There are few handbooks devoted to clinical neuropsychology or behavioral neurology written in French. Most recently, there have been two: one by Habib and the other edited by Seron and Jeannerod. This revised and improved edition of the book edited by M.I. Botez completes this short list. The Botez book is impressive in terms of both its form and its content. The first edition, published in 1987, had 413 pages, 36 collaborators, and 37 chapters. The new edition has 682 pages, 55 collaborators, and 37 chapters. Fourteen of the chapters are quasi-exact reproductions of those in the first edition, while the others have been modified or added.

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common cause of disability in people older than 65 years. Readability of online OA information has never been assessed. A 2003 study found the quality of online OA information to be poor. Objective The aim of this study was to review the readability and quality of current online information regarding OA. Methods The term osteoarthritis was searched across the three most popular English language search engines. The first 25 pages from each search engine were analyzed. Duplicate pages, websites featuring paid advertisements, inaccessible pages (behind a pay wall, not available for geographical reasons), and nontext pages were excluded. Readability was measured using Flesch Reading Ease Score, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and Gunning-Fog Index. Website quality was scored using the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) benchmark criteria and the DISCERN criteria. Presence or absence of the Health On the Net Foundation Code of Conduct (HONcode) certification, age of content, content producer, and author characteristics were noted. Results A total of 37 unique websites were found suitable for analysis. Readability varied by assessment tool from 8th to 12th grade level. This compares with the recommended 7th to 8th grade level. Of the 37, 1 (2.7%) website met all 4 JAMA criteria. Mean DISCERN quality of information for OA websites was “fair,” compared with the “poor” grading of a 2003 study. HONcode-endorsed websites (43%, 16/37) were of a statistically significant higher quality. Conclusions Readability of online health information for OA was either equal to or more difficult than the recommended level.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Background Medical officers (trainees) in their first to third postgraduate years (PGY-1–3s) work in complex, busy environments, performing tasks that require concentration and application of learned skills. There are frequently competing demands, and being paged is among the most common. Objective We quantified and described the effect of interruptions that paging created on the clinical workflow of PGY-1–3s during ward duties. Methods This prospective study was conducted at 2 teaching hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Medical students were recruited as observers to log interruptions of PGY-1–3s' workflow arising from pages from other members of the hospital team. Results Forty-two pairs consisting of a PGY-1–3 trainee and an observer were recruited, with 24 proceeding to data collection. Nursing was the most frequent source of pages (47%); other medical staff accounted for 16% of pages, allied health for 12%, and others for 24% (with pharmacy the most common). Pages commonly involved direct patient care (46%), followed by medication issues (21%). Tasks interrupted by pages encompassed direct patient care (37%), indirect patient care (15%), and documentation (12%). Only 27% of pages were assessed as appropriate and urgent, while 58% were considered appropriate but not urgent, and 16% were not appropriate. Only 38% of pages were judged to be clinically more important than the task they interrupted. Conclusions Pages frequently interrupted direct patient care activities for PGY-1–3 trainees, and a significant proportion of pages were identified as either not requiring immediate attention or not appropriate, resulting in potentially avoidable interruptions to clinical workflow. Alternate means of alerting trainees to nonurgent tasks may reduce interruptions and facilitate patient care.

Streszczenie:
45 Background: To page specific services within the Division of Hematology and Oncology (Heme/Onc) at Northwestern Memorial Hospital previously required hospital staff to enter the specific service name into the web-based paging system. Turnover of faculty and staff, hospital growth, and use of locums staffing contributed to an increasing number of erroneous pages (pages intended for a different service). In this quality improvement initiative, we restructured the paging system so that all services within the Division of Heme/Onc populated when “hem” was entered into the web-based system. We aimed to decrease the number of erroneous pages received by heme/onc fellows by 20% with a subsequent improvement in perceived workload burden and job satisfaction. Methods: Pre- and post-intervention surveys were administered to all heme/onc fellows to assess impact on workload burden and job satisfaction. Fellows were asked to log all erroneous pages for a five-month period pre- and post-intervention. Results: Pre-intervention, fellows logged a total of 48 erroneous pages with 10 pages (21%) occurring between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM. Post-intervention, a total of 37 erroneous pages were logged with only 3 pages (8%) occurring overnight. Of the 12 (92.3%) fellows that responded to the pre-intervention survey, one (8.3%) reported that the number of incorrect pages significantly increased workload burden, 9 (75%) increased workload burden, and 2 (16.7%) neither increased nor decreased workload burden. Five responders (41.7%) reported the number of incorrect pages significantly decreased job satisfaction, 5 (41.7%) decreased job satisfaction, and 2 (16.7%) neither increased nor decreased job satisfaction. 100% of fellows responded to the post-intervention survey. One (7.7%) reported that the number of incorrect pages significantly increased workload burden, 8 (61.5%) increased workload burden, and 4 (30.8%) neither increased nor decreased workload burden. Two responders (16.4%) reported the number of incorrect pages significantly decreased job satisfaction, 6 (46.2%) decreased job satisfaction, and 5 (38.4%) neither increased nor decreased job satisfaction. Conclusions: By changing the departmental nomenclature to a structured format, we decreased the number of erroneous pages received over a 5-month period by 23% with a 70% reduction in overnight pages resulting in an improvement in perceived workload burden and job satisfaction among Hematology/Oncology fellows.

Abstract Some of the most powerful truths also are the simplest—so simple that a child can understand them. The concept of self-efficacy deals with one of these truths—one so simple it can be captured in a children’s book of 37 pages (with illustrations), yet so powerful that fully describing its mplications has filled thousands of pages in scientific journals and books over the past two decades. This truth is that believing that you can accomplish what you want to accomplish is one of the most important ingredients— perhaps the most important ingredient—in the recipe for success. Any child who has read The Little Engine That Could knows this is so. For over 20 years, hundreds of researchers have been trying to tell us why this is so.

Abstract Students of composition who find grammar a less-than-stimulating body of rules might be puzzled if they could hear the passionate tones with which its place in their classrooms is sometimes argued; we teachers so seldom seem neutral about whether or not we should teach them rules of grammar. After Patrick Hartwell argued against such teaching in the pages of College English, for instance, the “Comment and Response” sections of later issues brought readers a lively debate, one that had actually begun with the publication in 1963 of the famous Braddock, Lloyd-Jones, and Schoer report and its famous conclusion: “the teaching of formal grammar has a negligible or, because it usually displaces some instruction and practice in composition, even a harmful effect on improvement in writing” (37-38).

The Woman’s Exponent, published in Salt Lake City 1872-1914, aimed both to inform and assist Mormon women and to explain and defend them to the outside world. It consistently supported women’s suffrage. This chapter focuses on the Exponent’s strategies to defend both suffrage and the contentious church practice of polygamy through periods when all Utah women voted, when only those not involved in polygamy could vote, and when no Utah woman was allowed to vote. With Emmeline B. Wells, a church women’s leader, as its editor for 37 of its 42 years, the Exponent attempted to cover “every subject interesting and valuable to women,” but suffrage remained a significant goal. The chapter also discusses the Anti-Polygamy Standard, published 1880-83, which opposed suffrage for Mormon women, and Wells’s relationships with national suffrage organizations.

Streszczenie:
Some years ago, in 1975, I presented a paper and a slide show at an earlier sailing yacht symposium in Annapolis. The subject was a four-year, 28,000 mile cruise I had made in the years 1965 - 1968 most of the way around the world: Hawaii and the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia's Barrier Reef, the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, including the Greek Islands, an Atlantic crossing to Barbados from the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, and home to the Chesapeake. The paper I wrote then was entitled "Extended Cruising: An Overview" and contained sketches and data from my logs. It was same 55 pages long and talked about many facets of cruising from my vantage point, primarily as seen from the decks of Mamari, the 28 foot ketch I had bought in New Zealand. Lest Mamari 's size appear too small, which perhaps would make me seen heroic, recognize that in displacement and accomodations Mamari was the equivalent of a 33 foot boat. To dispel one other misconception, be advised that I normally sailed with a crew of two, sometimes more, and only sailed two legs single-handed, of about 500 miles each, one from Tonga to Fiji in the Pacific, the other in the Gulf of Suez and from Port Said to the Greek Islands. The 1975 paper reflected my background as a naval architect, combined with my experience as a sailor. I told of things I learned from others. I analyzed log data, presented photographs, drawings and tables, and wrote a series of "yarns" such as sailors spin about their travels. The paper is touched with a flavor of the sea, a flavor of talk over run or coffee in a snug anchorage or on a shared night watch. That 1975 paper makes good reading, and much of the information is still valid. It could be reprinted and if there is enough interest l will do so (contact me). This present paper is a brief look at my experiences on a series of sailing trips, but in particular a one year voyage in a 37 foot yawl from Turkey to the Chesapeake via the West Indies in 1980-81. The paper answers the question posed at the 1975 symposium, would I do the trip again? Then, I thought so, but could not be sure, now my reply is, "of course."

Streszczenie:
Singapore is an innovation-intensive nation. In 2020 Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong pledged to inject ‘up to S$150million’ in the country’s startup ecosystem (Channel News Asia). This paper discusses the distribution of public funds amongst startups in Singapore. It raises questions about the effectiveness of early-stage pre-seed funding and discusses medium and long-term impact of distributed funds on business performance. The paper defines startups as growth-oriented independent SMEs in pursuit Series A investments. It distinguishes between bootstrap initiatives and funding-intensive initiatives. The paper argues that there is currently a problematic emphasis on funding-intensive startups, and a potentially compromising neglect of bootstrap ventures who do typically not have equal access to smart funds, mentoring schemes and support frameworks. Equally importantly, bootstrap initiatives often escape the radar of government authorities, thus compromising the authorities’ capabilities of monitoring innovation performance across the entire spectrum. This paper uses a mixed-method approach. It draws on a series of exchanges with experts — entrepreneurs, incubator managers, investors, VC firms, as well as representatives of government funding bodies — and secondary research findings. The primary research data has been collected over a period of nine years. The preliminary hypothesis is that the support mechanisms in the context of contemporary startup ecosystems tend to be ill-directed and may compromise overall innovation performance. Various studies carried out in different parts of the world raise questions about the effectiveness of government funding for innovations that are pursued by startups and suggest that the distribution of public funds does often not benefit innovation performance generally: Following an investigation of public fund distribution in China, Hong et al. (2015) claim that ‘government grants negatively impact the overall innovation efficiency in the high-tech sector.’ Other studies (Liu and Rammer, 2016) point towards the possibility that government grants are often used as substitute for private innovation investment by established businesses who, in the absence of public funding, would be able to afford R&D financing internally, whilst early-stage startups that are in greater need of funding, often miss out on support due to requirements related to match funding or trading history. This means that early-stage startups are often disadvantaged, in particular bootstrap initiatives, whilst established SMEs and large businesses do not enhance their innovation performance through subsidies. It is also thought that there is a prioritisation of incremental innovations and a lack in funding for potentially disruptive innovations because the latter are at higher risk of economic failure. As a result, firms tend to prioritise incremental innovation, in conjunction with which it is easier to predict viability. This paper, which primarily focuses on the distribution processes used by Enterprise Singapore (ESG) and other public institutions in Singapore, raises questions about the effectiveness of public spending in relation to innovation. Bootstrap ventures that might benefit from smart-fund injections, are not captured by the Singapore authorities, and there is currently no reliable progress tracking to objectively monitor startup performance. Instead, various funding organisations including universities, VC firms, as well as the ESG, rely on each other’s recommendations in their decision-making. There is a likelihood that the selection process is subject to bias which may have compromising macro-economic implications in the long term.To summarise the above, the proposed paper raises questions about the tracking of government funded startups, and it explores the consequences of startup funding from an economic and a sociopolitical point of view. The paper discusses possibilities of reversing this trend by empowering independent startups through accessible support frameworks that operate autonomously and independent from profit-oriented incubators, VC firms and angel investment networks.Sample Sources:Hong, J. et al.
