We consider compact perturbations S=DΛ+K of normal diagonal operators DΛ by certain compact operators. Sufficient conditions for K to ensure the existence of non-trivial hyperinvariant subspaces for S have recently been obtained by Foia\c{s} et al. in C.\ Foia\c{s}, I.B.\ Jung, E.\ Ko, C. Pearcy, \textit{J.\ Funct. Anal} \textbf{263}(2012), 135-1377, and Klaja \textit{J.\ Operator Theory} \textbf{73}(2015), 127--142, by using certain spectral integrals along straight lines through the spectrum of S. In this note, the authors use circular cuts and get positive results under less restrictive local conditions for K.

Streszczenie:
From October to December 2005, onion (Allium cepa) plants in seed-production fields in south Uruguay (Canelones) had symptoms suggestive of those caused by Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV; genus Tospovirus, family Bunyaviridae). Symptoms included diamond-shaped lesions on seed stalks (scapes), each 1 to 5 cm long with a necrotic border, green center, and sometimes a second necrotic area in the center of the diamond (2,3). Necrotic lesions with more irregular shape were also associated with diseased plants. In 2006, scape samples with these symptoms were collected from four onion seed crops and assayed for IYSV using an IYSV-specific antiserum (Agdia Inc., Elkhart, IN) in a double-antibody sandwich-ELISA. IYSV was detected in all four onion seed crops monitored in 2006. IYSV incidence, expressed as the number of plants with symptoms, ranged from <1% (1 of 120 plants evaluated) to 20% (24 of 120 plants). Two fields were monitored in 2007, in which IYSV incidence increased from 2 and 3% in October to 7% (198 of 2,768 plants) and 40% (253 of 638 plants) in December, respectively. The highest incidence was observed in the same farm in 2006 and 2007. Scapes were sampled from the field with the highest incidence of symptoms in 2007 and tested for IYSV with IYSV-specific primers (3). Total RNA was extracted from 100 mg of symptomatic tissue, with green tissue adjacent to typical lesions, following a Trizol-based protocol (1). A reverse transcriptase-PCR assay with nucleocapsid gene-specific primers was used (3). A PCR product of approximately 26 bp was obtained, coincident with the expected length for IYSV. The PCR product was cloned and sequenced. The tospovirus N sequence of the isolate in Uruguay (Accession No. GU550518) had maximum identity (97%) with an Australian IYSV isolate (Accession No. AY345227), and >87% identity only with IYSV N protein sequences in GenBank. Because of the presence of IYSV in Brazil, Chile, and Peru, this first documentation, to our knowledge, of IYSV in onion crops in Uruguay suggests that the threat of IYSV to onion is increasing in South America. Streszczenie:
Abstract. The vortex during winter 2004/2005 was interesting for several reasons. It has been described as "cold" stratospherically, with relatively strong westerly winds. Losses of ozone until the final warming in March were considerable, and comparable to the cold 1999–2000 winter. There were also modest warming events, indicated by peaks in 10 hPa zonal mean temperatures at high latitudes, near 1 January and 1 February. Events associated with a significant regional stratospheric warming in the Pacific-Western Canada (PWC) sector then began and peaked toward the end of February, providing strong longitudinal variations in dynamical characteristics (Chshyolkova et al., 2007; hereafter C07). The associated disturbed vortex of 25 February was displaced from the pole and either elongated (upper) or split into two cyclonic centres (lower). Observations from Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on Aura are used here to study the thermal characteristics of the stratosphere in the Canadian-US (253° E) and Scandinavian-Europe (16° E) sectors. Undisturbed high latitude stratopause (55 km) zonal mean temperatures during the mid-winter (December–February) reached 270 K, warmer than empirical-models such as CIRA-86, suggesting that seasonal polar warming due to dynamical influences affects the high altitude stratosphere as well as the mesosphere. There were also significant stratopause differences between Scandinavia and Canada during the warming events of 1 January and 1 February, with higher temperatures near 275 K at 16° E. During the 25 February "PWC" event a warming occurred at low and middle stratospheric heights (10–30 km: 220 K at 253° E) and the stratopause cooled; while over Scandinavia-Europe the stratosphere below ~30 km was relatively cold at 195 K and the stratopause became even warmer (>295 K) and lower (~45 km). The zonal winds followed the associated temperature gradients so that the vertical and latitudinal gradients of the winds differed strongly between Scandinavia-Europe and Canada-US. The data-archive of Aura-MLS was also used to produce height versus latitude contours of ozone and related constituents, using mixing ratios (r) for ClO, N2O and HCl, for the 16° E and 253° E sectors. The Q-diagnostic was used to display the positions of the cyclonic (polar) vortex, using data from the UK Meteorological Office (MetO) analyses. ClO/HCL maxima/minima occurred on 1 February in both sectors, consistent with loss of ozone by heterogeneous chemistry. Low N2O values at high latitudes indicated that both sectors were inside the polar vortex, Time-difference plots show greater reductions in O3 in the Canadian sector. For the 25 February PWC warming event, O3-rich air from lower latitudes continued to be excluded from Europe, while O3 penetrated to at least 82° N over the Canadian sector. The contours for ClO, N2O and HCl at 16° E are consistent with continued ozone loss within the vortex during the event. Finally the thermal and chemical changes at these 16° E and 253° E sectors are placed into a hemispheric context using polar-cylindrical plots, with the following results. Firstly, the mixing ratios of O3, ClO, HNO3, HCL and the temperatures from Aura-MLS were consistent with consensus views of heterogeneous chemistry. Secondly, and consistent with the polar plots of C07, the vortices and their edges were strongly distorted during the 1 January, 1 and 25 February warming events, with sinusoidal shapes consistent with stationary planetary waves of wave-numbers 1 and 2. Thirdly, the distributions of the chemicals followed the curvatures (cyclonic and anticyclonic) of the vortex edges with O3 losses occurring at the cold cyclonic locations. During February these were over Scandinavia-Western Europe and Central-Eastern Canada. Trajectory analysis was applied to the two February warming events. For the 1 February event, the rotation time for air parcels within the peanut-shaped vortex was 3–4 days; while the O3-rich low latitude air that entered the Pacific-Western Canada sector during the 25 February event, showed no signs of becoming trapped within the highly distorted but still strong remnant of the polar vortex.

We report the mechanical control of plasmonic coupling between gold nanoparticles (GNPs) coated onto a large area wrinkled surface of an elastomeric template. Self-assembly and bottom-up procedures, were used to fabricate the sample and to increase the size of GNPs by exploiting the reduction of HAuCl4 with hydroxylamine. The elastic properties of template, the increase of nanostructure size joined with the particular grating configuration of the surface have been exploited to trigger and handle the coupling processes between the nanoparticles. Streszczenie:
Based on the data of daily maximum temperature in 26 meteorological stations in the North Center Region, Vietnam over the period of 1980 to 2013, the authors conducted the research on the spatial distribution of the number of hot days. The initial result shows that in general, in the north of the study area, the large number of hot days occurred in the plain, and tended to decrease westward and eastward. In the south, this number tends to increase from the west to the east. Especially, the largest number occurred in two areas: The Ma and Ca River's valleys (Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces) and the coastal areas (Thua Thien Hue province), creating two heat centers in Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province and Nam Dong district, Thua Thien Hue province.ReferencesAdina-Eliza Croitoru, Adrian Piticar, Antoniu-Flavius Ciupertea, Cristina FlorinaRosca, 2016 Changes in heat wave indices in Romania over the period 1961-2015. Посилання Anderson, 2001 – Anderson B. Voobrazhaemыe soobshchestva. Streszczenie:
AbstractIn this chapter, we explore one aspect of the Anthropocene, the vital, vibrant connections between life and matter (Whatmore, Cultural Geographies 13(4):600–609, 2006.). Drawing on the effectivity of water as a solution and the “Flint water crisis,” we explore how humans tend not to notice matter unless it brings an effect upon them. Our approach follows Melinda Benson, (Natural Resources Journal 59:251–280, 2019) in seeking to decenter human exceptionalism and explore the chemical and biological actors relationally engaged in a system with humans engendering phenomena that are unpredictable as we demonstrate in a case study of the City of Flint and its access to drinking water for humans. As this case highlights, often matter only becomes noticed when it establishes an ontological disturbance forcing itself on human experience and becoming noticed in the process. Important elements of such “noticing” are tied up with the human-material intra-actions engendering phenomena that is shaped by race and geographic history. Rather than constructing Flint and other examples as emergencies or crises that need to be solved, education should explore the dynamic nature of these events and the intra-actions of all elements. This approach offers one strategy for transforming what K–12 science education looks like for both developing scientists and everyday citizens.

Streszczenie:
Richard J. K. Taylor of the University of York has developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 1935) the diasteroselective intramolecular Michael cyclization of phosphonates such as 2. Quenching of the cyclized product with paraformaldehyde delivered ( + )-Paeonilactone B 3. Roberto Fernández de la Pradilla of the CSIC, Madrid established (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 4167) the diastereoselective intramolecular hetero Michael addition of alcohols to enantiomerically-pure acyclic sulfoxides such as 4 to give the allylic sulfoxide 5. Mislow-Evans rearrangement converted 5 into 6, the enantiomerically-pure core of Ethyl Deoxymonate B 7. The ellagitannins, represented by 10, are single atropisomers around the biphenyl linkage. David R. Spring of the University of Cambridge found (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 2593) that the chiral constraint of the carbohydrate backbone of 9 directed the absolute sense of the oxidative coupling of the mixed cuprate derived from 9, leading to Sanguiin H-5 10 with high diastereomeric control. A key challenge in the synthesis of the solandelactones, exemplified by 14, is the stereocontrolled construction of the unsaturated eight-membered ring lactone. James D. White of Oregon State University found (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 4139) an elegant solution to this problem, by exposure of the cyclic carbonate 11 to the Petasis reagent, to give 12. Subsequent Claisen rearrangement delivered the eight-membered ring lactone, at the same time installing the ring alkene of Solandelactone E 14. AD-mix usually proceeds with only modest enantiocontrol with terminal alkenes. None the less, Ian Paterson, also of the University of Cambridge, observed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 3016, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 3021) that bis-dihydroxylation of the diene 17 proceeded to give, after acid-mediated cyclization, the bis-spiro ketal core 18 of Spirastrellolide A Methyl Ester 19 with high diastereocontrol.

Streszczenie:
Karl A. Scheidt of Northwestern University described (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 1651) the oxidation of primary alcohols such as 1 in the presence of an indole 2. The product 3, an active acylating agent, is readily converted to other esters and amides. K. Rajender Reddy of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 2050) a protocol for the direct oxidation of a primary amine 4 to the corresponding nitrile 5. In the presence of ammonia, the same procedure converted aldehydes and primary alcohols into the nitriles. Several catalytic methods for the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes and ketones have recently been put forward. René Grée of the Université de Rennes 1 found ( Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 1493) that ZnBr2 catalyzed the oxidation of alcohols with diethyl azodicarboxylate. Tsutomu Katsuki of Kyushu University designed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 3432) a Ru catalyst for the air oxidation of primary alcohols to aldehydes. Kazuaki Ishihara of Nagoya University showed (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 251) that 1 mol % of 10 was sufficient to catalyze the oxidation of 6 to 7. With excess oxidant, 7 was carried on cleanly to 11. Nitroxyl radicals such as TEMPO have long been used to catalyze oxidations. Yoshiharu Iwabuchi of Tohoku University developed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 4619) a simple preparation of 13 , the most efficient such catalyst reported so far. This catalyst should also be useful for the oxidation reported by Professor Iwabuchi (Chem. Commun. 2009, 1739) of primary alcohols and aldehydes to the corresponding carboxylic acids. David S. Forbes of the University of South Alabama prepared (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 1855) 16 by combining thioanisole with N-bromosuccinimide. The reagent 16 efficiently sulfenylated active methylene compounds. Jiri Srogl of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic established (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 843) conditions for the oxidation of primary and secondary amines to aldehydes and ketones. Olga A. Ivanova of Moscow State University demonstrated (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 2793) that DMDO 21 could oxidize a sensitive amino cyclopropane such as 20 to the corresponding nitro compound.

Streszczenie:
Masayuki Inoue of the University of Tokyo designed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3630) a linker that specifically directed C-H hydroxylation, as illustrated by oxidation of 1 to 2. Phil S. Baran of Scripps/La Jolla detailed (Nature 2009, 459, 824; Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 9705) some of the factors that direct reactivity in intermolecular C-H hydroxylation. Ning Jiao of Peking University devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 7094) a protocol for the direct oxidation of a methylated aromatic 3 to the nitrile 4. Armando J. L. Pombeiro of TU Lisbon developed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2009, 351, 2936) a procedure for C-H carboxylation, converting 5 into 6. Maurizio Fagnoni of the University of Pavia showed (Chem. Commun. 2009, 7351) that sunlight was sufficient to promote the addition of cyclohexane 7 to methyl acrylate to give 8. Jin-Quan Yu, also of Scripps/La Jolla, established (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 9886) conditions for the selective Pd-mediated coupling of 9 to iodobenzene to give 10. Alexei V. Novikov of the University of North Dakota demonstrated (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 6963; Heterocycles 2009, 78, 2531) that both diazo sulfonates such 11 and the related diazo sulfones cyclized smoothly under Rh catalysis to give the six-membered ring products. In the course of a synthesis of the Psoralea corylifolia –derived bakuchiol, the adduct from the cyclization of 11 was converted into the vinylated product 12. C-H bonds can also be activated electronically by proximal functional groups. Yong-Min Liang of Lanzhou University observed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 7464) that an N-aryl cyclic amine 13 could be oxidized to the syn diacetoxylated product 14. Note that the α-acetoxy group of 14 is activated for ionization and further bond formation. Yuhong Zhang of Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, found (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 3730) that the activated intermediate from the oxidation of 15 coupled with a silyl enol ether to deliver the coupled product 16. Bernd Plietker of the Universität Stuttgart devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 5752) a Ru catalyst for the coupling of an alkyne 18 to an α,β-unsaturated ester 17 to give the diene 19. Both disubstituted alkynes and more complex α,β-unsaturated esters participated as well. Gregory K. Friestad of the University of Iowa observed (Organic Lett. 2009, 11, 819) that an N-vinyl amide 20 could be homologated to the ester 22.

Varinder K. Aggarwal of the University of Bristol showed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 1149) that condensation of a boronic ester 2 with a metalated aziridine 1 led, after oxidation, to the defined amino alcohol 3. Hisashi Yamamoto of the University of Chicago developed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 3333) conditions for the diastereoselective addition of an organometallic to an α-nitrosylated aldehyde, to give, after reduction, the diol 6. Xiaoyu Wu of Shanghai University and Gang Zhao of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry designed (Adv. Synth. Cat. 2009, 351, 158) an organocatalyst that mediated the enantioselective addition of hydroxyacetone 7 to a range of aldehydes. Andrew G. Myers of Harvard University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 5763) that trialkylaluminum reagents opened epoxides of enol ethers at the more substituted position, delivering protected diols such as 10. Keiji Maruoka of Kyoto University created (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2009, 48, 1838) an organocatalyst for the addition of an aldehyde 11 to an imine 12, to give 13. Markus Kalesse of Leibnitz Universität Hannover showed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 3485) that an organocatalyst could mediate the selective γ-reactivity of 15, leading to 16. Barry M. Trost of Stanford University found (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 1674) that an organocatalyst directed the addition of diazoacetate 18 to an aldehyde, to give, after further reaction with a trialkylborane, the syn aldol product 19. Professor Trost also demonstrated (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2009, 131, 4572) that a related complex mediated the conjugate addition of 22 to 21. Enantioselective construction of arrays of alkylated stereogenic centers is a particular challenge. Ji Zhang, then at Pfizer, found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2009, 50, 1167) that the chiral auxiliary of 24 directed both the conjugate addition and the subsequent protonation, and also allowed the product 25 to be brought to > 98% purity by crystallization. Tönis Kanger of Tallinn University of Technology developed (J. Org. Chem. 2009, 74, 3772) an organocatalyst for the conjugate addition of aldehydes to nitrostyrenes such as 26 to give 27.

From the fall of 2003 to the fall of 2013, the number of Hispanic students in K-12 schools increased from 19 percent to 25 percent; in addition, the percentage of English language learners (ELLs) in U.S. public schools was 9.4 percent during the 2014-2015 school year, ranging from 1.0 percent in West Virginia to 22.4 percent in California (NCES, 2016). General education teachers are increasingly likely to have ELL students in their classrooms, yet a majority of classroom teachers have little to no training in working with English language learners (NCES, 2011). This chapter provides a discussion of the role of language in learning, the needs of English language learners and their families, as well as the role of teacher preparation programs in preparing pre-service teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse young children.

Streszczenie:
Paraffin waxes are organic phase change materials possessing a great potential to store and release thermal energy. The reversible solid–liquid phase change phenomenon is the under-lying mechanism enabling the paraffin waxes as robust thermal reservoirs based on inherently high latent heat (i.e., ~200–250 J/g). However, the main drawback of paraffin waxes is their inability to expedite the phase change process owing to low thermal conductivity (i.e., ~0.19–0.35 Wm−1 K−1). This drawback has long been documented as a technological challenge of paraffin waxes especially for temperature-control applications where faster thermal storage/release is necessitated, encompassing thermal management of batteries, thermoelectric modules and photovoltaic panels. Besides, sustaining the solid-like form of paraffin waxes (shape-stability) is also recommended to avoid the liquid drainage threats for crucial applications, like thermal management of buildings and fabrics. These objectives can be met by developing the paraffin wax-based thermal composites (PWTCs) with help of various thermal reinforcements. However, PWTCs also encounter severe challenges, probably due to lack of design standards. This chapter attempts presenting the recent advances and major bottlenecks of PWTCs, as well as proposing the design standards for optimal PWTCs. Also, the fundamental classification of phase change phenomenon, paraffin waxes and potential thermal reinforcements is thoroughly included.

New amorphous-metal thermal-spray coatings have been developed recently that may provide a viable coating option for spent nuclear fuel & high-level waste repositories [Pang et al. 2002; Shinimiya et al. 2005; Ponnambalam et al. 2004; Branagan et al. 2000–2004]. Some Fe-based amorphous-metal formulations have been found to have corrosion resistance comparable to that of high-performance alloys such as Ni-based Alloy C-22 [Farmer et al. 2004–2006]. These materials rely on Cr, Mo and W for enhanced corrosion resistance, while B is added to promote glass formation and Y is added to lower the critical cooling rate (CCR). Materials discussed in this paper include yttrium-containing SAM1651 with CCR ∼ 80 K/s and yttrium-free Formula 2C with CCR ∼ 600 K/s. While nickel-based Alloy C-22 and Type 316L stainless steel lose their resistance to corrosion during thermal spraying, Fe-based SAM1651 and Formula 2C amorphous-metal coatings can be applied with thermal spray processes without any significant loss of corrosion resistance. In the future, such corrosion-resistant thermal-spray coatings may enable the development of less expensive containers for spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level waste (HLW), including enhanced multipurpose containers (MPCs), protected closure welds, and shields to protect containers from drips and falling rocks. These materials are extremely hard and provide enhanced resistance to abrasion and gouges from backfill operations. For example, Type 316L stainless steel has a hardness of approximately 150 VHN, Alloy C-22 has a hardness of approximately 250 VHN, while the Fe-based amorphous metals typically have hardness values of 1100–1300 VHN. Both Formula 2C and SAM1651 have high boron content which allow them to absorb neutrons, and therefore be used for enhanced criticality control. Cost savings can also be realized through the substitution of Fe-based alloy for Ni-based materials. Applications are also envisioned in oil & gas industry.

Streszczenie:
Doppler-resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation scans of the Cu atom ground state are used for thermometry in laser-ablated plasma plumes. The resulting LIF line shape is analyzed by fitting Voigt profiles to determine the Doppler width of the transition which then yields directly, translational temperature. Temperature is an extremely important parameter in determining the rate and extent of condensation occurring in metal vapor plumes such as the copper plumes which we have been studying. The other seminal controlling parameter, density, has been determined using a combination of hook spectroscopy and planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) as described in several preceding papers1,2 and a newer, more extensive study which is to be published3. In this work, the plume is produced by excimer laser bombardment of an OFC copper target rotating in a vacuum chamber (308 nm, > 20 J/cm2, 1-5 GW/cm2). The copper plasma plume expands rapidly into a helium or argon background gas at pressures of 1 and 10 torr. Scans with 25 torr of background gas yield no useful data as a result of various broadening mechanisms which make fitting unique Voigt profiles difficult. We find that plumes expanding into argon are kinetically hotter and cool more slowly than those in helium. For example, temperatures in 1 torr of helium and delay times between the ablation and probe pulses of 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0 msec are 1800 ± 250 K, 1600 ± 200 K, and 1300 ± 150 K , while temperatures in 1.0 torr of argon for identical delays are 3900 ± 700 K, 3000 ±350 K, and 2600 ± 250 K. In 10 torr of helium, the temperatures are 300 ± 150 K, 300 ± 300 K, and 300 ± 300 K for delays of 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 msec; whereas temperatures for the identical delay times in argon background gas at 10 torr are 2000 ± 350 K, 1600 ± 200 K, and 1000 ± 100 K. This result helps to explain our earlier observation that the rate of disappearance of Cu atom due to condensation reactions in these plumes is faster in helium than in argon as well as the more general observation that forming clusters and particulate in argon is not as easy as in helium3,4. Physically, this likely results from the higher thermal conductivity of helium relative to argon making helium better suited at removing the excess heat from the plume.

Streszczenie:
SOGETER is a waste conditioning process for Low Level radwaste (LLW) or Intermediate Level radwaste (ILW) such as sludge, soil, ashes, evaporator concentrate, concrete rubble, asbestos or sand. Such radioactive waste is usually solidified into a cement matrix, resulting in a 2 to 5 times volumetric waste increase, i.e. 1 m3 of initial raw waste generates 2 to 5 m3 of solidified waste. Sogeter melts the waste at high temperature - up to 2000 K, and produces a synthetic rock. The main component of the matrix is the waste itself; therefore 1 m3 of initial raw waste generates only 0.2 to 0.5 m3 of solidified waste. Compared to cementation, synthetic rock decreases the volume to be disposed of by a factor of 4 up to a factor of 25. By mixing different types of waste, or using additives, the composition of the waste is adjusted so that a fluid melt is obtained at temperatures less than 2000 K and the final 200 L ingot can be cooled within 2 days, without shattering or disaggregating. A wide range of compositions have been tested demonstrating that almost every type of waste can be conditioned with Sogeter. An industrial facility has been designed based on very robust and proven heating and off-gas treatment technology. Industrial tests have been carried out on more than 2 tons of simulated, non-radioactive waste, producing blocks of treated matter weighing up to 250 kg. During these tests all process parameters, including electrical consumption, throughput and robustness, have been checked.

The cooler consists of fluidic microchannels (in a Si wafer), diffused temperature sensors, and a Gd5(Si2Ge2) magnetocaloric refrigeration element. A magnetic field of 1.5 T is applied using an electromagnet to change the entropy of the magnetocaloric element for different ambient temperature conditions ranging from 258 K to 280 K, and the results are discussed. The tests show a maximum temperature change of 7 K on the magnetocaloric element at 258 K. The experimental results co-relate well with the entropy change of the material.

We conducted an experiment to demonstrate the thermoelectric nano-gap, which is recently expected to own high performance, in principle, because it does not have conductive heat flow between the high and low temperature region. In this study, the thermoelectric nano-gap is realized with a pair of probe and substrate where they are finely positioned. A temperature difference of ca. 10 K is imposed to the nano-gap under vacuum circumstances. A representative thermoelectric voltage, tunneling-current and gap were 250 μV, 0.3 nA and 50 nm. The obtained voltage and current, with assuming an effective probe-diameter of 10 nm, roughly agreed to a theoretical study (G. Despesse and T. Jager, J. Appl. Phys., Vol.96, p.5026-, 2004). However, the obtained gap was 25 times larger than that from the theoretical study.

In many LNG receiving terminals worldwide, the cryogenic heat of imported LNG which was liquefied by using 10% energy of natural gas supply1), 2), has been wasted into the sea water mainly through heat exchangers like ORVs (Open Rack Vaporizer)3). This cryogenic heat of 110 K (-256 F) class is considered, however, as an excellent energy source to apply thermodynamic cycles. Several literature, accordingly, are found to improve such high-grade energy potential of LNG regasification process as a low temperature sink, combining with fired heater at 1,100 K (1520 F) class or GT main exhaust gas at 700 K (800 F) class as a high temperature source, through Brayton and Rankine cycles5),6),7),8),9). This paper presents a typical example of closed “Ericsson” cycle which has the minimum cycle temperature of 157 K (-176 F) from LNG cryogenic heat and the maximum of 550 K (531 F) from the partial HRSG exit heat mixed with the partial GT exit gas. This closed gas turbine, from viewpoints of minor modification to existing power plants and no energy impacts for high temperature source, which would be better than the above-described idea, is able to offer 35% thermal efficiency. And it is recognized that this system would be superior to existing cryogenic generation systems of 20% class operated by Rankine Cycle.

The sputtering of graphite due to the bombardment of hydrogen isotopes is one of the critical issues in successfully using graphite in the fusion environment. In this work, we use molecular dynamics method to simulate the sputtering by using the LAMMPS. Calculation results show that the peak values of the sputtering yield are located between 25 eV to 50 eV. After the energy of 25 eV, the higher incident energy cause the lower carbon sputtering yield. The temperature which is most likely to sputter is about 800 K for hydrogen, deuterium and tritium. Before the 800 K, the sputtering rates increase when the temperature increase. After the 800 K, they decrease with the temperature increase. Under the same temperature and energy, the sputtering rate of tritium is bigger than that of deuterium, the sputtering rate of deuterium is bigger than that of hydrogen.

Streszczenie:
Seton Lake is a freshwater fiord located in southwestern British Columbia, roughly 4 km west of Lillooet and 250 km north-northeast of Vancouver. Located in the Coast Mountains, it is an alpine lake about 22-km long and roughly 1-1.5 km wide. It is separated from nearby Anderson Lake, located to the west, by a large pre-historic rock avalanche deposit at Seton Portage. The lake stands at about 243 m above sea level and is up to about 150 m deep (BC gov., 1953). Water level is controlled by a hydroelectric dam (i.e., Seton dam) located at the eastern end of the lake. Here, the lake drains east into Seton Canal, a 5 km diversion of the flow of the Seton River, which begins at the Seton dam. The Seton Canal pushes water to the Seton Powerhouse, a hydroelectric generating station at the Fraser River, just south of the community of Sekw'el'was and confluence of the Seton River, which drains into the Fraser River at Lillooet. Seton Portage, Shalatlh, South Shalatlh, Tsal'alh (Shalath), Sekw'el'was (Cayoosh Creek), and T'it'q'et (Lillooet) are communities that surround the lake. Surrounded by mountainous terrain, the lake is flanked at mid-slope by glacial and colluvial sediments deposited during the last glacial and deglacial periods (Clague, 1989; Jakob, 2018). The bedrock consists mainly of mafic to ultramafic volcanic rocks with minor carbonate and argillite from the Carboniferous to Middle Jurassic periods (Journeay and Monger, 1994). As part of the Public Safety Geoscience Program at the Geological Survey of Canada (Natural Resources Canada), our goal is to provide baseline geoscience information to nearby communities, stakeholders and decision-makers. Our objective was to see what kind of sediments were deposited and specifically if we could identify underwater landslide deposits. Thus, we surveyed the lake using a Pinger SBP sub bottom profiler made by Knudsen Engineering Ltd., with dual 3.5 / 200 kHz transducers mounted to a small boat (see photo). This instrument transmits sound energy down through the water column that reflects off the lake bottom surface and underlying sediment layers. At the lake surface, the reflected sound energy is received by the profiler, recorded on a laptop computer, and integrated with GPS data. These data are processed to generate a two-dimensional image (or profile) showing the character of the lake bottom and underlying sediments along the route that the boat passed over. Our survey in 2022 recorded 98 profiles along Seton Lake. The red transect lines show the locations of the 20 profiles displayed on the poster. The types of sediments observed are mostly fine-grained glaciolacustrine sediments that are horizontally bedded with a subtle transition between glaciolacustrine to lacustrine (e.g., profiles A-A'; C-C'; F-F'; S-S'). Profile S-S' displays this transition zone. The glaciolacustrine sediments probably were deposited as the Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreated from the local area (~13,000-11,000 years ago; Clague, 2017) and the lacustrine sediments, after the ice receded to present-day conditions. Some of the parallel reflections are interrupted, suggesting abrupt sedimentation by deposits that are not horizontally bedded; these are interpreted as landslide deposits (see pink or blue deposits on profiles). The deposits that show disturbance in the sedimentation found within the horizontal beds are thought to be older landslides (e.g., blue arrows/deposits in profiles C-C'; E-E'; F-F'; G-G'; I-I'; J-J'; K-K'; N-N'; P-P'; Q-Q'; R-R'; T-T'; U-U'), but the ones that are found on top of the horizontally laminated sediments (red arrows/pink deposits), and close to the lake wall, are interpreted to be younger (e.g., profiles B-B'; C-C'; H-H'; K-K'; M-M'; O-O'; P-P'; Q-Q'). At the fan delta just west of Seton dam, where there was no acoustic signal penetration, it is interpreted that the delta failed and brought down coarser deposits at the bottom of the lake (e.g., profiles H-H'; M-M'; and perhaps K-K'). However, these could be glacial deposits, bedrock, or other coarser deposits. Some of the deposits that reflect poor penetration of the acoustic signal, below the glaciolacustrine sediments, could represent glacial deposits, old landslide deposits, or perhaps the presence of gas (orange arrows; e.g, B-B'; D-D'; J-J'; O-O', T-T'). The preliminary results from sub bottom profiling reveal that there are underwater landslides deposits of widely varying ages buried in the bottom of the lake. However, the exact timing of these is not known. Hence our preliminary survey gives an overview of the distribution of landslides where there seems to be a larger number of landslides recorded in the narrower eastern portion of the lake.

Purpose/Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have an impact on health throughout the lifespan (Filletti et al., 1999; Hughes et al., 2017). These experiences range from physical and mental abuse, substance abuse in the home, parental separation or loss, financial instability, acute illness or injury, witnessing violence in the home or community, and incarceration of family members (Hughes et al., 2017). Understanding and screening for ACEs in children with urinary incontinence can help practitioners identify psychological stress as a potentially modifiable risk factor. Methods: A 5-month chart review was performed identifying English speaking patients ages 6-11 years presenting to the outpatient urology office for an initial visit with a primary diagnosis of urinary incontinence. Charts were reviewed for documentation of individual or family risk factors for ACEs exposure, community risk factors for ACEs exposures, and records where no related documentation was included. Results: For the thirty-nine patients identified, no community risk factors were noted in the charts. Seventy-nine percent of patients had one or more individual or family risk factors documented. Implications for Nursing Practice This chart review indicates that a significant percentage of pediatric, school-aged patients presenting with urinary incontinence have exposure to ACEs. A formal assessment for ACEs at the time of initial presentation would be helpful to identify those at highest risk. Streszczenie:
This report describes a research project for evaluating the applicability of the widely accepted 80 percent criterion for elongation of ground anchors to anchors with unbonded lengths exceeding 100 feet. This issue is driven by several recent projects involving ground anchors for landslide stabilization in which a significant percentage of the anchors did not meet the criterion that requires measured elongation during proof load testing of at least 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation. The projects involved anchor unbonded lengths in the range of 85 to 220 feet, which is outside the range traditionally used in practice, although anchors of this length are being used more frequently for landslide stabilization. The principal objective of this research is to address whether the widely accepted criterion of 80 percent elongation is applicable for such applications, and whether other factors affect the ability of anchors to meet the criterion. Analytical methods for predicting transfer of load along the length of steel strand due to friction loss are used routinely in the prestressed concrete industry. These analytical expressions provide a rational framework for quantifying changes in load due to friction along the length of a ground anchor in terms of a ‘wobble coefficient’ (K) as defined in Aalami(2004). Values of the wobble coefficient for ground anchors can only be determined by back‐calculating from load tests, i.e., fit the value of K to the appropriate analytical expression based on the known test load and measured percent elongation. The analytical basis is first developed and shown to provide a tool for evaluating results of anchor load tests to determine the magnitude of expected elongation as a function of unbonded length. Next, a database of anchor load tests is used to back‐calculate values of K for anchors with unbonded lengths in the range typically used in geotechnical applications (<100feet). These values of K are then used to calculate expected friction loss for anchors with high unbonded lengths (100 to 250 feet) to evaluate whether the 80 percent criterion is reasonable. The primary findings of this research are: Field data data show a general trend of increasing rate of friction loss with increasing unbonded length, i.e., longer anchors are more likely to fail the 80‐percent minimum elongation criterion; Shallow anchor inclination appears to be a strong contributor to higher friction loss because it makes placement of the anchor into the hole difficult, requiring the anchor to be forced in, which may induce additional curvature and twisting; Factors that contribute to alignment deviations of the anchor drill hole, such as obstructions, discontinuities, or alternating hard and soft layers, also contribute to curvature and increase friction loss; Factors that result in forcing the anchor in to the hole, which for the cases considered involved a combination of long anchors, shallow inclination, and alignment deviations, increases the probability of anchor damage. For example, failure of the seal between the bond and unbonded segments of the anchor may allow grout to penetrate the sheathing, preventing elastic deformation of the strands.

Streszczenie:
The Browns Hole quadrangle is in Weber and Cache Counties of northern Utah and covers the eastern part of Ogden Valley, a rapidly developing area of the Wasatch Range. The Middle and South Forks of the Ogden River bisect the quadrangle and are important watersheds and recreational areas to the communities of Ogden Valley and the Wasatch Front. The towns of Huntsville and Eden are just west of the quadrangle, unincorporated communities with year-round residents are present throughout the quadrangle, and numerous summer-cabin communities are present in the eastern part of the quadrangle. A portion of Powder Mountain ski resort, which draws year-round visitation and recreation, is present in the northwest corner of the quadrangle. The quadrangle contains the Willard thrust, a major thrust fault with approximately 30 mi (50 km) of eastward displacement that was active during the Cretaceous-Eocene Sevier orogeny (Yonkee and others, 2019). In the quadrangle, the Willard thrust places Neoproterozoic through Ordovician strata in the hanging wall over a fault-bounded lozenge of Cambrian strata and footwall Jurassic and Triassic strata (see cross section on Plate 2). Neoproterozoic strata comprise a succession of mostly clastic rocks deposited during rifting of western North America and breakup of the supercontinent Rodinia (Yonkee and others, 2014). These rocks include the Cryogenian-age Perry Canyon and Maple Canyon Formations, and the Ediacaran-age Kelley Canyon Formation, Papoose Creek Formation, Caddy Canyon Quartzite, Inkom Formation, Mutual Formation, and Browns Hole Formation. The Browns Hole Formation is a sequence of interbedded volcaniclastic rock and basalt lava flows that provides the only radiometric age control in the quadrangle. Provow and others (2021) reported a ~610 Ma detrital apatite U-Pb age from volcaniclastic sandstone at the base of the formation, Crittenden and Wallace (1973) reported a 580 ± 14 Ma K-Ar hornblende age for a volcanic clast, and Verdel (2009) reported a 609 ± 25 Ma U-Pb apatite age for a basalt flow near the top of the formation. Cambrian strata in the hanging wall include a thick basal clastic sequence (Geertsen Canyon Quartzite) overlain by a thick sequence of interbedded limestone, shale, and dolomite (Langston, Ute, and Blacksmith Formations). Hanging wall rocks are deformed by Willard thrust-related structures, including the Browns Hole anticline, Maple Canyon thrust, and numerous smaller folds and minor faults. Footwall rocks of the Willard thrust include highly deformed Cambrian strata within a fault-bounded lozenge exposed in the southern part of the quadrangle, and Jurassic and Triassic rocks exposed just south of the quadrangle. The Paleocene-Eocene Wasatch Formation unconformably overlies older rocks and was deposited over considerable paleotopography developed during late stages of the Sevier orogeny. The southwest part of the quadrangle is cut by a southwest-dipping normal fault system that bounds the east side of Ogden Valley. This fault is interpreted to have experienced an early phase of slip during local late Eocene to Oligocene collapse of the Sevier belt and deposition of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (Norwood Tuff) exposed west of the quadrangle (Sorensen and Crittenden, 1979), and a younger phase of slip during Neogene Basin and Range extension (Zoback, 1983). Lacustrine deposits and shorelines of Pleistocene-age Lake Bonneville are present in the southwest corner of the quadrangle near the mouth of the South Fork of the Ogden River and record the highstand of Lake Bonneville (Oviatt, 2015). Pleistocene glacial deposits, present in the northwest corner of the map, are likely related to the Pinedale glaciation, commonly expressed by two moraine building episodes in the Wasatch Range (Quirk and others, 2020). Numerous incised alluvial deposits and geomorphic surfaces are present along major drainages and record pre- and post-Lake Bonneville aggradational and degradational alluvial and colluvial sequences. Mass-movement deposits, including historically active landslides, are present throughout the quadrangle. Crittenden (1972) mapped the Browns Hole quadrangle at 1:24,000 scale, which provided an excellent foundation for the general stratigraphy and structure, but the 1972 map lacked important details of unconsolidated surficial units. As part of 1:62,500 scale mapping of the Ogden 30'x60' quadrangle, Coogan and King (2016) updated stratigraphic nomenclature, revised some contacts, and added more details for surficial units. For this map, we utilized new techniques for data acquisition and analysis to delineate surficial deposits, bedrock contacts, and faults more accurately and precisely. Mapping and field data collection were largely done in 2021–2022 using a combination of GPS-enabled tablets equipped with georectified aerial imagery (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA] National Agriculture Imagery Program [NAIP], 2009), orthoimagery (Utah Geospatial Resource Center [UGRC] State Geographic Information Database, 2018b, 2018c; 2021a, 2021b), and lidar data (UGRC State Geographic Information Database, 2006; 2011; 2013–2014; 2018a), previously published geologic maps, topographic maps, and applications for digital attitude collection. We also used hand-held GPS units, Brunton compasses, and field notebooks to collect geologic data. Field data were transferred to a Geographic Information System (GIS), where the map was compiled and completed.
