Streszczenie:
<p>Aesthetics is a pillar consideration in historic preservation. Yet, purposing aesthetics for historic preservation ends seems to lag behind the opportunities. Utterly subjective, aesthetics poses challenges for the preservation community worldwide to moderate, accommodate, and purpose aesthetics in heritage programs. The challenges revolve around the assessment of aesthetical purposing in three domains. These domains include the community disposition towards accommodating aesthetics (advocacy), the criteria and strategies for assessing the aesthetic value of historic resources (signification), and, the standards for treating historic resources in preservation projects (interpretation). This study, therefore, assesses the trends for purposing aesthetics in historic preservation thought and practice through three platforms: advocating aesthetics, signifying aesthetics, and interpreting aesthetics. The study completed literature content analysis on aesthetics in general and aesthetics in historic preservation in particular. Further, because of the perspective of the study, the works of international and country preservation programs provided information relevant to advocacy, signification, and interpretation of aesthetics that have been refined by classification, comparison, and exemplification methods. Among others, these works include those of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the U.S. National Historic Preservation Program in the National Park Service. The study culminated with general and platform-specific conclusions. First, as the three proposed platforms (advocacy, signification, and interpretation) maintain structural and serial relationships, they constitute a relevant and feasible framework for assessing aesthetical purposing. Second, as the aesthetical purposing assessment followed a broad, international perspective, the conclusions of the study are commensurate with the selective scope of information used from international and country preservation programs. Third, the contribution to aesthetical purposing at each of the three platforms can be measure only in general, and at times, subjective terms.</p><p><strong>Highlights:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Proposing aesthetical advocacy, aesthetical signification, and aesthetical interpretation as a platform framework to assess the purposing of aesthetics was feasible.</p></li><li><p>As aesthetical purposing was approached from a broad, international perspective, the conclusions of the study commensurate with the selective scope of information used.</p></li><li><p>The contribution to aesthetical purposing at each of the three platforms is hard to measure; however, the indications point to uneven contribution.</p></li></ul>

AbstractNasal bone fractures are the commonest type of bony facial injury causing aesthetic deformity. The aim of this study was to identify the effect of nasal trauma and fracture manipulation on the aesthetic proportions of the nose, by comparing pre- and post-treatment nasal aesthetics. Thirty-two patients (26 men and 6 women) underwent aesthetic assessment prior to treatment of the injury by closed nasal manipulation, 7 to 10 days after the initial injury. Standard facial aesthetic photographic assessments were performed prior to and following manipulation. Assessment involved measurement of standard nasal aesthetic parameters. In the nasal trauma cohort, the main anomalies in nasal aesthetics were nasal deviation and differences in the nasal aesthetic profile. Nasal fracture manipulation successfully reduced deviation from an average of 35° pre-manipulation to an average of 9° post-manipulation.

The inherent connections among aesthetic attributes and aesthetics are crucial for image aesthetic assessment, but have not been thoroughly explored yet. In this paper, we propose a novel image aesthetic assessment assisted by attributes through both representation-level and label-level. The attributes are used as privileged information, which is only required during training. Specifically, we first propose a multitask deep convolutional rating network to learn the aesthetic score and attributes simultaneously. The attributes are explored to construct better feature representations for aesthetic assessment through multi-task learning. After that, we introduce a discriminator to distinguish the predicted attributes and aesthetics of the multi-task deep network from the ground truth label distribution embedded in the training data. The multi-task deep network wants to output aesthetic score and attributes as close to the ground truth labels as possible. Thus the deep network and the discriminator compete with each other. Through adversarial learning, the attributes are explored to enforce the distribution of the predicted attributes and aesthetics to converge to the ground truth label distribution. Experimental results on two benchmark databases demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method to state of the art work.

Streszczenie:
Due to the subjective nature of people’s aesthetic experiences with respect to images, personalized image aesthetics assessment (PIAA), which can simulate the aesthetic experiences of individual users to estimate images, has received extensive attention from researchers in the computational intelligence and computer vision communities. Existing PIAA models are usually built on prior knowledge that directly learns the generic aesthetic results of images from most people or the personalized aesthetic results of images from a large number of individuals. However, the learned prior knowledge ignores the mutual influence of the multiple attributes of images and users in their personalized aesthetic experiences. To this end, this paper proposes a personalized image aesthetics assessment method via multi-attribute interactive reasoning. Different from existing PIAA models, the multi-attribute interaction constructed from both images and users is used as more effective prior knowledge. First, we designed a generic aesthetics extraction module from the perspective of images to obtain the aesthetic score distribution and multiple objective attributes of images rated by most users. Then, we propose a multi-attribute interactive reasoning network from the perspective of users. By interacting multiple subjective attributes of users with multiple objective attributes of images, we fused the obtained multi-attribute interactive features and aesthetic score distribution to predict personalized aesthetic scores. Experimental results on multiple PIAA datasets demonstrated our method outperformed state-of-the-art PIAA methods.

As a cultural ecosystem service, the aesthetic value of landscapes contributes to human well-being, but studies linking biodiversity and ecosystem services generally do not account for this particular service. Therefore, congruence between the aesthetic perception of landscapes, ecological value and biodiversity remains poorly understood. Here, we describe the conceptual background, current methodologies and future challenges of assessing landscape aesthetics and its relationship with biodiversity. We highlight the methodological gaps between the assessment of landscape aesthetics, ecological diversity and functioning. We discuss the challenges associated with connecting landscape aesthetics with ecological value, and the scaling issues in the assessment of human aesthetics perception. To better integrate aesthetic value and ecological components of biodiversity, we propose to combine the study of aesthetics and the understanding of ecological function at both the species and landscape levels. Given the urgent need to engage society in conservation efforts, this approach, based on the combination of the aesthetic experience and the recognition of ecological functioning by the general public, will help change our culture of nature and promote ecologically oriented conservation policies.

Streszczenie:
Image aesthetic evaluation refers to the subjective aesthetic evaluation of images. Computational aesthetics has been widely concerned due to the limitations of subjective evaluation. Aiming at the problem that the existing evaluation methods of image aesthetic quality only extract the low-level features of images and they have a low correlation with human subjective perception, this paper proposes an aesthetic evaluation model based on latent semantic features. The aesthetic features of images are extracted by superpixel segmentation that is based on weighted density POI (Point of Interest), which includes semantic features, texture features, and color features. These features are mapped to feature words by LLC (Locality-constrained Linear Coding) and, furthermore, latent semantic features are extracted using the LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation). Finally, the SVM classifier is used to establish the classification prediction model of image aesthetics. The experimental results on the AVA dataset show that the feature coding based on latent semantics proposed in this paper improves the adaptability of the image aesthetic prediction model, and the correlation with human subjective perception reaches 83.75%.

Objective: To determine if cropping facial images affects nasolabial aesthetics assessments in unilateral cleft lip patients and to evaluate the effect of facial attractiveness on nasolabial evaluation. Design: Two cleft surgeons and one cleft orthodontist assessed standardized frontal photographs 4 times; nasolabial aesthetics were rated on cropped and full-face images using the Cleft Aesthetic Rating Scale, and total facial attractiveness was rated on full-face images with and without the nasolabial area blurred using a 5-point Likert scale. Setting: Cleft Palate Craniofacial Unit of a University Medical Center. Patients: Inclusion criteria: nonsyndromic unilateral cleft lip and an available frontal view photograph around 10 years of age. Exclusion criteria: a history of facial trauma and an incomplete cleft. Eighty-one photographs were available for assessment. Main Outcome Measures: Differences in mean CARS scores between cropped versus full-face photographs and attractive versus unattractive rated patients were evaluated by paired t test. Results: Nasolabial aesthetics are scored more negatively on full-face photographs compared to cropped photographs, regardless of facial attractiveness. (Mean CARS score, nose: cropped = 2.8, full-face = 3.0, P < .001; lip: cropped = 2.4, full-face = 2.7, P < .001; nose and lip: cropped = 2.6, full-face = 2.8, P < .001). Conclusion: Aesthetic outcomes of the nasolabial area are assessed significantly more positively when using cropped images compared to full-face images. For this reason, cropping images, revealing the nasolabial area only, is recommended for aesthetical assessments.

Visual aesthetic quality is the visual pleasure level that attracts people and makes them prefer certain areas. Visual aesthetic quality is valued and considered for urban forests but remains challenging. This could be due to a lack of understanding of visual aesthetic quality assessment variables based on visual aesthetic theories. This study supports an integrated conceptual framework based on the result of a systematic literature review study to describe and measure aesthetics that incorporates objective and subjective factors through urban forest visual character and urban forest visual quality. The results include defining and understanding a description of visual aesthetic factors and variables as well as a thorough explanation of visual aesthetic theories to comprehend how to assess the visual aesthetic quality of urban forests. This study agrees with and supports the visual aesthetic theoretical framework, and we believe that due to our shared evolutionary history, humans have a standard set of urban forest visual aesthetic features with preferences that change according to cultural and personal variances. Furthermore, this research provides a foundation of visual aesthetic variables of urban forests that will assist urban forest researchers, urban forest managers, and decision-makers in managing and protecting the visual aesthetics of urban forests.

Many studies have demonstrated that music has many benefits for children’s physical and mental development. However, many preschool educators have scant preparation for or a lack of experience in aesthetic education. The purpose of this study is to explore preschool educators’ perceptions of and reflections on aesthetic education training. We conducted a survey associated with three aspects: “aesthetics appreciation”, “aesthetics implementation”, and “aesthetics evaluation”. The results of the study show the majority of participants agreed that (1) musical participation would strengthen participants’ attitudes toward aesthetic appreciation through proper aesthetic training programs and (2) musical engagement would benefit young children by enhancing their aesthetic experiences. The attitudes toward aesthetic implementation for young children were more favorable among the middle-aged and experienced participants; (3) musical activities are also a good way to improve young children’s aesthetic abilities, which helps to create an aesthetic atmosphere in educational practice. These results indicate that it is vital for preschool educators to receive the appropriate training in aesthetics and continuous assessment to provide high-quality early education to young children.

Abstract Performance characteristics are an indicator of both, the technical as well as aesthetic state of buildings. Aesthetic needs are in disagreement with the merciless aging process. The beauty of a city is formed not only by the original forms of new residential buildings, but also by existing tenement housing; thus preserving their aesthetics becomes a necessity. One of the most important problems connected with using any building, but especially a residential building, is ensuring an adequate technical condition. Process of revitalization of residential buildings is connected with familiarity with the technical problems of passing. However, the secret of lasting is found, above all, in the propagation of aesthetics. The diagnosis of the technical condition is an initial stage of renovating historical buildings. Conclusions drawn from the diagnosis are a basis for planning revitalization works.

To establish an optimal model for photo aesthetic assessment, in this paper, an internal metric called the disentanglement-measure (D-measure) is introduced, which reflects the disentanglement degree of the final layer FC (full connection) nodes of convolutional neural network (CNN). By combining the F-measure with the D-measure to obtain an FD measure, an algorithm of determining the optimal model from many photo score prediction models generated by CNN-based repetitively self-revised learning (RSRL) is proposed. Furthermore, the aesthetics features of the model regarding the first fixation perspective (FFP) and the assessment interest region (AIR) are defined by means of the feature maps so as to analyze the consistency with human aesthetics. The experimental results show that the proposed method is helpful in improving the efficiency of determining the optimal model. Moreover, extracting the FFP and AIR of the models to the image is useful in understanding the internal properties of these models related to the human aesthetics and validating the external performances of the aesthetic assessment.

The automatic assessment of the aesthetic quality of a photo is a challenging and extensively studied problem. Most of the existing works focus on the aesthetic quality assessment of photos regardless of the depicted subject and mainly use features extracted from the entire image. It has been observed that the performance of generic content aesthetic assessment methods significantly decreases when it comes to images depicting faces. This paper introduces a method for evaluating the aesthetic quality of images with faces by encoding both the properties of the entire image and specific aspects of the face. Three different convolutional neural networks are exploited to encode information regarding perceptual quality, global image aesthetics, and facial attributes; then, a model is trained to combine these features to explicitly predict the aesthetics of images containing faces. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms existing methods for both binary, i.e., low/high, and continuous aesthetic score prediction on four different image databases in the state-of-the-art.

The article addresses the popular reading of Ingarden that his aesthetic theory is determined by ontology. This reading seems to suggest that, firstly, aesthetics lacks its autonomy, and, secondly, the subject of aesthetic experience is reproductive, and passive. The author focuses on Ingarden’s aesthetics formulated by him in the period of 1925–1944. Moreover, the study presents selected elements of Ingarden’s phenomenology of aesthetic experience, and by doing so, the author aims at showing how Ingarden’s aesthetics was reconsidered by Blaustein, a student of Ingarden, whose theory seems to lead one beyond the scope of ontology. Blaustein, namely, reconsiders Ingarden’s theory of purely intentional objects by interpreting it in a descriptive-psychological, or phenomenological fashion. The article is divided into four parts. In section 1, the author highlights historical interconnections between Ingarden, and Blaustein. Section 2.1. is devoted to Ingarden’s phenomenological approach towards aesthetic experience as a phasic structure. At this basis, in section 2.2., Ingarden’s early theory of intentional objects is to be discussed. Section 3 concerns Blaustein’s contribution to phenomenology of aesthetic experience. Given that Blaustein formulates his theory in discussion with Ingarden, section 3.1. is devoted to Blaustein’s critical assessment of Ingarden’s method, and aesthetics. Next, in section 3.2., the author presents Blaustein’s original theory of presentations, and its use in aesthetics. Finally, in section 4, the author lists similarities, and differences between Blaustein’s and Ingarden’s aesthetic theories.

In recent years, computational aesthetics, which connects science and art, is becoming a new interdisciplinary field that brings technology into art creating. With advanced CAD technology and artificial intelligence, computational aesthetics has been widely used in many design fields such as architecture and industry design. Famous design companies such as Foster+Partners, Zaha Hadid and BIG have already adopted computational and parametric design method as a competitive way to enhance creativity. But there are still some argues that this new aesthetics is superficial or even cold. In terms of generative art, as an advanced digital art, reveals a new aesthetic power, which is impressive. In this context, the purpose of the study aims at comparing computational aesthetics with aesthetics to reveal their differentiation and correlation that benefit for designer to fresh the cognition of this new approach vice versa. As methods of this research, firstly previous researches and literature are collected and comparatively analyzed on the concept and relationships of aesthetics and computational aesthetics, as well as the assessment method. Secondly, through case studies, under the characters of these two aesthetic approaches in design field, three representative cases are selected to be deeply investigated by collecting and analyzing relevant articles, books and online materials to explain the respective features. Then, after comparison and further analysis, explaining how computational aesthetics as a rational aesthetic expression can augment the limit of human aesthetic experience and the design thinking process. The final results of this paper point that aesthetics dominated by emotional mind belongs to a top-down thinking process, while computational aesthetics because of its algorithmic generated basis, which dominated by logic mind, it belongs to a bottom-up thinking process. It is expected that the findings based on this research can provide certain guidance for designers to make good use of them.

In this way, with a flexible and dynamic narrative structure that turns changed so as to maintain its coherence, which can create endless imaginative narratives and present these narratives that provide a structure which allows the viewer. Cinema is quite close to the appearance in life, and the illusion of reality is an inalienable attribute of it. Reality is sometimes used as a whole, sometimes a part of it is reflected on the screens. At the core of the language of cinema lies the visual perception of the world in which people live. The concept of aesthetics is essential to understanding the ways in which contemporary and popular culture interacts with cinema. Light, sound, color and movement elements are involved in providing visual communication. Color, one of the most important elements of visual design in the cinema industry, is at the heart of the narrative world created by cinema. Basically there is no color, there is light. The element of color can be said to be an aesthetic transformation of reality or a directed, interpreted sense of reality. Every image in the cinema is accepted as a sign as the carrier of the filmic image. In addition to this, cinema is a visual art, as well as an auditory art. Cinema, which was considered as an art before sound, has undergone a structural change with the introduction of sound. Cinema aesthetics is a special aesthetic area established with cinematography and dealing with beauty. For this reason, the aim of the study is to reveal the importance of aesthetic elements for the art of cinema. In addition, the basic aesthetic elements in the art of cinema are discussed in detail and it is tried to explain why aesthetic elements are important for the art of cinema. Keywords: Cinema Art, Aesthetics, Lighting, Color, Image, Sound.

The article discusses the possibilities of the formal analysis of the fine-art painting composition on the basis of the classical definitions of beauty and computational aesthetics’ approaches of the second half of the 20th century he authors define the problem and consider solutions for the formalization of aesthetic perception in the context of aesthetic text, i.e., as part of the fine arts composition – a formal sequence of signs simply ordered in accordance with the syntactic rules’ system. The methodology of the research is defined by the general semiotics, distinguishing semantics, syntax, and pragmatics of a sign, by the aesthetic analysis’ methods, ranging according to the author’s message aesthetics, receptive aesthetics, and text aesthetics, as well as by the computational analysis methods connected with neural network means of defining the images’ symmetry. The article reveals preconditions for the emergence and also the current state of computational aesthetics as an interdisciplinary branch of knowledge. Analyzing the problem from the perspective of philosophy, aesthetics, semiotics, and technology, the authors draw attention to the need to improve the computational aesthetics methods. Firstly, the existing methods do not always enable to describe the fine-art object adequately. Secondly, there exists the so-called reduction of aesthetic assertion transforming it into the assertion concerning the object’s external characteristics. As a result, the authors assume that the increasing complexity of the current mathematical models and the experts’ subjective assessment support will allow to reach a compromise solution that enables the development of computational aesthetics as a branch of knowledge. Enhancement and development of the mathematical models, taking into account the rules of semiotics and subjectivism of the human perception, is the relevant objective of computational analysis of the aesthetic fine-arts text. The results of the present research supports the classic statement regarding the underivability of semantic and pragmatic propositions from syntax. The research concludes that relevant objectives are to find a correlation between, one the one hand, the axes and points of symmetry, deriving from the neural simulation, and, on the other hand, aesthetic effect, emerging from the perception of fine-art paintings.

Objective: To determine if there is a correlation between objective nasolabial aesthetics assessment using the Cleft Aesthetic Rating Scale (CARS) and patient satisfaction. Design: Retrospective analysis of a generic satisfaction questionnaire and independent assessment by three cleft surgeons of the nasolabial area of these patients on 2D frontal photographs, using the CARS. Setting: The Vrije Universiteit Medical Center and The Academic Center for Dentistry Amsterdam. Patients: Thirty-nine 18-year old patients with a repaired complete or incomplete unilateral cleft lip, with or without a cleft palate, and a completed satisfaction questionnaire. Exclusion criteria were an incomplete questionnaire; a history of facial trauma; and congenital syndromes affecting facial appearance. Main Outcome Measures: The correlation between surgeon evaluation (on a 5-point Likert scale) and patient satisfaction (not, moderately or very satisfied) on nasolabial appearance was assessed using Spearman rho (ρ). Results: There was a negligible correlation between surgeon evaluation and patient satisfaction on nose assessment (ρ = 0.20) and a moderate correlation on lip assessment (ρ = 0.32). Conclusions: Most literature supports this discrepancy between different objective aesthetics evaluation methods and subjective patient-reported outcome measures, suggesting there are factors playing a role in patient satisfaction that are impossible to objectify with assessment methods. Therefore, a strong emphasis should remain on clear communication between the physician and patient regarding their expectations, perception, and satisfaction of surgery results.

The results showed that the aesthetics of the ceramic craft products with Balinese puppets ornaments seen from unity, harmony, symmetry, balance, and contrast are quite good, although not yet optimal. Besides, the visual aesthetics of the ceramic works have not displayed good complexity, so the beauty that obtained was not optimal. The visual aesthetic assessment of this work was subjective in nature, so it was possible that there will be different judgments. The conclusion that aesthetics can be achieved by elevating the cultural traditions of the past and at the same time as a form of appreciation for that culture and become a differentiator amid the rise of Chinese ceramics in Indonesia.

Aesthetic properties are important characteristics of any territory. Currently, there are quite a few methodological developments for evaluating the aesthetic properties of landscapes. Conventionally, they can be divided into traditional assessment methods, where the assessment is based solely on fi surveys, and the other - those based on modern approach, in which fi ld research is supplemented by GIS technologies. In turn, fi surveys are highly labor-intensive and, as a result, are usually carried out for small key areas or individual routes. With the introduction of GIS and remote sensing data (RSD) of high spatial resolution, it became possible without much diffi to assess many indicators of the aesthetic attractiveness of landscapes. This article is devoted to an overview of development of modern methodological approaches to assessing the aesthetic properties of landscapes. The paper opens with historic review of the aesthetic studies of landscapes, then discusses theoretical questions such as the defi of the concept of “aesthetics of the landscape” and the exploration of aesthetic perception and, fi ally, presents a case study of application of GIS technologies for aesthetic evaluation of landscapes.

Objective:Assess the weight and contribution of each of the parameters of the Asher-McDade Scale to overall subjective assessment of nasolabial aesthetics following cleft lip repair.Design:Retrospective cohort evaluation.Setting:Cleft and craniofacial center.Participants:Forty-one patients who underwent unilateral cleft lip repair.Interventions:Unilateral cleft lip repair.Main Outcome Measures:Nasolabial rating using the Asher-McDade scale and overall subjective assessment of nasolabial aesthetics using a rank score following unilateral cleft lip repair. Results:Strong interrater reliability was observed between the 3 raters. Significant association was determined on bivariate analysis between nasal form score (β = 27.06; P < .001), nasal symmetry score (β = 26.41; P < .001), nasal profile score (β = 28.75; P < .001), vermilion border score (β = 13.40; P = .012), and the ranking score. Adjusted β coefficients obtained from multivariate regression analysis were used to develop a modified nasolabial appearance score (over 5), that is, weighted for each of the 4 parameters: nasal form (over 8, adjusted β = 14.33), nasal symmetry (over 5, adjusted β = 7.96), nasal profile (over 5, adjusted β = 9.44), and vermilion (over 2, adjusted β = 3.31). Regression analysis between our modified nasolabial appearance score and patient ranking score demonstrated superior goodness of fit when compared to the Asher-McDade overall nasolabial appearance score ( R2= .80; P < .001 vs R2= .69; P < .001).Conclusion:The parameters evaluated in the Asher-McDade scale have different weights and contribute differently to overall subjective assessment of nasolabial aesthetic outcomes following cleft lip repair. Adjusting for their weights results in a modified score that demonstrates superior correlation with overall subjective assessment of nasolabial aesthetic outcomes.

Visual aesthetic assessment has been an active research field for decades. Although latest methods have achieved promising performance on benchmark datasets, they typically rely on a large number of manual annotations including both aesthetic labels and related image attributes. In this paper, we revisit the problem of image aesthetic assessment from the self-supervised feature learning perspective. Our motivation is that a suitable feature representation for image aesthetic assessment should be able to distinguish different expert-designed image manipulations, which have close relationships with negative aesthetic effects. To this end, we design two novel pretext tasks to identify the types and parameters of editing operations applied to synthetic instances. The features from our pretext tasks are then adapted for a one-layer linear classifier to evaluate the performance in terms of binary aesthetic classification. We conduct extensive quantitative experiments on three benchmark datasets and demonstrate that our approach can faithfully extract aesthetics-aware features and outperform alternative pretext schemes. Moreover, we achieve comparable results to state-of-the-art supervised methods that use 10 million labels from ImageNet.

Image aesthetic assessment has always been regarded as a challenging task because of the variability of subjective preference. Besides, the assessment of a photo is also related to its style, semantic content, etc. Conventionally, the estimations of aesthetic score and style for an image are treated as separate problems. In this paper, we explore the inter-relatedness between the aesthetics and image style, and design a neural network that can jointly categorize image by styles and give an aesthetic score distribution. To this end, we propose a multi-task network (MTNet) with an aesthetic column serving as a score predictor and a style column serving as a style classifier. The angular-softmax loss is applied in training primary style classifiers to maximize the margin among classes in single-label training data; the semi-supervised method is applied to improve the network’s generalization ability iteratively. We combine the regression loss and classification loss in training aesthetic score. Experiments on the AVA dataset show the superiority of our network in both image attributes classification and aesthetic ranking tasks.

More information is often correlated with greater appreciation. Drawing on the model of aesthetic appreciation and aesthetic judgment in art psychology, this study aims to investigate changes in tourists’ aesthetic judgments of tourist crafts when provided with different background information. Blue calico, an art form created through white pulp dyeing and printing, is an intangible cultural heritage of China. The photographs used in this study illustrate typical examples of blue calicos that are commonly sold in tourist gift shops in Wuzhen, China. Data from a sample of 133 participants (49 women and 84 men) was analyzed using Two-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA. We examined to what extent respondents varied their assessments of the calicos based on author manipulation of background factors, such as commentaries by the artist or details about the production process. We found that tourists’ impressions of the aesthetics of blue calicos were predicted by background factors, especially those of tourists who were less interested in high arts. Specifically, blue calicos reported to tourists with names that conveyed an auspicious meaning predicted tourists’ assessments of the calicos as more aesthetically pleasing. Explanations of the production process also predicted an increased appreciation of calico aesthetics. Conversely, artists’ commentaries were not significantly correlated with an increased aesthetic merit of calicos. Understanding what may affect tourists’ assessment of art could help those in the tourism industry market souvenirs to drive sales and enhance tourists’ understanding and appreciation of intangible cultural heritage.

Permanent forest reserves (PFR) in urban areas are an integral aspect of the urban forest concept and the basis of a city’s green infrastructure. The preservation of natural forests in urban areas has become a widely researched topic due to the environmental, social, and economic benefits provided by it. Although several studies have shown that visual aesthetics play a role in preserving natural forests in urban areas, visual aesthetic value is typically not prioritized in preservation plans since it varies based on the physical characteristics of natural forests in urban areas, making it difficult to measure universally. Therefore, this research aims to identify the suitable variables for assessing the visual aesthetic quality of permanent forest reserves within urban areas in Malaysia. This study selected two permanent forest reserves based on four criteria. Data were collected via participant-generated images taken along selected forest trails based on participant visual aesthetic preferences. Researchers and experts analyzed and classified the data according to content to identify suitable visual aesthetic quality variables. This research identified 14 suitable variables for assessing the visual aesthetics of PFRs in urban areas, with a dominant preference for information-processing theory variables. Mystery was the most present variable for the visual aesthetic quality assessment of PFRs. Furthermore, participants’ educational and emotional backgrounds, categorized as design, environmental, social, and technical, impacted their visual aesthetic preferences. Our findings serve as a foundation for assessing the visual aesthetic quality of natural forests within urban areas in Malaysia.

The proposed approach suggests that aesthetically appealing patterns are more likely to deliver a higher amount of information over multiple levels in comparison with less aesthetically appealing patterns when the same amount of energy is used. The proposed approach is evaluated using two datasets; the results show that the proposed approach is more accurate in classifying aesthetically appealing patterns compared to some related approaches that use different complexity measures.

Although the concept of image quality has been a subject of study for the image processing community for more than forty years (where, with the term “quality”, we are referring to the accuracy with which an image processing system captures, processes, stores, compresses, transmits, and displays the signals that compose an image), notions related to aesthetics of photographs and images have only appeared for about ten years within the community. Studies devoted to aesthetics of images are multiplying today, taking advantage of the latest machine learning techniques and mostly due to the proliferation of huge communities and websites, specialized in digital photography sharing and archiving, such as Flickr, Imgur, DeviantArt, and Instagram. In this review, we examine the latest advances of computer methods that aim at computationally distinguishing high-quality from low-quality photos and images, relying on machine learning techniques. The paper is organized as follows: First, we introduce many approaches to aesthetics, studied in philosophy, neurobiology, experimental psychology, and sociology, to see what lighting they propose to researchers. Such points of view let us explain the weakness of the current consensus on the difficult aesthetics problem and the importance of the ongoing debates on it. Then, we analyze the work done in the community of pattern recognition and artificial intelligence on the task of automatic aesthetic assessment, and we both compare and critically examine the presented results. Finally, we describe many issues that have not been addressed, and starting from these, we outline some possible future directions.

Aesthetic experience in a forest can typically be associated with attractive forest scenery that gives people a sense of visual pleasure. Characterized as a visual product based on people’s reactions towards various combinations of landscape settings, features, and objects, this type of natural visual pleasure may benefit people’s well-being, promotes natural and cultural heritage preservation, and encourages the growth of the eco-tourism industry. While most research on forest aesthetics focuses on non-urban settings, this study examines aesthetics in the context of urban forests. This study aims to systematically review landscape aesthetic assessment studies to propose a model for urban forests. We conducted a systematic review of research articles published from 2014 to 2020 by using three research journal databases, Science Direct, Scopus, and MDPI. In total, 55 research articles were identified and qualified for review based on the screening requirements. An additional 26 research articles were also included by using the snowball method to provide better understanding and outcomes for the study. The results were organized into these categories: definitions, benefits, philosophies, approaches, and variables for the aesthetic quality assessment in urban forest areas. In addition, we also found that aesthetic quality in urban forests is highly influenced by visual composition, visual sense, and visual conditions, which have also been proven to be important parts of forest functions and values that could contribute towards the preservation of urban green spaces.

The debate over the conceptual constructs of landscape aesthetics, specifically whether landscape quality is inherently related to landscape physical characteristics or is subjectively “in the eye of the beholder,” has continued for years. Solutions accommodating both the biophysical and perceptual aspects of landscapes are thus desirable for landscape planners and policymakers. In response to policy shifts that emphasise both expert and public landscape perspectives, this study investigates the relationships between formal and informal landscape evaluations. It analyses crowdsourced data describing landscape aesthetic quality (Scenic-Or-Not) and authoritative landscape quality assessments (the Landscape Assessment Decision Making Process (LANDMAP) of Wales). Some agreement was found regarding landforms most likely to be perceived as scenic or unattractive by experts and non-experts, which aligns with previous landscape perception studies. However, contested landscape typologies are identified formal and informal landscape aesthetic evaluations are compared. Several limitations and implications for current formal landscape assessment paradigms (GIS based and vertical) are discussed and several approaches for capturing on-the-ground perceptions are suggested including recent extensions to GIS derived viewsheds (e.g., vertical voxel viewsheds).

Abstract Introduction Initial download and use of sleep tracking is very high, but prolonged use is very low. Poor prolonged use may be attributable to several factors such as engagement, functionality, aesthetics, information, and recommendation. We appraised these five factors in 16 consumer- and research/medical- grade digital sleep devices. Methods Three reviewers independently assessed 16 consumer- and medical-grade sleep digital devices using the Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) App quality ratings, which measures engagement (engagement, entertainment, interest, customization, interactivity, target group), functionality (functionality, performance, ease of use, navigation, gestural design), aesthetics (layout, graphics, visual appeal), information (Accuracy. Goals, Quality of information, Quantity of information, Visual information, Credibility, and Evidence base) and recommended on a Likert scale, with 1- Inadequate to 5 Excellent. Each subcategory is rated on a 1-5 Likert scale which is summed for each category: engagement (30), functionality (25), aesthetics (15), information (35) and recommended (yes or no). Results Devices that had the highest engagement score were Fitbit (27), Apple Watch (27), Garmin (27), and Dreem 2 headband (25.5). Apple Watch (30) had highest score; while Fitbit (13), Apple Watch (13), Garmin (13), Samsung Gear (13) had highest aesthetic score. While for information, ActiGraph (35), SOMNOwatch plus (35), CleveMed SleepView Monitor (35), CleveMed Sapphire PSG (35), SOMNOscreen plus (35), Nox T3 Sleep Monitor (35) and Nox A1 PSG System (35) had the highest ratings. The Dreem 2 headband has the potential induce prolong use among users with and without sleep disorders, based on high scores on engagement (25.5), Functionality (20.5), and Information (26.5). Conclusion Consumer- and research-grade digital devices that measure sleep have varying levels of engagement, functionality, aesthetics, information and recommendations to facilitate prolong use. Consumer grade devices had higher engagement, functionality and aesthetics scores, while research grade devices had higher information and recommendation scores. If consumer- and research-grade devices are to have prolonged use, standardization is needed across the five MARS components. Support K01HL135452, R01MD007716, R01HL142066, and K07AG052685

Background: To investigate the mediation effects of physical activity (PA) on the relationship between the perceived neighborhood aesthetic environment and overweight/obesity in free-living South Africans. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 671 adults aged ≥ 35 years was analyzed. PA was assessed using the validated International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Perceived neighborhood aesthetics was assessed using the Neighborhood Environment Walkability Scale Questionnaire. Results: Of 671 participants, 76.0% were women, 34.1% aged 45–54 years, and 69.2% were overweight or obese. In adjusted logistic regression models, overweight/obesity was significantly associated with neighborhood aesthetics [odds ratio (OR) = 0.68; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.50–0.93] and PA (OR = 0.65; 95% CI, 0.65–0.90). In expanded multivariable models, overweight/obesity was associated with age 45–55 years (OR = 1.59; 95% CI, 1.05–2.40), female gender (OR = 6.24; 95% CI, 3.95–9.86), tertiary education (OR = 4.05; 95% CI, 1.19–13.86), and urban residence (OR = 2.46; 95% CI, 1.66–3.65). Conclusion: Aesthetics was positively associated with PA; both aesthetics and PA were negatively associated with overweight and obesity. There was no evidence to support a significant mediating effect of PA on the relationship between aesthetics and overweight/obesity. Future studies should consider objective assessment of aesthetics and PA. In addition, future studies should consider using longitudinal design to evaluate food-related environments, which are related to overweight or obesity.

This paper examines the customers’ experience assessment with the luxury daily sailing tours in the area of the Elaphite Islands of Dubrovnik. For the purpose of this study, the influence of the entertainment opportunities, the educational opportunities, the aesthetics, and the escapism components on the customer’s experience is investigated, as well as the correlation between overall customer satisfaction and age groups of customers. The personal interview method was used for data collection. Tourists were interviewed on boats during the tours in the area of Dubrovnik Elaphite Islands, Croatia. The Pine and Gilmore experience model was used to define the main elements of their experience. The analytic hierarchy process model was used for the customers’ experience assessment. According to the results of this study, entertainment and aesthetics have greater influence than education and escapism on customer satisfaction in the age group up to 30 years. Entertainment and escapism have greater influence than education and aesthetics on customer satisfaction in the age group from 31 to 60. The interesting findings of this study are that education and aesthetics have a greater influence than entertainment and escapism for the elderly, e.g., for the customers in the age group older than 61. The highest overall satisfaction with the daily sailing tour was found among tourists in the age group up to 30 years, followed by tourists in the age group from 31 to 60 years, and the lowest satisfaction was shown by tourists who were older than 60 years. This study indicates that all the areas are important and that customer satisfaction with each component, e.g., with the entertainment, education, escapism, and aesthetic, varies according to the age group. This study also indicates that there is a correlation between the overall customer’s experience assessment of the “Elaphite Islands of Dubrovnik” daily sailing tour and customer age group.

Objective To identify a valid method for scoring facial aesthetics, correlating clinicians' assessments with measurements taken from 3D facial photographs. Design Album assessment of facial images, using a visual analog scale of attractiveness and the scores ranked. Facial ratios, obtained following digitization of the images compared with control group mean data, obtained from the Farkas growth study and the differences from the matched mean calculated. Ranked scores compared according to the inclusion of surface as well as caliper (shortest distance) measurements and whether the ranked scores, representing difference to the mean, were weighted. Patients, Participants Eleven facial images were presented. Seven clinicians provided clinical judgment. Main Outcome Measures Correlation coefficients between mean attractiveness rankings and summed differences between patients' facial proportions and matched control data from the Farkas growth study. Results The highest correlation was obtained with the use of the difference accommodating the mean of the Farkas proportion index ( r = −.76, p = .006), followed by standard deviation ( r = −.65, p = .032), using data in which the difference is weighted according to the magnitude of the linear measurement involved. Repeatability of the clinicians' assessments and operator digitization were validated. Conclusions There appears to be potential in the use of the mean as aesthetic ideal as a principle in aesthetic assessment and perhaps as an objective means of outcome assessment after facial surgery. The most appropriate scoring method would seem to include use of both surface and caliper measurements and incorporate weighting.

Streszczenie:
Visual aesthetics is a success criterion for mobile apps. Despite considerable research on graphical user interface (GUI) assessments, there is a lack of studies investigating the reliability and validity of scale types on visual aesthetics as a unidimensional construct. In this study, 208 subjects were divided into four groups, each using a different rating scale and the VisAWI-S questionnaire as the golden standard, to assess the visual aesthetics of nine mobile GUIs. As a result, all scales showed excellent inter-rater reliability and good agreement. Seven-point scales resulted in slightly higher intra-rater reliability than those with five points, but agreement was lower using five-point Likert scales. All scales have shown to be valid compared with VisAWI-S and presented strong correlations pairwise. Results indicate that any of these scales are suitable to assess mobile GUI visual aesthetics reliably and validly as long as response quality is analyzed. This work supports the adoption of single-item questionnaires reducing effort and time, especially in large-scale assessment designs.

Aesthetics has an important role in determining the weight of karawitan. Aesthetics can also justify the creation of a composition. Naturally, if in the assessment of composition is always influenced by aesthetic factors to determine the high and low value of karawitan. However, aesthetic perspective also needs to be a reference to show the renewal of a karawitan. It's a form of creativity in art. One of the conceptions that can give aesthetic harmony in karawitan composition is the concept of tri mandala. Tri mandala is a three-dimensional philosophical concept of harmony that is usually a reference in the field of architecture to build sacred places, residences, and even traditional markets in Bali. Through the concept of Tri mandala, a karawitan harmony system that was originally oriented to the second dimension became developed into the third dimension. Therefore, the topic of tri mandala aesthetics in pasupati composition needs to be researched so that it can result in a new aesthetic point of view in karawitan. This topic is a type of qualitative research that is studied with several stages, namely: observation, consoralization, composite realization. The results showed that tri mandala renews the aesthetic value of a karawitan composition. The renewal is represented in a system of harmony, structure, and meaning. The connection of the three with the tri mandala is the third dimension. Everything refers to the power of three, the harmony of three, part three, and the meaning of three in the symbolization of the three realms namely, bhur, bwah, and swah.

Streszczenie:
This article discusses issues of verse theory as it relates to the stanza as a structural unit of a poetic text. The basic aesthetic categories (limits, harmony, grace, and beauty) are considered from the position of mathematical aesthetics, and a mathematical interpretation is offered for three of them (limits, harmony, and grace) in respect to the poetic text (stanza). The category “beauty” cannot correlate with formal descriptions, as far as beauty is the highest subjective-qualitative assessment of an observed object and formed on the basis of a quantitative-qualitative assessment of its limits, harmony, and grace. From the standpoint of aesthetic science, a verse represents the motion limits of a poetic thought. For the mathematical two new formal parameters are introduced, namely the “harmony” and “grace” of the poetic rhythm. In fact, these formal parameters are indicative correlates of expressive (sensual-meaningful) possibilities and kinds of artistic and poetic form (stanzas). In the network of mathematical aesthetics, new parameters acquire clear and mathematically precise definitions and computational procedures that make it possible to quantitatively assess the harmonic potential of different stanzas in their structural-systemic representation. The concept of a stanza’s harmonic profile is introduced, which allows very subtle differences to be captured in the aesthetic properties of different stanzas of Russian classical verse. The employment of new parameters is demonstrated through examples of the most productive of Pushkin’s stanzas.
