Abstract (sommario):
Software development in recent decades has demonstrated a pace of change not seen since the Industrial Revolution. Software affects almost every aspect of human life in all parts of the world. From an intellectual property rights perspective, discourse and debate focus not only on how software should be protected, but also on a host of issues that reflect the many aspects that software plays in the digital distribution of creative content. A further issue concerning the concept of “computer program” is whether the images generated on screens as a result of the operation of a program (for example, in the case of video games) may or should be regarded as parts of a “computer program”. It is possible to find certain views according to which an affirmative answer should be given to this question, and such views have been accepted exceptionally even at the level of national legislation, but the dominant opinion, as well as the dominant position under national laws, is that the images generated by a computer program in the form of screen display go beyond the concept of computer programs proper. The concept of “computer program” under Article 4 of the WCT also does not extend to the images generated by computer programs on screens. Until recently, unauthorized copying of software required the physical exchange of floppy disks, CDs, or other hard media. But software piracy has become much easier with the spread of the Internet, becoming faster and cheaper. The Internet allows products to move from computer to computer without transactions on hard media and with little risk of detection. Some piracy schemes may even involve computers without the owner's knowledge. Piracy that once required understanding complex computer codes can now be done with the click of a mouse on peer-to-peer networks, through mail-order and auction sites, newsgroups, or even as simple email attachments. Strong action at the local, national and international levels is needed to counter these dangerous trends.

Abstract (sommario):
Designs are expressed in terms of structure, behavior, objects, modules, and functions which, once consolidated, become design blueprints. This paper describes a formal framework for expressing, analyzing, and comparing multiple views of designs. The analysis of multiple designs or views using different design notations is proposed as a strategy to enhance design quality by providing a systematic identification of design defects and discrepancies. Views are formalized, analyzed independently, and then compared to each other. The type of design discrepancies identified are omission of information, incompatible information, and inconsistencies between views.

Abstract (sommario):
Three studies were conducted which examined computer attitudes, and the effect of particular gender views on exploratory behavior. In the first study, preschool children were interviewed about their computer attitudes before and after an interactive storybook session. The results showed a high level of computer awareness, with boys holding more gender-stereotypical views, and experience did not seem to alter these beliefs. Those holding cross-gender beliefs about computers (mainly the girls) were more restrictive in their exploration of the software. In the other two studies, a questionnaire was used to assess computer attitudes among high school students. All held positive views with gender differences of degree but not kind. Few students held gender-stereotypical beliefs, although, there was a consensus that females were less proficient with computers. Unlike the preschoolers, the exploratory behavior of the older students was not related to attitudes. The results suggest that affirmative action programs are working within the high schools, but the provision of more female role models is considered to be important in helping to bridge the computer gender gap. Because gender attitudes about technology are formed early, these efforts need to include the very young.

Abstract (sommario):
Software maintenance programmers face the daunting task of understanding and modifying complex, unfamiliar programs that contain delocalized plans (conceptually related code that is not located contiguously in a program). Our research shows that programmers use an as-needed strategy when searching for the delocalized components which they need to understand. We have developed a maintenance tool, Whorf, that provides explicit support for visualizing and understanding delocalized plans using an as-needed strategy. Whorf supports this strategy through multiple, concurrent views of the software with instant, easy access to additional views. It supports the understanding of delocalized plans by providing hypertext links between views to highlight interactions between physically disparate components. A study comparing the usage of Whorf and paper documentation shows that the dynamic views and structure supported by Whorf provide information more quickly and easily than the static structure of paper documentation.

Abstract (sommario):
Current interest in improving the effectiveness and predictability of software development has led to a recent focus on software process modeling and improvement. Process-centered software development environments (PCSDEs), have been examined as a useful adjunct to software process modeling. A number of PCSDEs have been designed and built; an examination of the range of potential users of such environments reveals a wide range of needs with respect to information about an enacted software process and how this information is presented. This paper describes one aspect of a PCSDE supporting multiple simultaneous views: the design of a representation of enacted software processes which is suitable for the generation of multiple simultaneous views.

Abstract (sommario):
A software comprehension tool defines an abstract software model, views on this model, analyses creating the model, and a mapping between model and view. For creating new comprehension tools, we configure online analyses, models, views and their mappings instead of hand-coding them. In this paper, we introduce an architecture allowing such an online configuration and, as a proof of concept, a framework implementing this architecture. In several examples, we demonstrate the generality and flexibility of our approach.

Boiten, E. A. "Views of formal program development". Thesis, University of Kent, 1992. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/21069/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A formal specification describes a problem to be solved on a high level - ideally, it specifies what has to be done, but not how. Such descriptive specifications facilitate the derivation of any of the possible solutions, whereas operational specifications suggest only particular ones. Formal derivations in this framework consist of semantics preserving transformations, i.e. steps that proceed from solutions to the initial specification to other, more defined, more operational, or more efficient ones. Thus, the resulting programs are correct by construction with respect to their initial specifications. This thesis contains a number of case studies aiming at the exploration of new territories in the area of program specification and transformation. /pubs/1992/159/''Improving recursive functions by inverting the order of evaluation'' gives a comprehensive survey of one particular transformation strategy (a larger conceptual step in a transformational development that can be described at a more abstract level). This strategy for recursive functions entails the derivation of equivalent functions that use in their recursive evaluations the same arguments in an inverted order. This is an important optimization strategy, in particular for tree-like recursive functions, that are often defined in such a way that several function calls need to be evaluated more than once. By evaluating the function in an inverted order, such multiple evaluations are eliminated. /pubs/1990/165/ ''Factorization of the factorial'', illustrates a number of the transformations in chapter 2, and also demonstrates the state of the art in recursion simplification transformations. Directed by a small set of simple and well-known heuristics, a previously unknown algorithm for computing factorials is derived. Also, a similar development is shown leading to a corresponding program for a simple pipeline architecture. /pubs/1991/162/ ''A note on similarity of specifications and reusability of transformational developments'', written together with http://www.informatik.uni-ulm.de/pm/mitarbeiter/helmuth.html , explores the possibilities of reuse of transformational developments. Although it has often been claimed that this could be done fully mechanically, the experience with a number of derivations in this chapter indicates that this claim is somewhat preposterous. Only by describing the transformation steps in a very abstract way (using just natural language) and by considering very general specifications, can the developments be reused. The central concept is similarity, and several definitions of this informal notion are given, each leading to a particular kind of reuse of derivations. Variants of a derivation of linear search lead to several interesting search algorithms, culminating in derivations by reuse of two complicated string matching algorithms. /pubs/1991/161/ ''Intersections of sets and bags of extended substructures - a class of problems'', generalizes the specification of pattern matching. It describes a class of problems that can be viewed as a generalization of pattern matching problems. The essence of pattern matching is considered to be the intersection of a particular set with a bag (multiset) of extended substructures of a structured object. The set contains the patterns, the extended substructures are possible occurrences, extended with labels that mark their positions in the original object. This leads to the first ideas on an (interesting) theory on (extended) substructures. It is shown how the abstract description of this class of problems lends itself to calculation in a BMF style. Also, clearly exhibiting the basic structure of such problems facilitates connecting them with various solution strategies. /pubs/1991/156/ ''Solving a combinatorial problem by transformation of abstract data types'', gives an application of techniques from the area of formal program development in a different area, viz. combinatorics. By describing a given combinatorial problem in terms of abstract data types with equivalences, and transforming those data types, a reduction to a known problem is obtained. Abstract data types proved to be a more suitable specification mechanism in this case than context free grammars, since arbitrary equivalences could be introduced on the data types.

Abstract (sommario):
This master thesis is done in collaboration with Space and Virtuality studio of the Interactive Institute in Malmö. The project ActionBlocks, at the Space studio, relate to the requirements concerning hardware for ubiquitous computing. A system of intelligent building blocks is developed to be able to build functional HiFi prototypes fast. The building blocks are distributed in space and small, cheap web servers, called TINI, integrate the devices. ActionBlocks may be regarded as physical interfaces. The intention is that systems of different ActionBlocks (tag readers, digital cameras, loud-speakers, lamps, buttons etc.) may easily be constructed to support interaction with digital media in different projects. To be able to do this the ActionBlocks need to be assembled by a flexible architecture that can change when the needs alter. The goal with this thesis is to propose a concept for such an architecture. Except for the concept the thesis also contains an investigation of related architectures to explore what user aspect they have in the various projects and an implementation of a minor prototype to discover if the concept is valid in practice. ActionBlocks consist of an intelligent (digital) part and a physical part and it is possible to discern three different approaches towards the ActionBlocks. There are: · Physical - Action approach where the physical part and what happens in the real world is what matters. · Physical - Computational - Action approach where both parts are integrated on equal terms. · Computational approach where the intelligent part is most important and this view makes it possible for an ActionBlock to only contain an intelligent part. The approaches are entertained by three different user roles: the user, the interaction designer and the programmer. The user only interacts with the physical part of the ActionBlocks and is therefore only concerned about that part. He designs in use of ActionBlocks. The interaction designer assembles the ActionBlocks into a system. He configures the system and is concerned about the performance and the appearance of the ActionBlocks. Therefore he focuses on both the intelligent and the physical part. The interaction designer designs the interaction with the ActionBlocks. The programmer is the one that controls what can be done with an ActionBlock. He designs ActionBlocks. In development only the computational part is of interest because it is the only thing the programmer interacts with. The three ways to interact with ActionBlocks have an internal relationship. Development is needed to alter the possibilities to do configuration and use. The configuration forms a platform to use, because it provides new possibilities to customize it. This leads to a division into three aspects: Use, configuration and development. The partition makes it possible to focus on one aspect at a time. The three aspects have it counterparts in three different architectures: Pure Peer-to-Peer, Peer-to-Peer with distributed service and client-server architecture. The result is that the concept for an architecture for ActionBlocks is divided into three parts. One for each aspect. The concepts suggests that when the user interacts with the system the architecture is Peer-to-Peer and when the interaction designer interact with the system it is a Peer-to-Peer architecture with distributed service and when the programmer interacts with the system he can regard it as an client-server architecture. The concluding question is if there really is a reason to adapt the architecture to different aspects. My answer is that there is always an reason to adapt the technology to the human if it is possible.

Abstract (sommario):
Feature models are used for variability management in software product lines. Instead of developing a single feature model, merging small models can be an effective solution to obtain a unified view. Since each stakeholder views the product family from a different perspective, conflicts may occur during merging. In this research, merging of feature models arising from different viewpoints is considered. A normative procedure is proposed to merge feature models by applying local rules. This procedure can merge feature models with cross-tree relationships between sibling features. Application of the local rules is demonstrated with examples.

Sartipi, Kamran. "Software Architecture Recovery based on Pattern Matching". Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/1122.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Pattern matching approaches in reverse engineering aim to incorporate domain knowledge and system documentation in the software architecture extraction process, hence provide a user/tool collaborative environment for architectural design recovery. This thesis presents a model and an environment for recovering the high level design of legacy software systems based on user defined architectural patterns and graph matching techniques. In the proposed model, a high-level view of a software system in terms of the system components and their interactions is represented as a query, using a description language. A query is mapped onto a pattern-graph, where a module and its interactions with other modules are represented as a group of graph-nodes and a group of graph-edges, respectively. Interaction constraints can be modeled by the description language as a part of the query. Such a pattern-graph is applied against an entity-relation graph that represents the information extracted from the source code of the software system. An approximate graph matching process performs a series of graph edit operations (i. e. , node/edge insertion/deletion) on the pattern-graph and uses a ranking mechanism based on data mining association to obtain a sub-optimal solution. The obtained solution corresponds to an extracted architecture that complies with the given query. An interactive prototype toolkit implemented as part of this thesis provides an environment for architecture recovery in two levels. First the system is decomposed into a number of subsystems of files. Second each subsystem can be decomposed into a number of modules of functions, datatypes, and variables.

Abstract“A Passion for Software-Engineering.” This was the headline of a 2015 newspaper article about Ernst Denert. And they were absolutely right. Ernst Denert is really passionate about developing software with excellent quality in a predictable and systematic style. Furthermore, he is very much interested in encouraging young people to study computer science or at least to learn how programming and digitalization works, as well as computer science students to focus on software engineering principles and software development. This chapter is a personal view of Ernst Denert on the software engineering discipline.

Abstract (sommario):
Spatial visualization is the ability of an individual to imagine an object mentally and understand its spatial orientation. There have been multiple works proving that spatial visualization skills can be improved with an appropriate training. Such training warrant a critical place in the undergraduate engineering curricula in many engineering schools as spatial skills are considered vital for students’ success in the technical and design fields [1–4]. Enhanced spatial skills help not only professionals in the engineering field but also everyone in the 21st century environment. Drawing sectional views requires mental manipulation and visual thinking. To enhance students spatial reasoning, one of the authors of this study, conducted a class in spatial visualization. The course-learning goal aimed at improving first-year engineering students’ spatial reasoning through instruction on freehand drawings of sectional view. During the semester, two teaching assistants had to grade more than 500 assignments that consisted of sectional views of mechanical objects. This was a tedious and a time consuming task. Motivated by this experience, this paper proposes a software aiming at automating grading of students’ sectional view drawings. The proposed software will also give live feedback to students while they are working on the drawings. This interactive tool aims to 1) improve the learning experience of first year students, with limited CAD knowledge, and 2) introduce a pedagogical tool that can enhance spatial visualization training.

Abstract (sommario):
Many challenges of the contemporary world bring prospective teachers in a position to interrogate their own conceptions about the image that will educate the children. Teachers with experience of new generations of pupils speak with delight but also with fear. There are other children, should be treated otherwise? Their world is not the world we are trained to educate. Our study hypothesis is the fact that to begin a training program for future teachers should have a good knowledge of the general profile of the child today, in the context of a complex and dynamic social context. The study findings are built as prerequisites to substantiate initial training of teachers, who need to reflect deeply. They can respond to new categories on which training needs most times I reflected in philosophical manner. The content of teacher training should focus on the role of virtual environments to create situations of training, design and exploitation creative educational software, evaluation assisted digital educational management, investigation - internet communication on issues of education, psycho-pedagogical and career Computer-Assisted, etc .. Also, teacher training must take into account the experience gained through the implementation of the agreements between traditional education and practice or knowledge of the entire teaching obvious transformations that are generated by harnessing information and communication resources of computers. By integrating students will be trained in intelligence gathering activities on the Internet to solve problems, they will communicate and collaborate. Using a blog and not a simple web page, the teacher may receive comments and questions from his students and they can answer. This Communication aims to support students; information, useful contacts for further in-depth study can be posted on forums or on a learning platform specially created.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper the approaches to the intensification of the students’ brainwork by means of computer visualization of study material have been disclosed. In general, the content of students’ brainwork has been presented as a type of activity providing the cognitive process, mastering the techniques and ways of thinking, developing the capabilities and abilities of the individual, the product of which is a certain form of information, as a result of the brainwork the outlook of the subject of work is enriched. It is shown the visualization is the process of presenting data in the form of an image with the aim of maximum ease of understanding; the giving process of visual form to any mental object. In the paper the content, techniques, methods and software for creating visualization tools for study material has exposed. The essence and computer tools for creating such types of visualization of educational material like mind maps, supporting notes and infographics have been illustrated; they have been concretized from the point of view of application in the course of studying the mathematical sciences. It is proved the use of visualization tools for study materials helps to increase the intensity and effectiveness of students’ brainwork. Based on the results of an empirical study, it has been concluded the visualization of study materials contributes to the formation of students’ key intellectual competencies and forming their brainwork culture.
