Abstract (sommario):
This thesis tries to examine aspects and characteristics of writings called 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho (Rhetorical Writing)」 in 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 from a viewpoint of sentence introduction essays. 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is a syntax text which includes basic composition methods, the composition theory, writing’s social roles and significance. This writing regards 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 as playing an important role as the book with sentence introduction as well as the simple letter textbook. And the thesis tries to examine 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 as the text which was influenced by Jeong, Inbo’s sentence theory by analyzing his preface in 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 in detail. For this, the preface by Jeong, Inbo was first examined. The preface shows the sentence theory and letter theory’s directionality pursued by 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 like a completed example. Chapter 1 of 10 chapters of 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is the general introduction like an independent essay about the origin of languages, letters, and writings. Chapter 2 to 4 describe the characteristics of the composition methods to present concrete writing techniques, Chapter 5 to 6 explain the characteristics of the concrete sentence theory, and Chapter 7 to 10 focus on writings’ styles. Like this, it treats the letter theory in earnest. This 「Seohanmunganghwaryakcho」 is writing to make readers read Widang Joeng, Inbo’s efforts to establish the systematic composition theory and letter theory as the sentence theory made under his academic and cultural influence. Furthermore, it can be thought this text plays an important role in making the characteristics of 『Shincheminun Contemporary Writings Letter Writing Style』 which is the contemporary letter textbook the sentence introduction with the characteristics of strengthening sentences in earnest, not staying at the level of the simple teaching material for letters.

Abstract (sommario):
This study used multidimensional analysis to investigate whether English learners writing features vary significantly across their proficiency levels in the continuation writing task. Writings were collected from 30 Chinese high-school English learners, who were divided into three proficiency groups based on their writing scores. Their writing texts were analyzed by using Multidimensional Analysis Tagger (MAT 1.3). The results showed that three groups varied significantly in the dimensions of formality and abstractness of their writings. These two dimensions are related to the proportion of nouns and conjunctions in writings. Writings by higher proficiency students were more formal and abstract because of higher proportions of nouns and conjunctions than those by intermediate and low proficiency students. The results indicate that teachers can improve students writing performance by introducing some formal words and conjunctions to students.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this paper is to discuss effective literacy education methods through assertive writing and persuasive speech performance using constructivist strategies. To this end, speech learning after writing was designed based on the understanding of constructivism. The learning components are pre-teaching activities, learning guidance, learner-led learning, and assessment. According to the course, learning objectives, learner analysis, learning content mini-lecture, feedback, writing, presentation, teacher evaluation, and peer evaluation were planned. The learners performed solution-type argumentative writings, cold-bang-type argumentative writings, argument-type argumentative writings, goal-oriented argumentative writings, and persuasive speeches. Through this process and results, constructivist learning methods could be suggested to literacy education.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTIt is notable to note here that self-efficacy needs to be ingrained strongly within graduate students to show a higher enthusiasm, efforts, and persistence in accomplishing various demanding academic writing projects. Tangibly, there are still many graduate students who lack motivation and confidence when doing academic writings. As a result, their attitudes toward writing turn into negative actions crippling their self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate graduate students’ perceived self-efficacy in academic writings. One research problem was formulated in this study namely, how do English Education Master Students maintain their self-efficacy to accomplish their academic writings? This study employed a mixed-method harnessing classroom survey and interview questions to gather data from English Education Master Students engaging in academic writings, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Findings from this study revealed that graduate students are able to produce more qualified academic writing products when they are motivated continuously by their lecturer. Abstract (sommario):
In order to better understand the research and analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s landscape writing and ecological environment problems, his paper discusses the description of environmental landscape in Hawthorne’s writings. This paper analyzes the “social-ecological” environment during the antebellum era through Hawthorne’s literary writings. Comparing Hawthorne’s writings of the landscape within statistics and diagrams, this study argues that the romantic descriptions of natural settings and characters in Hawthorne’s writings reflect the social and ecological environment of antebellum era. Therefore, reads can accurately understand Nathaniel Hawthorne’s living context and the ecological environment problems. This study also argues that Hawthorne’s writings of landscape reflect much more the ecological and environmental problems in his era comparing with other antebellum writers. Understanding Hawthorne’s writing of the environment will also provide a guidance for the contemporary society.

Abstract (sommario):
Apart from being a place of worship, mosques also have cultural elements that can be researched, especially writing in and around them. This study uses the concept of landscape linguistics as a basis for explaining the meaning and symbols of religion including the writings on the Baiturrahmah Great Mosque in Denpasar. The purpose of this study was to determine the meaning and religious symbols behind the writing surrounding the mosque environment. This study used a qualitative methodology, where the writings about the mosque were recorded with a cellphone camera and analysed one by one. The results obtained from this study are not only the meaning displayed by the Baiturrahmah Grand Mosque, but also the religious symbols scattered in the writings around the mosque. Starting from writing the name of the mosque, writing on the place of ablution, writing on a charity box, a notice board, calligraphy in the room, to writing on sandals. All these writings if examined further turned out to have a variety of functions, namely information, promotions, prohibitions, appeals, decorations in the mosque.

Allsopp, Richard David. "Acts of writing : writings on contemporary performance". Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2671.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The work published between 1991-2000 and presented here forms a continuing meditation on, and exploration of contemporary performance. The term 'contemporary performance' is used to refer to practices and discourses in the performance arts that have occurred over the last decade. There Is a particular emphasis on those unstable, hybrid and interdisciplinary areas of performance (including performance art, installation, 'new' dance, 'experimental' theatre, 'live' art) which resist easy definition or categorisation, and which may be further characterised as postmodern in the sense of a reflexive, contextualised and knowingly problematic practice. More specifically the work builds a sustained thesis on contemporary practice and addresses in a number ways some of the central Issues surrounding the placing and practice of performance. It focuses on relationships between performance, textuality, the body, and spatiality; as well as on Issues of context, framing and the place of performance in contemporary culture. The work engages with a number key terms applied to contemporary performance Including ephemerality, displacement, equivalence and ecology, which contribute to the central thesis that contemporary performance Is an unsettled yet always contextualised practice which resists fixities and holds itself between a condition of fragmentation and integration. Contemporary performance is considered from a number of points of view: " as performance: where the events and relationships which constitute performance can be documented and mapped; " as contextuaiised practice: where the conditions that enable or disable performance can be identified; " as process : where the dynamics and media of performance can be situated; " as site : where the frames, surfaces and boundaries of performance can be examined; 7 Acts of Writing - Ric Allsopp (July zooo) Abstract " as ecology: where the Internal and external Interdependencies of performance can be Identified; " as a problematic: where the terms and assumptions that constitute a reading of performance can be Identified and analysed. Two key ideas inform the thesis that emerges from the work: firstly the recognition of an ethical stance towards performance; and secondly the search for a methodology which can disclose the dynamics of performance. The'acts of writing' are seen as an active as well as reflective methodology - an engagement with the event of performance understood as a located, contextualised practice. The published work presented here sets out some of the underlying conditions and methodologies from which my work in the field of contemporary performance proceeds. As a thesis It provides sustained evidence of a 'multiple practice' - that is a set of practices and engagements in the field of research that explore what might be termed the 'ecology' of contemporary performance from various positions. This multiple practice Is a way of locating the work and of attempting to realise an ethical stance towards performance. The recognition that the conditions of contemporary performance depend on an Interdependency of contexts and that performance situates Itself as an unstable catalyst that oscillates between these contexts has enabled me to locate my research into contemporary performance In the variety of ways evidenced by the published output collected here.

Hall, John. "Writings, readings and not writing : poems, prose fiction and essays". Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2469.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This submission of published work consists of a number of different modes of writing that interrelate as the concerns of a poet, essayist and teacher. There are twenty-seven separate publications, presented under six categories headings: (A) poems, including prose-poems, written for the page; (B) prose-fiction, represented through a single work; (C) visual poems; (D) enquiries into aspects of a general poetics, including questions about 'situatedness' or 'implicatedness', genres of discourse and their related modalities, poetics and grammar, and a poetics of reading; (E) critical and celebratory readings, mostly of contemporary poets and poems; (F) meditations on institutionalised divisions and modalities of knowledge and practice and their implications for arts pedagogy. These six categories are intended to open out on to each other, to constitute an exploration of writing and reading that is always more than the sum of its parts. With the exception of one article published in 1992 all work was published- or will have been - between 1996 and 2005, a period that coincides with the consolidation and development of a field of study and practice at Dartington College of Arts named Performance Writing. The poems and prose fiction exemplify specific practices within this field and the articles are attempts to develop theoretical and critical instruments within it, especially as they apply to poetry. The articles move between close readings of poetic texts and broad enquiries into reading, writing and the operation of texts within their social, spatial and temporal contexts, such as domestic settings or bereavements. Three articles address 'grammar for performance writers'; three others focus on reading and its relation to knowledge, form and setting; another three, including a review, are enquiries into discipline and interdisciplinarity.

Cull, Stephanie Yolanda McLellan. "Implications of suicide writings". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2018. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/8332/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examined the role of suicide notes as left by the victims of suicide. Suicide note analysis is arguably one of the most robust methodologies in the study of suicide and its prevention. Only a fraction of suicide victims leave a note, however. Although homogeneity has largely been assumed between note writers and non-writers, this assumption was initially made with little if any supporting evidence. This thesis therefore aimed to investigate whether note writers are representative of all suicide victims. A systematic review of existing literature which statistically compared note writers to non-writers was performed. Roughly half of the identified citations reported significant differences between note writers and non-writers; the remainder reported no significant differences. A critique of the Suicide Intent Scale was also presented. The scale’s psychometric properties, strengths, limitations, and contributions to research and clinical practice were evaluated. The thesis also empirically investigated the assumed homogeneity between note writers and non-writers by performing a comparative study using a previously untested sample of Canadian suicide victims. It was concluded that there were no significant differences between note writers and non-writers. Cultural considerations were made. The limitations of this study and implications for future research were discussed.

Avramidis, Konstantinos. "Atlas of Athenian inscriptions : a book of drawings of writings and writings on drawings". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29638.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis proposes a critical exchange between architecture and graffiti. Graffiti in Athens plays a key role in the expression of Greek tensions making this city an ideal place for developing such an exchange. The author acts in a three-fold manner in this research: as architectural designer, one with an impulse to survey by drawing and capable of grasping the matrix of the surfaces upon which graffiti finds an expression; as graffiti writer, somebody with some practical experience as graffitist hence partially equipped to decode the graffiti matrix placed on any given architectural matrix; and as writer on graffiti, who is interested in bringing together and working between the architectural and graffiti matrices to reveal their convergences, deviations and interdependences, and, in so doing, expose the hidden spatiality of graffiti writing. Stemming from this peculiar triple positioning, this book promotes a new situating of Athenian inscriptions. The thesis is presented as an Atlas of Athenian Inscriptions, a book of drawings of writings and writings on drawings. The Atlas offers, in both drawn and written form, a close study of four situations in which graffiti has been recorded. The thesis regards a recent significant graffiti Exhibition – in which the author is actively implicated by being invited into it as a graffiti writer and writer on graffiti – as a starting point, as its situation zero. By de-situating graffiti from its original urban and political context whilst placing it onto the gallery surfaces, this thesis argues that the Exhibition undermines graffiti’s critical potency and has transformed graffiti into an aesthetic object. However, perhaps paradoxically, presenting graffiti as an empty gesture, the Exhibition nonetheless raises questions concerning the situating role of graffiti. By including it in the Atlas together with the following more overt surface ruptures in political edifices, the Exhibition is framed as an equally political situation. The other three situations, all in Athens’ city centre, reflect three important periods in local political history and are emblematic in that they are the epicentres of historical ruptures during which they are extensively graffitied: the former Nazi Detention Centre which operates during the Axis occupation (1941-1944); the Athens Polytechnic that plays a pivotal role in the student uprising against the Greek Military Junta (1967-1974); and the Bank of Greece HQ building which is a site of recurring political expression in contemporary crisis (2010-2015). The Atlas indexes graffiti and related information from the city of Athens, the systematic organisation of which creates different graffiti-related matrices allowing us to make sense of, navigate in and reconstruct the Athenian graffiti landscape through characteristic surface environments. By placing different political situations in the same set with the Exhibition, the thesis aims to give critical voice to how graffiti is perceived. By resituating (graffiti) images, the Atlas restores broken and creates new links between them and their surfaces whilst revealing not only the spatiality of graffiti in Athens but also the spatiality of architecture of Athens as a recurring tension between the matrices of dissensus and consensus. The thesis deconstructs the mythology that architecture represents consensus and graffiti dissensus, since each is embedded in the other. Ultimately, by carefully considering graffiti’s situating character and graphic articulation, this research promotes rupture to the smoothing of its political asperity attempted by architecture, institutions and those writing on graffiti that seek to restrain it.

Abstract (sommario):
Students can be stimulated to become active learners using a tool for active writing. In our university we developed such a tool: POLARIS. Active writings of students about statistical concepts are valuable for the students and the teacher. In their writings students show their understanding of statistical topics. The problem then is how to interpret the writings of students in relation to their proficiency in statistics. Advances in cognitive psychology have extended our understanding of students’ learning and broadened the range of performances that can be used to acquire evidence about the developing abilities of the students. Furthermore advanced technology has made it possible to capture complex performances of students in assessment settings. In this paper the advances in both domains will be explored in order to propose a system to monitor and diagnose students’ on going learning.

Jin, Xin. "Making with the Past: Bricolages in Wang Shu’s Design Writings and Built Projects". In The 38th Annual Conference of the Society of Architectural Historians Australia and New Zealand. online: SAHANZ, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55939/a4002phgul.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study explores how design research writing can engage with historical reference in a radical way. In the 2002 essay “Shijian Tingzhi de Chengshi” (“City Froze in Time”), based on Chapter 2 of his 2000 PhD thesis, Xugou Chengshi (Fictionalising City), the Chinese architect Wang Shu proposes reinterpreting the traditional Chinese architecture and city through the anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss’s notion of “bricolage”, which is defined as making do with available objects. Bricolage is informative for understanding Wang’s design undertakings, which involve skilful adaptations of vernacular building types and construction techniques in new urban projects. Nevertheless, its fundamental role in shaping Wang’s design writings is yet to be fully understood. In his design writings, Wang employs a specific quotation method whereby words and paragraphs from other writers’ preexisting works are reused and woven into new textual compositions. Through formal analysis of “City Froze in Time” and comparisons of compositional patterns between the essay and Wang’s built projects, mainly the Xiangshan Campus of the China Academy of Art, Phase II, Hangzhou (2007) and the Ningbo History Museum, Ningbo (2008), this piece explores three issues. First, it demonstrates how textual fragments found in the past and uttered by others undergo bricolage in Wang’s essay. Second, it foregrounds the intention behind Wang’s chosen writing strategy and investigates broader critical issues, such as authorship and the past–present nonlinear order associated with Wang’s strategy. Third, it expresses how historical materials – understanding “materials” in an inclusive sense – are treated in comparable ways in Wang’s written and built works. By examining Wang’s case, this paper highlights a radical case of contemporary architectural research writing in which an attempt is made to demolish the boundary between theory and design by extending the make-do logic of design into the field of design reflection.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of multimedia as a teaching aid could motivate students in learning and improve their writing skills. The objectives of the study are to assess the impact of audio-visual and audio materials in the lesson on second language learners’ writing skills and to analyse errors in the writings. Forty Engineering undergraduates in their first term at CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) B1 level in proficiency were randomly divided into two comparison groups: Audio-visual Group and Audio Group; to teach them to write a brief description of an industrial process using Audio-visual and Audio materials. The marks of the immediate and post-tests were analysed using independent sample t-test whereas errors in their writings were categorized based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The findings depicted that both Audio-visual and Audio materials have contributed to writing effective process descriptions. While the mean of the Audio group was numerically higher than that of the Audio-visual group in both immediate and posttests, the independent sample t-test confirmed that the difference was not statistically significant. Neither of the modes has been demonstrated superior to the other. Moreover, error analysis based on Surface Structure Taxonomy depicted that over 50% of errors committed by students in both groups were errors of Misformation. Further, second, third and the fourth frequent number of errors were found in the Omission category, Misordering Category, and Addition category respectively for both groups. Therefore, a mixture of Audio-visual and Audio materials could be recommended in writing tasks pertaining to process descriptions. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: As a major figure of international modernism, Le Corbusier’s work has been subject to extensive critique and review both during his lifetime and since, to the extent that he has become the world’s most studied 20th century architect. While numerous attempts have been made to assess Le Corbusier’s works and ideas in their meaning and influence, little attention has been given to understanding the phenomena of critical writing and research that continues to surround the architect. Drawing upon research by the authors in preparing a 4-volume anthology of writings on Le Corbusier’s work for a major British publisher in 2016, the paper will trace critical reaction to the architect’s practice through a survey investigation of research and writing produced mainly in English from the 1920s to the present. The paper will give a chronological account of the issues, ideas and approaches that have emerged in critical writings on Le Corbusier and his architecture, reporting on the historiographic questions that have presented themselves in undertaking such a large-scale survey work. Reviewing the work of well-known critics the survey has also sought out lesser-known voices whose presence reflects Le Corbusier’s impact around the world, providing new interpretations through fresh perspectives on his work. Keywords: Architectural criticism; Architectural historiography; 20th century architecture, Le Corbusier. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/LC2015.2015.712

Abstract (sommario):
Reşat Nuri Güntekin, one of the leading writers of Turkish literature in the Republican Period, contributed to Turkish literature with novels, stories, plays, travel writings and articles. The writer, who lived between 1889-1956, served as a teacher, inspector, deputy and French National Education Attaché and a member of the Unesco board of directors. Continuing his literary activities such as Diken, Kelebek, Güleryüz, İnci, Akbaba, Büyük Mecmua, Yedigün, Zaman, Ulus, Vakit, Memleket in magazines and newspapers, the author publishes his novels and stories, as well as criticism and travel articles. Güntekin's writings, which included his observations during the years he was an inspector in Anatolia, were published in 1936 under the name Anadolu Notes. Since 1947, Reşat Nuri Güntekin began to publish his impressions in Paris, where he went on duty, in a series in his own newspaper, Memleket. This series consists of 15 writings under the heading Passenger Notes and Passenger Book. Güntekin, who tells about the troubles he experienced during the journey in the first series, writes his impressions of Paris under the heading of the Passenger Book. These writings, which started on May 14, 1947 and ended on June 29, 1947, are 11 in number. In these writings, taxis and porters in Paris, subways, trade and black market in the subway, food and beverage issues in Paris, restaurants are emphasized. The writings, in which sections from the daily life of Paris and the hustle and bustle of people are conveyed, are important in that they contain the observations of a Turkish writer about Paris life in the 1940s. These articles written by Reşat Nuri Güntekin in series in the Memleket newspaper have not been published in a book before and have not been talked about much. In this paper, the content of Reşat Nuri Güntekin's writings about his travel to Paris and his impressions during his stay will be emphasized.

Le Maux, Laurent. Bagehot for Central Bankers. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, febbraio 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp147.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Walter Bagehot (1873) published his famous book, Lombard Street, almost 150 years ago. The adage “lending freely against good collateral at a penalty rate” is associated with his name and his book has always been set on a pedestal and is still considered as the leading reference on the role of lender of last resort. Nonetheless, without a clear understanding of the theoretical grounds and the institutional features of the British banking system, any interpretation of Bagehot’s writings remains vague if not misleading—which is worrisome if they are supposed to provide a guideline for policy makers. The purpose of the present paper is to determine whether Bagehot’s recommendation remains relevant for modern central bankers or whether it was indigenous to the monetary and banking architecture of Victorian times.

Abstract (sommario):
The article substantiates the necessity to develop training methods of computer simulation of neural networks in the spreadsheet environment. The systematic review of their application to simulating artificial neural networks is performed. The authors distinguish basic approaches to solving the problem of network computer simulation training in the spreadsheet environment, joint application of spreadsheets and tools of neural network simulation, application of third-party add-ins to spreadsheets, development of macros using the embedded languages of spreadsheets; use of standard spreadsheet add-ins for non-linear optimization, creation of neural networks in the spreadsheet environment without add-ins and macros. After analyzing a collection of writings of 1890-1950, the research determines the role of the scientific journal “Bulletin of Mathematical Biophysics”, its founder Nicolas Rashevsky and the scientific community around the journal in creating and developing models and methods of computational neuroscience. There are identified psychophysical basics of creating neural networks, mathematical foundations of neural computing and methods of neuroengineering (image recognition, in particular). The role of Walter Pitts in combining the descriptive and quantitative theories of training is discussed. It is shown that to acquire neural simulation competences in the spreadsheet environment, one should master the models based on the historical and genetic approach. It is indicated that there are three groups of models, which are promising in terms of developing corresponding methods – the continuous two-factor model of Rashevsky, the discrete model of McCulloch and Pitts, and the discrete-continuous models of Householder and Landahl.
