Streszczenie:
ArcView and ArcInfo were used to identify and delineate areas contaminated by fluoride, sulfate, chloride, and nitrate in the Woodbine Aquifer. Water analysis data were obtained from the TWDB from the 1950s to 1990s covering 9 counties. 1990s land use data were obtained to determine the relationship with each contaminant. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to calculate relationships between variables. Land uses had little effect on distributions of contaminants. Sulfate and fluoride levels were most problematic in the aquifer. Depth and lithology controlled the distributions of each contaminant. Nitrate patterns were controlled mainly by land use rather than geology, but were below the maximum contaminant level. In general, contaminant concentrations have decreased since the 1950s.

Holt, Jill. "Children's Writing in New Zealand Newspapers, 1930s and 1980s". Thesis, University of Auckland, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2315.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is an investigation of writing by New Zealand children in the Children's Pages of five New Zealand newspapers: the New Zealand Herald, Christchurch Press and Otago Daily Times in the 1930s and 1980s, the Dominion in the 1930s; and the Wellington Evening Post in the 1980s. Its purpose is to show how children reflected their world, interacted with editors, and interpreted the adult world in published writing, and to examine continuities and changes between the 1930s and 1980s. It seeks evidence of gender variations in writing. and explores the circumstances in which the social role of writing was established by young writers. It considers the ways in which children (especially girls) consciously and unconsciously used public writing to create a public place for themselves. It compares major themes chosen by children, their topic and genre preferences in writing, and the gender and age differences evident in these preferences. The thesis is organised into three Parts, with an Introduction discussing the scholarly background to the issues it explores, and its methodology. Part One contains two chapters examining the format and tone of each Children's Page. And the role and influence of their Editors. Part Two (also of two chapters) investigates the origins and motivations of the young contributors, with a special focus on the Otago Daily Times as a community newspaper. Part Three. of four chapters, explores the children's writing itself, in separate chapters on younger and older children, and a chapter on the most popular genre, poetry. The conclusion suggests further areas of research, and points to the implications of the findings of the thesis for social history in New Zealand and for classroom practice. The thesis contains a Bibliography and an Appendix with a selection of writings by Janet Frame and her family to the Otago Daily Times Children's Page in the 1930s.

Kells, Mary Eileen. "Ethnicity and individuality : Irish migrants in London, 1980s-1990s". Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2000. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2271/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis attends to the question of identity, specifically ethnic identity, as it related to around 50 young, professional "Irish" migrants in London. My informants were male and female, Protestant and Catholic and had emigrated during the 1980s and 1990s, from the North and Republic of Ireland. I consider how these individuals constructed and represented their ethnic identities; how they enacted them, through choice of Irish or non-Irish companions, for example; and how, in more general terms, "Irishness" was imagined. I suggest that migration represented a "fateful moment" in my informants' journeys of self-discovery. Post-migration, they were able to re-evaluate their ethnic identities, away from the constraints of Ireland and the pressure of communal expectations which they had experienced there. This led to a selective identification with those aspects of their ethnic identities which they found they valued, as well as a rejection of those elements which may have helped prompt migration. Thus, in London, the content of their ethnic identities changed somewhat, as did their strategic, emotional significances. I begin with a literature survey and overview of the subjects of ethnicity, identity and migration in Chapter 1, turning to urban research methodology in Chapter 2. My chapters then present my informants' journeys in the order of their unfolding, beginning in Chapter 3 with life in Ireland, as it was recalled in London; initial experiences in London (Chapter 4); and the establishment of social networks (Chapter 5). In Chapter 6, I present case studies of three Irish organisations and Chapter 7 focuses on representations of "Irishness", constructed after my informants have had some time in London to reflect on these. In Chapter 8 I begin by considering the topic of integration, then assess the appropriateness of "ethnicity" as an analytic tool to describe my informants' choices and self-understanding. I also investigate the overall meaning and relevance of ethnicity. I focus on religion and politics, two potent areas in the construction of "Irishness", in Chapters 9 and 10, before presenting my conclusions in Chapter 11.

Streszczenie:
This thesis discusses one of the primary questions of the debates on China, the question of the nature of Chinese transformation. It is suggested in this thesis that to fully grasp the transformation of China, we need to contextualize it within global neoliberal transformations since the 1980s. It is also argued that even if the transformation in China has been heavily influenced by global tendencies, we still have to recognize peculiar characteristics of Chinese transformation. Thus, the thesis aims to contribute to the scholarly discussions on the nature of Chinese transformation especially by way of critically engaging with &lsquo
Beijing Consensus&rsquo
, a notion that is relatively new and opens to the scientific debates. In the thesis, a decade-based analysis of the transformation in China is provided. In this regard, this thesis identifies the period between Deng&rsquo
s coming to power in 1978 and his Southern Tour in 1992 as the period of &lsquo
launching of the reforms&rsquo
. It is argued that the reforms introduced in the 1980s are of vital importance in terms of abandoning the legacies of Maoist period and the construction of the institutions of a capitalist market economy in China. On the other hand, the 1990s period that ends with the change of leadership from Jiang Zemin to Hu Jintao in 2002 is characterized as the period of &lsquo
consolidation of the reforms&rsquo
. It is assumed that the reform drive in the 1990s has a pivotal role for the consolidation of the current configuration of state, labour, capital relations in China.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The purpose of the study is to explore the trend in natural fertility and its components in China over half a century from the 1940s to the 1980s. One of the most important components of fertility, natural fertility and its secular rising trend in modern China, have never been systematically addressed, thus providing the scope for the present study. By fully using recent information on China's population and social development, this thesis documents and analyses the trend of natural fertility in China since the 1940s. The literature review of natural fertility and its proximate and background determinants comes as the first part after the introduction. An important methodological part of the study comes next. The main data sources are introduced, problems of applying Coale and Trussell's model are discussed and an adjusted version of the model is proposed. Finally, technical problems are also addressed, including such matters as modifying data sources to meet required measurements, assessing the limitations of estimated results, suggesting ways to avoid data truncation and so on. The major part of the thesis consists in the next four chapters, which involve a thorough demographic analysis of natural fertility levels and trends for the nation as a whole, and of different aspects such as urban-rural differentials, regional variations and educational divergences. The proximate determinants: fecundability and birth intervals, breastfeeding, primary sterility, and age at first marriage are also analyzed at length. Finally, the importance of socio-economic conditions on natural fertility change is analysed. The quantitative relationship between natural fertility and these socio-economic conditions was statistically tested and an analytical model was built, which proves to be well able to simulate the identified trends in natural fertility.

Streszczenie:
Over the past two decades, aboriginal peoples in Canada have become involved in the process of constitutional revision. As they became engaged in constitutional debates, aboriginal peoples developed a discourse that centred on historic rights, past injustices, and differences from the broader Canadian community. New terms and concepts which described these identities were introduced into constitutional language. An analysis of the testimony of the national aboriginal organizations before Special Joint Committees on the Constitution and the transcripts of the First Ministers' Conferences on Aboriginal Constitutional Matters reveals how aboriginal peoples attempted to reshape the political world through the Constitution. Aboriginal discourse has highlighted the role of the Canadian Constitution as an emblem of status and inclusion in Canadian society. Aboriginal peoples have sought recognition in the Constitution as a way to improve their status and gain symbolic admission into the Canadian state. However, they have sought inclusion according to their own narratives of their history, identity, and aspirations. These separate identities have been reflected in the words they have chosen to describe themselves and their relationship to the Canadian state. Aboriginal constitutional language has served to develop aboriginal identities and alter the terms of Canadian constitutional discourse. The discourse reveals some of the problems posed by aboriginal use of terms such as nation, sovereignty and rights, both for aboriginal and Canadian political leaders. Ultimately, the discourse poses new challenges to concepts of shared Canadian citizenship and identity.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In the 1980s the cinematic nuclear family flourished again after the self-explorative 1960s and turbulent 1970s. This thesis explores the portrayal of the idealized American family in film between the 1950s and 1980s. The 1955 film Rebel Without a Cause reflects the 1950s cinematic family model. My investigation includes the role of the father figure and the bonds in intergenerational relationships. During the early 1980s, films such Ordinary People and ET: The Extraterrestrial reflect the need to reevaluate the 1950s ideal nuclear family. My examination of these films continues to include the importance of the father figure and bonds between child and parents along with contemporary elements such as the use of psychiatry and rise of single-parent households. These movies' redefined portrayals of the idealized nuclear family represent the shifting dynamics of modern society in terms of single-parent households and highlighted importance of intergenerational relationships.

Streszczenie:
The paper focuses on the examination of the process of the Russian avant-garde canonisation. It investigates how the curatorial practice influenced the history of the early XX century art. The choice of the exhibition Paris-Moscou, held at the Centre Pompidou in 1979, as a case study helps to emphasise the influence of curatorial decisions on the art historical narrative. This subject is topical because it contributes to the emerging field of exhibition history. It is connected to the museum studies that point out the genealogy of a museum, and the problems linked with exhibiting the objects, such as contextualisation, the narrative structure, representation of identity and memory, and the very idea of heritage. It gives an opportunity to reflect on the tension between art and politics. The research provides examples which demonstrate that any canon is a result of authority relation. The methodology applied is in part an intellectual history with some elements of critical theory and discourse analysis. The thesis seeks to achieve the following goals: to reconstruct the chronology of the Russian avant-garde’s revival in the West and in the post-Soviet cultural contexts; to demonstrate that the valorisation initially contained some elements of cultural diplomacy, and to discover what forced the popularisation of this art and how it affected the historical truth and cultural memory. Keywords: Russian avant-garde, Curatorial turn, Institutional history of art

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the tensions present in left-wing projects of renewal in the 1970s and 1980s by examining the activism of one city; Sheffield. It finds that behind the 'Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire' lay a more complex set of relationships between activists from different movements, strands of activism, and local government. It sets out Sheffield City Council's attempt at a new left-wing politics, its form of 'local socialism,' and explores how the city's wider activism of trade unionism, women's groups, peace, environmentalism, anti-apartheid, anti-racism, and lesbian and gay politics was embraced, supported, restricted or ignored by the local authority. Despite deindustrialisation and contemporary discussions of the decline of class politics, there was a persistence of class and a dominance of the labour movement in Sheffield. Unsurprisingly archival evidence, oral histories, and photographs point to tensions between class and identity politics. Yet, the focus of this thesis on how a number of new social movements and identity-based groups operated in one place, and its detailed analysis of the sites, methods, and relationships of activism has revealed the extent to which tensions existed, not only between class and identity, but between the different subjectivities represented in new social movements and identity politics. In this way, Sheffield's activism sheds light on the wider British left, showing the resilience of class-based politics and how popular notions of renewal were limited by conventions of solidarity.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The wars in the Balkans in the 1990s inspired great interest in the historical, socioeconomic and political aspects of the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia. These accounts often referred to the actual events as the ‘Yugoslav tragedy’. Yugoslav theatre, meanwhile, received comparatively negligible attention. An overview of Yugoslav drama in translation points to an interesting trend. The plays which made it to Western Europe, particularly in the 1980s, were plays with a definite metatheatrical dimension. At the same time in Yugoslavia, metatheatre spontaneously became the most effective means of socio-political re-examination. The metatheatrical trend re-occurred with a very different function in the 1990s when the everyday Yugoslav reality was highly theatricalised in the media controlled by the Milosevic regime. In both 1980s and 1990s Yugoslavia, metatheatre essentially sought to examine the collective audience preconceptions. Yugoslavia’s most renowned contemporary playwright, Dušan Kovadevic, is the author of four metaplays studied in this thesis. Other internationally acclaimed Yugoslav metaplays of the period 1980-1999 studied here include Slobodan Snajder’s The Croatian Faust. Ljubomir Simovid’s The Travelling Theatre Sopalovic. Nenad Prokid’s The Metastable Grail. Biljana Srbljanovic’s Family Tales as well as Goran Markovic’s A Tour and Nebojša Romcevic’s Caroline Neuber. Contextually, the thesis also features analyses of older Yugoslav metaplays such as Ivo Brešan’s The Stage Play of Hamlet in the Village of Lower Jerkwater and Dušan Jovanovic’s Act a Brain Tumour or Air Pollution. The thesis is by no means a definitive overview of Yugoslav theatre and its contexts but primarily an exploration of the metatheatrical device, its political significance and its features in Yugoslavia of the 1980s and the rump-state of Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Ghai, Tara. "Fantasy films of the 1980s". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3551.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Fantasy films have been a part of cinema since the very beginnings of the medium. Although fantasy films can be found in every decade of the last century, the genre only became persistently successful from the late 1970s onwards. Perhaps the relatively recent prominence of fantasy goes some way to explain why the genre lacks the academic discourse that other film genres have encouraged. Another reason why fantasy has evaded considerable discussion as a genre could be because of the difficulty in defining it. Fantasy can encompass numerous types of films, and features an array of different thematic and visual styles. Previous studies examining fantasy either fail to consider the mode as a genre, or only consider a limited array of films. Using Tzvetan Todorov’s assessment of The Fantastic as a framework, this thesis examines fantasy films from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. I reassert fantasy’s position as a genre rather than a mode or impulse. Analysing a wide range of films from this period, this thesis outlines the preoccupations of the genre and identifies the various cycles and sub-genres encompassed by the term ‘fantasy’. These categories include those that concern the style of film and those that concern the intended audience. Deconstructing the fantasy genre in these sub-genres makes it more manageable to appraise the genre as a whole. Consistent patterns emerge in the examination of these films, ranging from archetypal characters to a fixation with subversion. The 1980s was a critical time for fantasy cinema as it was the first sustained period of frequent successful films. Fantasy was the most commercially successful genre of the decade; Hollywood’s output in this period still reverberates in today’s industry. Thus, the fantasy genre is most worthy of the critical discussion afforded to other genres.

Streszczenie:
In this study, the socio-spatial formation of a public place in Ankara, the capital city of the Turkish Republic, is analyzed between the 1950s and the 1980s. Within this framework, the focus of analysis is the Tunali Hilmi Avenue (earlier Ö
zdemir Street) as one of the main streets in Ankara. To understand experiences of daily life in relation to spatial constitution of a public place is vital for this study, because this opens the way for discussing the formation of a &ldquo
street&rdquo
as a public place where social forms and practices come into being in the city. Focusing on the socio-spatial experiences of people on a street as a public place, this study uses visual and written documents about the architectural and planning processes, as well as the information gathered from oral history survey about the experiences of individuals, in order to understand how public life and public place are shaped in a reciprocal manner, and how the spatial formation of a street is realized in relation to daily experiences of its inhabitants. The decades from the foundation of the Turkish Republic until the late-1950s are initially presented as the period when this part of the city transformed from a suburb of vineyards into a residential area. The main period of analysis in this study is from the late 1950s to the late 1980s when the Tunali Hilmi Avenue was formed as a significant public place in Ankara, acquiring residential as well as cultural, recreational and commercial functions to act as an urban sub-center in the city. Aiming to produce a comprehensive architectural history of the socio-spatial formation of the Tunali Hilmi Avenue as a public place, with reference to its public role in a specific period of time, this study examines this process as associated with the contemporary changes in the built environment and daily life of Ankara. From such a broad perspective, the study evaluates the unplanned formation of the Avenue as an urban sub-center not only as an urban or architectural entity but also as a social process.

This thesis considers the adequacy of existing theories of implementation of tertiary education policy, in relation to university amalgamations in the 1980s and 1990s in Australia. In particular the thesis examines the difficulties of mergers attempted in the case of Monash University (a successful amalgamation), the University of New England (a partially successful amalgamation), and the Australian National University (an amalgamation which never took place). The thesis argues that the best available model of policy implementation in the tertiary education sector is that set out by Cerych and Sabatier (1986), and that even this is less than adequate through its omission of several relevant factors, notably the factor of leadership. The thesis accordingly presents a modification of the Cerych and Sabatier (1986) model as well as suggestions for inclusion of factors omitted in the broader implementation literature.

Streszczenie:
During the 1990s the notion of the heritage film has become a taken for granted category of British cinema. Rather than dispute the merits of particular films that lie within this genre I question the construction of the relation between the idea of heritage and contemporary British film and television. Using the critical literature established by the contending cultural histories that address the rise of heritage in British culture, I highlight other, frequently personal and national engagements with inherited pasts. The concentration upon inheritance lends a greater emphasis to what is passed on from the past and endures in the present. The modes of articulating these inherited pasts are formally distinctive and constructed out of the vocabulary of documentary and fiction. The corpus of texts begins with the apparently radical avant garde film-making of Derek Jannan and moves through the work of the Black Audio Film Collective to the apparently conservative television documentaries of Alan Bennett. These key voices are then situated in relation to the hegemonic definition of heritage and current debates concerning British film and television. The persisting opposition which defined British cinema during the 1980s posits an unofficial cinema characterized by dissent and urban decay against an official cinema represented by the heritage film. My corpus of texts challenges this opposition. The different engagements with inherited pasts take place from different speaking positions and represent a diminishing publicly funded tradition of film and television production. The range of positions from margins to centre reveal that there was a contestation of the cultural sources which are aggregated into the construction of heritage during the 1980s and 1990s.

Streszczenie:
The thesis is concerned with British television classic-novel adaptations and their cultural significance. It interrogates at some length the arguments of comparative theorists and critics, and examines the implicit presumptions and conceptualisations that have determined their various influential approaches. The thesis develops an alternative understanding of these programmes, explicitly resisting a traditional comparative approach, and instead exploring a genre and the broader textual, cultural and social discourses within which it exists. The texts are conceived as sites of interplay between discourses about the past, the present, television and, reflexively, the genre itself, and are explored through close textual analysis that focuses on these concerns. British television classic-novel adaptations establish a generic microcosm that can be identified by its characteristic tropes of content (in particular, representations of the past), style and mood(s). Traditionally, this microcosm has been justifiably associated with nostalgia; however, whilst the nostalgic mode is still prevalent, generic development and the influence of (post)modern cultural discourses have resulted in the possibility of a wider range of meanings and consequent interpretations. In addition, classic-novel adaptations are necessarily and problematically situated within the context of the televisual, and the televisual context has impacted upon the genre's identity and development. The thesis elucidates the specificity of the televisual - highlighting its 'presentness', 'performativity', and intertextuality. The salience of a limited range of theories of the postmodern to the proffered conceptualisations of televisuality and (post)nostalgia is indicated. Informed by detailed conceptualisations of postmodern nostalgia and the televisual, the genre is examined textually, contextually and intertextually. The thesis therefore aims to reconfigure the theoretical assumptions behind the study of adaptation and propose an alternative conceptual and interpretative framework, grounding the study in detailed discussion of adaptations made in Britain over a twenty-year period (1980s and 1990s).

Streszczenie:
The main issue that this research deals with is the evaluation of the structural adjustment policies adopted in 1980. Their impact on the Turkish economy is assessed, and comparisons are made with the 1970s. Econometric methods are used to assist the evaluation and two models, based on the Klein model I, are developed and compared. This study also includes an analysis of the changes that occurred at the sectoral level (agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism) as a result of the 1980 structural adjustment programme. In addition, the thesis contains a review of the literature on structural adjustment. An overview of the Turkish economy is provided including the economic policies implemented by different Turkish governments in 1978 and 1979.The research findings show the need to stabilise the exchange rate. Inflation has been exacerbated by continuing depreciation. Domestic supply, in particular industrial production, is the key determinant of exports, not the exchange rate. In addition, floating interest rates, which rose substantially in the 1980s, appear to have a moderate positive impact on savings and credits. Also, the evidence suggests that structural adjustment has improved income distribution in Turkey. At the sectoral level, there is a need to increase investment in manufacturing, liberalise agricultural prices, and increase the role of tourism as a source of foreign exchange.

Streszczenie:
Choosing to Run: A History of Athletics and Gender in Kenya, c. 1940s – 1980s explores the history of gender and athletics in Kenya, with focus on the Rift Valley Province, from the onset of late colonial rule in the 1940s through the professionalisation of the sport during the last decades of the twentieth century. The first two empirical chapters provide a history of athletics during the colonial period. The first highlights the continuity of ideas about sport and masculinity that were developed in nineteenth century Britain and were subsequently perpetuated by the men in charge of colonial sport in Kenya. The next chapter considers how pre-colonial divisions of labour and power within Rift Valley communities informed local peoples' cultures of running. The absence of women’s running was not only the result of sexism translated from the British metropole to its Kenyan colony but also of pre-existing divisions of responsibilities of indigenous Kenyan men and women into separate, gendered domains. The second half of the thesis considers the impact of social change within women’s athletics internationally and of marriage, childbirth and education locally on female runners in the Rift Valley during the post-colonial period. Most women abandoned athletics once they reached maturity. Those who sought to do otherwise, as the final chapter argues, found that they could only do so by replicating the prototype of masculine runners that had already been established. Later, after the professionalisation of running allowed women to become wealthy, female patrons took this a step further by providing resources to those in their community in need, setting themselves up as 'Big (Wo)men'. This thesis uses athletics to reveal how gender relations and gender norms have evolved and the benefits and challenges that the sport has brought both to individual Kenyan women and their communities.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the differences between teen romantic comedy films marketed to Generation X teenagers in the 1980s and Generation Y teenagers in the 1990s, focusing on the presentation of gender roles, consumptive behavior, and family. The 1980s films are discussed within the social context of the Reagan era and the conservatism of the New Right. The 1990s films are examined as continuing a conservative sensibility, but they additionally posit consumption as instrumental to achieving an idealized romance. Romantic comedy is traditionally a conservative genre, but these films illustrate female liberation through consumption. The source of difference between the cycles of teen romantic comedy is attributed to the media's attempt to position Generation Y teenagers as ideal consumers.
