General rules

In accordance with the requirements of Vancouver Style, the following template should be used for referencing an archival document:

Author(s). Document title. Date of document. Located at: Name of Archive, City; Document location.

N.B.:

  • In the Document location element, specify the data for identifying the document in the archive: collection title and number, file, folder, etc. Give such details separated by commas.
  • If the city is not well-known, add the country separated by a comma.
  • For personal communication such as letters, Vancouver Style requires adding the connection phrase ‘Letter to:’ before the title of the document.

For an archival document available online, use the following bibliographic reference template:

Author(s). Document title [Internet]. Date of document [cited date cited]. Located at: Name of Archive, City; Document location. Available from: URL
