Many tasks could drive the evolution of bird sensory systems. Key candidates are flight, foraging, predator detection, and reproduction. Comparative analysis of visual fields and retinal structures shows functionally significant differences in the vision of even closely related species. These are best explained by foraging being the primary driver of vision in birds, and this is traded-off against the demands of predator detection. The key task is the control of bill position and timing its arrival at a target. This is achieved by the extraction of information from the optic flow-field which expands symmetrically about the bill when it is travelling towards a target. The provision of such flow-fields is the prime function of binocular vision. Informational demands for flight control are met within constraints determined by those for precise bill control. Other sensory capacities also appear to be driven primarily by the informational demands of foraging.

ISIS Propaganda offers a comprehensive overview and analysis of the Islamic State’s (IS) propaganda. Combining a range of different theoretical perspectives from across the social sciences and using rigorous methods, the authors pursue several interconnected tasks. They trace the origins of IS’s message, they lay bare the strategic logic guiding its evolution, they examine each of its many components (magazines, videos, music, social media, etc.) and show how they work together to radicalize audiences’ worldviews, and they highlight the challenges such a “full-spectrum propaganda” raises in terms of counterterrorism. The volume hence not only represents a one-stop point for any analyst of IS and Salafi-jihadism, but also a rich contribution to the study of text and visual propaganda, radicalization and political violence, and international security.

This chapter examines how the political ideas that would come to shape the civil rights movement in America were fomented and sometimes nearly thwarted by focusing on the many visual encounters with the dead and disfigured body of Emmett Till—some in the flesh, some mediated by photography. The chapter analyzes how the decision of Mamie Till-Mobley, Emmett Till's mother, to have an open-casket funeral for her son made possible the wide-scale circulation of photographs of his body. An examination of the courtroom in which Till's murderers were tried makes clear the paradoxical uses of his image. This use demonstrates that the political utility of seeing another's disfigured body lies in recognizing that the violence enacted upon the Other is also violence enacted upon the Self. The chapter offers a psychoanalytic and deconstructionist interpretation of recognition, which is figured as a central project in the struggle for black liberation and civil rights.

"The manual consists of 5 modules containing up-to-date information on the organizational and legal issues examination of temporary disability (ETD), the legislative framework, the principles of examination of temporary disability, modern regulatory requirements for the issuance of certificates of incapacity for work, including the procedure for the formation of certificates of incapacity for work in the form of an electronic document in case of illness, during care for a sick family member The issues of the activity of the medical commission of a medical organization concerning the conduct of ETD, the analysis of morbidity with temporary disability and the control of the Social insurance fund of the Russian Federation over the organization of ETD were considered and reasonably by issuing certificates of incapacity for work in medical organizations. The materials of the manual are illustrated, which allows you to visually present the questions being studied, contain test tasks and situational tasks for self-control. In the present edition “The stylistic and poetical-compositional system of a fairy tale” in 2 volumes, the author's works in the field of the study of the stylistic system of a fairy tale, carried out within the framework of an experimental direction in folklore studies, are combined. The study of the problem in this direction was undertaken by the author on the initiative of the outstanding scientist V.M. Gatsak, Doctor of Philology, Corresponding Member RAS, and was conducted over a number of years. The monograph “Oral stylistic foundations of a fairy tale. Experimental study on the abkhaz material”, which constituted 1 volume of this edition “The stylistic and poetical-compositional system of a fairy tale”, is devoted to topical problems of folklore studies, dictated by the urgent need for a comprehensive audio-visual study of folklore style. The work was carried out according to a special methodology, providing for the study of samples of oral poetry in their living existence in the light of the requirements of the experimental direction in folklore with the obligatory use of repeated recordings of fairy texts at different times, as well as film and photo documents. The aim and task of the research is to reveal the peculiarities of the style of fairy tale narration in their conditionality by the laws of preservation and transmission of traditions. The section “Appendices” contains samples of tabular analysis and intonation recording of typed repetitions, a package of film and photographic documents, a disc with a recording of the text being executed and rhythmic segments.

SEE! HEAR! CUT! KILL!: Experiencing Friday the 13th, is the first book entirely devoted to the analysis of the Friday the 13 th franchise. The story a film tells is usually filtered through a particular perspective, or point of view. This book argues that slasher films, and the Friday the 13th movies particularly, use all the stylistic tools at their disposal to create a complex and emotionally intense approach to perspective, which develops and shifts across the decades. Chapter one discusses the history of perspective in horror, and the different critical conversations around this. Chapter two looks at the use of camerawork, specifically point-of-view camerawork in the way these films visually communicate perspective. The fourth chapter talks about the way sound and editing work together to communicate perspective and experience in the death sequences these movies capitalize upon. The fourth chapter considers the perspective of viewers, and how each movie speaks to viewers who are either familiar or unfamiliar with the ongoing story in the series. The final chapter first explains how these trends look across a chronological timeline, and what this tells us about the historical development of perspective before looking at the influence these stylistic approaches have had on ‘serious’ film, particularly those recognized by the Hollywood critical establishment.
