Hui-Bon-Hoa, Alan. "Identity and marginality on the road: American road movies of the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s". Thesis, McGill University, 2012. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=107914.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines two key periods in the American road movie genre with a particular emphasis on formations of identity as they are articulated through themes of marginality, freedom, and rebellion. The first period, what I term the "founding" period of the road moviegenre, includes six films of the 1960s and 1970s: Arthur Penn's Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider (1969), Francis Ford Coppola's The Rain People (1969), Monte Hellman's Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Richard Sarafian's Vanishing Point (1971), and Joseph Strick's Road Movie (1974). The second period of the genre, what I identify as that of the "minority" road movie, occurs largely in the 1990s and includes Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise (1991), Gregg Araki's The Living End (1992), and Spike Lee's Get on the Bus (1996). Emphasizing the cinematic worlds, narrative trajectories, and identity politics of the road movie, I argue that "founding" road movies, though usually homogeneous in their portrayals of identity, are significant for later minority road movies because they establish points of rebellion that negotiate between dominant and marginal social relations that minority road movies would later revisit. These minority road movies (re)interpret the generic raw material of the past, tapping into a number of subgenres as well as themes of marginality, freedom, and rebellion, in order to introduce new identities to the genre. Important to the many exchanges between the two periods is the interplay of subgenres; as I will discuss, many of these films borrow, critique, and subvert the generic precedents of the past.

ArcView and ArcInfo were used to identify and delineate areas contaminated by fluoride, sulfate, chloride, and nitrate in the Woodbine Aquifer. Water analysis data were obtained from the TWDB from the 1950s to 1990s covering 9 counties. 1990s land use data were obtained to determine the relationship with each contaminant. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to calculate relationships between variables. Land uses had little effect on distributions of contaminants. Sulfate and fluoride levels were most problematic in the aquifer. Depth and lithology controlled the distributions of each contaminant. Nitrate patterns were controlled mainly by land use rather than geology, but were below the maximum contaminant level. In general, contaminant concentrations have decreased since the 1950s.

Kells, Mary Eileen. "Ethnicity and individuality : Irish migrants in London, 1980s-1990s". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2000. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2271/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis attends to the question of identity, specifically ethnic identity, as it related to around 50 young, professional "Irish" migrants in London. My informants were male and female, Protestant and Catholic and had emigrated during the 1980s and 1990s, from the North and Republic of Ireland. I consider how these individuals constructed and represented their ethnic identities; how they enacted them, through choice of Irish or non-Irish companions, for example; and how, in more general terms, "Irishness" was imagined. I suggest that migration represented a "fateful moment" in my informants' journeys of self-discovery. Post-migration, they were able to re-evaluate their ethnic identities, away from the constraints of Ireland and the pressure of communal expectations which they had experienced there. This led to a selective identification with those aspects of their ethnic identities which they found they valued, as well as a rejection of those elements which may have helped prompt migration. Thus, in London, the content of their ethnic identities changed somewhat, as did their strategic, emotional significances. I begin with a literature survey and overview of the subjects of ethnicity, identity and migration in Chapter 1, turning to urban research methodology in Chapter 2. My chapters then present my informants' journeys in the order of their unfolding, beginning in Chapter 3 with life in Ireland, as it was recalled in London; initial experiences in London (Chapter 4); and the establishment of social networks (Chapter 5). In Chapter 6, I present case studies of three Irish organisations and Chapter 7 focuses on representations of "Irishness", constructed after my informants have had some time in London to reflect on these. In Chapter 8 I begin by considering the topic of integration, then assess the appropriateness of "ethnicity" as an analytic tool to describe my informants' choices and self-understanding. I also investigate the overall meaning and relevance of ethnicity. I focus on religion and politics, two potent areas in the construction of "Irishness", in Chapters 9 and 10, before presenting my conclusions in Chapter 11.

Ahn, En Young. "Translatability and 20th century Korean art (1930s to 1990s)". Phd thesis, Canberra, ACT : The Australian National University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/9520.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This PhD thesis is a critical inquiry into the (un) translatability of the 'difference' of an art produced in a non-'Western' context. My inquiries into the translatability of cultural differences do not deal with 'the incommensurability' of these differences, but explore the possibilities of their significant translations. This has been carried out in terms of case studies of four major Korean artists, their representative works, and the artistic developments of the 1930s-1990s in Korea. The artists in order are OH Chi Ho, PARK Seo Bo, SUH Se Ok and Kim Sooja. Each of Chapters 3 to 6 focuses on one of these artists whose work represents the most significant developments of colonial and 'postcolonial' Korean art, in reference to my theoretical arguments grounded in Chapters I and 2: the ideological and political discourses of cultural identity of a colonial and postcolonial nation's art; a marginalized nation's discourse of 'double translation' in cross-cultural transactions; and the postmodern and postcolonial concept of a 'peripheral' nation's hybridity. The term 'translation' in this thesis covers all kinds of translation: from translating the figurative to the literal, translating between different cultures and translating the past into the present. I will also use the term 'translate' as a metaphor for certain kinds of transference and dependence-linking it to Hegel's philosophy of self-consciousness and aspects of Lacan's psychoanalytic theory in order to illuminate and analyze problems involved in theorizing cultural identity and cross cultural transactions within the context of the current globalization in which geographical, economical, cultural and conceptual spaces are becoming increasingly hybrid. Throughout the thesis, Iuse the case studies of particular Korean artists as the basis of a critique of the nationalist Korean analysis of colonial and postcolonial Korean art, a postcolonial theory-inspired notion of the hybridity of an assumed peripheral culture/country (for example Korea), totalizing generalizations of 'Asianness' or 'Koreanness' of contemporary Korean art, and the Euro-centric concepts of 'cross cultural influence'. These studies focus on how certain Korean appropriations of 'otherness' of the 'exotic Western' imports within specific historical contexts have played an integral role in the ongoing process of conceptualizing and formulating forms of national and cultural identity.

Streszczenie:
This thesis discusses one of the primary questions of the debates on China, the question of the nature of Chinese transformation. It is suggested in this thesis that to fully grasp the transformation of China, we need to contextualize it within global neoliberal transformations since the 1980s. It is also argued that even if the transformation in China has been heavily influenced by global tendencies, we still have to recognize peculiar characteristics of Chinese transformation. Thus, the thesis aims to contribute to the scholarly discussions on the nature of Chinese transformation especially by way of critically engaging with &lsquo
Beijing Consensus&rsquo
, a notion that is relatively new and opens to the scientific debates. In the thesis, a decade-based analysis of the transformation in China is provided. In this regard, this thesis identifies the period between Deng&rsquo
s coming to power in 1978 and his Southern Tour in 1992 as the period of &lsquo
launching of the reforms&rsquo
. It is argued that the reforms introduced in the 1980s are of vital importance in terms of abandoning the legacies of Maoist period and the construction of the institutions of a capitalist market economy in China. On the other hand, the 1990s period that ends with the change of leadership from Jiang Zemin to Hu Jintao in 2002 is characterized as the period of &lsquo
consolidation of the reforms&rsquo
. It is assumed that the reform drive in the 1990s has a pivotal role for the consolidation of the current configuration of state, labour, capital relations in China.

Barrow, Ondine. "Charity, relief and development : Christian Aid in Ethiopia, 1960s-1990s". Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1998. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28961/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is about a charity, Christian Aid (CA) and the experience of that charity working in Ethiopia over three decades. The thesis looks at the evolving capabilities of CA in the world of relief and development. It asks whether CA has learned anything from its experience. The study looks at CA from the beginning of the 1960s through major famines and through a process by which charities have grown from small apolitical organisations to prominent political players, both in the southern countries where they work, and in the northern countries where they undertake publicity, lobby and advocacy. With changing priorities and demands on aid, practical experience on its own, has not been enough to ensure a coherent institutional response. There is a significant danger that CA has not had time to reflect on what has happened. This thesis provides an institutional memory, a historical reflection on CA's own development. The thesis sets CA in the context of development in general and Ethiopia in particular. It looks at the charity as an organisation, at its evolution and positioning within the broader institutional and theoretical setting. It explores the different levels of policy and concern within the organisation. The various paradigm shifts in development policy over the past 30 years are examined, setting up debates that had real meaning for the charity around a set of specific policy concerns in Ethiopia. The main body of analysis focuses on CA's performance in Ethiopia. The charity's experience of famine in the mid-1970s and mid-1980s is explored and its response analysed. How CA articulated development policies in Ethiopia from the late 1980s is examined. Throughout, the focus is on how CA has positioned its mandate, how theory related to practice and how the experiences of the past have informed the present.

The purpose of this study was to compare the political, economic and social problematic of Mexico in the early 1900s and the 1990s, using political caricatures as primary sources of information. To fully understand the Porfiriato regime during the early 1900s, images from the Mexican newspapers El Diablito Rojo, El Hijo del Ahuizote and El Paladin were selected and analyzed, while Carlos Salinas’ government of the early 1990s was studied through the caricatures found in La Jornada. The political caricatures demonstrated that similar conflicts existed during the early 1900s and the 1990s, such as the abuse of an authoritarian government, corrupt elections, an evident polarization between a small elite and the masses, the exploitation of the agricultural sectors, and a strive for the modernization of the country.

Molloy, Tessa. "New Zealand biography in the 1940s and the 1990s : a comparative view". Thesis, University of Canterbury. History, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1769.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The focus of this thesis is intellectual and literary history within New Zealand biography. Its central argument is that biographical writing changes over time because each era has new questions and needs concerning the intersection of history, society and individual experience which the genre of biography feeds. In order to study the changes in New Zealand biographical writing over the second half of the twentieth century, the two centennial decades of the 1940s and the 1990s have been chosen as periods of contrast, when an increase in national consciousness led to an upsurge in the writing of biography, and differences in biographical practice between the two decades were able to be identified. The topic has been divided into three main themes: biographies of 'Great Men'; biographies of 'Women Too'; and biographies of 'Significant Others'. Within each theme three biographies have been selected, one from the 1940s and two from the 1990s, and each discussed in discursive essays that delineate their main biographical concerns. The general characteristics of the biographies have then been evaluated within certain biographical principles that include: the choice and treatment of the subject, the relationship between the subject and the biographer, ethical concerns, the availability of sources, and the varieties of form. This made it possible to identify developments that took place in biographical writing between the two decades. The changes that were most evident were: an expansion in the range of subjects; greater impartiality by the biographers towards their subjects; the increase in availability of sources; the inclusion of greater detail in the fuller portrayal of a life; an increase in the professionalism of biographical writing; a conservative attitude towards the greater variety of acceptable forms. Initial assumptions were that biographical writing would develop in a straightforward manner changed by a maturing national consciousness and by trends in contemporary literary history. But it was not as simple as that. There were found to be similarities between biographies from the two decades, as well as differences. For every generalization that could be made, in this relatively small study, there were exceptions. While the selected case studies were all representative of types, all types were not represented. Nevertheless, those that were selected served to illustrate many of the changes in biographical writing in New Zealand that occurred during the fifty years under review. These changes were part of a general biographical approach that spanned a wide range of disciplines.

Streszczenie:
The wars in the Balkans in the 1990s inspired great interest in the historical, socioeconomic and political aspects of the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia. These accounts often referred to the actual events as the ‘Yugoslav tragedy’. Yugoslav theatre, meanwhile, received comparatively negligible attention. An overview of Yugoslav drama in translation points to an interesting trend. The plays which made it to Western Europe, particularly in the 1980s, were plays with a definite metatheatrical dimension. At the same time in Yugoslavia, metatheatre spontaneously became the most effective means of socio-political re-examination. The metatheatrical trend re-occurred with a very different function in the 1990s when the everyday Yugoslav reality was highly theatricalised in the media controlled by the Milosevic regime. In both 1980s and 1990s Yugoslavia, metatheatre essentially sought to examine the collective audience preconceptions. Yugoslavia’s most renowned contemporary playwright, Dušan Kovadevic, is the author of four metaplays studied in this thesis. Other internationally acclaimed Yugoslav metaplays of the period 1980-1999 studied here include Slobodan Snajder’s The Croatian Faust. Ljubomir Simovid’s The Travelling Theatre Sopalovic. Nenad Prokid’s The Metastable Grail. Biljana Srbljanovic’s Family Tales as well as Goran Markovic’s A Tour and Nebojša Romcevic’s Caroline Neuber. Contextually, the thesis also features analyses of older Yugoslav metaplays such as Ivo Brešan’s The Stage Play of Hamlet in the Village of Lower Jerkwater and Dušan Jovanovic’s Act a Brain Tumour or Air Pollution. The thesis is by no means a definitive overview of Yugoslav theatre and its contexts but primarily an exploration of the metatheatrical device, its political significance and its features in Yugoslavia of the 1980s and the rump-state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers the adequacy of existing theories of implementation of tertiary education policy, in relation to university amalgamations in the 1980s and 1990s in Australia. In particular the thesis examines the difficulties of mergers attempted in the case of Monash University (a successful amalgamation), the University of New England (a partially successful amalgamation), and the Australian National University (an amalgamation which never took place). The thesis argues that the best available model of policy implementation in the tertiary education sector is that set out by Cerych and Sabatier (1986), and that even this is less than adequate through its omission of several relevant factors, notably the factor of leadership. The thesis accordingly presents a modification of the Cerych and Sabatier (1986) model as well as suggestions for inclusion of factors omitted in the broader implementation literature.

Streszczenie:
During the 1990s the notion of the heritage film has become a taken for granted category of British cinema. Rather than dispute the merits of particular films that lie within this genre I question the construction of the relation between the idea of heritage and contemporary British film and television. Using the critical literature established by the contending cultural histories that address the rise of heritage in British culture, I highlight other, frequently personal and national engagements with inherited pasts. The concentration upon inheritance lends a greater emphasis to what is passed on from the past and endures in the present. The modes of articulating these inherited pasts are formally distinctive and constructed out of the vocabulary of documentary and fiction. The corpus of texts begins with the apparently radical avant garde film-making of Derek Jannan and moves through the work of the Black Audio Film Collective to the apparently conservative television documentaries of Alan Bennett. These key voices are then situated in relation to the hegemonic definition of heritage and current debates concerning British film and television. The persisting opposition which defined British cinema during the 1980s posits an unofficial cinema characterized by dissent and urban decay against an official cinema represented by the heritage film. My corpus of texts challenges this opposition. The different engagements with inherited pasts take place from different speaking positions and represent a diminishing publicly funded tradition of film and television production. The range of positions from margins to centre reveal that there was a contestation of the cultural sources which are aggregated into the construction of heritage during the 1980s and 1990s.

Streszczenie:
The thesis is concerned with British television classic-novel adaptations and their cultural significance. It interrogates at some length the arguments of comparative theorists and critics, and examines the implicit presumptions and conceptualisations that have determined their various influential approaches. The thesis develops an alternative understanding of these programmes, explicitly resisting a traditional comparative approach, and instead exploring a genre and the broader textual, cultural and social discourses within which it exists. The texts are conceived as sites of interplay between discourses about the past, the present, television and, reflexively, the genre itself, and are explored through close textual analysis that focuses on these concerns. British television classic-novel adaptations establish a generic microcosm that can be identified by its characteristic tropes of content (in particular, representations of the past), style and mood(s). Traditionally, this microcosm has been justifiably associated with nostalgia; however, whilst the nostalgic mode is still prevalent, generic development and the influence of (post)modern cultural discourses have resulted in the possibility of a wider range of meanings and consequent interpretations. In addition, classic-novel adaptations are necessarily and problematically situated within the context of the televisual, and the televisual context has impacted upon the genre's identity and development. The thesis elucidates the specificity of the televisual - highlighting its 'presentness', 'performativity', and intertextuality. The salience of a limited range of theories of the postmodern to the proffered conceptualisations of televisuality and (post)nostalgia is indicated. Informed by detailed conceptualisations of postmodern nostalgia and the televisual, the genre is examined textually, contextually and intertextually. The thesis therefore aims to reconfigure the theoretical assumptions behind the study of adaptation and propose an alternative conceptual and interpretative framework, grounding the study in detailed discussion of adaptations made in Britain over a twenty-year period (1980s and 1990s).

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the differences between teen romantic comedy films marketed to Generation X teenagers in the 1980s and Generation Y teenagers in the 1990s, focusing on the presentation of gender roles, consumptive behavior, and family. The 1980s films are discussed within the social context of the Reagan era and the conservatism of the New Right. The 1990s films are examined as continuing a conservative sensibility, but they additionally posit consumption as instrumental to achieving an idealized romance. Romantic comedy is traditionally a conservative genre, but these films illustrate female liberation through consumption. The source of difference between the cycles of teen romantic comedy is attributed to the media's attempt to position Generation Y teenagers as ideal consumers.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is devoted to a comparative study of the evangelical movement in the territory of the former Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1990s. The possibility to compare the two periods is due to their common historical trends of liberalization in government policy in relation to religious organizations, as well as the nature of the evangelical movement at this time. The thesis is to identify and analyse three key trends in the development of the evangelical movement inherent in both periods, such as the desire of the cultural establishment in the East Slavic society under the domination of other religious or ideological systems; the dynamic development of relations with the state; and the development of church structure and solving of church matters. In the study, the author argues that the gospel spiritual awakening in the 1920s and 1990s is directly related to the temporary decline in the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church, which treated religious minorities as competitors as well as the weakness of the state ideology. However, even after an active spiritual awakening the evangelical movement remained a minority and covered no more than two percent of the population. The author explores the relationship between evangelical churches and the state, which in both historical periods was undergoing transition and crisis. A significant difference which was found in the relationship for the two study periods is shown. The research investigates the particular church development and explains the reasons for the differences and similarities in the nature of church life and ministry of the evangelical movement in the 1920s and 1990s.

Streszczenie:
South Korea has long been touted as an outstanding model of economic development. Despite poor resource endowment and a large population, a colonial legacy, the devastation following a civil war, persistent political instability, and the lingering military confrontation with her northern neighbour, Korea's role in the international economic system has rapidly increased in importance since the 1950s. For nearly four decades, Korea has achieved a remarkable economic performance that transformed the country from a typical case of a developing nation trapped in a "vicious circle of underdevelopment", into one of the largest economies in the late 1990s. Several factors account for the Korean economic success, from high levels of domestic investment and savings and a growing volume of exports, to the improvement of the quality of life reflecting decreased poverty levels, longer life expectation and lower fertility rates. Beneath the economic success lays a system of "socialisation of private risk", a particular mode of organising the market, as the "visible hands" of a strong and developmental state was able to accelerate the pace of economic growth by identifying strategic industrial sectors, making discretionary allocation of resources to those sectors, and minimising the collective action dilemmas pervasive in most developing countries. Yet, how the developmental state's policy goals were designed, negotiated and implemented remains much of a "black box". This research argues that to understand the policy process in Korea, it is crucial to examine the central role played by Korean leaders and how their policy choices are shaped by the dynamic interaction of institutions, history, context, ideas and coalition politics.
