The Iberian Peninsula is a global hotspot for bee diversity due to its large number of different habitats, particularly Mediterranean scrubland, mountains, and hot and cold steppe. In line with its status as a hotspot of bee diversity, the peninsula hosts a very large Andrena fauna, which despite progress in recent years remains incompletely studied, particularly with reference to genetic investigation. Here the Iberian Andrena fauna is comprehensively revised, resulting in a total of 228 recorded species. Numerous taxonomic changes are necessary following inspection of museum specimens, type material, and genetic investigation. The following subgenera are described: Pruinosandrenasubgen. nov., containing six taxa previously placed in the subgenus Campylogaster Dours, 1873, and Blandandrenasubgen. nov., Bryandrenasubgen. nov., Limbandrenasubgen. nov., and Ovandrenasubgen. nov., containing one, one, one, and four taxa previously placed in the subgenus Poliandrena Warncke, 1968. Andrena (Limbandrena) toelgiana Friese, 1921 syn. nov. is synonymised with A. (Limbandrena) limbata Eversmann, 1852. The current lectotype of A. (Micrandrena) obsoleta Pérez, 1895 was incorrectly designated by Warncke; the taxon differs from A. obsoleta sensu Warncke, belonging instead to a taxon within the A. mariana Warncke, 1968 complex. A new lectotype is designated for A. obsoletasp. resurr. from Algeria, and A. mariana solda Warncke, 1974 syn. nov. is synonymised with it; A. (Micrandrena) alma Warncke, 1975 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) mica Warncke, 1974 stat. nov., and A. (Micrandrena) tenostra Warncke, 1975 stat. nov. are raised to species status. Andrena (Truncandrena) abunda Warncke, 1974 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) lecana Warncke, 1975 stat. nov., A. (Pruinosandrena) parata Warncke, 1967 stat. nov., A. (Micrandrena) pauxilla Stöckhert, 1935 sp. resurr., A. (Notandrena) griseobalteata Dours, 1872, A. (Taeniandrena) poupillieri Dours, 1872, A. (Pruinosandrena) succinea Dours, 1872, and A. (incertae sedis) numida Lepeletier, 1841. Type photographs and diagnostic characters are presented in each case, as well as new dietary information for understudied species. Finally, an identification key is presented in order to facilitate future research on this hyper-diverse genus in one of their global diversity hotspots, and current and future research perspectives for Iberian Andrena are discussed.

The terrestrial predatory leech of the genus Orobdella Oka, 1895 is recorded for the first time from Moneron Island, which is located southwest of Sakhalin, Russia. Morphological characteristics of the Moneron Orobdella clarify its taxonomic identification as O. kawakatsuorum Richardson, 1975, which is indigenous to Hokkaido Island in the Japanese Archipelago. The occurrence data extends the northernmost range of the genus Orobdella and shows that the leech fauna is shared between Moneron Island and Hokkaido.

O presente trabalho traçou como proposta um ensino dialógico de literatura na educaçãobásica, com fundamentação nos pressupostos teórico-metodológicos de Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), Valentin N. Volóchinov (1895-1936) e Pável N. Medviédev (1891-1938), integrantes doCírculo de Bakhtin. Esta proposta viabiliza a que professores da educação básica repensem suaspráticas de ensino, (re)acentuando metodologias cujo prisma seja a interação. Nosso objetivo, portanto,é propor um ensino dialógico de literatura para a formação de sujeitos críticos, a partir doinstante em que as condições sócio-históricas e interdiscursivas são levadas em conta, assim comoas vozes que atravessam cada gênero literário ou discursivo estudado. Quanto ao ato analítico,delimitou-se como corpus o poema “José”, de Carlos Drummond de Andrade, que foi publicadooriginalmente em 1942, e cuja edição que utilizamos é a de 2009. Espera-se que, enquanto sujeitosresponsivos e ativos, pesquisadores e docentes mobilizem estratégias de saber relacionadas ao sujeito,à linguagem, à história e à ideologia, termos caros à compreensão de textos literários.Palavras-chave: Ensino. Tem como objetivo construir um percurso que relacione tais obras com outras produções artísticas e literárias, tanto de Gerchman quanto de outros artistas. Como abordagem metodológica, utiliza a análise dialógica do discurso, que propõe o diálogo entre diferentes enunciados concretos e a produção de sentidos gerada pela interação entre sujeitos situados social e historicamente.

Abstract Two new species of the genus Glischrochilus Reitter, 1873, subgenus Librodor Reitter, 1884: Glischrochilus (Librodor) pilula sp. nov. (Laos) and Glischrochilus (Librodor) ruzickai sp. nov. (China: Yunnan, Sichuan; Myanmar) are described, figured and compared with other species of the genus. Glischrochilus egregius (Grouvelle, 1895) is formally synonymised with G. egregius cyclops Jelínek, 1975, syn. nov. and G. egregius monticola Jelínek, 1975, syn. nov. – these two forms were established based on different body colouration; however, the study of extensive material revealed that it is variable independently of its geographic origin. The identity of Ips janthinus Reitter, 1877 from Tasmania (previously included in Glischrochilus) is discussed and the species is formally synonymised with Thallis ianthina Erichson, 1842 (Erotylidae). New country records from China, India, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, or new Chinese provincial records are provided for 14 species. A world checklist of the genus Glischrochilus is appended.

Несмотря на существование множества работ, которые посвящены философской, культурологической, эстетической проблематике его произведений, практически совершенно игнорируется вопрос о религиозной составляющей наследия М. М. Бахтина. Английская исследовательница Рут Коутс (Ruth Coates) ставит перед собой задачу восполнить эту лакуну. В своей монографии «Christianity in Bakhtin» («Христианство в творчестве Бахтина») она предлагает нашему вниманию результаты своего анализа как религиозных взглядов самого М. М. Бахтина, так и религиозных мотивов его творчества. Монография была издана в издательстве «Cambridge University Press» в 1998 году. The personality and work of the outstanding Russian thinker M.M. Bakhtin (1895-1975) have recently become an increasingly important subject of scholarly attention. Despite the existence of many works devoted to philosophical, culturological, aesthetic problems of his works, the question of the religious component of Mikhail Bakhtin's heritage is almost completely ignored. The British researcher Ruth Coates sets herself the task of filling this gap. In her monograph Christianity in Bakhtin, she presents the results of her analysis of both Bakhtin's own religious views and those of Bakhtin. Bakhtin, as well as the religious motifs in his works. This monograph was published by Cambridge University Press in 1998. The present publication opens a series of articles, the purpose of which is to acquaint the Russian-speaking reader with the contents of the most important sections of this study.

The strikes were remarkable because, in an American industry known for violent labor relations and intensive union organizing since the appearance of the Molly Maguires in Pennsylvania before 1880, this was the first major strike in southern West Virginia. We might attempt to understand the role of law and public authority in these strikes in terms of legal repression by means of the labor injunction, labor conspiracy laws, and strikebreaking by the police and military. But none of these occurred in Fayette in 1895, though the later history of labor conflict in West Virginia is replete with all of them. In another way, however, the legal events accompanying these strikes are far more remarkable and challenge us to examine more subtle connections between class conflict and law.

Summary In the 1930s lexical semantics came under the influence of Saussurean structuralism and Gestalt psychology. The study of whole lexical fields and the structure of these fields replaced a historical semantics focusing on single words and the classification of the transitions between the meanings of these words over time according to different sets of criteria. At the same time contextualism, the study of meaning in its pragmatic context of language use, began to attract the attention of linguists, philosophers, and psychologists of language. Fully aware of the emergence of structuralism and contextualism, Volo‰inov and Baxtin began to develop their theories of meaning, society and literature, later called dialogism. All three movements dealt with the relativity of meaning, as relativity in a semantic field, as relativity in social context, and as relativity in social interaction and dialogue. This article demonstrates how, in a sometimes hidden dialogue with their Western contemporaries, Valentin Nikolaeviã Volo‰inov (1895–1936) and Mixail Mixajloviã Baxtin (1895–1975) developed new ‘relativistic’ theories of meaning, novel theories of pragmatics (speech acts), and modern theories of verbal interaction.

We have no way of knowing when the first migrant from present-day Lebanon arrived in West Africa. Some amongst the Lebanese of Dakar still clung in the 1960s to tales ofa man, known only by his first name — 'Isa — who had landed in Senegal a century earlier (Cruise O'Brien 1975: 98). Others told ofa group of young men — Maronite Christians from the craggy escarpments of Mount Lebanon — who had found their way to West Africa some time between 1876 and 1880 (Winder 1962:30()). The Lebanese journalist 'Abdallah Hushaimah, travelling through the region in the 1930s, met in Nigeria one Elias al-Khuri, who claimed to have arrived in the colony in 1890 (Hushaimah 1931:332). The Dutch scholar Laurens van der Laan, combing in the late 1960s through old newspapers in the reading rooms of Fourah Bay College in Freetown, found the first mention of the Lebanese in the Creole press of Sierra Leone in 1895 (van der Laan 1975: l).

Metamorphosis is a remarkable process in echinoderms, transforming a bilaterally symmetrical planktonic larva into a radially symmetrical benthic adult. This shift in habitat involves functional and anatomical changes in virtually every organ system (Bury, 1895; MacBride, 1914; Okazaki, 1975). Although metamorphosis is a crucial process in echinoderm development, we know relatively little about it. Furthermore, most of what we do know concerns sea urchins, and even less information is available about metamorphosis in other echinoderms. We have examined the expression of regulatory and structural genes during metamorphosis in several different echinoderm species (Lowe & Wray, 1997 and unpublished results). These data, together with those from several recent studies concerning additional genes (reviewed in Wray & Lowe, 2000), are beginning to shed new light on this complex and important process in echinoderm development.The overt transformation from swimming larva to settled juvenile is quite rapid in echinoderms (Cameron & Hinegardner, 1978), requiring less than half an hour in many species. The complete process of metamorphosis takes much longer, however (Okazaki, 1975; Gosselin & Jangoux, 1998). Extensive preparations begin several days to weeks before settlement (MacBride, 1914; Okazaki, 1975), depending upon the species and upon environmental conditions (Strathmann et al., 1992). During this preparatory phase, initially small populations of ectodermal and mesodermal cells fated to become the adult proliferate, differentiate and undergo complex morphogenetic movements to form the imaginal rudiment (MacBride, 1914; Okazaki, 1975). The rudiment is more complex than the larva in several important ways: it contains a greater number of cell types, it is the first place where true tissues form, and it contains the first well-organised nervous system (Okazaki, 1975; Chia & Burke, 1978).

Ao capacitar o tradutor a incorporar os traços culturais da cultura-fonte e da cultura-alvo, o dialogismo provê uma saída ao dilema entre lealdade e liberdade que incomoda os estudos da tradução há anos. Uma teoria bakhtiniana da tradução entrelaça os “fios dialógicos vivos” entre cultura-fonte e cultura-alvo, a fim de criar um ambiente de abertura. Este artigo explora os vários significados do termo “diálogo” e busca mostrar a significação e as implicações da compreensão da tradução como uma interanimação no sentido bakhtiniano.

Me propongo en este ensayo valerme precisamente de dichos recursos para analizar dos poemas de El Mickey Mouse de la noche, obra del poeta japonés Shuntarô Tanikawa (1931-), con el objetivo de retribuir a la poesía la capacidad dialógica que se le ha negado durante largo tiempo al circunscribirla al universo particular y cerrado del hablante lírico.

A variety of fossil mammals has been recovered from the freshwater, fluviatile sediments of the Chinchilla Sand (sensu Woods 1960) and is collectively known as the Chinchilla Local Fauna (Archer and Bartholomai 1978). Included in this exclusively Pliocene fauna are marsupial carnivores (Bartholomai 1962, 1976; Wroe and Mackness 1998; 2000a,b); bandicoots (Mackness et al. 2000); phascolarctomorphs (De Vis 1889, Archer 1977); diprotontontoids (De Vis 1887, 1891, 1895; Longman 1921); marsupial lions (Bartholomai 1962); macropodids (Bartholomai 1963, 1973, 1975); bats (Hand et al. 1999) and rodents (Godthelp 1990). In addition, there are several reports of thylacinids from the fauna (De Vis 1893, 1894; Ride 1964; Dawson 1982).

The segregate of Myriocoleopsis was firstly proposed by Schiffner (1944: 234) based on some remarkable characters, such as dimorphic stems, long male spikes, erect leafy axes arising from a creeping stolon and reduced lobules (Gradstein & Vital 1975; Reiner-Drehwald & Gradstein 1995). Hitherto a total of three species are recognized in this genus: Myriocoleopsis fluviatilis (Stephani 1895: 248) Reiner & Gradstein (1997: 639) known from Argentina, Brazil and Ecuador (Reiner-Drehwald & Gradstein 1997; Gradstein & da Costa 2003), M. gymnocolea Spruce (1884: 296) Reiner & Gradstein (1997: 640) known only from Brazil (Reiner-Drehwald & Gradstein 1997) and M. vuquangensis (Pócs & Ninh 2005: 156) Pócs (2010: 124) known only from Vietnam (Pócs 2010). Myriocoleopsis shares substantial resemblance with Cololejeunea (Spruce 1884: 291) Stephani (1891: 208) (particular subgen. Protocolea Schuster (1963: 171)) in the stem structure, absence of underleaves, lobular form, leaf margin, oil bodies and sporophytes (Gradstein & Vital 1975; Schuster 1980; Reiner-Drehwald & Gradstein 1995). Although the rigid stem and large size of Myriocoleopsis was also found in some rheophytic taxa of Cololejeunea such as subgen. Chlorolejeunea Benedix (1953: 81), it had been interpreted as adaption to similar habitats (Reiner-Drehwald & Gradstein 1995).

Há diálogo entre telejornalismo e audiência? Este artigo debruça-se sobre essa questão, buscando investigar se a interatividade, cada vez maior entre público e telejornais, significa, realmente, um diálogo entre as duas instâncias. O arcabouço teórico do trabalho é composto por preceitos sobre a argumentação dialógica, categoria cunhada pelo filósofo e pensador russo Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), e sobre televisão e telejornalismo. A pesquisa empírica foi realizada com dois grupos focais, formados, ao todo, por onze profissionais, atuantes em seis diferentes emissoras televisivas. Foi possível perceber que, mesmo com a interatividade cada vez maior, inclusive com a participação do público na produção das narrativas televisivas, o diálogo efetivo entre telejornais e audiência ainda não foi conquistado, havendo, pois, um devir dialógico no telejornalismo.

A relação entre a literatura e a ciência geográfica pode fornecer um valioso registro intelectual da complexidade da cultura paulista na década de 1930. Este estudo demonstra como o discurso geográfico contido no polêmico romance A Voz do Oeste (1934), de Plínio Salgado, cria um mecanismo simbólico legitimador de uma identidade brasileira a partir do referencial paulista de sociedade desenvolvida. Tomando emprestado a discussão bakhtiniana (BAKHTIN 2011;2014) sobre os enunciados socialmente construídos, bem como o papel do escritor na sociedade brasileira durante a primeira metade do século XX (CANDIDO, 2000), o presente artigo pretende demonstrar como um discurso reacionário e autoritário fez parte do debate cultural brasileiro e, numa escala mais detalhada, influenciou a discussão sobre as ideologias geográficas na década de 1930 (MORAES, 1990; 1991 ;2007). Ademais, a figura intelectual de Plínio Salgado ainda causa estranheza e curiosidade no meio acadêmico, uma vez que para o autor a suposta identidade brasileira deveria necessariamente passar pelo prisma da geografia de São Paulo. Isso por si cria uma hierarquização territorial cujo ordenamento simbólico segue um princípio moralizante; este princípio, por sua vez, é sustentado por um autoritarismo anacrônico, o qual deve ser regido pela característica fisiográfica do relevo e pela miscigenação das “raças”.

This article contains a conceptual description of the problematics of "foreign word" in the general literary methodology of analysis by Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin (1895–1975), and a description of its individual theoretical aspects. The subject of the study is Bakhtin's concept of "foreign word". The author examines in detail such aspects of the topic as "alien speech", "alien consciousness" in the context of the ideas of M.M. Bakhtin, as well as his student and colleague in the "Nevelsk-Vitebsk seminar" - Valentin Nikolaevich Voloshinov (1895-1936). Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the centon genre, which in the history of verbal culture has become a source of creative discoveries and innovative techniques for various authors. The analyzed aspects of Bakhtin's theory allow us to draw an important conclusion about the distinctive features of the organization of a literary text in modernist and postmodernist literature. The organization of the artistic text in modern postmodern literature occurs in accordance with the principles of centonicity and quotation, i.e. cultural mediation of most artistic artifacts. The main difference between postmodern works and most reminiscent works of modernism is that allusions and reminiscences cease to perform the function of references to universally valid concepts, but work in the centonal mode (dramatically rethinking the original context - up to its leveling, "dissolution", "spraying" ) organization of a literary text.

This essay examines the impact of Baconian utilitarianism on Lancelot Thomas Hogben (1895–1975), a biologist whose view of science was heavily intertwined with his support of socialist planning. Like Bacon and Marx, Hogben considered science to be a collective tool of utmost importance for empowering people and improving life conditions through a conscious and methodical intervention on our surroundings. Convinced by the fundamentally applied nature of science, Hogben successfully used the principles of the emerging Marxist historiography of science in his popular science books to teach abstract ideas through their origins in practical life. Furthermore, he extended the view of science as planning from biology and economics to linguistics by designing the international language Interglossa that would also serve to enhance scientific literacy in the lay public.

Summary This article discusses the origins and formation of the notion of ‘metalinguistics’ in Mixail Mixajlovič Baxtin’s (1895–1975) writings. It is argued that the discussion of metalinguistics and the division of labour within the study of language in the United States in the 1940s and 1950s may have exerted a more profound influence on the formation of Baxtin’s linguistic views than was previously thought. The article investigates the nature and extent of this interaction and shows that there are interesting parallels between Baxtin’s conception of metalinguistics and the metalinguistics writings of George L. Trager (1906–1992). This suggests that, apart from any purely terminological influence, the way in which Baxtin defined the scope of his metalinguistics as a specific discipline separate from linguistics may have been inspired by the writings of the American structuralists.

AbstractTaking inspiration from linguistic anthropological approaches to the work of the Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), this article uses a Bakhtinian perspective on voice as contested presence to analyze the post-Mao revival of mountain deity possession practices among Tibetans in China's northwestern province of Qinghai. I respond to recent work that suggests that state-led development processes have intensified grassroots contests over the moral sources of authority and legitimacy in China, by contrasting the ambivalent voices of an urbanizing village's Tibetan Party secretary with those of the village's deity medium, during a mid-2000s village conflict. The conflict underscored a crisis of authority or moral “presence” among Tibetans under intensifying central state-led development pressures that for many carried forward the disenfranchisement of Tibetans that started in the 1950s.

The relationship between a cinematic adaptation and its literary source has sparked scholarly debates in the field of adaptation studies. Developed by the Russian literary critic, Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), dialogism can shed new light on the adaptation-source tie as it highlights the mutual interaction between the two sides. The present study argues that Al Pacino and Richard Loncraine’s versions of William Shakespeare’s Richard III (1593) stress such a dialogic aspect of the adaptation process. Within this dialogic framework, Pacino’s Looking for Richard (1996) establishes a heteroglossial relation with the play as it seeks to eliminate the gap between Shakespeare and the movie’s modern viewers. Loncraine’s Richard III (1995), however, is marked by a significant chronotopic strategy which situates Richard in new social and political contexts through a change in the play’s temporal and spatial elements.

This study investigates the impacts of including extension credits in undergraduate courses on the training of journalists. It describes the work carried out by PUC-Rio Journalism and Citizenship students at the Fala Roça newspaper, in Rocinha, a favela in southern Rio de Janeiro. The theoretical research is supported by the concepts of the “community that comes” (Agamben, 1993) and the “external agent”, by the Canadian philosopher Kenneth Schmitz, as Raquel Paiva described in her work Espírito Comum: comunidade, mídia e globalismo (2003), which addresses relationships established by the partnership and the development of “responsibility” proposed by Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) in the act of producing citizen journalism. This research shows that university extension enables the journalism discipline to train journalists who have “responsibility” and can effectively be social agents by transforming the society in which they live.

A proposta do artigo é apresentar o teatro de Qorpo Santo (1829-1883), na perspectiva teórica de Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), inserir esse dramaturgo ocasional no contexto político e cultural do Segundo Império brasileiro e comentar-lhe algumas peças, chegando à conclusão de que, por meio da polifonia presente nos seus textos teatrais, o autor faz uma crítica à sociedade brasileira contemporânea dele, ao dar a palavra à personagens contestadores, principalmente no que se refere aos seus aspectos políticos e culturais. O resultado é o desnudamento de um escritor que apesar de não ser considerado canônico e de ainda não possuir reconhecimento unânime na historiografia literária brasileira, constituiu-se, no conteúdo de suas peças teatrais, na primeira voz dissonante do moralismo religioso e dos atrasos sociais e políticos da sociedade brasileira do século XIX. Sua obra pode ser considerada singular e rica, além de ter sido antecipadora, na sua forma estética, do teatro do absurdo e do próprio Surrealismo da França do século XX.

This paper explores the link between Asian-inspired material culture and musical theatre through the collections of Anglo-Australian performer Herbert Browne (1895-1975). Brown played lead roles in 1920s Australian musical theatre productions of The Mikado and Chu Chin Chow and re-lived his connection with oriental theatre by collecting and responding to objects performatively in the Chinoiserie room of his Melbourne home. Oriental musical theatre blended exotic cultures and locales in visually spectacular productions which bore little resemblance to reality. The taste for escapist fiction in the theatre took place against a backdrop of museum collecting which aimed to reproduce authentic Asian and Other cultures. In this paper, I draw on French philosopher Merleau-Ponty’s observations on the relationship between thought and the body’s interaction with space to interpret the influence of Browne’s theatricality on collecting choices. From this perspective, objects materialize particular understandings of the world which originate in the body and the body’s performative engagement with space.

Este artigo procura apontar possíveis articulações entre a psicologia cultural e a poesia a partir do enunciado “Eu é um outro” do poeta francês Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), extraído de suas “Cartas do Vidente” e tomado como uma perspectiva poético-visionária para a perspectiva do construtivismo semiótico-cultural em psicologia. O enunciado é endereçado às noções de dialogismo e polifonia em Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975), visando expressar a pluralidade das experiências de alteridade no campo das relações eu-outro-mundo. Bakhtin é um dos principais autores para esta vertente meta-teórica, metodológica e ética em psicologia, que focaliza processos relacionais envolvidos na relação eu-outro, tomando cada coparticipante da relação como singularidade ativa, construtora de sentidos e significados da experiência. Rimbaud foi um poeta-visionário, e sua perspectiva poética da alteridade constitui um campo fértil para um diálogo com a psicologia cultural. Suas Cartas do Vidente, escritas em 1871, servirão de suporte para uma reflexão sobre as noções de alteridade e dialogicidade no Self.

O estudo comparativo de alguns dos principais autores ligados à Sociologia da Cultura e à História Social da Arte aponta para a incrementação do debate no interior desses campos de pesquisa ao longo do século XX. Tal complexidade, por sua vez, expressou-se pela ampliação do universo documental, bem como pela introdução de novos temas, problemas e abordagens metodológicas em ambas as áreas do conhecimento. Este artigo apresenta e relaciona alguns pontos de vista em torno de duas importantes questões, tanto para historiadores da arte quanto para sociólogos da cultura: a discussão relativa à ideia de cultura e as diferentes compreensões acerca das relações entre formas estéticas e processos sociais. Para realizar essa discussão, analisa-se o uso das fontes, bem como os métodos empregados por quatro estudiosos identificados com tradições intelectuais mais ou menos diversas: Heinrich Wölfflin (1864-1945), Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968), Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) e Timothy James Clark (1943).

Due to the input of humic substances from freshwater run-off into the marine habitat, the influences of such substances on marine organisms should not be neglected. We here investigate the effect of a humic acid (HA) extract from the North Sea, characterized by spectroscopic techniques and carboxylic and phenolic group content, on the growth of different algae. Two benthic pennate diatoms isolated from the Baltic Sea, Navicula ramosissima (C. Agardh) Cleve, 1895 and Entomoneis paludosa (W. Smith) Reimer, 1975, as well as two tychopelagic centric diatoms isolated from the North Sea, Melosira nummuloides C. Agardh, 1824 and Paralia sulcata (Ehrenberg) Cleve, 1873, were employed. The concentrations of pigments (fucoxanthin, diadinoxanthin, chlorophyll-a and β-carotene) and nutrients were also measured. Adding low concentrations of naturally humic substances (5.5 mg of C l−1) to the algae cultures resulted in enhanced growth rates compared to the control experiments, possibly due to the increase in the bioavailability of trace metals or other nutrients.

This paper analyzes Ahmed Saadawi’s Frankenstein in Baghdad (2018) with a special emphasis on the grotesque bodily images of the monster, the novel’s exploration of justice, and the question of violence. I draw on the theoretical framework of the Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), the ethics philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995), and the German-American philosopher and political thinker Hannah Arendt (1906–1975). Saadawi’s unnamed monster, “The Whatsitsname,” comes into being via an accidental if honorably intentioned act, when the main character, Hadi, compiles remnant corpses that he finds in the streets of Bagdad into one body with the aim of conducting “a proper burial” in order to dignify the dead. Interestingly, while the monster is the enemy in the eyes of the Iraqi government, he is a savior for the ordinary people— their only hope of putting an end to the violence and achieving justice. In this paper, I argue that Saadawi draws on the metaphor of Frankenstein’s monster not only to capture the dystopian mood in post-2003 Baghdad, but also to question the tragic realities, and the consequence of war, as well as the overall ramification of colonialism. In addition, Saadawi’s embodiment of the metaphor of Frankenstein’s monster actualizes a new literary role for Frankenstein in literature—the representation of the Other: In this instance, the entire Iraqi community is literary represented in Frankenstein’s body. Of equal importance, is the fragmented nature of his body, which is literally compiled of different body parts from different people, perhaps symbolizing the urgent need for unity in Iraq.

A consolidação do pensamento do teórico russo Mikhail Bakhtin (1895-1975) como influenciador de diversas áreas das ciências humanas, em especial os estudos da linguagem, foi construída historicamente, a partir de valores e confrontos em determinadas conjunturas histórico-sociais. Este artigo objetiva discutir sobre o processo de difusão do pensamento bakhtiniano no Ocidente, sobretudo nos diferentes contextos de recepção dessa abordagem no Brasil, abordando, em especial, a questão das traduções da obra bakhtiniana no país. O trabalho discute, também, a problemática dos “textos disputados” e o debate sobre a configuração do chamado Círculo de Bakhtin, com ênfase para uma reflexão sobre o lugar ocupado pelos estudiosos russos V. N. Volóchinov e P. N. Medviédev na constituição desse arcabouço teórico-metodológico. Por fim, pode-se destacar que a chamada Análise Dialógica do Discurso não é uma abordagem fechada e não se configura como um campo delimitado de análise do discurso, mas é fruto do trabalho de estudiosos brasileiros que vêm desenvolvendo pesquisas cujo fico condutor é a concepção sócio-histórico-ideológica de linguagem empreendida pelo Círculo de Bakhtin.

This article has employed the theory of Bakhtin’s (1895–1975) dialogism, and Wolfgang Iser’s (1926–2007) reader-response theory to examine the socio-political, and historical implications of Gerald Vizenor’s The Heirs of Columbus. The Heirs of Columbus (Heirs) was written to dismantle the historical oppression of Native Americans (NA) throughout the post Columbian era. Dialogism is an umbrella term that creates difference between historical and Native American discourse, providing new passages to comprehend the marginalized silenced other; in other words, it helps create a voice for the vanishing Indian. We have systematically identified the use of dialogic techniques like subversion, carnival, polyphony and heteroglossia in Heirs while, at the same time, analyzing his text through the framework of Iser’s reader-response theory. We have come to the conclusion that Iser’s theory is not enough to analyze Vizenor’s revolutionary text since Vizenor provokes his readers to draw their own conclusions rather than conforming to set of fixed ideals of author.
