Abstract (sommario):
Bernard Mandeville was not alone in criticising the charity school movement that had developed in Britain starting in late 1600; yet his Essay on charity and charity-schools is extremely provocative, especially as it regards the conditions of the poor. He criticises the selfish intentions and motives of charity schools, and inquires whether such schools are socially advantageous. This essay aims, first, to shed light on Mandeville's views on charity and charity schools, and demonstrate that such views are consistent with his moral thought. Second, this essay addresses problems inherent in Mandeville's views on how the working poor should be "managed"; what he proposes does not appear to guarantee (but rather puts at further risk) societal peace or the happiness of poor people.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study is to identify administrative challenges that negatively affect the proper functioning of charity organizations in Oman. The study also seeks to suggest some general methods which can be used to confront these challenges. The study is conducted on a sample of charity organizations’ staff consisting of 209 workers, in addition to 15 managers in eight organizations working in five governorates: Muscat, Batinah North, Al-Sharqia North, Al-Dakhelia, and Dhofar. The study identified the following challenges which charity organizations in Oman face in varying degrees: administrative planning, organization, staffing, supervision, records and reporting, budgeting and financing, coordination, leadership, decision making and organizations’ environment. The study shows that between 15–25% of the respondents in the selected charity organizations think that there are no real challenges facing the charity organizations they work for. The study proposes some recommendations that can help in facing such challenges. These include a suggestion that there should be organized efforts made by the charity organizations themselves and also by educational and social institutions.

Abstract (sommario):
Charity boxes provided in many public places today still use locks such as master locks or padlocks. The rampant cases of theft of charity boxes occur repeatedly because charity boxes are easily broken into and even transported by thieves. The absence of a double security system is an obstacle for charity box managers. Realizing the design concept of a double security system for charity boxes using several electronic components such as fingerprint sensors and methods of sending notifications will minimize the occurrence of the crime of theft or burglary of charity boxes. The security device design architecture is made using the notification method in the form of notifications via short messages using a communication device, namely the SIM800L serial module as a transmission medium for sending short message text data if irregularities are found in the charity box. This charity box security system uses an authorization system for managers who are entitled to be registered with the device in the form of a cellular number. The microcontroller control board plays an important role in processing various instructions so as to produce output information on the screen that is installed in the charity box to display access information when the device is working. Another feature of this tool is that it is equipped with a buzzer component as a warning sign in the form of a sound if an activity process is not recognized it will ring loudly according to the conditions. A security system like this will provide a solution and increase security in the storage of charity boxes so managers can feel comfortable.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper demonstrates the value of embracing digital technology in order to effect positive change in a non-governmental (NGO) charity organisation, in this case the Irish Charity Crosscause. The outcome of the research was the creation of a charity video, Crosscause: Making a Difference, to showcase humanitarian work in Ireland and Romania with a view to inspiring others to contribute in some capacity to this cause. Video is an important medium to provide connections with a wider audience, as it gives humanitarian workers and marginalised communities an opportunity to tell their story by making a compelling and evocative case to others. Visual media not only makes connections with an audience, but can also positively challenge people to consider what is happening in the world around them. The research process incorporated an entrepreneurial methodology - an Educational Entrepreneurial approach to action research-with four steps: Exploring, Understanding, Creating and Transforming, which is designed to guide practitioner-researchers as they embrace digital technology to resolve an identified need in a workplace context, including people in disadvantaged settings. In this research, there was an identified need for a charity video to link the giving in Ireland to the receiving in Romania, so that viewers could see the tangible effects of their contributions. A further aim of the research was to illustrate how volunteering can inspire solidarity among Irish and Romanian communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore empirically the dynamics by which austerity, a “moment” of neoliberal policy reform enacted through strategies of market-driven governance (MDG), provides the conditions for the insertion of capitalist-market logics into the charity sector. Demonstrating altered funding structures permits a political and socioeconomic reconfiguration of poverty, it asks what this means for charity work. Design/methodology/approach The paper draws upon data from 12 months ethnographic fieldwork in a charity in England. It explores the permeation of competition and profit as logics of capitalist-markets. Findings The paper finds that capitalist-market rationales are enacted within the organization. Charity is subordinated to business and profit permeates the site, thus changing the way that poverty is acted upon. In this context, workers are engaged in “labors of negotiation” which ultimately impede a reconfiguration of poverty into profit via their everyday situated labor. This reveals the symptomatic activities of upholding an ethos of public care in the production of charity work and within a context of MDG. Originality/value This paper makes an empirical contribution to the debate on contemporary charity working under austerity. It makes an important conceptual contribution by adding to the emerging literature on MDG (Varga, 2016); by repositioning du Gay’s (2003) analysis of public reform into alternative empirical and analytical conditions; and by building upon Adams’ (2013) work around the replacement of an ethos of public care with one of private profit.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractCharity governance is undergoing a crisis of confidence. In this paper, we suggest an alternative approach to how governance could be perceived and conceptualized by considering the ethical notions of governance embedded in religious enquiry, with a specific focus on the Islamic perspective of governance. We firstly develop an ethical framework for charity governance, utilizing insight from the Islamic perspective. Secondly, we undertake an empirical study to assess the experience of governance within Islamic charity organizations. Our theoretical framework provides a comprehensive approach to viewing organizational governance with an emphasis on governance as a mechanism for working towards social justice and the public good. However, our empirical findings reveal an ‘ethical gap’ between the ideals of the Islamic Ethical Framework and the reality of governance practice within Muslim charity organizations. We consider the implications of these findings and outline avenues for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
This study reviews the evolving role and state of risk management in Scottish charities between 2009 and 2018, with a specific focus on charities engaging in public service partnerships. It draws on data from questionnaires, interviews and charity documents. It identifies how risk management activities are organised in the Scottish charity sector in general. It also identifies how charities deal with risk in partnerships. The findings suggest that most risk management activities are implicit and sporadic, with some Scottish charities engaging in more formal practices, although none of the risk management activities extend to partnership working and reporting on risk management practices is also limited.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractRecent research on contemporary modalities of Islamic or Muslim philanthropy has focused on processes of subjectification through which givers and recipients of charity are habituated or craft themselves to an ethic of piety, social responsibility, and (neoliberal) economic virtuosity. These studies, however, have concentrated almost exclusively on those who give charity, leading to an over-emphasis on the perspectives of givers, and on their role in determining how the poor might deal with their everyday lives and imagined futures. As a result, small-scale gifting relations in which the Muslim poor may also be involved—making the poor simultaneously giversandrecipients of charity—have been obscured or erased altogether. In this article, we argue that the concerns of the poor might not always or necessarily be those of the wealthy donors of charity. By receivingandgivingsadaqaandzakat, poor and working-class Muslims in a Colombo neighbourhood imagine inclusion and belonging to the wider Muslim community in Colombo, which is not contingent upon the mediation and pedagogical interventions of charitable organizations and (middle-class) pious donors. Importantly, this imagination of inclusion and belonging comes at a time when the Muslim poor are increasingly marginalized by virtue of a (middle-class) discourse that, by framing charity as a means ‘to help the poor to help themselves’, has turned socio-economicupliftmentinto an ethical duty and, consequently, failure to improve oneself has become the symptom of wider moral shortcomings.

Abstract (sommario):
We describe emerged in the Russian Empire an organizational basis of support for the First World War invalids. The policy of charity for military invalids generated with the participation of official, public and charitable elements. We reveal the complex relationship between the main actors in this process – one of the “crown” charity committees (Special Commission of Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna), the Central bodies of the County Union and the Union of Cities, and local self-government. Using archival materials, the main guidelines for creating a war-mutilated charity system are identified. We determine the leading approaches to the architecture of the state and public system of support to former military personnel who have lost their working ability. In addition, we discuss in details the topic of war-mutilated registration, which was sup-posed to be the first stage of building a national system of care for war invalids, but it was never carried out. We also focus on the financial aspects of supporting military invalids. We conclude that the system for the war-mutilated charity could have become the first fully implemented direction of state social policy in Russian history, but it failed to realize its potential due to political contradictions between the official government and liberal associations.

Abstract (sommario):
The functioning of charitable organizations in modern economic conditions requires significant financial resources. Analysis of financial aspects of Russian charitable organizations and development of recommendations for financial mechanism improvement are aims of the paper. The main problem of the financial mechanism functioning of the Russian charitable organizations is, that the legislation refers to charity, target assistance to specific people and organizations in limited period of time. The regulatory framework should encourage the emergence of sustainable charitable institutions – organizations, which are committed to long-term work. To expand their capabilities, it is advisable for charitable foundations to implement projects, related to commercial activities, all profits from which will be directed to the working capital of the Fund for purpose of redirecting to charity.

Abstract (sommario):
The study was carried out with the goal of analyzing and studying the factors affecting the intention to donate money on social networking platforms of young people living and working in Hanoi. In the study, the authors used a combination of qualitative and quantitative research to provide a complete scale before entering into the official research. With 383 questionnaires with valid answers, all of these people have participated in online support through different social networking platforms. The results received from the survey were processed and analyzed using the supporting software SPSS 26.0 and AMOS 25. Finally, the results obtained show the importance of social networks for the effectiveness of charity fundraising in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, the research team found that only the reputation of the organization and the knowledge, as well as subjective standards of the participants in favor, indirectly influenced their intention to donate to charity through belief and attitude.

Abstract (sommario):
At the farewell of a lady. The Roermond women’s charity of Saint-Elisabeth by 1909 In the Low Countries, poor relief was primarily the responsibility of private organisations until the early twentieth century. One out of many was the Roermond ‘Sint Elisabethvereniging’, a Roman Catholic women’s charity that tried to help the urban poor in times of unemployment, illness, old age and financial worries. By 1909 the work of the Sint Elisabethvereniging was done by fifteen women. Being part of the Roermond elite, many of these ladies were related to one another. Only four of them were married, and their husbands, like the fathers and brothers of the other ladies, were almost exclusively working as legal experts (lawyers, judges and notaries). The ladies lived near to each other in the better neighbourhoods of the city. It was almost impossible for outsiders to become a member of this rather exclusive group of ladies. Charity provided them with a means of fulfilling their Christian duties and confirming their social status. Furthermore the work gave them the opportunity to meet other women at a time when women of the higher social classes were expected to stay at home. For most of the ladies their membership of the Roermond Sint Elisabethvereniging was also ‘an escape from loneliness’.

Abstract (sommario):
BENJAMIN LEOPOLD FARJEON (1838–1903) was a novelist of, at best, middling abilities who achieved a modicum of popular success working in the sentimental realist tradition. He was also Jewish, a fact that he neither avoided nor obsessed over. It is just Farjeon’s laissez-faire approach towards ethnic identity that spurs our interest today. He assumed an attitude that was only beginning to be possible in the British Empire in the middle to late Victorian period. Over the years, Farjeon has made perfunctory appearances in such familiar survey and reference materials as Richard Altick’s The English Common Reader (1957), John Sutherland’s The Stanford Companion to Victorian Fiction (1989), and Linda Gertner Zatlin’s Nineteenth Century Anglo-Jewish Novel (1981), but the only substantial piece of scholarship devoted solely to his work is Lillian Faderman’s dissertation “B. L. Farjeon: Victorian Novelist” (1967). Where Faderman provides a broad-based chronicle of Farjeon’s publications, I focus here on one aspect of his legacy — i.e., how he partook of an incipient opportunity to construct a position for Jews as Englishmen in economic terms.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractDevelopment agencies and animal welfare charities try to improve the health and welfare of livestock in the developing world by educating owners and providing healthcare. The impact assessment of these projects relies mainly upon input-related parameters (eg number of animals treated or educational lectures delivered). The aim of this study was to investigate whether animal-based parameters, such as scores for skin lesions, body condition and lameness, could be used to assess the impact of interventions by development agencies on working donkeys. A general checklist for integument assessment of livestock, developed and then tested on two British farms, was redefined for assessment of equine animals in West Kenya. In total, 346 donkeys were assessed over four days with a mobile clinic of the Kenyan Society for the Protection and Care of Animals, using 25 animal-based parameters. The checklist was easy to use: the parameters could be scored using visual assessment or palpation, and the procedure was completed in approximately 5 min per animal. The method was found to be acceptable for owners and animal health technicians, and no special equipment was required. Significant observations included a reduced frequency of leg lesions when head-tethering (as opposed to leg-tethering) was used, and a reduced frequency of foot lesions in regions previously visited by the charity. This animal-based method proved that the charity had made a positive impact on donkey welfare through owner education.

Abstract (sommario):
The spread of covid-19 throughout the world has led to an increase in global health status. Covid-19 pandemic in addition to problems in the human body can also cause stress and increase the risk of various psychiatric problems. Muhammadiyah's Business Charity at PCM Mlati currently still focuses on education and religion and has just spearheaded a charity working in the health field in the form of the klinik pratama. At the time of this pandemic, PCM Mlati members and the surrounding community had not yet received optimal mental health promotion and prevention services from health workers. Mental health is as important as physical health because if someone has psychiatric problems can cause other problems so the problem becomes very complex. The solutions offered include: early detection, health education with materials such as stress management through effective communication during a pandemic and optimizing comfort zones and mental health counseling. Early detection results show that the majority of normal / healthy mental health status is 61.11%

Abstract: Father Ibiapina’s (1806-1883) missionary action fostered changes in people’s lives and in places. With people working together in cooperation, the well known Casas de Caridade (Charity Houses) were built and several socially oriented projects undertaken. Many men and women were outstanding and loyal collaborators in this evangelical and civilizing work. Nevertheless the figure of this Brother or beatified being and his significance for the maintenance of the Charity Houses is not very well known. Letters by the Master-Father and other texts from the same period helped us to identify some of the beatified people and the functions they exercised in the institution. Our task is to try and show the valuable service carried out by these men consecrated to Charity.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background People with dementia and caregivers of people with dementia have the right to inclusion and involvement in research that pertains to them. They can bring unique insights that add significant value to research. Person/Patient Public Involvement (PPI) occurs when the public/patients work in partnership with researchers in setting priorities, planning and managing research studies, as well as in disseminating findings and putting results into practice. In line with Alzheimer Europe’s position, a dementia charity is working hard to support and build capacity for PPI in Irish dementia research. Methods The Dementia Research Advisory Team was established in April 2019 and is supported by the charity. It is a group of Experts by Experience (5 caregivers and 5 people living with dementia) who influence, advise and work with researchers across Ireland in a PPI capacity. Team members collectively developed terms of reference detailing their expectations of researchers, the charity, and their role in all PPI activities. Team members will focus on becoming active stakeholders in Irish dementia research, and the charity will support them to build their capacity to be involved through capacity-building workshops and continuous evaluation. Results This joint presentation will discuss the development, capacity building, and experiences of the Dementia Research Advisory Team. A person with dementia, will discuss the progress of the team and report on members’ experiences of being involved in Irish dementia research. They will also discuss the impact of involvement on team members, and on the research they have been involved in. Practical ‘lessons learned’ on what did and did not work well will be presented, in addition to how the Dementia Research Advisory Team has navigated challenges and opportunities for involvement of people living with dementia and caregivers in research. Conclusion Members of the Dementia Research Advisory Team represent key stakeholders in Irish dementia research.

Bennett, Roger. "Factors contributing to the early failure of small new charity start-ups". Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development 23, n. 2 (16 maggio 2016): 333–48. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/jsbed-11-2013-0173.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to establish the main causes of early failure of small recently established fundraising charities. Design/methodology/approach – Heads and ex-heads of small recently established British charities that had either shut down within two years of registration with the Charity Commission or had survived for two years following registration were surveyed to determine the sorts of issue they believed were particularly problematic at the time their charities were formed or shortly thereafter. The research combined ideas from human capital theory, organisational ecology, and the survivor principle to investigate the mortality of new charity start-ups. Information was obtained from the ex-heads of 182 charities that had been removed from the Charity Commission’s register and from 356 heads of charities that were still in operation. Findings – Participants in both groups reported that they had experienced major difficulties relating to funding, the development of plans, lack of marketing and management skills, and personal workload. Differences between the groups emerged with respect to their perceptions of problems involving competition from other charities (both for donations and for clients), internal conflict within their organisations, networking, and the need for background research. Start-ups run by people with prior experience of working in charities had a significantly better chance of survival than start-ups managed by individuals lacking such experience. Research limitations/implications – The data used in the investigation were self-reported and less than a majority of the sampling frame participated in the study. Practical implications – Prospective founders of small new charities need to recognise competitive realities and the competencies required for success before commencing operations. Government and nonprofit support organisations should arrange short work experience placements and shadowing activities for individuals contemplating starting a new charity. Originality/value – This was the first research ever to examine reasons for small enterprise collapse within the nonprofit domain.
