Au début du XXe siècle, le Chili et plus largement l’Amérique latine connaissent une situation générale de luttes ouvrières, de mouvements syndicalistes revendiquant des droits et une place dans la société bien longtemps niés par le pouvoir en place, conduisant à des affrontements violents dont les conséquences vont dépasser le périmètre de l’entreprise concernée. Au Chili, le mouvement ouvrier dans les années 1950 devient alors une véritable force politique et la situation politique chilienne permet d’illustrer ces conflits. À cette même époque nait dans cette agitation socio-politique un mouvement musical et culturel, la Nouvelle Chanson Chilienne, qui, s’il se revendique chilien, s’inscrit également dans une logique socioculturelle latino-américaine et plus particulièrement dans les conflits sociaux, en faveur des secteurs populaires. Aussi, c’est à travers une sélection de textes de chansons, la « Cantata de Santa Maria de Iquique » ainsi que certaines chansons de Violeta Parra et de Victor Jara que nous chercherons ici à illustrer une situation de conflit, en réponse à cette violence faite au peuple, qu’il s’agisse d’une grève ou du délogement des secteurs pauvres des « poblaciones ». Comment la nouvelle chanson illustre-t-elle les conflits sociaux propres au Chili et plus largement à l’Amérique latine au début du XXe siècle, à la fois acte de mémoire et de revendication politique et identitaire ?

The Metropolitan Area of ​​Concepción (MAC) was one of the hardest hit areas by political represión and human right violations during the dictatorship. Despite the impact of it, the urban development of las decades has been erasing the materialness of memories linked with the period. Emerging the neediness to map places of memory to dimension and territorially understand them, through geolocation and analysis of its spatiality and territorial distribution. In this regard, a wide distribution of spaces is identified that can be defined as "silenced places" and "places made invisible by daily life". In fact, a disproportion is observed between the quantity of events of political violence and violations of human rights and the scarcity of public spaces that account for these events. Also, it is relevant to verify a certain inadequacy of the existing spaces for contemporary development of memory practices, both in urban and architectural terms, raising questions about how social memories linked to the dictatorship are currently crystallized.

Between the 1970s and 1980s in Turkey, there were various problems such as rapid urbanization, migration from village to city, economical problems such as embargo and neoliberalism and political violence over the military coups. Our study focuses on the problems experienced by children which lead to child victimization through Turkish movies. In our research, we used deduction and induction methods together. Based on the political and economic developments in the period between 1970 and 1980, we looked at how these dynamics were reflected in the films by thematic analyze method. Here are the themes that we found in the films which are commonly used in relation to children in cities and their urbanization, child marriage, smuggling, political violence and education. In conclusion of the Turkish press and movies and according to the interviews we did with the people who witnessed those periods, the problems related to children manifest themselves quite heavily and negatively. The Turkish society, which is experiencing a rapid urbanization process, has continued the patriarchal, sexist, religious-conservative and statist discourse they brought from the feudal village life in modern cities as well. While this is a problem that the press and cinema criticize with a common approach, it is seen that children are also a part of this process.

This paper seeks to investigate the process of political radi-calization and the exercise of popular revolutionary violence, and the corresponding improvement of torture as a practice of state political repression in Chile, in the period prior to the coup d'état of September 11, 1973. For these purposes, the repressive practice of torture in the period 1964-1973, exer-cised by the state against those defined as political enemies by the governments of the time, in correlative response to the radicalization of direct actions in which they used revolution-ary violence in the public space, will be addressed. There is evidence of an escalation of revolutionary violence, with the appearance of different types of armed actions, which were unknown during the Frei Montalva government (1964-1970) and reached their peak during the Allende presidency (1970-1973) with the outbreak of the only suicide bombing in Chil-ean history. In direct correlation, the methods of torture worsened with the appearance, under the Frei government, of the use of drugs, the breaking of bones and the introduction of Brazilian hanging techniques, and during the Allende presidency with the application of torture to pregnant women, resulting in the death of the fetus.

A diferencia de otros periodos y acontecimientos históricos en Chile -que concitan un trabajo más sistemático de interpretación, revisión y recopilación de fuentes documentales- el problema de la violencia política durante los años de la Unidad Popular acusa un desarrollo desigual e insuficiente. Como una forma de subsanar tal vacío, este artículo propone reexaminar una serie de archivos documentales que hasta la fecha han sido escasamente trabajados y que pueden aportar nuevos datos y perspectivas de estudio. La mayor parte de estos documentos está centrada en una dimensión individual de la violencia política de aquellos años, particularmente respecto a los actores sociales que la materializaron o padecieron. A partir de estos documentos se puede reconstruir una parte significativa de algunos de los problemas más críticos por los que atravesó la vía chilena al socialismo. La exposición de los archivos y documentos reseñados es precedida por una contextualización y discusión bibliográfica que proporciona un marco de análisis más pertinente para entender el aporte y utilidad de dichos recursos.

Despite a global food surplus, almost half of the world's less developed countries suffer significant problems concerning food. Most social science and policy discussions of food security make the “food availability” assumption that increased food supply is the key to reducing hunger. Critics argue, however, that increased food supply has little impact on hunger and that the primary culprits are entrenched inequality and militarism. A lagged panel analysis of food supply and child hunger rates (1970–1990) shows that the food supply has only modest effects on child hunger rates and that food supply is structurally rooted in development processes (domestic investment, urban bias, foreign capital penetration) while child hunger is politically based in arms imports, internal violence and political democratization. Population pressure, tapped by increased age dependency, undermines both the supply of food and the population's access to it, and cultural dualism magnifies the effects of population pressure on child hunger. The effects of economic growth “trickle down” to affect both food supply and child hunger, and economic growth is also positively correlated with political democratization, suggesting there is no short-term “trade-off” between growth, democratization, and social equity.

The Pedagogy of Violence. Children’s Literature in Sweden at the End of the 1960’s This article argues that the Vietnam War had a massive impact on children’s literature published in Sweden at the end of the 1960’s. Numerous children’s books portrayed the child as confronting the horrifying scenes from the Vietnam War through television news reports. These books indicate the need for a literature that in some way could explain the violence taking place in the surrounding world to small children. The examples provided in this article illustrate the scale of this impact but also the different ways in which authors dealt with the situation. The author’s choice of aesthetic form and genre was deeply influenced by political as well as pedagogical concerns following new conceptions of child care and child development. The understanding of the connection between, on the one hand, violence and aggression and, one the other, children and play was inspired by psychodynamic theories that offered new impulses to the discussion about the function of children’s literature. However, these conceptions of childhood, play and fantasy were to a considerable extent in conflict with not only the demand for a politically engaged and profoundly realistic literature but also the question of how much violence and darkness the young child could take in and deal with.

Notre thèse de doctorat propose une histoire critique d'une organisation politique armée d'extrême gauche, Ie Mouvement de la Gauche Révolutionnaire (Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria ou MIR) du Chili. Elle démontre, face à des interprétations dominantes, que Ie MIR ne fut ni importe et étranger a la culture politique chilienne, ni imperméable a la conjoncture nationale qui l'a vu naître, en 1965, et s'affirmer sur la scène politique. La création du MIR s'explique plus par les longues trajectoires militantes de ses fondateurs et par la défaite électorale d'Allende en 1964 que par !'Impact de la Révolution cubaine. Les étudiants qui en assument la direction en 1967, souvent présentes comme l'incarnation du « Mai 68 » chilien, sont avant tout les héritiers de ces fondateurs et non les représentants d'une génération de gauche radicalement nouvelle. L'ancrage du MIR dans la culture politique nationale apparaît également a travers Ie succès qu'il rencontre au sein du milieu étudiant lors de la reforme universitaire promue par Ie gouvernement democrate-chretien (1964-1970) : Ie projet reformateur de la Democratie Chretienne a ainsi directement influence Ie projet « revolutionnaire » du MIR. L'usage de la lutte armee lui-meme, souvent considere comme la preuve de l'etrangete du Mouvement a un pays dit non violent par essence, fut d'ailleurs etonnamment modere et limite.

L'objectif de cette thèse est d'analyser la violence dans les photographies des photojournalistes au Chili et au Mexique dans les années 1980 et 1990. La recherche portera sur quinze cas qui seront analysés d'un point de vue technique et sémiologique, sur la base du schéma esthétique de Luciano Nanni. La méthodologie utilisée est qualitative avec des généralités comparatives, afin d'aborder les deux types de cas, chiliens et mexicains, dans la recherche de l'analyse de la violence dans les photographies enregistrées dans le contexte chronologique susmentionné. La recherche considère un regard exhaustif sur la violence depuis le néolithique, détectant des faits de violence systématique, jusqu'à des faits contemporains tels que l'importance de l'image, de la photographie et des manières de l'interpréter dans l'antiquité, comme piliers pour la lecture actuelle des cas et l'interprétation en considérant la charge historique des faits visibles pour la société. L'interprétation sémiologique incorpore une analyse technique de la communication que les images nous fournissent éventuellement. La recherche n'est pas moins importante, étant donné qu'il existe peu de recherches dans ce domaine, soit parce qu'elles ont été menées séparément, soit parce qu'elles n'abordent pas spécifiquement le phénomène de la violence du point de vue de la visualité, Ces éléments deviennent donc prépondérants pour l'élaboration d'une catégorisation et d'une signification des cas présentés ici, en tant que facteurs déterminants pour comprendre pourquoi la violence a été enregistrée et les motivations que les photojournalistes chiliens et mexicains ont pu avoir pour le faire. A priori, on peut détecter que la réflexion personnelle sur les faits : l'injustice sociale, la polarisation socio-économique, comme la dictature civilo-militaire au Chili, ont été des déclencheurs pour la création d'images avec la charge personnelle de leurs auteurs, et il est également possible d'identifier des objectifs dissemblables et/ou dissemblables entre les deux
The objective of this thesis is to analyze violence in the photographs of photojournalists in Chile and Mexico in the years 1980 - 1990. The research will take fifteen cases that will be analyzed technically and semiologically, based on Luciano Nanni's aesthetic scheme. The methodology used was qualitative with comparative from generalities, as a way of approaching both types of cases, Chilean and Mexican, in the search for the analysis of violence in the photographs recorded in the chronological context mentioned above. The research considers an exhaustive look at violence from the Neolithic, detecting facts of systematic violence, to contemporary facts such as the importance of the image, photography and the ways of interpreting it in antiquity, as pillars for the current reading of the cases and the interpretation considering the historical load of the visible facts for society. The semiology interpretation, incorporates a technical analysis in post of the communication eventually delivered by the images, the research is of no lesser importance, since the scarce investigative heritage in this area, either because its treatment has been carried out separately or because it does not specifically address the phenomenon of violence, from the visuality, Thus, these elements become preponderant for the elaboration of a categorization and significance of the cases presented here, as determinants to understand why violence was recorded and to know the motivations that Chilean and Mexican photojournalists may have had to do so. A priori it can be detected that the personal reflection of the facts: social injustice, socioeconomic polarization, such as the civil-military dictatorship in Chile, were triggers for the creation of images with the personal charge of their authors, thus being able to identify dissimilar and/or dissimilar objectives between both

Tesis para optar al grado de Doctora en Estudios Culturales Latinoamericanos
La violencia en el Chile dictatorial se despliega desde el instante mismo en que las fuerzas militares se movilizan para tomar el control del país, el 11 de septiembre de 1973, adquiriendo el carácter de una violencia de Estado. Un conjunto de prácticas, cuyo propósito es la aniquilación de los opositores y su reinserción en un orden de género tradicional , impactan directamente los cuerpos de hombres y mujeres, con efectos devastadores en el caso de los sobrevivientes. Este trabajo aborda el problema de la violencia política ejercida por la dictadura militar sobre los cuerpos de los opositores, a partir de la lectura y análisis de la indumentaria que cubre y descubre esos cuerpos. Se plantea aquí que esta indumentaria constituye una forma de relato autobiográfico por medio de la cual el sujeto estructura y expone su identidad. Las diferentes expresiones de violencia política significadas en el vínculo cuerpo-indumentaria- detención, tortura, ejecución, desaparición, prisión, exilio- fracturan dicho relato cuya recomposición futura se concretará parcialmente.

La violencia a la que fueron sometidos los menores en época de dictadura chilena, pasando a llevar su calidad de menor, es un tema que pareciera no haber sido abordado por alguna corriente historiográfica, ni tampoco por las autoridades del país. No podemos negar que desde el golpe de Estado hasta inclusive el día de hoy, las instituciones de Estado violan los DDHH continuamente, sin embargo específicamente en la dictadura con una duración de 17 años, hubo una violación sistemática de todo tipo de derechos nunca antes vistos en nuestro país.

La presente tesis de investigación doctoral intentará evidenciar que la operacionalización de la violencia directa en contra de miles de conciudadanos chilenos por parte de la dictadura cívico militar chilena, obedeció a un proceso de institucionalización de esa violencia al interior de la estructura burocrática del Estado que comenzó a configurarse desde el mismo 11 de septiembre de 1973. Asimismo, estas dos violencias, directa y estructural, obedecían a una tercera tipología de violencia, de fundamento cultural, legitimada históricamente por la elite conservadora desde su matriz ideológica doctrinaria.

Esta investigación tiene como objetivo estudiar el movimiento Frente Nacionalista Patria y Libertad entre los años 1970 a 1973. La investigación busca comprender el rol que pueden cumplir en un sistema político polarizado, como el existente en Chile en los años 70, los movimientos nacionalistas de extrema derecha, particularmente el rol de Patria y Libertad. En ese contexto se busca conocer el rol que tuvo este movimiento en el proceso de polarización política y quiebre del sistema democrático del periodo estudiado, a partir fundamentalmente de dos ejes: su componente ideológico anticomunista y sus estrategias “en la arena de combate”. Esto es, explicar el surgimiento de Patria y Libertad desde el anticomunismo como idea-fuerza de su acción política, no sólo como agente disruptivo y debilitador del sistema democrático, sino que su habilidad para lograr dar una dirección a la lucha anticomunista y también contra la Unidad Popular, a través de aunar fuerzas en un frente de masas de oposición que incorporaban a distintos actores sociales y políticos, buscando además implicar a las Fuerzas Armadas

En effet, c’est la première fois dans l’histoire de la littérature chilienne qu’une grande quantité de textes sont écrits et publiés depuis l’exil ou depuis des centres de détention.Considérant ce phénomène spécifique dans son temps, cette étude s’attache à identifier les figures de la mémoire dans le langage poétique à partir de la figuration de la violence, telle qu’elle s’exprime dans la production de six poètes, qui s’étend sur une période de quarante ans (1950-1980). L’analyse de ces œuvres met en évidence la capacité du langage poétique à transcender la codification d’un contexte aussi important qui n’est pourtant pas l’unique évènement marquant de violence d’Etat dans l’histoire du Chili. L’analyse d’un corpus de textes écrits par Nicanor Parra, Enrique Lihn et Jorge Teiller, références majeures de la poésie de Gonzalo Millán, Tomás Harris et Rodrigo Lira, est présentée selon une double perspective, linguistique et socio-littéraire. La première partie de cette thèse mobilise le concept de « sujet en procès », emprunté à la théorie du langage de Julia Kristeva, Cette perspective a pour ambition d’analyser dans quelle mesure et comment la figuration de la violence constitue une parole de la mémoire et un questionnement sur l’identité nationale dans la poésie chilienne. La deuxième partie s’appuie sur la perspective de la « théorie des champs » et du « pouvoir symbolique » tel que l’envisage Pierre Bourdieu pour analyser l’impact du discours historique de l’identité nationale et sa représentation de l’exercice de la violence dans les champs de la production politique et littéraire.Envisagées dans une perspective moins restreinte à leur contexte socio-historique immédiat de production, les relations qu’entretiennent le langage, la violence et le pouvoir figurent ainsi au cœur de cette recherche
The dictatorship of the military junta in Chile (09.11.1973-1990), the violence of which is all the more striking as it covers a very recent period in the history of this country, questions the autonomy of the symbolical system of the literary texts produced in this context. Indeed,it is the first time in the history of Chilean literature such an amount of texts have been written and published from exile or detention centres.Taking into account that this phenomenon is specific to its period, this study aims at studying the representations of memory in poetic language. It starts from the figuration of violence as it is expressed over a period of forty years (1950-1980) in six poets' production.The analysis of these works highlights the ability of poetic language to transcend the codification of so important a context, which is not, however, the only striking event of State violence in the history of Chile.The analysis of a collection of texts written by Nicanor Parra, Enrique Lihn and Jorge Teiller, major references of Gonzalo Millán, Tomás Harris and Rodrigo Lira 's poetry, is presented according a double perspective, linguistic as well as socio-litterary. The first part of this thesis focuses on the concept of the « subject in process », taken from Julia Kristeva's theory of language.This perspective aspires to analyze to what extent and how the representation of violence constitutes an expression of memory and a questioning about national identity in the Chilean poetry.The second part is based on the perspective of the theory of fields and the symbolic power as seen by Pierre Bourdieu in order to analyze the historical speech about national identity, and its representation of the exercise of violence in the fields of political and litterary production.Considered in a perspective which is less limited to their immediate socio-historical context of production, the relations maintained by language, violence and power, appear at the heart of this research
Una época tan violenta e históricamente cercana como la de la dictadura de La Junta Militar (11 de septiembre de 1973 / 1990), problematiza, entre otras, la autonomía del sistema simbólico de los textos literarios producidos dentro de ese contexto. A partir de lo anterior, nuestro estudio se interesa en la identificación de la memoria en el lenguaje poético desde la figuración de la violencia, principalmente aquel de seis poetas que abarca un periodo de cuarenta años (1950-1980). El interés del análisis versa sobre la capacidad del lenguaje poético para trascender la especificidad de un contexto tan importante y significativo, que sin embargo no es el único hito de violencia de Estado en la historia de Chile. La relación entre lenguaje poético y violencia se vuelve así central para la presente investigación.El estudio de textos de Nicanor Parra, Enrique Lihn y Jorge Teillier, como antecedentes poéticos mayores para la poesía de Gonzalo Millán, Tomás Harris y Rodrigo Lira, se presenta bajo una doble perspectiva : lingüística y socio-literaria. La primera parte del análisis implica un concepto de lenguaje poético acorde a la teoría del « sujeto en proceso » de Julia Kristeva. Esta perspectiva ambiciona verificar si las figuras de la violencia constituyen un discurso de memoria y de identidad en la poesía chilena. This is a story about the complex relationship between biomass and human beings, told through their shared becoming into plantations or locations of extractivisms in the tropical Andes. Barks, trunks, resins, flowers, fruits, seabird droppings, feathers, or mammalian meat and skins are some of the actors of this narrative. Submitted through greater or lesser violence, with axes, saws, or other technologies for extraction or domestication, medicines, textile fibers, food, gums, dyes, fertilizers, stimulants, as well as museum and decorative objects were obtained from these and other non-human actors. To do so, human beings had to deal with uncertainty in the form of climate changes, pests, fluctuating markets, among other difficulties. They also built relationships of subjugation towards each other, marked by the construction of otherness and dispossession, on different scales: local, national, regional, global. And there were those who questioned servile relationships and the destruction of nature, determined to transform them through policies. This chapter concentrates on the land use change processes in the four countries that occupy most of the tropical Andes: Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia (leaving aside the other tropical Andean territories of Chile, Argentina, and Venezuela).

By examining how contemporary Spanish and Chilean women writers represent dictatorial pasts and the experience of inner exile, this essay sheds light on the link between political and gendered violence underpinning the Franco dictatorship in Spain (1939-1975) and Pinochet dictatorship in Chile (1973-1989). Without collapsing difference, we address political systems and artistic movements within a wider cultural, political and historical framework. Through a close reading of El lector de Julio Verne by Spanish novelist Almudena Grandes and Óxido de Carmen by Chilean author Ana María del Río, we gain a platform to ask questions that move beyond a monocultural or national standpoint and to explore how authors have responded to similar struggles. A transatlantic comparative study of these texts not only helps us to understand how the regimes’ violence was shaped by related ideologies, but also how literature might intervene, expose and subvert such violence through the reconstruction of silenced memories of resistance.

Interpersonal violence results in 404,000 deaths annually and substantial health and economic costs. Although there is an element of genetic susceptibility, its use largely a social construct and thus inherently preventable. Interpersonal violence encompasses child maltreatment, peer violence, youth violence, physical, sexual, emotional, and economic intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and elder abuse. While these appear as a disparate set of acts of violence, they are actually very closely interrelated and perpetrators of one form are at greater risk of perpetrating others, and may also have been victims. This chapter uses an ecological approach to understanding common risk factors and underlying causes and reveals the importance of individual-level, interpersonal- or relationship-level, community-level, and societal factors. Evidence of the preventability of interpersonal violence is demonstrated in the United States, where the prevalence of all forms has declined since 1990. This has not been convincingly attributed to any one intervention, and further suggests that a complex and multilevel programme of interpersonal violence prevention is required, targeting risk factors, and encompassing effective health responses to support victims.

Abstract The link between domestic violence and child abuse is now well established in the literature (American Humane Association, 1994; Bowker, Arbitell, & McFerron, 1988; Edleson, 1999; Hart, 1992; Hotaling & Sugarman, 1986; Lyon, 1999; McKay, 1994; Mills, 1998a; O’Keefe, 1995; Stark & Flitcraft, 1988; Straus & Gelles, 1986; Straus, Gelles, & Steinmetz, 1980; Zorza, 1995). Despite the overlap of these two abuses, and the obvious practice implications posed when child protective services (CPS) workers detect domestic violence in a family with which they are working, little research has been done to explore the extent to which child protective agencies have integrated domestic violence into their actual assessment practices. Research generally focuses on efforts to train CPS workers to be sensitive to issues related to domestic violence (Aron & Olson, 1997a, 1997b; Fleck-Hender-son & Krug, 1997; Magen, Conroy, Hess, Panciera, & Simon, 1995; Mills, 1998a; Mills et al., 2000).

Each year an estimated one billion children (one out of two children worldwide) suffer some form of physical, sexual or psychological violence or neglect (Hillis, Mercy, Amobi, & Kress, 2016). Being a victim of violence in childhood has lifelong impacts on education, health, and well-being. Exposure to violence can lead to poor academic performance due to cognitive, emotional, and social problems (WHO, 2019). The right of the child to freedom from all forms of violence is affirmed by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, in its General Comment No. 13 (UNCRC, 2011). Moreover, the Sustainable Development Goals contain a clear call to eliminate violence against children, most explicitly in Target 16.2 (UN, 2015). Many efforts have been made globally to achieve these goals. Schools have been identified as one of the crucial contexts for conducting violence prevention efforts. They offer an important space where children, teachers and educators can learn and adopt pro-social behaviors that can contribute to preventing violence (WHO, et al., 2016). Teachers can play a key role, helping to build a “violence-free world” (UNESCO, WHO, UNICEF, End Violence Against Children, 2020), both by promoting positive relationships and by identifying signs of violence early. In fact, while international strategies provide a necessary framework for the promotion and protection of children's rights, it is the people who can make a difference in the prevention and detection of violence against children (Biffi, 2018). Based on these premises, the paper will focus on how teacher training can help prevent, report and address violence against children. Teachers are often not trained on this: some of them know the contents, but have doubts about how to deal with certain situations. Teachers should learn what to do with students who have gone through a traumatic experience because children choose someone who can see and recognize them (Miller, 1979, En. transl. 1995; Miller, 1980, En. transl. 1983). To be able to really recognize the child, a training course with teachers is necessary, to raise awareness and help them see the signals that children send (The Alliance for Child Protection in Humanitarian Action, End Violence Against Children, UNICEF, WHO, 2020). This paper, through literature and presentation of a training course with teachers in Italy, will offer a pedagogical reflection on teacher training in the prevention, reporting and addressing of violence against children, in order to start building a common shared strategy.
