AbstractLean design and agile design paradigms have been proposed for designing robots; yet, none of them could strike a balance between cost-effectiveness and short duration of the design process without compromising the quality of performance. The present article identifies the key determinants of the mobile robots development process. It also identifies empirically the mobile robot design activities and strategies with the most influence on mobile robot performance. The study identified statistically the mobile robot design activities and strategies most positively correlated with mobile robot performance. The results showed that 65% of typical mobile robot design activities and strategies are affiliated with the lean design paradigm, while the remaining 35% are affiliated with the agile design paradigm. In addition, it was found that 22% of the lean mobile robot design activities and strategies and 25% of the agile mobile robot design activities and strategies, significantly with 99% confidence, are among the design activities and strategies most positively correlated with improving mobile robot performance. A hybrid lean-agile design paradigm is thus proposed.

Due to digital transformation, technology advancements, telework, we can no longer pretend that traditional work offers high incentives and efficiency, but on the contrary, traditional work falls behind each year, deeming organizations and individuals to adopt the agile work. Rapid technological developments have altered the way businesses operate, with the goal of producing viable solutions in an environment fraught with unpredictability. This paper is a theoretical narrative review on the general topic of agile work. The present paper addresses the issue of determining the best international practices for implementing agile methodology at work, carrying out a theoretical narrative review. Basing on literature on present-day theory the authors make an attempt to explain the implications of implementing agile methodologies into organizational culture, summarize existing approaches to classifying the main effects on implementing agile methodologies at work, consolidate and document best international practices for agile methodologies development among employers. After defining the concepts of agile method tailoring and agile maturity, the data obtained in the theoretical narrative analysis reveal that the implementing agile methodologies have a direct impact on management style, on teams, on learning environments, and on employee’s mental health. An overall conclusions and discussions section is presented along with the personal opinion of authors. This work is intended to open a post-pandemic agile work research methodology, since there are no systematic approaches to this topic.

Software engineering companies have progressively incorporated agile project management methodologies. Initially, this migration occurred mostly in the context of startups, but in recent years it has also sparked interest from other companies with larger and more geographically dispersed teams. One of the frameworks used for large-scale agile implementation is the LeSS framework. This study seeks to explore how Management 3.0 principles can be applied in the context of the ten practices proposed in the LeSS framework. To this end, a qualitative research methodology based on four case studies is used to identify and explore the role of Management 3.0 in software management and development processes that adopt this agile paradigm. The findings show that the principles of Management 3.0 are relevant to the implementation of the LeSS framework practices, especially in fostering team values and personal values; however, distinct principles between the two paradigms are also identified, namely the greater rigidity of processes advocated in the LeSS framework and a greater focus on process automation.

Due to the consequences of global software development (GSD), the traditional approaches of software development evolved into lightweight agile methods. The agile methods got overwhelming response from software development companies due to their obvious support to GSD. In this regard, limited research work has been presented on software process evolution and process paradigm shift in context of GSD. Most of the work presented on GSD mainly focus on the companies in Europe, America, Australia and other western countries. Existing research work highlight the standard benefits and challenges of GSD but do not investigate its effect on software development processes and associated reasons causing the affect particularly in Malaysian software development companies. The research work presented in this paper addresses this issue and investigates the effects of GSD on software processes, software process evolution and paradigm shift and finds the current software processes being used in Malaysian companies. Also, it further determines the GSD factors and reasons behind the change and selection of a software development process. GSD factors affecting the software processes have been termed as challenges. Structured interviews have been conducted to collect qualitative data from industry professionals involved in GSD. General inductive approach has been used for qualitative data analysis and findings. The results show that after GSD, Malaysian companies are mostly following agile methods. The traditional and ad-hoc approaches used before GSD have been replaced by the lightweight agile methodologies. Few of the companies are still following ad-hoc approaches mainly due to size of the project and company as most of the Malaysian companies are small and medium size. The research is significant that it provides clear insight into software process paradigm in Malaysian companies. The outcome of the research provides foundations for the standardization of software processes, process improvement, selection and quality enhancement approaches in Malaysian companies.

Agile software development, a paradigm that emphasizes project team autonomy and the value of responding to changes over following standardized processes, has gained prominence in the software industry. Prior investigations on the adoptions of agile paradigms for software operations and their performance implications have typically focused on isolated aspects of software development processes. In this study, we adopt a configurational perspective of software operations and assess the causal impacts of adopting an organizational policy that grants higher levels of autonomy to project teams. Building on the equifinality framework proposed in organizational studies, we posit that an organizational policy that provides higher levels of autonomy for software teams engenders performance-enhancing adaptations through agile reconfigurations of project operations. To test our hypothesis, we collaborated with a commercial software firm and collected data from a policy experiment at the firm. We examined project-level data spanning a four-year observation period during which the firm implemented a new policy that significantly reduced the hurdles for project teams to autonomously reconfigure their operations. The results support our postulation and shed light on how an organizational policy that provides greater autonomy to software

Computation intelligence techniques are important for making decisions in an agile-based offshore software development paradigm. Offshore development faces additional challenges, such as trust, communication and coordination, and socio-cultural and knowledge transfer. There is a need to determine the rankings of challenges considering their criticality concerning practitioners working in agile-based offshore software development. This paper aims to identify and rank agile challenges in offshore software development by applying computational intelligence techniques. From the systematic literature review, we identified 30 communication and coordination challenges. The distributed agile pattern catalog consists of 15 patterns, from which eight were used to solve communication and collaboration challenges. Many researchers have used fuzzy logic to quantify their results. We further applied the fuzzy analytical technique to determine the priority order concerning the criticality of the identified agile pattern catalog. The results showed that Central Code Repository Pattern ranked the most significant for solving communication and coordination challenges. Global Scrum Board Pattern and Synchronous Communication Pattern ranked second.

A model-based approach to large-scale distributed system architecting is suggested, which is based on the use of dynamic digital twins. This approach can be considered as an integration of known paradigms, such as digital twins, evolutionary architecture and agile architecture. It can also be considered as one of the possible realizations of the digital thread paradigm. As part of this approach, a three-level digital thread reference architecture is suggested, which includes the following levels: (i) digital thread support level; (ii) agile architecture support level; (iii) digital shadow support level. This approach has been used in the development of a number of real systems, and has shown its effectiveness in supporting system agility at the exploitation and modernization stages. The proposed approach is focused on building digital twin-based systems. In the emerging agile manufacturing paradigm, there is a great need for a flexible and re-configurable IT platform to form virtual enterprises. In this paper, according to the functional requirements of virtual agile manufacturing, a pragmatic Web-based platform entitled “E-DREAM” has been developed to support the virtual enterprising. Firstly, this paper discusses the E-DREAM basic architecture, infrastructure, and the global object model of E-DREAM. Next, based on the information, information interaction, and role classification, the distributed information management and role management in E-DREAM are interpreted, illustrating that the information access visibility level is dependent on the role that an agile partner plays in a VE (Virtual Enterprise). Making use of CORBA-based method, the implementation of wrapping software resources is conducted, which aims at interoperating the remote software resources. In the end, the E-DREAM prototype implementation is presented. Through the E-DREAM architecture development and prototype system implementation, we have come up with a thorough approach for building agile virtual enterprises, configuring and re-configuring working platforms for different agile partners.

Agile software development is having a profound impact on the software industry. Agent-Based Social Simulation (ABSS) has led a paradigm shift in the way social scientists understand and manipulate complex systems. However, little is known about the relationship between the two and how they can create meaningful synergies. A review of the evidence available on the connection agile-ABSS was conducted. The review investigates what is currently known about agile adoption by ABSS and the value and limitations that can be derived from the connection. The main implication for researchers is the need to implement agile methods in a greater number of ABSS projects, on which to support further research and experimentation. For practitioners, the review raises awareness on the topic and reveals that there is a long road ahead of challenges and opportunities for those willing to unlock value from ABSS. For both, it would be highly beneficial if they joined forces and agreed on a common research agenda.

The paper is devoted to the problem of software and hardware systems acceptance testing according to the Agile Testing methodology. The Agile approach is widely used by software developers, however, developers of software and hardware solutions rarely use this approach, not believing in its effectiveness. The paper assumes that for software and hardware complexes, the practice of continuous integration should be applicable and, as a result, test interaction with hardware at the level ofphysical interfaces performs automatically. The article's authors presented Accepta, a system for automating acceptance testing of software and hardware complexes, explicitly designed for the Agile Testing methodology in the context of continuous integration. The main component of Accepta is an interface block based on the Nucleo-F767ZI debug board manufactured by ST. Test actions that run within the framework of Accepta supplement by expanding the command system of the interface block. The software part, which implements the functions of test describing and execution, is based on the Cucumber framework for automating software systems acceptance testing. The requirements for the object under test and the scenarios for checking the requirements are described in the Gherkin language, which is close to the natural description. The test script steps are described programmatically in the Ruby language. The actual execution of test actions is provided by sending commands through the COM port to the interface unit and analyzing the received responses. As the practice of using Accepta in working projects has shown, this approach allows us to successfully apply the Agile development methodology for software and hardware systems. Due to the automotive interaction with the device under the test interface, high intensity of testing in the development process, including regression, is ensured. The regular testing consequence is fast feedback: as soon as any functionality stops working correctly, developers find out about it fast. At the same time, due to the use of test automation tools, the reproducibility of test action sequences led to the detection of a defect is ensured.

In contemporary Project Management literature and practice, it is possible to distinguish two paradigms: the algorithmic-rational paradigm and the relational paradigm. The algorithmic-rational paradigm is characterized by a sequence of programming methodologies that constitute the classic corpus of knowledge on Project Management (WBS, CPM, PERT, Gantt diagrams). Following the diffusion of Agile methods, dissatisfaction with the algorithmic-rational paradigm has spread and a Visual Planning approach, based on the decentralization of planning and control and the abandonment of algorithmic techniques (such as CPM and Gantt diagrams) in favour of simpler, visual and physical tools, has become increasingly established. Visual Planning is the concrete manifestation of a relational project management paradigm. In this work, through an analysis of the key practices characterizing Visual Planning, we have identified the five fundamental principles that define this approach to project management. Then, to structure and guide the choice of a software application that can support Visual Planning, we have (1) identified several features which allow distinguishing one software from another, and (2) created a correlation matrix between the core principles of Visual Planning and the software features. Through this matrix, it is possible to evaluate and measure the adherence of project management software applications to the logic and practices of physical Visual Planning.

Even if a theory encourages the continuous connection of designers and users throughout the design lifecycle for agile adaptation of requirements to the new experiences of users by intersecting them with various versions of the prototype, the rigid budget and time allocated to the design project require novel approaches to clarify the right vectors of product-evolution from the very early design stages of the project lifecycle—allowing agile approaches to fine-tune the set of requirements. In this context, an analysis process of requirements that uses a constructor inspired by living systems is introduced in this paper. This constructor identifies gaps in requirement formulation and indicates areas where improvements must be undertaken. The method is applied in the case of a new cybersecurity software solution that targets micro and small companies.

Project-based innovation and entrepreneurship curricula encourage learners to approach challenges in an agile, iterative way, allowing for flexibility to respond to new information throughout the research and idea development process. This approach often clashes with traditional ethical approval processes designed for a more predictable set of research methods. This account of practice explores the tensions thus arising and asks how the ethics review process might better support the development of future ethical, responsible innovators? Three key insights related to the importance of balance, language and shared understanding are introduced and presented as part of a pilot project.

The field of cyber-physical systems is a growing IT research area that addresses the deep integration of computing, communication and process control, possibly with humans in the loop. The goal of such area is to define modelling, controlling and programming methodologies for designing and managing complex mechatronics systems, also called industrial agents. Our research topic mainly focuses on the area of data mining and analysis by means of multi-agent orchestration of intelligent sensor nodes using internet protocols, providing also web-based HMI visualizations for data interpretability and analysis. Thanks to the rapid spreading of IoT systems, supported by modern and efficient telecommunication infrastructures and new decentralized control paradigms, the field of service-oriented programming finds new application in wireless sensor networks and microservices paradigm: we adopted such paradigm in the implementation of two different industrial use cases. Indeed, we expect a concrete and deep use of such technologies with 5G spreading. In the article, we describe the common software architectural pattern in IoT applications we used for the distributed smart sensors, providing also design and implementation details. In the use case section, the prototypes developed as proof of concept and the KPIs used for the system validation are described to provide a concrete solution overview.

This article describes how organizations embrace various supply chain strategies aiming at effective and efficient performance outcomes for gaining competitive advantage. The authors conducted an extensive search for academic publications on lean, agile, and leagile (hybrid) supply chains in context with automobile industries, published since year 1990 in reliable repositories such as Google Scholar, Scopus and ResearchGate. None of these papers used bibliometric analysis on the topic. This paper systematically maps, publications on lean, agile, and legal strategies in automobile industry published during 1990–2017. A five-step process is followed, namely (i) defining appropriate search terms, (ii) initial search results, (iii) refinement of search results, (iv) initial data, statistics, and (v) data analysis; adopted for inclusion of relevant documents for publication and citation analysis. Selected documents include primary search term ‘automobile' along with associated secondary terms such as ‘lean', ‘agile', ‘lean and agile', and ‘leagile' as part of the title, abstract, or keywords. The analysis finds several documents on lean or agile strategies, but only one document exists on ‘leagile' paradigm. Maximum articles are contributed on engineering subjects followed by business, management and accounting and computer sciences. Large publication and high citation counts were observed for lean from United States and Chinese authors, whereas Indian authors contributed in agile studies. This article identifies areas of current research interests discussing crucial contributions by several authors' and provides potential directions for further research investigations in the field.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze in a sample of Spanish manufacturing firms the relationship between agile manufacturing and the firm’s management capacities related to innovation and production flexibility. Complementarily the survey addresses the implementation of agile production and its measurement. Design/methodology/approach For data collection, a survey through mail to operations and human resource managers of manufacturing firms and telephonic interviews with managers from 25 selective firms was carried out. The population of the study included firms from the Sistema de Análisis de Balances Ibéricos database with NACE codes 24–32 and at least 200 employees. Quantitative methods (linear hierarchical regression and mean differences) were used to test research hypotheses, and a qualitative method (interview analysis) was used to analyze an implementation and measurement model of agile production. Findings The results of the study show that high-agile firms use more intensively a comprehensive set of agile facilitators (design, manufacturing and supply). They also innovate and cooperate externally more on innovation than low-agile firms. The authors have found that external technological cooperation moderates the firm’s production flexibility. Research limitations/implications The implications of this research indicate, on one hand, that firms interested in implementing agile production should focus on the agility management of supply chains, the skills and knowledge development of human resources and in the implementation of agile manufacturing technologies. On the other hand, firms in less cooperative environments should focus more on their internal manufacturing systems to reinforce the relationship between production flexibility and agility that offers broader scenarios to compete under this production paradigm. The main limitations of the research design are the use of cross-sectional data and the use of managerial perceptions to assess most of the variables. Originality/value This paper offers a model of agile production implementation that it is complemented with measurement indicators to analyze the firm’s evolution toward agility. The combination of multivariate analysis and managers’ interviews to obtain and validate results creates a value for managers interested in agile production.

Abstract: Software Process Models from its inception instill standardization and creates a generic culture of developing software for various IT industries. A great paradigm shift has been observed in terms of embracing Agile Development methodology as a viable development methodology in cross key business units. There is a buffet of agile methodologies comes under the umbrella of ASD, out of which Scrum got the highest popularity and acceptability index. Agile based software development is the need of immediate environment. There is an increasing demand for significant changes to software systems to meet ever-changing user requirements and specifications. As Agile is volatile, so effort estimation is challenging and still striving for perfection to decide size, effort, cost, duration and schedule of projects with minimum error. This cause sensitizes potential researchers all across the globe to start working on addressing the issue of inaccurate predication of efforts. The gap between estimated and actual effort is because of limited or no inclusion of various estimation factors like people and project related factors, inappropriate use of size metric and cost drivers, ignorance of testing effort, team member’s inability to understand user story size and complexity etc. This paper attempts to bridge the gap of estimated and actual effort by the use of soft computing techniques thus taking the research to advance frontier area in terms ofestimation. The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to create a digital world where any information system can expose, discover, understand and consume data and services for analysis, diagnosis, decision support and task automation in various domains such as healthcare, transportation, energy, industry, agriculture, etc. Faced with this diversity of applications and rapid evolution, infrastructures must be able to achieve high levels of security and confidentiality while being open, sustainable, and agile to adapt to the multiple requirements of applications. To meet these needs, new paradigms are emerging. These include the Software Defined Networks (SDN) paradigm, which offers the ability to dynamically program different applications and devices to provide end-to-end service chains. In parallel, the Blockchain paradigm is increasingly used in the Internet of Things, making distributed transactions between connected objects such as financial transactions or "smart contracts" possible. Although the combination of these two paradigms (Blockchain/SDN) is a major issue for the success of the Internet of Things, paving the way for new business models and management/control of communication networks, there is not yet a specified/formalized architecture allowing the use of the "Blockchain" in SDN. In this research, a new architecture for a system combining blockchain and SDN for IoT security is proposed

The elicitation of non-functional and functional needs is one of the most critical jobs of a requirement engineer. This scenario involves the imposition of limits on non-functional needs, whereas functional requirements call for the operation of a system in order to carry out functionality. Over the last few years, agile software development approaches have gained widespread acceptance in the software industry as a problem-solving paradigm. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are frequently cited as a point of contention in non-functional requirements (NFR) approaches. As well as functional requirements like speed and efficiency, security is desired, amongst a host of other things. Aspects like usability, security, and privacy must all be taken into account. Functional needs must be treated as though they were first-class under the current industry standard of practice. Functional requirements are distinguished from non-functional requirements by the fact that only implemented requirements can be evaluated. To give an example, this method attracts the attention of the system's end users to a critical defect in its architecture. Projects of this type frequently fail because to dissatisfaction among the target audience. If you'd like a great demonstration, consider the London Ambulance System. When dealing with non-compliance to the necessary degree of detail, it is feasible to raise the likelihood of software success this is the first study of its kind in its sector to bring attention to the most critical NFR issues. The problems that arise during the elicitation stage of requirement engineering in agile base models. It also outlines the techniques and strategies that are being considered. Proposed in the literature as a means of dealing with these problems.

There is a growing recognition that current manufacturing enterprises must be agile, and the use of virtual enterprise (VE) is becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. It is a very important and difficult activity in forming a virtual enterprise to select appropriate business partners, because each enterprise considers not only pursuing its profit but also sharing the risk to join the virtual enterprise. At first we propose a VE coalition algorithm based on multi-agent paradigm. Then we develop a computer simulation model to evaluate the proposed method by forming a virtual enterprise through multiple negotiations amongst several potential members in the negotiation domain. Finally, we clarify the coalition dynamism with the negotiation process. The effectiveness of the proposed concept in the agile manufacturing is discussed with several simulation experiments.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to contribute to increased understanding of the concept agile and its potential for hospital managers to optimize design of organizational structures and processes to combine internal efficiency and external effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach – An integrative review was conducted using the reSEARCH database. Articles met the following criteria: first, a definition of agility; second, descriptions of enablers of becoming an agile organization; and finally, discussions of agile on multiple organizational levels. In total, 60 articles qualified for the final analysis. Findings – Organizational agility rests on the assumption that the environment is uncertain, ranging from frequently changing to highly unpredictable. Proactive, reactive or embracive coping strategies were described as possible ways to handle such uncertain environments. Five organizational capacities were derived as necessary for hospitals to use the strategies optimally: transparent and transient inter-organizational links; market sensitivity and customer focus; management by support for self-organizing employees; organic structures that are elastic and responsive; flexible human and resource capacity for timely delivery. Agile is portrayed as either the “new paradigm” following lean, the needed development on top of a lean base, or as complementary to lean in distinct hybrid strategies. Practical implications – Environmental uncertainty needs to be matched with coping strategies and organizational capacities to design processes responsive to real needs of health care. This implies that lean and agile can be combined to optimize the design of hospitals, to meet different variations in demand and create good patient management. Originality/value – While considerable value has been paid to strategies to improve the internal efficiency within hospitals, this review raise the attention to the value of strategies of external effectiveness.

The World Robot Summit (WRS) 2020 Assembly Challenge aims to realize the future of industrial robotics by building agile and lean production systems that can (1) respond to ever-changing manufacturing requirements for high-mix low-volume production, (2) be configured easily without paying a high cost for system integration, (3) be reconfigured in an agile and lean manner, and (4) be implemented as agile one-off manufacturing for the industry. One of the technical challenges of assembly is the detection, identification, and classification of a small object in an unstructured environment to grasp, manipulate, and insert it into the mating part to assemble the mechanical system. We presented an end-to-end system solution based on flexibility, modularity, and robustness with integrated machine vision and robust planning and execution. To achieve this, we utilized the behavior tree paradigm and a hierarchy of recovery strategies to ensure effective operation. We selected the behavior tree approach because of its design efficiency in creating complex systems that are modular, hierarchical, and reactive, and offer graphical representations with semantic meaning. These properties are essential for any part assembly task. Our system was selected for the WRS 2020 Assembly Challenge finals based on its successful performance in qualifying rounds.

Also, since the high acceptance of agile approaches, we claim new well-structured and balanced agility-rigor methodologies are required. Then, this paper proposes a new SOCA Development Systems Engineering Methodology, including its description, the explanation of its theoretical foundations and the illustration of its use with a prototype of a running example. Two pilot empirical evaluations on usability metrics are also reported. Findings support both theoretical adequacy and positive perceptions from the evaluators.
