Abstract The paper presents a practical example of improving quality and occupational safety on automated casting lines. Working conditions on the line of box moulding with horizontal mould split were analysed due to low degree of automation at the stage of cores or filters installation as well as spheroidizing mortar dosing. A simulation analysis was carried out, which was related to the grounds of introducing an automatic mortar dispenser to the mould. To carry out the research, a simulation model of a line in universal Arena software for modelling and simulation of manufacturing systems by Rockwell Software Inc. was created. A simulation experiment was carried out on a model in order to determine basic parameters of the working system. Organization and working conditions in other sections of the line were also analysed, paying particular attention to quality, ergonomics and occupational safety. Ergonomics analysis was carried out on manual cores installation workplace and filters installation workplace, and changes to these workplaces were suggested in order to eliminate actions being unnecessary and onerous for employees.

Measurements of working conditions and assessment of workplace and workplace risk have been carried out by exploring, identifying, recording and analyzing any workplace in a riskiness case. With Application Software, all workplaces in which the measurements were performed are processed.

The objectives of this study were to assess the state of Kentucky’s workplace health promotion and occupational safety and health programs, to ensure the ability to comprehend any possible trends over the past six years in the state’s progress in offering workplace health promotion and health protection programs, to compare the results of this survey with the 2013 Kentucky state-wide assessment, and to identify gaps in Kentucky’s workplace health promotion and occupational safety and health based on Total Worker Health® (TWH) concepts. Using Qualtrics research software, the Workplace Health in America assessment was sent to companies located in Kentucky and having 10 or more employees. Participants were identified using Dun and Bradstreet’s Hoover’s database. The results showed that, as with the 2013 survey, larger workplaces significantly were more likely to offer workplace health promotion programs than smaller companies (X2 = 24.30; p < 0.001). However, more companies (78%) reported offering programs compared to the 2013 assessment (49%). Given the results of the current study as compared to the statewide assessment conducted in 2013, Kentucky’s WHP is moving in a positive direction; yet, there is still much to be done. There remains a strong need to provide cost-effective and accessible resources for all elements of TWH to small workplaces.

The optimal location of workplaces plays an important role in the structure of occupational safety. The design of the workspace should ensure the optimal distribution of functions between person and machine in order to create safe working conditions, reduce the severity of work and the level of production injuries. Most often, workplace planning is carried out manually, by simple calculation, and then the rationality of workplace planning is evaluated, based on statistics of industrial accidents and occupational diseases, as well as indicators of labor productivity, for example, the ratio of compliance with norms. To solve the problem of optimal placement in the work mathematical models are built that can take into account various regulatory restrictions and are simple for further software implementation. It is proposed to choose the theory of φ-functions as a basis, which can be characterized as measures of proximity of objects. Thus, the set task of optimal placement of workplaces is reduced to the task of mathematical programming. The objective function determines the criterion of optimality – the minimization of the area or perimeter that will be occupied by the objects. This formulation of the problem is relevant because the use of the smallest production area, taking into account safety requirements, is an economic condition for effective production management. The constraint on the relative location of workplaces is set using φ-functions, which defines the decision domain. That, when formalizing restrictions, you can take into account all regulatory safety distances between workplaces, equipment, walls, etc. Thus, the work explores an approach that will allow automatic planning of the placement of a large number of technological objects, workplaces in accordance with occupational safety standards. Use of the software application, which can be implemented on the basis of the φ-functions apparatus, will significantly reduce the time of workplaces planning and increase its efficiency.

In today's demanding working conditions, it is of considerable importance for employees to feel safe and happy in their workplaces in terms of their performance. Since employees spend a significant portion of their time in the workplace, the encouragement and development of personal relationships among colleagues and the establishment of communication related to work contribute to the emergence of workplace friendships. These friendships also lead to employees receiving support, feeling relaxed, and experiencing a sense of security. Employees who freely express their ideas in the workplace are more comfortable in implementing their creative ideas. This sense of confidence they feel is also reflected in their psychology as "safety." Therefore, through the workplace friendships they establish, employees can feel psychologically secure. As a result, their performance, especially in terms of creativity, improves. The aim of this study is to determine the mediating role of psychological comfort in the impact of workplace friendships on employee creativity in organizations. To achieve this goal, data was collected through a survey technique from 500 full-time white-collar employees working in companies operating in the furniture sector in Kayseri. The surveys were conducted through face-to-face interviews, and incomplete responses were eliminated, resulting in a total of 428 valid survey responses. Firstly, Cronbach Alpha values were calculated and confirmatory factor analysis was applied to assess the validity and reliability of the collected data. Additionally, skewness and kurtosis values were examined to determine whether the data followed a normal distribution. IBM SPSS, IBM AMOS, and PROCESS 3.2 software programs were utilized for data analysis. NBased on the findings, it has been revealed that psychological comfort plays a partial mediating role in the impact of workplace friendships on creativity. In this context, it has been concluded that workplace friendships not only support creativity but also serve as a mediator in enhancing psychological comfort.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address a deficiency in the literature by exploring the impact of negative workplace safety announcements on firm performance. The authors analyze the issue from a corporate social responsibility perspective and explore ways supply chain managers can contribute to improve firm performance through the development of safe working environments. Design/methodology/approach Utilizing a sample of 227 negative workplace safety announcements, this paper explores the implications of negative workplace safety announcements on the stock price of a firm using event study methodology. Findings The authors find that negative workplace announcements are associated with an abnormal decrease in shareholder value. Furthermore, the authors find evidence that negative workplace safety announcements have a more pronounced negative effect on firm value in the present environment than in any previous time period. Practical implications Operations managers need to play leading roles in ensuring safe working environments. The results provide the support needed to acquire the financial resources necessary to mitigate exposure to unsafe working conditions. Originality/value This study explores the impact of negative workplace safety announcements on a firm’s stock performance. It is the first large-scale study to look at public announcements of workplace incidents and to explore the impact of such announcements in the context of time.

The purpose of risk assessment is to provide information for decision-making. It compares the resulting risk obtained from the analysis with the risk criteria based on the legislation. If the level of risk is undesirable, the organization must take measures under the legislation to reduce or eliminate the risk. There are also cases where the risk assessment leads the company to a repeated analysis and the decision to terminate the investigation due to negligible, resulting risk. The paper focuses on using simulation as a supportive tool to minimize the risk in the workplace of injection moulding plants. It was eliminated bottlenecks and designed suitable injection moulding arrangements to ensure the safety and health of workers at work.

Nowadays, the use of digital is important in meeting the technological needs of the industrial revolution 4.0. The manual HIRARC form is less effective and efficient in terms of filling time. Based on observations, the manual use of the safety log book requires the supervisor to update the content every time. This shows that, filling information physically causes the risk of losing data that has been entered is very high and affects the effectiveness of safety management in the workplace. Therefore, the first objective of this study is to build a security management application and the second objective is to identify the effectiveness of using the application. This application is developed by combining two software namely glides and google sheet. While the second objective instrument is in the form of a likert-scale questionnaire on the effectiveness of using the application to respondents who are workplace users, namely students and lecturers as well as the management of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee and workshop supervisors. The results of the study show that two applications have been built, namely the Integrated Safety Management Application managed by the department management and the Safety Logbook Application used by users at the workplace, ie in the workshop or laboratory where they are combined in an integrated network which is integration and PDCA. While the results of the questionnaire show that the overall mean score is at a high level where this application can facilitate accident complaints to make reports to superiors better by workplace users. In conclusion, this application is flexible and dynamic in use, easy to maintain and suitable for use by organizations or users of different workplaces.

Background: Psychological safety is a key concern in the workplace as organisations continue to see increases in psychological injuries that have significant ramifications on individuals and workplaces. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this issue in healthcare workforces facing extraordinary pressures. This preliminary study aims to enhance our understanding of the factors that healthcare workers value in relation to psychological safety in their respective healthcare settings. Methods: To achieve the research objective, qualitative self-reflection examples were conducted with 12 participants from various health professional backgrounds across public, private, and aged-care settings. The data obtained were thematically analysed using NVivo software (V 12), enabling the identification of key elements associated with psychologically safe workplaces. Results: The results revealed several significant elements that contribute to psychologically safe workplaces in healthcare settings. These elements include effective communication, organisational culture, leadership practices, performance feedback mechanisms, respect among colleagues, staff development opportunities, teamwork, and trust. The findings underscore the critical importance of these foundational elements in fostering psychological safety within healthcare. Conclusion: This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by specifically identifying the key elements that healthcare workers value in terms of psychological safety. By exploring a wide range of healthcare professionals’ perspectives, this research offers valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by healthcare workforces and the necessary conditions for fostering psychological safety. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the lessons they provide for healthcare employers, highlighting the potential for improving workplace wellbeing and performance.

Evaluating the culture of drug safety, of certain services, and specific subjects, especially for the elderly population, makes it possible to identify gaps in clinical nursing care. The study aimed to analyze the social representations of nurses regarding the culture of drug safety in clinical care for the elderly people. This is a descriptive and exploratory research of qualitative nature, having the theoretical support of social representations. The chapter samples 38 nurses via interview and a non-participant observation. Analysis is done using Alceste software. This resulted in seven stable classes, and Class 3 had the largest representation, 23% of the corpus. Class 3 maintained hierarchical and semantic proximity to Class 2, which deals with technologies to ensure the safety of elderly patients in the use of medicines. For nurses, technologies help in the safety of elderly patients, but do not guarantee the extinction of adverse events. The chapter considered the need for patient safety to become an organizational culture favoring the quality of clinical nursing care in the handling of medicines.

This research attempts to inspect the effects of inclusive leadership on employees and their sense of psychological safety and innovative work behaviours. It examines whether coworker envy and organizational cynicism acts as an intervening measure in the link between inclusive leadership and psychological safety. It also endeavours to look into the role of coworker envy and organizational cynicism as a mediating factor in the association between inclusive leadership and innovative work behaviour. For the present research, information was gathered from 279 people employed in the hotel industry. SmartPLS 3 software was used to analyse the data using the PLS-SEM (partial least square-structural equation modelling) method. The findings indicate a significant positive relationship amongst inclusive leadership, psychological safety, and innovative work behaviour. In addition, a partial intervening effect of coworker envy and organizational cynicism was also observed.

Recognizing that procuring specialized software may not be cost-effective for all companies, this article proposes an alternative approach. We suggest configuring the basic functionality of Software AG's ARIS software, commonly used for Enterprise Architecture management, to meet the necessary requirements for OH&S management. This approach aims to provide an affordable solution for companies seeking to enhance workplace safety without the need for dedicated OH&S software.

The mining industry is a crucial driver of economic development, yet it faces significant challenges due to its hazardous nature. Safety and health at work are paramount for sustainable operations within this industry. This study focuses on managers' perceptions of workplace safety factors concerning mining machinery operators and explores how technical, human, and organisational factors influence mining operators' sustainable safety efforts. A survey was conducted in mining companies to analyse management opinions regarding factors influencing occupational safety and health in mining machinery operators. The data collected was statistically processed using the software package SPSS. Statistical tests were used based on the collected data and opinions of the managers. This research's implications are reflected in the identification of key factors that contribute to the effective implementation of security measures and practices. Despite its limitations, the results offer strong empirical support for the proposed theoretical model. These findings provide valuable guidance for researchers and practitioners seeking to enhance safety in the workplace for mining machinery operators. Through an in-depth analysis of these factors, mining company managers can identify key aspects contributing to the effective implementation of security measures and practices. Finally, a framework will be created that will enable the sustainable management of the safety activities of mining machinery operators, which will result in a reduction in the risk of injury and an improvement in the health of workers in the mining sector.

"Safety at the workplace is one of the most relevant issues for companies, due to the high number of accidents happening every year, some of which even deadly. Despite that, this number is decreasing thanks to continuous research and to an increasing application of safety procedures and devices. In line with that, the project presented in this work intends to develop and evaluate a new solution to improve operators’ safety, at a reasonable cost (including adoption and use). The usage of wearable systems (smart-glasses and smartwatches) will improve the efficacy of the solutions previously tested on mobile devices like tablets and smartphones. Although no new devices were developed, the project required the creation of a new software tool, in which a great amount of information was inserted to allow its correct functioning. The main aim of this work is to create a testing procedure to evaluate the impact of this solutions on the employee’s safety. This is extremely important to demonstrate the efficacy of new industry 4.0 applications."

New technologies, machines and processes in manufacturing companies are also changing jobs. The increasing integration of information technology into all areas of the economy also has an impact on workers' health and occupational safety. The proportion of electronic components and software in production facilities is constantly increasing, but this also means that the service life of machines and equipment is decreasing. In addition, processes have to be changed and employees have to be retrained or further trained. The networking of plants, machines, databases, departments and companies is progressing ever faster and the collection of data as well as its storage and evaluation is becoming an ever greater challenge. Increasing networking requires continuous investment in the latest tools, hardware and innovative strategies to protect their networks. Very often, departments have to be restructured, new departments created and new employees hired. It can be observed that the training of new professionals cannot be adapted to the new technological developments at the same pace, so that companies have to invest more and more in the training of their own employees. In this environment, prevention services must continuously follow technological developments and contribute to designing safe technologies, developing new models and providing operators and safety professionals with fast and targeted information on machine safety and OSH. All communication channels should be used to exchange information with workers and employers. Industry 4.0 (new technologies) with integrated galloping digitalisation accordingly also requires digital prevention. The establishment of a prevention ecosystem should enable the networking of all service providers and provide information and updates on occupational safety and health directly to companies and workers. The concept of a prevention platform is described here, an ecosystem that continuously adapts prevention services to the technological change of digital production. Artificial intelligence (AI) assistance systems that have been successfully used to date are to be integrated into the ecosystem and support data analysis, enable automatic answers to the most frequently asked questions, identify hazards at specific workplaces and recommend anticipatory measures. The ecosystem is to be supported by national expert teams, networking with international partners is to be steadily expanded, interfaces are to be continuously developed and the latest technologies for increasing safety in the workplace are to be promoted. Because when technology changes rapidly, prevention must keep pace, and when the industry of things networks machines globally, prevention must also network globally.

Industry is implementing increasing amounts of automation into operations. The Australian mining industry is no exception as it is introducing autonomous mining vehicles and trains, remote controlled processing plants and the use of drones and robots to do survey and inspection work. Often these technologies are adopted to improve operational efficiencies and to reduce workers' exposure to high risk situations. However, in most mining environments, the adoption of automated technologies has not completely removed humans from the operation. Humans still need to interact with the technology to clean, service and maintain it. Humans also have to perform other tasks in the automated mining environment such as inspection of ground conditions, mapping mining and dump areas, maintaining roads and infrastructure etc. Thus, introducing automation into mining environments has the potential to introduce new and significant human-system interaction safety risks. The emergence of these new safety risks are evident in recent accidents in the mining industry as well as in other industries that have introduced automation. Traditionally, risk based approaches have been used in the Australian mining industry and other industries to identify and treat safety related risks. Such approaches include the use of hazard identification techniques (HAZID), Workplace Risk Assessment and Control (WRAC), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis or Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMEA or FMECA), and Process or Job based Hazard Analysis (PHA or JHA). These traditional techniques have helped reduce fatal and catastrophic incidents in the mining industry but deficiencies in their application has also been highlighted in a number of major accident investigation reports. In addition, recent research has suggested that that traditional risk identification techniques by not be effective for new, software-enabled technologies that are embedded in socio-technical systems with complex or dynamic human-system interactions. In response new socio-technical risk assessment approaches have been develop such as System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and Strategies Analysis for Enhancing Resilience (SAfER). However no publications could be found that seek to understand from a end-user perspective the efficacy of the traditional and new techniques in assessing human-system interaction risks associated with the introduction of autonomous and automated technologies in mining environments.To begin to address this gap, research was conducted that sought to answer the question - What combination of risk assessment techniques delivers the most effective means of identifying risks associated with human-system interactions in remote and autonomous mining operations? The research method involved have mining industry professionals trial four techniques - Preliminary Hazard Analysis (HAZID), Failure Mode and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Strategies Analysis for Enhancing Resilience (SAfER), and System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) (Systems-theory Method) - in a workshop environment. Three different workshops were conducted each of which focused on a different automated technology. The first focused on identifying human-system interaction safety risks in surface mine automated haulage areas. The second focused on identifying human-system interaction safety risk associated with autonomous longwall mining operations underground. The third focused on human-system interaction safety risks associated with remote controlled operation of ore processing plants. After the workshop trialed each technique, the participants were survey to collect their perceptions of the usability and usefulness of each technique. Results from the participant feedback suggest that each techniques was able to identify potentially hazardous human-system interactions but that each had strengths and weaknesses depending on whether risks were being assessed risks pre or post implementation. A hybrid or combination approach was suggested with further testing of the proposed approach being recommended.

In underground coal mines, miners face the hazard of being struck or pinned by a piece of mobile mining machinery. Proximity detection systems have been developed and are used by the industry to protect miners around these machines by detecting the presence of the miners and automatically issuing warnings or disabling machine motion when a miner is in potentially dangerous proximity. These systems were originally developed for continuous mining machines, slow-moving machines that move on bulldozer-style tracks, and are now mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to be used on continuous mining machines. These systems are now being adapted to other underground vehicles, such as shuttle cars, scoops, and battery haulers — vehicles that move on rubber tires at much higher speeds. There are concerns that the detection range of these systems may not provide for an adequate stopping distance on these faster moving machines. To address these concerns, researchers have developed a dynamic modeling system to determine the stopping distance of mobile underground coal equipment. This model can be used in conjunction with worker escapability data and/or information on interaction with other vehicles to provide insight into whether or not proximity detection systems will be adequate for the underground mining workplace. This paper details the background, development, and operation of the resulting application software, focusing on the utility of the graphical user interface to visualize the generated data. The refined data developed by this process can then be utilized by mine operators and proximity detection system manufacturers to more accurately determine the detection range needed to provide effective protection for miners working in an underground mining environment.

The automatic operation of the pedals of a motor vehicle represents a first stage of the transition from driving without assistance to rolling in completely autonomous mode. This paper presents the construction of an autonomous control system that actuates the acceleration and braking pedals for a passenger car equipped with an automatic transmission. The system allows the completely autonomous rolling of the vehicle on the chassis dynamometer. This type of control has many advantages such as ensuring a good repeatability of the tests performed or improving the safety in the workplace by reducing human involvement. For this type of automation, a PID controller is used, with the input data being the speed required by the WLTC test cycle. The output data is represented by the position of the actuating elements and the feedback of the system is provided by the actual speed of the motor vehicle. In order to determine the actual speed of the motor vehicle, an incremental optical encoder is mounted to the wheel of the vehicle. The position of the acceleration and braking pedals is determined by the position transducers of the actuating elements. The development of the hardware continues with the design of the assembly that supports the two actuators as well as the parts that allow the connection between the pedals and the execution elements. The actual mechanical stress of the hardware is determined using a finite elements analysis, which requires a 3D model of the automated system components. The stability analysis is performed by checking the tilt of the device and the relative slip between the device and the vehicle floor. For control software design, the Arduino programming environment was chosen, being able to perform the automated control between the input and the output data of the drive system with good accuracy and calculation speed.

Abstract This paper highlights the role of the migrant and expatriate labor force and their contributions to the oil and gas industry in the Gulf. It would be instructive to acknowledge and learn from the working experiences and challenges faced by these migrant workers. Their backgrounds, skills, knowledge, and technical and managerial know-how have helped develop the oil and gas industry and, to a large extent, the economic development of the Gulf. Understanding their roles and contributions would serve at least two things. First, to appreciate the important part they took in the development of the Gulf oil and gas industry and hence to ensure the protection of their rights under local laws. Second, to tell a complete story of the Gulf's oil and gas industry and the country's development. In addition, multiple themes were examined, such as the challenges and rewards of working in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf, sustainability, and the work environment. The main method used to acquire information regarding the labor dimension in the oil and gas industry in the Gulf was through semi-structured interviews. The interviewees were selected through a sampling technique known as snowball sampling. The interviews were then audio and video recorded with the interviewee's permission. After that, the interviews were transcribed and analyzed using a corpora analysis software, Lancsbox. The various themes were identified and used to write this research paper. Some themes identified are the interviewees’ narratives and reasons for choosing to work in Gulf's oil and gas industry, their workplace challenges, their mentorship experiences, and their advice for young aspirant engineers. They also discussed and compared their professional and personal experiences in Gulf to other places they have worked. Knowing what they do and how they contribute would be beneficial for at least two reasons. First, to recognize the crucial part they play in the growth of the Gulf's oil and gas sector and, as a result, to ensure that their rights are protected by local legislation. Second, to provide a more thorough account of the country's gas and oil sector development. Many international workers find satisfaction in the privileges and comfort their jobs, their host nation, and its thriving oil and gas industry offer them. They are drawn to the nation's multiculturalism, language, opportunities, and safety and want to keep giving back. That, however, does not come without the special difficulties highlighted in this research.

From the first Neanderthals and Sapiens civilizations to the current world powers, human evolution was driven by its own will to develop, grow, discover, innovate and consolidate. Walking through the history of Humanity is witnessing an entire social, cultural and political evolution, understanding how the Society can shape the individual, and how the individual constitutes the Society. At the centre of this evolution is the brain, as the architect, engineer and executor of all this evolution. The cortical macrostructures of this organ – reptilian, limbic and neocortex systems are responsible for the instinct of preservation and reproduction of the species, but they also imagine and conceive solutions for the most varied daily demands, from simple problems to critical complexities. Its internal structures, such as amygdala, frontal lobes and corpus callosum, in addition to processing all the inputs of the senses – smell, hearing, touch, etc – form neurochemical social bonds, which guarantees preservation, but also manage an almost infinite range of emotions and interactions. The perception, the result of this whole process, in addition to forming a mental projection of the environment, recognizes opportunities and risks, generating an individual and social memory regarding the dangers of everyday life. When this perception is faced with the First Industrial Revolution, the safety at work will be associated with industrial equipment, organizational culture, workplaces, as well as the natural and evolved perception of risk of each individual – a software present in the hardware of the brain’s structures since the first civilizations. Following this evolution, work systems also evolved from simple linear production lines to complex sociotechnical workplaces, involving people, equipment, processes and organizational culture. The methodologies and tools designed to understand these risks, however, do not evolve at the same speed, persisting a misconception that current workplaces can be analysed, in relation to risk, like a linear production line. In this aspect, integrating the concepts of neurosciences, sociology, engineering and ergonomics, but not limited to these, the Human Factors approach, which is integrative and multidisciplinary, brings a systemic understanding of work environments, understanding and demonstrating the real complexity present.
