La rédaction des relations de voyage confère un nouveau statut au voyageur, celui de l’écrivain. Cette conception nouvelle met au jour une opposition entre l’écrivain-voyageur et le voyageur-écrivain. À l’un reviendrait les compétences de l’écriture, une vision de l’ailleurs qui s’offre par la médiation de l’artifice littéraire. L’autre note souvent ses perceptions immédiates dans un style simple. Mais que dire des voyageurs qui ne savent ni lire ni écrire? L’étude de Grégoire Holtz démontre que la période « entre le Moyen-Âge jusqu’à la fin du XVIIe siècle, est une période particulièrement fertile pour la composition des récits de voyage à quatre mains » (Holtz 300). Nous analyserons le cas spécifique de François Pyrard de Laval et celui de Jean Thévenot, deux voyageurs qui s’embarquent vers les Indes orientales au XVIIe siècle. Pyrard est natif d’une famille de marchands de Laval et il est à la limite de l’analphabétisme. Jean Thévenot, quant à lui, est bien éduqué, mais comme il est mort sur le chemin de retour, c’est son frère qui achève la deuxième partie de ses Voyages. Quelles qu’en soient les raisons, l’appel à un rédacteur pour écrire le voyage semble très répandu et la grande constante de cette forme d’écriture est l’effacement du rédacteur derrière la figure du voyageur. Nous examinerons le rôle de ces deux copistes : Pierre Bergeron et Bonaventure Thévenot. S’agit-il de simples scribes ou bien des rédacteurs qui ont profondément modifié le récit du voyageur pour satisfaire aux attentes du public?

Résumé Dans la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, pendant le règne de Louis XIV, encouragés par le pouvoir, les voyages connaissent un essor spectaculaire, et avec eux les récits qui en sont faits. Parmi eux, le récit de voyage commercial occupe une place importante. Des voyageurs comme Tavernier (Les six voyages de Jean-Baptiste Tavernier…, 1676) et Chardin (Voyages de Monsieur le Chevalier Chardin en Perse et autres lieux de l’Orient, 1686), tous deux experts en joaillerie, incarnent la figure du négociant cultivé et audacieux, représentatif de cette période. Travaillant pour leur propre compte et fortune, ces voyageurs sont en phase avec l’ambition nationale de conquête. Leur parcours individuel s’inscrit donc dans un contexte d’épopée collective. L’aventure commerciale est marquée par un ennoblissement idéologique et le négociant, soudainement valorisé, y gagne un statut de protagoniste. Avec lui, le monde concret, généralement fort peu présent dans la littérature du XVIIe siècle, fait irruption dans la littérature de voyage : l’argent y est un thème omniprésent associé à celui de l’ascension sociale. Mais le voyage marchand est aussi le contexte d’une valorisation de la notion de « métier », de savoir-faire, et bien sûr de travail et d’effort. Au-delà, on assiste à la promotion littéraire de certaines valeurs « bourgeoises », qui avaient eu jusque-là un statut plutôt marginal. Le récit devient souvent la preuve tangible d’une réussite sociale et matérielle, et la somme de connaissances est à l’image des profits que le voyage a permis d’effectuer : l’exigence de « rendement » intellectuel répond ici à l’impératif de profit commercial.

This paper introduces the strategic concept of energy debt acquired by interstellar migrations at their destination. For such voyages an energy debt of travel can be calculated, where KE V2 M Travel Population Distance to Destination. In addition, at destination, growth must be initiated to fill the energy and resource needs of the arrivals. A targeted solar system must contain sufficient resources to supply a growth that provides the technological needs of the arriving society and eventually to develop the capability of escaping the system equivalent to that which had been required for the initial launch. Thus, the capacity of the destination to fill the energy debt of the voyage, at a first approximation given by the planetary and solar masses, is a significant factor in the decision to make the voyage. A simple utility ratio, τ, relating voyage time to technological growth time at destination is proposed and two destinations from Earth are considered in terms of this factor. It is proposed that a Kardashev Type II phase of growth results in such a dependency on energy that investing in high resource-use interstellar voyages will be a necessary means by which a technological civilisation can retard consuming its system’s entire carrying capacity. Some practical methods of avoiding the voyage’s energy debt, including in-flight refuelling, fly-by ‘seeding’ scenarios and the potentials of exotic physics or higher dimensional life are discussed and shown to be ineffective. Other classes of exploratory voyages such as the Icarus Project’s Firefly and those using beamed propulsion methods will also be discussed in relation to the utility ratio. Applying this utility ratio to the likelihood of ETI encounters in any form with Humans at their current stage of development leads to the conclusion that alien encounters will be rare and no scenario for current alien activity on Earth is likely to be correct. Si le récit de voyage donne à voir l’ailleurs pour satisfaire la curiosité des lecteurs, leur offrant l’illusion du voyage qu’ils ne peuvent faire, leur montrant les merveilles, ces objets caractérisés par leur capacité à surprendre, nous y retrouverons bien la présence de l’hypotypose, « peinture parlante » qui développe « l’art de rendre présentes les choses absentes » et de « rendre imaginable l’inimaginable et vraisemblable l’invraisemblable ». Les récits de voyages, par leur développement au cours des derniers siècles du Moyen Âge, marquèrent l’affirmation de l’individu et l’avènement de l’empirisme. Basés sur l’expérience personnelle du voyageur (qu’elle soit réelle ou fictive), il faut à ces textes transmettre et convaincre de cette vision directe (autopsiam), afin de rendre visible et palpable pour le lecteur cet horizon inconnu dévoilé par le voyage. L’hypotypose serait ainsi un des outils érigeant le récit de voyage en source pertinente de savoir par le partage de l’expérience sensible du voyageur. La valorisation du savoir empirique s’appuie sur cette caractéristique d’épiphanie de l’hypotypose.

Résumé : Nous nous proposons dans cet article d'étudier et d'analyser les notions de voyage et de rêve dans l'œuvre de Jules Verne, plus particulièrement en nous penchant sur l'un de ses romans de Voyages extraordinaires, à savoir Un capitaine de quinze ans paru en 1878. Premièrement, nous visons à clarifier les notions de voyage et de rêve dans l’œuvre de Jules Verne, et deuxièmement, nous analyserons les constructions et les éléments par lesquels l’œuvre de Jules Verne et surtout Un capitaine de quinze ans peut être interprété comme un rêve de voyage. Dernièrement, pour arriver à des conclusions pertinentes, nous allons montrer que, le voyage, surtout initiatique du héros du roman, le rêve de voyager en sûreté vers une destination inconnue s’accomplissent. Captain William Snelgrave's A New Account of Some Parts of Guinea, and the Slave Trade, first published in 1734, is a work well known to historians of West Africa. The largest and most valuable section of it comprises a detailed account of voyages by the author in 1727 and 1730 to the ports of Whydah and Jakin on the Slave Coast, then recently conquered by Dahomey, and offers the earliest extended account of the latter kingdom to be published. The information in Snelgrave's book can also be supplemented by records of testimony which he provided on two occasions, in 1726 and 1731, before the Commissioners for Trade and Plantations in London.Snelgrave was a slave-trading captain with, at the time of his book's publication, some thirty years' experience of the West African trade. The details of his career are documented principally from his book, which in addition to the voyages of 1727 and 1730 (which form its principal subject), also alludes to several earlier slave-trading voyages undertaken by him. Snelgrave's first voyage to Africa, in which he served as purser on a ship commanded by his father, was to Old Calabar in 1704; a second voyage to Old Calabar was undertaken in 1713, a voyage to Sierra Leone (on which Snelgrave was captured by pirates) in 1719, and a voyage to the Gold Coast in 1721-22. This is not, however, a comprehensive catalog of Snelgrave's voyages, since he also alludes to having visited Whydah on “several voyages” before 1727. Other evidence documents two such earlier voyages by Snelgrave to Whydah, in 1717 and 1725. He was apparently still alive in 1735, the year after the publication of his book, when he is mentioned among a group of people involved in legal proceedings to press claims on the estate of Patrick West, a recently deceased merchant of Antigua.

Alors que le xve siècle voit les premiers navires portugais s’aventurer dans les eaux de la côte occidentale de l’Afrique et débarquer sur les îles puis le continent, les marchands et pèlerins russes sont déjà fréquents dans les rues d’Alexandrie et du Caire. Après une longue période de voyages religieux et culturels en Égypte et à la faveur de l’apparition des sociétés géographiques en Europe au début du xixe siècle, de nombreux intellectuels russes pousseront plus loin leur découverte du continent africain. Aujourd’hui, la lecture des témoignages laissés par ces pionniers du voyage en Afrique nous fournit bien des informations sur les premières heures de cette rencontre. Bien que moins nombreux que ceux de leurs collègues de l’Europe de l’Ouest, les récits des voyageurs russes sont d’autant plus importants qu’ils renseignent aussi sur la délicate cohabitation entre religieux européens et africains à Jérusalem. En ce sens, notre démarche s’appuie non seulement sur l’histoire de ces voyages, mais aussi sur une analyse des rapports d’influence qui se jouent entre les écrivains-voyageurs selon les époques.

Résumé La tension dialectique entre l'espace du réfèrent, en tant que réalité, et l'espace de sa construction discursive constitue sans doute la plus grande difficulté que pose l'écriture du récit de voyage. Face à cette difficulté, Henri-Raymond Casgrain recourt à diverses stratégies de substitution intertextuelle par lesquelles il rend l'espace lisible. Ses écrits de voyage prennent alors la forme de voyages dans le temps ou encore celle de voyages dans les livres. L'expérience du voyage se transforme en pèlerinage culturel, ce qui atténue l'effet d'infraction occasionné par le passage de la référentialité à l'intertextualité.

Le récit de voyage postmoderne se caractérise de plus en plus par une ré-écriture des voyages de prédécesseurs proches ou lointains. Souvent considérée comme une preuve supplémentaire de la « fin des voyages », une telle narration permet aussi d’explorer les possibilités de la dimension intertextuelle de l’écriture du voyage. Après avoir fait le point sur ces notions, nous analysons deux récits de voyage en Afrique de la main d’auteurs contemporains : d’une part L’Africain de l’écrivain français J.M.G. Le Clézio, d’autre part, Mon oncle du Congo de l’écrivain belge Lieve Joris.

La thèse présente, dans une première partie, 42 voyageurs français provenant d'horizons sociaux différents, dotés de divers niveaux d'instruction et qui ont parcouru les Pays scandinaves aux XVIIème et XVIIIème siècles. Leurs voyages dont ils ont laissé une trace écrite qui a été publiée furent réalisés dans des buts variés, tels que diplomatie, commerce, religion, tourisme et, tout particulièrement au XVIIIème siècle, sciences. Influencés par les grands voyages de découverte, formés et motivés par l'enseignement croissant de la géographie que l'on pratique même au plus haut niveau du royaume, ces voyageurs ont décrit leurs itinéraires, leurs conditions de vie, leurs rencontres, les milieux diplomatiques, les paysages, le climat, les langues parlées, la vie intellectuelle, l'importance du détroit du Sond, sans oublier le sujet exotique par excellence, la Laponie que certains ont visités. Les voyageurs s'en revinrent en "citoyens du monde". La thèse décrit également les conditions de rédaction et de publication des récits, cite les traductions et les éditions successives et apporte une indéniable contribution à l'histoire de l'édition du livre de voyage. Dans une seconde partie sont présentés brièvement la biographie de chaque voyageur, ses diverses œuvres et les commentaires bibliographiques français et étrangers que son récit a suscités. Enfin plus de mille références archivistiques et bibliographiques et 15 annexes viennent compléter et clore cette thèse
This thesis presents in its first part 42 French travellers coming from different social spheres, endowed with various educating levels, who travelled in the Scandinavian countries during the 17th and 18th centuries. They have left printed traces of their travels that were done for different purposes such as diplomacy, business, religion, tourism and, particularly in the 18th century, sciences. Influenced by the spirit of the great discovery travels, minded-educated and motivated by the growing teaching of geography, even practised at the highest levels of the kingdom, these travellers describe their itinerary, their way of living, the people they met, the diplomatic circles, the landscapes, the climate, the languages they spoke, the culture and leisure life, the importance of the Sund strait, and also the typically exotic matter of the time, Lapland that some travellers visited. The travellers came back home, feeling themselves like "citizens of the world". The thesis describes also how these relations were written, then printed, quotes which works were translated and how many editions they got, and brings an undeniable contribution to the history of travel literature. The second part gives for each traveller some biographical data, the list of his works and the different French and foreign bibliographical comments that the publication brought about. Finally more than a thousand archives and bibliographical data and 15 attached documents complete and finish off the thesis

Cette thèse se propose de regarder l’Autre (le Mexique) à travers une pratique culturelle (le voyage) qui acquiert un sens spécifique dans une société précise, à un moment donné (la France du XIXe siècle). En tant que déplacement dans l'espace, le voyage a comme caractéristique principale la rencontre avec l'Autre. Il s'agit d'une expérience qui sort du quotidien ce qui implique un distancement du monde connu. Les récits qui en jaillissent permettent la traduction d'une expérience individuelle en savoir collectif. Ils sont intégrés aux codes et structures de l'endroit où on raconte. La perspective est celle de l'histoire culturelle. Les représentations constituent le facteur déterminant de la construction des systèmes de classification et de perception, et le générateur des pratiques du monde social. L'altérité ne peut pas être comprise sans tenir compte du sujet qui compare et de son identité. Pour cela, l'observateur fait usage des codes et des idées préétablies dans sa propre culture, c'est un jeu de miroirs qui mettent en avant les mythes, les clichés et les stéréotypes qui sont mis en jeu chaque fois que l'on veut parler de « celui que je ne suis pas ». L'expérience voyageuse produit un effet d'étrangeté. De même que le Mexique est recréé dans le temps du récit, le vécu dans cet espace inconnu transforme aussi le regard de l'observateur ; ses idées et ses principes sont mis à l'épreuve et le voyageur ne rentre pas indemne
This thesis intends to look at the other (Mexico) through a cultural practice (the trip or journey) which gains a specific meaning at a given time, in a stated society (France in the XIXth century). The main characteristic of the travel, as a displacement in space, is the encounter with the other. It's about an experience that goes further than the everyday's life, which involves a further understanding of the well-known world. This brings out narrative writings allowing the translation of an individual experience into a collective knowledge because they are incorporated to the structures and codes from where they are narrated. The cultural history is our perspective. The representations are the decisive factor of the construction of systems for the classification and the perspectives, and, also, the generator of the social world practices. Otherness cannot be understood without taking into accounts the subject that compares and his identity. As a consequence, the observer uses codes and pre established ideas from his own culture, it's a mirror game that highlights the myths, clichés and stereotypes that are involved each time that one wants to talk about « the one that I am not ». The travelling experience creates an effect of strangeness. As Mexico is recreated in the time of the narration, personal experiences in this unknown space alter the observer's sight; His ideas and principles are probated and the traveler does not return unchanged

Stimulé par la prise en charge et l'observation de troubles psychiques transitoires présentes par des voyageurs en inde, le présent travail invite à une approche, plus anthropologique, des jeux d'identité induits par le voyage même. Apres avoir attiré l'attention, à la lumière de données personnelles complétées d'une étude détaillée de travaux psychiatriques et de cas littéraires, sur les dimensions atypiques de ces vertiges du « moi » redoublant une expatriation et la rencontre de cultures étrangères, il revient sur l'apport, en ce domaine, de la psychanalyse et de l'ethnographie. De l'influence de périples réels dans l'exégèse inspirée d'une errance tragique (Freud-Oedipe), au rôle de l'inconscient dans la description fondatrice d'argonautes sauvages (Jason-Malinowski), il explore et montre ce faisant la place étrange tenue par le voyage dans la naissance et certaines des réflexions ultérieures de ces deux disciplines : place pour partie fantomatique, particulièrement explorée par l'oeuvre de Leiris, et renvoyant a une sorte d'impense dans le parcours (héroïque) des hommes de sciences eux-mêmes; mais place stimulante, car source de passages oubliés qui, éclairant des données plus récentes, promeuvent aujourd'hui le voyage, de « nous » aux « autres », comme un chemin à suivre.

La thèse porte sur le voyage et les voyageurs dans le bassin du Tchad. Il s'agit de comprendre les différentes mobilités des populations à travers la région ainsi que leurs motivations. Les visites familiales constituent le premier motif du voyage autour desquelles se greffent d'autres motivations. Toutefois à travers cette mobilité incessante polarisée sur la famille dans sa pratique comme dans ses représentations, apparait un besoin de loisir et de tourisme d'une classe moyenne en émergence. Ce besoin de loisir s'exprime également par les pratiques d'expatriés qui sont d'autant différentes de celles de touristes non résidents. Les deux explorent et valorisent par leur présence les sites touristes de la région. Quelles que soient leurs motivations. Cette mobilité a une influence sur l'espace : celui du voyage et celui du loisir. Elle est empreinte de risque, d'abord à travers la perception d'une région ayant connu un conflit récurrent mais aussi par le vécu lorsque le véhicule circule sur une route qui n'existe que de nom. Ce risque est différemment apprécié par les voyageurs occidentaux et africains qui soit l'intègrent dans leur voyage et la pratique de l'espace en dépend, soit par fatalité l'acceptent sans trop y penser. Le tourisme en Afrique n'est pas seulement les chiffres de fréquentation mais aussi les différentes attitudes des populations à son égard marquées à la fois par l'indifférence, voire la méfiance ou l'intérêt. Le développement touristique inégal des pays africains en découle.

Abstract A critical element in heavy transport design is the identification of design wave conditions. Since most transports are one-of-a-kind, statistically meaningful comparisons of observed vs. design conditions are nonexistent. The present paper examines the experience from a recent oil and gas giga-project, encompassing 56 replicate voyages from Korea to the Suez Canal. In doing so, this paper provides an anchor point for assessing the real-world likelihood of exceeding design wave conditions during heavy transport. Voyage maximum wave conditions from the 56 replicate voyages are found to closely follow a Weibull distribution, allowing for the ready evaluation of observed 1-in-N voyage extremes. These observed wave conditions are compared with corresponding design values on both a year-round and seasonal (3-month) basis. Three important observations are drawn from these comparisons. First, operating limits established by heavy transport contractors to avoid waves above a predetermined threshold do not eliminate the need to design for higher wave conditions. Over the 56 replicate voyages studied, observed wave conditions slightly exceeded the contractor's self-imposed operating limit (i.e., by approximately 10% or less) on five separate voyages; on a sixth voyage, this same operating limit was exceeded by approximately 40%. Second, simplified tools for evaluating design wave conditions using Global Wave Statistics do not consistently estimate the 1-in-10 voyage extreme. While the simplified approach is shown to be conservative for the route studied, the associated design margin varies considerably throughout the year. Third, SafeTrans voyage simulations are observed to well-predict the 1-in-10 voyage extreme for the route studied.

Abstract US cabotage laws and the low supply of Jones Act compliant Wind Turbine Installation Vessels (WTIV) necessitate the use of the feeder vessel system when installing offshore wind projects. This paper outlines a numerical methodology for determining weather impacts on installation operations and simulating the number of installation voyages that can be completed using a feeder vessel. One installation voyage consists of roundtrip transportation between the port and transfer of wind turbine generator (WTG) components at both ends. A representative 100.2 m vessel was used to demonstrate the applicability of this method. Ultimately, the results reflect strong dependence on seasonality, and as found in a previous study, the voyage is most sensitive to environmental conditions when transferring WTG components at the installation site [1, 2, 3]. Traveling between Northport, NY and the Bay State Wind lease area, the maximum amount of voyages achieved per month for this vessel was 10 due to configuration delays between the start and end of consecutive voyages. This figure increases to 14.1 per month when voyages occur consecutively. Finally, this method can be applied to other feeder vessels for individual analysis, comparison to each other, and even comparison against WTIVs to determine if adapting the feeder concept is advantageous in other countries where restrictions like the Jones Act are not a limiting factor.

Abstract Ocean-going vessels are under the continuous influence on the effect of the weather, e.g. wind, waves, ocean currents. Since the weather conditions are random in nature, there are situations where the shipmaster changes the ship speed or/and heading of the original sailing path to avoid harsh weather conditions according to his judgment, experience and/or using voyage optimization systems (e.g. weather routing systems). However, ship operators hardly prioritize the ship fatigue routing in their operations. It is preferable to consider the effect of different wave environment due to ship operation in the design process to make a more rational ship design of the structural members. In this study, sailing paths are planned, adopting voyage optimization in order to reduce the probability of encountering severe sea conditions and the minimization of the fatigue accumulation in ship structures. Short-sea sequences are generated by a statistical wave storm model. The storm profiles are determined by using the cumulative frequency of short-seas which are experienced in the different voyages optimized by the algorithm. The influence of the difference in short-seas encountered by the target ship following the optimized voyages on the cumulative damage is demonstrated by a container vessel, which also considers a weather routing system in her operations. Full-scale measurement data for two years’ voyages are considered for the verification. The benefits of using voyages optimization systems focus on reducing fatigue damage to mitigate the risk of structural failure is discussed.

In order to reveal the change law of long-voyage crew alertness in the time dimension of voyage, determine the best time for long-voyage crew alertness intervention, and design the intervention strategy to improve long-voyage crew alertness, this study designed and carried out a series of long-voyage simulation experiments based on the needs of long-term voyages. The results of the study found that the rhythm of the simulated crew is disturbed and the best and worst changes are reversed on the prometaphase of the mid-long-term voyage, which may mean rhythm disturbance is one of the reasons for the alertness sharp declining of the crew. The ERPs latency of target locking the alertness test has no significantly different in the before, middle and after stages on mid-short voyage, that is, the time of detecting target is no delay, but the response time increases, indicating that the decrease of alertness of the crew on mid-short voyages may be related to the decrease of response ability. Based on the above results, the intervention timing for alertness was determined, intervention strategies were designed, and the effectiveness of intervention strategies was verified through experiments.

A study was made to estimate the transit time of time-critical cargo (LNG) from Western Australia to the Far East (e.g. Japan) or the southern U.S. west coast. Unexpected delays during transit can result in stiff financial penalties imposed by LNG buyers. Conversely, quicker than expected voyages will underutilize expensive tankers. Since there was no prior experience along the two routes using the proposed new-build vessels, the SafeTrans computer simulation program was used to calculate the voyage duration. SafeTrans is a comprehensive routing simulator that accounts for weather routing, ship dynamics, and weather forecast errors. Basic voyage duration statistics are presented and indicate important differences between a) outgoing and returning voyages, b) the two routes, and c) weather-routed and non-weather-routed scenarios. These differences are examined and reveal that voyage duration estimate is significantly impacted by weather routing, and a comprehensive ship motion model and weather database. Finally, our results demonstrate an application of SafeTrans that goes beyond the original purposes of the program, and suggests it might well be useful for estimating the voyage duration for other types of time-critical cargo.

Abstract The Northeast Passage in the Arctic between Europe and Asia offers a significantly shorter voyage compared to the Southern route through the Suez Canal. In 2017, the EU research project “Safe maritime operations under extreme conditions: the Arctic case (SEDNA)” was established to perform a comprehensive analysis of Arctic transit shipping and to promote technical solutions for this purpose. This paper is based on the deliverables of the SEDNA project. A voyage planning tool (VPT) for Arctic applications was developed to plan the optimal route regarding ship’s fuel consumption and safety. One of the most advanced metocean and ice forecast model is utilized to provide comprehensive environmental conditions that are synchronized and will be updated frequently during the voyage. The ship energy system model takes into account the various environmental variables as well as ship’s operational conditions to compute the ship performance in both open and ice infested waters. For Arctic operations, specific ice resistance models are implemented in the VPT, and a user has the options of either relying on icebreaker assistance or going for unassisted navigation in part of the entire Arctic passage. Case study voyages of different ship types, route options, staring time, home/destination ports are simulated to demonstrate how various optimal routes are planned and how the transit time and fuel consumption vary. This information is considered being crucial for ship owners for planning their voyages in advance. The continuously updated voyage information from the VPT is particularly helpful for the ship crew if there are specific ship operations and risk mitigation actions that need to be taken care of during the voyage. In addition, this study underlines that a safe and fuel-efficient Arctic passage requires viable voyage planning tools that combine reliable ship performance with weather and ice forecasts.

This paper presents results from an ongoing research project which aims at developing a numerical tool for route planning of container ships. The objective with the tool is to be able to schedule a route that causes minimum fatigue damage to a vessel before it leaves port. Therefore a new simple fatigue estimation model, only using encountered significant wave height, is proposed for predicting fatigue accumulation of a vessel during a voyage. The formulation of the model is developed based on narrow-band approximation. The significant response height hs, is shown to have a linear relationship with its encountered significant wave height Hs. The zero up-crossing response frequency fz, is represented as the corresponding encountered wave frequency and is expressed as a function of Hs. The capacity and accuracy of the model is illustrated by application on one container vessel’s fatigue damage accumulation, for different voyages, operating in the North Atlantic during 2008. For this vessel, all the necessary data needed in the fatigue model, and for verification of it, was obtained by measurements. The results from the proposed fatigue model are compared with the well-known and accurate rain-flow estimation. The conclusion is that the estimations made using the current fatigue model agree well with the rain-flow method for almost all of the voyages.

Voyageurs National Park (VNP) is a water-based park that includes part or all of four large lakes and twenty-six smaller lakes commonly referred to as “interior lakes”. The 26 interior lakes of VNP are important aquatic resources with differing size and depth, water chemistry, trophic status, fish communities, and visitor use. Despite the remote location of these lakes, they have been impacted by multiple stressors, including contaminants and non-native species. This assessment provides key information in support of a science-based management plan for these lakes. The objectives of this assessment were to: 1) assess the status of each of the interior lakes and categorically rank the lakes from least to most impacted; 2) use the results to make specific science-based management and restoration recommendations for the most impacted lakes; and 3) make general recommendations that may be useful in managing all of Voyageurs National Park’s interior lakes. When all factors considered in this analysis (water quality, fish mercury concentrations, and fish community characteristics) were combined and assessed, thirteen lakes were classified as most impacted, nine as moderately impacted, and three as least impacted. Although nearly half of the lakes were classified as most impacted in this assessment, many of these lakes are in excellent condition compared to other lakes in the region. The factor-by-factor impact status of the lakes was considered to help describe the condition of the lakes and the potential for restoration. No local management options were identified to mitigate the mercury contamination in these lakes as research has shown the sources of the contamination to arrive from regional and global sources. Similarly, no management actions were identified to reduce nutrient concentrations in the lakes ranked most impacted for nutrient conditions as these are remote lakes with minimal or no development within their watersheds, and it was also noted that paleolimnological studies have shown that the nutrient status of the interior lakes was relatively unchanged from pre-European settlement conditions. Finally, for the lakes in which presumed introduced fish species are present, piscicides were considered as a potential management action. Piscicides were not recommended as a strategy to eradicate introduced fish species as it was determined that genetic conservation of the populations of native fish species still present in these lakes was more valuable than eradicating the introduced species.
