Abstract (sommario):
“To earn a living”. The definition of work and our understanding of the workplace have changed in recent years due to the emergence of occupational health and is now a field of study under continuous improvement. Despite the fact that there is a huge amount of information, studies, and guidance about how to improve occupational security, the factors that must be considered in a workplace as real hazards to avoid in order to achieve a truly healthy workplace are always subject to debate. This research contributes to efforts in two important ways. The first goal assesses the information about security risk factors established and mentioned by official international institutions aimed at safety and security science by using the relationship and categorization between the identified risks during work activities performance. The second goal is to establish the necessary requirements to be fulfilled to ensure that a workplace will be considered “healthy and safe”. As a result, it is defined that the lack of ergonomics represents the most critical risk factor in order to reduce the incidence of work-related illness during the design and continuous improvement of a tailored workplace.

Abstract (sommario):
This study investigated the role of workplace preparedness actions in employee perceptions of workplace risk, workplace preparedness, and personal self-efficacy in an active shooter event. Data were drawn from an online, state representative survey of 668 Pennsylvania residents in 2019. Nearly 40% of employees reported their workplaces had not taken any preparedness actions. Having a workplace take a greater number of preparedness actions was associated with increased self-efficacy and increased perceptions of workplace preparedness, but also an increase in perceived risk. Males and gun owners perceived lower levels of workplace risk and reported substantially higher self-efficacy. However, associations between workplace efforts and self-efficacy differed from those for perceived workplace preparedness. Associations with firearm policy and the presence of security staff also differed for the two outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
In modern occupational health and safety approach, determining sources of hazards and risks in working environment, taking prevention and protection measures and informing employees are important basic issues. Every year 313 million non-fatal accident occurs. Considering economic situations, it is estimated that countries are loosing almost over 4% of gross domestic product because of occupational accidents and deseases. Occupational Health and Safety Law, legislated in 2012, has brought new orders to working life. The by-laws related to the articles of this law have brought important responsibilities to employers and employees. A healty and safe working environment is as much important for protecting right of life which is one of the primer human rights as for quality, productivity, sustainability and establishing working peace. Occupational health and safety is a culture. In working environment, changing working culture is chalenging. To achieve this changing goal, employers and autherised personnel have important responsibilities. The security climate is widely recognized as an important organizational factor in securing workplace safety. Various definitions have been made for security climate. A climate of security can be defined as an organization / organization / organization / organization, in short, as a concrete measure of employees' perceptions and attitudes that reflect their beliefs about security in a work environment. In this study, the effect of the security climate in a workplace on OHS services was examinedsecurity culture

Abstract (sommario):
Little is known about the environmental and organisational determinants of workplace violence in correctional health settings. This paper describes the views of health professionals working in these settings on the factors influencing workplace violence risk. All employees of a large correctional health service in New South Wales, Australia, were invited to complete an online survey. The survey included an open-ended question seeking the views of participants about the factors influencing workplace violence in correctional health settings. Responses to this question were analysed using qualitative thematic analysis. Participants identified several factors that they felt reduced the risk of violence in their workplace, including: appropriate workplace health and safety policies and procedures; professionalism among health staff; the presence of prison guards and the quality of security provided; and physical barriers within clinics. Conversely, participants perceived workplace violence risk to be increased by: low health staff-to-patient and correctional officer-to-patient ratios; high workloads; insufficient or underperforming security staff; and poor management of violence, especially horizontal violence. The views of these participants should inform efforts to prevent workplace violence among correctional health professionals.

Abstract (sommario):
The safety and health protection of employees in the workplace is one of the most important aspects of the European Union and should be perceived in the same way in Poland. Achieving an appropriate level of occupational health and safety as well as a safety culture in an enterprise requires specific outlays, including financial ones, from the employer. Entrepreneurs are only slightly aware of the magnitude of losses caused by inadequate working conditions. Few workplaces carry out analyses of the relationship between the level of occupational health and safety and the costs incurred, and not all costs related to accidents at work are analyzed – especially indirect costs. The article presents what activities and related costs improve the company’s occupational health and safety level, what events generate only losses, and how the level of occupational health and safety affects the amount of social security contributions for accidents at work and occupational diseases.

Abstract (sommario):
With “stay at home” orders in effect during early COVID-19, many United States (U.S.) food system workers attended in-person work to maintain national food supply chain operations. Anecdotally, many encountered barriers to staying home despite symptomatic COVID-19 illness. We conducted a national, cross-sectional, online survey between 31 July and 2 October 2020 among 2535 respondents. Using multivariable regression and free-text analyses, we investigated factors associated with workers’ intentions to attend work while ill (i.e., presenteeism intentions) during the early COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, 8.8% of respondents intended to attend work with COVID-19 disease symptoms. Almost half (41.1%) reported low or very low household food security. Workers reporting a higher workplace safety climate score were half as likely to report presenteeism intentions (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 0.52, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.37, 0.75) relative to those reporting lower scores. Workers reporting low (aOR 2.06, 95% CI 1.35, 3.13) or very low (aOR 2.31, 95% CI 1.50, 3.13) household food security levels had twice the odds of reporting presenteeism intentions relative to those reporting high/marginal food security. Workplace culture and safety climate could enable employees to feel like they can take leave when sick during a pandemic, which is critical to maintaining individual and workplace health. We stress the need for strategies which address vulnerabilities and empower food workers to make health-protective decisions.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a growing body of evidence indicating poorer working conditions for migrant workers, particularly refugees, compared with native-born workers. Our objectives were to compare exposure to workplace psychosocial stressors in working refugees with other migrant groups and Australian-born workers of Caucasian ancestry and to describe the working experience of refugees. Cross-sectional surveys collected information on the workplace stressors of job complexity, control, security, bullying, and racial discrimination from six migrant groups (n = 1062) and Caucasian Australians (n = 1051); semi-structured face-to-face interviews were used with currently employed refugees (n = 30). Content analysis examined the qualitative data. Compared to all other groups, working refugees were more likely to report experiencing racial discrimination in the workplace and to report exposure to more than three hazards. Content analysis indicated that working refugees are working below their capacity, in terms of hours and qualifications, and in jobs that were low status and lacked security. Despite challenging work conditions, participants reported adequate health and safety training and feeling a sense of pride in their work. These findings highlight the need for better support for refugees in negotiating the workplace once they find employment and the importance of employers providing an inclusive and equitable workplace.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Security is the most critical thing in today’s working conditions for the workers who are working in process industries and manufacturing industries. In order to have a safe workplace, a suitable safety system is yet to be developed for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterpiises-level companies. Therefore, a safety system is developed to monitor the temperature of the employee while entering the workplace and company gate. Even for the single parameter health check, the control system to get the data from the sensor to the database and the database needs to be checked for the limitation of range whether it is acceptable or not. Based on the data condition, the sound alarm system needs to be connected and at the same time, a Short message service needs to be sent to the higher authorities. This information is sent to top management in an email form for their record and the information. The database contains data for the long period to have a statistical analysis of health issues for the employees. This statistical data analysis can help to improve the safety standard at companies. Considering the low-cost estimation, this safety system can be used in any MSME-level company.

Abstract (sommario):
Notary office is one type of workplace that requires the implementation of occupational health and safety as well as social security / BPJS employment for its workers. This study aims to analyze the implementation of occupational health and safety as well as social security/BPJS employment for workers in notary offices. This research is a normative juridical research that uses legal principles, laws and doctrines as the main legal material, even the main law is analyzed and interpreted against secondary legal material in the form of literature or library material, to find research results according to the problems posed. The results showed that the implementation of occupational health and safety as well as social security/employment BPJS for workers in notary offices still needs to be improved. Some factors that influence the implementation include employee and management awareness of the importance of occupational health and safety, company policies that support the implementation of occupational health and safety, and the availability of funds to finance social security/employment BPJS. This study recommends the need to increase employee and management awareness of the importance of occupational health and safety as well as social security/employment BPJS for workers in notary offices. This can be done through socialization and training, implementation of company policies that support the implementation of occupational health and safety as well as social security/BPJS employment, and the allocation of sufficient funds to finance the program. Thus, it is expected to create a healthy, safe, and social protection environment for workers in notary offices.

Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND: Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) has become a prominent solution to improve the robustness of real-time service provisioning through assisted functions for day-to-day activities. The application of the robotic system in security services helps to improve the precision of event detection and environmental monitoring with ease. OBJECTIVES: This paper discusses activity detection and analysis (ADA) using security robots in workplaces. The application scenario of this method relies on processing image and sensor data for event and activity detection. The events that are detected are classified for its abnormality based on the analysis performed using the sensor and image data operated using a convolution neural network. This method aims to improve the accuracy of detection by mitigating the deviations that are classified in different levels of the convolution process. RESULTS: The differences are identified based on independent data correlation and information processing. The performance of the proposed method is verified for the three human activities, such as standing, walking, and running, as detected using the images and sensor dataset. CONCLUSION: The results are compared with the existing method for metrics accuracy, classification time, and recall.

Abstract (sommario):
Employees play important roles regarding safety culture in the manufacturing industry. The study was conducted among 108 manufacturing workers and aimed to determine employees' perceptions of safety culture in the manufacturing industry. The data obtained were analysed to see the relationship between sociodemographic factors and safety culture dimensions to safety performance. The four aspects of perception include four dimensions of management commitment, employee engagement, communication, and training and education. Demographic factors such as age and duration of work were not significantly related to variables related to staff perceptions (p > 0.05). In addition, the relationship between aspects of security culture dimensions and safety performance showed that there was a significant relationship between communication having the highest relationship (r = 0.403, P < 0.01) and the lowest relationship by management commitment dimension (r = 0.244, p < 0.01). The overall a grand total of these studies show a significant positive relationship with workers’ safety in the workplace (r = 0.377, p < 0.01). Therefore, companies are encouraged to increase training programs in the workplace to raise awareness of workplace hazard awareness as well as ongoing health and safety programs through helpful channels for employees to reduce workplace accidents.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the late nineteenth century, American employers have relied on a program of welfare capitalism to deflect incursions into the workplace from the regulatory state or organized workers. Welfare capitalism encompasses social welfare benefits and health, safety, or leisure programs offered through the workplace—programs established and directed by the employer. In periods of labor upheaval and political social reform, American firms have relied on workplace social welfare as a private, managerial response to political pressure from the state and workers—particularly when workers sought to use the state to improve working conditions and guarantee economic security. Where or when employers no longer faced these threats, managers reasserted their control over the terms of work, compensation, and security. Out of this conflict emerged a public-private welfare regime, heavily tilted toward private sources and based on the exclusion of those who most needed economic assistance. Any narrative of the American welfare state, therefore, belongs within the century-long story of welfare capitalism.

Abstract (sommario):
The building industry contributed an impressive share in Pakistan's growth sector, where the construction industry contributes almost 2.74% of the GDP of Pakistan. In most metropolitan cities, the trend of building multi-story structures is at increase. However, this construction industry is a prominent accident-prone industry where laborers generally work in an unsafe environment. These projects suffer from fatal and non-fatal accidents as labor health and security are not a prime aim in the construction industry despite all employees still dealing with safety issues. This research examines the Occupational safety and health (OSH) performance in High-rise building projects in Pakistan. This review focuses on adopting qualitative approaches, using the comprehensive literature approach for seeking current practice in health and safety and OHS laws in Pakistan's building industry. Finally, it proposes a realistic strategy for developing a safe environment at workplaces. Research indicates that Pakistan's construction sector should consider workers' safety as a priority, update and enforce safety laws at the workplace to enrich OHS conditions in the Pakistani construction sector.

Abstract (sommario):
The occupational safety and health movement has been transformed from a struggle emphasizing workplace democracy to a de-politicized technical debate. Professionals involved in occupational safety and health (OSH) are continuously urged to keep “politics” out of their work. However, “politics,” defined as the participation in knowledge production and decision-making that profoundly affects working life, is inherent to the work of OSH professionals. These professionals function within specified roles largely created and shaped to meet the needs of the corporate class. In this context, there is a need for professionals who are explicitly allied to workers struggling for health and safety. However, there are powerful constraints to the development of this alliance, including professionals’ need for jobs, job security, and credibility. Additionally, many professionals seeking an alliance with workers remain under the sway of hegemonic myths that limit their ability to function as worker allies. These myths include non-recognition of class power and its effects on workplace health, a view of OSH as purely a technical issue, and a failure to recognize how OSH knowledge is shaped by its political/economic context. Ideas for developing an alternative praxis are offered.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, the use of digital is important in meeting the technological needs of the industrial revolution 4.0. The manual HIRARC form is less effective and efficient in terms of filling time. Based on observations, the manual use of the safety log book requires the supervisor to update the content every time. This shows that, filling information physically causes the risk of losing data that has been entered is very high and affects the effectiveness of safety management in the workplace. Therefore, the first objective of this study is to build a security management application and the second objective is to identify the effectiveness of using the application. This application is developed by combining two software namely glides and google sheet. While the second objective instrument is in the form of a likert-scale questionnaire on the effectiveness of using the application to respondents who are workplace users, namely students and lecturers as well as the management of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee and workshop supervisors. The results of the study show that two applications have been built, namely the Integrated Safety Management Application managed by the department management and the Safety Logbook Application used by users at the workplace, ie in the workshop or laboratory where they are combined in an integrated network which is integration and PDCA. While the results of the questionnaire show that the overall mean score is at a high level where this application can facilitate accident complaints to make reports to superiors better by workplace users. In conclusion, this application is flexible and dynamic in use, easy to maintain and suitable for use by organizations or users of different workplaces.

Abstract (sommario):
Every year more temporary migrant workers come to Canada to fill labour shortages in the agricultural sector. While research has examined the ways that these workers are made vulnerable and exploitable due to their temporary statuses, less has focused on the subjective experiences of migrant agricultural workers in regards their workplace health and safety. We conducted interviews and focus groups with migrant workers in the interior of British Columbia, Canada and used a narrative line of inquiry to highlight two main themes that illustrate the implicit and complex mechanisms that can structure migrant agricultural workers’ workplace climate, and ultimately, endanger their health and safety. The two themes we elaborate are (1) authorities that silence; and (2) “I will not leave my body here.” We discuss the implications of each theme, ultimately arguing that a number of complex political and economic forces create a climate of coercion in which workers feel compelled to choose between their health and safety and tenuous economic security.

Abstract (sommario):
BACKGROUND: The increasing use of robotics in the work of co-workers poses some new problems in terms of occupational safety and health. In the workplace, industrial robots are being used increasingly. During operations such as repairs, unmanageable, adjustment, and set-up, robots can cause serious and fatal injuries to workers. Collaborative robotics recently plays a rising role in the manufacturing filed, warehouses, mining agriculture, and much more in modern industrial environments. This development advances with many benefits, like higher efficiency, increased productivity, and new challenges like new hazards and risks from the elimination of human and robotic barriers. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, the Advanced Human-Robot Collaboration Model (AHRCM) approach is to enhance the risk assessment and to make the workplace involving security robots. The robots use perception cameras and generate scene diagrams for semantic depictions of their environment. Furthermore, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have utilized to develop a highly protected security robot based risk management system in the workplace. RESULTS: The experimental results show that the proposed AHRCM method achieves high performance in human-robot mutual adaption and reduce the risk. CONCLUSION: Through an experiment in the field of human subjects, demonstrated that policies based on the proposed model improved the efficiency of the human-robot team significantly compared with policies assuming complete human-robot adaptation.

Abstract (sommario):
Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic infectious disease that remains to be a primary health concern globally. The Philippines is among the top TB-burdened countries. Workplace TB prevention and control programs are essential to ensure the health and safety of workers and economic security. There remains a knowledge gap regarding the Philippine workplace TB prevention and control program implementation. This qualitative study involving key informant interviews reviewed the implementation of the workplace TB program in selected companies in a high TB burden region in Eastern Philippines. Results were presented under four themes in accordance with the components of the workplace TB policy: preventive strategies, medical management, data recording and reporting, and social policy. Various good practices, opportunities, and challenges in the implementation of the workplace TB program were identified. There is a need to strengthen the enforcement of policy across different components. Compliance with guidelines on preventive strategies and recording and reporting schemes needs to be intensified. Coordination across different levels and agencies may also be enhanced to allow more efficient implementation. Increased awareness of corporate decision-makers may improve company ownership of the program leading to improved implementation while increased awareness of employees on their rights and entitlements may likewise enhance compliance.

Abstract (sommario):
Changes are happening everywhere, and the need to confront them is constant. Occupational safety and health protection is one of the fundamental rights of every human being, because the only safe work, healthy and safe working environment enable productive work and life. The Law on Safety and Health of Work regulates the implementation and improvement of the safety and health at work of persons involved in work processes, as well as persons encountered in the workplace, in order to prevent injuries at work, occupational diseases and diseases related to work. Namely, occupational injuries and occupational diseases are often accompanied by injuries, absenteeism from work that generates costs and expenditures because the worker does not work, the stagnation that occurs in production, and what significant funds are allocated for the treatment of workers, the compensation of his salary and other costs and expenditures that fall under the burden of employer and social security funds. The level of safety depends on the health and working capacity of employees, and therefore productivity within the company, which at the national level reflects on the level of national income. At the same time, by improving the protection of health at work and reducing the number of injuries at work, professional and other diseases, the burden on social security funds is reduced, which directly reflects the level of allocation of these funds on the basis of contributions and from the national budget. Therefore, the level of safety depends on the health and working capacity of employees, and therefore the productivity in the company, but also the ability of the working population at the national level, which affects the national income and standard of all citizens. A fireman is a member of a Fire Brigade aimed at extinguishing or controlling fire and fire styles, as well as protecting and rescuing persons and property during natural disasters and natural disasters, providing technical assistance in accidents and dangerous situations. In different countries, firefighters are organized differently, but they are characterized by a common will to protect man and his goods from uncontrolled fire. Firefighters are divided into professional and voluntary. Quality training is very important in fighting fire in order to intervene timely. Firefighters are in an unenviable position during interventions. Personal fire equipment is very important because it protects them from various dangers that are in contact with high-temperature bodies. The workplace of the firefighter is a workplace with an increased risk and it is necessary to take measures of protection in order to minimize the risk. It is necessary to quality training of future firefighters, since the knowledge acquired during schooling depends on their life, as well as the life of those who need to be saved.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the problems that emerged with industrialization in the world is the fact that the health and safety of workers is at risk. Unfortunately, Turkey does not show sufficient sensitivity to this issue. Therefore, thousands of our employees have work accidents every year. Before or after work accidents, inspectors of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security proactively carry out inspections on behalf of occupational safety in order to prevent these bad consequences. In this study, the situation analysis of workplace inspections carried out within the scope of ILO Convention No. 81 on labor inspection after the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Law No. 6331 was conducted. For this purpose, data on inspections are taken from the Ministry of Labor and Social Security Guidance and Inspection Directorate Activities and Social Security Institution Statistical Yearbooks. The data set was created to cover the period between 2013-2022 in order to observe the impact of the OHS Law No.6331 on business inspections in the 10-year period from the date of entry into force. Work accidents were examined by creating hypotheses using the data of the number of inspections, the number of workers reached during the inspections, the causes of work accidents examined in the inspections, the number of active insured people and the number of employees, and these data were evaluated with correlation analysis, which is one of the quantitative research methods. As a result, it was calculated that the number of labor inspections in Turkey is very low, insufficient in terms of occupational accidents, and has an average impact of 2.37% in terms of OHS. In future studies, a point of view has been put forward for theoretical and applied research to increase this effect and the existence of a different situation for the prevention of work accidents in Turkey has been pointed out.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, the provinces in which enterprises operate heavily in the Turkish furniture industrywere subjected to an efficiency assessment using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method based on work accidentsand occupational diseases. The data related to the furniture industry was obtained from the Social Security Institution (SSI) and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MoLSS). The number of operating businesses and the number of employees insured in each province were evaluated as inputs for the analysis. The total number of workplace physicians and other health personnel in each province, the number of workplace physician and occupational safety centers and A, B, and C-class occupational health and safety specialists were used as outputs. The number of employees who experienced work accidents and occupational diseases, deaths resulting from work accidents and occupational diseases, total temporary disability periods, the number of beneficiaries, and the number of those receiving permanent disability income in each province were evaluated as undesirable outputs. The data was analyzed using the DEA method by modeling the undesired outputs in 6 different ways, and the efficiency of each province was determined. It was seen that Model 6 gave the most ideal results in DEA efficiency assessments. Aydın, Çanakkale, Diyarbakır, Eskişehir, Malatya, Muğla, Trabzon and Zonguldak were determined as the most effective provinces in terms of occupational health and safety. The results were evaluated along with the literature, and recommendations were presented.

Abstract (sommario):
In a country that struggles on safety standards and relying heavily on manual labour, Malaysia over the decade had to be very objective in defining work- relatedness among musculoskeletal disorder cases especially chronic low back pain. The BACKS questionnaire was a proposed Back Apparatus; a Collaboration between National University of Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) with Malaysian Social Security Organization (SOCSO) to assist in determining occupational chronic back pain. In the questionnaire, chronic back pain was defined as minimal cumulative back pain for more than 2 weeks in the past year, Pain Visual Analog Score above 2 cm and Oswestry Disability Index of above 20%. Based on the SOCSO registry from 2008 to 2010, 428 (56.3%) workers of 760 workers with back pain agreed and met the requirements of our study. According to the standards of the Medical Board, the BACKS Tool reported a sensitivity of 62.7%, specificity of 94.5%, positive- predictive value (PPV) of 92.9% and negative- predictive value (NPV) of 69.0% with moderate agreement as Kappa value was 0.56. The BACKS Tool served as a complementary assessment along with visits to the workplace that has its advantages when one would to conduct a self- administered assessment of their workplace by safety and health officers, organizations with limited funding.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite extensive protection for employees against sexual harassment in the workplace, South African workplaces are still riddled with this harmful conduct. The severe consequences for victims and workplaces necessitate an analysis of the development of South African law to establish its successes, but also the shortcomings that continue to exist. Although there is a matrix of laws protecting employees against sexual harassment, the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, which regards harassment as a form of discrimination, is still the primary statute. In this article I argue that the tendency to focus on sexual harassment as a dignity and equality issue does not take sufficient cognisance of sexual harassment as a multifaceted issue involving criminal conduct, which threatens employees’ employment security and impacts on employees’ health and safety. An analysis of case law indicates that many employers have not adopted a policy on sexual harassment, and that some employers and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration commissioners do not deal with sexual harassment in a gender-sensitive way, which is an approach endorsed by the International Labour Organization’s Violence and Harassment Convention 190 of 2019. This Convention emphasises the need for an inclusive, integrated approach to combat harassment. To align the protection of victims of harassment with the Convention, South Africa adopted a Code of Good Practice on the Prevention and Elimination of Harassment in the Workplace in 2022. This Code, dealing with different kinds of harassment, including sexual harassment, replaced the 2005 Code of Good Practice on the Handling of Sexual Harassment Cases in the Workplace. By comparing the 2005 Code and related jurisprudence to the 2022 Code, the article considers whether sexual harassment is likely to be addressed more effectively under the 2022 Code. The 2022 Code has made certain improvements to the 2005 Code, but the altered definition of sexual harassment indicates the difficulties created by adopting one code to cover both misconduct and discrimination. In addition, aspects of the Convention, such as protecting the health and safety of employees, are not dealt with effectively in the 2022 Code. A separate code should be issued in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act to address the psychosocial safety of employees and the compensation of victims in terms of the Compensation for Injuries and Diseases Act 130 of 1993.

Abstract (sommario):
Young-onset dementia (YOD) occurs at <65 years of age. Individuals with YOD experience social and psychological disturbances, including a loss of employment. This economic toll affects them, their families, and their caregivers. Employers have an increasing role in supporting affected employees in remaining employed, an important component of the “fight for their dignity”. This study aims to clarify the workplace support experiences of employees with YOD. To assess the experiences of employers with at least one affected employee, we interviewed personnel from eight facilities for qualitative analysis. We identified 5 unique categories and 14 subcategories encompassing the following aspects: confusion at the workplace stemming from the uncertainty of the disease, sensitivity when recommending consultation and diagnosis, creating a system that considers safety and security, building consensus among employers, supporting employees with YOD and their families, and assisting the individual with YOD with activities of daily living. Employers should be open to addressing dementia-related issues in the workplace, including obtaining information from employees’ physicians so that appropriate support can be provided. Appropriate support can include work accommodations, needs-based support, and meetings with families to build consensus for continued employment. This information can facilitate the creation of new training materials for employers.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractObjectivesWe aimed to explore how perceived safety after terrorism is connected to views on security measures and emergency preparedness in a workplace setting.MethodsUsing a questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study of ministerial employees in Norway who were targeted in a terrorist attack in 2011 (n=3344), we investigated how employees’ perceived safety at work 9 to 10 months after the attack was associated with their perceptions of whether security measures were sufficiently prioritized at work, whether there had been sufficient escape and evacuation training, and whether they were confident with evacuation procedures.ResultsWe found strong evidence of increasing perceived safety at work the more employees believed security measures were sufficiently prioritized at work (partially confounded by post-traumatic stress disorder), and the better their knowledge of evacuation procedures (modified by gender and education).ConclusionsThe present study suggests that employers may enhance perceived safety at work for terror-exposed employees by showing a commitment to security measures and by ensuring employees know evacuation procedures well. More research is needed to investigate causality patterns behind the associations found in this cross-sectional study. (Disaster Med Public Health Preparedness. 2016;10:805–811)

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses Sewio's real-time positioning system, which helps organizations protect workers in production areas by improving their safety, reducing the time needed for collection and rescue operations, increasing safety and simplifying the reconciliation of workplace time. The system works on the principle that every employee, supplier or visitor to the production plant receives a tag that identifies their exact location in real time. The tag can be part of a standard visitor card, such as cards issued at conferences. Optionally, the labels can also be attached to the clothing within the worker's arm or possibly to a part of the helmet. This article describes the applications of the use of the RTLS localization system in critical cases of threats to workers' health.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the effectiveness of an intervention program to enhance unit safety climate and minimize employee risk of injury from patient violence. The intervention program, including a 3-day workshop, was offered to personnel on maximum security units of an Israeli psychiatric hospital. Safety climate was examined before and after the implementation of the intervention, and incidents of patient violence were investigated. Six months after the intervention, a significant improvement in employees’ perceptions of management’s commitment to safety as well as a marginally significant improvement in communication about safety issues were found. This study demonstrated that an intervention program to enhance safety climate was associated with a decrease in the number of aggressive incidents. The researchers concluded that this intervention program is likely to return a sense of safety to workers and reduce workplace violence.

Abstract (sommario):
About one-third of adult life is spent in the workplace. The use of psychoactive substances is a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality. The consumption of psychoactive substances during or outside working hours greatly increases the frequency and severity of labor accidents, as well as the workers’ poor general state of health and productivity, implying higher costs for enterprises. It is the responsibility of organizations to ensure the safety and health of their workers. These cannot be limited to traditional routine clinical exams, as other aspects also have an impact on health. Thus, prevention and intervention in the consumption of psychoactive substances (e.g., ethanol, opioids, central nervous system stimulants or depressants, hallucinogens, Cannabis derivatives, dissociative substances, and inhalants) in labor activity should be considered as an investment of organizations and not as a cost, in view of the professional, personal, and family advantages for workers and employers, with a potential impact on productivity, security, health, and quality of life at work. Despite the extensive literature on the subject, each article generally focuses on one or another aspect of a very specific nature, not tackling the problem in a holistic way by confronting clinical, safety, and legal issues. This article presents a reflection on the legal, laboratorial, clinical, ethical, forensic, and safety concerns related to the consumption of psychoactive substances in the workplace, and can be a cross-cutting contribution to occupational medicine, forensic medicine, and insurance medicine, as well as for entrepreneurs, lawyers, judges, workers, and technicians from the public and private sectors that develop projects in this area. This discussion is based on general principles established internationally and highlights the role of the occupational healthcare system and other decision-making actors in the prevention and supervision of workplace psychoactive consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
Due to COVID-19, horseracing was required to cease all activity in March 2020; however, little is known about the pandemic’s impact on staff working practices. This study investigated the impact of COVID-19 on staff working practices during the initial lockdown phases. An online survey about working conditions during lockdown was answered by 287 participants. Chi-squared tests for independence and binary logistic regression (BLR) analysis was undertaken. A total of 53.7% (n = 154) of staff were working during lockdown. Pandemic-specific workplace changes were reported as effective by 87.8% (n = 115) of staff. Flat grooms reported workplace changes as less effective (χ2 (52, n = 131) = 92.996, p < 0.001). A total of 67.2% (n = 193) of staff were positive about job security. Trainers and grooms were significantly less likely to report jobs as secure (χ2 (52, n = 287) = 75.653, p < 0.05). The findings suggest that most of the racing industry positively received changes made by their employers to tackle the pandemic, and for staff still working during lockdown, their health and safety was prioritised. Continued development of employee support structures to promote job security and workforce stability is advised, which will minimise the disruption of staff changes on the care and welfare of the horses.

Abstract (sommario):
Construction is a high-risk industry owning to several accidents that take place in construction sites. Fatalities and workplace injuries are a major issue. Construction managers concentrate on profitability as far as cost, quality, and time are concerned. Unless experts end up mindful of safety-related issues, development tasks can never reach their targets. The main aim of this paper is to review the literature that highlights the result of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices in construction sites. The research examines the impact of the implementation on the number of accidents in construction sites and the precautions that should be taken into consideration starting from the pre-construction stage. Previous research suggested that early introduction of occupational safety & health management systems (OHSMS) and elements within the project implementation is an important asset in decision-making. It aims toward the abatement of occupational hazards in the workplace. The paper explores through a literature review the root causes of construction accidents and factors causing risks in construction sites. The research explains OSHMS, and its effects, and how they can be integrated into the pre-construction stage in projects. The impact of the implementation of occupational health and safety practices at construction sites will be discussed as well. The study concluded that due to implementing OHSMS, there is a significant reduction in accidents. In order to improve security and health, safety measures should be included starting from the preparation of contract documents. It is recommended that the managers of top construction companies commit more to safety and health procedures. There is a need to provide funding for the regulatory body that oversees health and safety in the construction industry.

Abstract (sommario):
Risk assessment is an essential component of the occupational health and safety event prevention activity. The purpose of this study is to choose the most appropriate risk assessment method for hospitals. The main methods were compared. There are many assessment methods, each with its advantages and disadvantages, but none has been adapted to the specificities of hospital activity. We adapted the workplace assessment sheet from the INCDPM (National Research and Development Institute for Labor Protection Bucharest) method to the specific of the hospital units and used this method at the level of jobs, within the hospital’s departments, calculating the global risk level per job position, workplace (department), and hospital. The clinical departments global risk level exceeds the average (3.00) for all jobs, but does not exceed, however, 3.50, representing an acceptable security level. For assess the psychosocial risks we used the ELVIE method. Looking ahead, the methods should be adapted to allow both numerical presentation of the results and graphic.

Abstract (sommario):
Occupational health is a key priority for the horseracing industry, yet little research on occupational injuries exists. This study investigated the prevalence and the effect of injury in British horseracing staff during a 12-month period. An online retrospective survey was answered by 352 participants, identifying self-reported injury prevalence, injury management practices and attitudes towards workplace injury reporting. Chi Squared tests for independence were undertaken. A total of 310 (88.1%) staff reported injuries; risk factors for injury type included self-perceived job security, working hours, and perceived job control. Physical limitations, loss of confidence, workplace changes, and lifestyle implications were reported as consequences of injury. A total of 75.3% (n = 134) of staff were likely to seek time-off following fractures, but only 48.6% (n = 86) would take time-off for concussion. Attitudes towards injury management were influenced by financial circumstances, perceived staff shortages, previous injury experiences, and perceived employer expectations. The high self-reported injury prevalence could result in decreased workforce efficiency, poor physical health, and negative implications on retention and career longevity. The perception of invisible injuries, i.e., concussion, and subsequent management, should be of immediate concern to racing organizations. This paper identifies recommendations to enhance the safety and wellbeing of horseracing staff.
