Streszczenie:
Whereas Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) has long been envisioned as a structuralist, quantitative, and positivist sociologist, some materials that Durkheim produced in the later stages of his career—namely, Moral Education (1961 [1902-1903]), The Evolution of Educational Thought (1977 [1904-1905]), The Elementary Forms of the Religious Life (1915 [1912]), and Pragmatism and Sociology (1983 [1913-1914]) attest to a very different conception of sociology—one with particular relevance to the study of human knowing, acting, and interchange. Although scarcely known in the social sciences, Emile Durkheim’s (1993 [1887]) “La Science Positive de la Morale en Allemagne” [“The Scientific Study of Morality in Germany”] is an exceptionally important statement for establishing the base of much of Durkheim’s subsequent social thought and for comprehending the field of sociology more generally. This includes the structuralist-pragmatist divide and the more distinctively humanist approach to the study of community life that Durkheim most visibly develops later (1961 [1902-1903]; 1977 [1904-1905]; 1915 [1912]; 1983 [1913-1914]) in his career.

SUMMARYSera from people born between 1883 and 1930 and collected in 1977 were tested for the presence of HI antibodies to A/FM/1/47 (H1N1) virus and three recently (1977 and 1978) isolated influenza A-H1N1 viruses. The highest frequency of high-titred antibody to the four H1N1 viruses was detected in sera from people born in 1903–4, i.e. 42,54,38, and 22% had antibody against A/FM/1/47, A/Hong Kong/117/77, A/Brazil/11/78, and A/Fukushima/103/78 respectively. The birthdate groups 1896–1907 showed a higher percentage of HI antibody titres ≥18, ≥50, ≥100 or ≥1600 against the four H1N1 viruses than the birthdate groups 1907–30. This indicates the existence of an era, 1908–18, in which, apart from the H3N2 virus (1900–18), the H1N1 virus was epidemic among the human population.

Z chwilą wejścia w życie Traktatu o Kanale Panamskim utraciły moc wszystkie dotychczasowe umowy, w tym najważniejsze: z 1903 r., 1936 r. i 1955 r. Pierwszy z układów obowiązywał do 31grudnia 1999 r. Drugi został zawarty na czas nieoznaczony i reguluje współczesny status prawnomiędzynarodowy Kanału. Dzięki tym układom Panama odzyskała władanie suwerenne formalne i efektywne nad całym swym terytorium: nad dawną Strefą Kanału, Kanałem Panamskim i instalacjami wojskowymi.

A new amphiboreal gamasid mite genus, Thalassogamasus gen. n. is described, characterised by two distinct dorsal shields (opisthonotum hypotrichous, usually with ten pairs of setae); peritrematal shield reduced and posteriorly free; setae al1, al2 on palp genu and al on palp femur entire; dorsal chaetome homogenous; opisthosoma laterocaudally hypertrichous; in female, epigynium whip-like anteriorly, endogynium with two thick sclerotic masss; in male, tritosternum fully lost, hypostome deeply cleft, cheliceral arthrodial membrane fringelike. The new genus includes T. sidortschukae sp. nov. (Chukotka and Okhotsk coast), T. kurilensis sp. nov. (Kuril Islands) and T. lindrothi (Sellnick, 1974) (Iceland) comb. nov. The female of T. lindrothi (Sellnick, 1974) is considered conspecific with the male of Parasitus (Neogamasus) anderssoni Sellnick, 1974, comb. nov., syn. nov. All three Thalassogamasus species are seaside dwellers, inhabiting sandy beaches, salt marshes, and seaweed accumulations. Keys to the species (females and males) are presented. Peculiar morphological aspects of the dorsal shields, peritremes, and leg tarsi of the new genus are discussed. For another littoral species of Parasitidae, Parasitus kempersi Oudemans, 1902, a new combination is established, Phorytocarpais kempersi (Oudemans, 1902) comb. nov. I, 130). I, 242–243).

The paper analyses two controversial historical stories about love related to the Serbian and Romanian Royal Courts, which caused stormy criticism and national scandals during the last century. Draga Masin (Draginja P. Milićević Lunjevica, 1867–1903), a royal damsel who became the Serbian Queen, was the wife of King Alexander Obrenovic of Serbia. Elena Lupescu (Elena Lupescu Magda Wolf, 1895–1977), a mistress, and later the wife of the Romanian King Carol II (first son of Prince Ferdinand of Hohenzollern – Sigmaringen and of Marie of Edinburgh), left remarkable traces in the history of Romanian monarchy. By confronting different perspectives we will try to show the (de)construction of the characters Elena Lupescu and Draga Masin during the 21st century. Entering the closed circle of ties with members of the nobility where blue blood must not be confused with unworthy blood and thus contaminated – the starting point of our paper is to identify the historical typological analogies between Draga and Elena by means of motives of blood and class identity. Recent historiographical tendencies shed new light on the earlier notions regarding these two female figures that are often condemned and considered taboo in society.

Specimens of four new nematode species of the family Comesomatidae were isolated from the sediments of littoral zone of South China Sea at the coast of Vietnam and described and illustrated. Sabatieria curvispiculata sp. n. is characterized by the long and slender tail, short cephalic setae and strongly curved spicules in males. Setosabatiera orientalis sp. n. is close to S. australis Riera, Nunez, Brito, 2006, but differs from it in the comparatively shorter and more slender tail, small-er number of amphidial fovea turns, greater number of precloacal supplements in males and shape and structure of spic-ules. Dorylaimopsis intermedia sp. n. is morphologically closest to D. mediterranea Grimaldi-de Zio, 1968 and D. magellanense Chen, Vincx, 1968, but differs from both species in the longer outer labial setae and absence of precloacal supplements in males. D. brevispiculata sp. n. is similar to D. turneri Zhang, 1992 and D. coomansi Muthumbi, Soetaert, Vincx, 1977, but differs from both species in the shape of outer labial sensillae and absence of precloacal supplements in males. A pictorial key for determination of valid species in the genus Setosabatieria Rouville, 1903 is given.

In June 1962 at the age of 87 years, Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1965) fell over in his hotel room at the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo and sustained a fracture to the neck of his left femur. He was flown back to London and the fracture operated on at The Middlesex Hospital by two eminent orthopaedic surgeons, Mr Phillip Newman (1911–1994), Consultant to the The Middlesex Hospital and The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, and The Institute of Orthopaedics, London, and Professor Herbert Seddon (1903–1977), Consultant to the The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, and Director of The Institute of Orthopaedics under whom Churchill was admitted as a private patient. Churchill’s recovery was complicated by the development of deep vein thrombosis. During his convalescence, Churchill befriended Seddon who recorded his time with him in his private papers. On 21 August, Churchill was discharged to his home at 28 Hyde Park Gate which had been modified during his admission and made a return to public life in November 1962 at a dinner at the dining club he had originally founded, The Other Club.

Abstract The discussion of floods in this paper covers the section of the Odra River basin from its source down to the mouth of the Nysa Klodzka River and the section of the Vistula River basin down to the Krakow profile. The area of the upper part of Odra River basin is 13,455 km2 and the length of the river bed in this section is ca. 273.0 km. In the reach examined, the Vistula River is 184.8 km long and has a catchment area of approximately 8,101 km2. Geographical and environmental conditions in the upper part of the Vistula and Odra Rivers basins are conducive to floods both in the summer and winter seasons. The analyses conducted for the 19th and 20th centuries demonstrate that two main types of floods can be distinguished. Floods with a single flood wave peak occurred in the following years in the upper Odra River basin: 1813, 1831, 1879, 1889, 1890 and 1896, and on the Vistula River they were recorded in 1805, 1813, 1816, 1818, 1826, 1830, 1834, 1844 and 1845. In the 20th century, similar phenomena were recorded on the Odra River in 1903, 1909, 1911, 1915, 1925, 1960, 1970 and 1985, and on the Vistula River they occurred in 1903, 1908, 1925, 1931, 1934, 1939, 1948, 1951, 1970, 1972, 1991, 1996, 1997 and 1999. The second category includes floods with two, three or more flood wave peaks. These are caused by successive episodes of high rainfall separated by dry periods that last for a few days, a fortnight or even several weeks. Such floods occurred on the upper Odra River in 1847, 1854, 1880, 1888, 1892, 1897 and 1899; while on the Vistula River only two (1839 and 1843) floods featured two flood wave peaks. In the 20th century on the upper Odra River, floods of this type occurred in 1902, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1972, 1977 and 1997; on the upper Vistula River, they were recorded in 1906, 1915, 1919, 1920, 1940, 1958, 1960 and 1987.

A list comprising 236 species in the family Gelechiidae from the southern Ural Mountains is presented. The material was collected during 1996–2007 on 21 different Finnish-Russian expeditions. The following new combinations are proposed: Caulastrocecis interstratella (Christoph, 1873) comb. n., Megacraspedus balneariellus (Chrétien, 1907) comb. n., Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867) comb. n., Megacraspedus lagopellus Herrich-Schäffer, 1860 comb. rev., Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926) comb. n., Scrobipalpa adaptata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n., Scrobipalpa dorsoflava (Povolný, 1996) comb. n., Scrobipalpa notata (Povolný, 2001) comb. n. and Scrobipalpa punctata (Povolný, 1996) comb. n. Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987 stat. rev. is raised to the species rank (from subsp. of N. sceptrophora (Meyrick, 1926)). Previously unknown females of four species are described: Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926), Monochroa nomadella (Zeller, 1868), Ivanauskiella psamathias (Meyrick, 1891) and Filatima zagulajevi Anikin & Piskunov, 1996. Trichembola neurophanes (Meyrick, 1926) syn. n. is shown to be a synonym of Megacraspedus fallax (Mann, 1867). Three separate species complexes are briefly discussed: Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, Stomopteryx remissella (Zeller, 1847) and Aristotelia subericinella (Duponchel, 1843); each of them seems to contain unresolved taxonomic problems. Three species are reported for the first time from Europe: Neofriseria mongolinella Piskunov, 1987, Stomopteryx mongolica Povolný, 1975, and Anarsia sibirica Park & Ponomarenko, 1996. The following species are newly recorded from Russia: Apatetris kinkerella (Snellen, 1876), Catatinagma trivittellum Rebel, 1903, Megacraspedus balneariellus (Chrétien, 1907), Megacraspedus niphorrhoa (Meyrick, 1926), Chrysoesthia falkovitshi Lvovsky & Piskunov, 1989, Metzneria diffusella Englert, 1974, Ptocheuusa paupella (Zeller, 1847), Ptocheuusa abnormella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1854), Monochroa parvulata Gozmány, 1957, Eulamprotes plumbella (Heinemann, 1870), Aroga aristotelis (Millière, 1876), Filatima transsilvanella Z. Wieś Niewiesz legitymuje się średniowieczną metryką. Początkowo należała do rodziny Chebdów herbu Pomian. W 1903 r. we wsi zawiązała się Ochotnicza Straż Ogniowa, w 1907 r. otworzono szkołę Polskiej Macierzy Szkolnej, a w 1911 r. zaczęło działać Towarzystwo Pożyczkowo-Oszczędnościowe. W czasie II wojny światowej uległy całkowitemu zniszczeniu kościół, budynek gminy, szkoła i dwór. Niewiesz w latach 1945‒1954 pełnił ponownie funkcję gminy, w latach 1954‒1972 był siedzibą Gromadzkiej Rady Narodowej i powtórnie w okresie 1973‒1976 zyskał status gminy. Od 1977 r. Niewiesz zatracił swoje znaczenie administracyjne. Położony jest obecnie w gminie Poddębice.

Three great Durbars, royal assemblages, were staged in Delhi by the Government of British India, in 1877, 1903, and 1911. These are particularly interesting as examples of explicitly political rituals, their purpose being to legitimate and popularize British rule in India. The rituals would therefore exemplify, for many social theorists, a form of political manipulation which employs symbolic action as an adjunct to raw force. Yet, while many anthropologists, at least, would reject, in favor of an analysis which addresses the political aspirations of ritual manipulators, any unreconstructed Durkheimian paradigm that would equate ritual acts with social consensus (Moore and Myerhoff, 1975:9), many would also reject, as Tambiah has, the notion that ritual, by nature, constitutes a ‘diabolical smokescreen.’ The more useful approach, in Tambiah's view, is that ritual is ‘an ideological and aesthetic social construction that is directly and recursively implicated in the expression, realization, and exercise of power.’ (Tambiah, 1979: 153)1 shall be working with a similar theoretical point of view and not, largely, with the opposed view that the ritual form is merely a strategy employed by manipulative agents to perpetuate, in Bloch's words, an ‘institutionalized hierarchy’ or ‘legitimate order of inequality.’ (Bloch, 1977:289)

Dragonets are one of the dominant species in Tosa Bay, Southwestern Japan. However, until now, there is no baseline information on the conservation status of its species and populations. This study gathered genetic and ecological data and information to analyze and measure the historical conservation status of dragonets in the Bay. Quantitative values were converted into qualitative ranges to measures the conservation status of dragonet species. Eight dragonet species/populations were found to be in stable condition in the early 1990s, namely: Callionymus planus Ochiai, 1955; Callionymus lunatus Temminck and Schlegel, 1845; Callionymus curvicornis Valenciennes, 1837; Callionymus japonicus Houttuyn, 1782; Callionymus enneactis Bleeker, 1879; Synchiropus altivelis (Temminck and Schlegel, 1845); Repomucenus virgis (Jordan and Fowler, 1903); and Repomucenus huguenini Bleeker, 1858. Others were globally endangered and rare (Callionymus draconis Nakabo, 1977), locally highly vulnerable (Callionymus valenciennei Temminck and Schlegel, 1845; Callionymus beniteguri (Jordan and Snyder, 1900), locally vulnerable (Callionymus formosanus Fricke, 1981; Bathycallionymus kaianus (Günther, 1981)), and globally highly vulnerable (Callionymus sokonumeri Kamohara, 1936). The information gained in this study provided baseline knowledge on the historical species risk status of dragonets in Tosa Bay, which can be used as a basis for future studies. It also provided some scientifically-based options for managing biodiversity in a defined spatial management unit, which is applicable to e.g., marine protected areas, parks, bays, islands, lakes, etc.

A tree-ring width chronology was developed from the Chinese pine (Pinus tabuliformis) in northern North China. To acquire a long-term perspective on the history of droughts in this region, the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) from August of the previous year to February of the current year was reconstructed for the period of 1903–2012 AD. The reconstruction explained 46.6% of the instrumental records over the calibration period of 1952–2012. Five dry periods (1916–1927, 1962–1973, 1978–1991, 1994–1999 and 2002–2005) and three wet periods (1908–1915, 1928–1961 and 1974–1977) were found in the reconstructed period, and most of the dry years (periods) in the reconstruction were supported by historical records. Comparisons between the reconstruction and other nearby dryness/wetness indices and precipitation reconstructions demonstrated a good repeatability and high reliability in our reconstruction. Spatial correlation implied that the reconstruction could represent regional hydroclimatic characteristics on a larger regional scale. Significant periodicities and correlations were observed between the reconstructed data and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), which suggested that the hydroclimatic variation in northern North China may be closely connected to remote oceans. The significant and high correlation between the reconstructed series and sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the eastern equatorial and Southeast Pacific Ocean indicated that ENSO may be the main factor influencing the regional climate.

1. Salary scales have been widely used in actuarial literature about pension schemes, but they do not seem to have been developed beyond the idea first introduced by Manly (1901) and used in a series of papers following this, including McGowan (1901), Manly (1902, 1903 and 1911), and M'Lauchlan (1908). King (1905), Bacon (1907) and M'Lauchlan (1914) discuss the construction of a salary scale from records of individual employees. King made some valuable observations on how a salary scale may change with time if the observed population is not a stationary one, for example, because the firm is growing or declining, which Bacon also commented on, and M'Lauchlan went into considerable detail about the separation of different grades. Thomas (1913) gave an example of an organization with six ranks, within each of which there was a salary scale, and showed explicit probabilities of promotion in each year of age. His development comes closest to what I shall discuss below. Text books on Life Contingencies, such as Jordan (1952), Hooker & Longley-Cook (1957) and most recently Neill (1977), have followed essentially the definition introduced by Manly, as also have papers and text books on pension funds, such as Porteous (1936), Marples (1948), Heywood & Marples (1950), Crabbe & Poyser (1953) and Lee (1973). Curiously Spurgeon (1922) does not mention salary scales, although his book was written after they had come into use.

Eggs of Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) have been collected from the mouth of rivers or inshore waters of salinity greater than 30 p.p.t. (Barnabé, 1978; Kennedy & Fitzmaurice, 1972). The main spawning period is between April and June (Kelley, 1979; Kennedy & Fitzmaurice, 1968), though ripe males have been reported as early as February and as late as mid-July (Kennedy & Fitzmaurice, 1972). The fertilised eggs 1·15—1·51 mm in diameter, are pelagic, take between two and five days to hatch and the prolarvae are 3·25—4·05 mm in length when they emerge (Barnabé, 1976; Bertolini, 1933, pp. 310–331; Lumare & Villani, 1973; Jackman, 1954). Postlarval stages have been recorded from the Bristol Channel in mid-June and mid-July (Russell, 1980) as well as off Plymouth between mid-March and mid-July (Russell, 1935, 1976; Russell & Demir, 1971). Although a few juveniles have been encountered, from the middle and lower reaches of estuaries, during their first summer (Kennedy & Fitzmaurice, 1972), it is not until the autumn/winter that relatively large numbers of o + bass have been reported from British estuaries (Claridge & Potter, 1983; Hardisty & Huggins, 1975; Hartley, 1940; Murie, 1903; Van den Broek, 1977; Wheeler, 1979). Juvenile bass have also been recorded from lagoons and coastal waters, during their first summer, indicating that these are important nursery areas (Arias, 1980; Barnabé, 1978; Chervinski & Lourie, 1972; Ferrari & Chieregato, 1981; Gandolfi, Rossi & Tongiorgi, 1981).

Although Vojislav Vučković (1910-1942) did not leave an elaborate and selfcontained theoretical system behind, his creativity can nevertheless be perceived from a relatively integral perspective, thanks to collections of papers published posthumously. It should be kept in mind that our great composer lost his life at the pinnacle of productivity; hence, we can safely say that his work was interrupted in every sense of the word, and thus left somewhat fragmentary. There is a very significant difference between the views on problem solving he advocated in his early essays and those he promoted before and during the war, given that the timespan involved is just ten years (1932-1942). Based on these theoretical wanderings, one could assume that Vučković was following the intensive changes on the West European theoretical stage of his time, endeavouring to shape his standpoints in a dialogue with the main theoretical currents. In this text, I will try to highlight the possible connections between some of Vuþkoviügs views and the theories which left an important imprint on the cultural life of Europe between the wars, such as the theory of reflection by Todor Pavlov (1890-1977) and critical (aesthetical) theory by Theodor Adorno (1903-1969) and Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). It should be said that Vučković used Pavlov's theory directly, but in a quite distinctive way which, alongside the theoretical trends of the upcoming generation of Marxist thinkers, was close to the critical standpoints of distinguished members of the Frankfurt School, who in those years, like Vučković, were writing new chapters of the history of aesthetics

Species of the arboreal leafhopper subfamily Eurymelinae formerly included in Idiocerinae (i.e., excluding Macropsini) from the Indian subcontinent are reviewed. Three tribes, Balocerini, Idiocerini and Megipocerini are represented in the subcontinent. The tribes, genera and species are diagnosed and the species are illustrated with an emphasis on the female genitalia. The species in the genus Idioscopus are revised and assigned to new genera. Species groups are recognized in the genus Idioscopus sensu stricto based on forewing venation, head sculpturing and male genitalia. The following new taxa are described and illustrated: Balocha fuscolinea sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), Bellacerus gen. nov. (type species: Idioscopus bellus Viraktamath), Busonia distanti sp. nov. (Nepal; India: Meghalaya), B. manipurensis sp. nov. (India: Manipur), Jogina gen. nov. (type species: Idioscopus robustipennis Viraktamth), Keralus gen. nov. (type species: Idioscopus webbi Viraktamath), Matangia gen. nov. (type species: Idioscopus capriliana Viraktamath & Murphy), M. kodaiensis sp. nov. (India: Tamil Nadu), Metidiocerus gnezdilovi sp. nov. (India: Jammu & Kashmir), Ulavius gen. nov. (type species: Idioscopus anasuyae Viraktamath & Viraktamath), U. parvathiae sp. nov. (India: Karnataka), U. poornachandrai sp. nov. (India: Karnataka) and U. radhamaniae sp. nov. (India: Karnataka). The genus Metidocerus Ossiannilsson is recorded for the first time from the subcontinent. Busonia amentata Distant is redescribed based on one male paratype from Myitta (Myanmar) and it is shown that the specimen identified as this species by Maldonado-Capriles (1977) is in error. Idiocerus quinquepunctatus Melichar 1903 earlier considered as a junior synonym of I. atkinsoni Lethierry 1889, is resurrected from synonymy and Amritodus brevistylus Viraktamath 1976 syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of I. quinquepunctatus. Idioscopus scutellatus (Distant 1908) syn. nov. is considered as a junior synonym of I. clypealis (Lethierry 1898). Balocha anufrievi Kameswara Rao & Ramakrishnan 1979 syn. nov., B. bifurcata Kamswara Rao, Ramakrishanan & Ghai 1979 syn. nov. and B. maldonadoi Kamswara Rao & Ramakrishan 1979 syn. nov. are treated as junior synonms of the wide-spread B. astuta (Melichar 1903) described from Sri Lanka. The following new combinations are proposed: Amritodus quinquepunctataus (Melichar) comb. nov., Bellacerus bellus (Viraktamath) comb. nov., Jogina robustipennis (Viraktamath) comb. nov., Keralus webbi (Viraktamath) comb. nov., Matangia capriliana (Viraktamath & Murphy) comb. nov., M. indica (Viraktamath) comb. nov., M. thapai (Viraktamath & Hongsaprug) comb. nov., Metidiocerus deodarae (Viraktamath & Sohi) comb. nov., Ulavius anasuyae (Viraktamath & Viraktamath) comb. nov. U. decoratus (Viraktamath) comb. nov., U. dworakowskae (Viraktamath) comb. nov., U. jayashriae (Viraktamath & Viraktamath) comb. nov. and U. spectabilis (Viraktamath) comb. nov. These species were placed earlier in the genus Idioscopus except Metidiocerus deodarae which was in the genus Idiocerus. Keys to subtribes, genera and species under each genus are also given. Busonia manipurensis sp. nov. and Busoniomimus manjunathi are actively attended by ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).

Streszczenie:
This paper presents an empirical analysis of the consequences of fiscal illusion for public spending outcomes in a developing country context, specifically Nigeria, over the period 1993- 2022. The presence of fiscal illusion and its main indicators are identified (measured here through deficit illusion, and degree of tax visibility, where the real burden of taxation is underrepresented to the citizen-voter). We find that the Nigerian economy reveals significant fiscal illusion as measured in above terms. Also, fiscal illusion is found to have major and positive impact on the demand for government capital expenditure and government recurrent expenditure and consequently, on real government expenditure in the economy over the chosen time period. This work demonstrated that the controversial question involving the role of fiscal illusion practices on public finances is not recent, but can be thought of as deriving from the discussion invoked by Puviani (1903) and substantially enriched by Buchanan (1960). In spite of the fact that the ‘Fiscal Illusion’ School of Buchanan and Wagner (1977) identifies higher levels of fiscal illusion promoting increasing increments in the size of the public sector, this work developed a model that predicts higher levels of fiscal illusion also decrease national economic growth rates. The government additionally creates the false illusion that public expenditures are lower than they are in reality and for this reason it is easier to maintain the illusive fiscal discipline. On the one hand, the government may cut expenditures in an ostensible way and step towards reducing the budget deficit. On the other hand, without additional procedures the government may introduce new public expenditures outside the budget and, consequently, without any special control of the law-making arm of government.

"The Influence of Hyponatremia and Hypokalemia on the Risk of Fractures in Various Anatomical Regions among Adult Trauma Patients: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis". Streszczenie:
Background: Hyponatremia and hypokalemia are common electrolyte imbalances in trauma patients and have been identified to be risk factors for a fall. In addition, hyponatremia was reported to be related to osteoporosis and fragility fractures, while the association between hypokalemia and osteoporosis has only been reported in rare case reports. This study investigated the impact of hyponatremia and hypokalemia on the incidence of fractures in various body regions of adult trauma patients, using the propensity score-matched patient cohort to reduce the influence of patients’ baseline characteristics. Methods: The study analyzed data from 11,173 hospitalized adult trauma patients treated from 1 January 1998, to 31 December 2022. The study included 1968 patients with hyponatremia and 9205 without, and 1986 with hypokalemia and 9187 without. Different 1:1 propensity score-matched cohorts were generated to create the 1903 pairings of patients with or without hyponatremia, 1977 pairings of patients with or without hypokalemia, and 380 pairing of patients with both hyponatremia and hypokalemia vs. normal control patients. Analysis was conducted on the incidence of fracture in various anatomic regions. Results: Hyponatremic patients had increased odds of thoracic vertebral fracture [odds ratio (95% confidence interval) 1.63 (1.10–2.42), p = 0.014], pelvic fracture [2.29 (1.12–4.67), p = 0.019], and femoral fracture [1.28 (1.13–1.45), p < 0.001] but decreased odds of radial and patella fractures. Hypokalemic patients showed no significant differences in fracture risk except for a decreased likelihood of radial fractures. The patients with both hyponatremia and hypokalemia showed a decreased likelihood of radial fractures and patella fractures. Conclusion: Hyponatremia may have a greater impact on the occurrence of bone fractures than hypokalemia in trauma patients who have suffered a fall. Electrolyte abnormalities should be taken into account while assessing the risk of fractures in trauma patients.

Eight Western Palaearctic Euura species are here assigned to the bergmanni group (bergmanni, brevivalvis, dispar, glutinosae, leptocephalus, respondens, sylvestris, and viridis) and two species to the oligospila group (frenalis and oligospila). Euura pallens (Konow, 1903) (bergmanni group) is removed from the list of West Palaearctic taxa. Euura pyramidalis (Hellén, 1948) is treated as incertae sedis within the bergmanni group. Definitions of the bergmanni and oligospila groups are primarily based on genetic sequence data (mitochondrial COI and nuclear NaK and POL2). We report likely occurrence of heteroplasmy and amplification of NUMTs among some of the treated species, complicating the use of DNA barcoding in species discrimination. Based on morphological and genetic evidence, we establish that the correct name for the invasive willow sawfly in the southern hemisphere (South America, southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand), known there only in the female sex, is Euura respondens (Förster, 1854). The species is probably native to the Palaearctic (or even Holarctic) where males are common: possibly as common as females (examined from Europe and Central Asia). The name Euura oligospila (Förster, 1854) has been incorrectly used for the species in the southern hemisphere. The examination of type material and reliable association of males and females based on genetics revealed that females of E. oligospila are morphologically extremely similar to E. respondens (and to some other E. bergmanni group species), but male penis valves and genetics enable reliable separation of these species. Morphological separation of females of E. oligospila and E. respondens is possible, but challenging. Identification keys for males and females of the bergmanni and oligospila groups are provided. The following 15 new synonymies are proposed: Nematus validicornis Förster, 1854, syn. nov. with Euura bergmanni (Dahlbom, 1835); Pteronidea woollatti Lindqvist, 1971, syn. nov. and Nematus turgaiensis Safjanov, 1977, syn. nov. with Euura brevivalvis (Thomson, 1871); Pteronidea pseudodispar Lindqvist, 1969, syn. nov. with Euura dispar (Zaddach, 1876); Nematus (Pteronidea) fastosus var. ponojense Hellén, 1948, syn. nov. and N. (P.) fastosus var. punctiscuta Hellén, 1948, syn. nov. with Euura frenalis (Thomson, 1888); Nematus declaratus Muche, 1974, syn. nov. and N. desantisi D.R. Smith, 1983, syn. nov. with Euura respondens (Förster, 1854); Pteronidea straminea Lindqvist, 1958, syn. nov., P. angustiserra Lindqvist, 1969, syn. nov., and P. disparoides Lindqvist, 1969, syn. nov. with Euura sylvestris (Cameron, 1884); Pteronidea breviseta Lindqvist, 1946, syn. nov., P. breviseta Lindqvist, 1949, syn. nov., P. abscondita Lindqvist, 1949, syn. nov., and P. lauroi Lindqvist, 1960, syn. nov. with Euura viridis (Stephens, 1835).

Abstract Over the years, the perception of health, beauty and status has been associated with skin colour. Influential figures over the ages, from Queen Elizabeth I to Kim Kardashian, have dictated social standards of beauty including the ‘ideal’ skin colour. In parallel, advancements in medicine and science have led to the use of light therapy as a treatment for many medical conditions. The history of tanning and the basis for society’s obsession are important to understand. During the Elizabethan era, Queen Elizabeth I used heavy layers of ‘Venetian ceruse’, a deadly concoction of white lead and vinegar, to achieve the porcelain skin that was desirable at the time. Members of high society followed suit, as tanned skin was associated with outdoor manual labour. During the Industrial Revolution, social perception turned on its head as the rural poor moved to work in mills and factories in the 18th century. Working in sunlight-depleted environments resulted in pallor being associated with low social status. In the 1920s, the French designer and fashion icon Coco Chanel famously returned from the French Riviera with a suntan and announced in Vogue magazine that, ‘the 1929 girl must be tanned…a golden tan is the index of chic’, leading to her accreditation for beginning the fashionable trend of a suntan in modern history and the present day. From ‘Malibu Barbie’ dolls in the 1970s to Kim Kardashian showing off her office sunbed in 2024, the Western beauty ideal of tanned skin is continually perpetuated. Parallel to the beauty world, the novel idea of phototherapy and its successful treatment of lupus vulgaris resulted in Niels Finsen receiving the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1903. Further development of indoor tanning devices in the 1920s led to their promotion as treatment for diverse conditions from rickets to pneumonia. In the 1970s, the first commercial sunbed was invented by European scientist Friedrich Wolff, culminating in 1977 with the world’s first tanning salon in Berlin. By the 1980s the association of sunbed use and skin cancer was observed. As a result, nonultraviolet tanning methods were popularized, from teabags in the 1950s to the revolutionary discovery of dihydroxyacetone in the 1960s, resulting in ‘fake tan’ as we know it today and allowing for safer methods of attaining the desired glow. Ultimately, tanned skin rose from a hallmark of low socioeconomic status in history, to now reflect the opposite: wealth, health and beauty.

In the list there are given the complete synonymy, including new synonymy of generic and subgeneric names [Crepuraea Kirejtshuk, 1990 and Nyujwa Perkovsky, 1990 syn. nov.; Haptoncus Murray, 1864 and Haptoncurina Jelínek, 1977, syn. nov.; Ecnomaeus Erichson, 1843 and Somaphorus Murray, 1864, syn. nov.; Ecnomorphus Motschulsky, 1858; Tribrachys LeConte, 1861 syn. nov.; Stauroglossicus Murray, 1864, syn. nov. and Microxanthus Murray, 1864, syn. nov.; Pria Stephens, 1829 and Allopria Kirejtshuk, 1980, syn. nov.; Megauchenia Macleay, 1825 and Orvoenia Dajoz, 1980, syn. nov.; Tetrisus Murray, 1864 and Pseudoischaena Grouvelle, 1897, syn. nov.; Neopocadius Grouvelle, 1906 and Pseudostelidota Grouvelle, 1906, syn. nov.; Cychramus Kugelann, 1794 and Aethinopsis Grouvelle, 1908, syn. nov.; Mystrops Erichson, 1843, and Cryptoraea Retter, 1873, syn. nov.; Cyllodes Erichson, 1843 and Mecyllodes Sharp, 1891, syn. nov.; Grammorus Murray, 1868 and Colopteroides Watrous, 1982, syn. nov.; Cryptarcha Shuckard, 1839 and Priatelus Broun, 1881, syn. nov.]. For some taxa the rank is changed, namely, Lordyra Gemminger & Harold, 1868, stat. nov. is regarded as a subgenus of Lasiodactylus Perty, 1830-1834; Brounthina Kirejtshuk, 1997, stat. nov. as a subgenus Neopocadius Grouvelle, 1906 and Teichostethus Sharp, 1891, stat. nov. as a subgenus of Hebascus Erichson, 1843, while the taxa Coxollodes Kirejtshuk, 1987 (stat. nov.) and Onicotis Murray, 1864 (stat. nov.) are regarded as separate genera. The new taxa and new taxonomical proposals are supplied with corresponding data in the notes below the list. Reversal of Precedence is used herein to qualify the following family-group names as nomina protecta: Murmidiinae Jacquelin du Val, 1858 (Cerylonidae) and Chalepini Weise, 1910 (Chrysomelidae). The following 17 Coleoptera family-group names (some of which are used as valid) are homonyms of other family-group names in zoology, these cases must be referred to the Commission for a ruling to remove the homonymy: Catiniidae Ponomarenko, 1968 (Catiniidae); Homopterinae Wasmann, 1920, Glyptini Horn, 1881 (Carabidae); Tychini Raffray, 1904, Ocypodina Hatch, 1957 (Staphylinidae); Gonatinae Kuwert, 1891 (Passalidae); Aplonychidae Burmeister, 1855 (Scarabaeidae); Microchaetini Paulus, 1973 (Byrrhidae); Epiphanini Muona, 1993 (Eucnemidae); Limoniina Jakobson, 1913 (Elateridae); Ichthyurini Champion, 1915 (Cantharidae); Decamerinae Crowson, 1964 (Trogossitidae); Trichodidae Streubel, 1839 (Cleridae); Monocorynini Miyatake, 1988 (Coccinellidae); Gastrophysina Kippenberg, 2010, Chorinini Weise, 1923 (Chrysomelidae); Meconemini Pierce, 1930 (Anthribidae). The following new substitute names are proposed: Phoroschizus (to replace Schizophorus Ponomarenko, 1968) and Phoroschizidae (to replace Schizophoridae Ponomarenko, 1968); Mesostyloides (to replace Mesostylus Faust, 1894) and Mesostyloidini (to replace Mesostylini Reitter, 1913). The following new genus-group name synonyms are proposed [valid names in square brackets]: Plocastes Gistel, 1856 [Aesalus Fabricius, 1801] (Lucanidae); Evambates Gistel, 1856 [Trichius Fabricius, 1775] (Scarabaeidae); Homoeoplastus Gistel, 1856 [Byturus Latreille, 1797] (Byturidae). Two type genera previously treated as preoccupied and invalid, Heteroscelis Latreille, 1828 and Dysantes Pascoe, 1869 (Tenebrionidae), are determined to be senior homonyms based on bibliographical research. While Dysantes is treated as valid here, Reversal of Precedence (ICZN 1999: Art. 23.9) is used to conserve usage of Anomalipus Guérin-Méneville, 1831 over Heteroscelis.

Streszczenie:
With a geological history of long isolation, fragmentation, partial submersion, and subsequent rising, characterized by a remarkable diversity in topology, geology, and habitats, and the fifth-largest island of the Mediterranean, Crete has provided an ideal setting for speciation and developing a unique and diverse Staphylinidae fauna. Although beginning already in the middle of the 19th century, the exploration of this fauna gained momentum only recently. Based on a critical revision of literature data, on material collected during several recent field trips, and on additional previously unpublished records, a checklist of the Staphylinidae of Crete is compiled, including as many as 397 named species, with 115 of them reported from the island for the first time and with 48 new species described in the second part of the monograph. Additional unidentified and unnamed species, as well as species doubtfully or erroneously recorded from Crete are listed separately. The systematic, zoogeographic, and ecological composition of the Staphylinidae fauna is characterized with a special focus on the endemics. The latter are represented by 111 named and at least ten unnamed species, account for nearly one-third of the fauna, and mainly belong to the subfamilies Aleocharinae, Scydmaeninae, Pselaphinae, Paederinae, Leptotyphlinae, Staphylininae, and Omaliinae. More than half of them are even locally endemic. The genera with the greatest number of endemic species are Cephennium Müller & Kunze, 1822 of the Scydmaeninae (twelve named species) and Geostiba Thomson, 1858 of the Aleocharinae (nine named species). More than two-thirds of the endemic species are epigeic inhabitants of forests, bush and shrub habitats, grassland, and wetlands, approximately one-fourth is confined to deeper soil strata or endogean, and 8 % are myrmephilous. Slightly more than half (59 species; 53 %) of the endemics are most likely the result of in-situ radiation (18 lineages), the remainder of vicariance with mainland species. A comparison with other Mediterranean islands revealed that (a) total diversity of the Cretan fauna is significantly greater than that of other East Mediterranean islands except Corfu, but much lower than that of Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily, (b) regarding the number of endemic species Crete ranks third behind Corsica and Sardinia, and (c) the rate of endemism is greater in Crete than in any other Mediterranean island. Explanations for the observed differences in the diversity and composition of the faunas of the islands are discussed. Stichoglossa graeca Bernhauer, 1905, a species of which previously only the lectotype was known, is redescribed and illustrated. Six synonymies are proposed and one name is revalidated: Phloeocharis longipennis Fauvel, 1875 = P. hummleri Bernhauer, 1915, syn. nov.; Phytosus balticus Kraatz, 1859 = P. holtzi Bernhauer, 1935, syn. nov.; Atheta nigra (Kraatz, 1856) = A. biroi Scheerpeltz, 1964, syn. nov.; Domene stilicina (Erichson, 1840) = D. lohseiana Bordoni, 1977, syn. nov.; Oedichirus rubronotatus Pic, 1903, revalidated = O. reitteri Bernhauer, 1908, syn. nov.; Pseudolathra quadricollis (Fauvel, 1875) = P. cretensis Bordoni, 1986, syn. nov. A lectotype is designated for Stichoglossa graeca Bernhauer, 1905. Two species are reported from Greece for the first time.
