My title is a gloss from Everett Dirksen, the long-time, now-deceased U.S. senator from Illinois who encouraged his party “to get right with Abraham Lincoln.” As Republicans drifted away from acknowledging their partisan connection to the sixteenth president, Dirksen appreciated how Lincoln could serve as an invigorating, unifying theme for Republicans in the post-Civil Rights Era. The analogy, of course, is that suffrage history has been similarly marginalized, submerged even within the limited space given to women's history by attention to Progressive Era associations and service groups such as the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the PTA, women's literary clubs, as well as the settlement house movement and the Women's National Republican Club.

The internal service quality in an organization is a particularly important factor that determines not only the internal users (employee) satisfaction, but also their loyalty to the organization and their performance. The aim of the study is to determine the internal service quality in "Kaunas Žalgiris" football club. Methods: A qualitative methodological approach, semi-structured indepth interviews (non-probabilistic targeting). The study showed that different recipients of internal services receive services of different quality. Coaches, men's football team players, administration and service staff receive the highest quality internal services. The lowest quality internal services are received by those who do not generate income for the club - women's and youth football teams. The club should ensure that all resources are available to all football teams belonging to the club. Although "Kaunas Žalgiris" football club has created an entire pyramid for the education of young footballers, it faces a lack of loyalty from them due to quality problems of internal services provided. It is recommended that "Kaunas Žalgiris" football club solve the problems of internal service quality and develop a strategy aimed at promoting the loyalty and pride of youth teams in belonging to "Kaunas Žalgiris" organization.

AbstractDuring the 1920s, in a bid to elevate musical taste in Houston, Texas, arts patron Ima Hogg anonymously underwrote a series of public lectures on music at the Rice Institute, now Rice University. A trained musician who had spent considerable time in New York and Europe, Hogg recommended potential lecturers for the series, and her collaborator, the music-loving president of the Institute, Edgar Odell Lovett, worked to engage them. Not all of Hogg's candidates were available, and Lovett used his own contacts to supplement them. The resulting slate of lecturers was a diverse mix of musicians and scholars: Maurice Ravel, Arthur Honegger, Nadia Boulanger, John Powell, Harold Morris, George Birkhoff, and Henry Hadow. Their lectures survive in printed form in a scholarly journal published by Rice; they provide some of the most important statements about music by their authors. Hogg's patronage was made possible by an increase in her family's wealth, but her goal of public enlightenment was inspired by her family's tradition of public service (her father had been the governor of Texas) and by her longtime involvement in women's music clubs. Her model for the lectures may have been the didactic music club meeting; Lovett's was the university extension lecture directed toward a community audience. This article details and contextualizes Hogg's patronage in light of contemporary views of women's involvement in the support of music.

The background of this research is that participants often do not enter when serving on the opponent's court, lack of accuracy in hitting the ball when serving over, low level of service accuracy. The purpose of this study is to examine how effective concentration and eye-hand coordination exercises using plastic balls and tennis balls are in training the accuracy of serving on volleyball for Putri Junior Provos Pemalang.The discussion of the results of the study was carried out using a quantitative approach to the experimental two groups pretest-posttest design. In this design the sample will be divided into two groups according to the ranking of the initial test from the lowest to the highest by zig-zag or Matched Subject Ordinal Pairing (AB-BA) so that both groups have equal abilities (equivalent).The results showed that 1) There was a significant effect of the implementation of the gradual distance service exercise using a plastic ball on the accuracy of serving on the Pemalang Provos Junior Women's volleyball. This can be proven from the tcount of the experimental group 1 (7.839) with a significance of 0.001 (0.001 <0.05); 2) There is a significant effect of the implementation of the gradual distance service exercise using a tennis ball on the accuracy of serving on the Pemalang Provos Junior Women's volleyball. This can be proven from the tcount of the experimental group 2 (10.633) with a significance of 0.000 (0.000<0.005); 3) Based on the results of the N-Gain Score test, it shows that the average N-gain score for experimental group 1 (plastic ball) is 5.7138 or 25.7%. With a minimum N-gain score of 3.23% and a maximum of 7.9%. Meanwhile, the average N-gain score for the experimental group 2 (tennis ball) was 6.8220 or 6.8%. With a minimum N-gain score of 5.38% and a maximum of 8.8%.The conclusion of the study is that the application of training using tennis balls in a gradual distance service exercise is more effective than using a plastic ball on the accuracy of serving on women's volleyball. My suggestion is that the media in this exercise can be used in the Putri Junior Provos volleyball club in Pemalang.

With the opening of China's three child policy and the continuous development of social economy, China's industrial structure has changed constantly. As a new economic growth point, the maternity and infant industry has become a hot industry in recent years. New service industries such as Moon Sister and Moon Center have developed rapidly. The scientific and comfortable modern moon center is increasingly favored by young women. It is undeniable that the emergence of maternity care institutions has timely met the needs of women for puerperal care today. However, there are always many imperfections in the development of emerging industries at the time of their inception, and the Moon Club entered the mainland market late and is in the initial stage of industrial development. From the actual situation of the few existing Moon Centers, it only meets the immediate needs and hasty response, and fails to fundamentally improve and enhance the reasonable, humanized, scientific planning, design and research of Moon Centers. The space function and design style are not mature enough, and there is no deep concept to support it. It is a superficial form, so women's demand for the existing indoor space of postpartum care center has not been met. Therefore, the interior design of postpartum care center must start to change the original design thinking, no longer simply pursue the excessive exaggeration and blandness in style and decoration, but should design a warm and comfortable interior space that conforms to the consumption psychology and aesthetic psychology of newborn mothers based on emotional needs, especially for the functional care of related nursing spaces and its feasible humanized and emotional design.

ABSTRAKBerkebun tidak harus memerlukan lahan yang luas, di lahan kecil pun bisa dilakukan, asal ada kemauan untuk memulainya. Berkat kemauan itu, gagasan ini berhasil diwujudnyatakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian pada Kelompok Arisan Ibu-ibu KUB YOMAVI di Kelurahan Bello. Adapun tujuan kegiatan yaitu memberi pelatihan tentang pemanfaatan lahan sempit seperti pekarangan rumah sebagai lahan berkebun. Metode kegiatan yaitu pelatihan dan praktek percontohannya. Ibu-ibu dalam kelompok arisan yang berjumlah 12 orang ini. Dari kegiatan terbukti bahwa dengan luas lahan yang kecil hanya 4 x 5 m2 bisa menghasilkan sayur sawi yang layak dikonsumsi bahkan layak untuk dipasarkan. Dalam kegiatan ini media tanam digunakan polibag berukuran 40cm x 20cm. Sedangkan pupuk yang dipakai yaitu pupuk organik campuran sekam padi dan kotoran ayam. Semua bahan dicampur merata dengan perbandingan tertentu kemudian difermentasi selama 14 hari sampai 3 bulan. Pembuatan pupuk berhasil dilakukan dengan indikator keberhasilannya yaitu tidak berbau dan warnanya hitam, maka pupuk siap digunakan. Jenis sayuran yang ditanam yaitu kangkung dan sawi. Khusus sawi setelah disemai 2 minggu, dipindahkan ke polibag. Setelah 4 minggu sawi dan kangkung sudah bisa dipanen. Inilah hasil akhir dari kegiatan yang bisa diperoleh para ibu kelompok arisan ini, selain pengetahuan tentang pemanfaatan pekarangan rumah sebagai lahan berkebun. Kata kunci: polybag; sayuran organik; lahan sempit; pekarangan. ABSTRACTGardening doesn't have to require a large area of land, even on small land it can be done, as long as there is a will to start it. Thanks to that will, this idea was successfully realized in a community service activity for the KUB YOMAVI Women's Gathering Group in Bello Village. The purpose of the activity is to provide training on the use of narrow land such as yards as gardening land. The activity method is training and pilot practice. There are 12 women in the lottery club. From the activities, it is evident that with a small land area of only 4 x 5 m2, mustard greens are suitable for consumption and even marketable. In this activity, the planting media used polybags measuring 40cm x 20cm. While the fertilizer used is organic fertilizer mixed with rice husk and chicken manure. All ingredients are mixed evenly with a certain ratio and then fermented for 14 days to 3 months. Fertilizer making was successfully carried out with indicators of success, namely no smell and black color, then the fertilizer is ready for use. Types of vegetables planted are kale and mustard greens. Specifically for mustard after sowing for 2 weeks, it is transferred to polybags. After 4 weeks, mustard greens and kale can be harvested. This is the final result of the activities that can be obtained by the women of this lottery club, in addition to knowledge about using the yard of the house as gardening land. Kochendoerfer's work is an intriguing account of her wartime experiences and observations between 1943 and 1947, first as a member of the Women's Anny Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and then as key staff officer in the American Red Cross (ARC). After joining the ARC, Kochendoerfer became snared in the swirl of events from the preparation for D-Day in England to following the advance of allied forces eastward on the continent and finally witnessing the ultimate defeat and occupation of Germany. Furthermore, as the mission of the Red Cross expanded during the war from one of merely medical support to that of providing recreational services, Kochendoerfer obtained a position as an ARC director working closely with military officials to ensure soldiers had top-notch club facilities and outlets for morale and welfare activities.

The occurrence of criminal acts of prostitution and immoral acts in the city of Jambi is currently widespread. This can also be proven by the existence of cases of prostitution at OYO accommodation located in the city of Jambi. Even though there is Jambi City Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2014 on the Eradication of Prostitution and Immoral Acts, in reality there is still prostitution in the city of Jambi even though the local area has been closed. The aim of this research is to understand and analyze the factors that influence people to commit prostitution and immoral acts in Jambi City, obstacles in implementing the effectiveness of Jambi City Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2014 in Eradicating Prostitution and Immoral Acts in the Jambi City area and efforts to overcome obstacles in reducing the number of prostitution and immoral acts in the Jambi city area. The research method is an empirical juridical research type with a legal sociology approach and uses data sources, namely primary legal materials and secondary legal materials. The sampling technique was purposeful sampling and data collection techniques were carried out using interviews and document studies and data analysis was carried out using qualitative analysis. The results of his research are that the factors that influence people to commit prostitution and immoral acts in Jambi City are economic and lifestyle factors, a profitable prostitution business, teenagers having broken home family backgrounds and joining the wrong social groups, the existence of hotels and nightclubs or club. The obstacle in carrying out the effectiveness of Jambi City Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2014 in Eradicating Prostitution and Immoral Acts in the Jambi city area is that criminal sanctions are categorized as light and not as a coercive tool to ensnare perpetrators of prostitution, there is no special authority for the police to carry out criminal sanctions in the Regional Regulation. , there was a leak of information during the raid, the condition of the Youth and Women's Social Home in Talang Bakung was still worrying as it could become a rehabilitation place for prostitutes, there was resistance from the community around the prostitution localization to close the prostitution localization, there was foreign culture coming in such as promiscuity. An effort to overcome obstacles in reducing the number of prostitution and immoral acts in the Jambi city area is that the Jambi City Government closes down the localization of prostitution in the city of Jambi, then carries out socialization of Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2014 to the people of Jambi city, the Jambi city government and the Jambi City Civil Service Police Unit. coordinating with the TNI and Polri in carrying out raids as well as the role of the community or parents in supervising their children when using cellphones.

This paper presents the findings regarding urban, predominantly young, Aboriginal women's experiences of patronising licensed premises in South Australia. This research aimed to tap new information directly from the experiences of participants who lived in the southern metropolitan region of South Australia. It focused on their experiences of socialising at licensed premises such as pubs and clubs, locally, and in the city of Adelaide. A qualitative research design within the critical social Scientific paradigm was applied using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. The recommendations developed from the findings, and the final community report, were developed collaboratively with participants and other Aboriginal women from their local community. Consistent with the experiences of other young non-Aboriginal women in South Australia, as reported by the chief investigator of this study, the findings of this research show that Aboriginal women try to enjoy socialising with friends and family in licensed premises such as pubs and clubs. However, the Aboriginal women were constrained by frequently experiencing racism and injustices when they tried to enter, or when inside, pubs and clubs. Being accused of stealing, prevented from entering or being expelled from venues, racist comments and being subjected to physical violence, conflict with bar and security staff and non-Aboriginal patrons, as well as lack of safety, were some of the issues these Aboriginal women have experienced in licensed premises in urban and suburban South Australia. This research now offers recommendations from the women that call for important changes in policy and service provision that can improve the conditions of Aboriginal women when they are visiting licensed premises.

This thesis examines how the relationships between women, inside and outside the international women's organization for professionally working women – Soroptimist International – is informed by proximity and distance, which orientates the organization in the direction of a multiculturalism informed by imperial feminism. Focus lies on the organizations use of terms such as “sister” and “professional woman”, and the imagined benefits and responsibilities of being a soroptimist. The thesis is centered on interviews with members from Soroptimist International Sweden, which is seen as a microlevel of the international organization. By interviewing members and comparing the statements with some of the official documents produced by the organization, I also examine the relation between policy and practice. Drawing on the affect theories of Sara Ahmed regarding emotions and bodily orientation; postcolonial perspectives on transnational feminism, sisterhood and solidarity; and anthropological perspectives on transnational women's network, I argue that the orientation of Soroptimist International is informed by white middle-class heterosexual women. When working for women's rights as human rights it is furthermore based on a UN discourse, which also orientate the organization in a universally western way. Furthermore, I also show how the network of Soroptimist International is end oriented, which means that its information and knowledge exchange is centered around its members and the expansion of the network, instead of advocacy making on behalf of women that are non-members. This leads to the conclusion that if Soroptimist International wishes to reorient away from its feminist imperialist and multiculturalist elements, it needs to engage with a praxis-oriented solidarity concept. This means obtaining a multifaceted communication between its local and global levels, as well as seizing the many different partial perspectives existing inside as well as outside the organization.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)This study examines the essential features of women’s experiences as members of a service association. It uses a qualitative method to understand how women make meaning from their membership in an all-female association and a mixed-gender association. The experiences were examined in comparative contexts. The study finds three common features in each association: joining, volunteering, and leading. In the mixed-gender association, women also experienced a process of assimilating into membership activities. The study provides scholars and association practitioners insights into the complex blend of members’ personal and professional interests with implications for membership recruitment and retention.

Within the U.S. there is a growing interest in the case of female adolescents being coerced into the sex industry (Bernstein, 2010; Estes & Weiner, 2001; Soderlund, 2010; Williams and Frederick, 2009). This interest, which emerged due to U.S. involvement in the international trafficking phenomena and grassroots organizing, has resulted in a movement to end commercial sexual exploitation of children (also known as "child trafficking)". Feminist activists have mobilized around this issue seeking recourse for youth who have been victims of exploitation. This thesis presents a study of a prevention/early intervention program, the "Girls Coalition," founded for adjudicated girls who are deemed "high risk" for commercial sexual exploitation. The Youth Resource Center, a non-profit organization, began the Girls Coalition in order to prevent exploitation by empowering the youth to better their lives. While not an openly identified feminist organization, the Girls Coalition does espouse feminist goals and its mission emulates feminist processes. Through qualitative methods my study explores how the staff understand their role in the lives of the youth they serve as well as the organization in which they work. Findings reveal themes centered on feminist management and organizational functioning, which includes the processes and dynamics present within the running of the organization. Results also reveal themes that include how participants enact ethics of care and empowerment of the youth whom the Girls Coalition serves.Graduation date: 2012

Recovering Bacon’s valorization of error can shed light on his epistemology as a whole, and even on that of research more generally. Bacon is often known popularly as having established a scientific method to direct inquiry efficiently towards reliable knowledge and useful ends. In the period, however, experimentation already entailed husbanding resources and serving the useful ends of household management. By contrast, Bacon extended the length and sophistication of investigation in ways that deferred immediate use and that advised investigators to pursue bizarre and often resource-intensive approaches. Bacon supported what we would now call curiosity-driven research by encouraging investigators to wander in the pathways of error. Notably, however, he discussed error not in his interpretation of the myth of Daedalus, whose labyrinth commonly symbolized error, but rather in his reading of the myth of Proteus in which the investigator provokes matter (Proteus) into a state of error so that matter and its investigator might struggle together. For Bacon, rather than something to be escaped by following the clue of Ariadne, error was a state in which the human had to be immersed. In this way, Bacons reading of the myth of Proteus did gender experimentation, as Carolyn Merchant has argued, but not in the ways that Merchant claimed. By rejecting the useful and efficient forms of experimentation practiced by women within the household, Bacon made experimentation into a gendered, ongoing struggle through the valorization of error.

Abstract This chapter begins by looking at the formation of the Virginia Slims Circuit, which provided women tennis players a viable league for consistent competition and allowed them to make livelihoods through their sport. Meanwhile, Althea Gibson would spend the rest of her life cobbling together a livelihood through gigs. These include being the sports consultant for the Essex County Park Commission; the teaching professional and program director at Valley View Racquet Club; and the new national director and technical advisor of Pepsi’s Mobile Tennis Program. Gibson also served as the State Athletic Commissioner in New Jersey. She was the first African American nominated to serve in that position and the first woman, too. The chapter then considers Gibson’s support for the women’s rights movement and her candidacy for the New Jersey State Senate. Neither Gibson’s physical fitness nor her political platform were enough to win the State Senate race.

Abstract This chapter focuses on Althea Gibson’s professional golf career, which roused her spirit from the depths of disappointment brought on by the failure of her pro-tennis career. The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) was the only professional sports organization for women, offering regular tournaments, prizes, and purses. By playing on the circuit, she could do what she had always wanted: play sports for money. The chapter then considers African Americans’ relationship with golf, the last American sport to admit Blacks on the elite level. Black women had played golf across the country for decades, forming clubs of their own and competing in events organized by the United Golfers Association (UGA), which established a women’s division in 1930. Despite this feature, Black women still faced sexism and barriers to being made to feel as if they fully belonged in the association. Gibson thus earned positive press in the African American media as she embarked on her golf career. Disappointment, though, soon followed for Gibson as her golf career did not match the success that she had known in tennis. The chapter then looks at her marriage with Will Darben, begun in 1965, and the publication of her second memoir, So Much to Live For, in 1968.

Abstract This chapter examines how becoming the first Black champion at Wimbledon and Forest Hills and being one of the most famous Black women in the world brought numerous opportunities for Althea Gibson. Yet all too often the opportunities also revealed people’s judgment of her as a woman who lived with little regard for ideas about what was normal for a person of her race and gender and in the rarefied country-club sport that she played. The chapter then looks at Gibson’s opposition about turning professional, before considering her singing career. Called Althea Gibson Sings, Gibson’s album consisted of a dozen standards with lyrics characterized by longing, loss, and fears, and unrequited love. Finally, the chapter recounts how Gibson defended her titles at Wimbledon and Forest Hills. She viewed her successful defense at Wimbledon as a way of making a case about her place in sports generally and in the annals of tennis history specifically.

Abstract This chapter examines the continuing evolution of Frances Willard’s views on woman suffrage by the end of the 1880s. Along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, Willard played key roles in establishing the International Council of Women and the National Council of Women in 1888. Serving as inaugural president of the National Council of Women, Willard helped forge a broader movement of women’s clubs that emerged by the end of the decade. The chapter also explores tensions between Willard and leaders of the woman suffrage movement who objected to Willard’s insistence in tying together suffrage and temperance with support of the Prohibition Party. It also explores Willard’s deepening progressivism through the influence of Edward Bellamy and his popular 1888 novel, Looking Backward.

Born into a free black family in the early nineteenth century, Josephine Silone Yates was a pioneering woman faculty member at the historically black Lincoln Institute (now University) in Jefferson City, Missouri, where she headed the Department of Natural Sciences. Yates later rose to prominence in the black women’s club movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, serving as president of the famed National Association of Colored Women (NACW) from 1901 to 1905. Josephine was born in 1852 in Mattituck, New York, to Alexander and Parthenia Reeve Silone. She was their second daughter. Her maternal grandfather, Lymas Reeves, had been a slave in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, but was freed in 1813. Lymas owned a house in Mattituck, and Josephine’s parents lived with him. 1 Josephine’s mother was well educated for the time, and she taught her daughter to read and write at home. Josephine’s earliest and fondest memories were of being taught to read from the Bible while snuggled on her mother’s lap. Her mother made her call out the words as she pointed to them. Josephine began school at age six, where her teachers immediately recognized her preparedness and advanced her rapidly through the elementary grades. At the age of nine, she reportedly studied physiology and physics and possessed advanced mathematical ability. Silone also advanced her writing career at the age of nine, by submitting “a story for publication to a New York weekly magazine. Though the article was rejected for publication, she received a letter of encouragement, which increased her ambition to succeed.” Josephine’s uncle, Reverend John Bunyan Reeve, was the pastor of the Lombard Street Central Church in Philadelphia. Because of his interest in the education of his niece, he convinced his sister, Parthenia, to send Josephine at the age of eleven to live with him in Philadelphia so that she could attend the Institute for Colored Youth directed by Fanny Jackson-Coppin. It was probably felt that Josephine’s education would progress better under the mentorship of Jackson-Coppin.

In the fall of 2019, the research club changING started as an outreach program in the Cluster of Excellence SE2A. While the cluster deals with interdisciplinary research topics to explore technologies for sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation, the associated research club offers students from the 10th grade onwards the opportunity to gain insights into engineering. The target group here is primarily young women, who are heavily underrepresented in this career field. The research club is experience-oriented and offers high school students the opportunity to explore engineering, its systems, technologies, applications, and social and cultural significance by participating in different projects at various engineering institutes in the Cluster. During their four years of participation in the club, which is voluntary, students are challenged to discover, create, construct, and solve problems. In the process, students learn different engineering concepts and skills. Currently, three batches (75 highschool students) actively participate in the program, accompanied by engineering Bachelor students who serve as mentors. This paper presents the structure of the research club which is based primarily on theories of the emergence and development of individual interests and self-efficacy expectations. A well-known model depicting the development of individual interests is the four-phase model. This model is considered the basis for the structure of the research club program. In this paper, the most important factors in the set-up of the research club and the expected results as well as the many lessons learned are presented.

ABSTRACT The study aims to investigate the performance in the discipline Women’s Singles among Bulgarian and foreign badminton players. Thirty matches - semi-finals and finals of international tournaments and state championships in badminton in 2020 and 2021 were studied. The contingent of the study was 5 Bulgarian elite badminton players training at Badminton Club “Aneta Yaneva NSA”. In addition, the playing efficiency of 10 foreign badminton athletes in the top 10 of the World Ranking List for 2020 - 2021 was studied for reference and comparison. Using the author’s methodology, 15 game indicators (strokes) were separated into three groups: attacking, defensive, and neutral, as well as the technical elements: service, meeting, and the realization efficiency of each individual indicator are derived. The mathematical-statistical methods of variation and alternative analysis are applied to process the obtained data. The results show a statistically significant difference in the game efficiency of the attacking type of shots (77% for the world elite badminton players compared to 35% for the Bulgarian players); defensive, respectively 7% of won plays by the foreign players compared to 46% by the Bulgarian badminton players; in the case of the neutral type of shots there were no significant differences in the two groups studied.

[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 16] Aim/Purpose: The aim and purpose of this study is to understand why there is a dearth of faculty of color ascending to senior levels of leadership in higher education institutions, and to identify strategies to increase the representation of faculty of color in university senior administrative positions. Background: There is a lack of faculty of color in senior level academic administrative position in the United States. Although there is clear evidence that faculty of color have not been promoted to senior level positions at the same rate as their White col-leagues, besides racism there has been little evidence regarding the cause of such disparities. This is becoming an issue of increased importance as the student bodies of most U.S. higher educational institutions are becoming increasingly more inclusive of people of various racial and ethnic backgrounds. Methodology: Qualitative interviews were used. Contribution: This study adds to the research and information made previously available regarding the status of non-White higher educational members in the U.S. by contributing insights from faculty of color who have encountered and are currently encountering forms of discrimination within various institutions. These additions include personal experiences and suggestions regarding the barriers to diversification and implications of the lack of diversity at higher educational institutions. Given the few diverse administrative or executive leaders in service today in higher education, these personal insights provide seldom-heard perspectives for both scholars and practitioners in the field of higher education. Findings: Limited diversity among faculty at higher educational institutions correlates with persistent underrepresentation and difficulty in finding candidates for leadership positions who are diverse, highly experienced, and highly ranked. This lack of diversity among leaders has negative implications like reduced access to mentor-ship, scholarship, and other promotional and networking opportunities for other faculty of color. While it is true that representation of faculty of color at certain U.S. colleges and programs has shown slight improvements in the last decade, nationwide statistics still demonstrate the persistence of this issue. Participants perceived that the White boys club found to some extent in nearly all higher educational institutions, consistently offers greater recognition, attention, and support for those who most resemble the norm and creates an adverse environment for minorities. However, in these findings and interviews, certain solutions for breaking through such barriers are revealed, suggesting progress is possible and gaining momentum at institutions nationwide. Recommendations for Practitioners: To recruit and sustain diverse members of the academic community, institutions should prioritize policies and procedures which allocate a fair share of responsibilities between faculty members and ensure equity in all forms of compensation. In addition, institutional leaders should foster a climate of mutual respect and understanding between members of the educational community to increase confidence of people of color and allow for fresh perspectives and creativity to flourish. Where policies for diversification exist but are not being applied, leaders have the responsibility to enforce and set the example for other members of the organization. Assimilation of diverse members occurs when leaders create an inclusive environment for various cultures and advocate for social and promotional opportunities for all members of the organization. Recommendations for Researchers: Significant research remains on understanding barriers to the preparation of faculty of color for leadership in higher education. While this research has provided first-hand qualitative perspectives from faculties of color, additional quantitative study is necessary to understand what significant differences in underrepresentation exist by race and ethnicity. Further research is also needed on the compound effects of race and gender due to the historic underrepresentation of women in leadership positions. At the institutional and departmental level, the study validates the need to look at both the implicit and explicit enforcement of policies regarding diversity in the workplace. Future Research: Higher education researchers may extend the findings of this study to explore how faculty of color have ascended to specific leadership roles within the academy such as department chair, academic dean, provost, and president.

In September 1997, the Population Council and Lusaka’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) launched a 15-month study to identify and explore the range of issues relating to the introduction of emergency contraception (EC) within a developing country context. The study allowed clinic-based family planning providers to accumulate enough first-hand experience to be able to identify strategies for overcoming difficulties associated with the introduction or delivery of EC services. One issue on most participants’ minds was the need to expand the delivery of EC services toward young women, especially out-of-school women, who are harder to reach. Participants recommended that future research activities look beyond school-based health facilities and focus on institutions such as pharmacists, peer counselors, youth clubs, community organizations, or even sports associations. The findings of the 1997 UTH study on EC indicated the kinds of facilities young people were likely to reject, but provided little indication of what types of outlets they might prefer. As noted in this report, the present study was designed with that objective in mind.
