Streszczenie:
The clinical issues at the interface of ethics, religion/spirituality, and child and adolescent psychiatry are limitless. This chapter seeks to help fill the void in the literature concerning ethics, religion/spirituality, and child mental health in a way that is most helpful to practicing clinicians struggling with these issues in their daily clinical contacts. Three specific areas are addressed that commonly present challenges: (1) religious/spiritual objections to psychiatric care; (2) ethical issues surrounding the clinician’s relationship with children and families; and (3) ethical issues that may arise when mental health clinicians work with religious/spiritual professionals and institutions. Implications of religious and cultural diversity for both patients and clinicians are also discussed throughout the chapter.

Streszczenie:
The Spiritual Lives of Young African Americans unearths the ways that African American Christian youth separate their lives and spirituality into mutually exclusive categories, with the result that their religious beliefs and practices do not directly impact their experiences of communal and systemic injustices. Yet this work argues that youth can and do teach the church and society myriad lessons through their theological reflections and actions. This book takes seriously the harsh realities of African American youth, who are often marginalized and even dehumanized within society and religious institutions. It draws upon in-depth theological reflection with adolescents and recent research on adolescent spirituality to examine the crucial role of spirituality in adolescent identity formation and the practical ways that youth negotiate the world around them. Listening to the voices of young African Americans, including activist and poets, pushes us to consider specific examples of fragmentation, including how young African Americans can reconcile their faith in God with their experiences of police brutality and ongoing violence. In conversation with young African Americans, this book also mines the resources of African American religious and theological traditions, and shows how collectively they can help youth to navigate fragmentation and respond to systemic injustice. In particular, abundant life, or choosing the way of life abundant, offers a vision of life and hope for young people who are too often surrounded by death. This work concludes with a critical pedagogy for integrating spirituality and fostering abundant life with African American youth.

Streszczenie:
Previous chapters have outlined the fragmented spirituality, beliefs, and practices of African American youth. This chapter assesses and affirms these as the building blocks of a more robust spirituality. Building on the work of Womanist theologians, this chapter articulates key theological concepts that are essential in helping African American youth resist and transcend the negative effects of spiritual fragmentation. Womanist public theology and reorientation of adolescent spirituality to communal ends does not necessarily reduce spirituality to political action. This chapter suggests approaches to participating in public theological reflection and action to help youth leverage their religious convictions and ideals to work for the common good.

Streszczenie:
Fragmented spirituality among African American adolescents has been fostered and shaped in US society and African American churches, amid sometimes inadequate theology and pedagogy. However, the text concludes with the assertions that young African Americans are both in need of a vision of abundant life and capable of integrating spirituality. These young people have not given up on churches or on the importance of spirituality in their lives. However, many still do not know or believe that churches exist that value their voices and their lived realities. Therefore, churches and concerned adults must respond by working with youth to live life abundantly.

Streszczenie:
Building upon the research of religious educator Evelyn Parker, this chapter traces the causes, signs, and consequences of spiritual fragmentation among African American adolescents. Overwhelmingly, survey data reveal that young people do experience God as loving, active, and transformative. Fragmented spirituality occurs when young people— even and especially those who are highly active in their communities—are unable to imagine how their communal, societal, and political concerns are attended by that same loving, active, and transformative personal God. Sample data of sermons and Sunday school curricula reveal the dearth of attention given in African American churches to young people in helping them interpret and address their experiences and concerns. This contributes to spiritual fragmentations as young people seek resources for interpreting their experiences and concerns outside and apart from the religious arena.

Streszczenie:
Young African Americans regularly experience racism, poverty, sexism, violence, and other affronts to their humanity. Though they are often highly active and vocal contributors to their churches, schools, and neighborhood communities, they are often silent about the possibility of God working to address the injustices in their lives. The disconnection between the issues young people face, their community involvement, and their conceptions of God point toward the pervasiveness of “fragmented” spirituality among African American youth. Spiritual fragmentation does not necessarily inhibit healthy development or functioning. However, the African American community and church are at risk if they fail to challenge the myth that the personal and the communal or the spiritual and political are in fact disconnected. But why are African American Christian adolescents experiencing spiritual fragmentation? Is spiritual fragmentation symptomatic of an irreparable chasm between the Black church and Black youth? Or are there other factors at play?

Streszczenie:
Black. Queer. Southern. Women.: An Oral History reveals how identity is made through race, gender, sexuality, class, and region. In particular, it centers the life stories of more than seventy Black, queer women from the U.S. South. With their lives and experiences as the focus, E. Patrick Johnson recasts a singular narrative of the South and illustrates the plurality of Black queer women’s identities. He also puts the complexity of Black female sexuality on display, drawing out multiple themes—childhood and adolescence; mother-daughter relationships; gender performances; religion and spirituality; sexual desires; dating and intimacy; and creative and political work. The interdisciplinary work blends oral history and performance ethnography methods to emphasize the rich tapestry of these women’s lives and give texture to their narratives. The book is divided into two parts. Part one, “G.R.I.T.S.: Stories of Growing Up Black, Female, and Queer,” is comprised of seven chapters and organized thematically, pulling out portions of women’s narratives that speak to each subject. Part two, “My Soul Looks Back and Wonders: Stories of Perseverance and Hope,” is comprised of six chapters, each of which delves into an individual woman’s narrative. Taken together, the sections reflect Johnson’s careful attention to the tension between history and biography; the structural and the interpersonal; the collective and the individual.
