Participating in agribusiness value chains is significant for growth and development of an economy. Women have been noted to have low participation in agribusiness activities as compared to men because women face challenges such as inaccessibility and ownership of assets, social cultural hindrances, lower market innovativeness and versatility factors. To reduce these challenges faced by women agri-preneurs, there is need to adopt agribusiness diversification to ensure the success of agribusiness enterprises. The aim of this study was to determine the factors that influence the number of agribusiness lines that female agri-preneurs participate in. This study was carried out in Njoro and Molo Sub-counties in Nakuru County, Kenya between March and August 2023. A standard Poisson regression model was carried out to examine the number of agribusiness lines that female agri-preneurs have to maximize revenue and spread risks associated with post production agribusiness activities such as selling, distribution and value addition of agricultural products. The study sampled 267 female in agribusinesses, both group participants and non-participants. Data processing was done using SPSS and STATA software. The results showed that age, education level, Leadership position, size of agribusiness enterprise, time taken in the agribusiness activities and ability of the female agri-preneurs to borrow loans positively influence the number of agribusiness lines that women agri-preneurs have.

For agribusinesses in developing economies to realize their potential, enhancing their overall performance in terms of capacity utilisation is essential. The objective of thiepaper is to provide information on the determinants of capacity utilization among agribusinesses in Nigeria. Providing this information is necessary to deliver good policies and strategic support from governments as well as providing a favourable business environment that will help agribusinesses reach their potential. This study adopted the survey design. Data were collected from 2014 the World Bank Enterprise survey. Purposive sampling technique was used to select all the agribusiness enterprise categories included in the World Bank data. These categories include food, tobacco, textiles, garments, leather, wood, and paper industries. The data were analyzed with instrumental variable estimation technique. Result from the analysis showed that size of enterprise and legal status were statistically significantly different from zero at 1% level of significance while Experience of top manager was found to be significant at 5% per cent level of significance. The result, therefore, revealed the existence of significant effects of firm characteristics on capacity utilization of agribusiness firms. Among other things, effort must be made to harness the potential of women agribusiness leaders, as well as small agribusinesses in the country as they appeared to be the most efficient and performing entity in the country. No previous study in the country has been carried out to uncover these determinants and how they can be improved to deliver a robust agribusiness sector.

The article is devoted to researching peculiarities and trends of foreign economic activity of agribusinesses in the Western region of Ukraine according to the terms of the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement. The authors discuss the theoretical essence of agribusiness, as a kind of entrepreneurship, and the nature of foreign economic activity of enterprises. The main conditions of free trade in agricultural products introduced by the terms of the Agreement are determined and their influence on agribusiness export-import operation dynamics in the Western economic region is analyzed. The contribution of certain regions to forming agrarian product export and import volume and structure is considered and the reasons for the considerable advantages of the Lviv region in foreign trade turnover of the Western region are elucidated. It was found that agribusiness cooperation with foreign partners is mainly realized by indirect methods through trade agency organizations or agrarian holding companies. The structure dynamics of production goods for export and import by agribusinesses was studied. Based on the results, some negative tendencies for the Ukrainian economy were noted. They include the preservation of raw exports with a high share of plant origin products and timber, and the predominance of ready-made products with high added value in the import structure. It was established that the Agreement and social political events in Ukraine changed the direction of some export-import flows of agribusiness from CIS countries towards the markets of the European Union and Asian countries. According to the scale of external trade operations with enterprises of the Western region of Ukraine, in general, and within certain trade groups, in particular, country-leaders are defined. Some positive and negative consequences of changes in the foreign economic activity vector are described. And finally, measures which will ensure an expansion and strengthening of Ukraine’s agribusiness presence on international market, are suggested.

The rapid development of digital finance in China has subtly influenced many aspects of social and economic development. However, agricultural enterprises can hardly enjoy the same digital dividend as traditional enterprises because of special attributes such as internal and external resource constraints, environmental constraints and cyclicality. To clarify the relationship between digital finance and digital transformation of agribusiness, and also to explore the factors that influence the effectiveness of digital finance, we use the “Peking University Digital Finance Index” to evaluate the micro impact of digital finance on the digital transformation of agribusiness. The results show that there is a “transition period” in which digital finance contributes to the digital transformation of agribusinesses, i.e., the two show a U-shaped non-linear relationship. This effect still exists after considering endogeneity and a series of robustness tests. In addition, further research determined that financing constraints and financial risk are the key paths through which digital finance affects the digital transformation of agribusinesses. Effective financial regulation weakens the U-shaped relationship between digital finance and agribusiness digital transformation and is an important means of attenuating the negative impact of digital finance. Overall, we provide a micro explanation for the accelerated popularization of digital finance in emerging markets, which is urgently needed for most agribusinesses seeking high-quality development.

Entrepreneurship and innovation are the fuel of economic growth. Understanding the motivational factors that lead to the success of entrepreneurs in agribusiness can be useful in affecting the degree of successful investment that accelerates development and economic growth in the agriculture sector. In this study, we investigated the factors affecting the success of entrepreneurs in the agribusiness sector in Mashhad, Iran, using a two-stage Heckman approach. Factors affecting the success or failure of agribusiness entrepreneurship have received less attention in the literature. In this study, the aim was to determine the factors affecting agricultural entrepreneurship success and entrepreneurs’ profits. We generated the data for this study by designing a questionnaire and conducting a survey of active entrepreneurs in Mashhad in 2020. The results showed that entrepreneurship experience, risk-taking behavior, interest rates, and initial capital have a significant impact on the probability of entrepreneurship success and entrepreneur’s profits. Policies that could improve the skills of entrepreneurs, provision of initial capital requirements, and financial market efficiency had an effective role in increasing entrepreneurship and innovation in the agribusiness sector. Entrepreneurs in the field of agriculture could consider these factors to have better choices while entering or continuing with their agribusinesses. Our recommendation to policymakers and agribusiness leaders is to establish a friendlier and more stable environment for entrepreneurship and employ policies that help reduce the risk of entrepreneurs’ initial investment returns.

Agriculture decision support systems (DSSs) play an important role in facilitating evidence-based agricultural decision-making for improving agribusiness productivity. Evaluating and selecting the most appropriate agriculture DSS for sustainable agribusiness is, however, challenging due to the existence of production and marketing alternatives, a variety of objective functions from economic to lifestyle to long-term sustainability, and the subjectiveness and imprecision involved in the evaluation process. To help decision makers effectively deal with these issues, this paper presents a multicriteria analysis approach for evaluating and selecting the most appropriate agriculture DSS for sustainable agribusiness. The subjective assessments of decision makers in the evaluation process are formulated using linguistic variables approximated by fuzzy numbers. The concept based on the positive and the negative ideal solutions is applied for producing a performance index value for every agriculture DSS alternative across all evaluation criteria based on which the most appropriate agriculture DSS is. An empirical study is presented for demonstrating the step-wise process for evaluating and selecting the most appropriate agriculture DSS for sustainable agribusiness. The outcome from the performance evaluation process allows agribusinesses to effectively adopt appropriate agriculture DSSs for achieving competitive advantages.

According to the results of the analysis, certain taxonomic groups (clusters) were identified that allowed to display similar regional conditions within each group along with specifying regions with crop and livestock farming within one cluster, represented by Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Rivne regions. For further research, agribusinesses were selected out of the above regions and their competitive positions were analyzed. A fuzzy-set method was used to identify the impact of sustainable development, in particular the level of economic, social and environmental sustainability of regions on the competitive position of agribusinesses. The input parameters are represented by economic, environmental and social sustainability indices, each of them is assigned specific characteristics and classified. In addition, using variance analysis, key reference indicators were calculated and the boundaries were set. The output data are determined by the level of agribusiness competitiveness in Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Rivne regions (selected by the results of cluster analysis). According to the calculations results, linguistic evaluation was performed, based on variance analysis of terms. Modeling of the surface of the forecast values was carried out which revealed that the above the average level of agribusiness competitiveness is accompanied by a high level of economic sustainability, average level of environmental sustainability and the below average social stability level.

This study investigates the influence of distinct marketing strategies—product, promotion, price, and place strategies—on the performance of agribusinesses in the North-Central region of Nigeria. Leveraging a sample size of 338 from a population of 2,216 registered agribusinesses across five selected states, a cross-sectional survey design was employed to analyze the relationships between the chosen independent variables and critical performance indicators namely; profit, sales volume, market share, and customer loyalty. The results from four regression models underscore the degree of impacts of marketing strategies on performance metrics. Notably, promotion and place strategies emerge as significant drivers of increased sales volume and enhanced customer loyalty, respectively. Conversely, product strategy exhibits a minimal effect on profit, while price strategy strongly influences market share. These findings offer actionable insights for agribusiness practitioners and policymakers to optimize their marketing approaches for improved performance and sustainable performance in the agribusiness sector.

Maintaining valid financial records is critical to making informed decisions about its operations. With no clear record-keeping incentives, farmers should miss important data on income, expenses, profitability, and financial health. The main objective of this research study was to assess the effects of proper financial record-keeping and sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda (case study: Moozay’s Dairy and Crop Farm Limited). The specific objectives of this study included assessing the effect of purchase bookkeeping on sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda, analyzing the effect of sales bookkeeping on sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda, and determining the effect of cash bookkeeping on sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda. This study is based on agency theory, double-entry bookkeeping theory, and accounting theory. A mixed-methods research design of descriptive and correlational studies was employed to collect both quantitative and qualitative information for analysis. The primary data were gathered by distributing questionnaires to a randomly chosen group of employees working in the finance department at Moozay's Dairy and Crop Farm Ltd. The targeted population of this study was equal to 100 respondents, and the sample population of this study is equal to 80 respondents. The data analysis procedure involved both quantitative and qualitative processes. Purchase book keeping (β=0.248, t=2.654), sales book keeping (β=0.330, t=3.321), and cash book keeping (β=0.337, t=3.331) indicate that for every one-unit increase in these variables, there is a corresponding increase in the sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Moozay's Dairy and Crop Farm Limited. Furthermore, the significance values (Sig. 0.010, 0.001, 0.001) associated with these financial record-keeping variables are all notably below the typical significance level (0.05), demonstrating their strong statistical significance and emphasizing their significant roles in contributing to the sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda. Also, the findings showed an R value of 0.855, an R square value of 0.731, and an adjusted R square value of 0.720, which indicates that the model adequately accounts for 73.1% of the variation in project success. Overall, Moozay's Dairy and Crop Farm Limited's research revealed strong agreement among respondents about the significant impact of financial record-keeping, which includes purchase, sales, and cash book keeping, on the sustainable growth of agribusiness enterprises in Rwanda. The study recommended Moozay's Dairy and Crop Farm Limited to provide periodic training and capacity building for staff to enhance cash bookkeeping practices in agribusinesses in Rwanda. Moozay’s Dairy and Crop Farm Ltd. is recommended to set policy action to enforce financial record keeping. Additionally, lawmakers should pass and strictly enforce a law on financial records in agribusinesses and other businesses. Moozay’s Dairy and Crop Farm Ltd. should be highly concerned about purchase bookkeeping as one of the tools to improve and increase its financial performance.

This study examined the impact on income of small-scale beef cattle enterprise in Pabna and Sirajganj districts. Data were obtained from 180 cattle fattening participant farmers and 180 non participant farmers from two areas in January and December 2014. Data were collected through the use of structured survey schedules and analyzed by the use of descriptive statistical tools such as means and percentages and also paired t-statistics and chow test were used for the data analysis The Double-Difference (DD) estimator is used to estimate changes in income from before to after benefiting from beef cattle agribusiness between participant farmers and non-participant farmers. Result shows that the net farm income of beef cattle agribusiness entrepreneur increases from BDT 6791.17 before participant to BDT 10289.65 after participant of cattle fattening. There was also an increase in the net farm income of the non-participant farmers from BDT 6750.01to BDT 8437.51during beef cattle agribusiness study. On the average, the net farm income of participant farmers increased by 51.52% and non-participant increased by only 25.0%. The mean increased income was significantly different between participants and non-participant farmers of beef cattle fattening at 10% level of significance. Chow test analysis showed a significant change between the coefficients and intercept of the respondents’ income implying that beef cattle agribusiness contributed positively to the increased income realized by the farmers over that of non-farmers. Hence, it can be conducted that beef cattle agribusiness has positive impact on income of the farmers. The study recommends intensive support services from government and non government institutions to improve the performance of the beef cattle agribusiness.J. Bangladesh Agril. The key areas for improving agribusiness sustainability and responsibility are related to environmental, economic, health and social factors. Companies recognize that integrating the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) approach into their operations not only contributes to eliminating negative environmental and social impacts, but can also be a source of competitive advantage. A more sustainable company can attract investors who are committed to ESG principles. Incorporating an ESG approach into business planning minimizes risk and maximizes the efficiency of agribusiness projects. The novelty of the research lies in identifying and describing specific ESG metrics in the business planning process, both quantitative, measurable indicators, and qualitative ones, to motivate agribusinesses to improve their financial performance.. The study places a particular emphasis on environmental and social performance. The authors have formulated methodological approaches for the use of ESG principles in business planning for investment projects in the agribusiness sector. The integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ESG principles into the sections of a business plan is presented in the form of a conceptual scheme. Using this relationship, companies should strive to incorporate various ESG trends into their business plans. Based on the analysis of rating agency data, business benchmarking in the agribusiness sector is presented, and sustainable development projects are discussed. The concept of sustainable agriculture is interpreted to include projects such as the implementation of precision farming technology, the automation of business processes, the improvement of soil fertility and productivity, land reclamation, the use of fallow land and the use of crop rotations optimised to maintain soil quality. The practical significance is defined in the identified ESG practices and the opportunities for their incorporation into business plans for the agribusiness investment projects.

Identifying the factors that influence competitiveness is imperative in order, to appreciate the position of the firm in relation to its environment and to propose appropriate measures and strategies for increasing competitiveness of agribusiness firms. The study sought to determine the competitiveness of the agribusiness sector in Swaziland and to identify the factors affecting competitiveness. Porter’s (1998) theory of the determinants of competitive advantage was applied in the analysis. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that the top 3 constraining factors to competitiveness were: the unavailability of professional labour (mean = 1.63); high cost of supplies/inputs (mean = 1.69); incompetence of public sector personnel (mean = 1.69); ineffective public sector personnel (mean = 1.88) and the size of the local market (mean = 1.88). The enhancing factors to competitiveness were: production of affordable high quality products (mean = 4.19); availability of water for industrial purposes (mean = 4.00) and affordable cost of unskilled labour (mean = 3.94). The results further indicate that the agribusiness sector is constrained, suggesting that the environment is not enabling for agribusinesses to be competitive. It is recommended that other markets be explored in order to expand the export base, which could be carried out through product diversification.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether agribusiness could be competitive compared to non-agribusiness employment opportunities in terms of technical efficiency and profitability. We used data collected on all seven operating cassava community processing centers (CCPCs) and 150 comparable non-agribusiness enterprises in South Kivu province. A Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), as well as cost–benefit ratios and net monthly revenue, were used to examine technical efficiency and profitability. Our results showed that agribusiness was more competitive than non-agribusiness in terms of technical efficiency and profitability. The cost–benefit ratio shows that every dollar invested in agribusiness earns investors US $2.8, while it earns investors in non-agribusiness US $2.1. Moreover, technical efficiency increases significantly with agribusiness. These results show that agribusiness can compete with other non-agribusiness activities, and it remains a solution to youth unemployment in the region.

Abstract (EN) Energy production through biomass valorization seems to find favor with the most recent energy policies: in order to reach a sustainable balance between production and energy use the agriculture seems to play an important role. The use of biomass for energy valorization, indeed, could be further increased and meets different needs: it alleviates energy dependence, propels the technological innovation of companies and rural areas, and promotes the multifunctional nature of modern agriculture. Nevertheless these dynamics generate a debate about the use of agricultural lands and crops for energy purpose and, finally, the same concept of agribusiness seem to be under evolution: a summary about the Italian legislative scenario on the agribusiness's concept shows how relations between energy and agriculture is extending the traditional scope and definitions of agribusiness and possible criticisms arising.

The study examined the influence of entrepreneurship practices on agribusiness transformation among agribusiness owners in the Mbeya region. Specifically, it examined the effect of agricultural production technologies on postharvest storage and assessed the effect of marketing practices and agro-processing practices on agribusiness transformation. It explored the effect of vertical function on agribusiness transformation on grains. A cross-sectional study design consisting of both qualitative and quantitative data was applied. A sample of 254 agribusiness owners involved in grain production was purposively selected. The study used interviews and structured questionnaires to collect primary data. The reliability and validity test generated an estimated Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.889, which indicates good internal consistency. Multiple Ordinal Logistic Regression was used to determine the influence of entrepreneurship practices on agribusiness transformation. The finding shows that there is insignificant influence (p > 0.05) of agricultural production technology practices on agribusiness transformation, whereas postharvest storage, marketing and agro-processing practices indicate significant influence on agribusiness transformation (P<0.05). However, the moderation role of vertical function reveals significant negative prediction (-1.193) on agribusiness transformation. Correlation analysis reveals a significant positive, strong correlation between marketing practices and total agribusiness transformation. Government and key actors in the agribusiness value chain are advised to formulate and implement appropriate policies, programs, and strategies to enhance appropriate entrepreneurship practices necessary for agribusiness transformation

<p>The emergence and proliferation of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) in Malawi gave rise to the need for empirical research to assess their role on growth of small-scale agribusiness entrepreneurs. The paper gives the details of the results of a study which was conducted in Malawi to analyze the role of microfinance on the growth of small-scale agribusinesses in Lilongwe District. A financing constraint approach was applied using logit model to determine factors affecting investments of small-scale agribusiness entrepreneurs. The approach stipulates that entrepreneurs in areas with significant presence of MFIs (unconstrained) rely less on internal funds (average profits) for their investment decisions than areas with limited presence of MFIs (constrained). A T-test was also used to compare investment levels of unconstrained and constrained firms to support the results obtained from the financing constraint approach.</p><p>Loans were among the products which were found to be offered by MFIs although their accessibility was affected by, among others, high interest rates. The logit model revealed that for each additional profit the probability of investment decreased by 46 percent in constrained firms and 39 percent in unconstrained firms. However, the T-test results revealed no significant difference in levels of investments between unconstrained firms and constrained firms. These results show no significant role of MFIs on growth of small-scale agribusiness entrepreneur. The results have insinuated the review of MFI loans conditions such as interest rates if they are to have a significant role on growth of small-scale agribusiness entrepreneurs.</p>

Abstract Grower tours, one of the most effective agricultural extension teaching methods (13), have been conducted for many years to production areas generally unfamiliar to participating growers and agribusiness people. Most consist simply of a sequence of visits to farms or agribusinesses where the owners (managers) of the visited businesses explain the operation observed as the tour proceeds through the facility.

Streszczenie:
This study was conducted in Haiphong (Vietnam) during 2013-2014 to analyse the requirements for the success of small-scale agribusinesses. Following two baseline studies on the current state of the local farming systems and market situations, various stakeholders were engaged in a number of workshops with support of a causal loop diagram (CLD) modelling tool to redefine the pre-requisites for agribusiness success and their interplays. As a result, multi-stakeholder collaboration and government support via its policies and development programs were identified as the necessary conditions for success. Nonetheless, strengthening the capacity of local cooperatives and investing in human and social capitals are of equal importance as sufficient conditions, which generate multiple benefits towards achieving agribusiness success. Values of full participation by all stakeholders and the use of the CLD in defining systemic interventions are also discussed.

Streszczenie:
This paper aimed to assess the involvement of child labour in agribusinesses as well as the schooling pattern of children involved in these agribusinesses in Cameroon. For this study, some descriptive statistics and cross tabulations were computed using SPSS.20 and stata 13 software packages. The population of this study was made up of 51,190 individuals of both sexes that were concerned by the third Cameroon National Household Survey. The sample drawn from this population was constituted of individuals of age 5-17 years old, making a total of 17,550 children. The main results of this study revealed that agribusiness child labour was present everywhere in Cameroon and by both boys and girls. Children of all ages of the sample were concerned by the phenomenon and their level of education was essentially the primary. The impact of agribusiness child labour on education was positive because it helped the working and schooling children to provide means to finance their education and other needs. On the other hand, it has a negative impact on education because some children went for these jobs and finally stayed there and did not return back to school.Int. J. Agril. Res.
