Tommy (as he was invariably called by his numerous friends) Gold was a most unusual scientist in several respects. One of these is that at school and even as an undergraduate it never crossed his mind that he might become a professional scientist. Only a remarkable chain of events brought this about. He came from a very well–to–do family in Vienna. His father (who was Jewish, while his mother was not) was a hard–working senior director in a major industrial firm. Tommy admired him greatly. It seemed natural to Tommy that he would follow his father in business.

Raymond Lemieux was one of the outstanding chemists of the second half of the twentieth century. During the four decades from 1950 onwards he dominated the field of carbohydrate chemistry. His rare and special degree of insight into chemical problems resulted in numerous seminal discoveries and observations that influenced organic chemistry extensively, and provided the area of carbohydrate chemistry—and its associated subjects—with extremely significant conceptual and experimental tools. His work was a determining factor in converting this field from an academic specialization into one of great practical importance in chemistry, biology and medicine. His influential role was recognized when, with 21 world-renowned chemists, he was invited by the American Chemical Society to write his autobiography. The highly engaging series of books, Profiles, pathways and dreams , documents the development of modern organic chemistry through the research careers of chemists who made fundamental contributions to organic chemistry over many decades of research. Lemieux's contribution, Explorations with sugars. How sweet it was , is an excellent account of his research from 1946 to 1990 (50)*.

Frank Bonsall played a significant role in the mathematical life of the United Kingdom in the decades following the Second World War. He had a particular impact in Scotland and the north of England, especially in research and graduate education. His research interests focused primarily on functional analysis, the area of mathematics that brings together various strands of analysis under a single abstract framework, and on the related theory of linear operators on Banach spaces. He influenced a generation of young mathematicians with the elegance of his written and oral expositions, both of his own research and that of others. The quality of his caring and thorough research supervision was reflected in his many PhD students who would continue in research and go on to successful academic careers in their own right, both in the United Kingdom and beyond.

This thesis examines the impact of the Irish revolution on the communities of east Ulster between the years 1920 and 1922. It focuses on the mainly Protestant counties of Antrim and Down where loyalist violence was more intense and frequent than that of republicans. The aim is to explore the nature of loyalist violence and its relationship with the wider conflict in Ireland. Historians have focused their efforts on republican and state violence. By utilising hitherto unused sources, this thesis sheds light on the factors that shaped loyalist violence. It explores the importance of how events in southern Ireland influenced conflict in the north-east. Other factors are considered, such as the role of crowd psychology and territoriality. Loyalist rioters believed they acted on behalf of the unionist community, but the attitudes of ordinary unionists to violence were wide-ranging. This thesis explores these attitudes alongside the dynamics of popular unionist politics. It discovers that the unionist community harboured a diverse range of views on violence, the Unionist party leadership, nationalists and the British government. Many unionists took an active part in the revolution, most clearly by enrolling in the Ulster Special Constabulary. Questions are asked of this force, such as who joined and why. It is argued that ordinary people enrolled and in terms of occupational background the B Specials largely reflected east Ulster society. The assumption that the u.s.c. was recruited from more extreme unionists is challenged and structural explanations are offered for acts of unauthorised violence from special constables. The place of the nationalist community within the context of revolution and unionist militancy receives detailed attention. Nationalists were deeply divided between Sinn Fein and constitutionalists. This thesis offers insight on how this division manifested itself in east Ulster and how nationalists reacted to the revolution.

The years i 920-22 constituted a period of unprecedented conflct and political change in Ireland. It began with the onset of the most brutal phase of the War ofIndependence and culminated in the effective miltary defeat of the Republican IRA in the Civil War. Occurring alongside these dramatic changes in the south and west of Ireland was a far more fundamental conflict in the north-east; a period of brutal sectarian violence which marked the early years of partition and the establishment of Northern Ireland. Almost uniquely the IRA in the six counties were involved in every one of these conflcts and yet it can be argued was on the fringes of all of them. The period i 920-22 saw the evolution of the organisation from a peripheral curiosity during the War of independence to an idealistic symbol for those wishing to resolve the fundamental divisions within the Sinn Fein movement which developed in the first six months of i 922. The story of the Northern IRA's collapse in the autumn of that year demonstrated dramatically the true nature of the organisation and how it was their relationship to the various protagonists in these conflcts, rather than their unceasing but fruitless war against partition, that defined its contribution to the Irish revolution.

The Far Eastern Republic (1920-22) was a property-owning democracy, established and run by Soviet Russia with the aim of exploiting American-Japanese rivalry to oust Japanese interventionists occupying the Russian Pacific littoral. The Buriats under its jurisdiction were a northern Mongol people, Buddhists and nomadic livestock-herders. The thesis explores the complexity and interactivity of communist policies and the difficulty of reconciling conflicting aims within the revolutionary agenda. Changes undergone by the Transbaikal and its Buriats in the pre-revolutionary period are briefly outlined, focusing upon those resulting from modernisation and changing Tsarist policy. Special attention is given to the two main institutions of Buriat culture, its nomadic livestock rearing economy and its religious system. Buriat efforts to attain self-government during the Russian Revolution brought success under the Far Eastern Republic, but autonomy was difficult to establish. Communists would not tolerate 'bourgeois nationalists' of doubtful loyalty, while deep-seated inter-ethnic problems over land prevented delineation of an autonomous Buriat territory. Alienation of the huge Russian peasant majority could not be allowed as it would threaten communist control over the republic's democracy. Many Buriats had fled the civil war to settle in Mongolia. Russia wanted them to return with their huge herds of animals, partly to ease food shortages and partly to assist Comintern's aims. Distrust and governmental incompetence hindered this. Buddhists' fears of military conscription exacerbated this problem and helped to build a very strong 'anti-autonomy' movement in the form of the theocratic movement, led by lamas, seen by communists as 'parasites' who refused to work, but lived off the people. Although this movement echoed the sentiments of many poor Buriats who did not want an expensive autonomous administration which sheltered many enemies and exploiters, the association with religion ensured it was demonstrated and crushed by the communists.

By early 1920, literally hundreds of thousands of prisoners of war still had not been repatriated between Russia and Central Europe. To rectify matters a major humanitarian initiative followed, carried out largely under the auspices of the League of Nations. In a little less than two years, 427,886 people were repatriated. Of these, 406,091 were transported through the Baltic region. This paper highlights the important role of British officials in managing the ambitious project and emphasizes that Estonia, and Narva especially, played a pivotal role facilitating movement between East and West. The success of the venture meant that subsequent humanitarian agreements concluded in the 1920s built on international success rather than failure.

The syndicalist vision of ‘One Big Union’ resulted in the more limited project, led by Bevin, of the amalgamation of 22 road transport dock and waterway unions to form the TGWU. This chapter examines the process of amalgamation set against the impact of the economic downturn which resulted in high rates of unemployment and an attack on wage rates in the staple industries, coal mining in particular. The inconclusive fight back in which the TGWU as part of the Triple Alliance, played a major role, was held responsible for the ‘Black Friday’ 1921 and the subsequent defeat of the miners.

This chapter details the deaths of the people who died in Ireland in 1920. Some of these people were victims of targeted killings by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). On January 1, 1920, William Charles Forbes Redmond was transferred to the Dublin Metropolitan Police (DMP) from the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) in Belfast, to rejuvenate the Criminal Investigation Department. The IRA learned that Redmond was staying in the Standard Hotel on Harcourt Street because secure quarters in Dublin Castle were not ready. Redmond was shot on January 21, 1920. Meanwhile, Constable Luke Finnegan of the RIC was believed to be drawing up a list of IRA suspects. Finnegan, unarmed, was shot near his home on January 22, 1920. In reprisal, police wrecked fourteen houses belonging to prominent Sinn Féiners.

The article analyzes two prominent researches of the 1920–30th (World revolutionary propaganda by H. D. Lasswell and D. Blumenstock and The Language of the Red Army Soldier by I. N. Shpil’rein et al.) and proposes an attempt to look at certain aspects of Soviet science, particularly at the study of linguistic mechanisms of propaganda, not within the framework of a revisionist approach, but including it in the broader scientific and cultural and historical context. The analysis focuses on basically linguistic approaches used by the psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists of the USSR and the USA. The choice of these researches is conditioned, on the one hand, by the mutual interest of the two countries, on the other hand, by the fact that the problem of studying propaganda as a way of spreading communist ideas was equally acute for both countries, albeit with mirror-opposite goals underlying this interest. The analysis of the selected studies demonstrates similarities in study design and methodology. Refs 22.

Despite the fact that the study of the civil war was the most important area of interest for Soviet historical science, the causes of the civil war in the Black Earth region were insufficiently understood. The main provisions on the causes of the war were formulated as early as the 1920s-1930s and did not develop further. The content of the civil confrontation in the Black Earth region was considered the class struggle against the kulaks, who found political and military-organizational support from the Socialist-Revolutionaries of all shades, the Mensheviks, as well as officers and non-commissioned officers who spoke out in defense of their land ownership and against the food policy of the Soviet government. At the same time, the position that the internal war, due to local, regional reasons, in the Black Earth region began only in 1920-1921 also turned out to be unreflected.

Анализ специфики сюжетных рисунков отечественных набивных тканей 1920–1930-х гг. позволяет выделить художественно- стилистические особенности и выявить тематику композиций, варианты колористических решений и приемы композиционного построения. Поиск новых художественных решений на основе творческих идей текстильных художников 1920–1930-х гг. находит свое отражение в практике современных дизайнеров и студентов текстильных вузов, являясь актуальной частью учебных программ и конкурсных заданий. Analysis of the specifi cs of plot designs of domestic printed fabrics of the 1920s — 1930s allows you to highlight artistic and stylistic features and identify the themes of compositions, options for coloristic solutions and methods of compositional construction. Search for new artistic solutions based on the creative ideas of textile artists of the 1920s — 1930s is refl ected in the practice of modern designers and students of textile universities, being a relevant part of educational programs and competitive assignments.

The main aim of this paper is to study the mysticism of the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) in relation to her religious experience and her searching for existential answers through contact with divine entities. Although the identity of these figures is not clear, we are aware of their familiarity with Christian beliefs. Thus, in this paper we attempt to approach Af Klint’s Christian, metaphysical and anthroposophical message by analysing her notebooks. Particularly, we focus on the symbolic aspect of one of them made between 1919 and 1920, entitled Flowers, Mosses, and Lichens.

Most existing Re-ID studies focus on the short-term cloth-consistent setting and thus dominate by the visual appearance of clothing. However, the same person would wear different clothes and different people would wear the same clothes in reality, which invalidates these methods. To tackle the challenge of clothes change, we propose a Universal Clothing Attribute Disentanglement network (UCAD) which can effectively weaken the influence of clothing (identity-unrelated) and force the model to learn identity-related features that are unrelated to the worn clothing. For further study of Re-ID in cloth-changing scenarios, we construct a large-scale dataset called CSCC with the following unique features: (1) Severe: A large number of people have cloth-changing over four seasons. (2) High definition: The resolution of the cameras ranges from 1920×1080 to 3840×2160, which ensures that the recorded people are clear. Furthermore, we provide two variants of CSCC considering different degrees of cloth-changing, namely moderate and severe, so that researchers can effectively evaluate their models from various aspects. Experiments on several cloth-changing datasets including our CSCC and short-term dataset Market-1501 prove the superiority of UCAD. The dataset is available at https://github.com/yomin-y/UCAD.

В результате исследования прослежена эволюция творческого метода художника Густава Клуциса (1895–1938 гг.) в контексте развития искусства русского авангарда 1910– 1920-х гг., дано обоснование техники фотомонтажа как инновационной художественной практики. Дана оценка значимости творческих новаций Г. Клуциса для развития отечественного искусства ХХ в. Творческий метод Г. Клуциса сопоставлен с художественной практикой его современников К. Малевича, Э. Лисицкого, А. Родченко. The evolution of the creative method of the artist Gustav Klutsis (1895–1938) was traced in the context of the development of Russian avant- garde art in the 1910s-1920s. Tthe justification for the technique of photomontage as an innovative artistic practice was given. The significance of G. Klutsis’s creative innovations for the development of Russian art of the twentieth century is assessed. The creative method of G. Klutsis is compared with the artistic practice of his contemporaries K. Malevich, E. Lisitsky, A. Rodchenko.
