Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to trace the history of women's activism in Pakistan, as well as the policies of the Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N) Governments (1988-1999). This period after the revival of democracy following the military government is significant in understanding women’s activism as well as the policies of two prime ministers with diametrically opposed ideological orientations. Explaining this movement's various expressions is necessary to comprehend its various phases. This study will help to identify the significance of specific historical circumstances, power structures, and national and international policy dynamics in shaping the women's rights movement in Pakistan. This study critically examines women's rights activism during the four terms of democratically elected prime ministers and how they responded to women's rights aspirations for equal status for women in society. This historical analysis is necessary to determine whether contemporary activism is a continuation of the past or distinct in terms of goals and modalities.

Abstract (sommario):
Both Begum Rokeya's earlier and Arundhati Roy's more recent voices have advocated for women's freedom in essentially the same ways. Although critics have examined how they raise their voices against women’s exploitation, the current situation of women’s suffering when comparing Rokeya and Arundhati’s dreams is not shown. In order to demonstrate a gap in their research, the study compared the conditions of women in Rokeya's literature with the state of current society by discussing Arundhati's works. This essay is written using Begum Rokeya's Sultana's Dream and Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things as primary sources. My attempt in this paper is to demonstrate how Begum Rokeya's vision of women's independence is still a dream by referring to relevant scholarly articles and interpreting the works of Arundhati Roy.

Abstract (sommario):
Today, as non-mainstream stories appear as exhibition contents in history museums, it can be seen that there is a need for research on the subject and expression method. Therefore, with the goal of providing basic data on women's museums as a preliminary study, the probability of the original data and expression were examined, focusing on the exhibition of women's museums. Chapter 1 raises the background of the study and the need for the aforementioned preliminary investigation, and Chapter 2 examines the meaning and characteristics of the women's museum. In Chapter 3, the basic status, exhibition system, direction, and operation direction of each institution were investigated for the Bonn Women’s Museum in Germany, Gender Museum of Denmark, and Merano Women’s Museum in Italy. As a result of the study, it was found that the composition context that began with the grassroots movement affects the direction of operation. Second, as it expanded to the issue of “gender and society” rather than “women versus men” the scope of women's museum acceptance also expanded, which seems to affect the expression of exhibition contents. Third, we found the need to review women's things. Finally, all three institutions had something in common that they used the historicity of space to richly convey women's stories and create values by discovering historicity and meaning on their own.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to oversee the practice of gender injustice that affects rural women's lack of substantive political participation in Bondowoso Regency. During the Legislative General Election in 2014-2019 and 2019-2024, women's political participation was complimentary for the registration and administrative requirements rather than substantial involvement. This situation continues to happen even after the release of regulations that require the fulfillment of a quota of 30 percent of women’s representation in a political party. This study uses a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this study also uses a feminist approach. By using that feminist approach, this study aims to discover (1) how rural women in Bondowoso respond to political engagement and (2) how religious arguments are interpreted concerning the role of women in political engagement. This study found that (1) women’s involvement in politics is high in quantity rather than quality. Women’s political participation does not directly guarantee their active role in the political world. Instead of making a maximum contribution to the development of politics, women’s participation is stigmatized. (2) One circumstance that hinders women’s participation relates to the misogynistic interpretation of religious teachings in Bondowoso’s rural society. It refers to patriarchal domination in understanding the concept of leadership in Islam that eventually stigmatizes women’s involvement in politics.

Abstract (sommario):
Islam regards men and women as equals with equal rights. However, there are major differences between men and women. This research will look into gender concerns in Islamic education. The study's goal is to assess Islamic education from a gender perspective and learn more about how Islam is taught. This type of inquiry is known as library research. To assess all of the study's data, the researchers used descriptive analytic approaches. Before investigating gender perspectives, the researchers gathered information on Islamic education. The results of this study show that men and women have similar perspectives on the role of women in Islamic education. When a society is peaceful, the issue of gender discrimination can be handled. The study discovered no differences in men's and women's intelligence or ability for thought, and as a result, women had an equal place in Islamic education to men in terms of gender representation.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, in Indonesia, many religious institutions serve as a forum for women's empowerment, service, and advancement, in the form of educational institutions, Islamic boarding schools, Taklim Council, socio-religious organisations, and women's NGOs. All of them have a concern for improving women's standard of living. Therefore, the recitation is a religious institution deeply rooted in Islamic society, one of which is the JN Surabaya Taklim Council. This study aims to determine women's consumption practices in the JN Surabaya Taklim Council. The type of research chosen in this study is qualitative research with a form of qualitative descriptive research. In this study, the JN Surabaya recitation council members were research informants. The conclusion of this study shows that women's consumption practices in the Salafi Taklim Council are studied as objects or behaviours that appear, as values, and meanings, until they are continued as 'signs'. Consuming signs as a hyperreality and hyperreality occurs through a process preceded by simulacra, which becomes the simulation process's vehicle.

Abstract (sommario):
Women’s empowerment conduces economic growth and is crucial for empowering women. Economic freedom means that people can take economic actions independently. Yet, women remain disadvantaged in developing countries like Pakistan. The current study analyses how economic freedom fosters women’s empowerment in Pakistan. We employed time series data for 1990-2021. We employed an index of women’s empowerment (WEI) and the Women's Business and Law Index (WBLI) for economic freedom. WBLI is based on 8 distinct indicators that include diverse aspects of a woman’s life. After unit root testing, we used the ARDL approach followed by the Bound test. The long and short-run empirics have confirmed the association of women’s empowerment and economic freedom in Pakistan. There is a positive and statistically significant relationship between them. A significant ECT term with a negative sign further confirms the long-run association. Women’s mobility, women’s decision to work, rules and laws for equal pay, legal barriers to marriage for women, women’s decision to work after childbirth, restrictions for registering a business on women entrepreneurs, discrimination in the division of property and regulation for women’s pension are the factors that still impede the absolute economic freedom of women in the society.

Abstract (sommario):
This research paper aims to shed light on the reality of women's economic empowerment in Algeria as a goal of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for the year 2030. Algeria has realized the importance of integrating and empowering women socially, culturally and economically, so it worked to provide the legal environment supportive of the positive participation of women in economic activities. This is in addition to the international agreements that it has ratified to achieve the empowerment of women and activate their role in development. The study sought to answer the main question, which revolves around the challenges that women face in leading their own projects by analyzing the obstacles that women face and limit their economic contribution to society, as Algeria includes the largest percentage of women engineering graduates in the world, with a rate of 48.5% of the total engineering graduates. In the country, however, men still dominate the profession itself. In order to answer this problem, the deductive approach is relied on, with its appropriate description and analysis tools, to study the legal and financial system to support women’s entrepreneurship, confront the obstacles that prevent them from achieving their success, and put forward proposals that contribute to their pioneering leadership in the business world. The study reached a set of results, the most important of which is that women in Algeria face many social, administrative and economic difficulties in the field of entrepreneurship. The authorities must work to promote innovation and creativity in women's entrepreneurship projects and provide legal and financial support to develop their creativity while finding innovative ways to market and develop women's entrepreneurship projects

Abstract (sommario):
Women and men are equal by law in Bangladesh, but the societal reality shows a different picture. By illuminating the obstacles women face when entering and choosing an engineering and science program and what enables women to overcome obstacles, this thesis aims to answer why there are fewer women than men at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).     This thesis was a field study conducted at BUET. Questionnaires was handed out to get a broader perspective of women’s experiences within science and engineering while the interviews aimed to get an in-depth perspective of women’s own experiences being in science and engineering. The empirical data has been analysed using the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), the domestic responsibilities model and previous research about social norms within science and engineering and female networks. The thesis concludes that there are two main explanatory factors why there are fewer women than men studying science and engineering at BUET. Those factors are the social construct that science and engineering programs are more appropriate for men and that families do not have a beneficial Socioeconomic Status (SES) to allow women to study. The main factor enabling women to study and pursue an engineering and science program is family support.

The issue of women's underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States has recently gained significant interest and accordingly, a great increase in the body of literature on this topic. A review of the literature reveals that the issue is a complex phenomenon with a myriad number of causes. These causes may be socioeconomic or cultural influences, or they may be specific events in women's educational or occupational timeline such as first-year college and university STEM classes. This thesis will use the following two themes to weave through and present the existing body of research: (1) STEM fields are riddled with gender stereotypes, which make many women uncomfortable and feel like they do not belong; (2) a gender confidence gap exists in STEM fields and discourages women from entering or further pursing STEM. An examination of gender composition of STEM fields across different countries validates these two themes as well. Finally, this thesis will end with a discussion of several potential strategies for increasing the representation of women in STEM.

Abstract (sommario):
Gender plays an important role in access to the ICTs and Internet. Even when both genders have almost equal access to the ICTs and online services, or similar literacy rates, women have a lower rate in technology related education, employment, income, and in social activities than men. This thesis focuses on the existing digital gender gap by identifying its key factors and trends and studying the role of Internet and ICTs in bridging this gap. In addition, to suggest improvements to empower women in the developing countries and especially in Iran. A qualitative research method was adopted and semi-structured interview with 5 Internet users who were purposely chosen, was conducted. The data were analyzed and interpreted with the help of Lichtman's 3C method. This research study has examined the possible gender digital divide among users of ICTs and Internet in Iran and by making use of the existed secondary data. The empirical findings are discussed and compared to the reviewed literature, which resulted to an arising framework for a better understanding of digital gap among women. This research gives an overview about the digital divide, with a focus specifically on the challenges women face in accessing the ICTs and Internet in this region. Current gender disparities and discrimination in Internet use are outlined and the obstacles hindering women’s access to the technology world are described. At the later stage, the research has a look at the potential opportunities for women’s participation in a global digital society along with a consideration of the initiatives that have been developed in order to mitigate the gender inequity in Iran.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, society has achieved a better quality of life; this has been possible thanks to scientific and technological advances. Among the advances that have allowed us to move forward is, without a doubt, the development of the vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The method used for the synthesis of this vaccine was developed by Ugur Sahin and Öezlem Türeci, founders of BioNTech. Yes, behind the scientific development of greatest impact and relevance in recent years are a man and a woman. This scientific development was possible thanks to both of them, and here it is important to highlight the quality of women in science related to seeing issues from another perspective. Therefore, the union of their strengths and their differences made it possible to have a vaccine that makes it possible to return to life without confinement, without fear of going out, and with the possibility of enjoying it. Thus, the role of women in science is not only valuable, but fundamental to solve the problems that afflict us today. In this context, I can only thank and congratulate the women who today, thanks to their training, discipline and commitment, are giving us this wonderful work of science. I am sure that more challenges will come, but always counting on them, we will come out ahead. My most sincere appreciation and admiration.

Abstract (sommario):
The book examines gender roles, gender inequity, and the impacts of both unintentional and purposeful efforts to undermine women’s equal treatment in the United States, documenting what women have faced in the past and still face in America today. Although women’s rights is a worldwide issue, this book examines how in the United States, an alleged “war on women” is still occurring. Are there only forces opposing women’s equality that aim to subvert women’s advancement, or are defensive strategies employed as well? What has been the offensive response from women and supportive groups of women? Is there actually substantial evidence of a “war on women,” or is the idea primarily political rhetoric? Are the actions and behaviors contributing to gender inequality intentional or unintentional? In this unique collection, experts from multiple disciplines analyze the U.S. women’s rights movement, developments, progress, and obstacles. The chapters extend the analogy of this fight for equal rights with a war to document how women’s struggle for gender equality is simultaneously a health issue, a political issue, and a wider issue of social justice—a formidable challenge in which women’s lives are sometimes literally at stake and at risk. The book’s contributors and editors take the unique angle of eyeing the fight for equality on the same level as a war, analyzing this “war” on historical/social/cultural levels (the “battlefield”); identifying policy, political, and legal issues (“major battles”); and explaining how to best fight on personal or individual levels (“skirmishes”). The coverage includes current federal and state initiatives that have fueled concern that women’s rights are under continued assault. All of the nearly 162 million women in the United States—and their family members, regardless of sex—are affected by the issues addressed in this book. Features • Demonstrates how existing cultural roles and historical context in the United States are sufficient to result in gender-based inequality even without the purposeful, direct efforts to undermine women’s equal treatment • Covers many different aspects of inequality, both obvious and subtle, such as occupational sex segregation; workplace harassment; gender bias in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education; reproductive rights and health of women; the glass ceiling and glass cliff; intimate partner violence; and sexual violence • Illuminates the multilayered nature of gender inequality to inform a multifaceted approach to dealing with it on a governmental (societal) level and on an individual level

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn 2016, the United Nations (UN) Member States adopted a decision on the role of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in encouraging girls and women to be leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). This decision poses a special challenge for many sectors in society and posits unique opportunities for women’s leadership in higher education institutions (HEIs). This chapter opens by presenting views on overcoming gender segregation in STEM. The roles of women in leadership positions in the higher education STEM research areas of a large multidisciplinary university in a Nordic country are explored. The unique paths in which four of these women have progressed in their profession, position, and promotion of equality through their diverse and multiple roles within their HEI are examined. From this collection, intertwined opportunities in assuming leadership in the promotion of gender desegregation in STEM are identified on a micropolitical levels. The chapter concludes by elaborating institutional strategies and synergies for overcoming gender segregation in higher education STEM fields from the perspective of leadership. This chapter ends with an annexed declaration useful for local policy development and practical action.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractScience, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Higher Education (HE) helps foster students’ motivation to continue studying and cultivates students’ regard for the role of science and technology in society. The gender gap in STEM HE can reduce through institutional efforts; however, the underrepresentation of women is prevalent. There have been efforts to research and implement strategies to increase the number of people attending STEM fields with a specific action to attract and retain women in these areas. Hence, the purpose of this research work is to carry out and show the results of a Systematic Mapping (SM) related to how HE institutions aim to address the gender gap in STEM education through research and educational innovation. The SM focused on published work from 2011 to 2021 indexed in Web of Science or Scopus. Findings show the state of knowledge for an essential topic: reducing the gender gap through guidance and retention strategies to attain completion. Furthermore, descriptive results give a general overview of the area, relevant trends, and other analytical evidence that provides an in-depth understanding of HE institutions’ needs. We conclude that the retention of women studying STEM HE has become an essential issue worldwide universities have addressed increasingly during the last decade.

Women earn less than 25% of undergraduate computer science (CS) degrees and hold less than 25% of CS jobs (National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, 2019; U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021). However, they earn over 50% of all undergraduate degrees and hold over 50% of professional jobs in other disciplines. Despite decades of research demonstrating the issue of women's underrepresentation in the CS industry, the problem persists to the detriment of both women and the broader society that the CS industry serves. To explore the reasons for this persistence, in this chapter, the authors examine existing scholarship on women's underrepresentation in the CS field to argue that understanding women's views of CS provides a platform for designing and implementing effective educational programs that better align with the goals of bringing more women into CS.

Abstract (sommario):
While battling great odds in terms of discrimination and bias, women within the United States have made valuable contributions to the workforce. Now that the second decade of the 21st century is upon us, women have come into all facets of the workforce, finding a niche in Internet Communications Technology (ICT) as well as within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which should allow women more of an opportunity to pursue occupations. However, it seems that women are lagging in this part of the workforce within the constructs of science, technology, education, and mathematics also known as STEM. This glass ceiling, or gender barrier, may make matters worse in terms of reporting these kinds of women's issues because these reports are often written by men. In addition, the ideas and perceptions of masculinity and femininity have been scrutinized and analyzed in this chapter, and it is not difficult to realize the differences in gender based on biological functions.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite the growing number of women and minorities in STEM occupations, underrepresentation of Black women in the STEM workforce persists as they hold only 2.4% and 2% of science and engineering jobs, respectively, though they make up 6.4% of the total population. Despite these numbers, the African American women who are in STEM fields have been shown to excel at exceptional rates. The purpose of this chapter is to examine existing data, strategies, and models that address social determinants of professional STEM attainment for Black women. This chapter will explore the importance of intersectional identities and how this influences Black women's success in STEM fields in addition to understanding how counterpaces function to enhance persistence and advance the success of women of color in STEM fields. Understanding the non-academic factors that affect minority women's persistence in STEM allows for a broader conversation around implications for findings for academic and social support programs.

Abstract (sommario):
Livestock farming plays a pivotal role in global food production, but it also generates significant waste that poses environmental and societal challenges. This chapter explores strategies for efficient livestock farm waste management, emphasizing their pivotal role in promoting sustainability. India, as a prime example, exemplifies the dual challenge and potential solutions. It is both the largest milk and cow dung producer, with immense quantities of waste. Biogas plants, utilizing dung, emerge as a game-changing technology, addressing waste while producing valuable energy. Waste types vary from dung to leftover feed and urine. Management methods encompass manual and mechanized solid waste removal, as well as lagoon systems for liquid waste. Waste utilization technologies include composting, vermicomposting, bio-methanization, bioenergy, and animal feed. These methods not only mitigate waste but also offer economic benefits and resource conservation. Farmers stand to gain significantly from biogas technology. Additional income, nutrient-rich digestate, closed nutrient cycles, and reduced odors contribute to improved livelihoods. Women's workload is lessened, and health and hygiene conditions are enhanced. Societal and environmental benefits extend beyond the farm gate. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy generation, and job creation enrich communities. Moreover, biogas adoption addresses waste, environmental management, and energy production. In conclusion, innovative waste management practices in livestock farming hold transformative potential. Through technologies like biogas, agriculture can transition into a sustainable, eco-friendly paradigm, benefiting farmers, society, and the planet. This chapter underscores the urgent need to embrace these strategies, forging a resilient and greener future.

Abstract (sommario):
A gender aware project brings transformation in the society and recognizes the contribution of both men and women in the development process. Empowerment indicates a situation whereby both men and women take control of their life, gain skill, build up confidence and march together towards a self-reliant society. Hence, to make the agriculture development projects, gender sensitive, a proper communication strategy on the understanding of the different roles and responsibilities, needs and concerns of both, needs to be developed. All the development projects should aim for gender integration in its project areas for better project output. Women’s involvement in agriculture and allied activities along with socio-political participation catalyses the empowerment process. Hence, a concerted and coordinated approach is necessary to bring a change in the society related to gender. Women’s equality and empowerment should be taken on board as an important aspect of agriculture management. Adoption of appropriate gender friendly technologies, capacity building training, awareness along with proper communication strategy would certainly pave a new path towards agriculture development.

Abstract (sommario):
The discourse surrounding women's empowerment initiated several decades ago in India. This topic is a commonly employed phrase among policymakers, politicians, social activists, and scholars. Despite the continued discussions and efforts, the condition of women still reflects a distressing state. India, classified as a developing country, aspires to transform into a well-developed nation. Despite launching initiatives like Start-up India and Make in India to advance the nation, numerous obstacles continue to hinder the progress of women in India. Despite these challenges, women have achieved significant exposure and are now active in various sectors such as defense, agriculture, engineering, and medicine. However, to ensure the comprehensive development of all women across the nation, the concept of Women Empowerment becomes pivotal. Women Empowerment revolves around providing every woman in the country with the means to achieve independence across all societal domains. This entails raising awareness about their rights, enhancing their overall capabilities, and ensuring their physical security. The primary objective of this paper is to elucidate the Women Empowerment schemes in India.

Abstract (sommario):
International research has shown that in most countries, there are few women studying towards information technology (IT) careers (Galpin, 2002), and there is much research, particularly in the United States (U.S.), United Kingdom (UK) and Australia into why this is the case (Gürer & Camp, 2002). This article considers the situation in sub-Saharan Africa and focuses on women’s involvement in the generation and creation of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in sub-Saharan Africa, as opposed to ICT use in sub-Saharan Africa, which is considered elsewhere in this volume. There are a number of aspects to the generation and creation of ICTs: how women are involved in this process as IT professionals and how they are educated for these careers, as well how technology can be used appropriately within the specific conditions of sub-Saharan Africa. ICTs will be considered in the broadest sense of the word, covering all electronic technologies, from computers and networking to radio and television. Women’s participation is important: The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Gender Caucus (www.genderwsis.org) has identified women’s involvement in the design and development of technology as well as technology management policy, as key principles for the information society. Marcelle (2001) emphasizes the necessity for African women to become involved in technological and scientific areas, including “computer science, software engineering, network design, network management and related disciplines” (Marcelle, 2001, para. 15) to create an information society appropriate for African women. The diversity of those involved in design leads to higher-quality and more appropriate technological solutions (Borg, 2002; Lazowska, 2002). Background Sub-Saharan Africa has a population of 641 million, young (almost half under 15) and rural (35% urban). Significant problems are undernourishment, poverty and HIV/AIDS (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), 2004). All the countries in sub-Saharan Africa are classified as developing countries. Some countries are relatively wealthy, such as Mauritius, South Africa, and Nigeria, but have large wealth disparities within their populations. Women in sub-Saharan Africa are expected to focus on the home, they have less access to education and health, and their contribution to family and community is not valued (Huyer, 1997).

Abstract (sommario):
The situation of women in the engineering world has different aspects. On the one hand, it can be stated that women are well received in certain areas of the technological world, and they are very integrated into academia. In other areas, such as the world of industrial business, recognition is more complex being those less open environments. Last century, the woman who broke the taboo in Spain was the mayor of Bilbao and the first industrial engineer graduated in Spain in 1912, Pilar Careaga. By means of her public presence, her message could reach the general society, but as something exceptional. At the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao, the first female Industrial Engineer was Pilar Ipiña, graduated in 1965. Fifty-three years had passed. Women in Engineering, more than a century later, remain a clear minority. While it is true that the presence of women in engineering schools is socially fully accepted, it is no less true that many young women dismiss the possibility of approaching that world from an early age. The lack of benchmarks seems to be a clear factor. Many of the engineers who are being interviewed in the search for ideas to motivate girls and young women, end up seeing lacks of references when asked about it. While the experience of being a woman in such a traditionally male field has lights and shadows, reflect of what can be seen in different referenced studies, a positive message must be transmitted, as this has been the experience of both engineering students and workers in academia or in the business world. Proposing solutions to smooth out the differences in numbers between men and women in the world of Engineering and Science requires knowing the causes, in order to be able to carry out actions that lead to collecting women's talent and with the appropriate training give it all the value that can achieve, both in the improvement of society as a whole and in the personal development of each of them. The aim is to achieve real equal choice between women and men and put everyone at the service of a better society. Equality is theoretically achieved, but it can still be improved.

Abstract (sommario):
Technological innovation and scientific progress are important components for improving human condition and economic success. Therefore, a workforce that includes a critical amount of experts in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) domains is needed. Evidence supports that males and females often present differences in their performance and preferences towards some STEM courses and occupations, especially engineering. Specifically, the number of women that decide to pursue careers in the engineering field is relatively low. One possible factor contributing to this gender gap that has gained a lot of interest recently is gender stereotyping and distinct gender roles among societies. Segregation between women and men’s societal roles result in psychological gender differences, emerging from early childhood, and can later affect career choices. Additionally, different gender related standards imposed by the society drive women towards activities, majors and careers perceived as more “feminine”. Another way gender stereotypes contribute to these differences is by affecting the development of cognitive skills that are hugely involved in engineer learning and thinking. Spatial abilities are part of such skills that play an important role in academic and occupational achievements in STEM domains, is strongly correlated with engineering education and can, on average, be less developed among women relative to men. In this paper we are going to review the literature on the influence of gender stereotypes on women’s spatial ability development, and how this may later prevent them from pursuing a career in engineering.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite numerous research studies that have examined why women are underrepresented in engineering education programmes, the phenomenon is still not fully understood, and no effective general solutions have been found. In this context, analysing women’s experiences in engineering education can provide insights regarding the evolution of the students’ learning strategies and socialization processes as well as contextual factors that influence their choice to persist in or leave their courses. This paper explores the pertinence of enhancing phenomenological analyses conducted in engineering education research by incorporating sociological perspectives, drawing on sociological studies that explore the relationship between gender, STEM education and persistence in STEM courses. The aim is to contribute to building a conceptual framework that, on the one hand, captures lived experience in engineering education and, on the other hand, analyses the social settings around engineering itself, i.e., the objectively significant circumstances, that condition female students’ attitudes, behaviours, and expectations towards persisting or not in engineering courses. Conclusions suggest the conceptual framework around subjectively meaningful experiences, proposed by Alfred Schutz, who followed the phenomenological school of thought initiated by Edmund Husserl, might be useful in understanding not only (a) the representations of the subjective social world for women in engineering education (that induces feelings of identification, security, symbolic values, and ultimately social actions), but also (b) the intersubjective social system that structures daily life, legitimizes behavioural patterns, assigns roles, and defines group membership along education in engineering. Expanding engineering education researchers’ conceptions of phenomenology, to consider more of the structural issues that influence women’s experiences and choices, can help generate increasingly meaningful research findings.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates the representation of women researchers and artists in the conferences of the International Community for Auditory Display (ICAD). In the absence of an organized membership mechanism and/or publicly available records of conference attendees, this topic was approached through the study of publication and authorship patterns of female researchers in ICAD conferences. Temporal analysis showed that, even though there has been an increase in the number of publications co-authored by female researchers, the annual percentage of female authors remained in relatively unchanged levels (mean = 17.9%) throughout the history of ICAD conferences. This level, even though low, remains within the reported percentages of female representation in other communities with related disciplines, such as the International Computer Music Association (ICMA) and the Conferences of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR), and significantly higher than in more audio engineering-related communities, such as the Audio Engineering Society (AES).

Abstract (sommario):
The gender divide for women in the engineering domain in academia is still very large today, even though most institutions are committed to changing this. Although there are slow improvements in the number of women working in academic positions in Engineering, the Netherlands, in particular, is still lagging badly behind the rest of Europe with women making up only 17.6% of all full professors in the engineering domain and for 25.7% in the entire academic domain. This is despite many efforts across the board to improve this situation. The situation is even worse in the field of Aerospace Engineering and within this field, the lack of progress is not unique to the Netherlands with similar issues being reported in the United States of America and wider afield. This paper reports on research on the capacity building among women required within the aerospace engineering domain to reach the commonly defined critical mass percentage of 30% of women full professors using metrics on career progress and on as well as labour market data on the career development of Aerospace graduates to show where potential new interventions can be made.

Abstract (sommario):
Early career experiences provide the foundation for career progression and inform career choices and decisions. For women in the engineering profession, positive early career experiences have been linked to persistence and retention within the profession A recent focus on early careers within engineering has provided insight into early career role types and related competencies, competency and capability gaps experienced by novice engineers, and their perceptions of meaningful engineering work. There is opportunity to diversify and contextualise this understanding by exploring early career experiences of women working within the engineering profession, and by considering the influence of gender on early career experiences and decisions. This paper reports on an empirical investigation of the career experiences of 22 women engineers in senior roles within engineering organisations in the Australian context. Phenomenological and temporal analysis of their career reflections provides evidence of three early career patterns of varied sequence and focus. The influences shaping these career paths are described. By making explicit possible, diverse early career paths, determinants and outcomes, this paper aims to continue to bridge the engineering education-practice gap and to contribute to greater equality, diversity, and inclusion within the profession.

Abstract (sommario):
Skill gaps are a key constraint to innovation, hindering productivity growth and economic development. In particular, shortages in the supply of trained professionals in disciplines related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) may weaken the innovation potential of a society. A wide gender gap has persisted over the years at all levels of STEM disciplines throughout the world. Although the participation of women in higher education has increased, they are still underrepresented. Latin America is no exception. The untapped potential of fully trained and credentialed women represents an important lost opportunity not only for women themselves but also for society as a whole. Although there is growing recognition of the importance of the issue in developing countries, Latin America faces a lack of information that prevents researchers from deepening the understanding of this phenomenon and policymakers from designing effective interventions. This note aims to contribute to the academic and policy debate in the region by reviewing the main factors put forward in the literature to explain gender inequalities in recruitment, retention, and promotion in STEM disciplines and by providing evidence of the scope and results of policies directed to obtain a better gender balance in the sector.
