Abstract (sommario):
The Shuaiba Industrial Area (SIA) is located about 50 km south of Kuwait City. It accommodates most of the large-scale industries in Kuwait. The total area of the SIA (both eastern and western sectors) is about 22.98 million m2. Fifteen plants are located in the eastern sector and 23 in the western sector, including two petrochemical companies, three refineries, two power plants, a melamine company, an industrial gas corporation, a paper products company and, two steam electricity generating stations, in addition to several other industries. Therefore, only 30 percent of the land in the SIA's eastern sector and 70 percent of land in the SIA's western sector is available for future expansion. Presently, industries in the SIA generate approximately 204,000 t of solid waste. With future development in the industries in the SIA, the estimated quantities will reach 240,000 t. The Shuaiba Area Authority (SAA), a governmental regulatory body responsible for planning and development in the SIA, has recognized the problem of solid waste and has developed an industrial waste minimization program. This program would help to reduce the quantity of waste generated within the SIA and thereby reduce the cost of waste management. This paper presents a description of the waste minimization program and how it is to be implemented by major petroleum companies. The protocols employed in the waste minimization program are detailed.

Abstract (sommario):
Innovation is the main driving force to promote national technological progress. It is of great significance to explore the optimal path to improve innovation efficiency by using the qualitative method and neural network prediction model to promote the high-quality development of the national economy. This study focuses on high-tech industries in the eastern, central and western regions of China; a factor-dependent research framework for innovation efficiency improvement in high-tech industries is constructed in China. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method (QCA) is used to explore multiple paths to enhance the innovation efficiency of China’s high-tech industries. Then, a GA-PSO-BP neural network is used to construct an optimization model for the enhancement path of technological innovation efficiency, which clarifies the optimal path for the enhancement of innovation efficiency of high-tech industries in the eastern, central and western regions of China. Finally, innovation management strategies for high-tech industries are presented with regional features. The study finds that none of the individual conditions are necessary to promote the innovation efficiency of China’s high-tech industries, and only the linkage effect of the factors can achieve the goal of improving the innovation efficiency level of China’s high-tech industries. There are four configuration paths to improve the innovation efficiency of China’s high-tech industries, which are: “Multinational company (MNC) innovation—economic development—government support”; “MNC innovation—government support”; “economic development—government support”; and “economic development”. The characteristics of regional heterogeneity make differences in the optimal paths of innovation efficiency improvement in high-tech industries in eastern, central and western regions of China.

Founded in 1959, the Dengchuan Milk Products Factory was both an individuated enterprise and an asset in the development of western Yunnan. This article examines the six-decade transformation of Dengchuan from state-owned industry, to officially promoted dragon head, and finally as a wholly owned subsidiary of the New Hope Group. Even as the company enjoyed greater managerial independence, it has relied on the government for materials, market access, and the development of its dairy base, a relationship that only recently reversed as the company responded to demands for capital investment and productive upscaling. Albeit on a much smaller scale, this relationship is comparable to the business groups that dominate sectoral development in strategic industries.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early twentieth century numerous primary extractive industries constructed company towns on the resource frontiers of North America. Company directors hoped that massive capital infusion in remote areas in the form of planned towns would secure a much-needed skilled workforce and generally increase returns. The pulp and paper town of Corner Brook in western Newfoundland is a significant, but largely neglected case in point. This paper details the paternalist and utilitarian motivations of companies for single-industry community construction at this time. More importantly, however, it offers a new and critical approach to the issue of single-industry community development. Early multinational companies sought to secure a place "on the ground" through comprehensive planning and community administration. At the same time, residents of Corner Brook, though constrained by dependence on the sole industry, negotiated their own physically and socially distinct community in a variety of ways. The global-local nexus of company planning, resident response, and change introduces a complexity into the study of company towns that are generally portrayed in terms of rigid top-down company exploitation of a "captive" workforce.

Abstract (sommario):
On April 22, 1903, the qing court ordered zai-zhen, a Manchu prince; Yuan Shikai, the most powerful Chinese Governor-General of the realm; and Dr. Wu Tingfang, the former Chinese minister to the United States, to compile a commercial code. The edict charging them with this responsibility noted that “of the many government functions, the most important is to facilitate commerce and help industries” (Li 1974a:210). On January 21, 1904, the newly created Ministry of Commerce (Shangbu) issued China's first Company Law (Gongsilü)The Company Law was the first modern law drafted by the Imperial Law Codification Commission, whose work was part of the Qing government's reformist “new policies” in the wake of China's recent humiliations at the hands of Japan and the Western powers. In giving highest priority to enacting a law governing the organization of commercial companies, the Qing government had several interlocking objectives.

Abstract (sommario):
The rate of failure of western multinationals in China in consumer industries is very high. IKEA is a classic case of a western multinational that started off with many problems and yet, persisted, adapted and succeeded in the market in China. The level of market orientation which has been deployed by the company is very high. This has been made possible through a long-term view of the market, which was not sophisticated. It had to engage in educating consumers, reposition itself and engage in organic knowledge development, while adopting a long-term view of the market. When it comes to western multinationals, the case study of IKEA shows that they must be prepared to reposition themselves, must develop value propositions that are suitable for the market and implement strategies which will actually work in the foreign market, rather than standardization in a rigid manner, that will surely result in failure. The regional differences within China must also be considered seriously and western multinationals must be prepared to engage in hyper-localization in some elements of the marketing mix.

Abstract (sommario):
Sport, tourism, and recreation, like many other areas of life, are influenced by environmental factors, including climate. Climate is one of the major factors determining the living conditions on our planet, which determine the functioning and behavior of all organisms. Therefore, this poses the question: Are global climate changes seen by ordinary people? If so, how are they seen and how do they affect the various domains of life, in particular, sport, tourism, and recreation? The aim of the pilot research was to determine the impact of global climate changes (observed in the public media as well as being in the public consciousness) in the area of western Norway (WN) on sport, tourism, and recreation. Pilot research was conducted in the summer and autumn of 2015 using a diagnostic survey on the internet. The research tool was a questionnaire survey. Respondents came from two groups: 61 employees and entrepreneurs in the industries of sport, tourism, and recreation in WN and 32 people either actively partaking in sport and recreational activities or visiting the region as tourists. Interviewees noted that climate changes have already occurred in the nature of western Norway. However most of them are not prepared for these changes even though they believe that the majority of the changes will only grow and intensify. For example, some of the researched companies have already been forced to take certain steps in relation to the companies functioning e.g., company reorganizations. The expected transformation in nature caused by global climate changes are changing the behavior of athletes, tourists, residents, representatives of the authorities, and economic entrepreneurs who make their living from tourism, recreation, and sport. In the future, Norway may turn out to be no longer as attractive as it is now for these people.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: To manage growth opportunities effectively and to make a significant impact on superior long-term performance, it is necessary to analyze firm value and diagnose its determinants. Increasing profit, providing prosperity to the company's stakeholders, and improving company value are the goals of every company's business. Purpose: The paper aims to build a model of the company's optimal value by assessing company performance based on financial statement analysis of European companies over the period 2015-2020. Study design/methodology/approach: The impact of financial indicators such as financial leverage, profitability, size, liquidity, growth, and asset tangibility on company value was thoroughly considered. The empirical research was founded on a sample of 158 Eastern and Western European companies, generating 948 observations. Panel regression analysis was conducted. Findings/conclusions: The obtained results revealed that debt-to-assets ratio, return on equity, and assets tangibility have a significant adverse effect on company value, whereas the return on assets and firm size have a significant favorable effect. The obtained conclusions should serve as a beneficial tool for the strategy of reaching the targeted market company's value and ensuring the company's future viability by the market. Hence, stakeholders could assess the perspective of the future company's development and strengthen the importance and influence of financial variables on the company's value. Limitations/future research: The research limitations, which are also opportunities for future research, are aimed at the investigation of company value indicators at the level of individual European economies or industries. One should look at the company's value factors before and after the Covid-19 pandemic and consider a longer time in the company's business. Other financial determinants that affect the value of the company could be considered, and the company value could be measured by some other indicators. Also, the influence of non-financial determinants on the company value could be researched.

Abstract (sommario):
Under the authority of the Millar Western Forest Products Ltd. (MWFP) Forest Management Agreement, the company has the right to harvest trees, grow trees, manage the forest and plan activities that assure forest productivity and industry profitability without jeopardizing the quality of the environment. Thus, as part of obtaining provincial government approval, the company has to submit a Detailed Forest Management Plan that includes a comprehensive assessment of the environmental implications of forestry operations and the mitigation of impacts. Forest management planning for environmental sustainability will become more and more difficult with increased land use pressures from other industries, agriculture and recreation. Therefore, the planning process will require increasingly more sophisticated modelling tools to identify and avoid significant impacts. The Forest Watershed and Riparian Disturbance (FORWARD) project proposes a hybrid modelling tool that relies on inexpensive remote sensing data, with few ground truthing requirements, to model streamflow, suspended solids and nutrients in streams on the Boreal Plain. Incorporating modelling tools into the MWFP planning process provides MWFP additional strategies to operate in an environmentally sensitive manner. Thus, the company can maintain an allowable cut, while ensuring that ecological and physical values are considered. Abstract (sommario):
This study presents the application of an integrated water management strategy at two large Australian manufacturing companies that are contrasting in terms of their respective products and wastewater generation. The integrated strategy, consisting of water audit, pinch analysis and membrane process application, was deployed in series to systematically identify water conservation opportunities. Initially, a water audit was deployed to completely characterize all water streams found at each production site. This led to the development of a water balance diagram which, together with water test results, served as a basis for subsequent enquiry. After the water audit, commercially available water pinch software was utilized to identify possible water reuse opportunities, some of which were subsequently implemented on site. Finally, utilizing a laboratory-scale test rig, membrane processes such as UF, NF and RO were evaluated for their suitability to treat the various wastewater streams

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe industrialisation of the footwear recycling processes is a major issue in the European Union—particularly in view of the fact that at least 90% of shoes consumed in western economies are ultimately sent to landfill. This requires new AI-empowered technologies that enable detection, classification, pairing, and quality assessment in a viable automatic process. This article discusses automatic shoe pairing, which comprises two sequential stages: a) deep multiview shoe embedding (compact representation of multiview data); and b) clustering of shoes’ embeddings with a fixed similarity threshold to return sets of possible pairs. Each shoe in our pipeline is represented by multiple images that are collected in industrial darkrooms. We present various approaches to shoe pairing—from fully unsupervised ones based on image descriptors to supervised ones that rely on deep neural networks—to identify the most effective one for this highly specific industrial task. The article also explains how the selected method can be improved by hyperparameter tuning, massive increases in training data, and data augmentation.

I would like to determine the evolution of wealth concentration in main cities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by comparing the data from different benchmark years. Moreover, I will analyze whether the Gini coefficient value indeed refers to the communities who are at a threshold of economic growth, and what is the correlation between the value of the coefficient and the town or city’s economic situation. Also, it is worthwhile to ponder the question: is there any correlation – noted by both Jan Luiten van Zanden and Guido Alfani – whereby the larger the town/city, the more visible the inequalities. Finally, how do the towns/cities of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth compare to those in Western Europe.

Abstract (sommario):
By the early spring of 1962, all of western Washington was abuzz with Seattle’s upcoming world’s fair—the first to be held in the United States since 1940. On April 21, with the push of a button in the Oval Office, President John F. Kennedy released a swarm of balloons 2,300 miles away in Seattle. Seconds later, warplanes from the naval air station on nearby Whidbey Island roared over the city, thrilling the throngs of eager fairgoers. Over the next six months, nearly ten million people passed through the turnstiles, among them Elvis Presley, to film his forgettable It Happened at the World’s Fair (1963). Officially titled the Century 21 Exposition, the fair boasted exhibits from twenty-seven countries and a range of attractions. But with futuristic highlights such as the Monorail and Space Needle, it aimed above all to celebrate Seattle’s new modern identity. It seemed the perfect theme for the time and place. Just two months earlier, John Glenn had become the first American to orbit the earth, and the Cold War space race was in full swing. The Boeing Company, with its headquarters and three manufacturing plants in and around the city, was a leader in cutting-edge commercial and military aviation. If the 1962 world’s fair didn’t launch Seattle into the twenty-first century, it certainly signaled the city’s move away from its nineteenth-century extractive economy. But these changes came at a cost. Seattle’s maritime industries had been declining since World War II, even as Boeing jobs and freeway construction hastened flight to the suburbs. By the early 1960s, city leaders were pushing for urban renewal. The Seattle Times led the way, publishing a special feature in October 1961 that called for a “downtown for people.” To be sure, the Century 21 Exposition provided a short-term boost, drawing visitors to the fair site at the base of Queen Anne Hill and creating the new tourist hub of Seattle Center. But two months later, an event drew visitors to the waterfront itself.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Contending against the Depression while benefiting from the New Deal, working-class organizations advanced. Many workers in the now-beleaguered telegraph industry formed militant industrial unions, notably, the Communist-led American Communications Association (ACA), which obtained a charter from the surging, socially conscious Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). In 1937, this small union was awarded sweeping jurisdiction over the telegraph industry, the radio industry—and much of the telephone industry. Supported by the CIO, ACA grew, got Western Union’s inhouse company union legally decertified, and gained a foothold at Western Union’s New York City hub. Through political action and with rank-and-file support, ACA worked to equate labor’s interest with the wider public interest, as its tenacious struggle to fend off a job-destroying telegraph industry merger demonstrated. The merger finally occurred (1943), and a 1944 representation election at Western Union produced a lackluster result. ACA then turned full attention to the telephone industry.

Abstract We are experiencing a far-reaching change in the automobile industry that is comparable in its historical consequences to the diffusion of the Taylorist-Fordist regulation model decades ago. Criticism of Taylorism-Fordism has grown since the beginning of the 1980s, especially, and the demand for greater emphasis on human resources and the self-regulation of work by the workers themsevles has been experiencing an enormous upswing in the public discussion in Western countries. One hears of the “new plant revolution” (Lawler 1978). A mixture of ideas on questions of work motivation, the design of work (in both social and technical terms), and industrial democracy that have been developing over decades have now come to fruition and been translated into textbooks for personnel policy (e.g., Milkovich and Glueck 1985), as well as for industrial engineering and production engineering (e.g., Barnes 1980). Titles such as Improving Productivity and the Quality of Worklife (Cummings and Molloy 1977), Productivity Gains Through Worklife Improvements (Glaser 1976), and High-Involvement Management (Lawler 1986) signal a new way of thinking among managers.

Abstract Social scientists generally agree that in the last decades the Western world has undergone a deep process of socio-economic restructuring, which has led to the decline of the traditional ‘Taylorist’ system of mass-production and to the establishment of what has been called the ‘post-industrial society’. The former, identified as ‘mass production’ or ‘the Fordist system’, was based on principles such as the rationalization of labour, vertical integration, the minimizing of the required general education and training, the hierarchical control of company branches, and the application of Taylorist principles to work (Boyer 1989).

Abstract Israel is closely related to Western Europe in its telecommunications system. Its dynamics of institutional change are similar, and are therefore included in this study. For a long time, Israel’s telecommunications system was that of the classic postal-industrial complex, with the state PTT nurturing the electronics industry in close collaboration with the trade unions. The government, meanwhile, regarded telecommunications as a source of revenue. This system led to dissatisfaction because the expansion and quality of the network were inadequate for the rapidly modernizing society. In 1982, it was decided to spin off telecommunications from the Ministry of Communications and to establish the independent operating company Bezeq. Bezeq (also often spelled Bezek) is still a state monopoly, albeit a regulated and part-private one, but its service orientation and performance have greatly improved.

The premiere of Desert Venture, a colour film promoting the transformative endeavours of the Arabian-American Oil Company (ARAMCO) in Saudi Arabia, is a prime example of how “ephemeral authorship” can be highly relevant to the study of industrial film. Desert Venture was promoted at its premiere and in other contexts as the work of Robert Yarnall Richie, a photographer and filmmaker with a well-established professional reputation within the oil industry. ARAMCO suggested that Desert Venture was the creative product of a “frontiersman” who exemplified many qualities outlined in Frederick Jackson Turner’s “The Frontier in American History” (1893), and in 1930s “nation-building” Westerns, mirroring the celebration in the film itself of the new American oil frontier in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract (sommario):
This concluding chapter summarizes key themes and presents some final thoughts. It argues that the cities of refuge examined in this book were intended to be sanctuaries from the modern world, but they became a source and stimulus for that world. Because of their compact nature, physical isolation, and social homogeneity, they had the purity of a control group in a laboratory experiment. And those variables that they were testing were precisely the ones that concerned the emerging modern world, such as the nature of labor, property ownership and means of production, and housing of industrial workers. The lessons of these societies of five hundred to a thousand members could be applied to much larger communities, or to countries themselves. In this way, these frail and marginal experiments, although they struggled at the fringe of the Western world, were at the very hub of modernity.

Abstract (sommario):
As many economies embrace global supply systems, there is a pressing need to focus on reducing the supply chains' adverse environmental impact. Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM), is an alternative idea that combines supply chain effectiveness with environmental considerations. GSCM is a powerful tool for distinguishing or separating a company from its competitors, and it can have a substantial impact on the company's success strategy. It is becoming more significant for Sri Lankan SMEs as they become more attentive to corporate social responsibility and the obligation to follow the terms of eco-friendly policy. Recently, it was found that there are many issues in the area of supply chain to the balance of biodiversity specially from the Small and Medium sector enterprises in Sri Lanka. Though various researchers have highlighted the penetration of GSCM practices in large-scale manufacturing industries, the present study is aimed at exploring the awareness of green supply chain management practices in Small and Medium Scale Industries (SMEs) in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to evaluate the current state of Sri Lankan Small and Medium Enterprises in the context of Green Supply Chain Management Practices (GSCMP). This research study takes a qualitative approach rather than a quantitative one. The study depends on primary data, collected through face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with seven Small and Medium enterprises in North Western Province, Sri Lanka. Interviews were conducted with managers of a set of SMEs in the Sri Lankan market in an attempt to meet the main objectives of this research. All the targets are located in North Western Province, as a matter of determining the geographical coordinates of the target. This study follows a thematic analysis approach to analyze the data. Highlighted findings were such that insignificant attention from SMEs in Sri Lanka is being paid towards the environment. SMEs were found not to be willing and seriously ready to take action so as to help in reducing environmental threats. Lack of customer awareness, Lack of knowledge & experience training to personnel in Green supply chain management, Lack of top-level management commitment in adopting green supply chain management, Suppliers or vendors are reluctant to adopt Green supply chain management practices, Cost of Implementation for Green supply chain management and Lack of support & guidance from regulatory authorities are the main reasons for lower level adoption to the green supply chain management practices among Sri Lankan SMEs. Various suggestions were offered in this study and proposed solutions according to the identified insufficiencies.

Abstract (sommario):
1999 marks an important anniversary for Enbridge Pipelines Inc. of Canada and its U.S.-based affiliate, the Lakehead Pipe Line Company Ltd.: for 50 years we have been the primary link between the large oil production areas of western Canada and major market hubs in the U.S. midwest and eastern Canada. In retrospect, this strong history of success is chiefly due to thorough and logical planning and choice selection in all aspects of company endeavors. At Enbridge, as in countless other firms in a wide-range of industries, decision making was often the product of expert consensus and years of solid experience in dealing with similar situations. This approach has worked well for Enbridge and our stakeholders for five decades, as evidenced by the reliability, efficiency, and safety record of our pipeline system. However, as the millenium nears, we are increasingly finding formalized processes that integrate quantitative models and qualitative analysis helpful in planning and execution for both the short- and long-term. Several broad trends at the root of this movement include the heightened pace of change; the increasingly complex web of relevant factors; the growing magnitude of the consequences associated with sub-optimal decisions; the need for thorough documentation; and the apparent benefits of a framework that enables objectivity and consistency. In short, an approach that completely and systematically evaluates the multitude of dynamic factors that affect the ultimate outcome of the matter at issue is necessary. Although the term “risk management” is now often used to describe this process, Enbridge — along with many other responsible firms in the pipeline operating and other industries — has always practiced the underlying principles. This paper addresses the background of “risk management” in both the Canadian and U.S. pipeline industry, as well as accepted theory. It also encompasses the progression of risk management at Enbridge Pipelines, up to and including current initiatives. The usefulness of risk analysis, risk assessment, and risk management tools will be discussed, along with the overriding necessity of a well thought-out process, firm corporate commitment, and qualified expertise. Much of the focus will address the ongoing evolution and maturity of a comprehensive and well-integrated risk management program within the Enbridge North American business units. The criticality of maintaining focus on the core business function — in this case, pipeline operations — will also be addressed. In addition, past learning’s as well as future opportunities and challenges will be reviewed.

Abstract (sommario):
Contractors can add value for their clients when they effectively manage operating risks within their areas of core competence. General Electric Company of Libya (GECOL) had operated its mature gas turbine generating plants at maximum output with severely constrained maintenance budgets for years. GECOL prolonged operation of many of its facilities supplying critical industrial and commercial loads until material failures shut them down. In addition, facilities under construction suffered from a lack of technical due diligence and quality assurance scrutiny. This paper covers the loss-of-load risk management techniques recommended following a Willbros assessment of GECOL’s major combustion turbine generating facilities. The assessment was completed immediately prior to the recent regime change and resulted in recommended strategies for managing new construction and outage work under existing maintenance budget constraints. Plants assessed included Zawia, Khoms, Tripoli South, Western Mountain, Benghazi North and Zewitena.

Abstract (sommario):
The study is a logical continuation of the study of the modern development of digital transformation in the economy of the Khabarovsk Territory in comparison with the average Russian development. At the same time, the regions of the Far East have their own specific difficulties in the development of the "Digital Economy". In this study, an attempt is made to compare the strategic goals of the development of the "Digital Economy", modern processes of digital transformation and such an important component of it as "Integration 4.0" - the fourth stage of evolution in industrial production associated with the "industrial Internet", digital production, intelligent components, including the collection of large amounts of data in many geographical areas, cyber-physical systems, remote monitoring and maintenance. "Industry 4.0" helps to accelerate production processes, increase its efficiency, improve the quality of goods (products of production), reduce the cost of delivery, tracking production chains, etc. In the industry of Western countries, Industry 4.0 standards have already been developed and implemented in production management, the basis of which is horizontal and vertical integration of production. International standards are developed for industries that use computer algorithms to monitor and control physical things, such as equipment, robots and vehicles. All this ensures a high level of transparency and control over the activities of the organization. At the present stage, there are excellent opportunities for the development of Industry 4.0 in Russia, but there are also difficulties, overcoming which are significant directions of the digitalization processes of the modern economy.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A prediction method of dangerous points resulting from dynamic erosion was studied by combining Computational Fluid Dynamics and application cases. CFD numerical simulation software was used to simulate conditions of real process in industry. Considering the factors like geometry, flow velocity, flow direction, different erosion results in various situation were exampled and analyzed. Working conditions were sorted out and related sample graphs were made and indexed. This prediction method can reveal flow law of internal flow field and flow field distribution. Hence, critical points caused by dynamic erosion can be found and sensor-layout plan for online inspection, monitoring and management can be introduced. The safety in the use of industrial pipelines can be guaranteed. This method had been applied on pipelines of an oil and gas company in western China. A series of studies regarding their erosion rates and trend predictions were done based on actual situation on site. The technical route for applying this method was explained in detail. The corrosion mechanism and calculation method for this case were concretely stated. The prediction results and influencing factors of erosion parts were stated and the significance of using above-mentioned prediction method is declared.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The current critical situation of the world economy pushes the companies to make themselves adaptable and to change their usual rigid behaviour in order to survive globalization of the market, to face the competition of the so called low cost countries (LCCs) and to overcame the current financial crisis. For the western companies, the possible way to face the movement of production to the LCCs, is to invest and increase the technological level of their products by means of effective R&D. This is even more valid for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and is particular valid for the power generation sector. This paper addresses the policies adopted by the Public Administrations in the different countries in order to support the companies. The Public Administrations have the interest to support the companies not only in order to promote their own growth but, above all, in order to support the development of the territory where the company is located with the growth of the job numbers and the increasing of the subsuppliers activities. A review of the financial instruments available for companies in order to obtain financial help for research and innovation is provided, advantages and disadvantages are discussed. The focus is placed to the energy sector. An industrial case study is shown, related to a thermal spray shop dealing with gas turbine components, where the efficient and effective use of research allows the set up and the development of the company and also contributes to the surrounding market.

Abstract (sommario):
The chemical industry has an important position within Slovakia. In 2022, total industrial production reached 10% of Slovakia's GDP, which according to Sario (2022) is 7.79 billion. €. On the territory of the Slovak Republic, it is concentrated exclusively in cities with a developed transport infrastructure. The aim of the paper is an idiographic analysis of the spatial relations of chemical industry subjects in the Nitra self-governing region with regard to selected localization factors, i.e. transport infrastructure, raw materials and settlements. In relation to the selected location factors, it is evident that all enterprises are located in cities, to a greater extent in medium-sized cities, near oil pipelines, gas pipelines and railway lines. Duslo a.s. is a leading chemical company of international importance. Among its most important partners are the advanced Western European countries of Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands, as well as Russia. The war in Ukraine caused the termination of these relations and the transfer to other markets. According to the growth rate, the most important market is in the category of technical products with the Netherlands, France, Spain as well as Hungary. In rubber products, the highest export is to the Czech Republic and Belgium.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, the world is facing major changes. Research and development of innovations in new technologies, the rapid pace of implementation of these innovations and especially digitization and automation, play a major role in shaping the future world. Technological innovations promise the transformation of the world we live in all its dimensions. However, in order for the benefits of innovation to be adequately exploited, it is necessary for us as a society to adapt to the coming changes. We must also keep in mind that these changes come at a time previously marked by uncertainty, turbulent changes and hyper competitiveness. The development and implementation of new technologies in business is motivated by a number of technical and economic reasons: improving the quality of finished products (machining, etc.), increasing productivity and reducing the share of work (assembly process), increasing the degree of homogeneity of product quality in all production processes related to the application of robotic technology, increasing the level of safety, reducing labor engagement in routine and reproducible processes, minimizing total production costs and maintenance costs of the device in the production process, all with the purpose of adequate responses to competition challenges and increasingly stringent customer requirements. Although the concept of Industry 4.0 is already widely used in developed countries, it is a relatively new concept in the Western Balkans, including Bosnia and Herzegovina. Most company managers understand the benefits of "smart" production and are familiar with new trends in the industry, intend to gradually introduce smart solutions, methods and technologies, and only a small number of companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina currently implement the concept of Industry 4.0. The paper presents the results of research on the application of Industry 4.0 technologies in all branches of the economy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and especially the representation of Industry 4.0 in small, medium and large enterprises. Detection of awareness of certain groups about the concepts of Industry 4.0 was performed, and the research method itself is based on an online survey.

Abstract (sommario):
Within a Joint Industrial Programme (JIP) with 12 partners, including inspection companies, engineering companies, end users and a notifying body, the reliability of the replica technique for the assessment of creep damage in welded joints has been assessed. The programme was initiated where significant differences in the interpretation of replicas were addressed and replication was characterised as a not a reliable tool. It is curious that for the preparation and interpretation of replicas persons do not need to be qualified, although a specific expertise is necessary for a proper preparation and interpretation. There are also no international or national certifying bodies. Companies have their own standards. For other N.D.E. methodologies certain levels of competence are always required. Within the JIP the practical work was performed in “Workshop” sessions and 6 inspection companies were involved, covering more than 50% of the replica activities in Western-Europe. For a realistic approach the replication activities were performed on creep damaged welded ferritic, martensitic and austenitic components and not on small creep specimens etc. Starting with the individual company procedures for replica preparation and damage assessment, unreliable results were obtained with an unacceptable scatter. The main source for the scatter was the damage assessor and the method of replica preparation was not. With a new procedure, developed within the programme and accepted by all the companies, the scatter has been dramatically reduced to an acceptable level. Finally the programme resulted in a guideline for the preparation and damage assessment of replicas of ferritic and austenitic welded joints. It also includes flow charts to distinguish creep damage from other types of damage.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The current critical situation of the world economy pushes the companies to make themselves adaptable and to change their usual rigid behaviour in order to survive globalization of the market and the current financial crisis. A large quantity of people entering into the market created a sudden economic earthquake: the needs of goods and their way of production have changed with a subsequent unbalancing of supply and demand. The so called low cost countries (LCC) can offer a significant amount of goods at extremely low prices, with a high capability to “copy” the non-protected technologies. As consequence, it could be noted a movement of production from the rich western countries to the low cost countries, already established in several sectors (textiles, automotive, consumption goods, etc.) and in progress for higher technology sectors. The possible way to face this problem for European and US companies is to invest and increase the technological level of their products by means of effective Research and Development. This is even more valid for the SMEs. The help of the public bodies in funding R&D is crucial in order to make R&D costs acceptable for companies. This paper addresses the study of the financial instruments available for companies in order to obtain financial help for research and innovation: advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Abstract (sommario):
The outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022 has had a marked effect on the Western Balkan region. Among the countries of this region, Serbia is in a unique situation due to its military neutrality, and the fact that it follows a balancing foreign policy between the Western powers on the one hand, and Russia, Turkey, and China on the other hand, also maintaining close political, economic, and security ties with the latter two powers. The second part of the paper continues to review the consequences and challenges of the war on Serbia by examining the energy domain. Russian exposure in Serbia’s energy sector, apart from the near-total reliance on Moscow for gas imports, is compounded by the fact that the most important oil company of the country, Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS) is majority-owned by Gazprom Group. As with other countries in the Central and Eastern European region as well as wider Europe, the diversification of sources and decreasing the reliance on Russian energy will take considerable time for Serbia. Cooperation both with Serbia’s neighbours and the countries of the region (e.g. Bulgaria and Greece) will play a significant role in the diversification of both sources and supply routes.

Abstract (sommario):
The antibotulinal baceriocins, propionicin PLG-1 and jenseniin G., were the first to be identified, purified and characterized for the dairy propionibaceria and are produced by Propionibacterium thoenii P127 and P. thoenii/jensenii P126, respectively. Objectives of this project were to (a) produce polyclonal antibodies for detection, comparison and monitoring of propionicin PLG-1; (b) identify, clone and characterize the propionicin PLG-1 (plg-1) and jenseniin G (jnG) genes; and (3) develop gene transfer systems for dairy propionibacteria using them as models. Polyclonal antibodies for detection, comparison and monitoring of propionicin PLG-1 were produced in rabbits. Anti-PLG-1 antiserum had high titers (256,000 to 512,000), neutralized PLG-1 activity, and detected purified PLG-1 at 0.10 mg/ml (indirect ELISA) and 0.033 mg/ml (competitive indirect ELISA). Thirty-nine of 158 strains (most P. thoenii or P. jensenii) yielded cross-reacting material; four strains of P. thoenii, including two previously unidentified bacteriocin producers, showed biological activity. Eight propionicin-negative P127 mutants produced neither ELISA response nor biological activity. Western blot analyses of supernates detected a PLG-1 band at 9.1 kDa and two additional protein bands with apparent molecular weights of 16.2 and 27.5 kDa. PLG-1 polyclonal antibodies were used for detection of jenseniin G. PLG-1 antibodies neutralized jenseniin G activity and detected a jenseniin G-sized, 3.5 kDa peptide. Preliminary immunoprecipitation of crude preparations with PLG-1 antibodies yielded three proteins including an active 3-4 kDa band. Propionicin PLG-1 antibodies were used to screen a P. jensenii/thoenii P126 genomic expression library. Complete sequencing of a cloned insert identified by PLG-1 antibodies revealed a putative response regulator, transport protein, transmembrane protein and an open reading frame (ORF) potentially encoding jenseniin G. PCR cloning of the putative plg-1 gene yielded a 1,100 bp fragment with a 355 bp ORF encoding 118 amino acids; the deduced N-terminus was similar to the known PLG-1 N-terminus. The 118 amino acid sequence deduced from the putative plg-1 gene was larger than PLG-1 possibly due to post-translational processing. The product of the putative plg-1 gene had a calculated molecular weight of 12.8 kDa, a pI of 11.7, 14 negatively charged residues (Asp+Glu) and 24 positively charged residues (Arg+Lys). The putative plg-1 gene was expressed as an inducible fusion protein with a six-histidine residue tag. Metal affinity chromatography of the fused protein yielded a homogeneous product. The fused purified protein sequence matched the deduced putative plg-1 gene sequence. The data preliminarily suggest that both the plg-1 and jnG genes have been identified and cloned. Demonstrating that antibodies can be produced for propionicin PLG-1 and that those antibodies can be used to detect, monitor and compare activity throughout growth and purification was an important step towards monitoring PLG-1 concentrations in food systems. The unexpected but fortunate cross-reactivity of PLG-1 antibodies with jenseniin G led to selective recovery of jenseniin G by immunoprecipitation. Further refinement of this separation technique could lead to powerful affinity methods for rapid, specific separation of the two bacteriocins and thus facilitate their availability for industrial or pharmaceutical uses. Preliminary identification of genes encoding the two dairy propionibacteria bacteriocins must be confirmed; further analysis will provide means for understanding how they work, for increasing their production and for manipulating the peptides to increase their target species. Further development of these systems would contribute to basic knowledge about dairy propionibacteria and has potential for improving other industrially significant characteristics.
