Pełny tekst źródłaHunting has had a prominent place in the relations between Europe and the African continent, from the expeditions of the end of the 18th century through to contemporary hunting tourism. The word safari alone, which refers to the formalisation within a codified activity of these hunting trips, evokes a fairly romantic image of wild Africa. Using data from an ethnography in the hunting areas of north Benin, and with the analysis of various textual and iconographic documents, it is worth questioning the meaning that hunters of yesterday and today give to the their infatuation for safari hunting. Historically linked to colonialism, safari hunting can be interpreted as a kind of symbolical appropriation, in the shape of the hunting trophy, of a continent reduced to its wildness. This kind of conquest, however, in spite of its apparent ease, calls for a contextualisation to actualise the representations of the wild; even in its commercial version, a safari cannot be reduced to acquiring a paid-for trophy. Hunters furthermore link their activities to a legitimising discourse revolving around the ethics of hunting, a discourse which, nowadays, borrows from humanitarian or ecological discourses. Even though, on the one hand, hunting tourism is relatively marginal and controversial in the contemporary western world, the representations that go with it and the fantasy of a wilderness to be conquered – embodied by the African continent – are, on the other hand, particularly widespread

Pełny tekst źródłaIntroduction and objectives: Rugby union ('rugby') is a popular sport that has a high risk of injury. The sport has particular popularity in South Africa with about 500,000 players. Based on concerns about the number of rugby-related catastrophic injuries, the BokSmart nationwide injury prevention programme was launched in July 2009 by South African Rugby Union (SARU). This programme educates coaches and referees on safe techniques during a Rugby Safety Workshop (RSW). To assess real-world injury prevention efforts, researchers have suggested using the six Translating Research into Injury Prevention Practice (TRIPP) stages. Stage 1 and 2 investigate the incidence, severity and aetiology of injuries. Stage 2 investigates the aetiology of injuries. Stage 3 is the introduction of an intervention. Stage 4 is an investigation of the effectiveness of the intervention under ideal conditions. Stages 5 and 6 investigate the real-world implementation of the intervention. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to comprehensively evaluate the BokSmart programme using the TRIPP framework. Methods: TRIPP stages 1 and 2 are investigated in Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. Chapter 2 investigates the incidence, severity and aetiology of injuries at four competitive youth tournaments. Chapter 3 used Chapter 2's data to investigate the economic burden of these injuries. Chapter 4 investigates the incidence and severity of catastrophic injuries. Chapter 5 investigates the risk of both general and catastrophic injury specific to the scrum phase of play using the data from Chapters 2 and 4. TRIPP stages 3 and 4 were conducted by SARU and are thus outside the scope of this thesis. TRIPP stages 5 and 6 are investigated in Chapters 6, 7 and 8. Chapter 6 evaluates the effect of BokSmart in on catastrophic injury rates. Chapter 7 evaluates the effect of BokSmart on targeted player behaviours. Chapter 8 uses qualitative methods to investigate coaches and referees' perceptions of BokSmart. Results: Through TRIPP Stages 1 and 2 it was established that South Africa has comparable general and catastrophic injury rates to other countries. Senior players were at significantly (p<0.05) greater risk of suffering a catastrophic injury than younger players. The economic investigation indicated that injury rehabilitation was affected by whether the player had medical insurance or not – this may be unique to South Africa. Through TRIPP stages 5 and 6 BokSmart was associated with a reduction in catastrophic injuries in junior, but not senior players. BokSmart was also associated with a significant improvement in targeted player behaviours. Coaches' perceptions of the programme varied by socioeconomic status (SES). All coaches and referees agreed that the programme was capable of reducing catastrophic injuries in players. However, high SES coaches described difficulties in changing coach and player behaviour, while low SES coaches mentioned their lack of necessary infrastructure as barriers to adoption. There was also negativity about the delivery of BokSmart: coaches and referees felt the course was not practical enough, was too long and should not be compulsory. Conclusions: From BokSmart's perspective, the lack of effectiveness of the programme in senior players should be of concern, considering this age group's greater risk of catastrophic injury. This greater effect in juniors could be explained either by the higher number of players, or greater adoption in this age group. Future research should attempt to elucidate this reason. The barriers and suggestions described by low and high SES coaches and referees should be addressed to optimise the programme's impact. The programme should continue to be evaluated to assess the impact of these suggestions.

Pełny tekst źródłaENGLISH ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to measure the level of HIV and Aids knowledge, attitudes and safer sex practices among student men who have sex with men (MSM) at a higher education institution in the Western Cape. The study served to recommend guidelines for effective and enhanced targeted intervention response for MSM student community. A total of 36 MSM students aged between 19 and 36 (of which most were South African, black and Xhosa speaking) were recruited to take part in the study. Selection was done via snowball sampling. Respondents completed questionnaires upon consenting to participate in the study. The study found moderately high levels of basic HIV knowledge among the sampled MSM population. There were, however, lower levels of knowledge reported regarding the associated risk and effective prevention strategies of anal sex when compared to similar information about vaginal sex and oral sex. Findings also show that participants had very positive attitudes towards HIV testing, condom use and a non-discriminating environment. Respondents lacked confidence in both management and student leadership with regards to their responsibility in mitigating homophobia/discrimination against MSM student population. Furthermore, a high number of respondents reported having sex with men and women as well as multiple sexual partnerships. Self-reported alcohol and drug use were found to be very low, with the majority of participants indicating non-use. Participants stated little challenges accessing health care services. However, respondents felt MSM specific information about health care related rights and needs were lacking. Recommendations from this study include current HIV and Aids policy reform, mainstreaming MSM-friendly health care services, introducing combination HIV prevention programmes such as Mpowerment and addressing the human rights needs of MSM.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis explores the notions of safety and the usage of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design methods for creating safer spaces within cities. The project examines the inner city of Durban specifically, grappling with the issues of crime and grime and the perceptions of the city as a space of vulnerability. The project examines the historical and current context of Durban with regards to perceptions held about the inner city. The Project then delves into the links between crime and the city and examines the extremities of crime within South Africa and Durban. It then turns to a study of crime and place theories which attempt to explain the connections between the offender, the targets and the location in which crimes take place. Particular attention is paid to possible implications for urban form. The thesis also investigates various ways in which Durban’s landowners, developers and residents have attempted to create islands of safety throughout the city, after which international and local examples of urban crime prevention are discussed. From these theories and case studies, a few principles are highlighted as guidelines for producing safer spaces. An exploration of design strategies follows. The city is analysed according to a set of elements of the city or a layering of the city on the scale of the Central Business District. This is then taken into a proposal for development. A precinct scale analysis investigates the finer details of Pickering precinct, an area notorious for criminal activity. Such detailed explorations of the built fabric are not possible at the scale of the city, but have an impact on smaller urban acupuncture proposals on a street segment scale. A number of routes that run through the precinct are then explored in terms of potential adjustments to the built fabric, in order to support pedestrian activity and safety along the routes. This project illustrates an alternative approach to creating safe spaces within the urban environment of Durban. Through providing a safe urban core, the city can allow for positive interactions to take place within common spaces and hence fulfil the role that cities have to play in fostering growth in society.

Pełny tekst źródłaThe calculation of reactor-specific fission Q-values is important for the safety analyses of nuclear reactors. The recoverable energy from the fission Q-value is used to normalise reactor quantities to the total power of the reactor. In this work, a detailed recoverable energy from fission Q-value and spatial heat deposition calculations are presented for the SAFARI-1 nuclear reactor. The fission Q-value is composed of the energy released in a fission event by fission products, neutrons, prompt and delayed gamma rays, beta particles and neutrinos. The energy released by neutrinos is not recoverable; however, part of it is recovered by the gamma and beta radiation from the decay of activated materials. We present two methods to calculate the recoverable energy released per fission. The first one uses the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP5) code. MCNP is a probabilistic transport code that has the capability of calculating most of the heating contributions due to particle interactions with matter. The second method uses the Evaluated Nuclear Data File, ENDF/B-VII and ENDF/B-VII.1 data libraries. The ENDF data libraries contains the information required to calculate all the fission Q-value components, excepttheenergyreleasedfromradiativecapture, sincethisquantity depends on the reactor materials. To calculate this, we use the radiative capture reaction rate in MCNP5 and the binding energy of the product of the activation. We obtained a final Q-value of 200.8±0.6 MeV/fission for SAFARI-1. Using the fission Q-value result, we obtained the spatial heat distribution for SAFARI-1 by ii calculating the heating rates of the Q-value components. It was established that 97% of the heat produced is deposited in the fuel and 3% is deposited in the surrounding region of the reactor.

Pełny tekst źródłaThrough a case study of the relationship between the rural Makuleke community and the regional tourism operator Wilderness Safaris, this thesis examines the impact of tourism partnerships on community development in post-‐ apartheid South Africa. The study considers the tourism component of the ‘Makuleke model’, a concept used frequently in academic and popular literature to refer to the community’s landmark land restitution case involving the Kruger National Park (KNP). Thirty years after experiencing a forced removal by the apartheid regime, the Makuleke community in 1998 was able to regain their lost land (the Pafuri area of Kruger National Park) and benefit from it through conservation and tourism. The Makuleke have partnered with three tourism operators, their main concessionaire being Wilderness Safaris. Their contractual agreement obliges the tourism company to pay lease fees to the Makuleke Communal Property Association (CPA) and to employ Makuleke residents. To further community development, Wilderness Safaris established a joint venture with the Makuleke CPA, and also runs an environmental education programme for children. Evidence for this thesis was collected over a two and a half year period (from May 2007 to December 2009) using three methodological approaches: archival research, participant observation and semi-‐structured, open-‐ended interviews. In analysing the Makuleke CPA-‐Wilderness Safaris partnership, findings reveal that ten years after the land claim, the commended ‘Makuleke model’ is neither as conceptually coherent nor as practically successful as is commonly supposed. I argue that although the model denotes success, a closer scrutiny of its foundations, assumptions and context expose inherent forces and practices that hinder its long-‐ term effective implementation. Influenced by post-‐development theory, I question perceptions of equality in benefit distribution, critique the juxtaposition of traditional with modern values, and examine contestations over power within the Makuleke community. I demonstrate how these features undermine the potential for the genuine transformation and broad-‐based social upliftment that tourism-‐led development purposes to achieve at Makuleke. My research findings confirm post-‐development theoretical propositions that criticise the contradictions in orthodox development procedures and call for a rethinking of the premises upon which approaches to community upliftment through tourism are generally founded.

Pheiffer, Debra Claire. "An analysis of the role of the South African Police Service and the local government in crime prevention". Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13539.
Pełny tekst źródłaCrime is unwanted in any society because it brings about fear, anger and hatred. As people living in a world of constant change, we tend to strive for innovation which this research endeavours. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and all relevant role-players become partners in the fight against not only crime, but also community problems that threaten the well-being of inhabitants. Local Government is attempting to develop communities in municipal areas and SAPS primary function is to reduce crime. If crime is one of the main obstacles in improving the quality of life, then surely government authorities must take responsibility for local safety, and who better than these two key organisations taking the lead. This study investigates the roles of SAPS and Local Government in crime prevention in the Cape Winelands District Municipality; also whether their co-operation brings about fruitful results and what interventions are actively in place. It further explores whether their integrated approach has an impact on the safety and security of local communities. Lastly, it determines whether their collaboration is effective or not; and what additional improvements can be implemented, seeking new insights for future reference. Three hundred (300) questionnaires were distributed to senior management members of the SAPS and Local Government, as well as other relative stakeholders who contribute to increasing safety. Crime reduction influences all spheres of society, for example our economy, businesses, tourism etc. Reducing crime and building safer communities must be a priority for all South Africans. To achieve this, crime prevention programmes should be initiated at community level, since crime prevention involves responding to a few priority problems, using multi-agency approaches. Government legislation and policies urge both organisations to take the lead in implementing crime prevention projects which this study discovered. This analysis is not to re-invent the wheel but to find effective ways in strengthening partnership which leads to new knowledge in the field of crime prevention at local level. One of the basic needs of any community is the need for safety and security and this study aims to assist and contribute to increase safety using an integrated approach.
