Streszczenie:
On a beef carcass, Escherichia coli may sequentially encounter acid- and heat-intervention steps. This study tested whether acid stress (1.5% [vol/vol] acetic acid, pH 4.0, 37°C, 15 min) would enhance subsequent heat resistance of E. coli. Initially, cells (E. coli O157:H7 ATCC 43894, nonpathogenic E. coli B [strain FRIK-124], and rpoS-deficient mutant 813-6 [derived from E. coli O157:H7 ATCC 43895]) were acid stressed and transferred to 54°C tiypticase soy broth (TSB), and survivors were immediately enumerated after at least three intervals of 12, 2, and 6 min, respectively, by plating. The ATCC 43894 and 813-6 strains survived the acid stress but strain FRIK-124 did not. Acid-stressed ATCC 43894 had significantly lower D values than the non-acid-stressed controls. Strain 813-6 had significantly lower D values than strain ATCC 43894, with no significant difference between acid-stressed and non-acid-stressed cells. In a second experiment, cooling of cells prior to plating resulted in an increased D value for acid-stressed ATCC 43894 cells, such that it was not significantly different from the D value for non-acid-stressed Controls. Using this protocol, there was no significant difference in D values between acid-stressed and non-acid-stressed ATCC 43894 cells in prewarmed TSB (54, 58, and 62°C), in prewarmed ground beef slurry (GBS; 58°C), or in TSB and GBS inoculated at 5°C and heated to 58°C. The acid stress tested does not enhance subsequent heat resistance of E. coli.

ABSTRACT We report on the discovery and validation of TOI 813 b (TIC 55525572 b), a transiting exoplanet identified by citizen scientists in data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the first planet discovered by the Planet Hunters TESS project. The host star is a bright (V = 10.3 mag) subgiant ($R_\star =1.94\, R_\odot$, $M_\star =1.32\, M_\odot$). It was observed almost continuously by TESS during its first year of operations, during which time four individual transit events were detected. The candidate passed all the standard light curve-based vetting checks, and ground-based follow-up spectroscopy and speckle imaging enabled us to place an upper limit of $2\, M_{\rm Jup}$ (99 per cent confidence) on the mass of the companion, and to statistically validate its planetary nature. Detailed modelling of the transits yields a period of $83.8911 _{ - 0.0031 } ^ { + 0.0027 }$ d, a planet radius of 6.71 ± 0.38 R⊕ and a semimajor axis of $0.423 _{ - 0.037 } ^ { + 0.031 }$ AU. The planet’s orbital period combined with the evolved nature of the host star places this object in a relatively underexplored region of parameter space. We estimate that TOI 813 b induces a reflex motion in its host star with a semi-amplitude of ∼6 m s−1, making this a promising system to measure the mass of a relatively long-period transiting planet.

AbstractThe BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine is highly effective against SARS-CoV-2. However, apprehension exists that variants of concern (VOCs) may evade vaccine protection, due to evidence of reduced neutralization of the VOCs B.1.1.7 and B.1.351 by vaccine sera in laboratory assays. We performed a matched cohort study to examine the distribution of VOCs in infections of BNT162b2 mRNA vaccinees from Clalit Health Services (Israel) using viral genomic sequencing, and hypothesized that if vaccine effectiveness against a VOC is reduced, its proportion among breakthrough cases would be higher than in unvaccinated controls. Analyzing 813 viral genome sequences from nasopharyngeal swabs, we showed that vaccinees who tested positive at least 7 days after the second dose were disproportionally infected with B.1.351, compared with controls. Those who tested positive between 2 weeks after the first dose and 6 days after the second dose were disproportionally infected by B.1.1.7. These findings suggest reduced vaccine effectiveness against both VOCs within particular time windows. Our results emphasize the importance of rigorously tracking viral variants, and of increasing vaccination to prevent the spread of VOCs.

Background and Objective: Chemokine (C-C motif) ligand (CCL)2, the prototype Th2 chemokine, is secreted by tumor cells, and has growth promoting effects. Whether CCL2 protumorigenic activities will be validated, then CCL2 and its receptor CCR2 may be therapeutic targets in cancer. Methods: We tested in “primary human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) cells” (ANA) versus “normal thyroid follicular cells” (TFC): a) CCL2 secretion basally, after IFN-γ and/or TNF-α stimulation; b) PPARγ activation by thiazolidinediones (TZDs), rosiglitazone or pioglitazone, on CCL2 secretion, and on proliferation and apoptosis in ANA. Results: ANA produced basally CCL2, at a higher level versus TFC. IFN-γ or TNF-α dose-dependently induced the CCL2 release in 3/6 or 5/6 ANA, respectively, but in all TFC. IFN-γ+TNF-α induced a synergistic release of CCL2 in all TFC, but only in 1/6 ATC. TZDs exerted an inhibition of CCL2 release in 3/6 ANA, while had no effect in TFC. Pioglitazone inhibition of ANA proliferation was not associated with the effect on CCL2; NF-κB and ERK1/2 were basally activated in ANA, increased by IFN-γ+TNF-α, and pioglitazone inhibited IFN- γ+TNF-α activation. CCL2 serum levels were higher in 6 ATC patients than in 5 controls (813±345 versus 345±212, pg/mL; respectively; P<0.01, ANOVA). Conclusion: ANA produce CCL2 basally and after cytokines stimulation, with an extremely variable pattern of modulation, suggesting different types of deregulation in the chemokine modulation. Serum CCL2 is increased in ATC patients. Further studies will be necessary to evaluate if CCL2 might be used as a marker in the followup of ATC patients.

Lymphocyte subsets significantly change during childhood; thus, age-matched reference values derived from healthy children are crucial. We established reference values for lymphocyte subsets, including T cells (CD3+), CD4 T cells (CD3 + CD4+), CD8 T cells (CD3 + CD8+), double negative T (DNT) cells (CD3 + CD4-CD8-), B cells (CD3-CD19+), NK cells (CD3-CD56+), and NKT-like cells (CD3 + CD56+) in the peripheral blood of 813 healthy children. We used the method of the international standard document (Clinical Laboratory Standard Institute C28-A3) to establish reference intervals with a single platform. First, we used the Skewness and Kurtosis test to analyze the normality of the data. The nonnormally distributed data was transformed into approximately normal distribution by the Box-Cox transformation. Second, we used the Tukey’s method to eliminate outliers. Further, all the subjects were grouped into subgroups according to sex (male and female) and age (0–1 month, 2–12 months, 1–3 years, 4–6 years, and 7–18 years). We used the standard normal deviation test ( Z -test) to evaluate whether age and sex were possible grouping factors. The analyses indicated age to be an important factor associated with changes in lymphocyte subsets. The absolute number of lymphocyte subsets and total number of lymphocytes, T cells, CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells, and B cells gradually increase from birth to 12 months and then gradually decrease with age. Furthermore, CD4 T cells and the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ gradually decrease with age. In contrast, CD8 T and DNT cells gradually increase with age. The percentage and number of NK and NKT-like cells gradually increase with age and remain stable between 1 and 18 years of age. In conclusion, the age-related reference intervals established in healthy children in this study can aid in monitoring and assessing the changes in immune levels in diseased conditions.

Aims This systematic review asked which patterns of complications are associated with the three reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) prosthetic designs, as classified by Routman et al, in patients undergoing RTSA for the management of cuff tear arthropathy, massive cuff tear, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. The three implant design philosophies investigated were medial glenoid/medial humerus (MGMH), medial glenoid/lateral humerus (MGLH), and lateral glenoid/medial humerus (LGMH). Methods A systematic review of the literature was performed via a search of MEDLINE and Embase. Two reviewers extracted data on complication occurrence and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). Meta-analysis was conducted on the reported proportion of complications, weighted by sample size, and PROMs were pooled using the reported standardized mean difference (SMD). Quality of methodology was assessed using Wylde’s non-summative four-point system. The study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42020193041). Results A total of 42 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Rates of scapular notching were found to be significantly higher in MGMH implants (52% (95% confidence interval (CI) 40 to 63)) compared with MGLH ((18% (95% CI 6 to 34)) and LGMH (12% (95% CI 3 to 26)). Higher rates of glenoid loosening were seen in MGMH implants (6% (95% CI 3 to 10)) than in MGLH implants (0% (95% CI 0 to 2)). However, strength of evidence for this finding was low. No significant differences were identified in any other complication, and there were no significant differences observed in PROMs between implant philosophies. Conclusion This systematic review has found significant improvement in PROMS and low complication rates across the implant philosophies studied. Scapular notching was the only complication found definitely to have significantly higher prevalence with the MGMH implant design. Cite this article: Bone Joint J 2021;103-B(5):813–821.

Abstract Abstract 2330 In vivo T cell depletion with anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) or alemtuzumab (anti-CD52) before reduced intensity allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) in combination with in vitro T cell depletion with alemtuzumab reduces the risk of GVHD. Detectable levels of circulating antibodies are present up to several months after the alloSCT, leading to a delayed immune reconstitution which is associated with an increased incidence of opportunistic infections and early relapses. Prior to 2007, combined in vitro (Alemtuzumab 20 mg added “to the bag”) and in vivo T cell depletion with horse-derived ATG (h-ATG) resulted in good engraftment without GVHD in the absence of GVHD prophylaxis after reduced intensity alloSCT using conditioning with fludarabine and busulphan. Due to the unavailability of h-ATG, rabbit-derived ATG (r-ATG) 10–14 mg/kg was introduced in the conditioning regimen in 2007. Strikingly, in this cohort of patients, early EBV reactivation and EBV-associated post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) was observed in 10 out of 18 patients at a median time of 6 weeks after alloSCT (range 5 to 11 weeks) in the absence of GVHD or immunosuppressive treatment. Analysis of T and B cell recovery early after transplantation revealed preferential depletion of T cells as compared to B cells, thereby allowing unrestricted proliferation of EBV infected B cells. Due to this unacceptable high incidence of EBV-related complications, in the conditioning regimen r-ATG was replaced by low dose alemtuzumab (15 mg i.v. day -4 and -3) in 2008. In this cohort of 60 patients, only 2 patients experienced transient EBV reactivation during the first 3 months after alloSCT and one patient developed an EBV-associated lymphoma 4 weeks after alloSCT. To investigate the mechanisms underlying the low incidence of EBV reactivation using alemtuzumab for T cell depletion, we studied the in vivo and in vitro effects of alemtuzumab on different lymphocyte subsets. First, lineage-specific reconstitution was studied in 20 patients from the alemtuzumab cohort with known CD52 negative diseases (11 AML and 9 multiple myeloma) to exclude the confounding effect of antibody absorption by malignant cells. Whereas at 3 weeks after alloSCT detectable numbers of circulating NK cells and T cells were observed (medians 71 (range 6–378), and 12 (range 1–1164)E6/L, respectively), no circulating B cells could be detected (median 0, range 0–1 E6/L). At 6 weeks after alloSCT, NK and T cell numbers further increased (medians 212 (52-813), and 130 (range 25–1509)E6/L, respectively), whereas B cell numbers still remained low in the majority of patients (median 15, range 0–813E6/L). In all patients, T cells were detectable before the appearance of circulating B cells. Furthermore, the expression of CD52 and the sensitivity to alemtuzumab-mediated complement-dependent cell lysis (CDC) of B cells, T cells and NK cells was measured in vitro. The highest CD52 expression was observed on B cells (mean fluorescence intensity (MFI) 120), resulting in 95% lysis after incubation with 10ug/mL alemtuzumab and rabbit complement. NK cells showed a significantly lower CD52 expression (MFI 41), which was also reflected by a lower susceptibility to alemtuzumab-mediated CDC (62% lysis). Interestingly, differential expression of CD52 was observed on CD4 and CD8 T cells (MFI 120 and 101, respectively). Cytotoxicity analysis revealed relative protection of CD8 compared to CD4 T cells against alemtuzumab-mediated CDC, resulting in 52% and 90% lysis, respectively. Based on these results, we investigated in detail the presence and phenotype of the CD4 and CD8 subsets and EBV-specific CD8 T cells using tetramer staining at 6 weeks after alloSCT. In accordance with the in-vitro expression and susceptibility data, circulating CD52+ CD8 T cells including EBV-specific T cells were detectable. Interestingly, the majority of circulating CD4 T cells (64-93%, n=4) lacked CD52 expression, explaining their capacity to persist in the presence of alemtuzumab. We conclude that in vivo and in vitro T cell depletion with alemtuzumab is associated with a relatively low risk of EBV-associated PTLD because of efficient B cell depletion and persistent EBV immunity allowed by the relative insusceptibility for alemtuzumab of CD8 T cells and the development of CD52 negative escape variants of CD4 T cells. AbstractObjective:To determine factors that correlate with increased antibiotic use among adult inpatients in Taiwan.Design:Retrospective survey of medical records.Setting:14 acute-care hospitals (8 regional hospitals, 6 medical centers) in Taiwan.Participants:A systematic probability sample from each hospital, totaling 663 adult inpatients who were discharged or had died in early 1999.Measurements:Infectious disease physicians at the 14 hospitals collected data from medical records regarding patient demographics, hospitalization, discharge diagnosis, and antibiotics received. Results:A total of 447 (67%) patients received antibiotics for an overall rate of 813 antibiotic-days (number of days patients received each antibiotic)/1,000 patient-days. Both the proportion of beds in intensive care units ([ICUs] Pearson correlation coefficient [r], 0.67; 95% confidence interval [CI95], 0.36-0.89;P<.01) and the proportion of patients admitted to surgical services (r,0.66; CI95, 0.20-0.88;P=.01) correlated with the mean patient rate of antibiotic-days/hospital-day (MPAUD). In contrast, we found no correlation between the proportion of patients who received antibiotics and the MPAUD. Using multiple linear regression, medical center status was the only independent predictor for increased MPAUD (regression coefficient [b], 0.15; CI95, 0.05-0.24;P<.01). There was no correlation between pooled rates of antibiotic-days/hospital-day and any hospital demographic factors. First-generation cephalosporin (39%) and aminoglycoside (24%) use accounted for the majority of antibiotic-days.Conclusions:Antibiotic use is greater in medical centers than in regional hospitals and appears to be independent of surgical case mix or the proportion of ICU beds. Determination of multiple, independent measures of antibiotic use may be necessary to understand the relation between antibiotic use and resistance in hospitals.

The chapter is a first step on the way to classify the earliest Muslim theologians according to their position and role in the history of natural theology and philosophy. It argues that Jahm b. Ṣafwān and Ḍirār b. ʿAmr represent an empiristic theory according to which the sensible reality outside the mind corresponds one-to-one to the perception inside the human mind. God’s creation is by composition of bundles of properties; man’s knowledge is by decomposition of the property bundles into their parts by means of perception. The perceptions of substantial and qualitative change supply the empirical data by which the intuition of God as the cause of all generation, corruption, and change in corporeal things happens. They refuse a principle of form and essence in things as well as natural causes and powers of generation and alteration in the created cosmos.

AbstractNew communication patterns define market preferences, while the constant use of e-devices in daily life impacted the common sense through the interpretation of visual codes. It is necessary to determine the quintessential steps to define a strategic approach to the European audio-visual aarket and find new opportunities for research, application and creation of new iconic audiovisuals to design and deliver cognitive-emotional experiences for an inclusive and accessible cultural heritage. The digital revolution has altered the production of various industrial sectors, the audio-visual market including and the use of outdated languages and technologies results in the loss of the audience in the sector. Transferring domain specific expertise and know how into new technologies, is not only adding to the quality of contents and the tradition of the sector, but it is becoming a factor for further developments and progress. Supported by the EU funded project BSB/831/ HERiPRENEURSHIP “Establishing long-lasting partnerships to upgrade heritage-based offers and create new investment opportunities in tourism and the cultural and creative industries”, a novel cultural experience pattern is introduced for the 6 Unesco-listed properties in Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova, Georgia, and Türkiye in the form of a multimedia eBook collection. The design is articulated in two central moments: (a) the presentation of a methodology acquired from many years of research in new media languages and applied in a number of European case studies on the use of tangible or intangible cultural heritage as instruments of social cohesion; (b) from a practical point of view, this methodology is applied to stories, myths, traditions and history reconfigured for the construction of new stories for an unlimited global audience. This paper discusses the process to lead a multicultural and multigenerational audience towards quality experiences at places of cultural significance through an integrated word-image relationship in the digital environment.

Abstract Terry Penner’s book is designed as the first of two volumes, the second to be entitled Plato and the Philosophers of Language. Its structure is complex. In the centre are two dialogues between Plato and Frege, first ‘The Nominalist’ (81 pages) and then ‘Aristotle’s Dilemma’ (39 pages). The first dialogue introduces Plato’s argument for the existence of Forms at Phaedo 74 B–C, and aims to clear away some preliminary difficulties that it confronts (sects. 1–5). It then turns to the task of arguing that all those who interpret Plato as committed to the literal self-predication of Forms are mistaken (sects. 6–11). The second dialogue returns to the argument of Phaedo 74 B–C and introduces what appears to be the main problem for it, viz. that it attempts to argue from the existence of mental states to the existence of the objects of those states

Masayuki Inoue of the University of Tokyo designed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3630) a linker that specifically directed C-H hydroxylation, as illustrated by oxidation of 1 to 2. Phil S. Baran of Scripps/La Jolla detailed (Nature 2009, 459, 824; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 9705) some of the factors that direct reactivity in intermolecular C-H hydroxylation. Ning Jiao of Peking University devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 7094) a protocol for the direct oxidation of a methylated aromatic 3 to the nitrile 4. Armando J. L. Pombeiro of TU Lisbon developed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2009, 351, 2936) a procedure for C-H carboxylation, converting 5 into 6. Maurizio Fagnoni of the University of Pavia showed (Chem. Commun. 2009, 7351) that sunlight was sufficient to promote the addition of cyclohexane 7 to methyl acrylate to give 8. Jin-Quan Yu, also of Scripps/La Jolla, established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 9886) conditions for the selective Pd-mediated coupling of 9 to iodobenzene to give 10. Alexei V. Novikov of the University of North Dakota demonstrated (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 6963; Heterocycles 2009, 78, 2531) that both diazo sulfonates such 11 and the related diazo sulfones cyclized smoothly under Rh catalysis to give the six-membered ring products. In the course of a synthesis of the Psoralea corylifolia –derived bakuchiol, the adduct from the cyclization of 11 was converted into the vinylated product 12. C-H bonds can also be activated electronically by proximal functional groups. Yong-Min Liang of Lanzhou University observed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 7464) that an N-aryl cyclic amine 13 could be oxidized to the syn diacetoxylated product 14. Note that the α-acetoxy group of 14 is activated for ionization and further bond formation. Yuhong Zhang of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, found (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3730) that the activated intermediate from the oxidation of 15 coupled with a silyl enol ether to deliver the coupled product 16. Bernd Plietker of the Universität Stuttgart devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 5752) a Ru catalyst for the coupling of an alkyne 18 to an α,β-unsaturated ester 17 to give the diene 19. Both disubstituted alkynes and more complex α,β-unsaturated esters participated as well. Gregory K. Friestad of the University of Iowa observed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 819) that an N-vinyl amide 20 could be homologated to the ester 22.

A variety of antibiotics and immune-suppressive agents contain extended arrays of all- ( E )-polyenes. Samir Bouzbouz of CNS Rouen and Janine Cossy of ESPCI ParisTech devised ( Synlett 2009, 803) a simple iterative route to polyacetates such as 1 and demonstrated that after cross-metathesis, elimination, in this case to give Navenone B 3, was facile. Both ketones and esters can promote the elimination. Daesung Lee of the University of Illinois at Chicago designed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11 , 571) a clever chain-walking ring-closing ene-yne metathesis, cyclizing 4 to 5. Deprotection led to (+)-asperpentyn 6. This should be a general entry to such polyoxygenated cyclohexenes. For the structures of H2 and G2, see Organic Highlights, September 13, 2004. One of the challenges in the synthesis of (-)-amphidinoloide K 10 is the assembly of the complex conjugated diene. Eun Lee of Seoul National University found (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 2364) a solution to this problem in the Ru-catalyzed cross-metathesis between the alkyne 7 and the alkene 8. Note that the cross-metathesis proceeded with high regioselectivity and with substantial (7.5:1) control of the product alkene geometry. For the construction of complex natural products such as norhalichondrin B 14, it is important to employ a convergent synthetic strategy. For this to be successful, efficient methods for convergent coupling are required. In the course of a synthesis of 14, Andrew J. Phillips of the University of Colorado showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 2346) that Ru-mediated cross-metathesis could be used to couple the enone 11 with the alkene 12. A less congested version of H2, designed by Robert H. Grubbs of Caltech, was used for the coupling. The electron-deficient alkene of 11 and the more electron-rich alkene of 12 made a matched set, promoting the cross-coupling. Note again, in this context, the desirability of leaving the allylic alcohol of 12 unprotected to facilitate Ru-catalyzed alkene cross-metathesis.

Aeolian processes produce vast areas of sand and dunes in the arid region and need monitoring since they are encroaching land and degrading infrastructures. In this study, we used the satellite data of ASTER and mineral indices namely quartz index (QI) and carbonate index (CI), and identified and discriminated the sand deposits, dunes, and associated rock formations that occurred in and around the QAFCO site 5/6, Qatar. The mapping of the area using high spatial resolution WorldView-2 satellite data confirmed the presence of sand deposits, dunes, and sand encroachments in the site. Our field studies validated the satellite data results. The grain size analyses of samples showed that the deposits have predominantly sand grains (81.3 to 99.81 %). The XRD analyses of samples identified the presence of quartz, calcite, dolomite, albite, and halite minerals. These are confirmed by geochemical analyses, which showed the high concentration of SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, CO3, SO4, Cl, and B. In addition, the study of sand stabilization by bacteria method to stop the erosion at selected places of the site showed the applicability of the technique. All results allowed us to assess the implications of the deposits and encroachments at the industry site.

Streszczenie:
One of the effective ways to obtain new biologically active substances is the search for new strains of microorganisms - producers. The most active antagonists among microorganisms are actinobacteria: of the 10,000 known antibiotics produced by microorganisms, about 70% are of actinomycete origin. Microorganisms, including actinobacteria, are of interest as enzyme producers, in particular, for the biocontrol of phytopathogenic fungi, as plant protection preparations, as well as for the biodegradation of plant residues, as a reservoir of infection in the soil for agricultural plants, etc. The task of the research was to study the ability of strains of actinobacteria isolated from the biofilm of the “La Izvor” lake system to exhibit enzymatic activity, as well as to inhibit the growth of a number of phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi. The objects of research were representatives of 8 genera of actinobacteria isolated from the biofilm of the lake system "La Izvor", Chisinau. It was established that strain B 2.1 (genus Actinoplanes) has weak (+) amylase activity, medium (++) lipase and high (+++) catalase activity. Strain B 3.1 (genus Frankia) showed weak (+) catalase and moderate (++) amylase activity. In strain B 4.1 (genus Geodermatophilus) a weak (+) catalase activity was noted, as in strain B 6.1 (genus Nocardia). The representative of the Micromonospora strain B 5.1 was characterized by medium (++) catalase and weak (+) amylase activity. Four strains are representatives of the river. Streptomyces showed weak (+) amylase activity, 2 strains of this genus (B 8.1 and B 8.4) also had weak (+) catalase activity, and only strain B 8.1 showed medium (++) lipase activity. Low antibacterial activity was observed in strain B 5.1 (genus Micromonospora) - the diameter of the growth inhibition zones of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Bacillus subtilis, Clavibacter michiganensis, Erwinia carotovora - 9.0 - 14.0 mm. From the strains of genus Streptomyces, only strain B 8.3 had the ability to inhibit the growth of 5 phytopathogenic bacteria with a zone diameter of 12.0-16.0 mm. It was found the ability to inhibit the growth of the phytopathogen Alternaria alternata by the strains B 2.1, B 4.1, B 8.3, and B 8.4 (zone diameter - 15.0 - 20.0 mm). The growth of Fusarium solani was retarded by 6 strains (zones from 10.0 to 20.0 mm); Fusarium oxysporum - by 2 strains (zones 12.0-14.0 mm); and Aspergillus niger – by 4 strains (zones 12.0 - 16.0 mm). Thus, the conducted studies have shown that new strains of actinobacteria isolated from the biofilm of the “La Izvor” lake system, Chisinau, which have shown amylase, catalase, and lipase activity, as well as having the ability to inhibit the growth of a number of phytopathogens, are of particular interest and can replenish the National Collection of Non Pathogenic Microorganisms.

Future aircraft wing technology is rapidly moving toward flexible and morphing wing concepts capable to enhance aircraft wing performance in off-design conditions and to reduce operative maneuver and gust loads. However, due to the reduced stiffness, increased mass, and increased degree of freedom (DOF), such mechanical systems require advanced aeroelastic assessments since the early design phases; this appears crucial to properly drive the design of the underlying mechanisms since the conceptual phase by mitigating their impact on the whole aircraft aeroelastic stability. Preliminary investigations have shown that the combined use of adaptive flap tabs and morphing winglets significantly improves aircraft aerodynamic performance in climb and cruise conditions by the order of 6%. Additionally, by adapting span-wise lift distributions to reduce gust solicitations and alleviate wing root bending moment at critical flight conditions, significant weight savings can also be achieved. Within the scope of Clean Sky 2 Airgreen 2 project, flutter and divergence characteristics of a morphing wing design integrating adaptive winglets and flap tabs are discussed. Multi-parametric flutter analyses are carried out in compliance with CS-25 airworthiness requirements (paragraph 25.629, parts (a), (b), (c) and (d)) to investigate static and dynamic aeroelastic stability behavior of the aircraft. The proposed kinematic systems are characterized by movable surfaces, each with its own domain authority, sustained by a structural skeleton and completely integrated with EMA-based actuation systems. For that purpose, a sensitivity analysis was performed taking into account variations of the stiffness and inertial properties of the referred architectures. Such layouts were reduced to a stick-equivalent model which properties were evaluated through MSC-NASTRAN-based computations. The proprietary code SANDY 4.0 was used to generate the aero-structural model and to solve the aeroelastic stability equations by means of theoretical modes association in frequency domain. Analyses showed the presence of critical modal coupling mechanisms in nominal operative conditions as well as in case of system malfunctioning or failure. Design solutions to assure clearance from instabilities were then investigated. Trade-off flutter and divergence analyses were finally carried out to assess the robustness of the morphing architectures in terms of movable parts layout, mass balancing and actuators damping.

Three children with severe inherited bleeding disorders have been followed for a number of years at this center. One child (DOB 3/71) initially presented with mild hemophilia A, (Factor VIII 6%). He subsequently developed an inhibitor to Factor VIII (maximum 45 B. U.) and seroconverted to HIV+ Status 12/83. In 12/86 he had virtually lost his antibody response to infused Factor VIII (previously withheld), with a maximum increase in inhibitor titre to1 B. U. on challenge. In addition, his antitetanus antibody titre was very low at 0.01 u/ml earlier in theyear. His absolute T4 cell number at this time was very low at 64 and did not respond to skin antigen testing to PPD, tetanus and Candida. The second patient (severe hemophilia A DOB 7/76) had seroconvertedto HIV+ Status in 9/78. This child has lost his a-HBs seropositive status with an absolute T4 count of 239. His current anti-tetanus titre is 0.01 u/ml.The third patient (von Willebrand disease, Type III, DOB 7/74) seroconverted to HIV+E status by 5/83. His T4 absolute numbers have fallen to 53. His anti-tetanus antibody titre has fallen to extremely low levels (0.01 u/ml), and this failed to respond to re-immunization with tetanus toxoid. These three patients indicate that previously immunized children may lose their immune status and their ability to respond to recall antigens. It is pertinent to note that lymphocytes from all 3 patients failed to respond mitogenically in vitro to tetanus antigen pari passu with the observed very low anti-tetanus antibody titres. These phenomena would indicate that these patients are probably susceptible to previously preventable infectious agents including poliovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and hepatitis B virus.

Complex study was performed in order to evaluate the primary haemostasis of patients with generalized atherosclerosis. Signs referring to hypercoagulability and platelet activation are known from previous studies. The purpose of this work was to investigate the primary haemostasis in every detail. Assays were performed in 20 atherosclerotic patients and 10 control persons. Methods: platelet count, Ivy bleeding time (Simplate II), platelet retention (Adeplat T), in vivo platelet consumption (Borchgrevink), study of vWFAg by Laurell’s rocket and crossed immunoelectrophoresis (using Clottimmun-AHG Assoc. Protein, Behring), plasma B-TG (Amersham), the stable metabolites of TXA2 (TXB2) and PGI2 (6-KPGF) by RIA-kits. Results: platelet counts and bleeding times were not different, in vivo platelet consumption was also similar, but platelet retention proved to be increased in patients (40 vs 27 %). Increase of vWFAg level characterized atherosclerotic patients (277±83 vs 102±28 %); the relative mobility (RM) ratio which indicates the migration distance of vWFAG in CIE was significanty altered (0.33 compared to 0.26) meaning that the molecular forms of protein with faster mobility were increased to a greater degree than forms with slow mobility. B-TG plasmatic level was increased in patients (115 vs 28 ng/ml), the quotient of TXB2 and 6-KPGF was much bigger (4.7 vs 0.4). In conclusion: the most striking change was the elevation of plasmatic vWFAg level together with its structural alteration, i.e. predominance of the smaller oligomers. Primary haemostasis seems to be more active than normal, atherosclerosis represents a hyperadhesive and/or prethrombotic state. Although all the findings may be the result of vessel wall lesions, the observed changes may also have a causal role in the progression and complications of atherosclerosis.

The effect of a low-dose aspirin regimen on platelet and vascular prostaglandin metabolism was studied in vivo in man. In a double-blind placebo-controlled cross-over study, 7 healthy male volunteers were treated with aspirin (35 mg.day−1 or placebo for 7 days. After a washout period of 2 weeks, the subject were crossed to the alternate treatment. 12 hours after the last dose of aspirin or placebo formation of thromboxane A2 (TxA2) and prostacyclin (FGI2) was measured in blood emerging from a standardized injury of the microvasculature made to determine bleeding time. TxA2 and PGI2 were measured as their stable degradation products, thromboxane B2 (TxB2) and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1α (6-keto PGF1α), using radioimmunoassay procedures. When subjects were treated with placebo, there was a rapid and substantial generation of both TxA2 and PGI2 at the site of plate-let-vessel wall interaction. This was reflected by an increase of TxB2 from 2.8±1 ng/ml and of 6-keto-PGF1α from 38.6±14.6pg/ml in the first minute to 4.5±0.6 ng/ml TxB2 and 154±50 pg/ml 6-keto-PGF1α after 4 minutes. Low-dose aspirin caused a significant inhibition of both TxA2 and PGI2 generation in bleeding time blood as represented by 65-92% and 81-84% inhibition of TxB2 and 6-keto-PGF1α Respectively throughout the 4 minute study period. We conclude that (a) rapid activation of both platelet prostaglandin metabolism and vascular PGI2 biosynthesis occurs at the site of platelet-vessel wall interaction and (b) low-dose aspirin results in a significant inhibition of platelet and vascular cyclo-oxygenase activity. Thus, our data fail to confirm the concept of a differential effect of low-dose aspirin on platelet and vascular prostaglandin synthesis in vivo in man.

Introduction: In documents from the Brazilian Society of Radiotherapy, quantitative analysis revealed that radiotherapy sessions, when performed, have not been timely. The average waiting time between the diagnosis data and the start of radiotherapy has been, on average, 113.4 days — which can consistently affect the chances of being cured for many patients. In some regions, waiting time is even longer; not infrequently, patients are treated with outdated methods and unprecision machines. Radiotherapy in Brazil is in a critical situation, especially with regard to the care of patients assisted by the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS). The main problems that contribute to this scenario are related to inadequate description and poor installation capacity, both from the point of view of the number of devices and their geographic distribution. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether delaying the initiation of adjuvant radiotherapy is related to decreased survival in women with breast cancer. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive, and longitudinal study (cross section) of patients admitted to the CRI/IBO, Niterói, RJ, all from SUS. Through the review of medical records, 81 patients were selected. Only patients diagnosed with stage IIb (T3N0) breast malignancy according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer TNM 8th (AJCC) were included. The analysis was performed by the time taken to start the radiotherapy after the initial treatment, which was treated by conservative surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy. The cohort was divided into two groups according to the timing of radiotherapy after the initial treatment: 6 months. Results: In the data analysis, it was observed that 70 (86.4%) patients did not have disease recurrence, while 11 (13.6%) patients had tumor recurrence. The average time between the end of the last chemotherapy day and the start of adjuvant radiotherapy was 6.1 months (1–12/95%CI 5.5–6.8, SD±2.9). Referring patients to those who provide adjuvant radiotherapy at 6 months (group B), we have 36 patients (44.4%) in group A and 45 patients (55.6%) in group B. In group A (36 patients), 34 patients (94.4%) did not have tumor recurrence and 2 (5.6%) did have tumor recurrence. In group B (45 patients), 36 (80%) patients did not have tumor recurrence and 9 (20%) did have tumor recurrence, with p=0.0001. Bearing in mind that the objective of the study is disease-free survival in 5 years, the mean follow-up time of patients was 69.8 months (51–92/95%CI 68.2–71.3, SD±7.0). It was evaluated that patients who had adjuvant radiotherapy in less than 6 months had a longer survival than patients who had more than 6 months (p <0.001). Therefore, patients with a delay of more than 6 months in the initial adjuvant radiotherapy treatment had an impact on the 5-year disease-free survival. Conclusion: This study is not conclusive, but we were able to observe data that show a worsening in the patient’s survival and prognosis in relation to the delay in the radiotherapy treatment. However, the waiting time for radiotherapy should be as short as reasonably possible, as there is a possibility that this delay will cause worse disease control rates.

ASME paper 79-GT-175 presented the design philosophy upon which the Lucas fan spray fuel injection combustion system for small gas turbines is based. Included were results from a system designed for an aircraft Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) and capable of operating with aviation kerosene, gas oil and marine diesel fuels. Since the publication of the above paper there has been further development of the system and application of the design to a range of engines. The present paper reviews the design philosophy for fan spray combustion systems and describes its application to a unit for a Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) engine with combustion loadings greater than five times that of the initial application covered by paper 79-GT-175. The design concept is described together with results from, (a) flow visualisation, (b) testing at combustion loading (ΛSI) values between 6 and 24 kg/s Pa 1·8m3 over a range of air to fuel ratios from 50/1 to 300/1, and (c) light-ups over a range of conditions from sea level static to 15 km at 1.6 Flight Mach No. with fuel fed to various configurations of fuel injector i.e. all six injectors, three equispaced, three grouped together and one only. The fuel used was mainly aviation kerosene with a check at a 290 kW condition using gas oil.

Streszczenie:
To reduce financial risk and N losses to the environment, fertilization methods are needed that improve NUE and increase the quality of wheat. In the literature, ample attention is given to grid-based and zone-based soil testing to determine the soil N available early in the growing season. Plus, information is available on in-season N topdressing applications as a means of improving GPC. However, the vast majority of research has focused on wheat that is grown under N limiting conditions in sub-humid regions and irrigated fields. Less attention has been given to wheat in dryland that is water limited. The objectives of this study were to: (1) determine accuracy in determining GPC of HRSW in Israel and SWWW in Oregon using on-combine optical sensors under field conditions; (2) develop a quantitative relationship between image spectral reflectance and effective crop physiological parameters; (3) develop an operational precision N management procedure that combines variable-rate N recommendations at planting as derived from maps of grain yield, GPC, and test weight; and at mid-season as derived from quantitative relationships, remote sensing, and the DSS; and (4) address the economic and technology-transfer aspects of producers’ needs. Results from the research suggest that optical sensing and the DSS can be used for estimating the N status of dryland wheat and deciding whether additional N is needed to improve GPC. Significant findings include: 1. In-line NIR reflectance spectroscopy can be used to rapidly and accurately (SEP <5.0 mg g⁻¹) measure GPC of a grain stream conveyed by an auger. 2. On-combine NIR spectroscopy can be used to accurately estimate (R² < 0.88) grain test weight across fields. 3. Precision N management based on N removal increases GPC, grain yield, and profitability in rainfed wheat. 4. Hyperspectral SI and partial least squares (PLS) models have excellent potential for estimation of biomass, and water and N contents of wheat. 5. A novel heading index can be used to monitor spike emergence of wheat with classification accuracy between 53 and 83%. 6. Index MCARI/MTVI2 promises to improve remote sensing of wheat N status where water- not soil N fertility, is the main driver of plant growth. Important features include: (a) computable from commercial aerospace imagery that include the red edge waveband, (b) sensitive to Chl and resistant to variation in crop biomass, and (c) accommodates variation in soil reflectance. Findings #1 and #2 above enable growers to further implement an efficient, low cost PNM approach using commercially available on-combine optical sensors. Finding #3 suggests that profit opportunities may exist from PNM based on information from on-combine sensing and aerospace remote sensing. Finding #4, with its emphasis on data retrieval and accuracy, enhances the potential usefulness of a DSS as a tool for field crop management. Finding #5 enables land managers to use a DSS to ascertain at mid-season whether a wheat crop should be harvested for grain or forage. Finding #6a expands potential commercial opportunities of MS imagery and thus has special importance to a majority of aerospace imaging firms specializing in the acquisition and utilization of these data. Finding #6b on index MCARI/MVTI2 has great potential to expand use of ground-based sensing and in-season N management to millions of hectares of land in semiarid environments where water- not N, is the main determinant of grain yield. Finding #6c demonstrates that MCARI/MTVI2 may alleviate the requirement of multiple N-rich reference strips to account for soil differences within farm fields. This simplicity will be less demanding of grower resources, promising substantially greater acceptance of sensing technologies for in-season N management.
