Testo completoA permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) is a fundamental property of simple systems such as the electron, atoms/molecules or the neutron whose amplitude is expected to be non-zero within the Standard Model of particles physics (SM) but which has never been observed so far. This observable violating the CP symmetry offers the opportunity to link particle physics to the fundamental cosmological enigma of the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. Such an asymmetry requires new CP violation sources/mechanism beyond the SM, which can be best probed by EDM searches. The current EDM experiments sensitivity is order of magnitude above the weak SM sector predictions. Measuring a null EDM, after a 60 years quest, set the strongest upper limit on the CP violation in the strong SM sector and constrains the new physics models phase space. On the contrary, measuring a non-zero EDM in the coming years can be understood as a signal from physics beyond the SM evolving at a multi-TeV scale. In this haunting perspective, many new EDM projects raised in the last years and important efforts are pursued near the neutron in particular. This manuscript present the neutron EDM search near the most sensitive experiment running at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland

Testo completoThe neutrino mass generation mechanism, the nature of dark matter and the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe are three compelling questions that cannot be accounted for in the Standard Model of particle physics. In this thesis we focus on all these issues by providing a possible solution in terms of a minimal extension of the Standard Model, consisting in the addition of a set of sterile fermions to the field content of the theory. Sterile fermions are gauge singlet fields, that can interact via mixing with the active neutrinos. We focus on the Inverse Seesaw mechanism, which is characterised by a low (TeV or lower) new physics scale and that can be tested in current and future experimental facilities. We present the model building analysis that points towards the minimal realisations of the mechanism, and the phenomenological study in order to accommodate light neutrino masses and to impose all the relevant experimental constraints in the model, as well as the expected experimental signatures. We show the viability of the sterile neutrino hypothesis as dark matter component, together with the characteristic features of this scenario in the minimal Inverse Seesaw mechanism. The possibility of successfully accounting for the baryon asymmetry in a testable realisation of the leptogenesis mechanism is also addressed. On the other side it is important to look for manifestations of sterile fermions in laboratory experiments. We address this point by making predictions for the expected rates of rare lepton number violating decays of vector bosons, that can be mediated by sterile fermions, as well as by studying the impact of sterile fermions on global fit of electroweak precision data

Testo completoInformation security is deeply linked to data protection law, because an ineffective security implementation can lead to personal data breaches. The GDPR is based on a risk-based approach for the protection of the rights and freedoms of the data subjects, meaning that risk management is the mechanism for protecting fundamental rights. However, the state of the art of information security risk management and legal risk management are still immature. Unfortunately, the current state of the art does not assess the multi-dimensionality of data protection risks, and it has skipped the main purpose of a risk-based approach, measuring risk for taking informed decisions. The legal world shall understand that risk management does not work by default, and it often requires applied-scientific methods for assessing risks. This thesis proposes a mindset change with the aim of fixing data protection risk management, with a holistic data protection approach that merges operational, financial, and legal risks. The concept of a Personal Data Value at Risk is introduced as the outcome of several quantitative strategies based on risk modeling, jurimetrics, and data protection analytics. The ideas presented here shall also contribute to comply with upcoming risk-based regulations that rely on data protection, such as artificial intelligence. The risk transformation may appear difficult, but it is compulsory for the evolution of data protection

Testo completoGeneral Relativity (GR) and the standard model of particle physics provide a comprehensive description of the four interactions of nature. A quantum gravity theory is expected to merge these two pillars of modern physics. From unification theories, such a combination would lead to a breaking of fundamental symmetry appearing in both GR and the standard model of particle physics as the Lorentz symmetry. Lorentz symmetry violations in all fields of physics can be parametrized by an effective field theory framework called the standard-model extension (SME). Local Lorentz Invariance violations in the gravitational sector should impact the orbital motion of bodies inside the solar system, such as the Moon. Thus, the accurate lunar laser ranging (LLR) data can be analyzed in order to study precisely the lunar motion to look for irregularities. For this purpose, ELPN (Ephéméride Lunaire Parisienne Numérique), a new lunar ephemeris has been integrated in the SME framework. This new numerical solution of the lunar motion provides time series dated in temps dynamique barycentrique (TDB). Among that series, we mention the barycentric position and velocity of the Earth-Moon vector, the lunar libration angles, the time scale difference between the terrestrial time and TDB and partial derivatives integrated from variational equations. ELPN predictions have been used to analyzed LLR observations. In the GR framework, the residuals standard deviations has turned out to be the same order of magnitude compare to those of INPOP13b and DE430 ephemerides. In the framework of the minimal SME, LLR data analysis provided constraints on local Lorentz invariance violations. Spetial attention was paid to analyze uncertainties to provide the most realistic constraints. Therefore, in a first place, linear combinations of SME coefficients have been derived and fitted to LLR observations. In a second time, realistic uncertainties have been determined with a resampling method. LLR data analysis did not reveal local Lorentz invariance violations arising on the lunar orbit. Therefore, GR predictions are recovered with absolute precisions of the order of 10-9 to 10-12

Testo completoThe explosion of sequence number allows for phylogenomics, the study of species relationships based on large multi-gene alignments, to flourish. Without any doubt, phylogenomics is essentially an efficient way to eliminate the problems of single gene phylogenies due to stochastic errors, but numerous problems remain despite obvious progress realized in modeling evolutionary process. In this PhD-thesis, we are trying to characterize some consequences of a poor model fit and to study their impact on the accuracy of the phylogenetic inference. In contrast to heterotachy, the variation in the amino acid substitution process over time did not attract so far a lot of attention. We demonstrate that this heterogeneity is frequently observed within animals, but also that its existence can interfere with the quality of phylogenomic inference. In absence of an adequate model, the elimination of heterogeneous columns, which are poorly handled by the model, can eliminate an artefactual reconstruction. In a phylogenomic framework, the sequencing strategies often result in a situation where some genes are absent for some species. The issue about the impact of the quantity of empty cells was recently relaunched, but the majority of studies on missing data is performed on small datasets of simulated sequences. Therefore, we were interested on measuring the impact in the case of a large alignment of real data. With a reasonable amount of missing data, it seems that the accuracy of the inference is influenced rather by the choice of the model than the incompleteness of the alignment. For example, the addition of an incomplete sequence that breaks a long branch can at least partially re-establish an artefactual phylogeny. Because, model violations are always representing the major limitation of the accuracy of the phylogenetic inference, the improvement of species and gene sampling remains a useful alternative in the absence of an adequate model. Therefore, we developed a sequence-selection software, which allows the reproducible construction of datasets, based on the quantity of data, their evolutionary speed and their compositional bias. During this study, we did realize that the human expertise still furnishes an indispensable knowledge. The various analyses performed in the course of this PhD thesis agree on the primordial importance of the model of sequence evolution.
