This article is devoted to the analysis of the most important dates in the historical chronicle of the Battle of Stalingrad and their reflection in Soviet literature of those years: journalism, poetry, stories, egodocuments of writers. Material from periodicals of the summer of 1942 is used; special attention is paid to works created during the days of the Battle of Stalingrad and included in the golden fund of Russian classics. The reconstruction of the chronicle of literary events of the summer and fall of 1942 proposed in the article highlights the special place of L.N. Tolstoy’s military prose, the traditions of which became decisive in the creation of the literary chronicle of the Battle of Stalingrad both in 1943 and in subsequent decades.

Professor John Robert Booker died in Concord Hospital in Sydney on 13 January 1998, after a long and courageously-fought battle against cancer. His death cut short a brilliant academic career and deprived the Australian geotechnical and engineering mechanics communities of one of its most eminent members. At the time of his death John Booker held a personal chair in engineering mechanics in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Sydney, and he was widely regarded as one of the finest researchers of his generation working in the field of theoretical geomechanics. His long battle with cancer did not deflect him from his life's work. While understandably, he was unable to hold formal classes during the last months of his life, it is significant that he was active in research until his very last weeks, such was his love for and dedication to his work. John Booker was a warm, friendly, caring man who touched many lives. He was mentor to most with whom he came into close contact, students and colleagues alike. He is survived by his second wife Elizabeth, daughters from his first marriage, Katie and Lucie, sister Judith and mother Joan.

Representation of the Stalingrad Battle in the British Press is examined in this study, with a focus on the coverage of events on the Volga in the regional British press. The specific portrayal of the Stalingrad Battle in the Western Post newspaper is analyzed, particularly during the defensive battles and the Soviet counteroffensive known as “Operation Uranus.” A review of all issues of the newspaper from 1942-1943 dedicated to the Stalingrad Battle is conducted. The novelty of this research lies in the introduction of a new historical source that is virtually unknown to both Russian and global readers. Typically, historiography examines materials from the central press. The relevance of this study is justified by the need to reveal a new perspective in the examination of the British press during wartime. The authors focus on how the Western Post portrayed the courage of Soviet soldiers, the professionalism of command, and the heroism of civilians in Stalingrad. It is proven that the local British press during World War II provided an overall objective picture of the battle on the Volga but paid less attention to events on the Eastern Front compared to operations in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

Godonyms as the road network elements nominations are a kind of the urban environment text that is able to record various phenomena of the surrounding reality. The article analyzes the renaming and changing the nominations of the address-forming elements of Tsaritsyn, Stalingrad and Volgograd. Such transformations reflect the socio-political and social processes that have taken place in different historical periods. Linear objects, whose nominations were changed from one to four times, were identified during the comparing cartographic and other sources of 1914, 1925, 1942, 1959 and 2022. The reasons and catalyst for this process were extralinguistic: the October Revolution, the city destruction during the Battle of Stalingrad and its further rebuilding. The ideological grounds for renaming are relevant for all the city development stages. These reasons manifest themselves the most clearly when the nominations are changed between 1914 and 1925, as well as 1925 and 1942. After 1942, the number of renames is significantly reduced. The reason of this is the restoration of buildings that were almost totally destroyed during the Battle of Stalingrad and assignation to the linear objects the same names as before the Great Patriotic War. The exceptions are hodonyms that perpetuate the military formations and military leaders memory who participated in the defense of the city.

AbstractChinese and British troops fought shoulder to shoulder against the Japanese at Yenangyaung, Burma, in mid-April 1942. The official military histories of the two nations, however, record the Yenangyaung battle and appraise the Chinese contribution in striking disagreement. To find the truth through reconciling the significant discrepancies in existence for seven decades, materials of various countries have been comparatively studied. The article will present the following conclusions from this forensic inquiry: i) the narrative of the Yenangyaung battle by William Slim, the commanding officer of the British-Chinese joint forces in the battle, is fraught with misrepresentations; and ii) the official British military history errs in denying the Chinese rescue of the British troops.

This article aims to analyze the leadership aspect in a case study of the 1942 Battle of the Coral Sea between the Allied Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. The focus of this article is on the leaders of the two sides in leading the Coral Sea battle. To approach this problem, the theoretical reference of situational, transformational, and military leadership styles is used which is the basis for analyzing aspects of leadership. The data were collected based on literature studies of books, and journals related to the Coral Sea battle in terms of leadership and analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that the Japanese side has a leader who has experience and leadership who has a transformational concept, namely Admiral Yamamoto. In addition, Rear Admiral Fletcher's breakthrough concept of the Allied fighting strategy was part of a transformational leadership style, one aspect of which was to go beyond self-interest by prioritizing organization. The leadership style, whether situational, transformational, or military, can be applied to all ranks of Indonesian Navy soldiers in carrying out daily tasks and carrying out operational tasks in the area of operation.

The article is devoted to the history of construction of one of the main railway lines between Saratov and Stalingrad from March to September 1942 during the Great Patriotic War. The strategic importance of the new railway, better known in literature as the “Volzhskaya Rocada”, increased due to the deterioration of the military situation on the Soviet-German front in the big meander of the Don in the summer of 1942 at the beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad. At the beginning of construction, in the spring of 1942, the main railway line was perceived by the party and military leadership of the USSR as extremely important for the evacuation of the wounded and the equipment of industrial enterprises. Concurrently with the deterioration of the military situation in the summer of 1942, the construction time was significantly reduced, and concurrently with the start of the battle for Stalingrad, the railway became an important logistical project to ensure the delivery of a huge amount of military cargo and equipment for the Soviet counteroffensive near Stalingrad. The Rokada was built ahead of schedule, thanks to the heroic work of the GULAG (Main Directorate of Camps and Places of Incarceration) prisoners, as well as the inhabitants of the Stalingrad region and the military personnel of the construction battalions, despite the difficult working conditions, aerial bombardments of the enemy, and the lack of building materials and tools. The article, based on declassified archival documents, shows the difficult working conditions of builders and the importance that the railway played in connection with the change in the situation on the front.

Introduction. The result of the Battle of Stalingrad supersedes the course of the battle itself in a great deal of historical literature. Therefore, it is no coincidence that in recent literature Stalingrad is increasingly becoming “mythologized” (A. Isaev), “unknown” (E. Kobyakov) or “forgotten” (A. Chunikhin), the return to the actual history of the Battle of Stalingrad takes the form of criticism of a generalized view, which on examination often turns out to be incorrect. Methods and materials. The work uses the methods of microhistory formulated in 1958 by the American historian J. Stewart. The actions of Red Army units are reconstructed on the basis of documents of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The actions of Wehrmacht units are described on the basis of captured German documents from Fund 500 of the same archive. The data from the battle log of the XXXXVIII Panzer Corps and the battle log of the 24th Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht were taken from the book of Australian historian J. Mark. Analysis. The terrain to the south and south-east of Stalingrad largely determined the course of battle of the operational group of Major-General N.M. Pozharsky and the right flank divisions of the 64th Army with units of XXXXVIII Panzer Corps of General V. Kämpf. The essence of this confrontation was a fierce struggle for commanding heights. Results. At 16:30 on 11 September Major von der Lancken’s group was disbanded, and the tanks returned to their divisions. As a result of the offensive of September 8-11 the Germans managed to capture key heights in the south of Stalingrad. Nevertheless, in these battles XXXXVIII Panzer Corps suffered losses that it could not make up for. This gave the defenders of Stalingrad a chance, which they took. Due to the large volume of archival materials, the author’s team was divided. A.K. Elokhina processed German sources, and E.V. Stelnik processed data from the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The concept of the article emerged in the course of joint discussions.

Importance. The topic of the Battle of Stalingrad is investigated, the relevance of which is beyond doubt, since any study in our country devoted to the Great Patriotic War was and remains important both for preserving historical memory and for educating the younger generation. The relevance of the study is enhanced by the fact that the stated scientific problem – the peculiarities of the tactics of the Soviet troops in the autumn-winter period of 1942 – is practically not disclosed in the scientific literature. The purpose of the study is to show how the Wehrmacht characterized the changes that occurred in the tactics of the Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad.Materials and Methods. The research and its source base are captured documents from the funds of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense (CAMO). Research methods: attribution of captured documents from the CAMO funds, comparison, content analysis, microhistoric analysis. The object of the study is the tactics of offensive and defensive battles of the Red Army in autumn– winter 1942.Results and Discussion. The specific author’s results of the study are that it shows how Stalin’s order No. 306 on improving offensive combat tactics and combat formations was characterized in the General Staff of German Ground Forces; data on the main changes in the tactics of defensive combat of Red Army are given; it shows what importance artillery was assigned in offensive and defensive battles, what changes occurred in the tank forces.Conclusion. The changes in the tactics of the offensive and defensive battles of Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad were timely, it was constantly improved and adapted to specific combat conditions, which eventually ensured the final transition of the initiative to the Soviet troops at the front.

Introduction. 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad, which became a turning point not only of the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people against the Nazi invaders and their allies, but of the entire World War II of 1939–1945. The Battle of Stalingrad covered the territories of modern Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd regions and the Republic of Kalmykia. The military and political decisions of the supreme command of the USSR and Germany on the eve of the Battle of Stalingrad in June – July 1942 became the starting point in the future battle. Methods and materials. The study used problem-chronological, comparative-historical, and statistical methods. The study of the materials was based on the principles of historicism and objectivity. During the analysis of documents from domestic archives, memoirs, statistical information, a significant amount of material was processed; the problems of the prehistory of the Battle of Stalingrad in domestic and foreign historiography were studied. Analysis. As a result of the study conducted by the authors, various directives, orders of the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command to the Soviet troops in the Stalingrad direction, as well as the enemy’s planning mechanism for the seizure of Stalingrad territory were analyzed. Results. It has been established that the Headquarters of the Supreme High Command, even before the start of hostilities in the Stalingrad direction, took measures to concentrate strategic reserves, create defensive lines, and reorganize the management of front-line troops. The authors’ contribution. V.A. Afanasenko proposed the idea and concept of the article, determined the chronology of the beginning of the preparatory actions preceding the Battle of Stalingrad. M.V. Abstract There are many explanations for the victory of the United States against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. Mistakes made by the Japanese certainly factored in the outcome and the United States also had certain advantages. However, an important if not sufficient explanation for the US victory is the pre-war preparation of the US Navy during peacetime. Designed by Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, California, from 1934 until 1938, the first Dauntless planes were delivered to the navy in 1940, well in advance of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the moment which is conventionally regarded as the US entry into the war. The pilots of the Dauntless, as I will show in this essay, were much the same; they too were the product of a peacetime Navy.

Introduction. The main information about our compatriots who distinguished themselves in the Battle of Stalingrad is contained in the award documents, which have not yet become the subject of study by Belarusian researchers. Separate facts had been appearing in the press already during the hostilities. For example, the feat of the Red Army soldier Alexey Vashchenko, who closed the embrasure of the enemy’s gates with his breast on September 5, 1942, was the subject of a publication in the division newspaper and a leaflet issued by the political department. However, the main information on the topic emerged only in the post-war time. Methods and Materials. The article is based on the information from scientific and educational literature, encyclopedias and reference books, from the memories of Soviet military leaders who took part in the Battle of Stalingrad, publications in the regional historical collections “Memory”, from the Belarusian central and local periodicals. The goal is to identify information about the participation of natives of Belarus in the Battle of Stalingrad. Results. The study showed that the Belarusians were represented both among the privates and command staff, in almost all types and branches of the military. Many of them were awarded high state decorations for military distinctions during the Battle of Stalingrad.

Abstract Australian soldiers fighting on the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea in 1942 found the Thompson submachine gun to be indispensable. Lessons derived from this battle shaped Australian jungle warfare doctrine. Australian historians acknowledge the tactical use of submachine guns in this battle, which was one of the first in Southwest Pacific Area, but have somewhat overlooked the “Tommy” gun. The emphasis has instead been given to another submachine gun, the Australian-designed Owen gun, which came slightly later. This article examines the use and usefulness of the Tommy gun for Australian soldiers on the Kokoda Trail. It establishes that this gun was tactically and comparatively more important than has been presumed. The manner in which soldiers embraced and utilized the Thompson gun was important for their tactical adaptation to jungle warfare and the defeat of the Japanese.

Three aspects of the problem are studied in this research. The first aspect is the lack of knowledge about a range of European-Ukrainian and German-Ukrainian relations covered by the press controlled by the Reichcommissariat “Ukraine” (hereinafter – RCU) in the period from its foundation up to the beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad. The second aspect is the lack of studies on the identification and description of the specific social and communication technologies of influence through the RCU press on the minds of readers. The third aspect is the inaccuracies detected in previous studies by Ukrainian researchers, in descriptions of methods used in newspapers published under the RCU censorship. To fill these gaps in knowledge, the author has chosen as an object of study the press (newspapers) of the Reichcommissariat “Ukraine” from 1 September 1941 to 17 July 1942. The subject of the study is the range and trends in the Ukrainian-European and Ukrainian-German relations covered by the RCU press in the given period. In the study, the author identified the range and trends in covering the Ukrainian-European and Ukrainian-German relations in the press of the Reichcommissariat “Ukraine” in the period from 1 September 1941 to 17 July 1942. The main results of the study are the differentiations of journalistic materials in the specified period by two criteria. By the first criterion, we identified a range of topics in journalistic materials, both in quantity and quality, in the following two groups: “Ukrainian-European relations” and ” Ukrainian-German relations.” By the second criterion of the analysis (the quantity and quality of the main trends of Ukrainian-European and Ukrainian-German relations covered by the RCU press from the first day of its foundation, 1 September 1941, to the first day of the Battle of Stalingrad, 17 July 1942) four main trends were outlined, namely: 1) insisting of the RCU press on rightness of Germany’s war against the Bolshevism; 2) imposing of the idea of necessity to work aiming at assisting the German soldiers; 3) promotion of the idea of precedence of German culture as a model for the Ukrainians; 4) propagandism of the advantages of the new, German order in Ukraine. The study confirmed the author’s hypothesis that in the period prior to the Battle of Stalingrad, the RCU newspapers employed the social and communication technologies of propaganda to more intensively promote the Ukrainian-German relations than the Ukrainian-European relations.

This article examines the potential environmental impact in one specific theatre of World War II during a specific time frame. The study begins with an examination of the major oil spills that occurred after the 1960s to place them in a relationship with the cumulative effects of smaller spills, which best describe the numerous individual spills during 1942. It provides historical detail into the German offensive against North American shipping to establish a general scale of the resulting oil spills. Finally, it will describe the environmental impacts and assess current efforts to mitigate risks of continued oil exposure from shipwrecks in sensitive marine ecosystems. This establishes the theoretical framework to answer, at least in part, the question of whether a rapid succession of small spills would cause as much damage as large spills.

High rates of desertion and surrender during the battles in North Africa in the summer of 1942 were a major factor in Eighth Army’s poor combat performance. At the time, some suggested that these problems were symptomatic of a lack of courage or even of cowardice. There are two broad strands to the conceptualization of courage and cowardice. One focuses on the willingness of the person to fight; the other puts emphasis on how actions express an individual’s ability to cope with fear. Whichever conceptualization is used, high morale motivates the soldier to fight and shields the ordinary recruit from his fear, preventing it from overcoming him in battle. Where morale fails, the soldier is left demotivated and burdened with his terror and, therefore, and is therefore prone to desertion or surrender. Because it is extremely difficult to maintain morale at a continuously high level in an environment governed by chance and managed by humans, all soldiers can find themselves in situations where their actions may be judged as cowardly. Alternatively, if they are properly motivated to fight and prepared by the state and military to deal with the unavoidable fear of combat, all soldiers can be labelled courageous. Accordingly, emotive terms should be avoided when attempting to describe rationally explainable outcomes. The undoubtedly negative connotations attached to cowardice in battle and the positive ones attached to courage are, therefore, arguably unhelpful in understanding Eighth Army’s performance in the summer of 1942 and the human dimension in warfare more generally.

The paper analyzes domestic and foreign scientific comprehension of Germany’s using the eastern formations of the Wehrmacht in the battle for the Caucasus in 1942-1943. Against the backdrop of the politicization of military collaborationism in modern Russian science and the lack of historiographic research, the authors consider it this issue as relevant to study in order to identify the dynamics and academic challenges on the way to its full-fledged tackling. It is emphasized that the most favorable conditions for highlighting the problem of involving the eastern formations of the Wehrmacht in the battle for the Caucasus have developed in Russian historiography in the last three decades, when the previous bans on versatile coverage of the issue and access to archival documents and foreign data were lifted. The studies of post-Soviet Transcaucasian historians offer a significant amount of data and are not without conceptual discrepancies and risks of politicization. It is shown that the English and German (West German) historiography had a number of initial advantages over the Soviet/Russian one, including access to documents covering in detail various aspects regarding the creation and use of eastern formations. By the 1990s foreign historians have brought the study to a qualitatively new level in terms of factual material. However, some of their conceptual provisions, for example, an exaggeration of the voluntary nature of the Soviet citizens military collaborationism, according to the authors, are unacceptable for modern Russian historical science. The analysis of domestic and foreign historiography reveals the need for a conceptual consolidation of issue of the German eastern units involving in the battle for the Caucasus in the framework of a separate study based on the existing academic background.

The Battle of Midway (June 4 – 6, 1942) is considered one of the pivotal naval encounters of the Second World War. The battle has been examined in detail within both popular and scholarly literature, and a common opinion found in virtually all of these examinations is that Japanese search efforts on the morning of June 4, which were intended to determine if any U.S. naval forces were present, were inadequate. Japanese search procedures have been criticized on many separate grounds, but one fault implicit in many of these criticisms is that Japanese search plans were based upon the assumption that a searching aircraft that came within a predefined range of an enemy surface ship would inevitably sight that vessel. Intuitively, a 100% detection rate seems highly unlikely. It seems more probable that a myriad of factors influence detection probability, including characteristics of cloud cover, number and sizes of surface ships involved, relative courses, and speeds of the search aircraft and surface ships. This study employed a Monte Carlo approach built around modified GIS viewshed analyses techniques to investigate the influence of these and other factors had upon detection probability.

The article is devoted to the confrontation between the Soviet and German troops on the passes of the Bzyb Range in August – September 1942. As is known, by this time the Wehrmacht forces had suffered serious de-feats from the Soviet armed forces near Moscow, Rostov, and Tikhvin. The confrontation took a protracted character, so, planning the summer campaign of 1942, the German command decided to seize the most im-portant economic areas in the south of the USSR. The battle for the Caucasus included both the capture of the region’s passes and access to the Black Sea. It was precisely such fights that became the catalyst for the emer-gence of special mountain rifle detachments of the Red Army and NKVD troops, which turned the situation in the highlands in our direction. When writing the article, the authors used archival documents from the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (Podolsk, Moscow Region, Russian Federation), published on the “Memory of the People” portal (pamyat-naroda.ru), as well as the works of foreign, Soviet and Russian researchers.
