Abstract (sommario):
Following the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, fearing the new communist leadership, an endless exodus of desperate individuals started: they were the Vietnamese “boat people”. Until 1996, when this massive displacement of millions of Vietnamese reached its conclusion, neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and later Hong Kong were to host the 3 waves of boat people that, at intervals, begun to reach their shores, becoming countries of first asylum. The UNHCR had a leading role in conducing resettlement procedures to third, western countries, for those who met the requirements for refugee status. At an international level, the problem was managed thanks to two important programs, the ODP and the CPA, issued following two famous conferences in 1979 and 1989, the latter finally leading the issue to its end.

Nguyen, Jason R. "Staging Vietnamese America| Music and the performance of Vietnamese American identities". Thesis, Indiana University, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1546986.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

This study examines how Vietnamese Americans perform identities that acknowledge their statuses as diasporic Vietnamese to construct and maintain specifically Vietnamese American communities. I argue that music, especially public forms of musical expression within mass media and locally staged cultural performances, is a crucial way for Vietnamese Americans across the diaspora to transmit markers of cultural knowledge and identity that give them information about themselves and the "imagined community" constructed through their linked discourses.

The argument is organized around two main ideas that focus on broad cultural patterns and locally situated expressions, respectively. First, music produced by the niche Vietnamese American media industry is distributed across the diaspora and models discourses of Vietnamese identity as different companies provide different visions of what it means to be Vietnamese and perform Vietnamese-ness on stage. I analyze the music variety shows by three different companies (Thuy Nga Productions, Asia Entertainment, and Van Son Productions) to argue that Vietnamese American popular media should not be seen as representing a single monolithic version of Vietnamese-ness; rather, each articulation of Vietnamese identity is slightly different and speaks to a different formulation of the Vietnamese public, producing a discursive field for diverse Vietnamese American identity politics.

Secondly, I show how identity is always performed in particular places, illustrating that Vietnamese Americans performing music in different places can have vastly different understandings of that music and its relationship to their identities. Using a Peircian semiotic framework, I articulate a theory of place-making in which places become vehicles for the clustering of signs and meaning as people experience and interpret those places and make meaning there. As people's experiences imbue places with meaning, people coming from similar cultural backgrounds may gain different attachments to those places and one another and thus different understandings of their identities as Vietnamese. I use two contrasting examples of Vietnamese American communities in Indianapolis and San Jose to show how people in each place construct entirely different discourses of identity surrounding musical performance based upon their positionality within the diaspora.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The present study is an attempt to give a description of how temporal and modal meanings are expressed in Vietnamese, and to relate the description to English by way of translation correspondence. The study is, therefore, a contrastive work on Time and Modality in Vietnamese and English. It is hoped that Vietnamese students might find in this work some kind of help that may facilitate their study of English grammar as regards time and mood. In chapter 1, the author presents a brief history of foreign language teaching in Vietnam, and the role of English as a foreign language in the country at present. He also discusses problems confronting Vietnamese teachers and students in teaching and learning English and states the aims of the study. Next, the structure of the Vietnamese verb-phrase is discussed, with a view to giving the reader some idea of how auxiliaries operate in Vietnamese. In chapter 2, a description of temporal expression in Vietnamese is presented, with emphasis on the uses of the so-called "time auxiliaries". Also, time adverbs, time clauses and questions with time in Vietnamese are discussed. Chapter 3 deals with modal expression in Vietnamese. In this chapter special attention is given to the uses of the modal auxiliaries. Attempts are then made to describe the so-called "attitudinal disjuncts" and conditional sentences in Vietnamese. In chapter 4, implications for teaching time and modality in English to Vietnamese students are given. The author suggests some teaching points, which, through the present contrastive work, are likely to be some of the most difficult areas for Vietnamese speakers and therefore should be given the most particular attention.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper reports on pilot work on the expression of Information Structure in Vietnamese and argues that Focus in Vietnamese is exclusively expressed prosodically: there are no specific focus markers, and the language uses phonology to express intonational emphasis in similar ways to languages like English or German. The exploratory data indicates that (i) focus is prosodically expressed while word order remains constant, (ii) listeners show good recoverability of the intended focus structure, and (iii) that there is a trading relationship between several phonetic parameters (duration, f0, amplitude) involved to signal prosodic (acoustic) emphasis.

Phan, Trang. "Syntax of Vietnamese aspect". Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4701/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this thesis is two-fold: to develop an articulated Vietnamese clause structure in two syntactic domains: VP-external and VP-internal in the spirit of generative grammar, and to see how this functional architecture is supported empirically from the perspective of second language acquisition. To address theoretical issues, on the one hand, it brings together interesting semantic and syntactic contrasts of aspectual morphemes in Vietnamese, i.e., the distributional and interpretative independence of Vietnamese tense and aspect as well as the way they interact with other syntactic phenomenon such as negation, quantification and definiteness. On the other hand, it reveals to what extent the mechanisms that Vietnamese recruits to encode aspect are different from those employed in Indo- European languages and other areally-related languages, especially including Chinese. Based on a detailed semantic-syntactic investigation of Vietnamese aspect, the thesis sets out the properties that need to be acquired by Chinese learners. It distinguishes between those properties which are acquirable without difficulties and those that are ‘problematic’ in order to verify the proposed Vietnamese functional clause. It also sets out to validate some recent hypotheses in the realm of second language acquisition. The thesis is organized as follows. Chapter 1 sets out the theoretical approach of the thesis. Chapter 2 systematically reviews a set of semantic and syntactic studies on aspect that are relevant to the discussion. Chapter 3 lays out previous research on Vietnamese tense and aspect as points of departure for my proposals. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to an analysis of how tense and aspect are realized in Vietnamese both pre- and post-verbally. Chapter 6 provides a brief comparison between Vietnamese and Chinese aspectual systems, focusing on the particular properties investigated in the following chapter. Chapter 7 presents a set of experiments examining Chinese learners’ acquisition of Vietnamese aspect-related constructions, these shed light on current generativist hypotheses about second language acquisition. Chapter 8 concludes the thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
A newly emerging, developing country has many high priority areas. Many of these high priority areas are related to the educational system. Education is viewed by many political leaders (and also by citizens rich and poor) as a 'Golden Key' which will unlock doors labelled with words such as 'Development', 'Progress', 'Success', and 'the English Language'. The English Language, a modern technical, trade and diplomatic language, is one of the avenues of communication which may enhance development within Vietnam. At the present moment, foreign language teaching and especially Teaching English as a Foreign Language and Teaching English for Special/Specific purposes, are given high priority ratings by those who plan the development stages for Vietnam. It is also recognized that EFL and ESP teaching can and should be improved. Australia is assisting this process of improvement by supporting an assistance programme. Twenty two teachers from tertiary language centres have been studying Teaching English as a Foreign Language at the Canberra College of Advanced Education. This writer is one of these students. One of the requirements for the Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language is an extended Field Study in a specific area. This writer selected 'Aural Comprehension'. In this Field Study, the writer has explored the past and present position of teaching ' Aural Comprehension' in Vietnam. The writer has identified several significant problem areas and has suggested alternative options which may improve the teaching and the learning in this area.

Huynh, Boi Tran. "Vietnamese Aesthetics From 1925 Onwards". University of Sydney. Sydney College of the Arts, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/633.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Twentieth century art in Viêt-Nam underwent immense changes due to the nations encounters with the West, through colonialism and two great wars. This thesis examines the significant impact of architecture, clothing painting and sculpture on the development of Vietnamese aesthetics. The very public nature of architecture and clothing will be used as a cultural backdrop for the changing aesthetic ideals in painting and sculpture. The thesis examines the aesthetic merits of Socialist Realism, introduced after reunification in 1975, in particular, its relationship to the art of the Republic of Viet- Nam (South Viêt-Nam) from 1954 to 1975. Vietnamese post-war art historians have consistently omitted the significant cultural developments of this period in their writings. A study of this distinctive era will clarify aesthetic changes in the last decades of the twentieth century. After a long period of isolation and ideological constraint, remarkable cultural changes occurred when Viêt-Nam re-established contact with the outside world. This thesis will present the subsequent changes in aesthetics, as an attempt to balance tradition and modernity, within the context of market reforms and the internationalisation of Vietnamese art. These events had a significant impact on the contemporary art market in Viêt-Nam. Through the changes that art history has noted, this thesis argues that the interactions with outsiders were either an impetus or a pressure for changes in Viet-Nams drive for modernity.

Luong, To Lan. "Vietnamese university students' academic motivation". Thesis, Griffith University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/384275.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Since 2005, a comprehensive reform agenda has been implemented in Vietnam aimed at improving the quality of higher education and of university graduates. While there has been a rapid expansion in participation in higher education, there are strong concerns regarding the preparedness of students and their overall employability. Strategies have been identified to address these concerns; however, the issue of student motivation has not been considered. This study, guided by self-determination theory, addressed this gap by exploring Vietnamese university students’ motivation including both motivation for daily study and, more broadly, motivation to pursue university education. Guided by self-determination theory, a macrotheory of motivation, and conducted at a high-ranking, multidisciplinary university in Hanoi, this study employed a convergent parallel mixed methods research design. A total of 678 first-year students were surveyed. The survey instrument, based on the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) (Vallerand et al., 1992, 1993), collected data to (a) assess both quantity and quality of students’ ongoing motivation, (b) examine the effects of demographic characteristics on students’ ongoing motivation, and (c) test the psychometric properties of the AMS in the current sample. Additionally, 14 students from Years 2 to 4 participated in 1:1 interviews focusing on their motivation around undertaking university education, degree choice, and ongoing motivation for study. The results of descriptive analysis of 648 surveys revealed that Vietnamese students in this study had relatively low levels of self-determination in their daily study. These students exhibited higher levels of extrinsic motivation than intrinsic motivation, and were most highly motivated to study for reasons relating to future employment, although many demonstrated levels of amotivation. A confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to assess the appropriateness of the AMS in assessing Vietnamese students’ motivation. The results revealed that the 7-factor AMS with 23 items out of the original 28 items fitted the data well. The revised AMS exhibited satisfactory levels of reliability and validity. The results of the MANOVA to investigate the effects of demographic characteristics on students’ ongoing motivation showed a complex combination to family (including educational background and financial capacity) as well as those related to the individual (including gender and major). A thematic analysis of the interviews was used to investigate the relationship between students’ ongoing motivation and their original motivation for pursuing university education. This analysis supported results from previous studies and of the MANOVA. The students who were interviewed attended university for both economic and non-economic reasons. These students chose degree programs based on their own interests, family opinions, and social trends. The initial motivation for these students to attend university transformed into academic goals and influenced students’ motivation to a large extent. Many students reported a change in motivation between Year 1 and Year 2, and the first-year experience had an important role in understanding this change. This study will make a significant contribution to theory as well as practice. The AMS has never been tested in Vietnam, and the reliability of its application in a collectivist culture is a substantial contribution to our understanding of self-determination theory. In practice, the findings of this thesis will enable administrators and educators to design appropriate measures to enhance students’ motivation and will contribute to the quality of the higher education experience. Given the context in which higher education in Vietnam exists, revealing the complex connections between the collectivist culture and individual motivation has potential to guide the reform agenda and, ultimately, contribute to student learning.

Soldavini, Irene. "Identity in Vietnamese diasporic cinema". Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 2010. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28926/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
French and American cinema has portrayed Viet Nam and the Vietnamese in narratives which, broadly-speaking, are reflective of French and American ideologies. The Vietnamese, in these productions, have generally been presented as the object, and not as the subject. However, since the 1980s, an interesting and significant cinematic counter-narrative to the Western idea of Viet Nam has been constructed. This is because the Vietnamese diaspora in France and in the United States has started making films about its own experiences of French colonial rule, the Vietnamese-American conflict, the Vietnamese Communist regime, exilic journeys, contemporary Viet Nam, and the generational conflicts among the Vietnamese diaspora. The identities of the diasporic Vietnamese- particularly the younger generations- have, inevitably, been strongly shaped by these themes, but, at the same time, are also clearly influenced by the culture and values of the new country. The thesis demonstrates how diasporic Vietnamese film makers construct narratives which clearly express hybridized identity: their output presents both aspects of a traditional Western discourse and, significantly, elements not seen in American and French productions.

Marci, Sara Enrica Alberta <1988&gt. "Land grabbing: the Vietnamese case". Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/6631.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My thesis deals with matters related to the Land grabbing and goes into the Vietnamese specific case. During the global food crisis of 2007 2008, land, which was considered not interesting to anyone, started attracting investments by resource poor but cash rich countries. It turned out in large scale acquisitions or rent of lands in order to achieve food security. It affected the right to food, the right to self-determination, exploitation of natural resources and local communities. After that, the Vietnam case scenario will be analyze. Vietnam is one of the mayor players in farmland acquisitions of the South East Asia and it is likely to become more prominent in the future. My work is divided into two parts. Firstly, the phenomenon of the land grabbing will be explained deeply. An overview of the scale of international investment in land specifying actors and type of land, will be given. Motivations which push drivers to invest in land will be analyzed. Usually the reasons for the public sector is to achieve food security while for the private sector is to ensure the productivity of biofuel, food and to gain finance advantages. Also there are ecological matters such as the protection of natural resources, water, forestry and so on. Furthermore, impacts on the economic sector, gender and environment and limits of large scale investments will be explored. Secondly, the thesis will go into the Vietnamese case. This special case will be underline, in fact Vietnam invests in the neighboring countries but at the same time endure investments by other countries. The reasons of such investments depends on the driver: it can be private or public. Usually the public driver wants to achieve food security while the private driver wants to rich economic profit not respecting regulations, as in the case of the privately owned Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) and state-owned Vietnamese Rubber Group (VRG) which both acquired more than 200,000 hectares of land through a series of illegal deals with the Lao and Cambodian governments. Controversial issues about Vietnam will be showed: for the Economist Vietnam would failed if it maintained a small scale production, however for FAO Vietnam should promote alternative ways of small scale “smart agriculture”. In conclusion, it will become evident as the land grabbing phenomenon seems destined to expand in the long term. It will be highlighted how all the investments should be controlled not to allow to economic interests to destroy our only world and step on human rights. In fact, land grab can maximize opportunities with appropriate regulations to mitigate the negative impacts on the populations and on the land. I will base my research on different sources such as The Economist, the Diplomat and BBC which give general information about land grabbing, they represent just the peak of the iceberg. This information will be examine in depth using Land Matrix Database, FAO, GRAIN and Global Witness reports to estimate the actual state of land grabbing.

Abstract (sommario):

This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate whether culturally competent resources, such as Vietnamese-speaking healthcare providers, one-on-one public health nurse (PHN) education session(s), and free healthcare services would affect the results of the following questions: (a) Will the 114 study subjects achieve HbAIC reduction at 6-month and 12-month periods? (b) Is there a correlation between HbA1C reduction and the number of the provider visits? and (c) Is there a significant HbA1C reduction for the one-on-one PHN education participants compared to the non-participants? The result findings were analyzed using the Chi-Square tests and the two-sample t-tests. On average, the 114 subjects achieved HbA1C reductions of0.57% and 0.63% at 6-month and 12-month periods, respectively. However, there was no direct correlation between the HbA1C reductions and the frequency of provider visits. Furthermore, the PHN education session(s) did not significantly affect the rate of HbA1C reduction for the attendees. In conclusion, future studies on culturally competent interventions should be studied in the Vietnamese patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes the system of focus-sensitive particles and, to a lesser extent, clefts in Vietnamese. EVEN/ALSO/ONLY foci are discussed across syntactic categories, and Vietnamese is found to organize its system of focus-sensitive particles along three dimensions of classification: (i) EVEN vs. ALSO vs. ONLY; (ii) particles c-commanding foci vs. particles c-commanding backgrounds; (iii) adverbial focus-sensitive particles vs. particles c-commanding argument foci only. Towards the end of the paper, free-choice constructions and additional sentence-final particles conveying ONLY and ALSO semantics are briefly discussed. The peculiar Vietnamese system reflects core properties of the analogous empirical domain in Chinese, a known source of borrowings into Vietnamese over the millennia.

Abstract (sommario):
Philosophy
Ph.D.
In this study I present a new understanding of Vietnamese existentialism during the period 1954-1975, the period between the Geneva Accords and the fall of Saigon in 1975. The prevailing view within Vietnam sees Vietnamese existentialism during this period as a morally bankrupt philosophy that is a mere imitation of European versions of existentialism. I argue to the contrary that while Vietnamese existential philosophy and European existentialism share some themes, Vietnamese existentialism during this period is rooted in the particularities of Vietnamese traditional culture and social structures and in the lived experience of Vietnamese people over Vietnam's 1000-year history of occupation and oppression by foreign forces. I also argue that Vietnamese existentialism is a profoundly moral philosophy, committed to justice in the social and political spheres. Heavily influenced by Vietnamese Buddhism, Vietnamese existential philosophy, I argue, places emphasis on the concept of a non-substantial, relational, and social self and a harmonious and constitutive relation between the self and other. The Vietnamese philosophers argue that oppressions of the mind must be liberated and that social structures that result in violence must be changed. Consistent with these ends Vietnamese existentialism proposes a multi-perspective ontology, a dialectical view of human thought, and a method of meditation that releases the mind to be able to understand both the nature of reality as it is and the means to live a moral, politically engaged life. This study incorporates Vietnamese existential philosophy from 1954-1975 into the flow of the Vietnamese philosophical tradition while also acknowledging its relevance to contemporary Vietnam. In particular, this interpretation of Vietnamese existentialism helps us to understand the philosophical basis of movements in Vietnam to bring about social revolution, to destroy forms of social violence, to reduce poverty, and to foster equality, freedom, and democracy for every member of society. By offering a comparison between Vietnamese existential thinkers and Western existentialists, the study bridges Vietnamese and the western traditions while respecting their diversity. In these ways I hope to show that Vietnamese existentialism makes an original contribution to philosophical thought and must be placed on the map of world philosophies.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores Vietnam’s trade policymaking to generate insights into the factors driving the country’s process of trade liberalization since the 1980s. Vietnam provides an important case for the study of the politics of trade policy, as its rapid transformation from isolation to active trade player has been one of the most dramatic of any country. As a developing country, such trade agreements require costly and highly politically sensitive policy reforms. Moreover, as a country with a one-party socialist political system, its capacity to engage with the capitalist global and regional trade regimes is less than for many of its peers. This situation raises questions about how and why Vietnam has so rapidly adopted a strategy of aggressive trade liberalization through bilateral, regional and global trade agreements? Previous scholarly research on Vietnam’s trade policy reforms tends to emphasize economic rationales, such as expanding exports and/or attracting inward foreign investment. While these factors are certainly pertinent, they ignore a wider range of transformations within Vietnam that have reconfigured how it engages with the global economy. This study goes beyond economic factors to explore how changes in the actors, interests, ideas, and institutions of Vietnam’s trade policymaking have led to its distinctive type of trade reforms. Using case study and interview methods, the thesis examines Vietnam’s domestic trade reforms and participation in key international trade agreements. The study argues that the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the state took the lead role to advocate for international trade agreements. Underlying these reforms were transformation within the CPV and state, through which a new diplomatic and economic reform mindset and arose over groups opposing trade policy on the ground of potential economic and political risks. Such transformations were facilitated through more pluralistic and inclusive processes within the CPV, and the relations between the party-state and interest groups, contributing to enabling the country’s transformation into an active trade policy player.

Nguyen, Luan T. "Vietnamese energy sector: Challenges and opportunities". Thesis, Griffith University, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/420549.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The energy sector plays a vital role in helping developing countries to escape poverty, improve living standards, and narrow the economic gap with developed countries. However, in the developing world, the energy industry faces more challenges that prevent these countries from entirely using energy for economic development. This thesis examines the most vital issues related to the energy sector, including energy inefficiency, energy poverty, and the challenges and opportunities to develop renewable energy. The thesis examines data and context in Vietnam, one of the most resilient developing countries, but the findings could be related to most developing countries. This thesis is structured in the form of four empirical studies. The first study evaluates the impacts on energy inefficiency in the industrial energy sector under three broad aspects, which are (a) government involvement, (b) managerial behaviour, and (c) technology adoption. The study employs the Shephard energy distance function with firm-level panel data of eight major industries to suggest that energy is inefficiently used in all industries. Besides, it found that shared ownership between public and private sectors outperforms state ownership or sole private tenure in energy efficiency. Furthermore, larger firms, import activities, and investment to expand the production line negatively influence energy efficiency. Finally, policy implications are discussed with some highlights towards reducing state intervention in business ownership and energy market regulation. The second study proposes a new energy poverty measure by suggesting an extension for the Exact Affine Stone Index demand system (Lewbel and Pendakur, 2009) to include implied disutility of energy use.1 The disutility occurs from overconsuming dirty fuels or sacrificing other household demands to make clean energy more affordable. These considerations produce a more precise energy-poor indicator for household energy mix consisting of solid biomass and modern fuels. Applying the proposed method, this study found that energy poverty is possible even at income levels that are not financially poor. In addition, higher income levels may not motivate households to substitute traditional energy with cleaner resources entirely. Instead, these households still use solid biomass as a traditional habit and because of its abundance. However, consuming carbon-intensive energy sources does not necessarily mean energy poor. Finally, policy implications recommend that energy policies consider broader subjects rather than focusing solely on financially poor families. In addition, well-off families should be made aware of the health risk of using dirty energy and encouraged to pursue sustainable energy-consuming habits. The third and fourth studies found that solar energy has excellent opportunities to enable Vietnam to move to renewable energy and meet emission reduction targets, but also has challenges that must be addressed. The third study applies survival analyses with the household panel data and discovered that feed-in tariff policy dramatically boosted solar adoption. However, higher power tariffs, which are in regulated price schemes, discouraged solar energy adoption. In addition, the fourth study revealed that rooftop solar energy had a short-term rebound effect. In the long-term, the rebound effects decrease, but households tend to abandon the solar system because households were not instructed to install solar storage to store the outputs and were less attracted by the feed-in tariff to sell solar to the grid. These results signify that solar energy development could be motivated by supportive policies. However, to ensure the desired achievement, policies should be directed to more encouraging feed-in tariff structures and to removing the regulated and subsidised price scheme. Overall, this thesis contributes to the literature by identifying the challenges and opportunities faced by Vietnam and potentially other developing countries. The thesis contributes to policy implications by quantifying the impact factors, suggesting plausible solutions for policymakers to alleviate the obstacles and leverage the chances. Furthermore, this thesis makes significant contributions to the methodological literature. The second study proposed a new method to measure energy poverty. All other studies employ the most recent methods or novel approaches, such as the long-term dynamics of the solar rebound effect.

Abstract (sommario):
Vietnamese Americans are the children of refugees. While some are middle-class and upwardly mobile, many are not. As an ethnic group, Vietnamese Americans are often grouped, by the mainstream and academics, with other high status and high achieving Asian Americans. In this study, I look at middle-class and upwardly mobile Vietnamese American students and alumni and their voluntary association with a vast network of ethnic organizations. I ask the question, how do these Vietnamese Americans respond to their racialization when their local ethnic resources are not consistent with their racial status? In my analysis, I draw on concepts from literature on segmented assimilation, minority cultures of mobility, and ethnic boundary work. Additionally, I frame my analysis in terms ethnic capital formation, social capital, and cultural frames. I found that Vietnamese Americans collectively responded to racialization via the organization and its programming. Additionally, they constructed and promoted a “cultural frame of indebtedness” to rationalize the discrepancy between their success and the marginalization of their co-ethnics.

Abstract (sommario):
Children benefit in many ways from play. Play provides children with an excellent way to express their feelings and conceptions of the world in which they live. Play also provides a forum in which researchers can capture, understand and interpret children's voices and views. Like many countries around the world, Vietnam is currently reforming their early childhood education curriculum to provide a play-based, child centred and outcomes focused approach to early childhood education. In order to capture children's interest and promote child initiated and directed learning, educators and policy makers need to consider how children interpret their personal play lives. This study presents data from children's programs in nine kindergartens and cultural programs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Children's drawings and stories were collected to document young children's conceptions of play in Vietnam at the turn of the millennium. Through these 353 drawings and stories, key themes in the children's play lives were identified. The purpose of this study is to examine children's views about play. What do they like to play? How do they define play? How are young Vietnam's children's conceptions of their play influenced by cultural attitudes and expectations? In addition, the study proposes some new play-based, child centred and outcomes focused approaches to curriculum development for Vietnamese early childhood programs.

Stocks, Allison Patricia. "Diversification and depletion in Vietnamese seahorse fisheries". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/56251.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The development of effective evidence-based management is limited by a lack of long-term records for many vulnerable marine species that are caught in small-scale fisheries. To address this data gap, I studied a small-scale fishery in southern Vietnam with a focus on seahorses (Hippocampus spp.), globally traded, cryptic fishes that are notably vulnerable to overexploitation. Using a combination of fisher interviews and catch landings surveys, I documented five fishing gears that regularly caught seahorses intentionally and/or incidentally: otter trawls, beam trawls, pair trawls, crab nets, and compressor diving. About 20% of fishers I studied specifically targeted seahorses and made the majority of their income from selling these fish; a novel finding. The seahorse catch consisted of three species – Hippocampus spinosissimus, H. kuda and H. trimaculatus – with catch composition varying by gear and fishing ground. Bottom trawl boats and compressor divers that targeted seahorses caught them at mean rates of 23 and 32 seahorses per day respectively, while those that caught seahorses incidentally caught 1 and 3 per day respectively. The total catch from the island from these two fishing methods was approximately 162,000–234,000 seahorses per year. This catch is up to four times higher than in other studied regions of Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia. Fishers reported that seahorse catch rates had decreased by 86-95% from 2004 to 2014. Meanwhile, the landed value of seahorses had increased by 534% during the same time period, encouraging fishers to continue capturing and selling seahorses. These signs point toward a high-pressure fishery that is likely unsustainable. Fisheries management efforts in the area should be strengthened by enforcing marine protected areas and improving fishers’ compliance to regulation. My findings emphasize the transitions that can occur in a high-pressure small-scale fishery and highlight the need for effective management to ensure sustainable seahorse populations.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Vietnamese soy sauce has been made for centuries using traditional methods, in villages in Northern Vietnam. This sauce differs from other Asian products not only in its raw materials but also in its flavour characteristics. Presently small scale Vietnamese soy sauce is produced mostly with a standardised inoculum of Aspergillus oryzae under natural conditions. This usually gives rise to a product of variable and inconsistent quality. The aim of this study was to standardise the fermentation condition for the production of Vietnamese soy sauce, so as to obtain a product of more consistently good quality. Aspergillus flavus var columnaris was used as the inoculum. The inoculum was prepared by growing the organism on sticky rice at 20 and 37 degrees centigrade under aerobic conditions. At 20C, a high protease activity was recorded in the inoculum while at 37C, a high amylase activity was observed. The two different inocula prepared at 20C and 37C were then used in the preparation of soy sauce in the normal manner. The inocula were mixed with cooked roasted soy beans and salt water, left to age for 1 month at 30C, followed by ageing at 20C for 2 months. The products obtained were subjected to sensory evaluation and analysed for glucose, fructose, amino acids, nitrogen, ethanol and NaCI. Both inocula produced products of acceptable quality. The inoculum produced at 20C had a higher sensory evaluation score. It also contained a higher level of protein (14.5% compared to 11%), and a higher sensory evaluation score (6.9 compared to 3.2) when compared to a commercial Vietnamese sauce, Hanoi soy sauce. This valuable information will now enable small scale producers to produce this product throughout the year by controlling the temperature, and not be limited to the summer season, as has been the case with the traditional method of production.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent years have witnessed many developments in the use of the communicative approach in language teaching. This approach aims at developing students' ability to communicate with native speakers of the target language. To achieve this ability, students are required to have not only linguistic competence but also communicative competence. That is why the students need not only the linguistic knowledge but also the background knowledge of the culture in which the language is spoken. Language is a part of culture. Cultural differences always cause problems for speakers of different cultures while communicating. Therefore, the " learning of a second culture is often a part of the learning of a second language " (Brown, 1980: 242 ) . Background Studies, including culture, used to be neglected or taught improperly in the curriculum of the Hanoi Foreign Languages College. In consequence, Vietnamese E.F.L students at the College have a poor background knowledge of the English speaking countries and their people's patterned ways of life. This causes difficulties for them when communicating with native speakers of English, even when they are studying at the College where culture-based textbooks and materials are commonly used. Therefore, Background Studies, including culture, must be seen as a separate and indispensable component of the curriculum of the College which aims at providing the students with the background knowledge of English speaking countries and with an awareness of their people's ways of life, their customs and habits and so on. Various techniques for the teaching of this subject are examined.

Abstract (sommario):
This study is mainly concerned with the common errors Vietnamese adult students make in learning English as a second/foreign language. Using the tools of contrastive analysis and error analysis, the researcher decribes and examines certain areas of similarity and difference between English and Vietnamese on some grammatical aspects, and then analyses the errors made by the Vietnamese students in two different learning contexts and at different levels of proficiency. This studies consists of six chapters : Chapter 1 introduces the position of English in Vietnam at present, raises the problems encountered in the teaching and learning of English in Vietnam, and states why this study is necessary. Chapter 2 is the summary of the main theories of second language acquisition and some of the principal studies of Vietnamese grammar. Chapter 3 discusses the techniques of contrastive analysis and error analysis, which provide bases for the comparative study in Chapter 4 and the error analysis in Chapter 5. In Chapter 4, a contrastive study is undertaken of eleven aspects of English and Vietnamese grammar, which serves as the basis for the discussion in Chapter 5. Chapter 5 presents an analysis of the common errors Vietnamese students make in two different learning contexts in Vietnam and in Australia. It also discusses the various strategies the students use in order to achieve language proficiency. Finally, some conclusions concerning the attitude towards, and the treatment of, errors are mentioned in Chapter 6. It also provides suggestions for further study in the subject area.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines Vietnamese Australians' attitudes towards sexist language. One can not separate language from the cultural and social issues as they are intertwined with one another. The shaping of an individual's behaviours, attitudes, life values, his/her application of language largely depends on the social environment where s/he has grown up. In Vietnamese society, Confucianism has played a part in shaping many individuals' thinking. Although in the present time it is not as popular as many years ago, it still exists in a number of families, it can be seen through the way they behave, what they believe. There are many research studies on the sexist language in English whereas it is rare to find a research study dealing with sexist language in Vietnamese. This thesis deals with the Vietnamese migrants' attitudes and perception of sexist language. It investigates the nature and characteristics of sexist language in Vietnamese and makes some comparison with that in English. Special attention is given to the socio-cultural context in which sexist language was derived and used. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used.

Vietnamese labors in Taiwan have increased every year. They are the important supplementary labor force to Taiwan, and make a significant contribution to the economic growth both to Taiwan and Vietnam. However, none or little is known about the labor brokers in both countries between their operation and law compliance. The purpose of this study is thus to analyze the gap and make recommendation to narrow the gap. The present study interviewed 7 subjects (legal and illegal Vietnamese labors in Taiwan, brokers/consultants in Taiwan and Vietnam, Taiwanese employers and an NGO social worker) and found out that a so-called “co moi-broker” emerged in Vietnam recently. The co moi-broker could be an individual or a team, who are stationed at the countryside or farmer village by the headquarters company of laborer agency as head hunters. Their commission is paid by the potential labors through the agency. Vietnamese agencies have to pay all the fees of expense and cost to Taiwanese agencies. The sum of fees usually go beyond the maximum amount which stipulated by the Vietnamese government. Almost every agency cooks the book to collect the fees from the job hunters without giving a receipt. What more they ask the job hunters pay back the loan with interest by the installment to confuse them how much money they owe. On the other hand, Taiwanese agencies monthly collect the service fee according to the stipulation of regulation but are seldom to provide services or assistance to foreign labors in-need. It’s the obligation for them to protect and assist the foreigner labor but they often fail to do that. Some Taiwanese agencies intentionally ignore situations such as illegal prolong working hours, works unlisted in the working contracts, unsafe working environment, abuse or harsh treatment at work, but focus on maintaining good business relationships with employers and demanding workers to cope with the difficult working conditions. Further, economy depression in Taiwan makes foreign labors difficult to earn the wage they were promised when they signed their working contracts. Many Vietnamese labors were forced to run away to seek a job with more freedom and better wage. Two recommendations were made to improve the situation. For Vietnam government, they should highly supervise and sanction those agencies who deliberately fail to compile with regulations. For Taiwanese government, they should loosen the restrictions and take more flexible policy to allow labors to transfer their jobs once the illegal working conditions happen or the employers suffer from downwards business. Keywords : Vietnamese labors in Taiwan, labor brokers, co moi-brokers, brokerage fees
