Streszczenie:
Series capacitors offer considerable technical and economical advantages in long distance a.c. transmission. In particular, their excellent reliability and minimal maintenance requirements make series compensation the most cost effective method of enhancing the power transfer capability of an existing or proposed interconnection. E.H.V. lines employing series capacitors however, pose difficult problems for the line protection relays, not encountered with plain feeders. One important cause of these problems is the resonance between the series capacitor and the line series inductance, which in turn imposes a sub-synchronous oscillation on the system signals. Also, the rapid changes in the circuit parameters, resulting from the operation of the capacitor protection equipment, namely the spark gaps, introduce some difficulties for the line protection schemes, especially an impedance measuring relay. These spark gaps are installed in parallel with the series capacitors to prevent the development of very high voltages across the capacitor which could cause excessive damage to the equipment. The work presented herein describes a new digital distance relay suitable for series compensated line applications. The errors in the impedance measurement for a phase to earth fault when the spark gaps do not flash over, are discussed and new methods are proposed to compensate for these errors. The new concept of a complex residual compensation factor, as opposed to a real one, is also discussed. A new adaptive filtering is incorporated in the relay in order to minimise the detrimental effect of the subsynchronous oscillation on the relay decision logic. Finally, the relay is thoroughly tested for many different system configurations, to fully evaluate the relay response.

Streszczenie:
Recently, the internet traffic demand has been compoundly rising up as a result of the increase in the number of users as well as data demand per user. That is why, Elastic Optical Networks (EONs), which employ Orthongonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , have been proposed to scale the demands by efficiently utilizing the spectrum as they provide finer spectrum granularity and distance adaptive modulation formatting. Not only efficiency and scalability but also survivability of the network is significant since even a single-link failure may cause huge volume of data considering that even a channel bandwidth may vary between 1 Gb/s and 1Tb/s. Hence, we propose a heuristic algorithm to increase the spectrum efficiency in EONs employing Shared Path Protection (SPP) as the recovery scheme provided that the traffic demand is dynamic and the modulation format is distance adaptive. Our algorithm, Primary First-Fit Modified Backup Last-Fit (PF-MBL), follows two step approach for Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA). In the first step, k-shortest path algorithm is applied and candidates paths are found regardless of spectrum availability for routing. In the second step, spectrum is assigned to working paths and backup paths starting from the different ends of the links’ frequency domain so as to group working and backup path resources separately. In working path spectrum assignment, First-Fit strategy is employed. In backup path spectrum assignment, the algorithm chooses a path according to a formula among candidate paths with available spectrum widths found by Last-Fit strategy. In this manner, we expect to provide less fragmented spectrum for backup paths as well as the network, thereby increasing their sharability and thus the spectrum efficiency. We compare our algorithm and the two current solutions by simulations. Results show that PF-MBL can improve the performance in terms of blocking and bandwidth blocking probability by 24% up to 59% compared to the current outperforming algorithm when the bandwidth acceptance ratio of the system varies from 90% to 99.9% in different loads. Moreover, it achieves between 41% to 59% savings over the current outperforming algorithm when the bandwidth acceptance ratio of the system varies from 99% to 99.9%.

Streszczenie:
The increasing demand for electricity over the last few decades has not been followed by adequate growth in electric infrastructure. As a result, the reliability and safety of the electric grids are facing tremendously growing pressure. Large blackouts in the recent past indicate that sustaining system reliability and integrity turns out to be more and more difficult due to reduced transmission capacity margins and increased stress on the system. Due to the heavy loading conditions that occur when the system is under stress, the protection systems are susceptible to mis-operation. It is under such severe situations that the network cannot afford to lose its critical elements like the main generation units and transmission corridors.

In addition to the slow but steady variations in the network structure over a long term, the grid also experiences drastic changes during the occurrence of a disturbance. One of the main reasons why protection relays mis-operate is due to the inability of the relays to adjust to the evolving network scenario. Such failures greatly compound the severity of the disturbance, while diminishing network integrity leading to catastrophic system-wide outages. With the advancement of Wide Area Measurement Systems (WAMS), it is now possible to redesign network protection schemes to make them more adaptive and thus improve the security of the system.

Often flagged for exacerbating the events leading to a blackout, the back-up distance protection relay scheme for transmission line protection and the loss-of-field relay scheme for generator unit protection can be greatly improved from an adaptability-oriented redesign. Protection schemes in general would benefit from a power re-distribution technique that helps predict generator outputs immediately after the occurrence of a contingency.

This research presents the development of an adaptive digital distance protection system by a multi-agent system (MAS). This MAS will work in a distributed way, with expert entities (agents) inserted in specific places and acting efficiently in the solution of local problems. With the application of the MAS, the distance relays will have desirable characteristics, which are difficult to be reached by conventional techniques. Among the deficiencies observed in conventional protection systems, there is the insensitivity to the dynamics of the electrical power system due to changes in operating conditions. So, there is the necessity of a protection system which is more flexible, selective and effcient to assure reliability and continuity in the electricity supply. To improve these characteristics, several computational simulations were done using alternative transients program (ATP) to generate the desirable adaptive operation curves. These curves, when inserted into a database, will represent the expected changes in the operating conditions of an electrical system. For the implementation and validation of this approach, several tests were done with the purpose of comparison of this approach (using MAS) to the traditional philosophy of distance protection. The results obtained are promising and demonstrate a highly satisfactory degree of accuracy and reliability of the proposed method.

Power electronics-based devices, known as FACTS devices (Flexible Alternating current Transmission Systems) allow to increase transmission capacity by decreasing the safety margin required for a secure operation of the Electric Power System (EPS). It is possible without need to build new lines, allowing to control the flows in lines and thus allowing contracts between the transmission companies are respected. Among the FACTS devices, the most versatile is the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) capable of controlling three variables of the system. However, the inclusion of these devices brings other problems to the EPS, one of them, the transmission lines protection. This Thesis presents a contribution to a new mathematical formulation, adaptive and compensated for the distance protection based on the apparent impedance to protect transmission lines compensated by UPFC devices. The proposed formulation is based on a three-phase frame reference and the compensation of apparent impedance by the UPFC controlled parameters and the estimation of the fault impedance. Results obtained, through the comprehensive simulation of faults, show that it formulation present excellent performance for distance protection of transmission lines compensated by UPFC devices.

Streszczenie:
The protection of transmission lines is an imperative task to achieve a smooth transmission of power through transmission lines. There are several factors that affect the performance of these systems. The occurrence of faults is the most common reason of instability of power system. The detection and elimination of the faults is significant in order that the system remains reliable and stable. To this end, A literature survey is performed and it is observed that a number of techniques have been designed to protect the transmission lines. The relays are the most commonly used devices and amongst them distance protection is the suitable method to be applied on power systems. Further with the growing technology, FACT devices are introduced in this field to improve the protection method. There are number of FACT devices that are being used, however, many relays have the capability of protecting the model in effective way. The amalgamation of relays and FACT devices give better performance as per the survey. The most commonly used FACT device is UPFC. It is being widely used in the power systems to inject the power without causing any trouble to the system. In a recent study, UPFC is utilized with distance protection method and the results were considered effective. However, the system can be optimized by introducing the optimization algorithms. It is the best approach to obtain the optimal solution. Thus this dissertation presents the designing and development of a novel adaptive method. Different algorithms are studied and Grey wolf optimization is applied on the existing work so that the pulse can be automatically generated by the optimization algorithm and UPFC can easily operate them to inject power into the system and provide protection from the unnecessary faults. The simulation of the model is done in MATLAB software and the effectiveness of the model is determined by measuring impedance and fitness function. The comparison with existing approach ensured that the GWO based UPFC model outperformed the results of UPFC.

This chapter presents a new method for loss of excitation (LOE) faults detection in hydro-generators using adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The investigations were done under a complete loss of excitation conditions, and a partial loss of excitation conditions in different generator loading conditions. In this chapter, four different techniques are discussed according to the type of inputs to the proposed ANFIS unit, the generator terminal impedance measurements (R and X) and the generator terminal voltage and phase current (Vtrms and Ia), the positive sequence components of the generator terminal voltage magnitude, phase current magnitude and angle (│V+ve│, │I+ve│ and ∟I+ve) in addition to the stator current 3rd harmonics components (magnitudes and angles). The proposed techniques' results are compared with each other and are compared with the conventional distance relay response in addition to other techniques. The promising obtained results show that the proposed technique is efficient.
