Wallis, Simeon Quentin. "Young nones : young people of no religion". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2015. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/77904/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Identifying what is important in the self-interpretations of young people who report no religion, this study examines how relationships of difference to religion relate to matters of importance. Twenty-three Year 10 pupils (14- and 15-year-olds) from two non-denominational secondary schools in the West Midlands who ticked the ‘no religion’ box on a questionnaire were asked to take photographs to represent what was important to them. These were used as prompts for discussions during one-to-one interviews that explored what was important to these young people, before asking questions about religion and their reasons for reporting none. Taking a relational approach to the study of non-religion (Lee 2012a; Quack 2014), this thesis identifies participants’ relationships of difference to their constructions of religion. Understanding identity as a self-interpretation relating to things that matter to us (Taylor 1989), it determines whether and how relationships of difference are significant in participants’ self-interpretations and how, therefore, ticking the ‘no religion’ box on a questionnaire relates to issues of identity. Participants’ constructions of religion and their decision to report none were influenced by what they considered to be matters of importance, and what they considered to be important was reflected in their beliefs about life, the end of life, life after death, God, the supernatural and prayer. While many participants held beliefs adapted from religious traditions, they considered these to be different from those they associated with religion. The question of whether participants expressed non-religious identities depends on the relative significance of relationships of difference to religion in participants’ self-interpretations. For the majority of participants, relationships of difference to religion were not of central importance, meaning that very few should be categorised as having non-religious self-identities. Implications are drawn for the study of youth, religion and non-religion and for the teaching of religion and belief in schools.

Gowland-Pryde, Ronda Jane. "Leaping forward : from 'young offenders' to 'young artists'". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/411961/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study aimed to examine the impact of a Gallery-supported Arts Award programme on young people who have offended. Using a mixed methods approach, which principally employed qualitative and biographical techniques, this research embedded an innovative typology based on the memoirs of Brian Dillon. The typology helped to stimulate the memory recall of participants, and provided structure to the collation and analysis of the data. Conducted in two phases, I began by examining the impact of the Gallery-supported Summer Arts Colleges run from 2007 to 2011 on young people. In the second phase, impacts were explored through the experiences of young people who attended a Weekly Arts Award programme from 2012 to 2013. In all, six purposive young people participated in this study. The data was further informed by semi-structured interviews with Artist-Educators, Youth Offending Service Workers, session observations, Artist-Educator reflective journals, associated visual data and project reports. Conceptualising the Arts Award programmes as a type of 'rite of passage', I considered how young people could potentially be transformed. The findings from this study demonstrate how the two different programmes can cause a positive effect on the individual young people in their daily lives, as well as highlighting wider social impacts aligned to the Arts Award criteria and the impact assessments of Matarasso. In addition to discussing the implications of this study and providing future recommendations, the outcomes of this research showed that: (1) Arts Award accredited programmes as a type of rite of passage can improve the accessibility of art for young people who have offended; (2) they are effective in supporting young people in desistance from crime; and (3) the use of contemporary art and galleries as part of these programmes can help support young people's re-engagement with learning, thereby helping to transform 'young offenders' into 'young artists'.

Elgeness, Jaclyn Ann. "Young thinkers". Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4760.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Young Thinkers is a collection of short fiction dealing with what it means to earn wisdom in the twenty-first century. When our phones can remember everything for us, and we're plagued by a sense that everything has already been said and digitally cataloged, insight becomes even more important, particularly to the thoughtful characters explored throughout the collection. The prolonged American adolescence facilitated by the economic crisis, as well as the societal acceptance of marrying and having children much later in life, creates an atmosphere of intense self-doubt. A young man working at a gas station after college witnesses a high school boy die in a hit and run, and he longs to comfort others at the vigil. Another young man decides he would rather rob houses than return to community college while wondering at ways to extend his lifespan. Young women struggle to feel important and independent, but find themselves assuaging their fears with cigarettes and alcohol. These characters yearn for the insight and experience that would make them decidedly and authoritatively adult.

Abstract (sommario):

Young Ones is a collection of short stories about young adult narrators navigating interpersonal relationships. In this collection, both males and females living in the Pacific Northwest interact with family, friends, and lovers. Through these interactions, they come to discover aspects of themselves at crucial moments in their lives. Many of these stories are less concerned with plot and more concerned with inner truths about relationships and selves. These revelations occur through epiphanies at the end of the stories, and the settings help provide subtext. It is my hope that these stories provide further depth to the young adult genre.

Banks, Hannah. "Young mothers speak out: Young Pākehā women's experiences of motherhood". The University of Waikato, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2519.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Early motherhood is a much debated and highly contentious topic. This research aimed to explore young Pākehā women's experiences of motherhood using a feminist qualitative framework. Twelve women, six current young mothers and six former young mothers, were interviewed via focus groups and individual interviews. The analysis revealed that Pākehā culture constructs young mothers as problematic because they challenge the 'traditional' family dominant in Pākehā culture. By having children prior to, rather than after, workforce participation and achieving economic independence, young mothers challenge the prescribed life trajectory for Pākehā women. The women in this study discussed both the positive aspects and the challenges they faced as young mothers. In contrast to common public perceptions and media representations of early motherhood as negative, motherhood positively transformed the women's lives. This was discussed in terms of ceasing destructive activities and gaining motivation to return to education. The young mothers in this study had flexible parenting styles, which allowed them freedom from Pākehā cultural pressure to 'do motherhood' in a particular way. As young mothers, the women had high energy levels and anticipated early future freedom from childcare duties to pursue their dreams. Challenges discussed by the women included incorporating unanticipated early motherhood into long-held life goals, feeling exhausted, having a lack of time for themselves and having too little support. Financial hardship, poverty, judgment and stigma surfaced as major challenges which affected all areas of the women's lives. However, the women also resisted this discrimination by using a range of strategies, which positions them as women with agency, challenging their representation within literature as passive victims. Young women will not use services where they perceive they will be judged for being who they are. As levels of support appear to determine how young women experience motherhood, services have a vital role to play in supporting young mothers. The findings of this study highlighted the complex and contradictory nature of the young mothers' stories, presenting a challenge to simple and stereotypical negative discourses of early motherhood.

Brown, Elizabeth. "Ambitious Young Woman". Digital Commons at Loyola Marymount University and Loyola Law School, 2020. https://digitalcommons.lmu.edu/etd/919.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Ambitious Young Woman is an hour-long dramedy layered with warmth, gravitas, and humor. With dialogue that flies by at the speed of light and a protagonist we would walk into battle with, heart and goodwill lie at the center of the series. While the premise centers around politics on a university campus, the ramifications of the students’ actions will ripple across the entire nation. Staunch liberals of Gen Z are our heroes and they give no mercy when pursuing their progressive ideals. However, it is their evolution from young men and women into adulthood that we’re returning week-to-week for. Even as they bring down the conservative bastions of ‘The Baby Boomers’, it is the characters interpersonal lives that bring about the greatest intrigue.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Fuels management in eucalyptus plantations is essential to minimise the impact of wildfire. Prescribed burning has the potential to reduce the fuel hazard in plantations, but is not routinely conducted due to concerns relating to tree damage. Through a series of experimental burns, the issues of tree damage are addressed and minimum tree sizes are recommended that are capable of withstanding the effects of low to moderate intensity fires. Data was collected between 2005 and 2007 over six sites, two species, and three age classes. Tree response results came from multiple measurements of over 1700 individual trees. The fuel characteristics commonly found in sub-tropical eucalypt plantations from age four to eleven are described and quantified. These fuel characteristics are related to fire behaviour and new fire behaviour models, specific to young eucalypt plantations, are presented. The fuel characteristics that most influence fire behaviour in young eucalypt plantations are fuel load, fuel height, and fuel moisture content. These characteristics can be used to predict the rate of spread of a plantation fire under benign wind conditions. A novel technique for assessing the extent of stem damage in eucalypts is developed and described. This technique enables immediate assessment of stem damage following fire; previous assessment techniques recommend waiting a considerable period of time (up to 2 years) until dead bark dropped off and fire scars were evident. This new assessment technique is likely to be suitable for post-fire assessment of any eucalypt species and will provide forest managers with the capability of deciding whether to leave a stand to ???grow-on??? or commence recovery operations. Minimum stem sizes recommended to ensure no long-term damage are between 5 ??? 8 cm DBH (diameter at breast height, i.e. 1.3m above ground level) for Eucalyptus dunnii (Dunn???s white gum) and 5 ??? 13 cm DBH for Corymbia spp. (spotted gum) depending on the quantity of fuel around the stem. Stem sizes vary between species because of the variation in bark thickness between species. This thesis provides all the necessary information to conduct prescribed burning operations in young eucalypt plantations.

Rezek, Robin R. Rezek Robin R. "Young Children in Worship". Thesis, Concordia University Chicago, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3573703.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Westerhoff (2000) reminds Christian congregations that children become members of the Christian Church from the moment they are baptized. Therefore, infants and young children should be present during congregational corporate worship services. It is through mentoring and modeling of the Christian faith that young children have optimal opportunity to grow in their relationship with God.

The goal of this qualitative case study was to look at what happens during corporate worship from the perspective of young children. Data were gathered from thirteen worship participants (ages five-nine) from two Lutheran congregations in order to determine the elements of corporate worship that help them encounter God.

The findings reveal that intergenerational corporate worship provides an opportunity for the mentoring/modeling dynamic that is central to Westerhoff's (2000) theory. The participants in this study report having meaningful encounters with God during church through various elements. Future research should replicate this inquiry in Christian congregations of other denominations.

Beaumont, Meredith Alexandra Hanne. "Young carers and education". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604284.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Informed by the sociology of childhood, children's rights and the work of John Dewey, this mixed methods study used an exploratory sequential design to analyse the relationship between caring and education. Semi-structured interviews and an online survey involved young carers and a control group from across England and Wales. Qualitative data were analysed thematically and quantitative data were subject to statistical testing. Demographic, familial, and school factors were included in tests for association. Variations in levels of care provided, care recipient and types of care were also incorporated. An email survey of schools and local authorities provided an assessment of existing policies or strategies with specific regard to meeting the educational needs of young carers. Findings revealed several new contributions to knowledge. There was a reduced likelihood for young carers to report that their parents attended parents' evenings or be involved in schools in other manners, such as in the Parent Teacher Association. This was reported to arise from the inaccessibility of schools for a parent with a disability or health condition. Young carers were as likely to believe education is important for their future, although they were more likely to aspire to pursue a 'caring profession' beyond education. Those caring for a parent/guardian with a mental health issue, substance misuse problem, learning difficulty or comorbidity, experience a higher rate of detrimental emotional outcomes. Furthermore, those with the most negative adaptation to caring were also those least able to do most school work without assistance. Potential young carers with high caring levels were discovered within the control group sample. Data show for the first time that these young people had predominantly sibling, domestic or household tasks rather than personal, emotional and financial/practical responsibilities, which young carers do. However, both of these groups report more specific and negative experiences and outcomes in school than children with no caring role. General and specific policy suggestions are made particularly for addressing the lack of young carers' policies and practice at the school level. Improved teacher training, focus on identification and targeted interventions are discussed, to address the needs of young carers educationally.

Larner, Andrew Robert. "Composing for young choirs". Thesis, University of Kent, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.587568.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This submission is comprised of a variety of compositions for young choirs. Composing for such groups is distinct from composing for other ensembles.because the nature of the voice.is not static: it changes markedly during childhood and adolescence. General patterns of vocal development in childhood and adolescence are reflected in these compositions, with the aim of utilising young voices fully but avoiding making potentially damaging demands on them. The range of styles and some significant characteristics of the compositions are informed by other developmental factors: changes in listening preferences and the evidence of developing musical understanding demonstrated in young people's compositions. When young people listen to music, their openness to style first narrows and later broadens; when they compose music, different musical characteristics appear to be primary focal points of different stages in learning. These psychological factors can be compared with (variable) formants - the composer's task is to create music that can "resonate" with groups of young singers.

Bartz, Deborah Teo. "Young Children’s Meta-Ignorance". Thesis, Harvard University, 2017. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:33051609.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Meta-ignorance is an awareness of one’s own knowledge or lack of knowledge. The goal of this dissertation is to examine the development of children’s meta-ignorance between 14 months and 42 months. I examine the hypothesis that children have some awareness of their own epistemic states, notably states of knowledge and ignorance. In Study 1, eight children’s use of the mental verb know was examined when they were between 18 and 36 months. Children (from the Child Language Data Exchange System) used know to affirm their own knowledge and that of their interlocutor. When they used know in the context of asking a question, they typically asked about their interlocutor’s knowledge states and not their own. Conversely, they often denied their own knowledge but rarely their interlocutor’s. Finally, they rarely referred to a third party’s knowledge. In Study 2, 64 children’s production of the flip gesture (hold two hands palm up out to the side to communicate “I don’t know”) was examined when they were between 14 and 42 months. The video recordings were from the Language Development Project. Flip gestures were observed at 14 months, which is four months before a minority of children were first observed saying: “I don’t know.” Children often flipped following their interlocutors’ comments and questions, suggesting that children used flips in a dialogic fashion. When children flipped, their interlocutors often interpreted flips as an expression of ignorance and responded accordingly. Study 3 involved an experiment in which 52 children aged 16 to 37 months were presented with familiar and unfamiliar pictures and asked to label them. For familiar pictures, children mostly produced the correct name. For unfamiliar pictures, children were more likely to display signs of uncertainty, including turning to gaze at an adult, producing a filled pause such as Um, asking for help, and saying I don’t know. Children’s ability to produce I DON’T KNOW flips, to say I don’t know, and to express uncertainty when asked to name unfamiliar objects indicates that they come to express a simple understanding of knowledge and ignorance in the course of the second and third year.

DE, LUCA MASSIMO. "The Vela molecular ridge young population: from pre-stellar condensations to young clusters". Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/472.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Roberto Buonanno.
The aim of this thesis is the characterization of the proto-stellar population of a star forming region (about one square degree) of the Vela Giant Molecular Cloud Complex, paying particular attention on the correlation between young objects and physical and morphological characteristics of the cloud interstellar medium. As a by-product, observational targets for new generation instrumentation have been also identified. Giant Molecular Clouds contain over 80% of the molecular hydrogen content of the Galaxy and are now considered responsible for most of the star birth. They thus represent the most promising sites for the research activity on star formation. By analysing the large-scale cloud structure we describe the gas-dust condensations inside which collapse into new stars begins. It follows a detailed inspection of both the infrared emission arising from such condensations and of the mass-loss phenomena (jets and outflows) associated with the youngest objects. This allows us to draw interesting conclusions regarding the star-forming modalities, both within each condensation and, more in general, within the cloud, enabling a comparison with other Galactic clouds. The large analysed database covers the range from Near-Infrared to millimeter wavelengths and has been obtained by means of both ground based and space-born facilities (we present also the first results of the on-going study of maps acquired by the Spitzer Space Telescope). The contribution given by this study to the present-day research activity on star formation mostly concerns the debates regarding: (i) the spatial relation between sites of star birth and interstellar material distribution, (ii) the link between the mass distribution of the cloud condensations and the Initial Mass Function, (iii) the statistics of different evolutionary stages of young objects within dust and molecular cores, (iv) the identification of interesting sources for a future investigation by means of more powerful instrumentation (e.g. ALMA and Herschel). This work has been carried out within the Infrared group of the Astronomical Observatory of Rome (INAF-OAR) under the supervision of Dr. Teresa Giannini, Prof. Dario Lorenzetti (INAF-OAR), and on the behalf of the University "Tor Vergata" of Rome (supervisor Prof. Roberto Buonanno).

Pala, Erkan. "Community policing and young people : a critical insight into young people's perceptions in Leicester". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21108.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The repercussions associated with young people's exclusion from policing can be detrimental. The police will lack a basic understanding of young people s problems, needs and expectations. In these situations, young people will be less inclined to report crimes and their own victimisation to the police, provide intelligence, and participate in the criminal justice system. This study is intended to provide a critical appraisal of young people s perceptions of Police and Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and community policing in Leicester, in an effort to delineate the implications of their exclusion from local policing and crime related issues. Community policing is a well-known policing philosophy, particularly for repairing police public relations through engagement and problem solving. The findings demonstrate that despite the fundamental benefits associated with community policing, conventional methods of engagement and problem solving have failed to reach out to young people who are, nevertheless, particularly enthusiastic about collaborating with the police. However, whilst the vast majority of young people are positive about getting involved in policing, there are important variations within young people in their perceptions and attitudes towards the police. Young ethnic minorities in general, blacks in particular, were passive and reluctant to collaborate with the police due to their experiences of stop and search and other repercussion associated with the law enforcement style of policing. A lot of these problems can be subsided by diverting police resources to community policing, but there are going to be strong financial, organisational and cultural challenges.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last decades the number of English language teaching materials for young language learners on the market has increased substantially. Even though there has been considerable research about ELT materials, little is known about textbooks for young language learners in the EFL context. The objectives of this study were to explore and compare the perceptions of EFL textbooks from the viewpoints of parents, teachers and young learners. The present study employed mixed methods in an exploratory sequential design. Data collection and analysis consisted of two phases. Data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with 58 participants in Phase 1. The results of Phase 1 were developed and expanded in Phase 2. In the second phase, 325 participants were involved. Participants in the study were young learners who are primary school-aged children and participate in private English education, parents and teachers in South Korea. The results of Phase 1 identified nine themes relating to EFL textbooks: (1) Language learning; (2) Non-language outcomes; (3) Appropriateness; (4) Variety; (5) Appeal to learners; (6) Ease of teaching; (7) Quality and content; (8) Imported vs. local textbook; and (9) Concerns. The results of Phase 2 suggested attitudinal commonalities among the three groups such as overall language learning, and variety of genre. Dissimilarities in the three groups were also found such as vocabulary learning and written in English only. The results of the research add to the growing body of knowledge on the development of EFL materials, providing insight into the perceptions of parents, teachers and young learners. Implications for future research, teaching practice, teacher education and material development are discussed.

Horton, Nancy Spence. "Young Adult Literature and Censorship: A Content Analysis of Seventy-Eight Young Adult Books". Thesis, North Texas State University, 1986. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc331381/.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to analyze a representative seventy-eight current young adult books to determine the extent to which they contain items which are objectionable to would-be censors. Seventy-eight books were identified which fit the criteria of popularity and literary quality. Content analysis was selected as the quantitative method of research. Each of the seventy-eight young adult books was analyzed for the six categories which were established through prior research. The six categories include profanity, sex, violence, parent conflict, drugs, and condoned bad behavior. These categories were tallied each time they occurred in the books. Reliability was assured with a rating of .98 by a committee of six professionals. The data reveal that profanity occurred more times in the seventy-eight books than the other five categories with a total of 5,616. The category of drugs was noted 4,171 times. References to sex followed in number with 3,174. The categories which occurred the least were violence with 1,849 occurrences and condoned bad behavior with only 489 occurrences. By applying a frequency index formula to determine the number of objections in each book in relation to the number of pages, a comparison among the books could be made. The analysis, synthesis, and interpretation of the data led to several conclusions. Local school systems should establish and follow procedures for book selection and removal. The interests of young adults are met by the presentation of a variety of ideas and realistic plots and settings. The books, even with objectionable items, are chosen by teachers and students to read; therefore, they should be accessible in secondary school libraries as they provide valuable reading experiences for young adults. This study established that young adult literature serves an important function in providing quality reading material of interest to teenagers. These reading experiences help broaden the learning environment for young adults.

Gattenhof, Sandra Jane. "Young people and performance : the impact of deterritorialisation on contemporary theatre for young people". Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2004. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/15934/1/Sandra_Gattenhof.pdf.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Within contemporary performance arenas young people are fast becoming part of the vanguard of contemporary performance. Performativity, convergence and openness of form are key animating concepts in the landscape of Theatre for Young People (TYP). To ignore what is taking place in the making of performance for and by young people is to ignore the new possibilities in meaning-making and theatrical form. In this period of rapid technological change young people are embracing and manipulating technology (sound, image, music) to represent who they are and what they want to say. Positioned as "cultural catalysts", "the new pioneers" and "first navigators" young people are using mediatised culture and digital technologies with ease, placing them at the forefront of a shift in cultural production. Performance commentators (Schnechner 2002; Shusterman 2000; Auslander 1999; Hill and Paris 2001; Phelan 1993 and Kershaw 1992) believe that there has been a profound shift in the nature of making theatre and performance works. The forces of globalisation, the new economy and advancements in new media technologies have affected young people's making of performance. Three key concepts animate contemporary young people's performance devising and presenting processes. These concepts can be defined as: performativity, convergence and openness of form. These three categories can be harnessed under the umbrella concept of deterritorialisation. The processes of deterritorialisation allows for the synthesis of new cultural and performance genres by fragmenting and hybridising traditional cultural categories and forms including the use of new media technologies. Almost half of all TYP performances now incorporate the technologies of reproduction. The relationship between live and mediated forms, the visceral and the virtual is allowing young people to navigate and make meaning of cultural codes and cultural forms as well as to engage in an open dialogue with their audiences. This thesis examines the way young people are using elements of deterritorialisation to become producers of new performance genres.

Abstract (sommario):
Mental illness is common, and usually starts early in life. However, the majority of those affected never seek mental health care. The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge about help-seeking young adults with mental illness in order to improve diagnostic procedures in clinical psychiatry. A group of young adult psychiatric out-patients (n=217) were consecutively invited to participate in the study between October 2002 and September 2003. Altogether 200 (92%) agreed to participate. Among them, there were 161 (80%) women and 39 (20%) men. Participants’ mean age was 22.4±1.9 years. All participants were carefully and comprehensively assessed with respect to axes I, II, IV and V in the DSM-IV. Psychiatric disorders and personality disorders were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for axis I disorders and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for axis II disorders. Psychosocial and environmental problems (axis IV) were evaluated through structured interviewing by a social worker and by self-assessment with a questionnaire. Professional and patient ratings on the Global Assessment of Functioning scale were compared before and after treatment. Patients also reported on the Swedish universities Scales of Personality, the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Screening Inventory-Retrospect and the Coddington’s life event scale. Taken together, the young adult, psychiatric outpatients were characterized by an early onset of their mental disorders, by co-morbidity, by being female and by having mood or anxiety disorders. There were no significant differences between self-referred and those referred by medical professionals according to either number of current or lifetime diagnoses. Childhood onset of depression was associated with more severe symptoms, more psychosocial risk factors, and more childhood developmental delays. Axis IV psychosocial stress categories were related to the presence of axis I disorders, personality disorders, co-morbidity, and impaired functioning. Agreement between patients’ and professionals’ ratings on the GAF scale was good before treatment and excellent after treatment. In summary, the findings suggest that direct self-referral to specialized psychiatric care does not seem to be associated with overutilization of such care. Childhood onset of depression is associated with a more complex illness. The revised axis IV according to DSM-IV seems to have concurrent validity, but is still hampered by limited reliability. And finally, the results support the usefulness of the self-report GAF instrument for measuring outcome in psychiatric care.

Yeckering, Kara. "Young Childrens' Understanding of Superstitions". TopSCHOLAR®, 2003. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/574.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to examine young children's understanding of superstitions—specifically bad luck superstitions. Children between the ages of 4 and 9 received a set of interview questions concerning their experiences with superstitions, their beliefs about the efficacy of superstitions, and their knowledge of the mental and physical components of superstitions. Participants also completed a belief task designed to assess the relative importance of belief and action in superstitions. The findings indicate developmental patterns in children's awareness of superstitions and beliefs in efficacy of superstitions. With age, children demonstrated a significantly greater awareness of superstitions. In contrast, children demonstrated a significant decrease in beliefs in the efficacy of superstitions by the age of seven. Regarding children's perceptions of the necessary components of superstitions, there were important similarities in the developmental pattern of children's responses. Across all age groups, the action component of a superstition (as opposed to a belief component) was found to be the primary factor in effectiveness of superstitions to "bring bad luck." These findings are discussed in relation to children's beliefs about good luck superstitions, magic, wishing, prayer, and the potential modes of cultural transmission of supernatural beliefs.

Morley, Sharon. "Young women's narratives of violence". Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2007. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.490803.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a growing interest in females who commit acts of violence with the mass media claiming that we are witnessing the emergence of a breed of new violent females. This thesis, however, challenges the argument that we are seeing the emergence of sassy, independent, violent females who are imitating, or in some circumstances being more violent, than males. Based on narrative interviews with a group of young women in the North West of England, this thesis reveals the pervasive nature of social control mechanisms that are at play in these young women's lives. In order to adhere to entrenched ideas of appropriate female behaviour, these young women employ a variety of preventative strategies in order to avoid or negotiate violence, sexual or otherwise. As such these strategies were not only employed to prevent violence by males, but also to prevent violence from other women, thus demonstrating women's universal fear of men and their particular fear ofother women. This thesis also builds on Kelly's (1988) continuum of violence theory, suggesting that a matrix of violence is better able to capture the subtleties and complexities ofviolence in the everyday lives ofthese young women. As such, there is no clear-cut distinction between victims and perpetrators, thus disrupting the dichotomy in which women are seen either as innocent victims or as offenders. Rather, the young women may fmd themselves at various places in this matrix as the dynamics of a conflict change. These conflicts are not only evident with regard to physical violence but also with the young women either being victims, or perpetrators of, what was termed 'mean' or 'bitchy' behaviour. However, the author suggests that we should be careful not to conflate the severity of this 'mean' behaviour with the harm inflicted by physical violence. The young women's motivations for using violence are also explored. Important here is the concept of 'respect', which, it is argued is not gender specific. Rather the young women regarded respect in the same marmer as boys and men; it gave them status among their peers. However, it was found that ideas of respectability and respectable femininity were gender specific. It was also evident that these latter terms carried different meanings for the young women at various times in their lives depending upon the circumstances and situations they found themselves in.
