Abstract (sommario):
Software development in recent decades has demonstrated a pace of change not seen since the Industrial Revolution. Software affects almost every aspect of human life in all parts of the world. From an intellectual property rights perspective, discourse and debate focus not only on how software should be protected, but also on a host of issues that reflect the many aspects that software plays in the digital distribution of creative content. A further issue concerning the concept of “computer program” is whether the images generated on screens as a result of the operation of a program (for example, in the case of video games) may or should be regarded as parts of a “computer program”. It is possible to find certain views according to which an affirmative answer should be given to this question, and such views have been accepted exceptionally even at the level of national legislation, but the dominant opinion, as well as the dominant position under national laws, is that the images generated by a computer program in the form of screen display go beyond the concept of computer programs proper. The concept of “computer program” under Article 4 of the WCT also does not extend to the images generated by computer programs on screens. Until recently, unauthorized copying of software required the physical exchange of floppy disks, CDs, or other hard media. But software piracy has become much easier with the spread of the Internet, becoming faster and cheaper. The Internet allows products to move from computer to computer without transactions on hard media and with little risk of detection. Some piracy schemes may even involve computers without the owner's knowledge. Piracy that once required understanding complex computer codes can now be done with the click of a mouse on peer-to-peer networks, through mail-order and auction sites, newsgroups, or even as simple email attachments. Strong action at the local, national and international levels is needed to counter these dangerous trends.

Abstract (sommario):
Designs are expressed in terms of structure, behavior, objects, modules, and functions which, once consolidated, become design blueprints. This paper describes a formal framework for expressing, analyzing, and comparing multiple views of designs. The analysis of multiple designs or views using different design notations is proposed as a strategy to enhance design quality by providing a systematic identification of design defects and discrepancies. Views are formalized, analyzed independently, and then compared to each other. The type of design discrepancies identified are omission of information, incompatible information, and inconsistencies between views.

Abstract (sommario):
Three studies were conducted which examined computer attitudes, and the effect of particular gender views on exploratory behavior. In the first study, preschool children were interviewed about their computer attitudes before and after an interactive storybook session. The results showed a high level of computer awareness, with boys holding more gender-stereotypical views, and experience did not seem to alter these beliefs. Those holding cross-gender beliefs about computers (mainly the girls) were more restrictive in their exploration of the software. In the other two studies, a questionnaire was used to assess computer attitudes among high school students. All held positive views with gender differences of degree but not kind. Few students held gender-stereotypical beliefs, although, there was a consensus that females were less proficient with computers. Unlike the preschoolers, the exploratory behavior of the older students was not related to attitudes. The results suggest that affirmative action programs are working within the high schools, but the provision of more female role models is considered to be important in helping to bridge the computer gender gap. Because gender attitudes about technology are formed early, these efforts need to include the very young.

Abstract (sommario):
Software maintenance programmers face the daunting task of understanding and modifying complex, unfamiliar programs that contain delocalized plans (conceptually related code that is not located contiguously in a program). Our research shows that programmers use an as-needed strategy when searching for the delocalized components which they need to understand. We have developed a maintenance tool, Whorf, that provides explicit support for visualizing and understanding delocalized plans using an as-needed strategy. Whorf supports this strategy through multiple, concurrent views of the software with instant, easy access to additional views. It supports the understanding of delocalized plans by providing hypertext links between views to highlight interactions between physically disparate components. A study comparing the usage of Whorf and paper documentation shows that the dynamic views and structure supported by Whorf provide information more quickly and easily than the static structure of paper documentation.

Abstract (sommario):
Current interest in improving the effectiveness and predictability of software development has led to a recent focus on software process modeling and improvement. Process-centered software development environments (PCSDEs), have been examined as a useful adjunct to software process modeling. A number of PCSDEs have been designed and built; an examination of the range of potential users of such environments reveals a wide range of needs with respect to information about an enacted software process and how this information is presented. This paper describes one aspect of a PCSDE supporting multiple simultaneous views: the design of a representation of enacted software processes which is suitable for the generation of multiple simultaneous views.

A software comprehension tool defines an abstract software model, views on this model, analyses creating the model, and a mapping between model and view. For creating new comprehension tools, we configure online analyses, models, views and their mappings instead of hand-coding them. In this paper, we introduce an architecture allowing such an online configuration and, as a proof of concept, a framework implementing this architecture. In several examples, we demonstrate the generality and flexibility of our approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Rule-based software development environments (RBDEs) model the software development process in terms of rules that encapsulate development activities, and assist in executing the process via forward and backward chaining over the rule base. We investigate the scaling up of RBDEs to support (1) multiple views of the rule base for multiple users and (2) evolution of the rule base over the lifetime of a project. Our approach is based on clarifying two distinct functions of rules and chaining: maintaining consistency and automation. By definition, consistency is mandatory whereas automation is not. Distinguishing the consistency and automation aspects of RBDE assistance mechanisms makes it possible to formalize the range of compatible views and the scope of mechanizable evolution steps. Throughout the paper, we use the MARVEL RBDE as an example application.

ABSTRACT DentaScan is a unique new computer software program which provides computed tomographic (CT) imaging of the mandible and maxilla in three planes of reference: axial, panoramic, and oblique sagittal (or cross-sectional). The clarity and identical scale between the various views permits uniformity of measurements and cross-referencing of anatomic structures through all three planes. Unlike previous imaging techniques, the oblique sagittal view permits the evaluation of distinct buccal and lingual cortical bone margins, as well as clear visualization of internal structures, such as the incisive and inferior alveolar canals.

Abstract (sommario):
✓ Data from single 10-minute magnetic resonance scans were used to create three-dimensional (3-D) views of the surfaces of the brain and skin of 12 patients. In each case, these views were used to make a preoperative assessment of the relationship of lesions to brain surface structures associated with movement, sensation, hearing, and speech. Interactive software was written so that the user could “slice” through the 3-D computer model and inspect cross-sectional images at any level. A surgery simulation program was written so that surgeons were able to “rehearse” craniotomies on 3-D computer models before performing the actual operations. In each case, the qualitative accuracy of the 3-D views was confirmed by intraoperative inspection of the brain surface and by intraoperative electrophysiological mapping, when available.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. Today, many medical procedures are based on image analysis with the aim of providing accurate diagnosis and optimal treatment. The goal of this report was to present clinical implications of computer-assisted geometric design of carotid aneurysms. Material and methods. In this study, the three-dimensional reconstruction was based on the approximation power of the parametric spline function, which achieves interpolation and surface fitting of the arterial information obtained by conventional angiography. Two views of conventional angiograms (anterioposterior and lateral views) were used with a personal computer and commercial software. Results. This method of three-dimensional generated images was applied in 45 cases of cerebral aneurysms in carotid bifurcation. 3D reconstructions were made in approximately 20 minutes. They contributed to assessing vascular structures, and it was possible to rotate the three-dimensional image in different angles. Conclusion. Three-dimensional reconstruction of cerebral vessels is very useful for discussing surgical strategies preoperatively. Furthermore, it could also be used in endovascular procedures. .

Abstract (sommario):
The paper proposes the method of working with the functionality of the computer programs AntConc, WordSmith, WordList, MonoConc Pro, CATMA, and KORP, which can be used to study the multilingual corpus texts on the topic of European Studies. Various debatable views of foreign scientists ‒ representatives of corpus linguistics ‒ regarding the content of the concept of the multilingual corpus have been considered. Besides, there has been formulated a working definition of the multilingual comparative corpus that belongs to the combined type of thematically oriented corpora of texts in different languages, grouped into sub-corpora, with their translation into other languages (or with the possibility to use computer programs to translate texts). The paper also defines the role of corpus linguistic statistics, which deals with the analyzed computer programs and allows to calculate the frequency of words or collocations use, construct diagrams of the frequency of word or collocation use in sub-corpora of texts, etc. Thus there has been made a preliminary conclusion that the computer toolkit of the corpus managers AntConc, WordSmith, WordList, MonoConc Pro, CATMA and KORP makes it possible to construct both individual Key Word in Context (KWIC) and concordance lists of search elements on the subject of European Studies; distinguish between the functionality of one or another contextual meaning of search units in their most probable left-handed and right-handed valency in different languages; see the results of statistical processing of the information from corpus tags; save and print the results; support different formats of text data (txt, doc, rtf, html, etc.).

Many studies have reported the utilization of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in teaching Software Engineering courses. However, these studies have different views of the effectiveness of PBL. This paper presents the design of an Advanced Software Engineering course for undergraduate Software Engineering students that uses PBL to teach them Agile software development methods- particularly Scrum. The course also aims to develop entrepreneurial skills needed for software engineering graduates to better prepare them for the software industry. The assessment process designed for this course is illustrated. The paper shows that Scrum practices correlate with the characteristics of the PBL approach, which has resulted in a successful experience of PBL as reported by students in an end of a semester survey.

Abstract (sommario):
Currently, systematic techniques for assessing macro mechanisms for transferring software engineering technologies are non-existent. This leads to inefficient allocation of research resources and increased risk to software technology intensive programs. Consequently, software technology transition today is an ill-defined and non-repeatable, inefficient process for bringing advanced software engineering technologies to market. This paper develops two dynamical models of a software technology transition from both macroscopic and microscopic views. The models are developed utilizing information theory, communication theory, chaos control theory, and learning curve principles. The combination of those scientifically sound mechanisms provides a basis for assessing, and/or prescribing a portfolio of technologies and the implementing macro infrastructure. This provides the theoretical framework for a practical method for a program manager to establish a high capacity transition channel, which accelerates technology maturation and insertion. Experiments based on very large number of data have been performed. Data samples assess the following technologies: software engineering, software technology transfer, Ada, Java, abstract data types, rate monotonic analysis, cost models, software standards, and software work breakdown structures.

Abstract (sommario):
Constant changes in a business context and software development make it important to understand how software quality assurance (SQA) should respond. Examining SQA from supplier and client perspectives, this study explores how different groups of SQA practitioners perceive future needs. A survey (n = 93) conducted in fall 2017 explored the views of SQA organizations on future trends. The results indicate that SQA organizations differ slightly in their attitudes to quality categories, as do different groups of SQA practitioners. It is argued that these differences should be taken into account when developing and implementing future SQA strategy. It is further argued that the found basic enables SQA management, evaluation of new practices, and allocation of resources to ensure that all quality categories remain balanced in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
For software with nontrivial size and complexity, it is not feasible to manually perform architecture reconstruction. Therefore it is essential for the software architecture miner who is mining architecture from the existing software to have a well-defined software architecture reconstruction process that helps incorporate as much tool use as possible at the appropriate steps of architecture reconstruction. There are some existing software architecture reconstruction frameworks but they do not provide guidelines on how to systematically utilize tools to produce architecture views for a reconstruction purpose. In this paper, we propose a framework for tool-based software architecture reconstruction. This framework consists of a generic process for software architecture reconstruction and the steps to derive from it a concrete tool-based process to be used for actual architecture reconstruction. The architecture miner can use this framework to analyze source code for modifying source code as well as to reconstruct software architecture from source code.

Abstract (sommario):
To support robust plan execution of autonomous robots in dynamic environments, autonomous robot software should include adaptive and reactive capabilities to cope with the dynamics and uncertainties of the evolving states of real-world environments. However, conventional software architectures such as sense-model-plan-act and behaviour-based paradigms are inadequate for meeting the requirements. A lack of sensing during acting in the sense-model-plan-act paradigm makes the software slow to react to run-time contingencies, whereas the behaviour-based architectures typically fall short in planning of long-range steps and making optimized plan adaptations. This article proposes a hybrid software architecture that maintains both adaptivity and reactivity of robot behaviours in dynamic environments. To implement this architecture, we further present the multi-agent development framework known as AutoRobot, which views the robot software as a multi-agent system in which diverse agent roles collaborate to achieve software functionalities. To demonstrate the applicability and validity of our concrete framework and software architecture, we conduct an experiment to implement a typical case, for example, a robot that autonomously picks up and drops off dishes for remote guests, which requires the robot to plan and navigate in a highly dynamic environment and can adapt its behaviours to unexpected situations.

Abstract (sommario):
The idea of a combined reference model- and view-based specification approach has been proposed recently in the software engineering community. In this paper we present a specification technique based on graph transformations which supports such a development approach. The use of graphs and graph transformations supports an intuitive understanding and an integration of static and dynamic aspects on a well-defined semantical base. On this background, formal notions of view and view relation are developed and the behaviour of views is described by a loose semantics. The integration of two views derived from a common reference model is done in two steps. First, dependencies between the views which are not given by the reference model are determined, and the reference model is extended appropriately. This is the task of a model manager. If the two views and the reference model are consistent, the actual view integration can be performed automatically. For the case of more than two views more general scenarios are developed and discussed. All concepts and results are illustrated at the well-known example of a banking system.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a model for expressing coordination in multiple view visualization systems. We present the model and describe a prototype implementation that illustrates the features of the model. Current visualization systems tend to have an informal and inconsistent approach to coordination. Our model takes a formal approach to describing widely used coordination concepts. The model is based on views sharing abstract objects such as the visualization parameters of the dataflow model. Additionaly, this paper describes how current coordinations in exploratory visualization work and how novel coordinations can be constructed using our model.
