Four genera and 11 species of dexaminids are reported from the Great Barrier Reef. Of these, three species (Dexaminoculus grobbeni (Spandl, 1923), Guernea ipilya Thomas & Barnard, 1991, G. yamminye Thomas & Barnard, 1991) have been previously encountered on the Reef, seven species (six Paradexamine, one Polycheria) are new to science and one species (Paradexamine micronesicus Ledoyer, 1979) is reported for the first time from Australian waters. All species are described and illustrated.

The Berkeley fire of 1923 destroyed more than six hundred houses in the Northside district to the north of the UC Berkeley campus. Based on a comprehensive survey of newspapers, oral histories, archival documents, photographs, and video, this essay, Part 1 of a two-part series, describes the fire in detail, illustrating the horror and humanity of the event. Thus it sets the stage for Part 2, which details the efforts of industry lobbyists in 1923 and 1924. These efforts, we argue, contributed to the ferocity of the Oakland-Berkeley Firestorm of 1991 that killed twenty-five directly, and thirty-four indirectly.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kehidupan masa kecil DR. T.D. Pardede dan mengetahui peranan DR. T.D. Pardede dalam pembangunan baik dalam bidang ekonomi, bidang pendidikan, bidang kesehatan, bidang kerohanian bagi masyarakat Sumatera Utara. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah sejarah dengan pendekatan heuristik,kritik sumber, interpretasi, dan historiografi yang berkaitan dengan konsep-konsep sejarah.Teknik pengumpulan data diperoleh dengan menggunakan studi pustaka atau buku-buku yang mendukung penelitian. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kehidupan masa kecil T.D. Pardede sangat sederhana semenjak kehilangan ayah tercintanya, sehingga beliau dituntut hidup mandiri untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya dan ibunya. Untuk memenuhi kebutuhan hidupnya beliau meminta izin kepada ibu dan pamannya untuk memasuki kehidupan pasar setelah selesai jam sekolah dan ibunya memperkenankan beliau berjualan di pasar secara kecil-kecilan. Berjalannya waktu T.D Pardede semakin dewasa, beliau sempat bekerja di perkebunan milik pemerintahan Belanda di Dolok Ilir, namun pendapatan dari perkebunan tersebut dirasa tidak cukup sehingga beliau juga meneruskan usahanya dengan berjualan gula aren dan membuka kedai tuak (minuman khas batak). Upah yang diterimanya dari perkebunan dan usahanya sudah cukup, sehingga beliau membuka industri tekstil yang berhasil membuat dirinya dikenal banyak masyarakat Sumatera Utara dan menciptakan lowongan pekerjaan yang besar. Tidak hanya berkutat di dunia pertekstilan, beliau juga aktif dalam pembangunan pendidikan dengan membangun sekolah-sekolah dan yayasan perguruan, pembangunan perhotelan, rumah ibadah, pembangunan kesehatan berupa pembangunan akademi keperawatan dan Rumah Sakit Herna, dan pembangunan-pembangunan lainnya.

Cuando, el verano de 1940, los países bálticos fueron integrados a la Unión Soviética, la Cruz Roja Lituana fue, a su vez, incorporada a la Alianza de Sociedades de la Cruz Roja y de la Media Luna Roja.La Cruz Roja Lituana solicitó oficialmente, el 19 de octubre de 1991, la confirmación de su reconocimiento anterior por el Comité International de la Cruz Roja. The purpose of the article is to study the activities of Orel trade unions on the development of physical culture and mass work and sports in 1923-1991. Statistical and reference materials, documents of the Orel State Archive, sports veterans’ memories are used as the main sources. In the course of the study, the system analysis, the retrospective method, the method of historicism are used. The article analyzes the prerequisites for conducting physical culture and mass work and the development of sports by trade unions; the historical stages of this work are identified. The fact that the trade unions of the country looked for new forms of relations with the working class after the October Revolution is established. One of them was physical culture and mass work and the development of sports. Achieving these goals required a significant amount of organizational and financial resources. The activity of the sports society "Trud" was indicative in Orel region. It was established in January 1958 on the basis of voluntary sports societies of trade unions and club work carried out since 1923. As a conclusion, the authors point out that the formation and activity of the sports society "Trud" largely reflects the history of the trade union movement in Russia for the development of physical culture and mass work and sports in the Soviet period.

This work deals with the status and changes of Croatian National Minority (Burgenland Croats or Gradiscan Croats) in the Güssing County of Burgenland Federal State in Austria from 1923 to 1991. About five centuries of continuos existence of Croats in this area is now endangered with the remarkable decrease of their absolute number as a consequence of assimilation and emigration. Therefore many Croatian settlements which have existed there for many years thanks to relative isolation, are easily loosing its Croatian identity.

Es común que a los escritores que incursionan en temas indígenas, como la mitología, se les considere antropólogos. Sin embargo, esa aproximación también puede traducirse en artificios literarios que manipulan los datos etnográficos. El presente artículo reflexiona sobre el proyecto de compilación y reescritura de mitos adelantado por Manuel Mejía Vallejo (1923-1998) en Los abuelos de cara blanca (1991). El análisis se concentra en un mito embera, la historia de la serpiente Je, incluido en la novela, para concluir que, más que un ejercicio ‘natural’ de mímesis antropológica, a lo que se asiste es a una apuesta de etnoficción.

In Europa umfasst Eupontania die vesicator-, viminalis-, aquilonis- und crassipes-Artengruppen. Aus Nordeuropa werden 13 Arten der Eupontania-viminalis-Gruppe aufgeführt. E. brevicornis (Förster, 1854), sp. rev. und comb. n. (= Nematus congruens Förster, 1854, syn. n., Pontania carpentieri Konow, 1907, syn. n., Pontania pedunculi auct., nec Hartig), die Gallen an Salix cinerea L. hervorruft, wird in Finnland nachgewiesen und mit der eng verwandten E. arcticornis (Konow, 1904) verglichen, die Gallen an Salix phylicifolia L. bildet. Die Taxonomie und die Wirtspflanzen von E. pedunculi (Hartig, 1837) (= Nematus bellus Zaddach, 1876; Pontania gallarum auct. nec. Hartig) und E. gallarum (Hartig, 1837) (= N. aestivus Thomson, 1863, syn. n.; Pontania varia Kopelke, 1991, syn. n.; Pontania norvegica Kopelke, 1991, syn. n.) werden kurz diskutiert. El presente escrito abarca los antecedentes de la creación del Banco de la República, destacando las diferentes misiones que dieron origen al Banco Nacional y el Banco Central, los cuales permitieron la conformación del Banco de la República en el año 1923. Adicionalmente, se resalta la figura del Banco dentro de la Constitución Política de 1991, ya que esta le brinda las bases de una amplia autonomía tanto administrativa, patrimonial y constitucional. On 1973 November 23, there was a close approach (0.013AU) between (704) Interamnia as the fifth largest minor planet, and (993) Moultona. It was made an attempt to determine the mass of Interamnia from its perturbations on the motion of Moultona, using 82 right ascensions, 72 declinations, and of 1 observation the portion normal to the apparent motion, from altogether 95 observations from 22 oppositions 1923 January to 1991 February with a mean error of 0.″51. For the mass of Interamnia was obtained a result of 0.37 ± 0.17 · 10-10 solar masses. Although its uncertainty, this result gives an independent information about the mass of Interamnia besides the estimation from the diameter and the suspected density, considering the uncertainty of these parameters.

The subtribe Deronectina Galewski, 1994 (Dytiscidae, Hydroporinae, Hydroporini) is distributed in the Nearctic, in the north of the Neotropical region, and in the Palaearctic and Afrotropical regions. It is currently composed of 194 species and 13 subspecies in eight genera: Amurodytes Fery & Petrov, 2013, Boreonectes Angus, 2010, Deronectes Sharp, 1882, Nebrioporus Régimbart, 1906, Oreodytes Seidlitz, 1887, Scarodytes Gozis, 1914, Stictotarsus Zimmermann, 1919, and Trichonectes Guignot, 1941. We present a morphological and a molecular phylogeny of the species of the subtribe, and a revision of their taxonomy to accommodate our phylogenetic results. The morphological phylogeny is based on the study of 54 characters of the adults of 189 species and 2 subspecies, of which 114 species and the 2 subspecies were coded in the morphological matrix. For the molecular phylogeny we investigated 115 species and 11 subspecies, using a combination of fragments of four mitochondrial (COI, 16S rRNA, tRNA-Leu and NAD1) and two nuclear genes (18S rRNA and H3), analysed with maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. For both datasets we included the type species of all genus-group taxa. The morphological, molecular and combined phylogenies mostly agree with the current classification of the group, but in some cases our results are in contradiction with established genera. Most remarkable are the polyphyly of Stictotarsus and Nebrioporus, the low support for the monophyly and internal phylogeny of Oreodytes, and the low support for the monophyly of Deronectina with molecular data. Thus, we introduce some taxonomic changes in the current classification to accommodate the generic concepts to our phylogenetic results. Nine new genera are established: Clarkhydrus n. gen. (type species Hydroporus roffii Clark, 1862), Hornectes n. gen. (type species Hydroporus quadrimaculatus Horn, 1883), Iberonectes n. gen. (type species Deronectes bertrandi Legros, 1956), Larsonectes n. gen. (type species Potamonectes minipi Larson, 1991), Leconectes n. gen. (type species Hydroporus striatellus LeConte, 1852), Mystonectes n. gen. (type species Deronectes neomexicanus Zimmerman & Smith, 1975), Nectoboreus n. gen. (type species Hydroporus aequinoctialis Clark, 1862), Nectomimus n. gen. (type species Oreodytes okulovi Lafer, 1988), and Zaitzevhydrus n. gen. (type species Hydroporus formaster Zaitzev, 1908). Three genera are reinstated as valid: Deuteronectes Guignot, 1945 (stat. rest.) (type species Hydroporus picturatus Horn, 1883), Nectoporus Guignot, 1950 (stat. rest.) (type species Hydroporus abbreviatus Fall, 1923), and Neonectes J. Balfour-Browne, 1940 (stat. rest.) (type species Hydroporus natrix Sharp, 1884). This study aims to analyse the translation of Giacomo Leopardi’s Infinito in Romanian made by Eta Boeriu (1923-1984) and of some other modern translations of this poem in Romanian. The author demonstrates that the translation of Eta Boeriu is still the most refined one, so we will compare it especially with the variants of Lascăr Sebastian and Vasile Romanciuc. Using the concepts of Eugen Coșeriu’s translation theory (Coșeriu 2009), especially his references to meaning, designation and sense (Coșeriu 1991, 220-21), Damian focuses on the term “siepe” (“hedge”), on its role in creating the sense of limit and the infinity in the poetry and on its linguistic and cognitive synonyms in the different Romanian translations. The relevance of the topic is determined by the problems related to the formation of the country’s leader’s image in the foreign press. The purpose of this study is to identify the features of the formation of the visual image of Soviet leaders and the USSR from 1923 to 1991 on the covers of “Time” magazine, one of the most famous American magazines in the world. The article provides a brief history of the creation of the innovative and unique American magazine “Time”, analyses theoretical aspects of the formation of the leader's image of Russia and the USSR in the USA. The role of stereotypes in the formation of a political leader's image is examined in detail.

Drought assessment is very important to manage water resources in lean period. In the present study, identification of drought years and extent of deficit of annual rainfall is accomplished by use of three meteorological based drought indices like the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration index (SPEI), China-Z index (CZI) and Modified China-Z index (MCZI) on 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 month (short term and long term) timescales using monthly precipitation and temperature data from 1901 to 2002 at Sabarkantha to specify the drought conditions in present study area. The analysis of multiple time steps in drought indices make it harder to decide the best time step to show the drought conditions. The months of January, March, November and December have been identified 76, 79, 77 and 80 times as drought months respectively in the 20th century, indicating that these months must be provided with assured Irrigation. It is observed that 1904, 1911, 1915, 1923, 1974, 1987 and 2002 affected by severe drought condition in SPEI-12. The China Z Index and Modified China Z index shows that’s 1904, 1911, 1915, 1918, 1923, 1948, 1951, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1974, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2002 affected by extreme drought. The study also reveals that only 1% year obtain as extreme wet conditions. From result it shows that 23% years are categorised into moderate to extreme drought years, which includes 15% Moderate dry, 8% severe dry years.

The history of Oakland, California's urban forest was researched to determine events that could influence future urban forests. Vegetation in Oakland has changed drastically from a preurbanized area with approximately 2% tree cover to a present tree cover of 19%. Species composition of trees was previously dominated by coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia), California bay {Umbellularia californica), and coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and is currently dominated by blue gum [Eucalyptus globulus), Monterey pine {Pinus radiata), and coast live oak. Many forces throughout the history of Oakland have shaped the current urban forest structure. These forces include the gold rush of the 1840's, the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, massive afforestation of the early 1900's, and various fires from 1923 to 1991. These historical forces and the impact they had on Oakland's urban forest are explored. Future forces that can alter any urban forest are presented and discussed.

Two new species of the genus Kamaka Dershavin, 1923 (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Kamakidae) are described from Songkhla Lagoon in southern Thailand. Kamaka appendiculata sp. nov. has unique lamellate appendix on peduncle of antenna 2 in adult male. Kamaka songkhlaensis sp. nov. has swelled peduncular article 4 of antenna 2 and wide propodus of gnathopod 2 in adult male. Morphological characters of K. songkhlaensis closely resemble those of K. poppi Bamber, 2003 from Hong Kong and K. taditadi Thomas & Barnard, 1991 from Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Malaysia; however, K. songkhlaensis can be distinguished from K. poppi by the peduncular article 4 of male antenna 2 without distal spine and the convex distal margin of propodus of male gnathopod 2, and from K. taditadi in the right-angled posteroventral corner of male coxa 1 and the propodus of male gnathopod 2 without blunt triangular process on anterior margin.

A cidade de Curitiba foi um dos primeiros locais no Brasil onde a Linguística tornou-se disciplina universitária. Já nos anos 1950, a Universidade do Paraná formava seus estudantes em contato com teorias linguísticas. Em 1953, foram criados o Círculo Linguístico de Curitiba e a Revista Letras. Nos anos 1960, na então Universidade Católica do Paraná, os professores Eurico Back (1923-2003) e Geraldo Mattos (1931-2014) propuseram uma teoria de cunho estruturalista denominada Linguística Construtural (LC), desenvolvendo literatura substancial e formando toda uma geração de linguistas (BORGES NETO, 2013, p.17). O objetivo deste artigo é refletir sobre um conceito central da LC: a noção de fonema. Para isso, serão examinados alguns trabalhos de Back e Mattos, em especial, a Gramática construtural da língua portuguesa de 1972 e seu Manifesto, publicado no primeiro número da revista Construtura, e também uma entrevista feita com Mattos em 2011. Na análise, assume-se a atribuição de importância fundamental a entidades teóricas para a compreensão epistemológica dos pressupostos básicos das teorias linguísticas, tese defendida por Borges Neto (1991, 2004) e Dascal (1978, 2004).

Стаття присвячена сторіччю з дня народження двох знаних харків’ян – педагога, історика літератури, публіциста, професора Харківського національного педагогічного університету ім. Г.С. Сковороди Михайла Гетманця (1923-2021) і поета Бориса Чичибабіна (1923-1994). Метою дослідження є порівняльний аналіз біографій обох діячів з фокусом на їх професійній і творчій самореалізації в умовах тоталітарної політичної системи ХХ століття. Комбінація порівняльного методу і сучасного прийому відеомонтажу overlay (накладення кадрів / ефектів на інший кадр), застосованого у дослідницький площині, дозволила не тільки отримати більш повне уявлення про становлення обдарованої особистості в радянському суспільстві, але і спроєктувати його на наше буремне сьогодення – війну в Україні і відновлення тоталітарного режиму в Російській Федерації. У статті розглядаються такі ключові події, як навчання обох діячів у Харківському університеті; багаторічна праця М.Ф. Гетманця у Харківському педагогічному інституті; політика доносів і викривань, що панувала в освітянському середовищі; творча діяльність Б.О. Чичибабіна в умовах громадянської несвободи; політичні репресії і заслання. Особливу увагу приділено світоглядним розбіжностям М.Ф. Гетманця і Б.О. Чичибабіна на факт розпаду Радянського Союзу і оголошення Україною незалежності у 1991 р. У той час як М.Ф. Гетманець підтримав повернення суверенітету українською державою, Б.О. Чичибабін вихід України та інших республік сприйняв як втрату батьківщини, особисту трагедію. Зроблено спробу проаналізувати сімейні, психологічні і літературні чинники, які могли мати вплив на світогляди обох діячів. Звернення до біографій М.Ф. Гетманця і Б.О. Чичибабіна дало привід задуматися і над їхніми індивідуальними життєвими стежками, і над долею цілого покоління, якому довелося жити, любити, творити в умовах тотального контролю держави над особистістю. Історичні паралелі, проведені між радянським суспільством і сучасною Росією вказують на те, що уроки тоталітаризму минулого століття залишилися незасвоєними.

This paper is a sequel to ‘The Pakingtons of Harvington’ by Lionel and Veronica Anderton Webster, which was published in Recusant History in April 1974. There they only had room to discuss in detail the century between the purchase of Chaddesley Corbett and Harvington by Sir John Pakington in 1529 and the death in 1631 of his great-nephew Humphrey III, who had built the Elizabethan Hall with its remarkable priest-holes and wall-paintings. In continuing the story I have had invaluable help from the Websters’ genealogical and legal notes, which Veronica passed on to me in the summer of 1991, the year before her death; but their references have been checked, a great deal has been added, and the structure, the inferences and any errors are mine. The paper therefore appears under my name with these acknowledgements, rather than as a joint publication. I hope that in due course the trilogy can be completed by another paper on The Throckmortons of Harvington, 1696–1923’.

Hubert Rees was born on 2 October 1923 in Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, in Wales, and died on 13 September 2009 in Aberystwyth. Hugh, as he was known to his wide circle of friends and colleagues, was educated at Llandovery and Llanelli grammar schools. After leaving school he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) and in 1944 he became a Lancaster bomber pilot. On demobilization in 1946 he enrolled as a student at Aberystwyth University, graduating with first-class honours in agricultural botany in 1950. After a short secondment to the John Innes Horticultural Institution at Bayfordbury he took up an appointment as Lecturer in Cytology at the newly-formed Department of Genetics at Birmingham University. In 1958 he returned to Aberystwyth as Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Botany, being promoted to Reader in 1966 and ultimately Professor and Head of Department. He rapidly built up an internationally acclaimed school of study into the genetic control of chromosome behaviour in plants, and on evolutionary changes in chromosome organization. Hugh Rees had an impressive intellect and was an inspirational teacher who left his mark on all who came under his supervision. In 1983 he was appointed Vice Principal at Aberystwyth. He retired in 1991 and then pursued his many interests and hobbies. Together with his wife, Mavis, he was well known to many friends and colleagues for his generous hospitality, his love of good food and wine, and as a raconteur. Hugh is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters. Another son predeceased him.

In this study, the long-term mortality effects associated with exposure to PM10 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than or equal to 10 µm), PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than or equal to 2.5 µm), BC (black carbon), and NOx (nitrogen oxides) were analyzed in a cohort in southern Sweden during the period from 1991 to 2016. Participants (those residing in Malmö, Sweden, born between 1923 and 1950) were randomly recruited from 1991 to 1996. At enrollment, 30,438 participants underwent a health screening, which consisted of questionnaires about lifestyle and diet, a clinical examination, and blood sampling. Mortality data were retrieved from the Swedish National Cause of Death Register. The modeled concentrations of PM10, PM2.5, BC, and NOx at the cohort participants’ home addresses were used to assess air pollution exposure. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the associations between long-term exposure to PM10, PM2.5, BC, and NOx and the time until death among the participants during the period from 1991 to 2016. The hazard ratios (HRs) associated with an interquartile range (IQR) increase in each air pollutant were calculated based on the exposure lag windows of the same year (lag0), 1–5 years (lag1–5), and 6–10 years (lag6–10). Three models were used with varying adjustments for possible confounders including both single-pollutant estimates and two-pollutant estimates. With adjustments for all covariates, the HRs for PM10, PM2.5, BC, and NOx in the single-pollutant models at lag1–5 were 1.06 (95% CI: 1.02–1.11), 1.01 (95% CI: 0.95–1.08), 1.07 (95% CI: 1.04–1.11), and 1.11 (95% CI: 1.07–1.16) per IQR increase, respectively. The HRs, in most cases, decreased with the inclusion of a larger number of covariates in the models. The most robust associations were shown for NOx, with statistically significant positive HRs in all the models. An overall conclusion is that road traffic-related pollutants had a significant association with mortality in the cohort.

The Republic of South Africa was the first country on the continent of Africa to recognise the renewed independence of the Republic of Latvia on 29 August 1991. This paper provides an overview of Latvian-South African economic relations in the interwar period. In the interwar period Latvian and South African economic relations were mainly confined to foreign trade. Latvia’s foreign trade in relation to South Africa (then known as the Union of South Africa) was more or less regulated by Latvia’s 1923 treaty with Great Britain. Latvia’s main imports from South Africa in the interwar period were fruits (including oranges, mandarins, apricots, grapes, pears, etc.), tanning extracts and materials, paint and varnish extracts and materials, raw wool, palm kernels and oil, and furs and hides, whilst Latvia’s main exports to South Africa were fish and fish conserves (including “Sprotes”), confectionery and chocolates, timber and timber products, paper and paper products, plywood, and liquors etc. In general, despite a growth in trade in the 1930s, trade and thus economic relations were of marginal significance to both countries in the interwar period.

Цілком зрозуміло, що тісні дружні міждержавні стосунки між обома державами склалися після проголошення України незалежною. Особливо Канада підтримує Україну в теперішній, важкий час у протистоянні із російською агресією. Безперечно, офіційна Канада, не зовсім могла відверто говорити про українську державність до 1991 р. Але, очевидно, вона постійно відчувала тиск з боку української громади, мається на увазі 1920-1980 рр., щодо лобіювання інтересів Материкової Батьківщини. Відомо що Канада достатньо толерантно та приязно ставилась до змагань українців за свою державність. До 1923 р. на території Домініону функціонувало дипломатичне представництво Західноукраїнської Народної Республіки, представники української громади Канади були делегатами на Паризьку мирну конференцію після Першої світової війни, утворення та діяльність Комітету українців Канади (в подальшому Конгресу українців Канади), участь у відстоюванні українських інтересів першого канадського українця у Федеральному парламенті Михайла Лучковича, діяльність та промови Сенатора українського походження Павла Юзика – всі ці речі дають підстави говорити про увагу Канади до українського питання.

Résumé La mémoire des Inuit est ici appréhendée dans sa dimension géographique. L’étude se concentre sur les Inuinnait (Eskimo du Cuivre, Arctique occidental canadien). L’approche analyse leur système toponymique, recueilli par l’auteur en 1991-1992, et ses relations avec les récits de leur tradition orale collectés à trois reprises au cours du XXe siècle : en 1914-1916, 1923-1924 et 1958. La relation étroite entre l’espace et le temps est mise en évidence, la mémoire des Inuinnait articulant étroitement les lieux et les événements. Les références territoriales des récits couvrent l’ensemble du territoire nommé, mais la distribution spatiale de ces histoires se révèle aléatoire. La dimension spatiale apparaît comme constitutive de larges pans de la mémoire Inuit. Reprenant le concept de « géosymboles » développé par le géographe Joël Bonnemaison, on entreprend ensuite d’identifier les lieux du territoire des Inuinnait qui pourraient être qualifiés comme tels. L’identification conduite par le biais des analyses du chercheur est validée par les initiatives locales de mise en valeur du patrimoine Inuinnait, qui privilégient les lieux « géosymboles ».

The Early Oligocene to Recent genus Lirabuccinum Vermeij, 1991, is a North Pacific clade of rocky-bottom predatory buccinid gastropods. A re-examination of all available material from eastern Asia and comparison of this material with western American species leads us to recognize four northwestern Pacific species: L. fuscolabiatum (Smith, 1875) from the Pliocene to Recent; L. japonicum (Yokoyama, 1926) from the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene; L. branneri (Clark and Arnold, 1923) from the early Middle Miocene, also known from the Oligocene in the eastern Pacific; and Lirabuccinum sp. from the late Middle Miocene. The genus originated in the eastern Pacific and subsequently spread to the western Pacific by late Early Miocene to early Middle Miocene time. Lirabuccinum exemplifies a common pattern among rocky-bottom North Pacific gastropods in that the early species have a thick, internally strongly ribbed or denticulate outer lip. As they adapted to the colder boreal realm during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, Lirabuccinum and such other clades as Nucella, Ceratostoma, and Ocinebrellus (all Muricidae) evolved thinner, less heavily reinforced outer lips.

The article is devoted to the study of the biographical direction of publications in the journal “Library” (“Red Librarian”, “Librarian”). The result of de visu browsing was the formation of a bibliographic list (863 entries — information about 800 persons related to library and bibliographic activities). Four periods in the development of the journal, which coincide with the changes in its name, were identified: “Librarian” (1910—1916); “Red Librarian” (1923—1941); “Librarian” (1946—1990); “Library” (1991 — present). On the basis of this periodization the analysis of the content of the researched subject is built (the article covers the first two periods). It is shown that the traditions of the biographical genre were laid from the very beginning of the journal’s publication, supported and developed throughout its history. A wide range of publications covering the life and activities of different representatives of librarianship — from doctors of science to ordinary rural librarians — is noted. The most popular heroes of publications and the most active authors are highlighted. The relevance of biographical research at present is emphasized.

La Comarca Lagunera se caracteriza por una extrema variación en la disponibilidad de agua y por la carencia de datos climáticos amplios. Para extender en el tiempo las series de precipitación y de flujo; además de analizar la variabilidad hidroclimática de alta y baja frecuencia en la cuenca baja del río Nazas, se aplicó un modelo regresivo a partir de series dendrocronológicas de Taxodium mucronatum. La cronología generada superó los 500 años (1500 – 2003) y al compararla con la precipitación regional de verano (julio-septiembre) correlacionó significativamente (r = 0.83, p<0.0001). Una respuesta similar se obtuvo con el flujo estacional otoño-invierno (agosto-febrero), (r = 0.94, p<0.0001), con lo que se hizo la reconstrucción de las variables indicadas. La de precipitación mostró alta variabilidad interanual y multianual; sequías recurrentes sucedieron en los periodos: 1509-1520, 1548-1559, 1621-1622, 1684-1691,1758-1763, 1784-1789, 1809-181, 1846-1849, 1860-1865, 1922-1923, 1949-1956, 1962-1963, 1981-1985 y 1995-2000. Eventos húmedos con precipitación superior al 100% de la media reconstruida se presentaron en los años 1526, 1649, 1791, 1830 y 1991. Flujos reconstruidos con gasto extraordinario estuvieron ligados con el fenómeno de El Niño en su fase cálida, como los ocurridos en: 1717, 1725, 1752, 1805, 1855, 1870, 1880, 1888, 1894, 1904, 1925, 1947, 1958 1968, 1974 y 1991. Esta información puede ser usada por los administradores del agua y tomadores de decisiones en la Comarca Lagunera, para establecer la frecuencia de sequías y de avenidas extraordinarias con fines de manejo del recurso hídrico en la región.

Propõe-se a leitura de um conjunto de documentos localizados nos arquivos pessoais dos escritores Murilo Rubião (1916-1991) e Fernando Sabino (1923-2004), ambos alocados no Acervo de Escritores Mineiros, sediado na UFMG. Trata-se de dois grupos de fichas de arquivo, elaboradas pelos dois escritores como registro de dados acerca de pessoas (editores, escritores, jornalistas, políticos) que formavam suas redes de contatos. Cada uma das fichas contém as seguintes informações: nome completo o indivíduo; tipo de relação estabelecida por Sabino e Rubião com a pessoa (amigo, conhecido, colaborador); especificação das atividades exercidas (às vezes, seguidas de adjetivos de valor); endereço pessoal e telefone de contato; relação de livros de Rubião e Sabino remetidos à pessoa; especificação de gaveta e/ou pasta do arquivo rubiano ou sabiniano em que se encontra(va)m situados cartas, fotografias ou outros documentos relacionados à figura em questão. Assim, com o gesto de explorar esse material, intenta-se mostrar que além de se apresentarem como uma cartografia das relações de sociabilidade empreendidas por Fernando Sabino e Murilo Rubião, estas fichas, “autenticas” ficções do arquivo, apresentam-se como uma peculiar antologia de vidas insignes – isto é, de existências rearranjadas em discursos, personas, signos.

In this article, the life and works of Muhammad Hasan Mutrib Haji Tabib (1853–1923), a poet of the Khorezm literary environment, are analyzed using scientific and comparative methods. The devan manuscripts of Mutrib kept in the fund of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan with inventory numbers 903/IV, 906/VII, 2679/II, Laffasiy’s tazkira manuscript number 12561, and Matnazar Pirnazarov’s “Mutrib Khanakharabi (Risola–majmua)”, the creative heritage of Bolta Davlatov in the newspaper “Xorazm haqiqati” (issue of July 20, 1991), “Guliston jurnali” (issue 7 of 1974), Polvonnazir Bobojonov (Laffasiy, Tazkirayi Shuaro, 1992) and other publications. The poet’s extensive literary legacy, which includes manuscript and lithographic sources, press publications, anthologies, and chrestomathies, demonstrates the need for comparative research and scientific classification of his life and work. In their study, they discuss the poet’s personality and outlook, his life, and the literary–aesthetic factors that influenced his decision to adopt a pen name. As a consequence of the comparative analysis, the preparation of excellent editions of the Mutrib devan was identified as one of the most pressing tasks of textual studies.

Canon Professor Maurice Wiles (1923–2005) wrote this article in retirement. At the outset of his career he was an Evangelical (as his review of Barth, also reproduced in this centenary issue, indicates), but by the 1970s he had moved to, and continued in, a distinctly more liberal direction. A gradual realization of the ‘complexity of the issues involved’ in theology (and, not least, within the Bible) spurred this move, as this article suggests. His aim finally is to search for ‘an intellectual and moral basis for sharing conscientiously and wholeheartedly in the rich spiritual tradition of Christian worship, belief and practice, without blinding oneself to its faults’. As a young man Wiles was recruited to work on code breaking at Bletchley Park during the war. In maturity he held the Regius Chair of Divinity at Oxford from 1970 until 1991. He also chaired the Church of England doctrine commission that produced the liberal report Christian Believing (1976) and contributed to the controversial book The Myth of God Incarnate the following year. Among his own books were The Making of Christian Doctrine (1967), The Remaking of Christian Doctrine (1974), Faith and the Mystery of God (1982) and, using his patristic skills, his late study of Arianism, Archetypal Heresy (1996).
