Abstract (sommario):

This thesis tries to examine aspects and characteristics of writings called 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho (Rhetorical Writing)」 in 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 from a viewpoint of sentence introduction essays. 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is a syntax text which includes basic composition methods, the composition theory, writing’s social roles and significance. This writing regards 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 as playing an important role as the book with sentence introduction as well as the simple letter textbook. And the thesis tries to examine 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 as the text which was influenced by Jeong, Inbo’s sentence theory by analyzing his preface in 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 in detail. For this, the preface by Jeong, Inbo was first examined. The preface shows the sentence theory and letter theory’s directionality pursued by 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 like a completed example. Chapter 1 of 10 chapters of 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is the general introduction like an independent essay about the origin of languages, letters, and writings. Chapter 2 to 4 describe the characteristics of the composition methods to present concrete writing techniques, Chapter 5 to 6 explain the characteristics of the concrete sentence theory, and Chapter 7 to 10 focus on writings’ styles. Like this, it treats the letter theory in earnest. This 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is writing to make readers read Widang Joeng, Inbo’s efforts to establish the systematic composition theory and letter theory as the sentence theory made under his academic and cultural influence. Furthermore, it can be thought this text plays an important role in making the characteristics of 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 which is the contemporary letter textbook the sentence introduction with the characteristics of strengthening sentences in earnest, not staying at the level of the simple teaching material for letters.

Abstract (sommario):

This study used multidimensional analysis to investigate whether English learners writing features vary significantly across their proficiency levels in the continuation writing task. Writings were collected from 30 Chinese high-school English learners, who were divided into three proficiency groups based on their writing scores. Their writing texts were analyzed by using Multidimensional Analysis Tagger (MAT 1.3). The results showed that three groups varied significantly in the dimensions of formality and abstractness of their writings. These two dimensions are related to the proportion of nouns and conjunctions in writings. Writings by higher proficiency students were more formal and abstract because of higher proportions of nouns and conjunctions than those by intermediate and low proficiency students. The results indicate that teachers can improve students writing performance by introducing some formal words and conjunctions to students.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this paper is to discuss effective literacy education methods through assertive writing and persuasive speech performance using constructivist strategies. To this end, speech learning after writing was designed based on the understanding of constructivism. The learning components are pre-teaching activities, learning guidance, learner-led learning, and assessment. According to the course, learning objectives, learner analysis, learning content mini-lecture, feedback, writing, presentation, teacher evaluation, and peer evaluation were planned. The learners performed solution-type argumentative writings, cold-bang-type argumentative writings, argument-type argumentative writings, goal-oriented argumentative writings, and persuasive speeches. Through this process and results, constructivist learning methods could be suggested to literacy education.

ABSTRACTIt is notable to note here that self-efficacy needs to be ingrained strongly within graduate students to show a higher enthusiasm, efforts, and persistence in accomplishing various demanding academic writing projects. Tangibly, there are still many graduate students who lack motivation and confidence when doing academic writings. As a result, their attitudes toward writing turn into negative actions crippling their self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate graduate students’ perceived self-efficacy in academic writings. One research problem was formulated in this study namely, how do English Education Master Students maintain their self-efficacy to accomplish their academic writings? This study employed a mixed-method harnessing classroom survey and interview questions to gather data from English Education Master Students engaging in academic writings, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Findings from this study revealed that graduate students are able to produce more qualified academic writing products when they are motivated continuously by their lecturer. In order to better understand the research and analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s landscape writing and ecological environment problems, his paper discusses the description of environmental landscape in Hawthorne’s writings. This paper analyzes the “social-ecological” environment during the antebellum era through Hawthorne’s literary writings. Comparing Hawthorne’s writings of the landscape within statistics and diagrams, this study argues that the romantic descriptions of natural settings and characters in Hawthorne’s writings reflect the social and ecological environment of antebellum era. Therefore, reads can accurately understand Nathaniel Hawthorne’s living context and the ecological environment problems. This study also argues that Hawthorne’s writings of landscape reflect much more the ecological and environmental problems in his era comparing with other antebellum writers. Understanding Hawthorne’s writing of the environment will also provide a guidance for the contemporary society.

Apart from being a place of worship, mosques also have cultural elements that can be researched, especially writing in and around them. This study uses the concept of landscape linguistics as a basis for explaining the meaning and symbols of religion including the writings on the Baiturrahmah Great Mosque in Denpasar. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning and religious symbols behind the writing surrounding the mosque environment. This study used a qualitative methodology, where the writings about the mosque were recorded with a cellphone camera and analysed one by one. The results obtained from this study are not only the meaning displayed by the Baiturrahmah Grand Mosque, but also the religious symbols scattered in the writings around the mosque. Starting from writing the name of the mosque, writing on the place of ablution, writing on a charity box, a notice board, calligraphy in the room, to writing on sandals. All these writings if examined further turned out to have a variety of functions, namely information, promotions, prohibitions, appeals, decorations in the mosque.

Letters, figures or words are sometimes fraudulently added to a contract or other legal documents after it has been signed or produced. This can drastically change the intent of the document. It is more difficult to detect additions that are skillfully added to a document than erasures. It becomes the task of the document examiner to determine if the addition or alteration was made after the document was executed or these were the part and parcel of the document earlier. The forensic document experts can examine, detect and interpret the evidence of alteration by means of additions/insertions, as well as relative age of writings and spuriousness of the documents even in the absence of samples. Besides examining the different types of forgery involved in the writings/ signatures, the ink of the writings, misalignment between the letters, figures, words as well as lines, crowdedness of the writing, rhythm of the writing1, detection and analysis of indented and other accidental markings in the front as well as back side of the document under observation need to be carefully and thoroughly examined. In this study, the systematic method of identification of fraudulent nature of the document with respect to alteration by means of additions/ insertions/interpolation, as well as relative age of writings are discussed.

The situation of English writing by Chinese college students is a matter difficult to handle, with some being good and some bad. The flexible processing of pragmatic distance in English writings between authors and readers to ensure effective pragmatic communication deserves too much thought. The appropriate use of strategies of pragmatic distance employed in English writings has a direct impact on writing performance. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze how to use relevance theory to interpret strategies of pragmatic distance employed in English writings, and to find out whether there is a certain relationship between the strategic use of pragmatic distance and gender, thus providing a reference for the research to improve English writing proficiency of Chinese college students.

In 1993, cultural critic Nelly Richards published a polemic article called “Does Writing Have a Sex?”. From this text I aim, on the one hand, to discuss the question that gives her article a name by stating that no, writing does not have a sex; it has a gender. On the other hand, I am interested in addressing Richards’ non-separatist perspective, which refers to the consideration of female writing as counter-hegemonic, a fact shared with male writings. For Richards, being male is not decisive in the appraisal of writing. Moreover, she points out that feminism is at risk of becoming a ghetto if it does not include writing from counter-hegemonic males. From my vision, while it is true that there are different counter-hegemonic writings, it is not possible to de-gender writing; much less to put female and male writings in the same territory, whether they are heterosexual or homosexual, and even less, to catalogue their productions under “female writing”.

Jawi writings began to show their role in the Malay Land since the entry of Islam into the archipelago. However, at this time Jawi writings seem to have been marginalized by Rumi or Latin writings. This condition is inversely proportional to what happens when Malay (Jawi writing) reaches a high level in its time. At that time Christian priests had to translate the Bible into Malay so they could spread their religion in Malay lands. Whereas at present, Muslims must transliterate the Qur'an into Latin letters so that Muslims can read it in Malay lands. This fact shows that the Malays have experienced a setback in the intellectual tradition that was once possessed in the form of Jawi writing. This research aims to find out the role of Jawi writings in the past and what must be done to safeguard one of the valuable intellectual traditions of Malay Islam. The results show that currently Jawi writing has become a rare commodity in the Indonesian Malay world. While neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Brunei still retain Jawi writing through their use on street names, buildings and other public facilities. The Indonesian Malay world community is more familiar with Latin writing than Jawi writing. Therefore, systematic efforts are needed to reintroduce and maintain the treasury of Jawi writing to the younger generation in the Indonesian Malay world.

The activity of writing as a coping mechanism during the process of grief is explored. This study is based on questionnaire responses from bereaved persons cared for by Boulder County Hospice's Follow-Up Services Team. Several facets of the writing experience are discussed: forms the writing has taken, whether the writing was spontaneous or structured, difficulties experienced in writing, disclosure of the writings, reactions of others to the writings, perceived helpfulness of the writing experience, and time during the grief process when writing was most helpful. Recognizing certain limitations on the use of writing during bereavement, this article focuses on the potential benefits for bereaved persons and encourages the consideration by caregivers of writing as a valuable coping tool.

Abstract (sommario):

Diplomatic Writings外蕃通書 (also known as 外蕃書翰, which literally means “pappers and ink of diplomacy”) is a collection of diplomatic texts between Tokugawa Bakufu and the representatives of neibouring nations such as Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Those writings were exchanged from the seventeenth to the eighteenth century, during which the Edo period had reached its half and the Trinh and Nguyen families of Vietnam were fighting against each other. The writings were collected and edited by Kondo Juzo 近藤重蔵 (also known as Kondo Morishige 守重) (1771 - 1892), who was a scholar and vassal of Tokugawa Bakufu. Diplomatic Writings consists of 27 volumes, including a volume for the content list. Diplomatic writings with Vietnam were sorted in the section named “An Nam Nation Writings” 安南國書. The collection was composed from 1808 to 1819, presented in traditional Chinese, ancient Japanese, and Katakana. The “An Nam Nation Writings” section consists of writings from Bakufu Tokugawa to Lord Nguyen in the South of Vietnam and Lord Trinh in the North of Vietnam, and vice versa, discussing diplomacy, commerce, and protections for Japanese citizens commercing in Vietnam. This is one in the oldest writing collection about Vietnam-Japan relations. This article introduces and studies the section “An Nam Nation Writings” in Diplomatic Writings.

ChatGPT has drawn rapid interest among linguists and language teachers, with academics and industries rushing to tap into its potential. Yet the pedagogical potential of ChatGPT for L2 English writing remains to be further explored academically. This study aims to examine the effects of ChatGPT, or one of its Chinese versions called infinigoChatIC, in improving the quality of L2 writing and in facilitating the development of L2 proficiency among some postgraduate students learning an English reading and writing course in a prestigious university in Southwest China. Specifically, the main research questions focus on how infinigoChatIC-polished L2 English writings perform in comparison to L2 learner writings, and how the improvement of English writing is reflected in the changes of lexical and syntactic complexity, as evidenced by measured data and its pedagogical significance. A set of 24 English writings are collected as part of regular homework assignments, then this set of English writing is polished by the teacher researcher in the infinigoChatIC dialogue box with the prompt “please correct grammatical errors in the following English text so that it is grammatically accurate.” These two sets of writings are scored in iWrite automatic scoring system and then analyzed in Lu & Ai’s web-interfaced linguistic complexity analyzer. The study finds that infinigoChatIC can effectively improve the quality of L2 English writing, with lexical complexity vastly improved and yet surprisingly overall syntactic complexity slightly reduced. Pedagogical implications are discussed.

This writing highlights relatively the writings of late modernism in literature. It gives an overview of the development of late modernism and writers responded to it. The second half of the 20th century writings created its own genre in the literary field. There is a study to conceptualize and historicize late modernism with greater precision. We can put our attentions to the writings 1930’s, 1940’s and 1950’s. Each of these sections serves a double function. First, they offer close readings of late modernism writings that deal how the society witnessed changes after II World War. Second, it focuses on the aesthetic dimensions of late modernism and the writers who contributed to this through their works. Many poets responded to late modernism and highlighted the features of late modernism in their writings.

The themes found in the writings by authors during the Gilded Age are still prevalent in writings of the twenty-first century. The Gilded Age, a term used to describe a period of economic boom after the American Civil War at the turn of the century, have influenced communication to readers by using the ethos unearthed by writers who were opposed to a particular politician and their policies. Newspaper writing played a crucial role in exposing scandals, the pathos of the American Dream, and the logos or persuasion by using the trials of society. Writing was a powerful tool of communication during the Gilded Age that allowed writers to target events during this era. Newspaper writing was important to communicate prominent issues to the public, as writing upheld ideals to question government and to keep it accountable. However, the Gilded Age writings helped to permanently etch in the minds of readers the importance of themes that were prevalent post-Civil War that impacted the writing and writers of American Literature.

Laxmi Prasad Devkota, celebrated poet as the Mahakavi or Poet the Great wasborn in 1966 BS. Writing in distinct style from the tradition, Devkota has broken the convention in Nepalese writing, both in form and content, though he was in the difficult mode of free expression due to Rana observation over writings and even the discouraging situation on free thinking and creative writing. He has adapted Sanskrit tradition of writing epics, (Mahakavya) and also, he has composed the epic on free verse. He has introduced and applied western Romantic trend of writing poetry. With these new modes, he has introduced new genre and approach in writing poems and other forms of literature. Openness, lucidity and honesty are some of the characteristics of Devkota’s poetic works. His feelings, sensibility and expressions have been blended perfectly and brilliantly with words and meanings that have created an explosion of thoughts and ideas in his writings. We find spontaneous expression in his poems and there is no artificial sense. As a versatile writer, he has composed in all literary genres, pomes, epics, essays, plays and fictions, but he is basically a poet. Having with the knowledge both in eastern Sanskrit literature and western literary traditions, he has combined both traditions in his Nepali writings. With the use of the western and eastern mythical references, he has united the traditions of the both in his writings. This article aims to observe his revisit to the eastern and western mythical references in Mayavini Circe, the epic on free verse.

This paper aims at investigating the problems of coherence in the English writings of Saudi male and female students at Albaha University. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach. A corpus of students’ writings (30 scripts) was analyzed adapting an analytical coherence scale developed in the light of Bamberg’s (1984) holistic coherence scale and approaches and studies that concern with text coherence in English. The findings of the study showed that the overall mean score of the evaluation of coherence in the students’ writings is above average, namely 62.07. The results of the analysis of the study corpus revealed that the problems of coherence in the students’ writings are ascribed to the following: 1) students’ inability to write an idea-focused text substantiated by relevant and supporting details; 2) impact of Arabic rhetorical traditions in marshaling the details in the text; 3) students’ ignorance of the systematic organization of information in the concerned text of writing; 4) students’ failure to correctly and appropriately use conjunctions, references and lexical items that link sentences of the text; 5) students’ low proficiency in writing well-constructed sentences that express clear ideas. The study concluded with some suggestions to the concerned teachers of English writing, hoping that they address the students’ problems in text coherence.

Writing is one of the important skills that should be mastered by the students. Unfortunately, most of the students still have problems in writing especially in writing good sentences. Problems occur when the sentence form is incorrect. This research was intended to describe the tenth grade students’ sentence fallacies in their narrative writingsand explore the gender differences in their writing products based on the sentence fallacies. The sentence fallacies focused on sentence fragments, comma splices, and run-on sentences. There were 14 male students’ writings and 14 female students’ writings investigated in this research. A descriptive analysis was used to describe the students’ sentence fallacies and the percentage of male and female students’ sentence fallacies. Based on the result of the data analysis, it was found that both male and female students made the three kinds of sentence fallacies in their narrative writings. However, the male students made less sentence fallacies in almost all kinds of sentence fallacies, except in comma splice. The male students made more comma splices compared to the female students.

Dakwah (preaching) through writing can make scholars immortal. In addition to preach orally, Muslim scholars in this regard kiai of Islamic boarding school, should also be able to preach through writing. Doing these two methods could be considered as the perfect preaching of kiai. In terms of preaching through writing, kiai not only had to write a book, as classical scholars did. Nowadays, kiai should be able to do preach through mass communication media, such as writing in the magazine. This paper finds out that mostly the papers magazine of kiai are in accordance with the capacity of knowledge and interests for its readers (Santri-santriwati). Surely, there are some reasons for delight readers on the writings of kiai in magazines. One of them was due to see capacity knowledge of kiai. As for their internal motivations, can add their new knowledge by reading the writings of kiai in magazines. Even, it turns out that the writings of kiai also give influence to its readers, such as can motivate them to become authors.

This research aims to find out (simple and multiple with two) thematic progression pattern in fifth semester students’ academic writing. It elaborates how the students organize the ideas in their writing through the organization of the theme and rheme. To find out the pattern, the theory of thematic progression patterns proposed by Bloor and Bloor (2004) was applied. Then, descriptive qualitative and library research methods are applied in this research. The data in this research are 20 pieces of fifth semester students’ academic writings. The result of the research shows that there are four types of simple thematic progression pattern and seven types of multiple with two thematic progression pattern found in students’ academic writings. Then, it can be concluded that thematic progression pattern in students’ academic writings, to some extent, are various.

Bharathi was a great personality who worked in many fields of writing. Bharathi's writings such as poems, stories, articles, journalism, and translation are widely studied today, and the reason why we celebrate a separate field of study called Bharatiology is the Bharti researchers who crossed the border of Tamil Nadu, crossed the border of India, and went to the world level to discover Bharathi's writings and make them available to us. Although Bharathi's life span was very short, research history tells us that there are still many unknown writings by Bharathi till this moment when his centennial is being celebrated. This community that celebrates Bharathi's writings does not pay attention to the personalities who seek out, publish, and document them. After Bharti's death, the search and recordings started by his wife Chellammal Bharti and younger brother C. Viswanathan continue till date. Among them, he continued to search for Bharathi's writings worldwide and found Bharathi's writings in Bharathi's commentaries, Vijaya magazines, and Hindu magazines, and contributed greatly to Bharatiology. The purpose of this article is to explain A R Venkatachalapathi's contributions to Bharatiology.

Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) software has gained popularity in the field of writing related research. Most studies focused on perception and acceptance of AWEs and improvements in writing. However, this study was carried out based on the technicality of the writing which are often discussed as readability. The objectives of the study are to investigate the improvement in writing and to compare the results between the control and the experimental groups. The study employed a descriptive research design with two groups (control (n=49) and experimental n=72)) undergoing two tests (pre-test and post-test). The gap between these tests was 10 weeks where the control group went on the traditional teaching and learning method while the experimental group were exposed and trained to use AWE. Using the Flesch Reading Ease Scale and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, the readability of the writings as well as the grade level required to understand the writings were tested. The findings revealed that the improvement of the readability in the experimental group fared slightly less compared to the control group. However, it is still safe to conclude that AWE does help to improve writings.

Currently, African American girls are being depicted as overly sexual, violent, or confrontational, are judged by physical features, or are invisible across mainstream media and within school classrooms. Few investigations have explored how they respond to and interpret such imposed representations. Nor, for the most part, have studies examined how girls represent themselves among a society of others pathologizing and defining who they are. This inquiry investigated self-representations in the writings of eight African American adolescent girls ages 12–17 who participated in a historically grounded literacy collaborative. Coupling sociohistorical and critical sociocultural theories, I organized and analyzed their writings through open, axial, and selective coding. Findings show that the girls wrote across platforms similar to those African American women have addressed historically, which included writing to represent self, writing to resist or counter ascribed representations, and writing toward social change. The girls wrote multiple and complex representations, which included ethnic, gender, intellectual, kinship,—sexual, individual, and community representations. These findings suggest their writings served as hybrid spaces for the girls to explore, make sense of, resist, and express different manifestations of self. The representations the girls created in their writings did not fall into static notions of culture or identity. Instead, their self-representations were socially constructed and were responsive to their lives. This study extends the extant research by offering wider views of representations from the girls’ voices, as well as a broadened historical lens to view their reading and writing with implications for how English language arts educators can reconceptualize the roles of writing in classrooms.

AbstractThis exploratory study examined the writings of a small group of learners enrolled in intermediate CFL classes at two U.S. universities and attempted to profile these learners’ writing development over five months. It collected data through both in-class timed essays and out-of-class writing assignments and analyzed them in terms of overall rating and a variety of writing measures (i.e., fluency, accuracy, complexity, content, and organization). The results showed negligible improvement in these learners’ overall writing proficiency at the end of the observation period and revealed a non-linear trend of development of their writing competence over time. In addition, the analysis of the learners’ writing profile as well as the errors committed in their writings provided new insights into the promotion of L2 writing skills in CFL classrooms.

In measuring learners’ productivity in writing and speaking, there is a formulation known as syntactic and lexical complexity. This study investigates whether there is a difference in syntactic and lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings or not. This study is quantitative research which employ Web-Based Lexical Complexity Analyser and Web-Based Syntactic Complexity Analyser in order to measure data. The current study results reveal that the p-value of three sub-components of lexical complexity is lower than 0.05 (LD=0.000, LS=0.036, and LV=0.000), which means a significant difference in lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings. A similar result showed in syntactic complexity where four of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language writings showed value <0.05. The p-value of comparing four indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, DC/C, CP/C, and C/S is 0.006, 0.000, 0.038, and 0.002, respectively. However, the fifth indice, MLC (mean length of clause) shows a p-value >0.05, which means no significant difference between MLC of English writings and Indonesian writings. The study concluded that the students produce more lexical and syntactic complexity in their English writings than in their Indonesian writings.

AbstractThe article proposes a model for linguistic analysis of scientific thought-styles, combining quantitative and qualitative analyses in the variationist frame and focusing on writings of the scholastic period. The first part of the article considers factors that led to the vernacularisation of scientific writings in fifteenth-century England and the sources, underlying traditions, and audiences of these writings. The empirical part focuses on two features typical of scholasticism: references to authorities and the use of prescriptive phrases. The results show statistical differences between varieties of writing. A close semantic analysis reveals a pattern which is related to the underlying layers of traditon and to the sociohistorical background of the texts. The material comes from a computer-readable Corpus of Early English Medical Writing 1375-1750, which the authors are compiling at the University of Helsinki.

This study investigated the influence of acquired L1 writing skills on exophonic writings of students ( N = 147) from diverse majors, who visited an English writing center for assistance. Affective differences revealed students with L1 writing tutelage (WL1) had lower avoidance behavior and higher extrinsic motivation and writing self-efficacy. Self-perceived L2 writing ability was found to be a principal factor for WL1. Writing self-efficacy appeared essential for students without L1 writing tutelage (WOL1). Regression analysis found learner self-beliefs and somatic anxiety (negative) influenced self-perceived L2 writing ability for WL1, and holistic self-beliefs on English writing (HSE) and cognitive ability (negative) for WOL1. Acquired L1 writing skills did not tangibly influence L2 performance. No large impact factors were found for WL1, but HSE and attitudes & reaction (negative) impacted WOL1 performance. Implications such as performance may not be a main concern among exophonic writers, and the need for English writing centers in non-L1 (English) countries are discussed.

The aim of this article is to address the recently renewed debate pertaining to esotericism, secret messages encoded within writings from antiquity, especially in the writings of Plato. The question of esotericism has assumed a prominent role within debates concerning the history of political thought. Ever since Leo Strauss offered his suspicion that there were secrets ‘buried in the writings of the rhetoricians of antiquity’, the idea that philosophers deliberately concealed their true beliefs in a way that few could detect has been fiercely debated. More recently, the research of J.B. Kennedy has made international headlines for discovering a musical pattern embedded within Platonic writings, a pattern that Kennedy insists is evidence of Plato’s Pythagorean allegiance. The theses proffered by Strauss and Kennedy are empty doctrines of esotericism, or empty esotericisms. These doctrines insinuate the presence of secret or coded writing within Platonic dialogues but reveal no actual secret. These theses of esotericism falsely represent Plato as hyper-cryptic.Without actually providing substantive content, these notions of esotericism compel the reader to merely negate the exoteric writings of Plato, which actually render his already heterodox writings as commonplace and orthodox.
