Abstract (sommario):
The cuneiform script provides a glimpse into our ancient history. However, reading age-old clay tablets is time-consuming and requires years of training. To simplify this process, we propose a deep-learning based sign detector that locates and classifies cuneiform signs in images of clay tablets. Deep learning requires large amounts of training data in the form of bounding boxes around cuneiform signs, which are not readily available and costly to obtain in the case of cuneiform script. To tackle this problem, we make use of existing transliterations, a sign-by-sign representation of the tablet content in Latin script. Since these do not provide sign localization, we propose a weakly supervised approach: We align tablet images with their corresponding transliterations to localize the transliterated signs in the tablet image, before using these localized signs in place of annotations to re-train the sign detector. A better sign detector in turn boosts the quality of the alignments. We combine these steps in an iterative process that enables training a cuneiform sign detector from transliterations only. While our method works weakly supervised, a small number of annotations further boost the performance of the cuneiform sign detector which we evaluate on a large collection of clay tablets from the Neo-Assyrian period. To enable experts to directly apply the sign detector in their study of cuneiform texts, we additionally provide a web application for the analysis of clay tablets with a trained cuneiform sign detector.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, we provide a quantitative analysis of weak hand holds based on corpus data. We include both a cross-linguistic analysis of these holds in narrative data from Russian Sign Language (RSL) and Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT), and a language-internal, cross-genre analysis comparing NGT narrative and conversational data. We classified the functions of all holds found in two corpora of RSL and NGT, and analyzed their formal characteristics. We found that holds in RSL and NGT have similar functions. However, holds are significantly more frequent in RSL than in NGT. In addition, we found that the distribution of holds across different functions varies between different genres in NGT. The similarities between RSL and NGT in the domain of holds may be attributed to modality effects. The differences in frequency of holds ask for a language-specific explanation, and we discuss several possible scenarios.

Abstract (sommario):
We consider the Aslamazov-Larkin term in the Hall conductivity near Tc, and find that the sign of this term is determined by ∂Tc/∂μ, where μ is Fermi level. We show that the AL term cannot explain the sign change of the Hall conductivity in high temperature superconductors. We also show that weak damping helicon waves exist in classical weak magnetic field due to the very strong increasing of AL term near Tc.

Abstract (sommario):
In life sign detection below solid material, radar echo signal is very weak and hard to extract. For solve this problem, weak life signal de-noising based on wavelet transform is studied. Through the studies of wavelet threshold de-noising method, the use of it in weak life signal de-noising in strong noise background, and the verification of simulation by Matlab, the results shows that wavelet threshold de-noising method can remove the noise signal from weak life signal effectively and be an effective de-noising and extraction method for weak life signal.

Abstract (sommario):
The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction [1,2] produces a perpendicular component in the coupling of neighbouring spins when the symmetry between the spins is low, or can drive a distortion of intervening atoms to create a spontaneous electric polarization in some magnetoelectrics. In weak ferromagnets, the canting of the atomic moments due to the DM interaction leads to a small parasitic ferromagnetic polarization in an otherwise antiferromagnetic structure. Recently, we determined the sign of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction in the weak ferromagnet FeBO3 by measuring the interference between resonant x-ray scattering and non-resonant magnetic scattering at a forbidden reflection [3]. Using the same method, we determine its sign in the carbonates MnCO3 and CoCO3. These isostructural materials turn out to show opposite interference effect: further analysis is underway to confirm or not that they actually have Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions of opposite signs. We go one step further and apply the same principle to map the absolute orientation (direction and sense) of the magnetisation in a crystal of CoCO3: by mapping the 009 forbidden reflection at 3 azimuthal angles, we obtain 3 projections of the local magnetisation allowing its unambiguous determination. The reconstructed magnetisation map, whose spacial resolution is about 20 µm x 20 µm (the size of the focused x-ray beam), was measured after zero-field cooling to 9 K, well below the Neel temperature. It confirms the strong in-plane anisotropy of the material, with magnetisation domains essentially along 6 orientations separated by 600. Two of them, with orientation at 600to each other (green and orange in the figure), are largely dominant on the part of the sample that was imaged. To our knowledge it is the first experimental determination of the absolute orientation of the magnetic moments in a weak ferromagnet. The figure shows the reconstructed map of magnetisation, with the direction of the local in-plane magnetisation encoded (in radians) on a periodic colour map.

Abstract (sommario):
The presence of code Doppler and navigation bit sign transitions means that the acquisition of global positioning system (GPS) signals is difficult in weak signal environments where the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is significantly reduced. Post-correlation techniques are typically utilised to solve these problems. Despite the advantages of these techniques, the post-correlation techniques suffer from problems caused by the code Doppler and the navigation bit sign transitions. We present an improved semi-bit differential acquisition method which can improve the code Doppler and the bit sign transition issues in the post-correlation techniques. In order to overcome the phenomenon of navigation bit sign transitions, the proposed method utilises the properties of the navigation bit. Since each navigation bit takes as long as 20 ms, there would be 10 ms correlations duration integration time between the received signal and the local coarse/acquisition (C/A) code in which the navigation bit sign transitions will not occur. Consequently, this problem can be cancelled by performing 10 ms correlations in even and odd units separately. Compensation of the code Doppler is also accomplished by shifting the code phase of the correlation results. To validate the performance of our suggested method, simulations are performed based on three data sets. The results show that the quantity of required input SNR to detect at least four satellites in the proposed method is − 48·3 dB, compared with − 20 dB and − 9 dB, respectively, in traditional differential and non-coherent methods.

Abstract (sommario):
We provide an example of an SDE with degenerate additive noise where synchronization depends on the strength of noise and the number of directions in which the noise acts. Here, synchronization means that the weak random attractor consists of a single random point. Indicated by a change of sign of the top Lyapunov exponent, we prove synchronization and no (weak) synchronization respectively.

Abstract (sommario):
Taking into account both pinning and thermal fluctuation and employing the single flux flow model of Wang, Dong, and Ting (WDT), we have performed numerical study to investigate the flux motion in the weak pinning environment in the mixed-state of high-Tc superconductors. We find that there exist two kinds of weak pinning regime, one possesses low pinning concentration but strong individual pinning potentials, the other consists of high pinning concentration but weak individual pinning potentials for the double sign reversal of Hall resistivity ρxy. Moreover, our simulation and analysis suggest that the weak collective pinning effect may not be a good reason for the abnormal Hall effect. These results are well consistent with recent measurement of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO), Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 (TBCCO) and HgBa2CaCu2O6 (HBCCO) and collective pinning theories for Hall effect.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigated whether semi-rigid and non-rigid π-conjugated fluorophores in the photoexcited (S1) and ground (S0) states exhibited mirror symmetry by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy using a range of compounds dissolved in achiral liquids. The fluorophores tested were six perylenes, six scintillators, 11 coumarins, two pyrromethene difluoroborates (BODIPYs), rhodamine B (RhB), and 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(4-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM). All the fluorophores showed negative-sign CPL signals in the ultraviolet (UV)–visible region, suggesting energetically non-equivalent and non-mirror image structures in the S1 state. The dissymmetry ratio of the CPL (glum) increased discontinuously from approximately −0.2 × 10−3 to −2.0 × 10−3, as the viscosity of the liquids increased. Among these liquids, C2-symmetrical stilbene 420 showed glum ≈ −0.5 × 10−3 at 408 nm in H2O and D2O, while, in a viscous alkanediol, the signal was amplified to glum ≈ −2.0 × 10−3. Moreover, BODIPYs, RhB, and DCM in the S0 states revealed weak (−)-sign CD signals with dissymmetry ratios (gabs) ≈ −1.4 × 10−5 at λmax/λext. The origin of the (−)-sign CPL and the (−)-sign CD signals may arise from an electroweak charge at the polyatomic level. Our CPL and CD spectral analysis could be a possible answer to the molecular parity violation hypothesis based on a weak neutral current of Z0 boson origin that could connect to the origin of biomolecular handedness.

Abstract (sommario):
The secondary modulation with the Neumann-Hoffman code increases the possibility of bit sign transition. Unlike other GNSS signals, there is no pilot component for synchronization in BeiDou B1/B3 signals, which increases the complexity in acquisition. A previous study has shown that the delay and multiplication (DAM) method is able to eliminate the bit sign transition problem, but it only applies to pretty strong signals. In this paper, a DAM-based BeiDou signal acquisition approach, called variable length data accumulation (VLDA), is proposed to acquire weak satellite signals. Firstly, the performance of DAM method versus the different delays is analyzed. The DAM operation not only eliminates bit sign transition, but it also increases noise power. Secondly, long-term signal is periodically accumulated to improve signal intensity in order to acquire weak signals. While considering the Doppler frequency shift of ranging codes, the signal length must be compensated before accumulating long-term signal. Finally, the fast-Fourier-transform based parallel code phase algorithm are used for acquisition. The simulation results indicate that the proposed VLDA method has better acquisition sensitivity than traditional non-coherent integration method under the same calculation amount. The VLDA method only requires approximately 27.5% of calculations to achieve the same acquisition sensitivity (35 dBHz). What is more, the actual experimental results verify the feasibility of the VLDA method. It can be concluded that the proposed approach is an effective and feasible method for solving the bit sign transition problem.

Abstract (sommario):
A sign preserving mixed finite element approximation for contact problemsThis paper is concerned with the frictionless unilateral contact problem (i.e., a Signorini problem with the elasticity operator). We consider a mixed finite element method in which the unknowns are the displacement field and the contact pressure. The particularity of the method is that it furnishes a normal displacement field and a contact pressure satisfying the sign conditions of the continuous problem. Thea priorierror analysis of the method is closely linked with the study of a specific positivity preserving operator of averaging type which differs from the one of Chen and Nochetto. We show that this method is convergent and satisfies the samea priorierror estimates as the standard approach in which the approximated contact pressure satisfies only a weak sign condition. Finally we perform some computations to illustrate and compare the sign preserving method with the standard approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The present correlational study examined third- and fourth-graders’ (N = 56) knowledge of mathematical equivalence after classroom instruction on the equal sign. Three distinct learning trajectories of student equivalence knowledge were compared: those who did not learn from instruction (Never Solvers), those whose performance improved after instruction (Learners), and those who had strong performance before instruction and maintained it throughout the study (Solvers). Learners and Solvers performed similarly on measures of equivalence knowledge after instruction. Both groups demonstrated high retention rates and defined the equal sign relationally, regardless of whether they had learned how to solve equivalence problems before or during instruction. Never Solvers had relatively weak arithmetical (nonsymbolic) equivalence knowledge and provided operational definitions of the equal sign after instruction.

SummaryBackground: Since the first description 30 years ago the Kaposi-Stemmer-sign is used consistently in the diagnostics of lymphoedema. Since then the original definition was extended or changed several times by other authors. Additionally, the underlying morphology of this clinical sign was not investigated. Material, methods: The second toes of both a patient with lymphoedema (stage III; iL5VxF5) and a healthy subject were compared sonographically, macroscopically and microscopically. Results: In lymphoedema both cutis and subcutis of the second toe were thickened, the structure of the dermal layers destroyed. An accumulation of oedematous fluid in free spaces within the subcutaneous tissue as well as lymphatic vessels could not be found. Discussion: The different definitions and graduations of the Kaposi-Stemmer-sign make the diagnosis of lymphoedema more difficult and concomitantly the clinical and scientific comparability. Morphologically, an accumulation of oedematous fluid could not be proven due to weak or missing streaks of fibrous tissue within the subcutis of the toe.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is about the process of learning/teaching philosophy in a class of deaf stu-dents. It starts with a presentation of Portuguese Sign Language that, as with other sign lan-guages, is recognized as a language on equal terms with vocal languages. However, in spite of the recognition of that identity, sign languages have specifi city related to the quadrimodal way of their production, and iconicity is an exclusive quality. Next, it will be argued that according to linguistic relativism - even in its weak version - language is a mould of thought. The idea of Philosophy is then discussed as an area of knowledge in which the author and the language of its production are always present. Finally, it is argued that learning/teaching Philosophy in Sign Language in a class of deaf students is linked to deaf culture and it is not merely a way of overcoming diffi culties with the spoken language

Abstract (sommario):
For global navigation satellite system receivers, Kalman filter (KF)-based tracking loops show remarkable advantages in terms of tracking sensitivity and robustness compared with conventional tracking loops. However, to improve the tracking sensitivity further, increasing the coherent integration time is necessary, but it is typically limited by the navigation data bit sign transition. Moreover, for standard KF-based tracking receivers, the KF parameters are initialized by the acquired results. However, especially under weak signal conditions, the acquired results have frequency errors that are too large for KF-based tracking to converge rapidly to a steady state. To solve these problems, a two-stage KF-based tracking architecture is proposed to track weaker signals and achieve faster convergence. In the first stage, coarse tracking refines the acquired results and achieves bit synchronization. Then, in the second stage, fine tracking initializes the KF-based tracking by using the coarse tracking results and extends the coherent integration time without the bit sign transition limitation. This architecture not only utilizes the self-tuning technique of the KF to improve the tracking sensitivity, but also adopts the two-stage to reduce the convergence time of the KF-based tracking. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms conventional tracking techniques in terms of tracking sensitivity. Furthermore, the proposed method is compared with the standard KF-based tracking approach, proving that the proposed method converges more rapidly.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study is to identify the features of strong character signs from the perspective of the semiotic weakening law (using the Chinese character “sun” as an example). The Chinese character system is a heterogeneous system with different types of signs (strong, weakened and weak signs). To figure out the place and role of a strong sign in this system and to describe its basic features, the paper provides the description of different character categories in compliance with their stages of semiotic weakening. The analysis showed that pictograms and simple indicatives belong to the strong signs, idiographic, transfer and loan characters belong to the weakened signs, while phonosemantic compound characters belong to the weak signs. The work is novel in that it describes both the basic features of strong character signs and the process of semiotic weakening from the perspective of evolutionary and hierarchic relations. As a result, the study revealed that strong characters lose grammatical independence and retain their semantic meaning. It was also concluded that the more strong signs become a part of the writing system, the more they weaken and become conventional.

Abstract (sommario):
Observations have indicated that the net helicity sign of active regions is predominantly negative in the northern hemisphere and positive in the southern (see Table 1). From Table 1, we find that the hemispheric sign rule of helicity parameter αbest does not change with another solar cycle; but the helicity parameter Hc seems to show a weak opposite hemispheric preference for Huairou data in the solar cycle 23 and no preference for Mees data. How to explain such a phenomenon? We think one reason may be from the action of Faraday rotation. Faraday rotation will cause a counterclockwise rotation of the azimuth for a positive polarity field and vice versa. During the cycle 22, the polarity of leading sunspots is dominantly negative in the northern hemisphere and positive in the southern. The effect of Faraday rotation, which is determined mostly by a leading polarity sunspot, has a positive contribution to the percentage of current helicity signs in active regions and leads to the increase of the strength of the hemispheric sign rule. In the cycle 23, the polarity of most leading sunspots is positive in the northern hemisphere and Faraday rotation will decrease the percentage of current helicity signs. Consequently, the strength of the hemispheric rule should be weakened. On the other hand, Hc is more susceptible to Faraday rotation than αbest because it is mainly related to the areas where the line-of-sight field is strong. Therefore, if the effect of Faraday rotation is not completely removed in our observations, the hemispheric sign rule showed is weak in the cycle 23 than in the cycle 22 (for αbest), even opposite (for Hc).

Abstract (sommario):
Reordering by the rule of decreased absolute amplitudes, the discrete cosine transformation (DCT) coefficients of an image are approximately modeled as dichotomous noise. Based on this assumption, it is interesting to note that the classical multiplicative embedding method can be transformed into an additive embedding rule, which accords with the signal processing problem of detecting a known weak signal in additive non-Gaussian noise. Then, following the generalized Neyman-Pearson lemma, a locally optimum detector, named the sign detector, is introduced to distinguish the correct watermark from the wrong ones. The statistical characteristics of this nonlinear sign detector are analytically investigated in detail. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the robustness of watermark against some common attacks, e.g., JPEG compression, cropping, filtering, additive Gaussian noise, dithering, and also verify the robust performance of the nonlinear sign detector for watermark detection.

Abstract (sommario):
This article reviews the state of the art of the studies on charge regulation (CR) effects in flexible weak polyelectrolytes (FWPE). The characteristic of FWPE is the strong coupling of ionization and conformational degrees of freedom. After introducing the necessary fundamental concepts, some unconventional aspects of the the physical chemistry of FWPE are discussed. These aspects are: (i) the extension of statistical mechanics techniques to include ionization equilibria and, in particular, the use of the recently proposed Site Binding-Rotational Isomeric State (SBRIS) model, which allows the calculation of ionization and conformational properties on the same foot; (ii) the recent progresses in the inclusion of proton equilibria in computer simulations; (iii) the possibility of mechanically induced CR in the stretching of FWPE; (iv) the non-trivial adsorption of FWPE on ionized surfaces with the same charge sign as the PE (the so-called “wrong side” of the isoelectric point); (v) the influence of macromolecular crowding on CR.

Abstract (sommario):
Cryptography with quantum states exhibits a number of surprising and counterintuitive features. In a 2002 work, Barnum et al. argue that these features imply that digital signatures for quantum states are impossible (Barnum et al., FOCS 2002). In this work, we ask: can all forms of signing quantum data, even in a possibly weak sense, be completely ruled out? We give two results which shed significant light on this basic question.First, we prove an impossibility result for digital signatures for quantum data, which extends the result of Barnum et al. Specifically, we show that no nontrivial combination of correctness and security requirements can be fulfilled, beyond what is achievable simply by measuring the quantum message and then signing the outcome. In other words, only classical signature schemes exist. We then show a positive result: a quantum state can be signed with the same security guarantees as classically, provided that it is also encrypted with the public key of the intended recipient. Following classical nomenclature, we call this notion quantum signcryption. Classically, signcryption is only interesting if it provides superior performance to encypt-then-sign. Quantumly, it is far more interesting: it is the only signing method available. We develop "as-strong-as-classical" security definitions for quantum signcryption and give secure constructions based on post-quantum public-key primitives. Along the way, we show that a natural hybrid method of combining classical and quantum schemes can be used to "upgrade" a secure classical scheme to the fully-quantum setting, in a wide range of cryptographic settings including signcryption, authenticated encryption, and CCA security.

Abstract (sommario):
Rasmusen et al. (1991) and Segal and Whinston (2000) show that an incumbent monopolist might prevent entry of a more efficient competitor by exploiting externalities among buyers. We show that their results hold only when downstream competition among buyers is weak. Under fierce downstream competition, if entry took place, a free buyer would become more competitive and increase its output and profits at the expense of buyers that sign an exclusive deal with the incumbent. Anticipating that orders from a single buyer would trigger entry, no buyer will sign the exclusive deal and entry will occur. This result is robust across different specifications of the game.

Abstract (sommario):
The current induced local spin polarization due to weak Rashba spin-orbit coupling in narrow strip is studied. In the presence of longitudinal charge current, local spin polarizations appear in the sample. The spin polarization perpendicular to the plane has opposite sign near the two edges. The in-plane spin polarization in the direction perpendicular to the sample edges also appears, but does not change sign across the sample. From our scaling analysis based on increasing the strip width, the out-of-plane spin polarization is important mainly in a system of mesoscopic size, and thus appears not to be associated with the spin-Hall effect in bulk samples.

Abstract (sommario):
Computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the neck has become the most common modality for diagnosing blunt carotid artery injury (BCAI). The protocol at our institution includes CTA on trauma patients with a seatbelt sign. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether a solitary seatbelt sign is an indication for CTA of the neck to diagnose BCAI. We conducted a retrospective review of patients from 2000 to 2010 who received CTAs as a result of a seatbelt sign performed at our Level I trauma center. Four hundred eighteen patients received CTAs based on the presence of a seatbelt sign. Two hundred twenty-six had skeletal injuries, obvious soft tissue injuries, and/or positive findings on imaging, including 11 positive vascular findings with two BCAIs found. Patients with noncarotid vascular injuries on CTA had a higher Injury Severity Score than patients with solitary seatbelt signs (11.4 ± 7.6 vs 3.4 ± 4.2, P < 0.01). The correlation between seatbelt sign and positive finding on CTA was weak ( r = 0.007). Patients with vascular findings on CTA also had obvious hard/soft tissue injuries and/or positive findings on standard trauma imaging. This suggests that a protocol for CTA of the neck for patients with a seatbelt sign can be reserved for those with associated injuries on physical examination and/or findings on standard trauma imaging.

Abstract (sommario):
Radio frequency (RF) sensors such as radar are instrumental for continuous, contactless sensing of vital signs, especially heart rate (HR) and respiration rate (RR). However, decades of related research mainly focused on static subjects, because the motion artifacts from other body parts may easily overwhelm the weak reflections from vital signs. This paper marks a first step in enabling RF vital sign sensing under ambulant daily living conditions. Our solution is inspired by existing physiological research that revealed the correlation between vital signs and body movement. Specifically, we propose to combine direct RF sensing for static instances and indirect vital sign prediction based on movement power estimation. We design customized machine learning models to capture the sophisticated correlation between RF signal pattern, movement power, and vital signs. We further design an instant calibration and adaptive training scheme to enable cross-subjects generalization, without any explicit data labeling from unknown subjects. We prototype and evaluate the framework using a commodity radar sensor. Under a variety of moving conditions, our solution demonstrates an average estimation error of 5.57 bpm for HR and 3.32 bpm for RR across multiple subjects, which largely outperforms state-of-the-art systems.

Abstract (sommario):
The movie 7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita directed by Robby Ertanto that presents a representation of seven women in the Indonesian context through certain signs, concepts, thoughts, and language. This representation can be in the form of a depiction of physical or psychological violence, subordination, workload, power, or women's reproductive rights. The research method used Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis model and constructivist paradigm approach. Barthes' theory represents two ideological signs that he put forward, namely the denotative sign system or the connotative sign system: A denotative sign, which is a more rigorous descriptive system than the connotative sign it has described, is the result of the existing signifier image and the signified concept. for example vegetables and milk are markers and healthy and strong are markers. Whereas A connotative sign is a sign that experiences a shift in its historical meaning due to a change in meaning. It can be influenced by a change in culture or terminology, an event that occurs in a situation, or even just an evolution. The results of this study indicate that in the movie7 Hati 7 Cinta 7 Wanita contains at least three points of findings: (1) aspects of female domestication and gender politics, which encourage women to be placed in traditional positions as housewives, (2) aspects of segregation, namely placing women in a weak position in relation to men, (3) many women experience the reality that places them in subordinate positions.

Here [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are sign-changing functions. We prove [Formula: see text] estimates, weak Harnack inequality and Interior Hölder regularity of the weak solutions of the above problem in the subcritical case [Formula: see text] Also, by analyzing the fibering maps and minimizing the energy functional over suitable subsets of the Nehari manifold, we prove existence and multiplicity of weak solutions to above convex–concave problem. In case of [Formula: see text], we show the existence of a solution.
