Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Against the background of the biggest arts festival in the world, there have been some shocking findings recently about the treatment of performers and other workers at the Fringe. The purpose of this paper is to consider the type of treatment a significant number of Fringe workers experience and how it might be dealt with under the law. The mistreatment of workers includes being: required to work excessively long hours, paid low wages or no wages, subject to sexual or street harassment, lookism, ageism or deprivation of other employment rights. What is unusual about Fringe workers is they normally only work for a short time (often a maximum of two months). Also, in respect of performers and other theatre workers, they might be inclined to work on a voluntary, unpaid basis to gain the necessary experience to kickstart their careers. Employers will often be theatrical promoters in charge of productions at a number of venues. This paper highlights the issues surrounding working at the Fringe and identifies the employment law issues for its workers. This involves identifying likely breaches of legislation under the civil law and contract law by employers. Also, the consideration of how the criminal law could apply to the treatment of workers is undertaken. Finally, it involves an analysis of how the rights of Fringe workers could be better protected. The findings and recommendations in this paper will have application to any situation where someone is employed as a volunteer or worker in an artistic setting on a short-term basis. Design/methodology/approach This paper is a review of sources drawn from articles in law journals, newspapers, etc. Findings The findings of this paper suggest that there is a need for reform of the law. Research limitations/implications This paper focuses on improving the rights of Fringe workers who have a history of being neglected or abused. Practical implications This paper ensures improved rights for Fringe workers. Social implications This paper analyses issues that are relevant for all workers in the arts at festivals, etc., throughout the UK. Originality/value This paper is extremely original.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAs the population ages, older adults are increasingly expected to play multiple productive roles. This study examined how hours of paid or unpaid work were associated with volunteering among older Japanese. Data came from the 2012 National Survey of the Japanese Elderly, a nationwide survey of Japanese aged 60 and older (N = 1,324). We performed multinominal logistic regression analyses to predict volunteering (regular or occasional versus non-volunteer) based on hours of paid work and unpaid work for family consisting of sick/disabled care, grandchild care and household chores. Those who worked moderate hours were most likely to be a regular volunteer while working 150 hours or more per month had a lower probability of volunteering, regardless of whether the work was paid or unpaid. Thus, full-time level work competed with volunteering for both paid and unpaid work for family, but it was more so for paid work. By types of activities, doing household chores and substantial grandchild care were positively associated with volunteering, and the latter complementary relationship was explained by a larger community network among grandparents. Our findings indicate that delaying retirement from full-time paid work may reduce the supply of regular volunteers in the community. Thus, policies to increase part-time work for older adults as well as the types of volunteer work in which paid workers can participate are necessary.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Qualitative methods are proving to be important tools for studying the multi-faceted experience of living with aging, with a focus on the arts. Ethnographic methods are productive ways to discover and examine music in everyday life. Systematically studying the normal and often taken-for-granted ways aging adults experience music, in the full range of settings where they can be found, can abide by the first rule of translational science research: to design and conduct research in order to facilitate the efficient and timely development and application of clinical and caring interventions. This presentation will review a series of ethnographic studies of music experiences in residential facilities, dementia respite groups, family, and hospice. We will suggest ways to apply findings from these studies to enlighten volunteer hospice workers’ protocols for care.

Abstract (sommario):
This article uses ethnographic data gathered from a parent cooperative nursery school to examine the strategies managers use to resolve role conflict in a multiplex role system, that is, a setting in which the relationship between managers and the people they supervise is based on more than one set of roles. In the organization under study, teachers functioned as both managers of, and service providers to, the parent volunteers they were charged with supervising. Parents' volunteer worker role was subject to conflict with and interruption by the expectations of their organizational client role, which constrained teachers' ability to direct parents' work in the classroom. Managerial effectiveness required responding to the demands and expectations of both sets of roles through a process of adaptive self-regulation. Teachers used several discrepancy detection strategies to gather information on parent volunteers' relative role salience, role transition readiness, and volunteer skills. Based on the information obtained, they devised discrepancy reduction strategies to focus parents' attention on the desired role for task performance and to reduce discrepancies between parents' expectations for managerial behavior and their own actions. The most effective teachers were able to develop personal relationships with parent volunteers, elicit knowledge about parents' role expectations and capabilities, and respond to the expectations of parents' multiple roles on an individualized basis.

Abstract (sommario):
In the Malaysian state of Sabah, public antipathy towards the presence of large numbers of migrant workers influences a widespread ignorance of the educational and other exclusions of their children. Children of migrants are rendered invisible in Sabahan cultural discourse because they are not recognized as proper subjects, or even as ‘normal’ children. Cultural denial of such children’s circumstances can be seen in local newspaper reports that consider such children with reference to fears of ‘illegals’ and their threat to future Sabahan citizens. This discourse draws on a particular understanding of child deservingness, and utilizes what Cohen describes as ‘neutralization techniques’. However, such apparently wilful blindness can best be understood by considering it on a spectrum of different forms of ignorance and denial. This includes the blatant lack of recognition afforded by powerful individuals who should be more aware of the children of their workers, the humanitarian blindness of volunteer teachers who over-emphasize the saving power of education, and the complex and situational ignorance of children of migrants themselves. Appreciating other, potentially more benign or protective, forms of denial is crucial to understanding how ignorance of the complexity of the situation of children of migrants continues, even among those hoping to resolve it.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract With the simultaneous growth of the manufacturing and service industries and the rapid expansion of information and communication technology, what do Chinese workers actually do in order to survive, and what methodological approaches are useful for exploring their subjectivity? In this article, the labor trajectory of Zuo Mei, a young migrant woman, is traced over six and a half years. The author relates Zuo's experience to what Mario Tronti calls the “social factory,” where the extraction of surplus occurs not just on the factory floor but also through social relations inside and outside multiple workplaces; at the intersection of factory, service, volunteer, and domestic labor; encompassing urban and rural, waged and unwaged, (re)productive and distributive, and on- and offline work. By detailing the interactions between these multiple forms of labor, the article argues that Zuo's suffering does not end outside the factory but extends to wherever social relations are capitalized, unveiling how alienation results from the resistance to that alienation.

Abstract (sommario):
Regardless of their particular field of practice, social workers increasingly serve the growing population of older adults in the United States. This article describes the process of integrating an experiential component into a Baccalaureate Social Work (BSW) course involving 75 BSW students. Reflections on the strengths and challenges during 3 years of the course and a successful sustainability strategy are discussed. Three methods of curriculum infusion were added to a required course: (a) guest speakers, (b) required volunteer hours, and (c) written reflections and class presentations. We discovered that students’ attitudes toward working with older adults were changed following their experience in this course. Cognizant of the difficulty introducing additional hours and content to a full course agenda, we advocate for curriculum change that includes an experiential component together with classroom discussion and activities. We provide details of our process of implementation and sustainability that might help guide similar course adaptations to increase BSW student exposure to working with older adults.

Abstract (sommario):
Although there have been a handful of studies examining the work of chaplains and prison volunteers in a Western setting, few have endeavored to conduct research into the experiences of religious workers in Asian penitentiaries. To fill this gap, this article reports on exploratory research examining the work of a selected group of religious workers in Hong Kong prisons. A total of 17 religious workers were interviewed: 10 prison chaplains and 7 Buddhist volunteers who paid regular prison visits. Qualitative findings generated from in-depth interviews present three themes: the range of religious activities performed, the importance of religion for the rehabilitation of inmates, and the hope of continued religious support to prisoners after discharge. The significance of this research is that it sheds light on the understudied work of prison chaplains and volunteers in Hong Kong and portrays the difference between the works of the Christian ministry and Buddhist volunteers.

Abstract (sommario):
Background Despite progress in vaccination coverage, timeliness of childhood vaccination remains a challenge in many settings. We aimed to assess if mobile phone-based reminders and incentives to health workers and caregivers could increase timely neonatal vaccination in a rural, low-resource setting. Methods We conducted an open-label cluster randomized controlled 1:1:1 trial with three arms in 15 communities in Northern Ghana. Communities were randomized to 1) a voice call reminder intervention; 2) a community health volunteer (CHV) intervention with incentivized rewards; 3) control. In the voice call reminder arm, a study staff member made voice calls to mothers shortly after birth to encourage vaccination and provide personalized information about available vaccination services. In the incentive arm, CHVs promoted infant vaccination and informed women with recent births about available vaccination opportunities. Both CHVs and women were provided small monetary incentives for on-time early infant vaccination in this arm, delivered using mobile phone-based banking applications. No study activities were conducted in control communities. A population-based survey compared vaccination coverage across arms in the pre-intervention and intervention periods. The primary endpoint was completion of at least one dose of Polio vaccine within 14 days of life and BCG vaccination within 28 days of life. Results Six-hundred ninety births were identified; 106, 88, and 88 from pre-intervention and 150, 135, and 123 in the intervention period, in the control, voice call reminder and CHV incentive arms, respectively. In adjusted intent-to-treat analysis, voice call reminders were associated with 10.5 percentage point (95% CI: 4.0, 17.1) higher coverage of on-time vaccination, while mobile phone-based incentives were associated with 49.5 percentage point (95% CI: 26.4, 72.5) higher coverage. Conclusion Community-based interventions using mobile phone technologies can improve timely early vaccination coverage. A CHV approach with incentives to community workers and caregivers was a more effective strategy than voice call reminders. The impact of vaccination “nudges” via voice calls may be constrained in settings where network coverage and phone ownership are limited. Trial registration This trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov; NCT03797950.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose of the study: This exploration was intended to check the link of generosity upon resilience, spirituality, and psychological adjustment among youth. Methodology: Purposive sample of volunteer Youth workers (N = 175) of welfare and charity organizations from three major Pakistani cities (age range 19 to 28 years both male and female) were part of the study. International Personality Item Pool scale; sub-constructs of Generosity and Spirituality from Values in Action scale, Psychological Well-Being (PWB), and the Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were used to measure concepts in the current exploration. Data were analyzed using SPSS 23 version. Pearson correlation was used to check correlation among variables. The prediction was checked through linear regression. Lastly, an independent sample t-test was used to analyze demographics. Main Findings: Significant positive relationship of generosity with spirituality, resilience, and psychological well-being among youth was found. Spirituality was positively predicted by generosity; whereas psychological wellbeing was positively predicted by resilience. Female youth had high generosity and was more resilient but spirituality and psychological well-being were the same across genders. Youth from joint families was more generous and resilient than those from nuclear families. Implications of this study: Study findings have sound practical implications for policymakers, community activists, and social / health psychologists to understand the generosity phenomena and how it can be vital for building a sustainable and progressive community. Suggestions for future researchers along with present study limitations have also been discussed. Novelty/Originality of this study: This is empirical research and all the data is based upon natural human behavior without any manipulation.

Abstract (sommario):
BackgroundCurrently, about 40 million people in the United States live in poverty, one of the most significant social determinants of health. Nurses and social workers must understand the effect of living in poverty on their clients' health and quality of life.PurposeNurses and social workers will encounter persons living in poverty. Therefore, beginning in their undergraduate education, health professions students must be aware of their attitudes towards poverty and how poverty affects health.MethodsThe Community Action Poverty Simulation was conducted with nursing and social work students at a small liberal arts institution. The Attitudes toward Poverty-Short Form (ATP-SF) and Beliefs Related to Poverty and Health (BRPH) tools were used pre- and postsimulation to assess students' attitudes about poverty and beliefs about the relationship between poverty and health. An emotional response plan was created to address participants' emotional responses by providing a separate space on-site and information about future resources.ResultsThe ATP-SF showed a significant overall difference (p < .001) between pre- and postsimulation surveys, indicating a shift toward a structural explanation of poverty; the BRPH showed that participants believed poverty is the result of illness and inability to work (p < .01).ConclusionThis study supports poverty simulation use to promote awareness of attitudes towards those living in poverty and how poverty impacts health. Recommendations include using more community resource volunteers with first-hand poverty experience, allowing students to role-play adults or older teens in the simulation, and including other health professions students.

Abstract (sommario):
The beginning of the military aggression by the Russian Federation induced the suspension of education at all levels. Starting from March 14th, the training has continued in a remote format. But, although all educational institutions had the experience of distance learning, teaching during the war revealed its own features. During the war in Ukraine, health care facilities remain a military target, causing casualties among medical personnel. This, together with medical workers` abduction and migration, resulted in a shortage of medical staff. Under such conditions, the contribution of senior students and higher medical institution graduates was significant. Therefore, the continuation of medical education during the war is of great importance for an effective health care system functioning. The aim. Highlight the experience of distance learning organisation at the clinical department during the war and the problems were discovered during the class. Materials and methods. Classes were held daily with the mandatory synchronous and asynchronous parts, and the organisational component ensured their connection. The asynchronous component was organised by answering an extended clinical case, which included several theoretical questions and five mandatory tasks. To decrease the load for the teacher, the time limit for answering clinical case has been set, and a template of standard comments has been created. In addition, students were required to answer KROK2 tests. The synchronous component of distance learning was implemented using a Google Meet video conference, held daily according to a pre-approved schedule. In order to increase the level of student's communication skills, improve clinical thinking, as well as the practical application of the acquired knowledge, a "clinical" simulation was carried out during each video conference. Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, institutions of higher medical education had a well-established mechanism of the distance learning organisation. However, active hostilities on the territory of Ukraine led to additional obstacles. The lack of sufficient resources to meet the physiological needs limited the students' opportunities to study because, according to A. Maslow, the fulfilment of basic needs is important to an effective cognitive activity. The sound of air raid sirens required interrupting the online part and descending into a bomb shelter. A chronic shortage of basic needs realisation led to a disturbance of the emotional state and consequently hindered the effective processing and memorisation of the material. The absence of stable Internet and being in different time zones also interfered with efficient education. Students' participation in volunteer activities impeded their ability to engage in and concentrate on the educational process. Conclusions. Despite the sudden start of military aggression, institutions of higher medical education quickly switched to distance learning. As in the times of the COVID-19 lockdown, online education consisted of synchronous and asynchronous parts connected through the organisational component. However, active military operations and the constant threat of aerial attacks have created additional obstacles: security issues during the study, emotional state of students and teachers, problems with the Internet, power blackout, and being in different time zones. In addition, students` volunteer activities impeded full engagement in the learning process.

Abstract (sommario):
This article offers an analysis of a business mentorship event in Fredericton, NB, which targeted immigrants sponsored through the New Brunswick Provincial Nominee Program (NBPNP)—an economic revitalization program designed to attract foreign business people and skilled workers to settle in the province. Applying Derrida’s concept of hospitality as a technology of whiteness, we examine the stated and implicitly understood expectations for the NBPNP, including the mechanisms at play for regulating newcomer’s behavior and comportment. We locate our analysis in the context of a regionally expressed Canadian multiculturalism, extending the relevance of our findings beyond Fredericton to Atlantic Canada. We ask: how do associated discourses of whiteness, multiculturalism and hospitality come into play to shape dynamics of power existing between hosts (settlement workers, various shadow state actors and mentor volunteers) and racialized newcomer guests? As a racialized threshold event, the Sip, Greet and Meet facilitated an exchange of hospitality such that the New Brunswick native hosts marked newcomers as perpetual arrivants, while holding the immigrants responsible for the success of their settlement in the Fredericton region. We show how the discourses regarding newcomers’ duties cleared nativist inhabitants of any accountability for the success of immigrant settlement. We also show how the process of welcoming conveyed a message that the future success of the local community, the province and even Atlantic Canada depended on the business class immigrants’ ability to serve as dutiful and grateful guests.

Abstract (sommario):
This research relies on data from a survey conducted in 1981 to explore the potential negative and positive consequences of having multiple roles. The responses of 500 employed women to questions about self-esteem, satisfaction with careers, partners, and children, and perceptions of life stress and pleasure were examined. The number of roles held by respondents ranged from 1 to 5 (worker, partner, parent, volunteer, and student). The results indicated that higher self-esteem and greater job satisfaction were associated with holding more roles. However, neither marital nor parental satisfaction was consistently related to the number of roles held. Although the majority of working women reported their lives to be stressful, this finding was independent of the number of roles held, and women with more roles did not consistently report a greater number of stressful life domains. These findings suggest that, for employed women, having multiple roles may enhance psychological well-being.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of abnormal audiometry results among university students. Methods A total of 88 volunteers participated in an audiometry screening on World Hearing Day at Srinakharinwirot University, Bangkok. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire, followed by an otoscope examination. Subsequently, a hearing test was conducted using air conduction at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz in a mobile soundproof room. Bivariate logistic regression was employed to analyze the risks. Results The results revealed that the prevalence of abnormal audiometry results was 6.82% (95% CIs = 1.45–12.19%), with high-frequency losses being the most common pattern. Notably, the prevalence of this abnormality was highest in the faculty of Fine Arts. Although several factors, such as gender, noise sensitivity, musical instrument use, ENT problems, and the learning environment, were associated with abnormal results, none reached statistical significance due to the limited sample size. In conclusion, various factors were found to be related to abnormal audiometry results, with the field of study and the learning environment being among them. Discussion and conclusion Consequently, it is recommended that the university implement a hearing conservation program for its scholars to promote their future health and well-being as potential healthy workers.

Abstract (sommario):
Research finds the behavioral implications of public service motivation (PSM) in prosocial behaviors such as volunteering, and explains the higher rate of volunteering among public and nonprofit workers with PSM. Although existing research focuses on the link between employee’s PSM and general volunteering, little is known about how workers’ volunteering activities differ across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. This study examines differences between public and nonprofit employees’ volunteering focusing on the types of organizations where they volunteer. The results indicate distinctive patterns of volunteering between public and nonprofit sector workers: Nonprofit workers are more likely to volunteer in religious and social/community organizations, whereas public workers are more likely to volunteer in educational organizations. The findings of this study call for a more systematic and multifaceted approach to understanding the link between PSM and volunteering.

Abstract (sommario):
The author presents empirical information on the extent and nature of advocacy activity among a random sample of social workers. Almost all employed social workers in the sample performed both job-related and volunteer advocacy. They averaged less than five hours per week of on-the-job advocacy and less than one hour per week of volunteer advocacy. Agency goals and functions as well as job characteristics strongly influence the amount of job-related advocacy a social worker does. As a rule, social workers tend to be involved in case advocacy while at work and class advocacy while volunteering. Social workers were case oriented in their advocacy for or with their clients and were inclined to use approaches internal to their agency. An advocacy research agenda is recommended.

Abstract (sommario):
We study the propensity of persons with disabilities to engage in volunteer activity using the Participation and Activity Limitation Survey (PALS). Our principal focus is on the effects of various income support programs on persons with disabilities participation in volunteer activities because income support programs can differ with respect to their treatment of unpaid work. For example, workers’ compensation programs embody strong disincentives to volunteering while public disability insurance programs explicitly encourage unpaid work. We find that workers’ compensation is associated with decreases in the probability of volunteering while public disability insurance is associated with increases in the propensity to volunteer. The relevance of these results to both theories of volunteerism and public policy is discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
COVID-19 has caused a shortage of healthcare workers and has strained healthcare systems globally. Pre-registered healthcare students with training have a duty of care and can support the healthcare workforce. This study explored factors influencing the willingness of final-year nursing students to volunteer during the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of professional identity in volunteering as healthcare workers, and strategies to improve future volunteering uptakes and processes. A qualitative study using focus-group discussions was conducted. Final-year nursing students who volunteered, students who did not volunteer, and lecturers who supervised student volunteers were recruited. Interviews were conducted online, video-recorded, and transcribed verbatim. A thematic analysis was used. The themes were “wavering thoughts on volunteering”, “bringing out ‘the nurse’ in students through volunteering” and “gearing up to volunteer”. Findings suggested the need to look beyond the simplicity of altruism to the role of professional identity, operational, and motivational factors to explain nursing students’ decision to volunteer and their volunteer behavior. Providing accommodation, monetary and academic-related incentives, supporting the transitionary phase from students to “professional volunteers”, promoting cohesive and positive staff–student volunteer relationships, and establishing a volunteer management team are strategies identified to improve volunteering uptake and operational processes. Our findings advocate strategic partnerships between hospitals/communities and academic institutions in providing various healthcare services during pandemics.

Abstract (sommario):
This research is a result of the collaborative relationship between the Creative People, Products and Places (CP3) Research Centre at the University of South Australia and Festival City Adelaide (FCA). FA manages the consortium of South Australia’s eleven major arts and culture festivals. This report examines the current literature on volunteering in the arts sector and surveys the experiences of senior members of the Festival Volunteer Network, a platform managed by FCA that connects three thousand volunteers to the eleven festivals. In December of 2021 a survey was issued to the Festival Volunteer Network. Researchers received 176 responses (n=176). The survey was comprised of both qualitative and quantitative questions. The qualitative responses were coded thematically using NVivo software. Thematic coding was applied to each question separately. In order of recurrence in survey responses, the reasons why participants volunteered were for a more immersive festival experience, to connect with other volunteers, and to give back to the sector. Challenges to volunteering for senior patrons were finding the time to volunteer more, difficult patrons, and dealing with difficult festival managers. Skills learned while volunteering fell under the categories of festival management, event-related skills, customer service skills, and communication. Most senior volunteers maintained social contacts that they made while volunteering. This project builds upon existing research on volunteer labor at festivals and offers recommendations for improving volunteer management.

Abstract (sommario):
Volunteers are considered a core component of special events and they have proved to be an asset to the execution of special events. Although motivations of volunteers have received a great deal of attention from many organizations and individuals in the private sector, little research has been done on motivations of volunteers in the public sector, or within the federal government. Therefore, this article identified motivational factors that prompt federal government workers to volunteer at a government-related special event. A survey was used to gather data from a volunteer sample of 263 individuals who had volunteered for public sector special events in recent years. Exploratory factor analysis and t test were employed to establish motivations that stimulate public sector employees to volunteer for special events and further determine the differences in motivation between females and males. The results showed that government workers mostly volunteer for purposive motive and external motive. In addition, gender played significant roles on egotistic and purposive motives. Thus, this research provides a unique theoretical contribution to research in event management by advancing our understanding of the process by which factors associated with motivation can lead to federal government workers volunteering at a government-related special event; subsequently, impacting how event planners and organizers of public sector special events market to and recruit volunteers.

It also provides information on the activities of the workers ‘and peasants’ militia in the early years of Soviet power, namely that there were two types of militiamen: state, mainly city militiamen, and volunteer militia. It is noted that the provision of police volunteers is the responsibility of the local population, which, in turn, has a certain «response» in the protection of law and order, the protection of state interests among the population.Index Terms: police, workers and peasants police, Soviet government, “Volunteer police”, supply, “Two weeks of aid”, army, Revolutionary Committee, Red Army, printing, illiteracy

Abstract (sommario):
Background. Community health workers (CHWs), often called “health promotion volunteers” in Japan, are individuals who act as a natural helping resource in the community. Aim. This study tested the efficacy of a CHW-based intervention to improve dietary habits among community-dwelling older people in Japan, using a controlled, crossover design. Method. Seventy-eight people aged 65 to 74 years with poor dietary variety living in four administrative districts in Hikone City (Shiga Prefecture, Japan) were nonrandomly allocated to an immediate-intervened group (IIG; n = 41) or a delayed-intervened group (DIG; n = 37). Participants joined a biweekly, four-session program (120 minutes/session), comprising “CHW drama-style lectures,” “group discussion among participants and CHWs,” “tasting of dishes,” and “take-home practical activities.” For the initial 2-month period, the IIG received the intervention and the DIG did not. The groups were crossed over for the subsequent 2-month period. The primary outcome measure was participants’ dietary variety score (score range: 0-10). Results. The dietary variety score in the IIG significantly increased in the initial 2-month period compared with the DIG (effect size 1.60 points; 95% confidence interval: 0.75, 2.45). The intervention had a similar effect in the DIG in the subsequent 2-month period. Moreover, an analysis within the IIG showed that the intervention effects persisted for at least 2 months after the intervention. Conclusions. The CHW-based intervention improved dietary habits among older people. Our findings provide evidence that a CHW-based natural helping approach is a possible solution to promote healthy aging in the community.

Abstract (sommario):
I would like to present a specific kind of social structure – that of a community of about 50 Bulgarians who live in the St. Georgi Zografski monastery in the monastic republic of Mount Athos (Holy Mountain) within the territory of the Republic of Greece. Over the last 2-3 decades the number of inhabitants has increased so as the interest in it. The community is visited, except the pilgrims and volunteer Bulgarian workers, by the people who come for a week every month to donate their labor to the monastery. They are called charisans (volunteers). They come from different parts of Bulgaria to work for free, i.e. to donate their labor to a monastic community. To do so, they have to take a vacation, to pay for a visa and transport, which is not easy for inhabitants of the poorest EU country. Interestingly, their number is increasing from year to year. What causes these people to leave secular life forever or to come regularly with the cost of deprivation? I look for an answer to this question, apart from Orthodox and history evidences, (Metropolitan Hierophaeus (Vlachos) 2011) and through the anthropological method of participation – observation and interviews – conversations with monks, volunteers, pilgrims.

Abstract (sommario):
Paid and volunteer crowd work have emerged as a means for harnessing human intelligence for performing diverse tasks. However, little is known about the relative performance of volunteer versus paid crowd work, and how financial incentives influence the quality and efficiency of output. We study the performance of volunteers as well as workers paid with different monetary schemes on a difficult real-world crowdsourcing task. We observe that performance by unpaid and paid workers can be compared in carefully designed tasks, that financial incentives can be used to trade quality for speed, and that the compensation system on Amazon Mechanical Turk creates particular indirect incentives for workers. Our methodology and results have implications for the ideal choice of financial incentives and motivates further study on how monetary incentives influence worker behavior in crowdsourcing.

Abstract (sommario):
This article employs a boundary work framework to analyze how volunteers from two nonprofit human services organizations navigated the tensions between volunteerism and professionalism. Based on interview data and analysis of organizational documents, the study found that volunteers at the first organization, fundraisers for child health promotion and parent education, dichotomized volunteerism and professionalism as incompatible social systems with divergent objectives, practices, and tools. Volunteers at the second organization, which provides emergency ambulance services, engaged in constant boundary crossing, oscillating between a volunteer and professional approach to tasks and relationships depending on the context. In both cases, paid staff and members of the public affected participants’ ability to engage in boundary work. The study offers insights for nonprofit organizations wishing to professionalize their volunteer workforce by specifying how volunteer job types, organizational structure, and interactional partners’ feedback impact volunteers’ ability to engage in boundary crossing, passing, and boundary spanning.

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate health workers’ knowledge, self - preparedness and willingness to volunteer for outbreak response and perceived institutional readiness to manage confirmed or suspected cases of COVID-19.Methods: Across-sectional study was carried out among 300 consenting healthcare workers in a COVID19 treatment facility in Edo state, Nigeria. Data were collected between April and May 2020 using selfadministered questionnaires. Analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, with Chisquare test and logistic regression applied with a 95% confidence interval. All ethical considerations were met. Results: One hundred and seventeen (39.0%) respondents were willing to volunteer in the response, with respondents who were confident in their ability to suspect a case, communicate risk effectively and who believed the facility should be a treatment centre being 3.55, 2.07 and 2.30 times more likely to volunteer respectively (P< 0.001, P = 0.04 and P = 0.02 respectively). Two hundred and seven (69.0%) respondents felt the facility was ready to manage confirmed cases. Management commitment 255 (85.0%) was the factor acknowledged as most indicative that the facility was ready to handle cases, with availabiltiy of personal protective wears as the least mentioned 166 (55.3%).Conclusion: Many health workers who should be in the frontline were unwilling to volunteer to manage cases, though perceived facility readiness was high. Health managers should take steps to address identified barriers and provide conducive work environments. Keywords: COVID-19, Health providers, Willingness
