[In this paper, we address the problem of Gaston Bachelard’s (1884-1962) “epistemological silence” after 1953. Bachelard was a prolific writer: between 1927 and 1953, he completed 13 books on epistemology ‒ about one book every 14 months. However, at one point he stopped publishing works on the subject, although he continued to write about the poetic imagination. Michel Vadée and Olival Freire note the problem and point out possible paths, but leave their solution open. More specifically, Freire suggests that the issue may be related to an important position taken by Louis de Broglie, who, in 1952, breaks with the Copenhagen interpretation (adopted by Bachelard), proposing a theory that admits a non-probabilistic solution for Quantum theory. This turnaround by the most important French physicist may have shaken Bachelard's spirit. We believe we have found, in an article by Bachelard published in 1957, elements that allow us to resolve the issue.]

Abstract Stravinsky has a deserved reputation for manipulating the sound of words, which, among other factors, has given rise to accusations of “antihumanism” against the composer and his music. However, close analysis of the opera The Rake's Progress (1948–51) shows that Stravinsky actually takes care to set the text intelligibly, and at certain moments, even expressively. By analyzing metric displacement and motivic development as it evolved from the composer's earlier neoclassical settings—including Oedipus Rex (1927), the Symphony of Psalms (1930), and Perséphone (1934)—through his first efforts at serial composition in the Cantata (1952), this article contextualizes the seemingly anomalous expressiveness in The Rake's Progress. Discovery of this evolution in his approach to setting text also entails a reassessment of the composer's aesthetic concerns.

Based on the work of Dean (1927 and 1928) [1-2] and Cuming (1952) [3], the stationary flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid through a curved pipe of uniform curvature and with elliptic cross section is studied. The Navier-Stokes equations are expressed in toroïdal coordinates system (s,r,θ). Following Dean’s approach, the governing equations for the fluid motion through a curved elliptical channel are solved by using an original semi analytical method for the resolution of a biharmonic equation. The main interest in this study is to test and validate in the case of an elliptical cross section the proposed semi-analytical method. The latter can then be used for other geometries for which explicit solutions are not available.

“And the end of our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.” (Eliot, 1952, p. 145)In preparing this report I made the mistake of looking back in the literature, the literature not only of delusions, but also including some more general works of the earlier clinical writers, such as Birnbaum (1923), Conrad (1958), Jaspers (1963) and Kretschmer (1927). It was a humbling experience; these were obviously people who knew something about patients and about the realities of symptoms. For these writers, notions such as delusions were not just abstractions, not even just abstractions with operational definitions. These authors described real experiences of people, and their descriptions reflect the importance of studying patients from close clinical contact.

This article discusses John Dewey’s (1859–1952): Theory of valuation (1939), Art as experience (1934), A common faith (1934), The public and its problems (1927) for the socio-anthropological analysis of the religious. This pragmatist approach, attentive to intersubjectivity and experience, allows to work on aspirations and ideals, through giving place to emotions besides rationality in the valuation process. Further, the idea of public and pre-political, permits to pay attention to processes which are different from differentiation and where people contribute to the common good from their specific (minority) situation. In a pragmatist approach, believing comes in three modalities as ‘caring about,’ in the sense of giving value to forms of experiences and self-construction, respectively, to forms of self-transcendence, and to ways of connecting with the world (others and nature).

Streszczenie:
Abstract We have studied the seismograms recorded at the historic Berkeley (BRK) and Pasadena (PAS) stations for 20 aftershocks of the 21 July 1952 Kern County earthquake sequence. These events, in the magnitude range of MW 4.5 to 5.6, are too small to be studied teleseismically, yet they are important for better understanding the tectonics of the southern Sierra Nevada and the Tehachapi Mountains. On-scale recordings of moderate-sized events from this important earthquake sequence were first scanned, digitized, and then subjected to waveform modeling using a seismic moment tensor inverse procedure. In particular, the long-period, three-component Galitzen instrument at BRK and the 6-sec Wood-Anderson at PAS provided very high quality seismograms that could be analyzed in this manner. These two sites have been continuously operated from 1887 and 1927, respectively, and both are current sites of state-of-the-art broadband, high dynamic range instrumentation. First-motion polarities reported by Bath and Richter (1958) were used as additional constraints in the estimation of source parameters. There is considerable variability in the three-component seismograms of the 1952 aftershocks, which in turn result in a diversity of focal mechanisms. The majority of the solutions are northwest-striking reverse mechanisms that likely occurred on various mapped thrust faults in the hanging block of the mainshock. There are several events with northeast-striking, left-lateral mechanisms that are consistent with the strike of the White Wolf fault, as well as several normal slip events. The results of this study indicate that there are a variety of active fault structures adjacent to the White Wolf, Garlock and San Andreas faults in this region.

Recent molecular studies have shown that the genus Toxoptera is polyphyletic, and in particular that the name of the aphid known since 1952 as Toxoptera odinae (van der Goot) should revert to Aphis odinae (van der Goot), stat. rev. In this paper oviparae, alate males and fundatrices of A. odinae are described for the first time, from Japan. A. odinae is common as a grey-brown or rust-brown aphid on numerous plant species of shrubby habit throughout the Old World tropics and subtropics, but in temperate east Asia much darker forms occur, and Japanese populations of A. odinae include a dark green form not found elsewhere in the world. Multivariate morphometrics were used to confirm that both colour forms of the aphid in Japan were conspecific with samples from other parts of the world. Pergandeida kalopanacis Hori 1927 is a new synonym of A. odinae.

Abstract The article analyzes four works of poetry and illustration produced by the artist, poet, and occultist Marjorie Cameron (1922–1995) in the 1950s and 1960s. Widow of rocket scientist and occultist John “Jack” Whiteside Parsons (1914–1952), an early follower of Aleister Crowley’s (1875–1947) religion Thelema, Cameron was also a friend and collaborator of Beat artist Wallace Berman (1926–1976) and avant-garde filmmaker Kenneth Anger (1927–2023). In the 1950s and 1960s, Cameron delved deeply into Crowley’s magical writings alongside those of comparative mythologist Joseph Campbell (1904–1987). The article especially highlights how Cameron creatively adapted and re-worked the ideas of both thinkers in her artistic interpretations of her Holy Guardian Angel. A core argument of the article is that art, poetry, and esotericism were intertwined pursuits for Cameron, and that extra-textual sources (e.g., letters and biographical details) contemporary with the analyzed creative works are helpful in untangling their meaning.

The article discusses the stages of the formation of the methodological system of teaching classical harmony in the People’s Republic of China. Analysis of the historical reveals the peculiarities and problems of teaching this section of the corresponding academic discipline, established in the national system of musical and musical-pedagogical education. The internal logic of this process is determined by the following parameters: the nature of the correlation of foreign experience with national characteristics and the presence (or opportunity) of other modules in the structure of the training course. On this basis, seven periods of the history of the teaching of classical harmony in China’s music education were identified and analyzed: 1842–1911 (formation of prerequisites); 1912–1926 (accumulation of primary empirical experience); 1927–1951 (methodic model of the Shanghai Conservatory); 1952–1965 (introduction of the Soviet pedagogical paradigm); 1966–1976 (crowding out foreign artistic influences and values from the cultural space); 1977–1997 (restoration of the Soviet methodic model against the backdrop of the adoption in art practice of modern forms of “Western” music and the national style based on pentatonic; 1998 - up to now (reforming the system of teaching harmony).

Located at the foothills of the Sivalik Mountains, Chandigarh was the dream city of independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1952, Nehru commissioned the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier to design Chandigarh. Scholars often locate in Corbusier’s plans an urban modernity that required a break with the past. Moving away from such scholarship, this article will argue that Chandigarh marked a climactic moment in Le Corbusier’s career when he tried to weave together modern architecture with tradition, and through it, human beings with nature. A careful study of the cosmic iconography of Chandigarh clearly reveals that nature for Le Corbusier was more than a vast expanse of greenery: it was organized in symbolic ways, as a cosmic form emblematic of Hindu mythologies. I will argue that in addition to local conditions – economic and cultural – that impacted the actual execution of Le Corbusier’s plans, cosmic iconography shaped a modernism profoundly reliant on Hindu traditions. This iconography also inspired a new generation of Indian architects like Balkrishna Vithaldas Doshi (1927 – present). Doshi played a key role in authoring the postcolonial architectural discourse in India. Following Le Corbusier, he advocated an architectural modernism anchored in sacred Hindu traditions.

Absurdity in art creates bizarre juxtapositions that expose, and question conflicted, even dangerous, aspects of life which have become normalized. Absurd art appears in troubled times, subverting moments of extreme contradiction in which it appears impossible to think differently. For example, Dada (1917–1923) used nonsense to reflect the nonsensical brutality of WW1. The power to unsettle in this form of art rests in disrupting the world of the viewer and positioning them as interlocutors in a new framing. Absurdity in art reveals the absurdity that is inherent in life and its institutions, breaking the illusion of control. It can help us to comprehend the ‘incomprehensible’ in other species and spheres of life. In the challenge of anthropogenic climate change, how might the absurd capture the strangeness of current times in which a gap is widening between the earth we live ‘in’ and the earth we live ‘from’? This article explores qualities of the absurd in art as a possible way in which to grasp and reimagine ourselves beyond the anthropocentric, focusing on the work of the artists John Newling (b. 1952, UK) and Helen Mayer (1927–2018, US) and Newton Harrison (b. 1932, US), known as ‘The Harrisons’.

Indian woodland is a rich source of natural phenomenon, which maintains a gracious eco-balance and environmental potentiality. Ancient time scale to the present era Boscage is fulfilling needful action/desire, sourcing and supplying an enormous quantity of natural objects. So, the symbiotic relationship with the Copse area becomes a necessity for all life forms based on Indian woodland. There were many foreign invasions over the Indian Woodlands, of which The British invasion was remarkable, they were alluring India in the early 18th Century and permanently took charge of India as British India in 1760, ushering in monopolizing absolute supremacy over the Indian Boscage, they initiated a rule and finally an Act as Indian Forest Act 1865. The Indian Forest Act was amended in 1878 and finally enacted in 1927. Post independence India declared itself a Sovereign Democratic Republic State, but the Act remains the same. The Indian Forest Act is a piece of legislation enacted by the British Indian government in 1927. Its primary purpose was to consolidate and amend the laws related to forests, the transit of forest produce, and the duty levied on timber and other forest produce. The act aimed to regulate and manage forests in India, addressing issues such as forest conservation, protection, and revenue generation. The Forest policies were based on Scientific Management of the Forest, incepted since the 18th Century. The Policy guidelines were formulated to keep in view all aspects of the Forest that were practiced and emphasized factors like socio-economic, rural development, and environmental development as prime factors. Concessions were comprehended and extruded for the forest dwellers especially the Tribes in connection with livelihood sustenance. In this context, the 1894 policy of pre-independence, 1952, 1988 and 2018 policies of postindependence are mentionable for the same. The present sequel has been emphasized on the entire ambit of the tribal communities basically who are the forest dwellers since time immemorial. Collection of minor forest produces and uses thereof to maintain livelihood sustenance as offertory which executes a degree of dependence on the forest at the present day. Inclusion and exclusion determine the positivity of policy guidelines and practices that encourage the sustainable development of forest dwellers.

Streszczenie:
This article tackles the historical context, the genesis and the German reception of two different concepts of elitist governmental people’s instruction and public education drafted by two main intellectuals in the era of American progressivism – Walter Lippmann (1889–1974), journalist and former spin doctor of US-President Wilson (1856–1924), and the pragmatist philosopher John Dewey (1859–1952). The examination of Lippmann’s books Public Opinion (1922) and The Phantom Public (1925) and Dewey’s studies The Public and its Problems (1927) and Freedom and Culture (1939) reveals that both concepts are based on different notions of democracy, but on similar perceptions of modernity. Accelerated sequences of economic boom and depression, technological innovation, rapid social change and the seduction of mass media were seen as threats of public participation and of nationwide mobilization. These pessimistic notions of modernity as well as their implicit interactive perceptions of European socialism, nationalism and fascism facilitated the reception of Dewey and Lippmann in Germany. In doing so, German communication scientists, intellectuals, and pedagogues transformed terms like political leadership, community, action and creativity into the German context of nationalism and holistic community. But is this adoption a misreading or is this interpretation injected in the concept of both, Dewey and Lippmann? The comparison and reconstruction of these two concepts will show that their reception in Germany after 1945 was an amalgamation by intermingling different aspects of both models instead of a clear takeover of one model.

Streszczenie:
A tree-ring width chronology was developed from the Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis) in northern North China. To acquire a long-term perspective on the history of droughts in this region, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) from August of the previous year to February of the current year was reconstructed for the period of 1903–2012 AD. The reconstruction explained 46.6% of the instrumental records over the calibration period of 1952–2012. Five dry periods (1916–1927, 1962–1973, 1978–1991, 1994–1999 and 2002–2005) and three wet periods (1908–1915, 1928–1961 and 1974–1977) were found in the reconstructed period, and most of the dry years (periods) in the reconstruction were supported by historical records. Comparisons between the reconstruction and other nearby dryness/wetness indices and precipitation reconstructions demonstrated a good repeatability and high reliability in our reconstruction. Spatial correlation implied that the reconstruction could represent regional hydroclimatic characteristics on a larger regional scale. Significant periodicities and correlations were observed between the reconstructed data and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), which suggested that the hydroclimatic variation in northern North China may be closely connected to remote oceans. The significant and high correlation between the reconstructed series and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the eastern equatorial and Southeast Pacific Ocean indicated that ENSO may be the main factor influencing the regional climate.

Streszczenie:
The British architect John Voelcker (1927–72) was a founding member of the small international, avantgarde group, Team 10 (1953–81), an outgrowth of the Congrès Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM). Voelcker was one of six authors of the document, ‘Doorn Manifesto’, a ‘Statement on Habitat’ that emphasised ‘vital human associations’. The Manifesto appeared in 1954, one year after Voelcker exhibited the ‘Zone’, his Architectural Association senior thesis and one of the first acknowledged Team 10 efforts, in Aix-en-Provence at the ninth CIAM meeting (1953). The Zone (on which he collaborated with Pat Crooke and Andrew Derbyshire between 1951 and 1952), as well as a north London dwelling that he designed for Humphrey Lyttelton (1957–58), and his contribution to agricultural vernacular building projects in Kent, are prototypical examples of Team 10's work. Voelcker's distance from the large-scale, analytical rationalism of CIAM and his interest in a socialminded vernacular aligned him with Team 10. Voelcker eventually published three articles on Team 10: the most notable one in Arena (1965), as well as another in Architects' Year Book (1957) and a third in Carré bleu (February 1960). These situate him plausibly as a historian of the group. In one of these essays Voelcker advocates an ‘open aesthetic’ that is not clearly defined, but that implicitly calls on architects to avoid imposing pre-ordained symbols and to include references to the past in their designs without, however, being rigidly imitative, as was the case, he argues, with the deleterious medieval features of Milan's Torre Velasca (1957) designed by BBPR.

Streszczenie:
This article reconstructs the theoretical views of a literary historian and critic Ahapii Pylypovych Shamrai (1896—1952) in the context of perception of Oleksandr Potebnia’s philological and linguistic heritage — and at the same time in the context of the development of the formal method and sociological approach in Ukrainian literary criticism in the 1920s. The study offers a detailed analysis of Shamrai’s early work “O. Potebnia and the methodology of the history of literature” (1924) in the connection with Russian formalists’ critical approach to Potebnia’s theoretical ideas. In his early work, Shamrai calls for a rethinking of Potebnia’s theory of the ‘inner form of the word’ and some of his other ideas, which, in his opinion, could be the basement for the further development of Ukrainian and Russian literary theory. Particular attention is paid to the study of a reader (audience) as a major component of literary analysis and interpretation. The idea of ‘studying a reader’ was crucial when Ukrainian scholars tried to combine two theoretical approaches — the formal and sociological methods. One of the best examples of such ‘synthetism’ in Ukrainian literary studies of the 1920s was Shamrai’s textbook “Ukrainian Literature. Brief overview” (1927, 1928), which is discussed in this article. The paper also argues that “synthetism” was inherent to the Ukrainian literary criticism of the 1920s in general. It was a theoretical framework used by many Ukrainian literary scholars, Oleksandr Biletskyi and Borys Jakubskyi being among them. Providing a historical context for Shamrai’s theories, the article also examines the historical and philological ideas of his older contemporary Oleksandr Biletskyi and estimates their influence on the development of Ukrainian literary criticism of that time

Streszczenie:
The paper aims to reconstruct the research activity of the Ukrainian literary scholar Ahapii Pylypovych Shamrai (1896—1952) in the period from 1922 to 1929. For this purpose, the works of the scholar, his personal files, materials from the newspapers and journals of the time, as well as correspondence have been examined. It was necessary to describe A. Shamrai’s postgraduate studies at the Research Department of History of Ukraine (literary and ethnographic section) (1922—1924). Much attention is given to the textbook “Ukrainian Literature. A Brief Survey” (1927, 1928) that was among the first structured presentations of the history of Ukrainian literature. The paper analyzes the perception of the textbook by contemporary readers and outlines the specifics of Shamrai’s sociological method of this period. Considering the research work of A. Shamrai in the context of literary criticism of the 1920s, the author of the paper reconstructs the scholar’s dialogue with M. Zerov and the polemic with “New Generation” magazine. One of the central topics for A. Shamrai in the 1920s is examined in detail: it is his study of H. Kvitka-Osnovianenko’s work. In particular, the discussion between A. Shamrai and Ye. Aizenshtok on the publication of H. Kvitka’s works in 1928 has been highlighted. A. Shamrai’s scholarly concepts of the 1920s characterize him as a textual critic (‘text of the work’, ‘canonical text’) and historian of literature (‘literary fact’, ‘work’, ‘environment’, ‘style’, ‘literary school’, ‘template’, ‘minor writers’, ‘influence’). The category ‘reader’ was also very important for Shamrai’s works of this period. A range of examples shows how Shamrai used the methodology of comparative studies.

Streszczenie:
T.S. Eliot's “Burnt Norton” initially appeared in 1936, but eventually this poem became the first of the Four Quartets (1943), a cycle expressing the poet's most mature meditations on time and the timeless. The Quartets confirmed Eliot's already well-established position as a modernist poet, but they also suggested a new sense of spiritual resolution, in part reflecting his journey from religious doubt to newfound faith through his conversion to Anglicanism in 1927. Throughout his work Eliot had described moments of sublime spirituality, but these do not usually endure within the framework of the early poetry. In “Burnt Norton,” however, he embarked on a sustained exploration of time and transcendence. In a striking invocation of this theme, the speaker alludes to dance as representative of the human experience of timelessness:At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,There would be no dance, and there is only dance.I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where. And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time. (Eliot 1952, 119)Eliot's definition of dance seems paradoxical, claiming that it is neither still nor in motion, yet both. Its spatial and temporal locations are indefinable and unfixed; the place to which Eliot refers cannot be named—the still point is simply there—but the speaker cannot say where.

The Rhinella granulosa group consists of 13 described species with distribution from South America to Panama (Narvaes & Rodrigues 2009; Sanabria et al. 2010; Pereyra et al. 2016). Species belonging to this monophyletic group are characterized by their small to medium body size, ossified skull, small parotoid gland, keratinized cephalic crests and body covered by granules and spicules (Narvaes & Rodrigues 2009; Pereyra et al. 2016). These toads present explosive or prolonged breeding in temporary ponds of open areas (Borteiro et al. 2006; Mercês et al. 2009; Narvaes & Rodrigues 2009; Blotto et al. 2014), where eggs are laid in two long, uniseriate and gelatinous strings (Lima et al. 2012; Blotto et al. 2014; Pereyra et al. 2015). In general, tadpoles of these species are small, round and darkly colored (Blotto et al. 2014). Currently, only seven species have had their tadpoles formally described: Rhinella azarai (Gallardo 1965), Rhinella dorbignyi (Duméril & Bibron 1841), Rhinella fernandezae (Gallardo 1957), Rhinella granulosa (Spix 1824), Rhinella humboldti (Gallardo 1965), Rhinella mirandaribeiroi (Gallardo 1965), and Rhinella pygmaea (Myers & Carvalho 1952) (Fernández 1927; Kenny 1969; Carvalho-e-Silva & Carvalho-e-Silva 1994; Borteiro et al. 2006; Lynch 2006; Mercês et al. 2009; Blotto et al. 2014; Schulze et al. 2015). Pereyra et al. (2016) discussed the taxonomic identity of tadpoles described by Lavilla et al. (2000) as Rhinella major (Müller & Hellmich 1936), and following their concern we do not include these in our comparison. For the Rhinella merianae tadpole, there has been only a brief description (diagrammatic drawings and color patterns in life) in the tadpole identification key from Central Amazonia of Hero (1990) as Bufo granulosus. Therefore, we present in this paper a formal description of the tadpole of R. merianae and additional comments of its clutch size, measurements of eggs and spawning sites.

А. Кайгородова. Anatolii M. Kaigorodov was born in China in 1927, where his parents ended up after the Civil War in Transbaikal. He spent his childhood and youth in Trekhrechye, an area on the right bank of the Argun River, the border between Russia and China. In 1948 he entered the Harbin Polytechnic Institute’s faculty of Eastern Economics. As a student, he participated in the work of the Circle for the Study of the Manchurian Region, which was organized at the local historical museum of Heilongjiang Province (Director V. N. Zhernakov). After graduating from the Institute in 1952, he was sent to work in Shenyang and then transferred to Beijing. In 1954, like many Russians who lived in China, he left for the Soviet Union. In 1955, he joined the All-Soviet State Library of Foreign Literature. Fluent in Chinese and Japanese, he learned Mongolian, Vietnamese, and Indonesian. At the library, he worked as chief bibliographer, collecting literature and compiling scholarly bibliography, until his retirement in 1988. Anatolii was virtually the first to conduct research on the life of the Russian and Evenk population of Trekhrechye. His early work was published in the journal “Sovetskaya etnografiya” (Soviet Ethnography) (1968, No. 4, 1970, No. 2, 3, 6). Subsequently, many essays and notes were published in the newspapers “Zabaikal’skii rabochii” (Transbaikal Worker), “Sovetskoe Priargun’e” (Soviet Transargun Region), “Severnyi krai” (Northern Territory), and in the magazines “Problemy Dal’nego Vostoka” (Problems of the Far East), “Okhota i okhotnich’e khozyaistvo” (Hunting and Hunting Economy), and a number of other periodicals. Today, several monographs and many scientific articles have been written about Trekhrechye, including those published on the pages of “Traditsionnaya kul’tura” (Traditional Culture). Anatolii worked on the essay for four years (1990-1994), and the first version of the essay now being published appeared in a significantly abridged version in 1991 in the newspaper “Sovetskoe Priargun’e” (No. 114-116); some of its material has already entered scholarly circulation. It is now being presented in full for the benefit of researchers of Russian culture in China. The typescript of the essay is preserved in A. M. Kaigorodov’s family archive. The publication was prepared for publication by M. A. Kaigorodov (independent researcher) and V. L. Klyaus (DSc in Philology, Head of the Folklore Division, A. M. Gorky Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Walter Wilson Stothers was born in Glasgow on 8 November 1946. A third (youngest) son, he had the identical name to his father. From childhood, however, he had always been known by his middle name ‘Wilson’, so that his father, a Glasgow GP, would never be referred to as ‘Old Walter’. His mother, as Jean Young Kyle, had herself graduated in Mathematics in 1927, a rare achievement for a woman at that time. After attending the local primary school 1952–1956, Wilson completed his primary education in the preparatory classes in Allan Glen's School, then a distinguished Glasgow boys school with a scientific emphasis, progressing to the secondary school in 1958 and ending by becoming Dux in 1964. He also played in the school rugby first XV. From 1964–1968 he was a student in the Science Faculty of Glasgow University. His original intention was to take Honours in Chemistry and, indeed, he won the Chemistry prize in his first year. But he excelled in all subjects, winning the Faraday medal in the Intermediate Honours (second year) class in Natural Philosophy (Physics). After that he concentrated on Mathematics and became the top student, gaining a First Class Honours degree, as well as the Cunninghame Medal and a Jack Scholarship to Peterhouse College, Cambridge (1968). Before commencing postgraduate studies he married Andrea Watson in September 1968. At Cambridge from 1968–1971 he studied for a Ph.D. in number theory under the supervision of Peter Swinnerton-Dyer and graduated in 1972 with the thesis Some Discrete Triangle Groups. By then he was becoming aware of the strange realm inhabited by mathematicians that he seemed to be entering. So when his Cambridge room-mate Bob Odoni, at a research meeting they were attending as postgrads, asked, ‘Wilson, do you realise that we are the only normal people here’, Wilson felt compelled to respond, ‘What makes you think that we are normal?’

One of the peculiarities in the studying of the Vasyl Stefanik’s creative life is his relationships with the prominent Ukrainian singers Solomiya Krushelnytska (1872–1952) and Mykhailo Golynsky (1890–1973). Having strong national and cultural identity and talent they filled the artist’s spiritual life with new colors, impressions, and feelings. Being all-arounder personalities the singers paid tribute to the writer’s talent, supported him in his difficult period of life. One of Solomiya Krushelnytska, as one of the most famous women of ancient and modern Ukraine, made a strong impression on the young Vasyl Stefanyk. He was fascinated by her talent, beauty, temperament, and praised Solomiya' s voice and intellect. The writer carried this reverence for the singer throughout his life. Vasyl Stefanyk’s relationship with Mykhailo Golynsky was of a different nature. A native of Horodenka region, which borders the Sniatyn region, the peasant’s son Mykhailo, like Vasyl Stefanyk, was a great patriot of Ukraine, a romantic who dreamed of singing for his people. He was applauded by Lviv and Warsaw, Torun and Berlin, Kharkiv and Kyiv, New York, Ottawa and Winnipeg. He was compared to the great Caruso. As a relative of Marko Cheremshyna (Ivan Semanyuk), Mykhailo often visited him in Sniatyn. Vasyl Stefanyk also came here from Rusov. While in Soviet Ukraine in 1926–1930 (Odesa, Kyiv, Kharkiv), the singer became a link between Ukrainian writers and V. Stefanyk, who conveyed greetings to the Galician novelist and wished to meet him. Gaining prestige after his triumphant speeches in Kharkiv (then the capital of Ukraine), M. Golynsky, fulfilling the request of Professor Kyrylo Studynsky, appealed to the Minister of Education M. Skrypnyk with a request for financial assistance for Vasyl Stefanyk. In 1928, the Soviet government granted him a personal pensionfor propaganda purposes, and in 1931 he celebrated his 60th birthday in Kharkiv. M. Golynsky took part in the writer' s jubilee on June 17, 1927 in the People' s House in Lviv. The article’s key sources are the epistolary and memoir heritage of these extraordinary individuals.
