new products. Agro-food exports are positively associated with IQ and the size of the gross domestic product in exporting and importing countries, but negatively with distance. Research limitations/implications – Among IQ variables, the focus is on the indices of legal structure and security of property rights and freedom to trade internationally in agro-food importing countries and the BRIC exporting countries. Practical implications – Different institutions and their quality can affect agro-food exports differently. The impact of institutions is not uniform across product groups. Originality/value – This paper adds the impacts of IQ on agro-food exports. Except for processed products for final household consumption, agro-food exports from the BRIC countries are positively associated with the quality of the legal structure, the security of property rights and the freedom to trade internationally as IQ in exporting and importing countries.

The article is devoted to the study of the peculiarities of the formation of agri-food chains in foreign markets and the calculation of value added losses in export-import operations of agri-food. It is established that the share of the agricultural sector in the GDP of Ukraine is 10.2% at the lowest value added per employee 4801.4 dollars. USA. It is estimated that in 2010–2019, in the structure of Ukraine's exports, agricultural products provided 19% of foreign exchange earnings in 2011 and 40% in 2019, which is evidence of the strengthening of export positions of the studied sector of the economy in foreign markets. It was revealed that in 2019 the share of agri-food products was 44.3%, or 22.2 billion dollars. US, or increased by 19% compared to 2018, while total exports from the country during this period increased by only 6%. It is determined that in the structure of exports of agri-food products the share of plant products is 58%, and in the commodity structure of exports the largest share falls on cereals - 74%, as well as oilseeds - 20%. It is concluded that the export of agricultural food in 2010–2019 is formed by raw materials, while the value added of processed products - sunflower oil, poultry meat - is higher than that of grain. Threats to the functioning of agri-food supply chains to foreign markets caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and government actions of the world and Ukraine to ensure food security are systematized. It is substantiated that the structure of Ukraine's foreign trade is rational, as raw materials predominate in supplies to foreign markets, and technically complex products dominate in the structure of imports. It is estimated that the foreign trade balance of goods and services in 2019 is negative in the amount of 3.7 billion dollars, but improved by 2.5 billion dollars. relative to the 2018 figure. It is substantiated that in order to achieve a positive value of the foreign trade balance of Ukraine it is necessary to stimulate the development of food industries, ie products with high added value. It is analyzed that the increase in exports of agricultural raw materials leads to a shortfall in value added, and, consequently, the state budget loses significant revenues in the form of value added tax (processed agricultural products are subject to VAT on its exports), tax on profit, export duty (rate 18%, for the export of live farm animals). It was found that the value structure of agricultural imports is dominated by the group of "finished food products" (45%); the second position of agri-food imports is occupied by products of plant origin, the share of which is 31%; third - products of animal origin, whose share in the structure of imports is about 18%. It is suggested that state support instruments, such as VAT refunds, should only be used to stimulate high value-added industries. Key words: agri-food supply chains, export, import, foreign markets, value added.

Safeguarding the high quality of halal food products is a new realm to explore with the advent of new technologies. The efficiency of food industry management has boosted the applicability of product traceability system with the aid of the internet of things (IoT). Traceability system with the use of IoT has facilitated food industry players in managing their product information along the supply chain. As one of the halal food industry key players, halal agro-food small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are reportedly yet to embrace the adoption of IoT. With IoT, halal agro-food SMEs supply chain has undoubtedly provided a trusted platform. However, halal related issues and scandals in the market are recurring persistently. Besides, the emergence of IoT in the agriculture sector requires active involvement by halal agro-food SMEs. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the adoption of IoT among Malaysian halal agro-food SMEs and its challenges. A self-administered questionnaire was employed to gather data from selected 158 halal agro-food SMEs. Descriptive analysis, mean score analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out to analyze the data. The results showed a lack of IoT adoption among halal agro-food SMEs in managing their business activities. The SMEs were also found to be low tech-savvy users of IoT in managing their halal products. Therefore, a vast improvement is needed in implementing IoT among Malaysian halal agro-food SMEs.

Nowadays, technological advancement is in continuous development in all areas, including food packaging, which tries to find a balance between consumer preferences, environmental safety, and issues related to food quality and control. The present paper concretely details the concepts of smart, active, and intelligent packaging and identifies commercially available examples used in the food packaging market place. Along with this purpose, several bioactive compounds are identified and described, which are compounds that can be recovered from the by-products of the food industry and can be integrated into smart food packaging supporting the “zero waste” activities. The biopolymers obtained from crustacean processing or compounds with good antioxidant or antimicrobial properties such as carotenoids extracted from agro-industrial processing are underexploited and inexpensive resources for this purpose. Along with the main agro-industrial by-products, more concrete examples of resources are presented, such as grape marc, banana peels, or mango seeds. The commercial and technological potential of smart packaging in the food industry is undeniable and most importantly, this paper highlights the possibility of integrating the by-products derived compounds to intelligent packaging elements (sensors, indicators, radio frequency identification).

The paper presents the results obtained during the study of using digital technologies and successful practices of digitalization to increase efficiency of agricultural production and food products. Based on the analysis of economic publications of EconLit database in JEL macro categories as at the end of 2018, it has been revealed that the number of foreign and domestic publications on digitalization of agro-food complex for the period 2010-2018 is generally insufficient, with no any significant increase in the publications in this category being found. The proposed approach for the first time links such categories as digital technology, needs and agro-food complex by taking into account a set of consumer characteristics of agricultural and food products and production technologies. In order to assess the sectoral digital needs, the article considers such significant characteristics as the end-product complexity index, high value added products environment within the product category and their relationship with production technologies. The study proposes a methodology for determining digital priorities of agro-food products based on such characteristics as complexity index of products, product environment and its relationship with production technologies. The proposed approach develops the modern theory of economic complexity and allows us to assess the possibilities of using artificial intelligence technologies and big data analysis based on the linkage between upstream and downstream in value chain cycle activities.

The study is devoted to the development of approach to comprehensive assessment of the regional agro-food industry development problems. This task was solved using the methods of expert assessment and statistical analysis of their results. We have substantiated a system of agro-food industry development indicators, which covers the level of enterprises and the level of government. Approbation of the proposed approach using the example of the Republic of Crimea revealed the key problems. At the enterprise level: low level of development of advanced technologies, low share of innovative products, ineffective organization of cause-and-effect analysis, insufficient scientific feasibility of technological processes. At the state level: insufficiently effective state regulation in the field of import substitution, insufficient stimulation of demand for domestic products of the processing industry of the agro-industrial complex (AIC), insufficient state stimulation of the production of highquality domestic products, insufficient level of scientific research support. This allows determining the priority directions for the development of recommendations and the implementation of actions to ensure the regional agro-food industry development.

Introduction. Food security has not been a concern of any particular state and is a global problem for already a long time. It, as an economic category in the scientific literature, is considered from the position of ensuring the security of the global world problem, regions, individual countries, population groups and individual people. It is a multifaceted issue, closely linked to other security issues, and has a great impact on the national safety situation, which in turn is an economic, social and political category. COVID-19 has created a large-scale economic crisis. The pandemic has had a major impact on food security and the field of nutrition. The crisis has affected food systems and threatened public access to food, raising the issue of food self-sufficiency in countries.Aim and tasks. In order to assess food security, the paper examines the self-sufficiency coefficients of basic agro-food products in Georgia under the conditions of the World Pandemic, and evaluates its components: local production, import, export. In addition, local production trends have been analyzed, Results. Thus a study of the current state of the agro-food sector shows that the problem of providing the population with food is becoming more acute. The pace of development of the agro-food sector lags significantly behind the growth rates of other sectors of the economy. The current economic growth has not yet created the conditions for sustainable economic development: The level of supply of essential agro-food products is quite low, the number of jobs has not increased substantially, the level of income is low, poverty rates are still high and the food deficit is filled mainly with imported products.Conclusions. This study showed that the issue of the food security is still unresolved for Georgia. Despite the state support activities, the agro-food sector still needs assistance. We have developed recommendations, the consideration of which will significantly contribute to food supply of the markets and food supply to the population. Keywords: agro-food products, local production, food independence, self-sufficiency coefficients.

The growing concern about quality in food products has substantially increased the competitiveness of agro-food products that possess quality-system certifications compared to non-certificated products. This research focused on understanding how consumer trust is greater when agro-food products have a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). In particular, we analyze whether the influence of consumers’ perceived quality of a PDO product has a direct effect on their perceived risk or whether this relationship is mediated by consumer trust, which can help us advance in the study of consumer behavior within the agro-food marketing discipline. Our findings obtained through the comparison of two models, the proposal and another rival, suggest that the initially proposed model present a better fit and explains the relationships better than the rival model, which highlights the essential role of consumer trust in explaining consumers’ perceived risk and their subsequent purchasing behavior. Consequently, managers should pay special attention to consumer trust because trust is the key mediating aspect which allows the incorporation of characteristics highly valued by consumers in food products like origin, tradition and production methods to reduce perceived risk.

The agricultural policy actions of the EC have weakened the mutual trading position of Scandinavia very strongly in basic temperate agricultural products but improved it in other types of agro-food products. The massive supports and trade regulations of the EC have also increased its mutual competitiveness in agro-food compared to all traded items. In recent years are direction of agricultural policy has started in the EC from price support and increasing productivity to production cutbacks and direct income support. This seems to be the same path as the Scandinavian countries had to take earlier.

Communication and logistics are one of the most important features of the markets; they permeate and constitute its content. Communication and logistics for commodity producers are also as important attribute as production itself, and sometimes even more. For this reason, commodity producers themselves directly and explicitly, but more often through other institutions (including the government), tend to set up stable exclusive communication systems and logistics. This article analyzes the state of the prospects for the formation of communications and logistics networks for agricultural products. The correlation of existing communications and logistics of agricultural products and other types of products (including finished industrial products of various purposes: from machinery, equipment, chemical products to defense, hydrocarbon, carbon and other raw materials, timber and other goods) is analyzed. The established linkages are revealed. They were quantified, calibrated and classified. The existing principles (comparative and absolute advantages) are reviewed and new principles are formulated (marginal player, marginal linkages), which describe the real situation in the markets of agricultural products more correctly. New criteria for grouping and reformatting existing communication and logistics networks, which make it possible to increase the competitiveness of domestic agricultural products are proposed.

Nowadays, the agro-food industry generates high amounts of byproducts that may possess added value compounds with high functionality and/or bioactivity. Additionally, consumers’ demand for healthier foodstuffs has increased over the last years, and thus the food industry has strived to answer this challenge. Byproducts are generally secondary products derived from primary agro-food production processes and represent an interesting and cheaper source of potentially functional ingredients, such as peptides, carotenoids, and phenolic compounds, thus promoting a circular economy concept. The existing body of work has shown that byproducts and their extracts may be successfully incorporated into foodstuffs, for instance, phenolic compounds from eggplant can be potentially used as a mulfitunctional food additive with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and food colorant properties. As such, the aim of this review is to provide insights into byproducts and their potential as new sources of foodstuffs additives.

Arab intra-regional trade in agro-food accounts for more than half of the total Arab agro-food trade, displaying strong “trade-intensity” over the past decade. This indicates the potential of developing agro-food regional production networks aligning with the region’s comparative advantage in agro-food products. However, intermediates trade, as an indicator of value chain integration, has been low and sluggish due to various structural and policy factors. This article aims to analyze the determinants of trade in agro-food intermediates in the Arab region, focusing on the role and significance of regional trade arrangements and trade facilitation. The Broad Economic Category (BEC) classification is used to categorize goods into intermediate and final goods. Our analysis, using the gravity model, shows that regional trade arrangements in their current form do not significantly affect regional trade (except in the Gulf Cooperation Council [GCC]). We also reveal that timeliness in export delivery is an important determinant of trade in agro-food intermediates. Thus, Arab countries should simplify their customs clearance procedures and engage in a deeper form of regional integration to help build trade corridors and enhance regional value-added chains (RVCs).

Purpose – Agricultural food residues (agro-residues) receive low economic returns and experience disposal problems. The food production and processing is often not configured to supply agro-residues for production of bioenergy needed in food processing. The feasibility of utilising agro-residues through advances in postharvest technology for sustainable bioenergy conversion is reviewed. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach – Agro-residues from maize, sugarcane and potatoes in five African countries were assessed from secondary data to identify suitable conversion technologies, energy products and configurations of bioenergy plants for applications in postharvest food processing. Findings – Strategic alignment of postharvest technology to bioenergy production systems is vital to advancing both food production and bioenergy that benefit rural communities in Africa. High economic returns are possible when the bioenergy plants are either annexure to existing agro-processing operations or operate as a biorefinery. Research limitations/implications – Assessment of energy self-sufficiency of food production and processing systems is required. Practical implications – Agro-residues for bioenergy production require investments in infrastructure for storage, transportation and processing of the residues, and development of new risk management techniques. Social implications – The rural communities will be energy secure resulting in food security through reduced postharvest losses and increased agricultural productivity. Originality/value – The study stimulates innovative thinking in establishing sustainable bioenergy systems for food processes.

Changes in Malaysian’s lifestyle have resulted in an increased demand for trusted agrofood products. Therefore, it is becoming a challenge for halal-certified agro-food SMEs in Malaysia to fulfil the demand by implementing marketing strategies and innovative market orientation. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between marketing strategies and innovative market orientation on performance of halal-certified agro-food SMEs. A systematic random sampling was used to select 321 halal-certified agro-food SMEs located in Peninsular Malaysia and a self-administered questionnaire using a structured questionnaire was employed to obtain responses from the target SMEs. Descriptive analysis, Chi-square analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out to analyse the data. Majority of the halal-certified agro-food SMEs involved in the study were categorised as small-sized companies with at least 5 to 75 employees. The finding revealed that there was no association between annual average sales and overall performance of halal-certified agro-food SMEs. The finding further indicated that there was a strong positive relationship between the performance (market share, sales, profitability, and growth rate) of halal-certified agro-food SMEs and marketing strategies and innovative market orientation. It is suggested that the halal-certified agro-food SMEs utilize their experience to develop more effective marketing strategies for better performance.

Findings From the raw analysis of responses, professionals show awareness about the importance of end-user involvement and they are eager to incorporate innovative farmers and early adopters to collect the best requirements for products and services. They also declare knowledge and uptake in their companies of new approaches, such as agile. Confronting results with literature, the discussion highlights some inconsistencies and possibilities for leveraging. Types of end-users considered should be enlarged. Their superficial participation must also be avoided. Originality/value There is a lack of research on procedures for projects in agro-food sector. Due to the momentum in the digital transformation of agriculture, there are many project teams working in developing DPS and are relevant to discuss about proper methodologies for improving success.

Food crops added value is obtained by the process of being processed products through the role of agro-industry. In the era of globalization, Indonesia must immediately implement the development of agro-industries to produce highly competitive trade products and be able to gain global market share. The success of implementing agro-industry is the support and support of the government to increase farmers' income in an effort to realize their welfare. This paper aims to express more comprehensively of food crop-based agro-industry products development acceleration to produce quality processed products, and agricultural functions roles institutions empowerment and high efficiency seriously and sustainably. The acceleration of the implementation of agro-industry is predicted as one of the solutions to efficiency, effectiveness, continuity and the continuity of the trade in processed products rather than raw materials, labor and capital of processed products. It is necessary to increase the competitiveness of Indonesian agroindustry products which have been dominated by raw materials, which only rely on comparative advantages of natural resource abundance and uneducated labor. Obtained agricultural products processed added value that are competitive and meet the high demands of quality and hygiene (GMP), increase in income and welfare of farmers and processed business actors, as well as the transfer of exports of raw materials to processed products. Streszczenie:
The peculiarities of creation and functioning of agro-food chains based on the study of scientific works were generalized, which allowed to establish a variety of approaches to the definition of agro-food chains and their structure. The study describes the understanding of agribusiness supply chains based on global and local approaches to their functioning, and the "smart" supply chain of agro-food. The main flows in the agro-food chain have been identified, namely: physical (agricultural raw materials, agro-food, logistics operators etc.), information, financial flows, as well as knowledge and experience of management. The purpose of the article is to synthesize scientific approaches to understanding the concept of supply chain and agro-food chain in domestic and foreign practice, systematization of the principles and basic business processes of their functioning, as well as identification of the main factors of the external and internal environment of their functioning in modern conditions. It is highlighted that the main approaches to the interpretation of the supply chain are process and object approaches, both in foreign and domestic practice. Particular attention is paid to the specifics of the functioning of global agro-food chains, which are not considered by academics as buyer-seller relations in the open market, but as coordinated chains of interactions that occur under the influence of key agents in these chains. These leading global chain members control other members of the chain, which has led to increased pressure, primarily on agricultural producers and processors. The scientific opinions on the understanding and specificity of the functioning of alternative supply chains of agro-food, which give rise to economic, social and / or environmental benefits, are generalized. The directions of development of local agro-food chains in domestic conditions and their influence on creation of competitive rural territories are grounded. The factors of the external and internal environment of functioning of agro-food chains and the directions of influence of their changes on the stability of their development, in particular, globalization of climate change, innovation development, and others, are systematized. The necessity of developing additional adaptations to the listed changes in other sectors – transport, storage and energy systems – has been proved, which actualizes the need for strengthening integration and cooperation between the participants of the supply chain. The main goals of the functioning of agro-food chains are highlighted: increase of competitiveness of products, achievement of economic interests of all participants of chain, sustainable development of rural territories, more efficient satisfaction of needs of end users. Achievement of these goals can only be achieved on the basis of observance of the principles of sustainable development and innovation of the chain, resource-saving development of production activities. It is emphasized that the question remains, both in practical and methodical aspects, as to the distortion of the information flow in agro-food chains, especially in chains with a large number of participants and numerous connections between them. In domestic practice, the issue of improving the quality and safety of agri-food products in agricultural supply chains needs to be actualized. Key words: supply chain, agro-food chain, global chains, local agricultural chains, demand chains, logistic chains, "smart" chains.
