The process of adoption in the U.S. is incredibly hard to navigate as an adoptive parent. Each primary type of adoption (international, foster, private domestic) comes with its own challenges and costs. One of the hardest challenges for both adopted children and adoptive families forming a secure and satisfactory attachment. Examining what goes into a child’s ability to attach to caregiver will help the analysis of the attachment issues that all adoptive families undergo. The adoptive parent must also start to form an attachment to their child as well as help the child transition into their new placement. Adoptive parents however, often find themselves questioning the legitimacy of their parenthood with their new child. This is further hindered if the child has problems forming secure attachments to others. A greater breadth of resources are needed to counteract these common issues so that adoptive families can get more specific help for their unique situations. As adoption becomes more socially acceptable and prevalent, stronger pushes towards data collection and research will help future adoptive families to form secure attachments more quickly and easily.

Children who age out of foster care face adjustments and mental health issues at higher rates than their peers, but those who are adopted have the opportunity to heal from previous trauma and experience better outcomes. To create healthy family systems for adopted children, adoptive parents need support and guidance as they personally adjust and help their children adjust to a new family system. Previous research has focused on child identifiers rather than on the broader family system in efforts to understand adoption success and failure. In this transcendental phenomenological study, adoptive parents provided their lived experiences of support during the adoption process. The results were analyzed using Giorgi, Giorgi, and Morley's descriptive phenomenological psychological method and the results were framed using an adapted version of Bronfenbrenner's ecological model. The results offered experiences of support at all 4 levels of the ecological model and provided a framework to use for future research to understand the influences of the sources of support and a guideline for agencies and counselors to use when serving adoptive families. The results can aid in the proactive development of training and support services for adoptive families and provide information for professionals by offering insight into the nontraditional structure of adoptive families. This information may also be used to inform counseling programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs that offer the marriage, couples, and families specialization.

Adoption is a common occurrence within the field of social work, yet adoptees and their adoptive parents grapple with a multitude of challenges unique to this population. The needs of these children and families are continually scrutinized by social service professionals prior to adoption, but less is known of the needs and services available to this population after adoption is finalized. This study addressed the question: Does adoptive families’ use of post-adoptive resources increase positive adoption outcomes? Ten adoptive parents participated in semi-structured interviews as part of this study. Most participants felt they had access to adequate services, and struggled with issues common to all types of parenthood, adoptive or biological. Two issues which parents identified as needs, and which provide direction for social work practice, were: normalizing their families’ experiences; and navigating conversations regarding adoption and birth families with their children.

Notre recherche porte sur l’étude de la transmission intergénérationnelle de l’attachement père-enfant chez des familles adoptives, et sur le rôle modérateur de l’expérience paternelle adoptive. Dans cette perspective, nous avons examiné l’association entre la qualité des représentations de l’attachement des pères adoptifs et celle de leurs enfants adoptés (filles et garçons) de nationalité chilienne. Ensuite, nous avons exploré comment l’expérience paternelle adoptive peut moduler cette association. La population se compose de 25 dyades adoptives père-enfant. Nous avons pris un groupe témoin (20 dyades père-enfant biologiques) pour mieux repérer les effets de l’adoption. Les résultats indiquent que la majorité des enfants adoptés ont des représentations de l’attachement sécurisées. La qualité de la représentation de l’attachement du père adoptif n’exerce pas d’influence sur celle de l’enfant adopté. L’expérience paternelle adoptive n’a pas d’influence sur la qualité de l’attachement de l’enfant. L’expérience paternelle adoptive n’exerce pas non plus d’effet modérateur de l’association entre la qualité de la représentation de l’attachement du père adoptif et celle de son enfant. Nous pouvons conclure que la satisfaction de l’expérience paternelle adoptive et la qualité de la représentation de l’attachement du père adoptif sont associées, et que les caractéristiques de l’enfant, tel le sexe, peuvent exercer une influence sur la qualité de la représentation de l’attachement de l’enfant adopté, et sur la satisfaction de l’expérience paternelle adoptive
The goal of this study is to examine the intergenerational transmission of attachment in adoptive infant-father dyads, and the effect of “adoptive father experience” as a moderator variable in this transmission. Accordingly, this research studies intergenerational concordance between paternal attachment representation and his 4 – 5 years-olds child’s attachment representation in adoptive Chilean families. In addition, we analyzed the moderator effect of “adoptive father experience”. 25 infant-father adoptive dyads participated in this study, and a control group of 2à dyads infant-father biological dyads was considered. Results show that most of adoptive infants have a secure attachment representation. We did not find evidence for concordance between paternal attachment representation and his 4 – 5 years-old child’s attachment representation in adoptive and in biological Chilean families. Moreover, “Adoptive father experience” does not affect quality of child’s attachment representation. Also “Adoptive father experience” does not have a moderator effect in intergenerational transmission of attachment from adoptive father to child. Our findings suggest that satisfaction of “adoptive father experience” is associated with the quality of adoptive father’s attachment representation, and that the child’s characteristics, such as gender, can influence quality of child’s attachment representation, and satisfaction of “adoptive father experience”

This study focuses on the meaning of the Fatherhood of God in the counselling of the adoptee. A study of relevant literature has shown that the metaphor "God the Father" is seldom incorporated in pastoral counselling. This study explores the possibility of successfully incorporating the concept "Fatherhood of God" in the counselling of the adoptee. In order to do so, the perspectives of the basis theory and metatheory have been investigated. The basis theory has been developed through an exegetical study of Old Testament verses that speak explicitly of the Fatherhood of God, as well as the three Abba-texts of the New Testament. This indicates that the covenant is closely related to the Fatherhood of God. The metatheory has been developed after studying literature regarding adoption from the perspective of other disciplines. The matters identity, rejection and loss have been shown as significant issues in the life of the adoptee. An empirical study has been done in addition to the basis- and metatheory. This investigation has brought to light that the adoptee does in general sense not connect the concept "Fatherhood of God" to his adoption. In order to develop an own model, different existing models have been investigated. Thus it was decided to use the model of Eyrich and Hines as guideline. A model has been developed and proposed that successfully incorporates the research findings of this study. It seems that the concept "Fatherhood" of God can be successfully utilised in the pastoral counselling of the adoptee, especially regarding the issues of identity, rejection and loss.

A família deve ser entendida como um sistema, cujos elementos se encontram em constante interacção entre si e com o exterior, que mantém o seu equilíbrio ao longo de um processo de desenvolvimento (Sampaio & Gameiro, 1985). A mudança é uma constante no processo contínuo de construção de um sistema, sendo que o que precede a esta transição é um momento de crise que provoca stress, do qual o sistema procura recuperar (Celani, 2012). Qualquer família, seja ela adoptiva ou não, depara-se com momentos de crise com os quais tem de se reorganizar. Contudo, as famílias adoptivas possuem algumas especificidades decorrentes do processo de adopção que poderão provocar momentos de grande crise. Deste modo, o objectivo do presente estudo será compreender o impacto da adopção no seio de uma família, procurando obter um olhar sobre o funcionamento familiar nas famílias adoptivas. No sentido de dar resposta à finalidade deste estudo, desenvolveu-se uma investigação que utilizou uma metodologia qualitativa, utilizando como instrumento de recolha de dados uma entrevista semi-estruturada. Assim, a amostra do estudo é constituída por seis famílias adoptivas, sendo que as entrevistas foram feitas apenas às mães, excepto uma das entrevistas que foi feita ao casal em conjunto. Os participantes tinham idades compreendidas entre os 38 e os 60 anos (M = 49 anos), sendo que todos pertencem ao Distrito de Lisboa. A análise dos resultados permitiu verificar que a adopção, e todos os períodos passados por uma família adoptiva, parecem contribuir para algumas alterações ao nível do funcionamento familiar. A variável que parece ter mais influência na existência de um funcionamento familiar mais problemático é o motivo da adopção, sendo que as famílias cujos motivos de adopção se prendiam com questões de infertilidade ou dificuldades em engravidar apresentam níveis de funcionamento familiar mais desequilibrados.
The family should be understood as a system, whose elements are in constant interaction among themselves and with the outside, which keeps its balance throughout a developmental process (Sampaio & Gameiro, 1985). Change is a constant in the continuous process of building a system, and what precedes this transition is a time of crisis that causes stress, of which the system seeks to recover (Celani, 2012). Any family, whether adoptive or not, faces a crisis with which they have to reorganize. However, adoptive families have some specificities resulting from the adoption process that may cause moments of great crisis. Thus, the aim of this study is to understand the impact of adoption within a family, trying to get a look at family functioning in adoptive families. In order to meet the purpose of this study, a research was developed utilizing a qualitative methodology, using as an instrument of data collection a semi-structured interview. The study sample consists of six adoptive families. Only the mothers were interviewed, except in one of the interviews that was made to the couple. Participants were aged between 38 and 60 years (M = 49 years), all of which belong to the District of Lisbon. The analysis of the results has shown that the adoption, and all the hardships experienced by an adoptive family, appears to contribute to some changes to the level of family functioning. The variable that seems to have more influence on the existence of a more problematic family functioning is the purpose of adoption, such that the adoption within families whose motives were attached with issues of infertility or difficulty in conceiving present more unbalanced levels of family functioning.

Despite research that indicates that internationally adopted children are at greater risk for poor developmental outcomes than their non-adopted peers (Bimmel, Juffer, IJzendoorn, Bakermans-Kranenburg, 2003; Juffer, & van IJzendoorn, 2005), girls adopted from China into Western culture tend to thrive, exhibiting high self-esteem, low behavior problems (i.e., both externalizing and internalizing), and excelling academically (Rojewski, Shapiro, & Shapiro, 2000; Tan & Jordan-Arthur, 2012). However, few studies have examined whether this trend continues into adolescence, as well as to what factors lead to these positive outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of mental health outcomes among internationally adopted adolescent Chinese girls, particularly factors that predicted levels of internalizing pathology (e.g., depression and anxiety) in adolescence. To fulfill this purpose, a secondary data analysis (N = 167) of information collected as part of a longitudinal study of U.S. international adoptions of Chinese children (2005-present) was completed using a hierarchical regression approach. Overall, these variables (e.g., age at adoption, pre-adoption adversity, family stress, parenting style, adolescent self-esteem, and academic competence) predicted 35% of the variance in internalizing behavior outcomes. The positive adjustment that has been seen in childhood continued to adolescence in this study, with 88% of the adolescent girls reporting Total Internalizing T-scores of less than 60 (i.e., in the normal range) on the Youth Self-Report form on the Child Behavior Checklist (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001b). Authoritative parenting style and self-esteem showed the strongest relations to internalizing behaviors. Implications of the study for practice and discussion of future research based on these findings are explored.

An increasing number of looked-after children are being placed for adoption in accordance with the government drive to increase permanency for children in local authority care. Unfortunately it is estimated that approximately one fifth of all adoptive placements end in disruption. Previous studies attempting to identify factors associated with disruption have tended to focus on demographic details and assessment data to predict increased risk. Few attempts have been made to explore the phenomenon in more depth by considering the views and accounts of the individuals involved. This study explores the experience of adoption disruption from the perspective of the adoptive mothers. It considers their understanding of the main contributing factors and their views on how services could be improved.

Ambiguous loss refers to a loss that is unknown or undefined, making it difficult to cope with and resolve. Using a life course perspective that asserts that humans have agency to affect change in their own lives, this study focuses on an adoptee’s perceived ability to enact change in the situation surrounding the ambiguous loss that they may have experienced as a result of their adoption. Life course perspective also incorporates the concept of life trajectories, which explain how an early life experience can affect an individual over the course of his or her life. This study describes the essence of coping with adoption-related ambiguous loss from the viewpoint of adult adoptees.

This study examines an aspect of adoption which has been given only limited or partial attention in adoption research even though it is an increasing trend in adoption practice: sibling adoption. For adoption practitioners the issue of whether to place siblings together or apart is a vexed one. This is the dilemma upon which research on sibling adoption has focused, developing approaches to assessing the sibling relationship to help evaluate the benefits and disadvantages of keeping siblings together, whilst keeping the needs of the individual children in mind. The present research was motivated by what appeared to be a significant oversight in thinking around this dilemma: the possible impact of the sibling relationship on the adoptive parents. This oversight seemed indicative of a twofold omission: firstly, of a distinction between the meaning and implications for the adoptive parent-couple of adopting siblings rather than an individual child; secondly, of a full recognition of the complexity of sibling relationships - particularly those born out of early experiences of neglect and relational trauma - and how they might play out in the context of an adoption placement. With the aim of addressing these omissions I interviewed a small sample of adoptive parents and made their narratives of the experience of adopting a sibling-pair the object of my study. My hope was thus to shed some light on what it is like for previously childless couples to become the parents of siblings. My experience of doing the interviews and a narrative and thematic analysis of the parents’ accounts lead to some interesting findings: whilst the interviews elicited rich stories about their adoption experiences, it was difficult to hold the parents to talking about the sibling story. The affective vector seemed to lie in the respondents’ narratives of personal transformation or affirmation through the adoption, rather than in their encounters with the sibling relationship. In my discussion I consider how a sense of omission has often been expressed in sibling research, despite a growing literature on the subject. With reference to Mitchell’s psychoanalytic propositions about the role of siblings in our internal world, and Laplanche’s concepts of ‘going astray’ and ‘covering-over’ in psychoanalysis, I posit that we struggle to engage with the complexity of siblinghood both in theory and practice because of the profound and enduring existential threat that real and fantasied siblings pose to the individual’s sense of security, self-identity and value in the family, the group and any social milieu.

Many organizations aspire to adopt agile processes to take advantage of the numerous benefits that it offers to an organization. Those benefits include, but are not limited to, quicker return on investment, better software quality, and higher customer satisfaction. To date however, there is no structured process (at least that is published in the public domain) that guides organizations in adopting agile practices. To address this situation, we present the Agile Adoption Framework and the innovative approach we have used to implement it. The framework consists of two components: an agile measurement index, and a 4-Stage process, that together guide and assist the agile adoption efforts of organizations. More specifically, the Sidky Agile Measurement Index (SAMI) encompasses five agile levels that are used to identify the agile potential of projects and organizations. The 4-Stage process, on the other hand, helps determine (a) whether or not organizations are ready for agile adoption, and (b) guided by their potential, what set of agile practices can and should be introduced. To help substantiate the â goodnessâ of the Agile Adoption Framework, we presented it to various members of the agile community, and elicited responses through questionnaires. The results of that substantiation effort are encouraging, and also suggest further avenues for improvement.

Adoption trends have shifted in the past two decades and as a result, could impact established assumptions about behavior problems among adopted children. A comprehensive meta-analysis was published in 2005 attempting to come to more definitive conclusions regarding adoption behavior and moderators of adoption behavior. However, the study used a sample from over a dozen countries over a 44 year span. This study is a meta-analysis that has replicated many of the questions investigated by the previous analysis with a much more recent 15 year sample of adoptees placed only within the United States. The results show that combined international and domestic adoptee samples, as well as separate international and domestic adoptee samples are more likely to have total, externalizing, and internalizing behavior problems than their non-adopted counterparts. In addition, age at time of assessment, gender of adoptees, and length of time spent with adoptive family may moderate some of the behavior problems experienced by adoptees. Pre-adoptive adversity, age at time of assessment, and study quality were not shown to have moderating influence on behavior of adoptees.

Raising an adopted child from the child welfare system poses unique challenges because these children bring with them an increased risk for developmental and mental health problems (Simmel, 2007; Whitten & Weaver, 2010). Adoptions from Child Welfare have almost doubled in the last decade, comprising up to 41% of all adoptions (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2012). Of these adoptions, anywhere from 10% to 25% end up disrupting (Briggs & Webb, 2004; Festinger, 2002; Rosenthal & Groze, 1994; Smith & Howard, 2000). Thus, it is important to identify and understand which factors can likely increase adoption success or which ones are more likely to create barriers. Currently, there are some studies that have identified specific adoptive child traits that increase disruption (Barth, 1997; Barth & Berry, 1988; Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute, 2010; Rosenthal & Grove, 1990) along with some family factors (Barth, 2000; Coakley & Berrick, 2008; Festinger, 2002). However, two important family systems aspects, involving qualities that the adoptive parent themselves bring to the process, have thus far been overlooked in the research: attachment styles and parenting styles. In order to shed more light on this neglected aspect of the adoptive process, this study investigated whether or not there was a relationship between an adoptive caregiver's own attachment style or parenting style and adoption outcomes. The logistic regression method was used in the analysis of a convenience sample of 113 adoptive parents and it was found that two parental factors were the most influential in predicting adoption outcomes: anxious attachment style and authoritative parenting style. Additionally, incidence of trauma in the parent's history was identified as a factor that negatively impacted the chance of adoption success. The implications or clinical practice and research are discussed.

There are over a million adopted children in the United States, which makes up over 2% of the population. in spite of the fact that the majority of children are adopted into loving and caring homes, early life trauma puts them at higher risk for developing behavioral and emotional problems than non-adopted children. Due to these issues, many adoptive parents encounter post-adoption stress. This stress is often linked to minimal education regarding short- and long-term challenges associated with adoption. the adoption agency is likely the best group for addressing challenges, yet few researchers have studied adoption agency communication and adoptive parent adjustment. in this study I examined pre-adoption communication satisfaction, post-adoption adjustment (life change and parental adjustment), and coping strategies. Hypothesis 1 questioned the relationship between adoptive parents’ pre-adoption communication satisfaction with their social workers and post-adoption family adjustment; this hypothesis was supported only for problems related to home and work life adjustment. Hypothesis 2 predicted coping strategies would mediate the relationship between communication satisfaction and family adjustment. H2 was not supported for both life change and parental adjustment. Research Questions 1a and 1b inquired about the coping strategy that had an impact on life change and parental adjustment; escape-avoidance coping was most common for problems related to parental difficulty adjustment. a second research question was added post hoc; it questioned if special needs adopted children had an impact on family adjustment. Results indicated the special needs designation is related to home and work life adjustment. After discussing the theoretical and practical implications of this study, I offer limitations and directions for future research.

Intercountry adoptees represent a minority group in Australian schools. This research reveals that the majority of children appear to adjust well and have positive school experiences. It also shows, however, that the impact of attachment disruption and complex trauma on these children’s development and subsequent school experience may not be understood by school personnel. This qualitative multicase study uses attachment, trauma, child development and social constructionist theories to examine the primary school experiences of intercountry adoptees, from the perspectives of adoptive parents and their children. This study recommends a “Consultative Partners” Model for managing the intercountry adoptee’s school experience which makes better use of available social resources and places the child at the centre of policy and practice considerations in schools.

Malgré une plus grande diversité dans les recherches sur l’adoption depuis la dernière décennie, les études sur le développement de l’identité chez les personnes adoptées issues de groupes racisés au Québec sont rares. Pourtant, le fait de grandir dans un environnement où l’ensemble des gens n’est pas issu du même groupe racisé peut occasionner de grands obstacles. Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, neuf participantes adoptées à l’international et issues d’un groupe racisé ont été rencontrées afin de mieux comprendre comment se développe leur identité. Âgées entre 20 et 30 ans, les participantes ont partagé sur leur parcours de vie selon deux thèmes : celui de l’enfance et de l’adolescence et celui de la vie adulte. Les résultats obtenus soulignent l’importance d’une famille ouverte et encourageante dans la construction identitaire de l’enfant. L’impact de ces relations positives se transpose jusqu’à l’âge adulte pour l’ensemble des participantes. L’étude établit aussi que les familles adoptantes font face, encore aujourd’hui, à des stéréotypes, des microagressions et de l’intimidation. Pour les participantes qui ont subi de l’intimidation et des microagressions à répétition, les conséquences sur le développement identitaire sont majeures. Elles ont une incidence sur la place des préoccupations, sur la formation des représentations sociales, sur la présence d’émotions négatives et sur l’acceptation du statut d’adopté issu de groupes racisés. Les constats de cette étude montrent que, même si la majorité des participantes ont un parcours de vie positif, les impacts d’une intimidation fréquente sont importants. Il est également essentiel de prendre en compte les besoins de soutien et d’écoute ainsi que les bienfaits d’échanger avec d’autres personnes issues d’un groupe racisé, surtout à l’adolescence. Enfin, la nécessité de former des intervenants aux enjeux complexes rencontrés par les personnes adoptées issues de groupes racisés reste toujours d’actualité.

Despite calls for increased Adoption Communication Openness (ACO) within the adoptive family, research indicates that families still struggle to accomplish the recommended elements and levels of openness. What could be holding families back from this key process? Three focus groups comprised of 17 adoptive parents of early adolescents (aged 10-14) who were age 0-2 at the time of placement were thematically coded. This inductive analysis revealed the complexity rooted in being —sometimes successfully and sometimes not—communicatively open. Four key themes emerged painting a vivid and rich picture of: a) the breadth and depth of this experience; b) the work entailed; c) the emotionality of it; and d) the grief and loss embedded in it. These results strengthen the understanding of the lived-experience of the adoptive parent thus magnifying the call for not only further research into what drives ACO in the family, but also consistent and supportive pre- and post-adoption services and clinical work.

Com a presente investigação pretendemos aceder à compreensão das consequências psicológicas do abandono e do acolhimento temporário das crianças, com o objectivo de realizarmos um estudo exploratório sobre o Abandono Psicológico. Na revisão bibliográfica, atendendo ao facto de que a problemática do Abandono se relaciona com as questões ligadas à formação, insuficiência e/ou rompimento de Vínculos Afectivos e aos maus-tratos infantis, procuramos explorar teoricamente esses conceitos, pelo que a fundamentação teórica assenta em diversas reflexões acerca desses aspectos, antecedidos de um enquadramento da criança e da família ao longo da história e do enquadramento jurídico até à actualidade. A metodologia apresentada é a de utilização de um Questionário, que construímos e aplicámos numa amostra aleatória, constituída por cinquenta profissionais que exercem funções em Centros de Acolhimento Temporário de Menores em Risco. Através da sua aplicação, procuramos conhecer quais os sinais psicológicos consensualmente aceites pelos profissionais como de sofrimento psicológico das crianças acolhidas. Paralelamente, procurámos também saber quais as percepções dos profissionais sobre o seu papel para a organização afectiva das crianças acolhidas e sobre o actual sistema de acolhimento temporário. Verificamos que os profissionais identificam de forma consensual alguns sinais de sofrimento psicológico nas crianças acolhidas temporariamente, corroborando em muitos aspectos, as teorias apresentadas por diferentes autores. Conclui-se da necessidade dos técnicos dos centros de acolhimento temporário terem uma formação específica na área das crianças em risco, necessária para detectar e corrigir os tipos de afecto que estas crianças podem vir a apresentar (segundo a teoria de Guex) e da necessidade das crianças acolhidas temporariamente serem o mais rapidamente entregues às suas "famílias de adopção", de forma a receberem a constância do amor necessária ao seu desenvolvimento. Com base nos estudos de Guex, ao reconhecer em adultos sinais abandónicos da infância, é lícito inferir, com grande grau de possibilidade e de probabilidade, que muitas crianças apresentam sinais de mal-estar que podem ser considerados precursores de sintomas abandónicos.

Mulheres em transição para a maternidade por adoção vivenciam as transformações psíquicas e a espera por seus filhos enfrentando as adversidades específicas deste contexto. Com frequência, o período que antecede a chegada do filho adotivo é descrito como um momento de preparação para a parentalidade. Nesta etapa, que pode se estender por longos anos, a formação da identidade materna e a significação, através dos sentimentos, do tempo de espera pelo filho adotivo são importantes processos da construção destas famílias. Diante de tais evidências, a presente dissertação dedicou-se a compreender como se dão, no contexto da adoção, as transformações da organização psíquica no sentido de tornar-se mãe e quais são os sentimentos relatados na espera pela adoção em suas diferentes etapas que precedem a colocação da criança na família. Dois artigos compõem esta investigação. As participantes dos estudos foram quatro mulheres, de idades entre 38 e 44 anos, habilitadas e ativas no Cadastro Nacional de Adoção (CNA) há no máximo um ano. No primeiro foi investigado o processo de transformação da organização psíquica das mulheres (motherhood mindset), de acordo com Stern, Bruschweiler-Stern e Freeland (1998), no contexto da maternidade por adoção. Encontrou-se que mulheres em espera pela adoção vivenciam as mudanças próprias da formação da identidade materna, confirmando-se a experiência de gestação psíquica no período que antecede a chegada do filho adotivo. Já no segundo estudo, buscou-se compreender quais os sentimentos relatados por mulheres na espera pela adoção durante o processo de habilitação à adoção e durante a espera na fila do CNA. Os resultados apontaram que, na habilitação à adoção, as mulheres destacaram sentimentos como apreensão, frustração, dor e morosidade. Quando na espera na fila do CNA, estas mulheres enfatizaram sentimentos que foram alocados em duas categorias: esperança e desesperança. A análise destes dois estudos contribui para a literatura sobre a espera pela adoção, dando voz as mulheres que vivenciam este processo marcado por transformações psíquicas e comoções de sentimentos. Espera-se que este trabalho auxilie na compreensão da transição para a maternidade por adoção durante a espera pelo filho adotivo, motivando o cuidado com a saúde emocional destas famílias bem como novos trabalhos que se dediquem a esta temática.
Women in transition to adoptive motherhood experience the psychic transformations and the waiting for their children facing the specific adversities of this context. Often, the period that precedes the arrival of the adoptive child is described as a time of preparation for parenting. In this stage, which can last for many years, the development of the maternal identity and the significance of the waiting time are important processes of the construction of these families. In face of these evidences, this thesis is dedicated to understand how the transformations of psychic organization occur in the sense of becoming a mother in the context of adoption and what are the feelings manifested during the different stages of the waiting time that precedes the child`s reception in the family. Two papers compose this research. The participants of these studies were four women, aged between 38 and 44 years, qualified and active in the National Adoption Registry for a maximum of one year. In the first, the process of transformation of the motherhood mindset was investigated in the context of adoption maternity according to Stern, Bruschweiler-Stern and Freeland (1998). It was found that women waiting to adopt a child faced specific changes of the maternal identity development process, confirming the experience of psychic gestation in the period before the arrival of the adoptive child. In the other study, it was sought to understand the feelings in women waiting to adopt during the process of habilitation for adoption and during the waiting period in the National Adoption Registry´s queue. The analysis of these two studies contributes to the existing literature about the adoption waiting process, giving voice to these women who experienced this process marked by psychic transformations and feelings commotions. We hope that this thesis helps in understanding the transition to motherhood through adoption during the waiting period for the adopted child, motivating the attention to emotional health care of these families and the elaboration of new studies dedicated to this subject and the promotion of new studies dedicated to this subject.

L’expérience avec des familles issues de la migration et leurs adolescents en souffrance identitaire, que nous recevons dans notre dispositif de la clinique de la multiplicité alors que l’expression symptomatologique de leur mal être est au maximum nous a incités à ouvrir la question de la greffe, de l’adoption et de l’héritage psychiques. L’adoption, pensée comme l’aboutissement d’un processus réciproque de reconnaissance, demande à ce que soit interrogée la mise en place du rapport familier/étranger entre l’adolescent, l’enfant et ses parents. Pouvoir interroger la préhistoire psychique et les appartenances aussi bien chez les parents que chez l’adolescent/l’enfant c’est permettre de faire émerger les éléments sources, éléments constitutifs de l’identité issus de la transmission qui inscrivent dans les liens et les appartenances. C’est également permettre un traitement des restes ; ces restes qui agitent, qui poussent au clivage et à la destructivité. C’est aussi pouvoir pointer ce qui a fait défaut, ce qui a entravé ce processus. Ce travail d’archéologie psychique peut permettre de constituer ou de restaurer une membrane interne, une interface qui absorbe, filtre et transforme les éléments issus des échanges entre le dehors et le dedans ; entre l’enfant et ses parents ; un brassage d’informations qui s’imbriquent, se lient, qui fabrique la multiplicité, une multiplicité fonctionnelle qui enrichit l’identité. The increase in transracial adoption in modern society has not been without some controversy over its practice. Conflicting studies, have exposed and given rise to greater sensitivity to the impact of transracial adoption on adoptees-. As noted, prior studies have indicated that Korean adoptees adjust well to their environment (Feigelman & Silverman, Kim, 1977, 1978; Simon, 1974); however, some studies indicate a negative outcome (Chestang, 1972; Chimezie, 1975) and some ethnic groups (i.e., Native Americans and The National Association of Black Social Workers) have discouraged the practice of transracial adoption. In an attempt to clarify such issues surrounding transracial adoption, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of adoption on adult Korean adoptees.This study examined whether acculturation, assimilation, cultural identity, age of placement of Korean adoptees, and revisiting Korea play a role in self-concept. In addition, this study wanted to look at whether the positive initial adjustment found in Kim's (1977; 1978) studies continued into adulthood for Korean adoptees. Adjustment was based upon self-concept. The results from this study indicated that acculturation, assimilation, cultural identity, placement of Korean adoptees, and revisit of Korea had little influence in self-concept. As noted, the results indicated that: 1) acculturation was only related to Verbal self-concept; 2) revisiting Korea did not predict self-concept; however, cultural identity did play an important part in self concept; 3) age of placement of Korean adoptees related only to Verbal, Math, and Honesty self-concept; and 4) in general, positive adjustment based upon self-concept appeared to continue into adulthood for Korean adoptees.In summary, adjustment for Korean adoptees appeared to continue into adulthood. In addition, cultural identity appeared not to relate to Korean adoptees' self-concept. However, as noted, there needs to be further studies due to the limitations of this study, particularly the measurements.

Esta pesquisa estende modelos já existentes e avalia o Uso Real do mobile banking, mas também a Intenção de Comportamento traduzida na Intenção de Uso. Este estudo concluiu que os principais determinantes da Intenção de Comportamento do mobile banking são a Influência Social e a Vantagem Relativa. Além disso, as variáveis Risco Percebido, Falta de Informação e as Barreiras de Uso têm um efeito negativo sobre a Intenção de Comportamento. A Intenção de Comportamento e o Uso do Internet banking são considerados antecedentes significativos do Uso Real do mobile banking. Este estudo apresenta contribuições tanto para acadêmicos como para profissionais.
Technological advances at the level of mobile devices are transforming the world. Banking users are able to conduct banking services at anyplace and at any time by mobile banking. The purpose of this research is to analyze Intention and Action in mobile banking services. This research used PLS to test the causalities in the proposed model. Our proposal extends the existing models with an assessment of the Actual Usage of mobile banking and how Behavioral Intention translates into Action. This study found that the main determinants of Behavioral Intention for mobile banking are the Social Influence, and Relative Advantage. Also, the variables Perceived Risk, Lack of Information and Usage Barriers have a negative effect on the mobile banking Behavioral Intention. Behavior Intention and Internet banking Use are found to be significant antecedents of mobile banking Use. This study presents contributions o both academic and practitioner communities.
