Streszczenie:
The human experience of art is unique, being associated with exceptional and transcendent states of consciousness. These experiences are formed based on the interaction between the work of art itself, the observer, and the context. Using the multilevel modelling with crossed random effects analysis, we explored the connection between the affective and cognitive appraisals of a visual work of art and the aesthetic judgment. Two experiments were performed. In the first, lay persons appraised figural paintings with pleasant and unpleasant content. In the second experiment, abstract and realistic paintings were appraised. The results indicate a strong connection between affective appraisal and the aesthetic judgment, especially with the assessment of beauty. Cognitive appraisals are less closely connected to aesthetic appraisals. These results suggest that naive observers use everyday, practical perception when evaluating works of art, and that paintings which evoke "sweet", pleasant, hedonic emotions will be assessed as more aesthetically pleasing. The deviation of a painting from traditional art canons further strengthens the reliance on everyday perception in lay persons. The implications of these results are discussed.

Streszczenie:
This essay examines a little-known but important installation entitled Insure the Life of an Ant, conceived by artist Mike Malloy and displayed at the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York in April of 1972. This provocative and idiosyncratic piece confronted gallery-goers, who became viewer–participants, with the option of killing or saving a live ant displayed like a sculpture on a pedestal, either by pushing a button or not. The artist made the piece, which can function almost like a psychology experiment, to engender a “moral dilemma”. I explore the particular role of affect in a participatory art installation, distinct from response to inanimate art. I investigate the roles of emotion and reason in dealing with the work; whether ratiocination can be considered an “anti-affect”; and how the tension between competing thoughts and feelings helped create a psychological drama. The essay looks at how an art space can operate as a zone of moral exceptionalism to encourage questionable actions. It also locates the piece in relation to the emergence of a more behaviorist art in the early 1970s, as discussed by critic Gregory Battcock, and the larger notion of postmodernism. Other contexts investigated include art and animal rights and issues of sentience and speciesism; social and military violence, including capital punishment and the Vietnam War; the 1961 Milgram experiment; Hannah Arendt’s concept of the “banality of evil” as a Nazi war criminal defense; and other works of art involving maltreatment or violence toward both human and non-human animals, including those by Marina Abramović, Marco Evaristti, and Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz.

Art is a promising pathway to raise emotional engagement with nature, while enabling an indirect exposure to nature through aesthetic experience. However, the precise relationships between aesthetic experiences of art and experiences of nature remain unclear. The aim of this observational study is to highlight the effect of nature experiences on the aesthetic reception art, based on Early Modern paintings (16th-18th century). By focusing on marine ecosystems, that are difficult to directly interact with, the results presented are intended to explore whether marine activities and fish consumption affect the aesthetic reception of artworks depicting marine biodiversity. A photo-questionnaire survey based on four paintings has been conducted with 332 French participants with a diverse range of marine practices, fish consumption and artistic sensitivity. Fish consumption and value attributed to fish as food had a significant positive impact on the aesthetic reception, suggesting that taste and food consumption could be considered as a relevant nature aesthetic experience that elicits affective and emotional responses. Results also showed an indirect effect of fishing and diving on the aesthetic reception of paintings whose iconography relates with the observers’ experiences. These findings are of particular interest in both environmental psychology and ecological mediation through art. This study brings evidences of the connection between art and nature experiences, and that art could be an innovative way of experiencing nature. Finally, this study also highlights the need to broaden the scope of nature experiences, for instance by including food.

Within the fields of aesthetics and psychology, there is a long tradition of arguing that affect precedes cognition. A verbalized thought following upon a feeling and associated with it does not translate the feeling precisely or adequately. In fact, as C. S. Peirce would argue, the thought itself projects its own affect, which is independent of its logic. The essence of affect or feeling will always elude linguistic capture. This essay argues that experiences of belief and doubt are affective sensations, and both can be graphed on a scale of sensuous intuition or cognitive guessing (which, again, projects affect). The failure of language to grasp what we refer to as instances of emotion, feeling, sensation, affect, belief, doubt, and the like is more of an intractable problem for philosophical aesthetics than it is for the aesthetics of the art experience. Examples of the art of Cy Twombly, Barnett Newman, Donald Judd, Bridget Riley, and Katharina Grosse are invoked to argue through the gap between thought and feeling.

A positive experience in response to a piece of music or a work of art (hence ‘music/art’) has been linked to health and wellbeing outcomes but can often be reported as indescribable (ineffable), creating challenges for research. What do these positive experiences feel like, beyond ‘positive’? How are loved works that evoke profoundly negative emotions explained? To address these questions, two simultaneously occurring classes of experience are proposed: the ‘emotion class’ of experience (ECE) and the positive ‘affect class’ of experience (PACE). ECE consists of conventional, discrete, and communicable emotions with a reasonably well-established lexicon. PACE relates to a more private world of prototypical aesthetic emotions and experiences investigated in positive psychology. After a review of the literature, this paper proposes that PACE consists of physical correlates (tears, racing heart…) and varied amounts of ‘hedonic tone’ (HT), which range from shallow, personal leanings (preference, liking, attraction, etc.) to deep ones that include awe, being-moved, thrills, and wonder. PACE is a separate, simultaneously activated class of experience to ECE. The approach resolves long-standing debates about powerful, positive experiences taking place during negative emotion evocation by music/art. A list of possible terms for describing PACE is proposed.

BackgroundAnxiety is a common mental health problem, especially among college students. Anxiety disorders seriously affect college students’ learning and quality of life and may lead to other mental health problems.Subjects and MethodsEducational psychology is integrated into the music appreciation course of public art education in colleges and universities, and an effective psychological intervention method is sought to optimize the psychological condition of students with anxiety disorders. In the experiment, 50 college students with anxiety disorders were studied, and 25 were treated for three months with art and music appreciation courses integrated with educational psychology. The other 25, as a control group, were treated for three months with a traditional art and music appreciation course.ResultsThe anxiety item of the Stanford Acute Stress Response Questionnaire (SASRQ) was used to evaluate the mental health status of the two groups of college students. The higher the score, the more serious the anxiety. The experimental results showed that the pressure of college students in the experimental group was significantly reduced, and their emotions tended to be stable, with a comprehensive score of 11. Some students in the control group still had anxious and impatient behavior, and the total score was 19 points.ConclusionsThe music course of public art education integrated with educational psychology can promote the mental health of college students and relieve anxiety. At the same time, this study provides a new perspective and reference for academic research and practice in educational psychology in universities.

Art and artistic trade are not purposeful and accidental. They are closely related to life. The art itself makes the emotional and negative feelings like happiness and sorrow unheard of by its form of chemistry. The article analyzes modern theatre practices through the concepts developed by Vygotsky’s school of thought. One of the fundamental features of these practices is working with consciousness, which enables an individual to master his/her own behaviour. The central point of these artful theatre practices is the experience of catharsis that becomes real as two affects meet. Theatre practices are compared with educational practices and collective problem-solving practices, in which the same phenomenon of meeting of affects takes place. The article argues that the orientation system of action is neither symmetrical nor parallel to the affective-motivational system of action. Reorganisation and transformation of emotional experience into affect and action implies the following: the ability to represent emotional experiences as idealized objective states of mind and to be susceptible to their language; the ability to observe emotional experiences from the outside using reflection; the ability to re-establish oneself as the actor by recollecting one’s self in the act of doing.

AbstractBackgroundThe hippocampus plays an important role in psychopathology and treatment outcome. While posterior hippocampus (PH) may be crucial for the learning process that exposure-based treatments require, affect-focused treatments might preferentially engage anterior hippocampus (AH). Previous studies have distinguished the different functions of these hippocampal sub-regions in memory, learning, and emotional processes, but not in treatment outcome. Examining two independent clinical trials, we hypothesized that anterior hippocampal volume would predict outcome of affect-focused treatment outcome [Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT); Panic-Focused Psychodynamic Psychotherapy (PFPP)], whereas posterior hippocampal volume would predict exposure-based treatment outcome [Prolonged Exposure (PE); Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT); Applied Relaxation Training (ART)].MethodsThirty-five patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and 24 with panic disorder (PD) underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before randomization to affect-focused (IPT for PTSD; PFPP for PD) or exposure-based treatments (PE for PTSD; CBT or ART for PD). AH and PH volume were regressed with clinical outcome changes.ResultsBaseline whole hippocampal volume did not predict post-treatment clinical severity scores in any treatment. For affect-focused treatments, but not exposure-based treatments, anterior hippocampal volume predicted clinical improvement. Smaller AH correlated with greater affect-focused treatment improvement. Posterior hippocampal volume did not predict treatment outcome.ConclusionsThis is the first study to explore associations between hippocampal volume sub-regions and treatment outcome in PTSD and PD. Convergent results suggest that affect-focused treatment may influence the clinical outcome through the ‘limbic’ AH, whereas exposure-based treatments do not. These preliminary, theory-congruent, therapeutic findings require replication in a larger clinical trial.

Research on the role of affect in the entrepreneurial process has surged over time, resulting in a vibrant field of inquiry. To advance scholarship in this area, we conduct an inductive analysis of 162 published articles, critically analyzing the state of research on affect in entrepreneurship. We develop an organizing framework to capture three major conversations in existing research—affect valence (feelings), discrete emotions, and emotional competencies—and encompass several outcomes studied within each conversation. We find that limited work has been done to explore the antecedents of affect (both feelings and discrete emotions), anticipated affect deserves greater consideration, and affective influence of stakeholders on entrepreneurs remains overlooked. Research on negative affect and emotional competencies also remains scarce in the entrepreneurship literature. Future inquiry would do well to take a multilevel approach to affect, explore affective phenomena over time, and cast light on the role of emotional competencies in the entrepreneurial process. We also spotlight crucial empirical advancements, including big data and artificial intelligence, for affect research going forward.

We live in contentious times. Why are people prepared to sacrifice wealth, a pleasant and carefree life, or sometimes even their lives for a common cause? This question brings us to the individual level of analysis, and therefore to political psychology. People live in a perceived world. Indeed, this is what a political psychology of protest is about – trying to understand why people who are seemingly in the same socio-political configuration respond so differently. I will illustrate this point with an overview of state-of-the-art theoretical approaches and up-to-date empirical evidence. Discussed are grievances, efficacy/cynicism, identification, emotions, and social embeddedness. Most recent approaches combine these concepts into one model comprising two routes: An efficacy route steered by social embeddedness and a grievances route steered by cynicism. The working of the model is illustrated by empirical evidence from contemporary events such as migrants, collective action, demonstrating diasporas, and Social Media protests. Each of these illustrations exemplifies how different aspects of the socio-political context as dual identification, group status, and virtual embeddedness affect individuals’ protest behavior. As such the paper aims to provide an overview of political psychological work that may contribute to the understanding of our contentious times.

What are the consequences of lay beliefs about how things are made? In this article, we describe a Western folk theory of artifact creation, highlighting how intuitive dualism regarding mental and physical labor (i.e., folk psychology) can lead to the perceived transmission of properties from makers to material artifacts (i.e., folk physics), and affect people’s interactions with material artifacts. We show how this folk theory structures the conceptual domain of material artifacts by differentiating the contemporary lay concepts of art/craft and industrial production, and how it influences people’s evaluations of different types of artifacts and their makers. We propose that the folk theory and lay concepts of art/craft and industrial production are best understood within a specific sociohistorical context, and review potential sources of cross-cultural and cross-temporal variation. We conclude by making recommendations for future research and examining the implications for promoting environmental sustainability and social justice in production systems.

This article presents a research-based case study on the Art Therapy Large Group on a MA training in Art Psychotherapy, a group that has a similar role to the large group in a therapeutic community. The group situates itself between a large verbal group, an art therapy group and performance art. Photographs, taken as part of the research by staff and students during four consecutive sessions of the group, are presented and related to: a written narrative of the group, to a staff recorded discussion and to notes from a student focus group. The method is an iterative process, moving between the verbal and visual that parallels the process of the group itself. The group revolves around responses to the camera, telling a story of power, gender and desire. The findings are three-fold: firstly, that art making and performance are thinking process in themselves and containing of affect; secondly, questions are raised about the nature of dialogue in group analytically based large groups which is here extended to include the material and the physical; lastly, dominant thinking on educational methods is questioned.

Background: Recently, workers employed in vaccination points around the world have been subjected to very high workloads to counter the progress of the COVID-19 epidemic. This workload has a negative effect on their well-being. Environmental psychology studies have shown how the physical characteristics of the workplace environment can influence employees’ well-being. Furthermore, studies in the psychology of art show how art can improve the health of individuals. Objectives: The aim of this research was to test a moderated mediation model to verify how appreciation of workplace aesthetics can impact the level of exhaustion of staff working in a vaccination center, the mediating role of positive and negative affects, and the moderating role of interest in art. Methods: Data were collected from a sample of 274 workers (physicians, nurses, reception, and administrative staff) working in the same vaccination center in Italy. Participants answered a self-report questionnaire during a rest break. We used a cross-sectional design. Results: The results show that appreciation of workplace aesthetics impacts employees’ level of exhaustion. This relationship is mediated by positive and negative affects, and interest in art moderates the relationship between positive affects and exhaustion. Conclusions: These findings indicate the central role of workplace aesthetics in influencing healthcare workers’ well-being, and how interest in art can reduce exhaustion levels. Practical implications of the results are discussed.

Many artworks defy determinacy of meaning by inducing a variety of potential meanings. We aim to describe different kinds of such semantic instability (which we call ‘SeIns’) by comparing related concepts as well as specific phenomena in order to arrive at concise definitions. These analyses will be positioned in the framework of Predictive Coding. Furthermore, this article fathoms the specifics of semantic instability in art and presents a psycho-aesthetic account on the appeal of semantic instability in art. We propose that one factor for the appeal of semantic instability might be that it offers the opportunity of rewarding insight. Furthermore, we suggest that positive affect can be gained not only by arriving at an insight but also by anticipating it — a crucial point with regard to those kinds of semantic instability that are not ‘resolvable’ into semantic stability. Current challenges within this field of research include the necessity of an empirical approach to classes of semantic instability, the lack of a specification of psycho-aesthetic theories on the appeal of each class, as well as the need for an integration of context- and person-related facets of the experience of art.

The paper reviews and analyzes approaches to the formation of project teams. The disadvantages, probability and feasibility of applying each approach to the implementation of art projects are identified. Approaches to team building and parameters for determining well-coordinated teamwork that directly affect its effectiveness are considered and analyzed. Arguments are presented for the expediency of involving a psychology specialist both for the organization as a whole and for the project team during the implementation of a specific project. Arguments are presented for the expediency of involving a mediator in projects of any field and, especially, in art projects. The roles and tasks of psychology and mediation specialists in managing art project teams are clarified in order to analyze the functional similarities and differences in their work. On the basis of this analysis, a matrix of distribution of functions is formed, which determines which of the most common situations in the work on an art project are within the competence of a psychologist, and which require the intervention of a mediator. This analysis proves the need to involve a professional mediation specialist in the implementation of art projects, along with a psychologist, for a more effective outcome in resolving conflicts and disputes, including the settlement of conflicts of interest arising in the process of negotiating and concluding agreements and contracts. This matrix can be used not only for art projects, but also as a useful tool for a project manager in the distribution of functions when engaging a mediator in projects of any kind. Two ways of involving a mediator in an art project are considered: as a full-time employee of the organization and inviting an external specialist to work on a specific project. The advantages and disadvantages of each of them are analyzed. The result of the analysis shows that it is impossible to unambiguously determine the optimal method for all art projects. Based on the priorities of the art project customer and an assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of each method, the project manager chooses the method of involving a mediator in each art project separately.

Among these aspects of animation that have to be taken into consideration heavily by animators, is frame rates, or more commonly known and abbreviated as FPS (frames per seconds). The definition of frame rate is basically the amount of frames or images that are playing within one second exactly in a time-based work. There are several variations of frame rates that are used by different styles of animation, whether it is traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, fully computer-generated 3D animation, stop motion and even hybrids of these different methods. One such example of an animated work in recent years that has pioneered the usage of different frame rates in their production is the animated feature film by Sony Animation, Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse, and its sequel which was newly released in theatres, Across the Spider-Verse, among other examples as well, but for this film in particular, the usage of different frame rates was intentional. In this article, how different frame rates are utilized in different forms of animation are studied by analyzing different existing examples that have been published for the general audience in movie theatres, online streaming and television, as well as exploring the function of different frame rates and the effect that they have towards the audience’s psychology as well as in the context of storytelling when it comes to presenting their characters’ personality and background.

Background Schizophrenia, as a disabling mental disorder, is often characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and confusion. Once schizophrenia occurs, patients will form a physiological and psychological burden, which will affect their normal lives. Although traditional drug therapy is effective, there are also some cases of high recurrence rates. Therefore, research has integrated aesthetic psychological theory into art education and combined it with risperidone to intervene and treat schizophrenia patients.Subjects and Methods 80 patients with schizophrenia from a certain hospital from 2021 to 2022 were selected as the research subjects and were evenly divided into Group A and Group B based on different treatment methods. Group A was treated with traditional drugs, while Group B was treated with combination therapy. The clinical symptoms were quantified using the Concise Psychiatric Scale and analyzed using SPSS21.0 software after the experiment.ResultsAfter 6 weeks of treatment, the anxiety and depression scores of Group B were 4.01 ± 1.82, the thinking disorder scores were 6.02 ± 2.41, and the vitality scores were 4.18 ± 0.98, which were lower than before the experiment. At this time, the scores of Group A were 5.96 ± 1.78, 7.42 ± 2.35, and 5.64 ± 1.21, respectively, significantly higher than those of Group B.ConclusionsThe method of combining art education with risperidone, which integrates aesthetic psychological theory, has effective intervention and treatment effects on patients with schizophrenia.

Limiting aesthetics to rather rare experiences unnecessarily narrows the scope of a science of art.

Abstract Objective People with HIV (PWH) are more likely to experience problematic emotions and are at increased risk for frailty. In the general population, frailty is broadly associated with worse social–emotional functioning. However, the extent of this dysfunction has largely been isolated to depression and these relationships have yet to be examined among PWH. Thus, this study examined associations between frailty and summary factor scores developed from the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Emotion Battery (NIH-TB-EB) among PWH. Method Participants were 320 PWH (mean age = 52.3, SD = 12.7). Three previously validated composite scores from the NIH-TB-EB were used to assess social–emotional functioning: negative affect, social satisfaction, and psychological well-being. Using the Fried Phenotype, the sample was dichotomized into non-frail (n = 155) and prefrail/frail (n = 165) groups. Multiple regression was used to examine the association between frailty and social–emotional functioning. Covariates included age, estimated duration of HIV infection, antiretroviral therapy (ART) status, and antidepressant medication count. Results Being prefrail/frail was associated with increased negative affect (B = 0.26, p < 0.001), decreased social satisfaction (B = -0.18, p = 0.002), and decreased psychological well-being (B = -0.25, p < 0.001). Increased age was associated with decreased negative affect (B = -0.17, p = 0.002), and was unrelated to social satisfaction and psychological well-being. Estimated duration of infection, ART status, and antidepressant use were not associated with social–emotional functioning. Conclusions Pre-frail/frail PWH have worse social–emotional functioning, above and beyond age, duration of HIV disease, ART status, and antidepressant use. This suggests both frailty and poor social–emotional functioning may be important targets to screen and treat in order to improve prognosis and quality of life for PWH.

Abstract. Openness and intellect may differentially predict engagement for two possible reasons. First, engagement with sensory experiences is associated with openness, whereas engagement with abstract information is associated with intellect – a distinction based on content. Second, openness reflects affective, and intellect cognitive processing – a distinction based on affect. These two positions are contrasted through associations of both openness and intellect with interest in a broad range of stimuli. Participants (N = 191) viewed images of visual art, philosophical quotations, and scientific discoveries and rated them on interest, appraised novelty and understanding. Only openness predicted greater interest in all stimuli types. Appraised understanding mediated the openness-interest relationship for visual art and philosophy, while intellect was associated with greater appraised understanding of science and philosophy. Openness was associated with weaker understanding-interest relationships for visual art, and greater reactivity to novelty for science and philosophy. We conclude that one way to think of the engagement distinction between openness and intellect is in terms of emotional versus cognitive engagement. That is, the aspects reflect engagement in different ways rather than in different things.

Islamic banking did not develop quickly enough to rival the conventional banking sector, particularly in Pakistan. Due to the industry's explosive growth, there was competition among Islamic banks to advertise their products and services. It was instructed that the advertisement should include Islamic principles and values because it's a banking service founded on Islamic principles. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to define the guidelines for Islamic banking sector marketing. The second goal of this study is to explore, clarify, and impart to the audience the significance of colour in Islamic banking advertisements. As with other forms of art, religion relies heavily on colour to express its ideals. And in order to do this, the advertisement designer makes an effort to avoid using dissimilar and jarring hues that deprive the human soul of comfort and calm. This article discusses the visuals used in Islamic banking advertisements in terms of marketing, calls attention to contradictions and disputes surrounding colour psychology, and looks at how colours affect advertising. According to the research's findings, banking advertisements can utilise colour to influence a variety of behaviours, including mood and perception of attractions.

We examine three basic tropes—villain, victim, and hero—that emerge in images, claims, and narratives. We compare recent research on characters with the predictions of an established tradition, affect control theory (ACT). Combined, the theories describe core traits of the villain-victim-hero triad and predict audiences’ reactions. Character theory (CT) can help us understand the cultural roots of evaluation, potency, and activity profiles and the robustness of profile ratings. It also provides nuanced information regarding multiplicity in, and subtypes of, characters and how characters work together to define roles. Character types can be strategically deployed in political realms, potentially guiding strategies, goals, and group dynamics. ACT predictions hold up well, but CT suggests several paths for extension and elaboration. In many cases, cultural research and social psychology work on parallel tracks, with little cross-talk. They have much to learn from each other.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the restoration process of juveniles who are serving their sentences at Kavaja Minors Institution, through the therapy of literature and art. In order to understand the process, it is essential to answer the following questions: does art therapy have a transformative effect on the psychology of adolescents who have problems with the law? If so, how and to what extent does it affect and by what means do we measure the result? Methods that were used in order to process the data were the empirical, analytical, comparative and descriptive ones. The data were registered before and after sixteen therapeutic sessions that were essentially related to reading literature and dealing with other arts. If art therapy is utilized through a structured program to ensure informal education (ie, discovering oneself and others by creating and practicing process), it may help to improve adolescents' behaviors. Juveniles that are in re-education institutions may even ameliorate their psychological conditions if they are engaged to literature and art therapy. Art in itself deals with the personal dimension and consequently the interpersonal one, giving minors the opportunity to self-heal and later to self-regulate. The findings of this case study justify the importance of art therapeutic sessions in transforming and improving behaviors, learning and commitment to the creative process. This therapy was difficult to implement during the closure of institutions due to COVID-19. As a result, some of the therapeutic sessions were performed virtually and indirectly. Literature and art therapy improves young people emotionally, mentally and promotes their artistic skills. Their creativity and artistic performance (poetry, essays, debate, drama, role-play, dance and singing) remain an important proof of this restoration process. The perspective of art education is discussed in the context of Gestalt perception theory, and its necessity is emphasized. Undeniably, the Gestalt principle of perceptual organization and the concepts of perceptual illusion play an active role in forming motor skills and representing different points of view by activating perceptual processes such as creative and multidimensional thinking in art. Gestalt theory occupies an essential place in educational research. The Gestalt theory of perception supports holistic learning. In this sense, the goals to be achieved in art education are also crucial for the student. In visual perception, the cognitive orientation of the individual towards stimuli may vary from person to person. Approaching the same inspiration from a different angle can lead to misinterpretations of the trigger and affect learning. Although the reflections of Gestalt theory influence this view, it is considered the acceptance on which cognitive approaches are based. The basic understanding of thinking that underlies Gestalt learning theory accepts this fact and supports this fact with its underlying features. Cognitive thinking activities and perceptual orientations have an indirect effect on Gestalt theory. At the same time, the Gestalt theory and the resulting psycho-perceptual intuition have been evaluated and applied by many scientists and thinkers. Developed and presented theoretically by Max Wertheimer, Kurt Kofka, and Wolfgang Köhler, Gestalt theory led to the emergence of a new vision of visual perception in art education. Perceptual psychology, especially in the theories of Wertheimer, Kofka, and Köhler, offers a different perspective when approaching visual perception through illusion. In addition, the fact that Gestalt theory supports the learning and teaching process with a holistic learning approach has led to the openings from the perspective of art education and didactic in the context of visual perception because repeated learning in art education gains a new meaning and can develop positively if it is supported by holistic learning what you understand usually more meaningful and lasting. Finally, the research aims to explore the perspective of art education by highlighting the basic principles of Gestalt theory.

From classic theory and research in psychology, we distill a broad theoretical statement that evaluative responding can be immediate, unintentional, implicit, stimulus based, and linked directly to approach and avoidance motives. This statement suggests that evaluative responses should be elicited by novel, nonrepresentational stimuli (e.g., abstract art, “foreign” words). We tested this hypothesis through combining the best features of relevant automatic-affect research paradigms. We first obtained explicit evaluative ratings of novel stimuli. From these, we selected normatively positive and negative stimuli to use as primes in a sequential priming paradigm. Two experiments using this paradigm demonstrated that briefly presented novel prime stimuli were evaluated automatically, as they facilitated responses to subsequently presented target stimuli of the same valence just as much as did pictures or names of real objects. A final experiment revealed that exposure to novel stimuli produces muscular predispositions to approach or avoid them.

Picking up on notions such as rhythm, time, affect, and event, particularly through their discussion in relation to Susanne Langer’s work, I argue for the consideration of the sonic event as an instance of a different kind of temporality subsisting underneath clock-time and sense perception. Ultimately, and this is the position of this essay, an investigation into experimental projects that interweave digital, sound, and aesthetic dimensions enables the articulation of a rhythmic time that helps account for the unknown, indeterminate, and unintentional forces immanent to the sonic.

Conversations emerge as the primary media for exchanging ideas and conceptions. From the listener’s perspective, identifying various affective qualities, such as sarcasm, humour, and emotions, is paramount for comprehending the true connotation of the emitted utterance. However, one of the major hurdles faced in learning these affect dimensions is the presence of figurative language, viz. irony, metaphor, or sarcasm. We hypothesize that any detection system constituting the exhaustive and explicit presentation of the emitted utterance would improve the overall comprehension of the dialogue. To this end, we explore the task of Sarcasm Explanation in Dialogues, which aims to unfold the hidden irony behind sarcastic utterances. We propose MOSES, a deep neural network which takes a multimodal (sarcastic) dialogue instance as an input and generates a natural language sentence as its explanation. Subsequently, we leverage the generated explanation for various natural language understanding tasks in a conversational dialogue setup, such as sarcasm detection, humour identification, and emotion recognition. Our evaluation shows that MOSES outperforms the state-of-the-art system for SED by an average of ∼2% on different evaluation metrics, such as ROUGE, BLEU, and METEOR. Further, we observe that leveraging the generated explanation advances three downstream tasks for affect classification – an average improvement of ~14% F1-score in the sarcasm detection task and ∼2% in the humour identification and emotion recognition task. We also perform extensive analyses to assess the quality of the results.

Abstract. Past research has linked action orientation to intuitive affect regulation ( Koole & Jostmann, 2004 ; Kuhl, 1981 ). The present research examines whether action orientation can regulate subliminally activated affect. In an experimental study, action- vs. state-oriented participants were exposed to subliminal primes of schematic faces with an angry, neutral, or happy expression. Participants subsequently rated their affect on a basic affect measure. The results showed prime-congruent effects among state-oriented individuals: subliminal angry primes led to lower basic affect compared to subliminal happy primes. Action-oriented participants were not influenced by the subliminal priming in their basic affective reactions. The authors conclude that action orientation is a regulator of basic affective responses, even when these responses are triggered outside of conscious awareness.

Recent years have seen an explosion of interest in the field of ‘art-science’ collaborations for their perceived capacity to develop new cultural understandings of technology and science. In this article, and through an engagement with the philosophy of Gilbert Simondon, I argue that if art-science represents an important site for the formation of an alternate technical culture today, then it is because of the new technical mentalities that such practices might cultivate. Here, creating a new technical mentality is more than just a representational concern with enhancing ‘public awareness’ of technology, instead referring to more material transformations in our embodied capacities for perceiving and affectively engaging with technologies. I flesh this potential out through an encounter with work of Art Orienté objet, whose art-science collaborations challenge the anthropocentric and utilitarian mentalities of contemporary bioscience through explorations of the transindividual conditions of human embodiment and its material immersion within nonhuman ecologies.

More information is often correlated with greater appreciation. Drawing on the model of aesthetic appreciation and aesthetic judgment in art psychology, this study aims to investigate changes in tourists’ aesthetic judgments of tourist crafts when provided with different background information. Blue calico, an art form created through white pulp dyeing and printing, is an intangible cultural heritage of China. The photographs used in this study illustrate typical examples of blue calicos that are commonly sold in tourist gift shops in Wuzhen, China. Data from a sample of 133 participants (49 women and 84 men) was analyzed using Two-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA. We examined to what extent respondents varied their assessments of the calicos based on author manipulation of background factors, such as commentaries by the artist or details about the production process. We found that tourists’ impressions of the aesthetics of blue calicos were predicted by background factors, especially those of tourists who were less interested in high arts. Specifically, blue calicos reported to tourists with names that conveyed an auspicious meaning predicted tourists’ assessments of the calicos as more aesthetically pleasing. Explanations of the production process also predicted an increased appreciation of calico aesthetics. Conversely, artists’ commentaries were not significantly correlated with an increased aesthetic merit of calicos. Understanding what may affect tourists’ assessment of art could help those in the tourism industry market souvenirs to drive sales and enhance tourists’ understanding and appreciation of intangible cultural heritage.
