Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Macroscopic assemblies of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been doubling in conductivity every three years and have now surpassed 10 MS/m [1]. They are promising for replacing copper- or aluminum-based electrical cables in applications where flexibility or weight savings are critical considerations. Understanding of transport processes in these ordered CNT assemblies is critical towards further conductivity improvement; yet, fiber-level transport is still poorly understood. Here, we studied thermoelectric and electrical properties of aligned CNT fibers and bundles produced by solution spinning. We first measured thermoelectric properties while tuning the Fermi energy and demonstrated a giant thermoelectric power factor [2]. We then performed temperature- and magnetic field-dependent conductivity measurements. In contrast to the majority of transport studies of CNT networks [3,4], our aligned CNT fibers exhibited a metallic behavior in a wide temperature range (30-300 K), i.e., conductivity monotonically increasing with decreasing temperature, which we attribute to the excellent sample morphology. At temperatures below 30 K, we observed a gradual decrease of conductivity with decreasing temperature, together with negative magnetoresistance, consistent with the weak localization theory for disordered metals. We determined the dimensionality and coherence lengths of carriers via analysis of the weak localization behavior. In addition to macroscopic CNT fibers with diameters of ~10 μm, we also conducted conductivity measurements on individual crystalline CNT bundles (with diameters ~ 50 nm and lengths ~ 30 μm) that constitute the fibers. Abstract (sommario):
The Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) is designed to minimize the shortage of drinking water in the Kathmandu valley. Although the project was supposed to be completed by 2008, due to various problems, it is still difficult to forecast the exact date of completion. This paper quantifies the downstream effects of diverting water from the Melamchi (Stage-I), Yangri (Stage-II) and Larke (Stage-III) rivers under current as well as future climate scenarios. The Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was used in the analysis. Result shows that in the Stage-I water transfer plan, average inflow reduction in the immediate downstream sub-basin in the dry and wet seasons are 36% and 7% respectively, where as in Stage-II the inflow reductions are 38% for the dry season and 8% for the wet season. In Stage-III, inflow reductions are 38% in the dry season and 7% in the wet season. The impact of the water transfer schemes on various changes in water management within the Melamchi River irrigation command area was also tested. BUDGET (soil, water and salt balance) model was used to quantify crop water requirement of Melamchi River command area when the irrigated area is increased and the cropping pattern is changed. Simulation results of crop water requirement in intensive water use conditions show that present Melamchi River command area can be increased by 2.2 times under current climate projection, whereas the area can be increased 1.4 times in 2030s and by 2.0 times in 2050s.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3126/hn.v11i1.7199 Hydro Nepal Special Issue: Conference Proceedings 2012 pp.23-29

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The overactivation of NF-κB signaling is a key hallmark for the pathogenesis of extranodal natural killer/T cell lymphoma (ENKTL), a very aggressive subtype of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma yet with rather limited control strategies. Previously, we found that the dysregulated exportin-1 (also known as CRM1) is mainly responsible for tumor cells to evade apoptosis and promote tumor-associated pathways such as NF-κB signaling. Methods: Herein we reported the discovery and biological evaluation of a potent small molecule CRM1 inhibitor, LFS-1107. We validated that CRM1 is a major cellular target of LFS-1107 by biolayer interferometry assay (BLI) and the knockdown of CRM1 conferred tumor cells with resistance to LFS-1107.Results: We found that LFS-1107 can strongly suppresses the growth of ENKTL cells at low-range nanomolar concentration yet with minimal effects on human platelets and healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Treatment of ENKTL cells with LFS-1107 resulted in the nuclear retention of IkBa and consequent strong suppression of NF-kB transcriptional activities, NF-kB target genes downregulation and attenuated tumor cell growth and proliferation. Furthermore, LFS-1107 exhibited potent activities when administered to immunodeficient mice engrafted with human ENKTL cells. Conclusions: Therefore, LFS-1107 holds great promise for the treatment of ENKTL and may warrant translation for use in clinical trials.Funding: Yang's laboratory was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant: 81874301), the Fundamental Research Funds for Central University (Grant: DUT22YG122) and the Key Research project of 'be Recruited and be in Command' in Liaoning Province (Personal Target Discovery for Metabolic Diseases).

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Plasma cell mastitis (PCM) is a nonbacterial breast inflammation with severe and intense clinical manifestation yet treatment methods for PCM are still rather limited. Although the mechanism of PCM remains unclear, mounting evidences suggest that the dysregulation of immune system is closely associated with the pathogenesis of PCM. Drug combinations or combination therapy could exert improved efficacy and reduced toxicity through hitting multiple discrete cellular targets. Methods: We have developed a knowledge graph architecture towards immunotherapy and systematic immunity that consists of herbal drug-target interactions with a novel scoring system to select drug combinations based on target-hitting rates and phenotype relativeness. To this end, we employed this knowledge graph to identify an herbal drug combination for PCM and we subsequently evaluated the efficacy of the herbal drug combination in clinical trial. Results: Our clinical data suggests that the herbal drug combination could significantly reduce the serum level of various inflammatory cytokines, downregulate serum IgA and IgG level, reduce the recurrence rate and reverse the clinical symptoms of PCM patients with improvements of general health status. Conclusions: In summary, we reported that an herbal drug combination identified by knowledge graph can alleviate the clinical symptoms of plasma cell mastitis patients. We demonstrated that the herbal drug combination holds great promise as an effective remedy for PCM, acting through the regulation of immunoinflammatory pathways and improvement of systematic immune level. In particular, the herbal drug combination could significantly reduce the recurrence rate of PCM, a major obstacle for PCM treatment. Our data suggests that the herbal drug combination is expected to feature prominently in future PCM treatment.Funding: Liu's lab was supported by grants from the Public Health Science and Technology Project of Shenyang (Grant: 22-321-32-18), Y. Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the constitutional crisis of 1983, which focused on the King’s power to assent to legislation in relation to federal legislation and on the State Rulers’ equivalent power in relation to State legislation. The crisis should be viewed while considering that amendments to the Federal Constitution are common in Malaysia. However, intense national interest was generated by the refusal of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ahmad Shah, to assent to the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 1983. What was the significance of the 1983 Amendment Bill? What were the motives of the government in mooting the amendments? The chapter reviews the chain of events and clarifies many of the constitutional issues that were clouded by the confrontation between the dissenting parties.

Huang, Siu-Chi. Essentials of Neo-Confucianism. Greenwood, 1999. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400647444.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Huang's book analyzes the major Neo-Confucian philosophers from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries. Focusing on metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical philosophical issues, this study presents the historical development of the Neo-Confucian school, an outgrowth of ancient Confucianism, and characterizes its thought, background, and influence. Key concepts—for example ^Utai-ji (supreme ultimate), ^Uxin (mind), and ^Uren (humanity)—as interpreted by each thinker are discussed in detail. Also examined are the two major schools that developed during this period, Cheng-Zhu, School of Principle, and Lu-Wang, School of Mind. These schools, despite different philosophical orientations, were convinced that their common goal, to bring about a harmonious relationships between man and the universe and between man and man, could be achieved through different ways of philosophizing. To understand the Chinese mind, it is necessary to understand Neo-Confucianism as a reformation of early Confucianism. This analytical presentation of major Neo-Confucian philosophers, from the eleventh to the sixteenth centuries, examines Zhou Dun-yi (1017-1073), Shao Yong (1011-1077), Zhang Zai (1020-1077), Cheng Hao (1032-1085), Cheng Yi (1033-1107), Zhu Xi (1130-1200), Lu Xiang-shan (1139-1193), and Wang Yang-ming (1427-1529). With its focus on metaphysical, epistemological, and ethical philosophical issues, Huang's study presents the historical development of the Neo-Confucian school, an outgrowth of ancient Confucianism, and characterizes its thought, background, and influence. Key concepts—for example, ^Utai-ji (supreme ultimate), ^Uxin (mind), and ^Uren (humanity)—as interpreted by each thinker are discussed in detail. The two major schools that developed during these six centuries are examined as well. Lu-Wang, School of Mind, developed in criticism of Cheng-Zhu, School of Principle. The two schools, despite different approaches toward their philosophical pursuits, were convinced that their common goals, to bring about harmonious relationships between man and the universe and between man and man, could be achieved through different ways of philosophizing. To understand the Chinese mind, it is necessary to understand Neo-Confucianism as a reformation of early Confucianism. Scholars of Eastern religions and philosophy will appreciate the objective interpretations of each thinker's philosophy, for which pertinent passages spoken by each man have been selected and translated by the author from the original Chinese, and the comparisons of the Neo-Confucian philosophies with those of the West. An introduction provides the historical background in which to study the rise of Neo-Confucianism. The study is organized ehronologically and includes a glossary of terms and a bibliography which serves as a helpful guide for further research.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe relations between China and Egypt are good and open, based on common economic and political interests as well as a deep mutual cultural appreciation since both China and Egypt are part of the four great river civilizations of the ancient world (The four civilizations are China and the Yang Cha River, Egypt and the Nile River, the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent and the Ganges River, and Mesopotamia and the Euphrates and Tigres rivers.). Egypt, even during Mao Zedong’s rule in China (1949–1976), enjoyed Chinese support as part of China’s support for the bloc of non-identifying countries, including East African countries such as Sudan, and benefited from the development of China–Africa relations.

Abstract (sommario):
One hindrance to the widespread adoption of mobile agent technology (Johansen et al., 2002) is the lack of security. SAFER, or Secure Agent Fabrication, Evolution and Roaming, is a mobile agent framework that is specially designed for the purpose of electronic commerce (Guan & Yang, 2002, 2004; Yang & Guan, 2000; Zhu, Guan, Yang, & Ko, 2000). By building strong and efficient security mechanisms, SAFER aims to provide a trustworthy framework for mobile agents. Although such an agent transport protocol provides for the secure roaming of agents, there are other areas related to security to be addressed. Agent integrity is one such area crucial to the success of agent technology. The integrity protection for agent code is relatively straightforward. A more complex code integrity scheme to handle code-on-demand is also proposed in Wang, Guan, and Chan (2002). Agent data, however, is dynamic in nature and will change as the agent roams from host to host. Despite the various attempts in the literature (Chionh, Guan, & Yang, 2001), there is no satisfactory solution to the problem so far. Some of the common weaknesses of the current schemes are vulnerabilities to revisit attack and illegal modification (deletion/insertion) of agent data.

Abstract (sommario):
Political oppression and the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar led to an increase in the number of refugees and other immigrants from Myanmar arriving in Japan at the end of the twentieth century. These immigrants from Myanmar have subsequently established several communities, including downtown Tokyo’s ‘Little Yangon’, with a diverse mixture of languages, ethnic groups, and religions. Most of them understand Burmese as a common language, and their social networks have been strengthened by various Burmese media and events in Japan. With the increase in the number of immigrants, refugees, and technical interns from Myanmar, it is necessary to gain a picture of the position of the Burmese language and its sociolinguistic environment in Japan. However, this has attracted little attention from academics thus far. Therefore, this chapter provides a general overview of the development and context of the lives of Burmese-speaking immigrants to Japan from Myanmar as well as their common linguistic usage patterns.

Abstract (sommario):
Vertex models more general than the ice model are possible and often have physical applications. The square lattice admits the general sixteen-vertex model of which the special cases, the eight- and the six-vertex model, are the most relevant and physically interesting, in particular through their connection to the one-dimensional integrable quantum mechanical models and the Bethe ansatz. This chapter introduces power- ful tools to examine vertex models, including the R- and L-matrices to encode the Boltzmann vertex weights and the monodromy and transfer matrices, which encode the integrability of the vertex models (i.e. that transfer matrices of different spectral parameters commute). This integrability is ultimately expressed in the Yang–Baxter relations.

Abstract (sommario):
Agent integrity is one such area crucial to the success of agent technology. The integrity protection for agent code is relatively straightforward. A more complex code integrity scheme to handle code-on-demand is also proposed in Wang et al. (2002).

The relationship between Ava and Pegu was a symbiotic dualism: of time, space and type. Ava was not only a reformulation of something old, and Pegu, the genesis of something new, but as one was located in the agrarian Dry Zone and the other, on the commercial coasts, each was historically, materially, and in terms of general character, distinct. Whereas the Kingdom of Ava was essentially the resurrection of an old kingdom—Pagan writ small—Pegu was a new kingdom composed of new leaders, people, and cultures. Ava was a familiar, Upper Myanmar polity: the same material environment and demographic base, the same economic, social and political institutions, the same language, writing system, cosmology, and culture. Pegu, on the other hand, was a new, independent kingdom of Lower Myanmar, led by newcomers (the Mon speakers) who had migrated from what later became Thailand. Yet, because both Ava and Pegu were built on the same foundations (Pagan), both had certain common elements. They shared virtually the same religion and thought systems; similar social customs, values, and mores; familiar political and administrative principles; a common, even if contested, history; and certainly the same writing system. Whatever the dissimilarities were, they did not produce a binary situation of two irreconcilably antagonistic ethnic entities—Burman and Mon as convention has it—rather, these dissimilarities created a dualism of geo-political and cultural differences whose energy and dynamism came from the tension created precisely by those differences. In fact, Ava and Pegu’s relationship not only epitomized Southeast Asia’s “upstream-downstream” paradigm common throughout much of its history, it continues today in Naypyidaw and Yangon.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>Structural assessment is an important procedure to be done for checking and reviewing the realization of the expected structural performance level. In a normal circumstance, it is common that the bridge is designed with life-safety performance that implies undamaged superstructures and foundations, and damaged substructures. This design philosophy is normally known as “ductile substructure and elastic superstructure” concept. The location of the damages shall be predefined to allow easy access for future repairs after earthquake events. Nowadays, a different design approach is introduced through the use of passive control devices. One of the most common technology for bridges is the seismic isolation system using sliding pendulum isolator bearing as the seismic controlling device. Ahmad Yani Continuous Span Bridge in Becakayu Toll Road Project is designed with pendulum isolator bearings. Through non-linear time history analysis, the structural performance of Ahmad Yani Bridge will be evaluated. It is expected that all the dissipation mechanism occurs in the pendulum bearings, with both superstructure and substructures are still in elastic and essentially elastic conditions.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Originally, City is an enormous and intricate system. However, Cerdá simplified the complicated system into a basic unit, the Manzana, which is the unique code belonging to Barcelona found by Cerdá and based on his analysis to the history of the city, life of its citizens, and some other cases. Being at the core of Barcelona Eixample plan, it gradually formulates the enormous city system of Barcelona and thus paves the way for its future development. Starting with the rules of Invariability, Simplicity and Changeability, the three principles in Yi, this thesis regards the Manzana as a Yin-Yang body, with Yin and Yang power complementing and coexisting with each other. By restoring the codes hidden behind the 550 Manzanas in Barcelona, the thesis tries to explore the common ground between the physical space of the city and the binary life of the people living in it.

Since 2015, we have been addressing a role in this scenario, from a position paper to the creation of the draft “Methodology for VNF Benchmarking Automation” in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Benchmarking Methodology Working Group (BMWG). This paper tells the tale about this draft in BMWG, associated with the perks of developing an open source reference implementation and academic papers, as the means of the old IETF mantra on running code. Abstract (sommario):
Compared with common speed reducers, the cycloidal ones (also known as cycloid drives) cover a wider range of transmission ratios, have a higher load-carrying capacity, are smaller, exhibit a smoother running and a good efficiency. These characteristics make them attractive for industrial applications, especially for robotics applications, machine tools and linear axis positioning in assembly machinery. In this paper, a theoretical and experimental investigation on an innovative cycloidal speed reducer will be presented. The typical cycloid drive has a planet wheel, the profile of which is the inner offset of an epitrochoid, meshing with cylindrical rollers connected to the case. This reducer, on the contrary, has an external ring gear, the transverse profile of which is the external offset of an epitrochoid, and engages with the planet wheel by means of cylindrical rollers. This paper will investigate the structural characteristics and the kinematical principles of this type of reducer. A theoretical approach based on the envelope theory (following Litvin’s approach) will be developed and compared with a development of Blanche and Yang’s approach. Furthermore, a simplified procedure to calculate force distribution on cycloid drive elements, as well as its power losses and theoretical mechanical efficiency will be presented. The effects of design parameters on the values of the forces will be studied, for an optimal design of this type of reducer. The theoretical model will be then tuned using the results of tests on a specific rig. As a result of the experimental tests, the reducer mechanical efficiency dependency on speed and torque will be described. The aim of this work is to perform the fine tuning of a theoretical model in order to predict the operating behavior of the cycloid drive, and to improve its design procedure.

Abstract (sommario):
Co-creation is becoming a more common and essential method to deal with complex systematic problems in the community, a critical issue in social innovation. However, due to the perishability of co-creation, it is challenging to consistently facilitate the bottom-up innovation of participators. Perishability means that the co-creation results cannot be well saved and cannot have sustainable impacts on participators, such as emotional links, social interactions, and real-time talks. Towards this end, we introduce the theory of communication study into the social innovation area. According to the Malezek Mass Communication System Model and the Verkehr Theory, we deconstruct a co-creation event as a social information system and regard the traditional design touchpoints as the media touchpoints which can affect the communication process among participators during the co-creation. By combining the co-creation logic (named the Execution Co-creation Layer) from service design with the communication logic (named the Media Co-creation Layer) from the social media area, we aim to construct a new model named the Experience Media Model (EMM) to optimize the problem. EMM is a top model to help the community co-creation organizers systematically comp the information flow and adjust, delete, or create some media touchpoints to get better and consistent bottom-up innovation results after the co-creation. In addition, EMM was evaluated, verified, and iterated by applying it in a practical community co-creation project named NICE2035 Art Co-Mural, No.169 Fuxin Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai, China, where more than 200 residents were involved offline, and more than 100,000 people were involved online. Moreover, we conducted interviews, comments reviews, and media data analysis to get further feedback and insights from participators. In conclusion, we argue that the EMM can be a method to facilitate consistent bottom-up innovation in community co-creation, and we hope that this article has a specific enlightening value for later researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
Karen (or Kariang or Yang) are a group of heterogeneous ethnic groups that do not share common culture, language, religion, or material characteristics, and who live mostly in the hills bordering the mountainous region between Myanmar and neighboring countries (Fratticcioli 2001; Harriden 2002). Some of these groups have migrated to Thailand’s borders. Given these huge numbers of migrant Karens, there is a paucity of research and understanding of how Karen learners from upland ethnic groups negotiate and construct their identities when they socialize with other lowland learners. This paper explores ways in which Karen learners negotiate and construct their identities through language socialization in the Thai learning context. The study draws on insights from discourse theory and ecological constructionism in order to understand the identity and negotiation process of Karen learners at different levels of identity construction. Multiple semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain deeper understandings of this phenomenon between ethnicity and language socialization. The participants were four Karen learners who were studying in a Thai public university. Findings suggest that Karen learners experience challenges in forming their identity and in negotiating their linguistic capital in learning contexts. The factors influencing these perceptions seemed to emanate from the stakeholders and the international community, which played significant roles in the context of learning. The findings also reflect that Karen learner identity formation and negotiation in language socialization constitutes a dynamic and complex process involving many factors and incidences, discussed in the present study. The analysis presented has implications for immigration, mobility, language, and cultural policy, as well as for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT: After tertiary oil recovery in old oilfields, problems such as high-water output and low recovery efficiency have generally appeared, which is urgently need to be solved by water blocking and profile control measures. However, the current water blocking gel has low strength and poor-temperature resistance and cannot meet the site requirements, and the organic concentration of most polyacrylamide hydrogels is 0.6 wt% ~ 3.0 wt%, which further increases the economic cost of oil exploitation. In this work, organic zirconium is used to cross-link anionic polyacrylamide with large molecular weight and low concentration to form gel. It can not only meet the strength requirements of the water blocking gel, but also reduce the amount of polyacrylamide and save costs. The gel formation quality, the temperature resistance of the gel and the blocking effect were evaluated experimentally. The cross-linking mechanism of the gels was analysed by SEM observation of the microscopic morphology. This paper selects the best formula of organic zirconium cross-linked polyacrylamide, which can meet the requirements of the strength and temperature resistance of the water-blocking gel even at low polymer concentrations, and provides a reference for water-blocking to improve oil recovery. 1. INTERDUCTION As crude oil reservoirs have strong non-homogeneous characteristics, and most oil fields have entered the high water content development period, polymer gel water blocking technology is gradually becoming one of the effective measures to improve the recovery of crude oil can effectively solve the common problems of high water content and low recovery efficiency after three oil recovery in old oil fields (Yang, H. et al, 2012). At present, it is widely recognized that polyacrylamide and other polymers are cross-linked to form a gel system to seal the high-permeability layer, thereby expanding the swept area of injected water, improving mobility ratio, and enhancing oil recovery (Jia, H. et al, 2011; Zhu, D. et al, 2017).

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Accurate identification and extraction of fractures in core scanning electron microscope (SEM) images are particularly important for understanding and evaluating fractures in rocks. At present, most of the fracture extraction methods do not take into account the characteristics of fractures extension trend and edge change, resulting in many noise points and breakpoints in the extracted fractures. In view of the above problems, this paper proposes a new method of core SEM image fracture extraction based on double-side inspection and morphological completion. Double-side inspection fractures extraction grids the image and judges the micro-element containing fracture elements. There are many discontinuities in the preliminary extracted fracture image. The study presents a fractures completion algorithm based on the combination of long-short-term memory neural network (LSTM) and Similarity-matching to achieve rapid completion of the fracture discontinuities. Compared with threshold segmentation, the recall rate and precision rate of the proposed method are greatly improved. This method is the application of digital image processing and machine learning algorithm in rock fracture image processing and has important application value in rock fracture quantitative characterization and digital core establishment. INTRODUCTION Among the proven oil and gas reserves in the world, the reserves of fractured oil and gas reservoirs account for more than 60%. At present, there are many research methods for fractures reservoirs. It is an important direction of current research to extract fractures through core image recognition for analysis. The SEM scan can achieve continuous non-destructive imaging of the core, so the current core fracture extraction is mainly based on the SEM core scan image to extract fractures through image segmentation technology (Zou et al, 2016; Ma et al, 2014). At present, fracture segmentation is mainly based on threshold segmentation to binarize the core image, where the fracture area and non-fracture area show two different colors (Wang et al, 2022; Purswani et al, 2020; Zhang et al, 2017). The level set segmentation algorithm can obtain closed contour curves, so this method is also a common algorithm in image segmentation. Through this algorithm, the approximate contour curves of fractures can be obtained from core SEM images. In view of the shortcomings of the level-set algorithm, many scholars have improved it. The improvement is mainly to improve the accuracy of the segmented contour by combining other algorithms with the algorithm (Yang et al, 2012; Xu and Peng, 2012). The improvement of the image binarization algorithm can also effectively extract fractures. Pixels are divided based on the maximum inter-class variance method so that the maximum variance of different categories can effectively reduce the noise points in the image after fractures extraction (Wang, 2006). Through the Beamlet transform, the core image after threshold segmentation can effectively extract the linear features of fractures from the two-dimensional image, thus improving the accuracy of fractures extraction (Gao and Wang, 2010). With the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, the accuracy of core image segmentation can also be improved with the help of a machine learning algorithm. Effective image segmentation can also be achieved based on BP neural network, but the convergence speed of the BP neural network is slow, so some scholars have made a series of improvements to the BP neural network through genetic algorithm, fuzzy set theory, and other methods (Zhou, 2014; Xiong et al,1999; Yang et al, 2007). The binarization of an image can also be understood as the clustering of image pixels. The pixels in the image are grouped into two categories according to their characteristics. The clustering algorithms such as support vector machine (SVM) and centerless fuzzy clustering have also been used for the binary segmentation of images (Wei et al, 2007; Ma et al, 2013). Combining clustering algorithms with threshold segmentation can effectively improve the extraction accuracy of natural fractures (Fan et al, 2022).

Abstract (sommario):
Group work or cooperative learning is a form of active learning that has potential benefits that extend beyond just being an alternative or improved way of learning course material. For example, Shimazoe and Aldrich (2010) identified six proposed benefits of active learning to students, namely (1) promoting deep learning, (2) helping students earn higher grades, (3) teaching social skills & civic values, (4) teaching higher order thinking skills, (5) promoting personal growth and (6) developing positive attitudes toward autonomous learning. There is evidence for the effectiveness of role-plays both in achieving learning outcomes (Azman, Musa, & Mydin, 2018; Craciun, 2010; Latif, Mumtaz, Mumtaz, & Hussain, 2018; McSharry & Jones, 2000; Yang, Kim, & Noh, 2010), but also in developing desirable graduate attributes such as teamwork, communication and problem solving skills [4]. The importance of such skills is widely touted by employers of science graduates, sometimes more so than discipline-specific knowledge, arguing in favour of the incorporation of role-plays and other forms of cooperative learning into undergraduate science curricula. Role-playing is probably not as widely used in the physical and life sciences as it is in other academic disciplines. In science the most obvious role-play scenarios in which students play the roles of people might be in examining historical figures at the centre of famous scientific discoveries or debates (Odegaard, 2003). In addition, role-plays fit well at the interface between science and other discipline when exploring ethical, legal or commercial implications of scientific discoveries(Chuck, 2011). However, to apply role-play to core topics in science or mathematics the roles that must be played are not those of people but rather of things like particles, forces, elements, atoms, numbers, laws, equations, molecules, cells, organs and so on. The learning scenarios for science-based roleplays in which the characters represented are not people are less obvious, probably explaining why the use of role-plays in science education is less common. Nevertheless, focusing on the life sciences, role-plays in which the characters are organelles in a cell or enzymes involved in fundamental cellular processes like DNA replication, RNA transcription and protein translation have been described for example (Cherif, Siuda, Dianne M. Jedlicka, & Movahedzadeh, 2016; Takemura & Kurabayashi, 2014). The communication of discipline-specific templates and successful models for the application of role-playing in science education is likely to encourage their wider adoption. Here I describe a videoed group role-play assignment that has been developed over a ten-year period of reflective teaching practice. I suggest that this model of videoed group role-plays is a useful cooperative learning format that will allow learners to apply their varied creativity and talents to exploring and explaining diverse scientific topics while simultaneously developing their teamwork skills.
