Streszczenie:
This study examined the relationship of adolescent spirituality and mental health to recidivism in a sample of incarcerated adolescent males. Mental health has been strongly linked to adolescent problematic behavior, including delinquency and subsequent recidivism. Adolescent spirituality however, has not been explored to the same degree as mental health. There is little understanding for example, as to whether spirituality may act as a protective factor in regard to adolescent recidivism; particularly in the presence of other important factors. Both multidimensional measures and a longitudinal design were employed to explore spirituality and mental health during participation in, and after discharge from, a boot camp. Results support the likely importance of adolescent spirituality as a protective factor in regard to recidivism.

The family environment is associated with religiosity and spirituality as well as many aspects of adolescent lives, including their health behaviour. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess family environment associations with adolescent religious attendance (RA), i.e., weekly participation in religious services, and spirituality in a highly secular country. A nationally representative sample (n = 4182, 14.4 ± 1.1 years, 48.6% boys) of Czech adolescents participated in the 2014 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children cross-sectional study. RA, spirituality and the family environment, i.e., family communication, perceived emotional support, and parental monitoring, were measured. Higher adolescent RA was associated with lower self-reported easiness of communication with mother (odds ratio (OR) = 0.68; 99% confidence interval (99% CI) = 0.47–0.99; p < 0.01). In contrast, spiritual respondents were more likely to report both easier communication with their father (OR per standard deviation (SD) change = 1.12, 99% CI 1.02–1.23; p < 0.01) and mother (OR per SD change = 1.38 (1.23–1.55); p < 0.001) and higher perceived emotional support (OR per SD change = 1.73 (1.55–1.92); p < 0.001). Parents of respondents who attended religious services at least once a week, as well as parents of spiritual respondents, were generally more likely to monitor adolescent behaviour. Thus, this study provides information for parents, mental health workers, and pastoral carers. Further research should assess the association of a lower easiness of family communication with dissonances in adolescent–parent religiosity/spirituality and with higher parental monitoring.

The concept of spirituality as a positive youth development construct is reviewed in this paper. Both broad and narrow definitions of spirituality are examined and a working definition of spirituality is proposed. Regarding theories of spirituality, different models pertinent to spiritual development and the relationship between spirituality and positive youth development are highlighted. Different ecological factors, particularly family and peer influences, were found to influence spirituality. Research on the influence of spirituality on adolescent developmental outcomes is examined. Finally, ways to promote adolescent spirituality are discussed.

Research in some religious countries shows that religiosity and spirituality positively affect adolescent health. We studied whether religiosity and spirituality also have positive associations with adolescent health in a secular country. We tested the associations between religious attendance and spirituality and self-reported health and health complaints using a representative sample of Czech adolescents (n = 4182, 14.4 ± 1.1 years, 48.6% boys) from the 2014 health behavior in school-aged children (HBSC) study. We used religious attendance, the adjusted shortened version of the spiritual well-being scale (SWBS), and its two components—religious well-being (RWB) and existential well-being (EWB)—as independent variables and the eight item “HBSC symptom checklist” and self-reported overall health as dependent variables. A higher level of spirituality was associated with lower chances of health complaints and self-reported health, ranging from a 9% to 30% decrease in odd ratios (OR). Religious attendance was not associated with any of the observed variables. The EWB showed a negative association with all of the observed variables, with associations ranging from a 19% to 47% decrease. The RWB was associated with a higher risk of nervousness (OR = 1.12), while other associations were not significant. Non-spiritual but attending respondents were more likely to report a higher occurrence of stomachache (OR = 2.20) and had significantly worse overall health (OR = 2.38). In a largely secular country, we found that spirituality and the EWB (unlike religious attendance and the RWB) could have a significant influence on adolescent health.

This study aims to measure the validity and reliability of the Islamic Religious-Personality and Social Environmental (IRPS) model. Religiosity and spirituality mediated by social environment variables were measured by SEM-PLS. Cognitive development by Piaget and the spiritual development theory by Fawler were applied in this study. The quantitative approach as a data analysis tool for the five hypotheses developed in the model. To ensure the validity and reliability of the converger validity instrument, Deverger validity and Construct Reliability test were involved with 32 items, and indicators that were valid and reliable were used to measure the Religiosity and Spirituality mediated by the social environment towards the personality of the adolescent. A total of 381 samples had been taken with systematic random sampling. The sample consisted of high school students, vocational schools, and Islamic senior high schools. The age of the respondents consisted of 16-19 years consists of 112 males and 169 females. The IRPS model that was developed has gone through a predictive relevance test and it turns out that it can be used to measure Islamic Religion-Personality through a Social Environment. The study found that there was an influence of Islamic religiosity on adolescent personality and adolescent personality not influenced by Islamic spirituality. Islamic religiosity and spirituality correlated with the social environment and positively influencing the personality of adolescents.

The current study explores the association between religion and family functioning. Specifically, this study examined whether two aspects of religion, social religious support (from clergy and members of the congregation) and support from God (or spirituality), were related to frequency of household routines and parenting strategies as reported by both parents and adolescents, as well as adolescent problem behaviors. The sample consisted of 115 low-income African American mother-adolescent (age 14-18 years) dyads. Families were recruited as part of a larger study on the lives of low-income African American families with adolescents. Results indicated that higher levels of social religious support and spirituality were associated with increased levels of family routine as reported by caregivers. These results highlight the important roles relationships with God and other church members may play in supporting the lives of low-income African American parents and their children.

Use of social media creates positive or negative impacts on adolescents. There are a number of factors enabling adolescents to make use of social media positively. One of the factors studied in this research is the adolescent worldview. The adolescent worldview greatly determines the way she behaves and her attitude towards social media. The result of this research shows that adolescent worldview may release and enables her to reject negative impacts of social media, particularly from modern cultural -isms as relativism, individualism, emotionalism, presentism (present-time ism), materialism, autonomy, victimism, and turn it into a positive impact on herself. Worldviews may be differentiated based on three categories namely religion, spirituality and secularity. This research is conducted by explorative-qualitative approach, using case study research method. Data collection was conducted by in-depth interview with late adolescents.

Summary: Adolescents struggling against anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa often experience self-punishing thoughts and behaviors, including self-mutilation, and suicidal ideation and attempts. These arise out of the profound anguish and despair frequently experienced by these young people. This paper outlines four particularly salient clinical themes underlying this despair that have significant implications for treatment. A practice perspective is discussed which emphasizes empathic listening and the development of a strong therapeutic alliance with the adolescent. Treatment recommendations draw from narrative theory and practice, and from feminist perspectives. The paper also draws on cognitive therapy and on recent developments in the areas of spirituality and motivational enhancement. Involving the distressed adolescent's family is also addressed.

A significant number of domestic and foreign studies are devoted to the study of freedom as a mental phenomenon. Modern authors consider psychological freedom of personality mainly as effective self-determination, paying insufficient attention to its spiritual foundations and ontogenetic features of development. The following assumption was made: age peculiarities of understanding of psychological freedom of a person consist in the fact that in adolescence, high school and student age different components of psychological freedom reflect the content and manifestation of freedom, and spirituality is the basic structural component of psychological freedom, determining its content and manifestations at different age stages. The study involved 329 subjects: 105 adolescents aged 14 years, 102 high school students aged 17 years, 122 students aged 19-21 years. The results of the study allowed to describe the differences in the views of adolescents, high school students and students about freedom, age differences in the content of individual components of psychological freedom of the individual and their manifestation, the role of spirituality in the development of psychological freedom, demonstrated its decisive importance in understanding the true inner freedom.

Abstract, The present research aims at testing the impact of curriculum and instruction model towards religiosity and behavior of adolescent. Participants for the research are 634 high school students with gender percentage as following: 58% female students and 42% male students. The participants are students from Daarut Tauhid high school (SMA Daarut Tauhid) and PGII high school (SMA PGII) as representative of schools employing Islamic-based curriculum (IC), and SMA Kartika Siliwangi, SMA Negeri 23 and SMA Negeri 24 as representative of schools employing national curriculum (NC). The result of the research shows a significant difference between schools with IC and schools with NC in terms of students’ religiosity. In addition, significant difference is also found between schools with IC and schools with NC in terms of students’ spirituality. Moreover, the behavioral observation of students of schools with IC and students of schools with NC results on finding of significant difference as well. Integration of two factors—Islamic-based curriculum and boarding school model—would result on an effective and powerful aspect to develop students’ religiosity and spirituality, as well as reducing deviant and risky behavior. However, without the integration, Islamic-based curriculum itself is not a major factor in reducing deviant behavior in high school students; therefore, other potential factors should be integrated with the curriculum in playing important roles to develop students’ religiosity and spirituality and reducing deviant behavior. Keywords: Islamic-based curriculum, religiosity, spirituality, deviant or risky behavior.

Religiosity and spirituality have been considered to be protective factors of adolescent health-risk behavior (HRB). The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between adolescents’ HRB and their religiosity, taking into account their parents’ faith and their own participation in church activities. A nationally representative sample (n = 13377, 13.5 ± 1.7 years, 49.1% boys) of Czech adolescents participated in the 2018 Health Behavior in School-aged Children cross-sectional study. We measured religious attendance (RA), faith importance (FI) (both of respondents and their parents), participation in church activities and adolescent HRB (tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis use and early sexual intercourse). We found that neither RA nor FI of participants or their parents had a significant effect on adolescents’ HRB. Compared to attending respondents who participate in church activities (AP), non-attending respondents who participate in church activities were more likely to report smoking and early sexual intercourse, with odds ratios (ORs) ranging from 3.14 (1.54–6.39) to 3.82 (1.99–7.35). Compared to AP, non-attending respondents who did not participate in church activities were more likely to report early sexual intercourse, with OR = 1.90 (1.14–3.17). Thus, our findings show that RA does not protect adolescents from HRB; they suggest that RA protects adolescents from HRB only in combination with participation in church activities.

Streszczenie:
136 Background: Global beliefs and goals form a meaning system, which plays a role in adjusting to stressors like cancer. Spirituality (search for the sacred) is a meaning system that can play a role in adolescent coping, and psychosocial adjustment to chronic disease. When malignancies occur during adolescence, there are long-term consequences to adjustment, functioning, and disease self-management. Methods: Data were obtained from 126 adolescents diagnosed with cancer at various stages and 4 sites in a longitudinal pediatric advance care planning intervention trial. Scales used: demographic; 2 spiritual scales (Brief-MMRS and FACIT-Sp v4); and 2 emotional PROMIS items (anxiety and depression). Bivariate relationships were analyzed. Structural equation modeling examined the relationship between spiritual and PROMIS items. Bootstrap with 1000 resamples was applied to due to sample size. Results: Mean age was 16.9 years (range: 14-20), with a mean time since diagnosis of 77 months (range: 1-232); 21% were on active treatment. The majority were female (57%) and white (79%). Most identified as spiritual (89%) and religious (83%). When asked if they believed they will be spiritually healed from cancer by a miracle, 49% reported “yes.” Adolescents viewing cancer as God’s punishment were more likely to have high depression (p = 0.03). Very or moderately spiritual teens were more likely to have high anxiety and high depression (p = 0.02). Meaning/peace (FACIT-Sp subscale) mediated feeling God’s presence on anxiety (β = -3.5; 95% CI: -9.2, -0.48) and depression (β = -4.6; 95%CI: -10.7, -1.1); and mediated religious identification on anxiety (β = -3.1; 95%CI:-6.9, -0.6) and depression (β = -4.1; 95%CI:-9.3,-0.24). Conclusions: Our findings are consistent with adult literature and a single longitudinal study of teens with cancer: spiritual distress (cancer is God’s punishment) is associated with poorer mental health outcomes, and meaning with positive outcomes. Adolescent anxiety and depression were inversely related to feeling God’s presence, and to identifying as religious; this effect was mediated by their sense of meaning/peace. Meaning-making is a modifiable process, opening a novel focus for intervention development. Clinical trial information: NCT02693665.

Streszczenie:
<p>Adolescents consistently compare themselves with others they see on social media. This habit can bring up in them a sense of envy or inferiority, which then can lead to a decrease in self-esteem. Therefore, it is necessary to have aspects that can increase their confidence and optimism, including in term of spirituality, their sense of gratitude. The purpose of this study was to see the role of gratitude as moderating variable in the influence of social comparison on the self-esteem of social media adolescent users. The research was conducted using social comparison scale of Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale (INCOM), gratitude scale, and self-esteem state scale, which were distributed to 200 social media adolescent users in DKI Jakarta, were involved through incidental sampling. The results of data analysis showed that there was a significant role of gratitude in influencing social comparison to change these participants’ self-esteem. The sense of gratitude served to increase these adolescents’ self-esteem, which previously decreased as a result of social comparison. This study had a number of weaknesses in the use of the instruments, especially the social comparison scale. Any similar study in the future is expected to focus more on one kind of social media.</p>

Streszczenie:
In view of growing adolescent Internet addiction (IA) in the global context, there is a great need to understand the predictors of IA and design related evidence-based intervention and prevention programs. This longitudinal study investigated the relationships between Positive Youth Development (PYD) attributes and IA problems and the mediating role of life satisfaction using a large sample of Chinese high school students (N = 2648). Separated by one academic year, students completed a questionnaire evaluating their adolescent psychosocial adjustment, including validated PYD and IA measures. Multiple regression and structural equation modeling analyses were used. Consistent with the theoretical predictions of PYD models, results revealed a significant negative influence of PYD attributes on IA symptoms concurrently and longitudinally. In particular, general PYD attributes, such as emotional competence, spirituality, and resilience, showed strong and stable protective effects against IA. Life satisfaction also served as a mediator of the influence of all measures of PYD attributes on IA symptoms. The study underlines the importance of PYD attributes in promoting adolescents’ life satisfaction and preventing IA, and thus contributes to the design and implementation of evidence-based intervention and prevention programs.
