Successful and creative plant-breeding work in a stock-raising is based on the estimation of genetic potential of separate breeds, herds and individuals, that is impossible without thorough genetic- populations knowledge. Knowledge of features of caryotype gives an opportunity objectively to estimate the breeds of animals taking into account their population-cytogenetic features, that assists more complete idea about the evolution of breeds. However such important agricultural object, as a domestic sheep, remains cytogenetic poorly studied, especially in a population-cytogenetic aspect.In literature different breeds have small information about frequency and spectrum of the inherited anomalies and populations of sheep. Most chromosomal and genic anomalies of sheep in general not research, although for practice of plant-breeding work necessary knowledge of reasons of their appearance. Caryotype of sheep is presented by 54 chromosomes, from them 26 pairs of autsom and one pair of sexual chromosomes (ХХ or ХУ). Three pairs of large metacentric and 23 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes of different size enter in the complement of autsom. For sheep as well as for other animals characteristic chromosomal polymorphism as a numerical varying of chromosomes in caryotype (aneuploidi and poliploidi), morphological aberations and associations of separate chromosomes. Chromosomal anomalies of sheep are reason of forming of nonviable gamet, that results in death of embryos on the early stages, and, as a result, to the considerable economic losses in economies. The facts of chromosomal aberation educed for sheep testify to the necessity of cytogenetic control of tribal animals, especially rams, with the aim of exposure of animals-transmitters of undesirable changes in caryotype and exception of them from a plant-breeding process.

Mercury and its derivatives have become an alarming environmental problem, necessitating the search for effective antagonists, including homeopathic drugs, which are generally used in micro doses and are devoid of any palpable side-effects. On the basis of homeopathic similia principle, two potencies ofMercurius solubilis(Merc Sol-30 and Merc Sol-200) were tested by three administrative modes, i.e. pre-feeding, post-feeding and combined pre- and post-feeding, for their possible efficacy in ameliorating mercuric chloride-induced genotoxicity in mice. Healthy mice,Mus musculus, were intraperitoneally injected with 0.06% solution of mercuric chloride at the rate of 1 ml/100 g of body weight, and assessed for genotoxic effects through conventional endpoints. i.e. chromosome aberrations, micronuclei, mitotic index and sperm head abnormality, keeping suitable controls. Mercuric chloride-treated mice were divided into three sub-groups, which were orally administered with the drug prior to, after and both prior to and after injection of mercuric chloride, and their genotoxic effects were analysed at specific intervals of fixation. Mercuric chloride treatment generally produced more chromosome aberations, micronuclei and sperm head anomaly in mice, but the mitotic index appeared to be slightly reduced. While chromosome aberations, micronuclei and sperm head anomaly were generally reduced in the drug-fed series, the mitotic index showed an apparent increase. In most cases, the combined pre- and post-feeding mode appeared to show the maximum amelioration, followed by post-feeding and pre-feeding, in that order. The amelioration by Merc Sol-200 appeared to be slightly more pronounced. We conclude that potentized homeopathic drugs can serve as possible anti-genotoxic agents against specific environmental mutagens, including toxic heavy metals.

AbstractHigh resolution spectroscopy will be an important diagnostic tool in future X-ray astronomy. SPEKTROSAT, the follow-up mission to ROSAT will be equipped with a transmission grating spectrometer with a spectral resolution of 0.2 Å over the wavelength range between 6 Å and 300 Å. Third order aberations are minimized by a mounting of the grating elements according to the Rowland-torus geometry. The ROSAT mirror system will be slightly changed by a redesign of the optical stops in order to reduce the field of view. The Focal Instrumentation has to be modified for a better match with the spectroscopic requirements. Since SPEKTROSAT is almost identical to ROSAT, this concept offers a large amount of science at relatively low costs. Its limiting line sensitivity will be about 20 times better than that of the EINSTEIN-OGS.

Bacground/Aim. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma accounts for 5-17% non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). The molecular pathogenesis of MALT lymphomas is not well-established. The aim of this study was to evaluate immunohistochemically determined nuclear coexpression of BCL10 and NF-kappaB (NF-?B) in tumor cells of gastric MALT lymphoma and its impact on the patogenesis and outcome of the disease. Methods. Medical records of 35 patients with newly diagnosed gastric MALT lymphoma were analyzed and biopsy specimens were immunostained for BCL10 and NF-kB expression (p65 subunit). Results. The median age of 35 patients diagnosed with gastric MALT lymphoma was 63.5 years (male/female = 21/14). Symptoms were present in 23/35 (65.7%) patients with the weight loss as the most common symptom. Gastric MALT lymphomas were usually localized in the stomach corpus and corpus and antrum (45.7% and 31.2%, respectively). H. pylori infection was confirmed in 20 out of 30 (66.7%) patients. Treatment options were as follows: immunochemotherapy in 10 (28.5%) patients, surgery in 9 (25.8%) patients, combined surgery and chemotherapy in 14 (40%) patients and supportive measures in 2 (5.7%) patients. Complete remission was achieved in 13 (37.1%) patients and partial remission in two (5.7%) patients. Sixteen (45.7%) patients had disease progression (p < 0.001). Cytoplasmatic expression of BCL10 in tumor cells was detected in 19 (54.3%) specimens. Nuclear expression was detected in no specimen. Cytoplasmic expression of NF-?B was present in 22 (65.7%) specimens, but nuclear expression was not detected in any specimens. Conclusion. Nuclear expressions (activation) of NF-?B p65 subunit and BCL10 were not detected in specimens of gastric MALT lymphoma. The correlation of nuclear coexpression of BCL10 and NF-?B in gastric MALT lymphoma was not established. These results indicate that other mechanisms and signal pathways are active in lymphogenesis of gastric MALT lymphoma, as that apoptotic inhibition is not the main, nor the only mechanism in tumorogenesis.

The Screen Test (Americana/Australiana) project is a collection of works that re-makes selected fragments of film spanning cinema history. Through a process of selectively slowing and stilling this form, of what Laura Mulvey calls Delayed Cinema, opens up new possibilities for interpreting and understanding cinema and the photographic. The aesthetic qualities and repetition of the scene or shot are re-created and re-performed, allowing an alternate form of cinema to take place. This alternate cinema takes on the characteristic of the Hollywood screen test and thus we can see each piece as the artist performing the screen test for each film. However, over time the screen test becomes the site for shifting the aesthetic elements within the film and shaping the narrative as a form of aesthetic building block. The viewing of each fragment allows for a new reading of film that suspends or subverts the temporal narrative and allows the contained segment to exist outside of the film opening up the possibility of constructing and emphasizing new iconic images and meanings. Each video piece is supplemented with a photographic still in tableaux form that further explores the aesthetic material of the film or shot raising the aesthetic components of the film ( props, locations etc) to the level of fetishism that may have been missed in the original version. This photographic rendering of the film fragment rethinks the possibilities of photographic tableaux and its relation to the iconic and indexical of photomedia art practice. Similarly, each photographic work is informed by theories of film analysis and psychology that has examined the primacy of the film still with Freudian notions of the primal scene and the uncanny. We are after all bringing to life the graveyard of cinema history. These photographic qualities of the mis en scene and the indexical of metonymy allow a heightened aesthetic experience, which transforms itself into an aberration of the director’s intended meaning, thereby reconstructing this meaning within the context of camp humour and irony. The work also acts as a playful and absurd interpretation of the cult of celebrity within cinema and the art world, which frees up of the interpretation of the film’s meaning and becomes the site for contemporary re-readings of film culture. The juxtaposition of the American Hollywood film and its emphasis on studio lighting, props, character and dialogue against the outdoor location of the Australian films conflates the two cultural imperatives, allowing for the examination of cultural myth through cinema. American cinema is revealed as the dominant culture whose imperialism dogs Australian film and fosters a culture of low self-esteem. Further, the Americana works become the site for cultural examinations of gender, narcissism and war - both real and imagined – and Hollywood is explored in terms of its social imaginings and how they play into real life events. The Australiana component explores the mythology of the Australian landscape with an emphasis on the culture of masculinity and self-destructive violence. However, each work is the result of a conflation of both cultures and other films, or parts of the same film, shifted within the fragment. The production of each photographic and video piece requires the taking on of the role of director, cinematographer, actor and producer. Through the use of interactive technologies such as DVD and the Internet not only am I able to experience a new subjective relationship with the intricacies of cinema but also by recreating these cinematic fragments I am able to bring into being and transform the spectre of cinema into the realm of contemporary art practice.

Si dans les caméras actuelles, les matrices de photodétection sont planes, dans la nature, aucune surface focale n'est plane : la rétine est soit concave (œil humain), soit convexe (œil d'insecte). Ces architectures offrent deux solutions de miniaturisation et de simplification des systèmes de détection, qui ont fait l'objet des travaux de cette thèse. La courbure concave du détecteur permet de supprimer l'aberration de courbure de champ qui est particulièrement présente dans les instruments grand champ. L'étude théorique de cette solution, étayée par des applications concrètes, a permis de démontrer la simplification des architectures accessibles par cette approche, ainsi que les améliorations en termes de performances optiques. La courbure convexe permet quant à elle de miniaturiser les systèmes grand champ, en s'inspirant de l'œil composé des petits invertébrés. Cette architecture, constituée de groupes de pixels reliés par une métallisation souple, a été réalisée sur une matrice de détecteurs infrarouge en CdHgTe. Les composants obtenus sont fonctionnels et comparables en termes de performances aux valeurs standard. Ils ouvrent à la voie à des architectures grand champ extrêmement compactes. L'originalité du travail a porté sur la mise en forme sphérique de composants monolithiques, dont la couche active n'est pas modifiée, permettant ainsi de produire des systèmes avec un taux de remplissage de 100%. Après une étude de la souplesse d'échantillons de silicium aminci, le procédé de courbure a été transféré sur des composants fonctionnels: circuit de lecture Si-CMOS et matrice de micro-bolomètres infrarouge. La courbure concave des matrices de détection infrarouge de type micro-bolomètres, a mené à la réalisation de deux caméras. La première, constituée de deux lentilles du commerce, a permis de comparer les systèmes composés des détecteurs plan et courbe. Le gain lié à la courbure sphérique de la rétine sur l'uniformité de la réponse impulsionnelle a été prouvé grâce aux mesures de la fonction de transfert de contrastes (FTC). Enfin, à l'image d'un œil humain, un œil infrarouge composé d'une seule lentille et d'une matrice de micro-bolomètres courbée en concave a été réalisée. La qualité des images obtenues, ainsi que la FTC mesurée, ont mis en évidence le potentiel des plans focaux courbés pour des systèmes ultra-compacts, inenvisageables jusqu'à ce jour.

Recent knowledge suggests that the onset of cancer is modulated by the interplay of internal and external environmental factors along with numerous gene variants. Structural chromsomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes are considered as biomarkers of effect of genotoxic carcinogens and reflect elevated risk of cancer. Incomplete or deficient repair of double-strand breaks in DNA underlie chromosomal aberrations and the measurement of cytogenetic alterations may reflect interindividual differences in the response towards the mutagen. In this study the expected deficiences in the DNA repair capacity have been determined in incident oncological patients with breast, colorectal and urogenital cancers. The determination of chromosomal aberrations have been supplemented by the measurement of variants in genes involved in double-strand breaks repair (XRCC3, rs861539; RAD54L, rs1048771). Methodologically, we employed conventional cytogenetic analysis, cytogenetic analysis following the induction of chromocomal damage by bleomycin ("Challenge assay"), TaqMan discrimination analysis for the detection of allelic variants and statistical analyses. As EUV lithography progresses from laboratory research to prototype development the realistic performance of manufacturable components becomes a primary concern. Nowhere is this more evident than in the fabrication and implementation of the EUV imaging optics. It is now well understood that the structure of the optical surfaces and the multilayer coatings (ML) that make the surfaces reflective at soft x-ray wavelengths must be specified and fabricated with unprecedented accuracy. Errors in the structure, which include deviations in the surface profile of the substrate and unintentional variations in the multilayer period, cause aberations in the imaging process. When these errors are at very long spatial wavelengths they are treated deterministically, and can be evaluated (and hence corrected) using interferometric methods now under development. However, there are errors in the surface profile at all spatial frequencies. Describing the exact structure of the surfaces of the optics at all spatial scalelengths is an intractable problem. Instead the surface figure errors at mid- and high-spatial frequency (called “roughness” or “finish”) are treated statistically. Within this statistical description, the effect of surface (and multilayer) roughness is to remove intensity from the image (the specular field) and scatter it throughout the image field. This nonspecular scattering is problematic for two reasons: (1) it decreases the useful throughput of the optical system and, (2) it produces a backround halo which reduces the contrast of the image. In this paper we describe a method of relating the nonspecular scattering to the roughness of the optical surfaces in a distributed EUVL imaging system. Our ultimate goal is to develop a robust specification of surface finish that can be used as the guideline for manufacturing EUV optics.

Particle collisions driven by turbulent fluctuations play a key role in such diverse problems as cloud formation, aerosol powder manufacturing and inhalation drug therapy to name a few. In all of these examples (and many others) turbulent fluctuations increase the rate of collisions relative to the background collision rate driven by Brownian motion. Furthermore, turbulence can spontaneously generate very large fluctuations in the particle concentration field. This “clustering” is caused by the inertial mismatch between the heavy particles and the lighter surrounding gas; vortices in the flow “centrifuge” the heavier particles out of vortex cores and into the straining regions that lie in between the vortices. Because collision is a binary process, concentration fluctuations further enhance the turbulent coagulation rate by as much as two orders of magnitude. An effect of this size must be accounted for in a rational model of turbulent coagulation. Sundaram & Collins (J. Fluid Mech. 1997) showed that the radial distribution function (RDF) of the particle population, evaluated at contact, precisely corrects the collision kernel for clustering. Subsequent work has explored the dependence of the RDF on the system parameters (e.g., particle size, concentration, response time and Reynolds number) using direct numerical simulations. These results have improved our understanding and ability to predict the effect of the first three parameters; however, owing to the limited range of Reynolds number that can be reached in a numerical simulation, questions remain over the scaling of the RDF with Reynolds number. This is a critical issue for high-Reynolds-number applications such as cloud physics, where values of the Reynolds number can be 1–2 orders of magnitude greater than can be simulated. We will present our highest Reynolds number simulations to date and show our attempts to resolve this issue. Recently, the ability to measure three-dimensional particle positions using holography has been realized (e.g., Meng & Pu, J. Opt. Soc. Am. 2003). With holography, the optical image that is produced contains fringes that, upon inverting the laser, reproduce the original image in three dimensions. The hologram can then be scanned using a digital camera to obtain the particle positions. An important consideration with this study is the need to differentiate individual particles. We developed a search algorithm that locates particle centers, even in the presence of optical aberations and speckle noise. The algorithm has been used to obtain the first experimental RDF measurements to date. Thus far we see good agreement between the experimentally obtained RDF and the simulations. Besides validating the simulations, experiments can span a much broader range of Reynolds numbers, providing critical data that may help resolve the open questions associated with this parameter.
