Pełny tekst źródłaIn this thesis, we consider the three following problems: clustering in Bipartite Stochastic Block Model, estimation of topic-document matrix in topic model, and benign overfitting in nonparametric regression. First, we consider the graph clustering problem in the Bipartite Stochastic Block Model (BSBM). The BSBM is a non-symmetric generalization of the Stochastic Block Model, with two sets of vertices. We provide an algorithm called the Hollowed Lloyd's algorithm, which allows one to classify vertices of the smallest set with high probability. We provide statistical guarantees on this algorithm, which is computationnally fast and simple to implement. We establish a sufficient condition for clustering in BSBM. Our results improve on previous works on BSBM, in particular in the high-dimensional regime. Second, we study the problem of assigning topics to documents using topic models. Topic models allow one to discover hidden structures in a large corpus of documents through dimension reduction. Each topic is considered as a probability distribution on the dictionary of words, and each document is considered as a mixture of topics. We introduce an algotihm called the Successive Projection Overlapping Clustering (SPOC) algorithm, inspired by the Successive Projection Algorithm for Non-negative Matrix Factorization. The SPOC algorithm is computationnally fast and simple to implement. We provide statistical guarantees on the outcome of the algorithm. In particular, we provide near matching minimax upper and lower bounds on its estimation risk under the Frobenius and the l1-norm. Our clustering procedure is adaptive in the number of topics. Finally, the third problem we study is a nonparametric regression problem. We consider local polynomial estimators with singular kernel, which we prove to be minimax optimal, adaptive to unknown smoothness, and interpolating with high probability. This property is called benign overfitting

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the late third century A. D. , the Syrian philosopher Iamblachus wrote in Greek a 10-volume work on the Pythagorean sect, which starts with a book exposing Pythagoras’s paradigmatic biography as well as the way of life practiced by his adepts. The studies presented in this dissertation aim to show how Iamblachus “neoplatonizes” the traditional material pertaining to Pythagoras without radically departing from it. The critical analysis of the contents of the “De vita Pythagorica” reveals the emphasis put by Iamblachus on the “ways of Paideia” introduced by Pythagoras and on the “virtues” which constitute the Pythagorean way of life. The introduction essay situates Iamblachus’ book on Pythagoras in the context of a vast enterprise of revival of the Pythagorean tradition, which claimed for the latter the status of Hairesis. The commentary dedicated to the chapters I-VI (1-32) points out the pregnancy of the neoplatonic / imblichean themes : rhetoric of praise and “hagiographic” discourse ; Syrian origin of Pythagoras ; Apollonian status of his soul, which has been sent by the gods ; recurrence of educational themes ; Pythagoras’ assimilation to a superior being and to a benefactor of humanity etc. The commentary on chapter XXXVI proposes a series of prosopographical files on the 235 Pythagoreans appearing in Iamblachus’ final catalogue. To our dissertation we have also appended a study of Iamblachus’ use of pseudo-Pythagorean literature, and of his extremely positive appreciation of it, and a second one dedicated to the figure of Pythagoras viewed as a charismatic master of wisdom of the archaic period, in the light of Max Weber’s sociological categories of “Charisma” and of the “Prophet”

Pełny tekst źródłaCommon usage of web information systems among consumers, business and governmental organizations require higher quality of such systems. Web information systems is such a software, which has high complexity because of the multiple technology usage and tends to rapid changes. Errors may occur because of the changes that have been made through maintenance period. Regression testing purpose is to ensure, that software changes such as new functionality or previously existed functionality modification, did not affect functionality, which was well working in the older version. In these master thesis we analyze test oracle comparators which can compare HTML response. HTML as a text comparison produces too many false positives. Meanwhile our test oracle comparator analyses HTML response as is was a tree structure. Thus implementation of the test oracle comparator algorithm enables opportunity to validate or not to validate described HTML semantic features. Therefore, we get fewer false positives and false negatives. Our implemented test oracle comparator differs from the ones described in literature or the ones proposed in market by capability not to warn tester about changes such as newly added HTML tag, which do not change overall tree structure. In this way the introduction of natural functionality growth is allowed. After improvement our test oracle comparator detects 90 % errors with the 90 % precision, whereas in the market existing test oracle comparator of the regression... [to full text]

Pełny tekst źródłaWhich intrinsic connexion exists between mathematics and policy ? Out of pure logistic bonds, all seems to separate, if not even radically to oppose, a priori, the policy - supreme art to control societies - and mathematics, exact science which governs order and quantity. These two tops of human spirit seem both in total opposition , with, on one hand, the political good-will of man and, on the other hand, mathematical determinism of the number. Taking into account distance separating, a priori, man and number, will and determinism, which essential relation - which common language - can exist between policy and mathematics ? Whereas sources, separately treating of mathematics and policy, are innumerable, it does not exist any treaty, any thesis, any notable reference, systematically putting face to face, in a direct way, these two columns of modernity. This silence of the sources astonishes, particularly because of Galileo’s apostrophe, celebrated it will have soon four centuries : "The book of Nature is written in mathematical language, the use of which is absolutly necessary to understand any word". Why wouldn’t it not be the same with Policy ? All the question is thus to know if it is possible to support the thesis that : « The book of Policy is written in mathematical language, the use of which is absolutly necessary to understand any word ». . In which case - any political theory being, at the same time, a theory of man, a theory of language and a theory of histoty -, how to imagine that the stakes hanging from this problématique could not be in line with mathematics’ universality ?

Skliris, Dionysios. "Le concept de tropos chez Maxime le Confesseur". Thesis, Paris 4, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015PA040206.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe terms logos (reason) and tropos (mode) form a very important couple in the thought of Maximus the Confessor (c. 580-662). In our PhD thesis, we are examining the contexts in which Maximus the Confessor is using the term tropos (mode) either inside the couple logos-tropos or independently. We are not developing the concept of tropos as a uniform doctrine, but we are examining it mostly as a means or as a conceptual “tool” which helps Maximus solving very different problems in diverse domains of his thought. We thus examine the use of the term tropos in contexts such as logic, the philosophical relation between universality and particularity, Trinitarian theology, the question of evil or Theodicy, cosmology, the stages of spiritual progress, the theory of the ontological actualization of beings, Christology and eschatology. In each case, we are insisting in the terms which are determined by the word tropos, the terms which are determined by the word logos, as well as the relations of contrast, opposition or simple distinction between them. We are equally examining the lexical field that is related to the term tropos. In general, logos expresses the stability and the permanence that are necessary for the existence of a meaning which could be contemplated by the philosopher, whereas tropos means a modality which opens a space for contingence, surprise and innovation inside History. The emphasis is placed on the fact that tropos is exactly a modality which can coexist with logos without annulling, altering or corrupting it

Pełny tekst źródłaIn archaic Greece, the organization of religious life in the frame of the city leads to the development of a model of communication between men and gods based on the official cult's ritual. Divine epiphany, very frequent in homer, becomes an exceptional, and therefore very significant proceeding. In lyric poetry, which is the archaic period's most important literary expression, one can distinguish three kinds of epiphany : 1 a) mythical epiphany of justice : Pindar pae. 6. 73-89; ibid. 98-120; p. 3. 24-46; Bacchylides 3. 26-63. 1 b) mythical epiphany of foundation : Alcaeus, fr. 307 l-p; pind. O. 1. 67-94; 6. 57-72; 13. 63-92; n. 10. 73-91; 9. 4. 19-66. 2) actual-personal epiphany : Alcman fr. 47 p; Sappho frr. 1. 45, 134 l. -p. These three categories correspond to three important phenomena of this period : elaboration of the concept of dike (justice), invention of the hero-foundator and development of individual poetic expression
Gévaudan, Amand. "Cassiodore, De Anima : introduction, traduction,et notes". Thesis, Montpellier 3, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015MON30054/document.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe De anima marks a turning point in the life of Cassiodorus, an Roman aristocrat, born around 484, whose family was at the service of the kings Goths. When he ended his political career, he made what he called his« conversion » which will bring him to create the the monastery of Vivarium where he retired. At this change of his life, he wrote a treaty on the soul and its virtues, an anthropological, psychological and moral reflection, which leaned on philosophic and physiological writings borrowed from the medical tradition, but it also leaned on scriptural writings and on the writings of saint Augustin. It is a treaty full of devotion seeking to find your soul. Cassiodore wants to attain the knowledge of God, and this route of the soul to God constitutes the heart of the treaty. Cassiodore christianized the rule of Socrates « nosce te ipsum », and followed the approach of saint Augustin : deum and animam scire cupio. The only french translation, almost complete (the chapter XII and the final prayer are missing), that we have, is of Stéphane de Rouville from 1874. It seems interesting to us to propose a new translation of this text with our comments and annotations. It is the purpose of this work.Key words : soul, late antiquity, saint Augustin, Holy Writings, Literature in the Middle Ages
