Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The present study concerns the digital documentation of the city wall of Verona. The "Verona Città Murata" project began in 2015 thanks to the research agreement between the Municipality of Verona (UNESCO office) and the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia. The project stems from the request to develop tools to document the site's conservation to initiate timely restoration, management, and maintenance studies. Measures for protecting, conserving, and enhancing a comprehensive and impressive cultural and natural heritage, such as the Magistral Walls and the Veronese Park, are complex and multifaceted. The multi-disciplinary aspect and the use of flexible tools to manage the information and analyses obtained during the study phase are fundamental. The research aims to optimize the fortified system's acquisition process by validating integrated survey methods and assessing point cloud data's potential, limitations, and planimetric and elevation accuracy (TLS, MLS, UAVs). On the one hand, the research products are aimed to structure a methodology of valuable representation for the documentation and diagnostic and conservative analysis of the artifact; on the other hand, they will become a helpful tool for the narrative description of Verona's fortifications to disseminate and valorize the fabric of military technology.

Abstract (sommario):
In response to the global challenges brought on by climate change, cities around the world are adapting, innovating through nature-based strategies for sustainable development. Climate adaptation requires new interdisciplinary approaches in which different disciplines as well as research and practice proactively co-create and collaborate on adaptation to reduce the ongoing effects of anthropogenic climate change. Although awareness on climate adaptation is on the rise, new approaches for urban development are still in development. Moreover, existing approaches mainly focus on local-scale levels or lack a crossover with urban and landscape planning. The present contribution offers an example of an integrated approach bridging urban climatology, landscape planning, and governance to assess and develop climate adaptation solutions linking city and district levels. The city of Verona was taken as a case study to test this approach and its implications for the development of a green and blue infrastructure with a climate-responsive master plan for the district of Verona South. Through critical reflection on the application of the approach to the case study, we aimed to identify its potentials and barriers. Based on this reflection, we provide herein recommendations on how climate modelling can be integrated into planning, as well as on how urban planners and urban climatologists can support each other in making credible and salient climate adaptation solutions.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose City image has been defined as the sum of beliefs, ideas and impressions people hold regarding a city. While abundant literature has explored city image from tourists’ perspectives, few studies have explored residents’ perceptions, and even fewer have compared city image as perceived by tourists and residents. In addition, very few studies have compared tourists’ and residents’ perceptions of city image in small- to medium-sized destinations. Considering these research gaps, the purpose of this paper is to address city image in a medium-sized destination, Verona, in northern Italy with three specific objectives: to examine residents’ perceptions of the city of Verona’s image; to examine tourists’ perceptions of the city of Verona’s image and to compare the perceptions of the two groups. Design/methodology/approach The research was conducted through questionnaires collected among residents and tourists in Verona. Questionnaires were based on a multi-item scale addressing four dimensions of the city image. Findings The findings show that residents and tourists hold similar perceptions of city image regarding services and leisure, security and entertainment. The only significant difference in city image concerns the municipal facilities. Specifically, residents are more critical than tourists about this dimension of city image. Practical implications The research provides useful implications for policy makers and destination management organisations, and shows some strengths and weaknesses of Verona. Originality/value The study addresses the image of a medium-sized city that is typical in the Italian context, thus enhancing knowledge about city image. In addition, by testing and enhancing a scale previously used only to measure residents’ perceptions, the study provides a common measurement instrument to compare tourists’ and residents’ perceptions.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Henry Reed’s “A Map of Verona” became the title piece of the only poetry collection published by this multi-talented Englishman (1946). By recalling his trip to Naples and prophesying his devotion to Verona, the poem foreshadows Reed’s lifelong passion for Italy. In “A Map of Verona,” Reed is unique among map-poets in presenting himself as the star-crossed lover of a place, whose mapped image he eroticizes into the beloved’s body. Because Reed ultimately rejects his map as illusory, the poem invites us to consider the type of map he was gazing at while composing “A Map of Verona.” This paper, the fourth in a series about the use of poetry in the teaching of geography, argues that Reed might have used the 1928 edition of Italy from the Alps to Naples, one of the popular Baedeker travel guides esteemed for their accurate maps and plans. Yet a gulf separates the Baedeker map of Verona from earlier, more romantic depictions of the city. Perhaps no image comes closer to sharing Reed’s sensibility than the complementary views of Verona displayed in Braun and Hogenberg’s magnificent Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1581).

AbstractGaetano Spandri (1796–1859) was a “diligent scholar of the physical sciences,” a private collector and maker of scientific instruments who worked in Verona in the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in Verona, the city famous as the setting of Shakespeare’s iconic masterpiece Romeo and Juliet Spandri was primarily a physicist and astronomer, but he was also interested in meteorology and natural sciences. The main sources of information about his scientific work are handwritten papers, parts of his private correspondence, and scientific reports kept at the Verona Academy of Agriculture. For most of his life, he collaborated with the physicist Giuseppe Zamboni and was in contact with important physicists and astronomers of his time. His private apartment was equipped with a rich library, an astronomical and meteorological observatory, and a large room where he gathered a rich and important collection of scientific instruments.

Abstract (sommario):
Luigi Lippomano was a deeply worried man. He had heard that Lutheran ideas were being debated openly in Verona—even in such inappropriate places as “the piazzas, the workshops, the taverns, and even the women's washrooms.” As bishop of Verona, responsible for the city's spiritual health, he feared that he would see the city reduced to outright heresy. He felt increasingly stymied, watching his flock “become more corrupted every day” from inappropriate books and conversation, the “idle chatter of a few gossips.” And so, at a certain point, he had had enough. “How can I … stay silent,” he asked, “cross my hands, close my eyes, shut my ears, and act like a mute dog that cannot growl?” The result of his frustration and fury was a series of publications seeking to block the perceived threat of Protestant infiltration.

Abstract (sommario):
Paul F. Grendler suggested the year of 1420 as a symbolic date marking the dawn of Renaissance humanist teaching in the Latin education system. In 1420, the commune of Verona employed Guarino Guarini da Verona (1374–1460) to teach on the basis of Cicero’s letters and speeches. The anniversary has posed an opportunity to challenge a stereotype of two epochs: the Middle Ages and Renaissance, perpetuated in contemporary narration. I have presented my own image of these epochs, synthetic and simplified, yet based on historical facts. The synthetic approach to the similarities and differences between the Middle Ages and Renaissance, suggested here, is coherent with the changes which took place at the dawn of Italian Renaissance education (presented in the second part of the article). I have found out that this development was possible owing to personal contacts among humanists and their familiarity with inspiring texts. I have also discovered that before 1420, before Renaissance humanist education was introduced to public city schools, it had left its mark on self-education, informal relations, private city schools and urban home schooling. Only then did studia humanitatis became attractive to Italian communes and started to employ teachers knowledgeable about the new curriculum. The differences between the Renaissance and medieval education models in Italian public city schools include primarily the means at hand (i.e. the curriculum, the obligatory reading and partly the teaching organisation). They did not pertain to the major goals set by the then teachers (i.e. providing children and adolescents with knowledge and skills that they found useful in adult life, coupled with moral teaching and developing their habits). In my opinion, the Renaissance education model is continuation of the medieval model rather than its opposition because these two models complement each other harmoniously.

Abstract A fairly new medium for westerners, manga joins the variety of already existing “shakespeares”, bringing a fresh and vivid perspective on some of the most famous Shakespearean plays. This paper discusses several representations of space, with a particular focus on the city (Verona), the Capulet ballroom, and Juliet‘s bedroom, as they are rendered by artists in three manga transmediations of Romeo and Juliet coming from different cultural contexts (British, American, and Japanese). The paper will also explore the ways in which the three cultures play with Shakespeare‘s original Italian setting and negotiate their influence over one another at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The recent developments in urban conservation and urban archaeology have given considerable importance to the presentation of urban archaeological remains to the public in order to raise public awareness for conservation. Parallel to this, in the last decade, urban planners have begun to seek for alternatives for creating sustainable places with the emphasis on sustainable urban development. These two goals of different disciplines meet themselves in the integration of urban archaeological remains to modern town and to modern life in historic town centers. In this context, this thesis aims to discuss how these urban archaeological resources can be integrated to everyday life in historic town centers. This is achieved by investigating two successful European cases Tarragona and Verona, and then discussing their possible contributions to a Turkish case Tarsus.

In this study is highlighted the Vereda subsystem, which integrates the various vegetation typical types of the Cerrado that is going to confer it a great specificity landscape. From the bigger knowledge about the Vereda subsystem is possible to characterize it as a Cerrado typical landscape, which has as its symbol, the Buriti palm (Mauritia vinifera Mart.) generally it is built since a drainage system surface regulated by regional climate regime. The Vereda subsystem has a great relationship with higher soil moisture, which can be obtained from the leakage of the water table, poor drainage of an area or proximity to waterways. Its importance is due to be generally in headwater areas, but can occur in other environments, besides being a refuge for fauna and flora. The balance of Vereda subsystem is essential for the maintenance of water resources in Cerrado. Given the importance of the Vereda subsystem, is the purpose of this study, in which we seek to know it better. Thus, our aim was to understand the factors of origin and development of Vereda subsystem, as well as the analysis of its geomorphological modeling in different area of the traditional tabular surface, performing this analysis in the municipality of Goiandira, which is located in Goiás Southeast, in order to be a spatial area that presents particular landscape, helping the development of research, besides being a good representation of Cerrado area and also the Biome socio-economic occupation process, with livestock as the main activity responsible for the land use. By analyzing the current geomorphological modeling and field research found that this is perfectly capable to represent the Vereda subsystem which is presented all over the Cerrado. However, it was required some changes in nomenclature and also a better characterization of each of the eight existing geomorphological models. In Goiandira city was found 100 Vereda subsystems that occur in less dissected areas and usually in places that provide a water table interception or moisture soil. It was found in the Goiandira municipality, six of eight geomorphological models of existing Vereda. It was also found that the main sources in the area surveyed are in Vereda environment and that they are going through an intense environmental degradation process and its preservation is necessary to maintain the water resources of the municipality and the region.

Abstract (sommario):
With the emergence of the industrial revolution, country people moved to the new industrial centers. Through this movement appeared a new social class, the working class, crowding in the cities and also in the suburbs around the factories. To minimize the distance between the places of work and the residences, a lot habitations appear suddenly out of earth around industrial factories. In those areas, simple social structures were created leading to a new city shape: the industrial city whose main characteristic, before the setting of the working class, is the factory or the mine, places full of industrial items, mechanical inventions and techniques. The present research aims at introducing this industrial city as the most typical product of the nineteenth century through its technical components and its working class. The city is considered as one of the main element in the novel as far as becoming the basic and strong support of their intrigue. Without neglecting the substancial and amazing effect and the consequences of the machine in the daily life and without forgetting that the technical revolution is supported and materialized by the machine itself, the thesis analyses, through the studied novels, the role of those machines in the emergence of the industrial city as well as its effects in the daily life of the working class. The study is developed by a portrait of the working class, main users of the machines and a description of the technical and industrial incarnations in their lifes, their work and their habits. With the nineteenth century's literature and especially through the naturalist movement, this social class is for the first time analysed by considering its monotonous daily life, its little dramas, its manners and its mentality. Therefore the negative effects of the industrialization and of the mechanization on the working class appear in the literature, and some writers try to solve the problem by creating utopia

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a corpus centred round jules verne's voyages extraordinaires and its coherence is meant to be psychothematic : travelling is seen as an exploration of death, and writing as an imaginary journey. Thus, travelling is not merely a dream of exhausting what a map of the world may offer, but also a dream of utopias : the utopias of the extraneous, of love, of the future, of a harmony between nature and society - such utopias are forced into the para- doxical exorcism which the various counter-utopias have formed: a moral evil explored by detective of fantastic narratives, a political evil seen as a repre- hension of desires and as the oppression inflicted by history- meanwhile science-fiction tries to see through a hazardous future. Hence our preference for the various aspects of the literature of limits, which, aware that the world is only our weltanschaaumg, is quite heedless of the rules of a reducing pseudo-realism. Therefore, the wonderful, the fantastic, science-fiction, utopias and counter-utopias, poetry and the exploration of death are as many ways of expressing not the preposterousness but the infinite significance of the world. Let transcendency begin with writing, such was, perhaps, our clew, from the first to the last of these texts

Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation explores how the combination of pious practice, economic activity, and religious poverty shaped the architecture of the mendicants in medieval Verona. It also examines how the presence of the friars affected the city. By the thirteenth century, the populated centers of northern Italy were fertile grounds for heretical movements, religious skepticism, and anti-clerical attitudes. The mendicant orders developed as a response to the crisis of the medieval church in the city and provided a new concept of the religious vocation, one committed to voluntary poverty and the conversion of heretics. The most important representatives of the new orders were the Franciscans and Dominicans, who centered their religious mission in an urban context where the growth of commerce and a literate and numerate middle class required a new approach to pastoral care, one that directly addressed both doctrinal and social issues. The friars revolutionized traditional religious practice: they used exterior sites as extensions of liturgical space and their innovative approach to church architecture emphasized function and utility.

Existing studies on mendicant building have traditionally emphasized the formal characteristics of the monuments, examining churches in isolation, with little concern for context, use, and sequence of construction. This dissertation moves beyond this approach to consider the broader circumstances that frame the appearance of mendicant houses. It examines how the Franciscan church of S. Fermo Maggiore, the Dominican church of S. Anastasia, and their respective communities, responded to the dynamics of urban Verona. The study includes revised construction narratives and new dates for S. Fermo and S. Anastasia that emphasize the process of construction--how the friars approached their building projects--and the role of lay patronage in the configuration of architectural space. As research reveals, the friars began to erect their conventual complexes before instigating construction or reconstruction of the churches themselves, and this sequence had significant implications for how the friars used the spaces in and around their convent for preaching and liturgical celebrations. They planned or reconfigured their architectural space to both appeal to and accommodate the lay public and their pious practices, including sermon attendance, burial, and the veneration of local saints. Modifications to the exterior spaces around the convents likewise indicate their liturgical importance. By investigating the specific interactions between the mendicants and the city of Verona, this dissertation explores how the architecture of the friars expressed aspects of the society in which they operated.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper deals with the architectural commissions of Atto, during the thirty years in which the religious was first prior general of the Vallombrosani and then bishop of Pistoia (1125-1153). The churches that still have the structure and decorations of the 12th century are particularly analyzed, for example: Santa Maria di Montepiano, San Michele di Plaiano and San Michele di Salvenero in north-western Sardinia, San Paolo a Ripa d'Arno in Pisa and others. Before the year 1140 Atto obtained a relic of san Jacopo the Major, which in 1145 was placed in a chapel in the first two spans of the southern nave of the Cathedral of San Zeno in Pistoia. This chapel was configured as an almost independent space from the rest of the basilica. This initiative brought important artists to Pistoia who exalted the new role of apostolic see of the city and worked in the churches of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas (1162), Sant’Andrea (1166) and San Bartolomeo in Pantano (1167). The incidence of this situation also reverberated on the nearby city of Prato, where the Cathedral (before 1163), despite the autonomist aims of the local clergy, clearly received the constructive influences of the Pistoian Cathedral. The final part of the article analyzes the unfinished church of San Jacopo al Grigliano (1396-1407), in the Province of Verona, which is the most important and majestic sanctuary dedicated to san Jacopo in Northern Italy

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we take Verona as an entry point to analyse “anti-gender” mobilizations in Italy and transfeminist reactions. We provide an overview of the Italian “anti-gender” campaign by describing the role of Catholic actors and the political Right. We therefore examine the many forms these mobilizations have taken, especially between 2013 and 2017, and some of the responses by activists and academics during those years. We then consider some exemplary cases of both “antigender” attacks and transfeminist reactions that took place between 2018 and 2019. In particular, we focus on the so-called Pillon decree, which displays the link between “antigender” movements and legislative initiatives, on the Zelger motion against abortion presented by the Verona City Council, and on the 13th World Congress of Families that took place in Verona. We conclude with an examination of the reactions to these events – the “Verona transfeminist city” demonstration and the creation of GIFTS, the Italian network of gender studies – in order to show the strength of the counterattack.

Abstract (sommario):
The first section of this chapter describes the Veronese League, the group of city communes that first rose in rebellion against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa around LLQO, of which no documentation survives. However, a number of chronicles, usually contemporary with these events, describe its rise, offering varying points of view. The work of Cardinal Boso is the only source that gave a name to the rebellious alliance–Veronensium Societas–translated as ‘League of the Veronese March’. The second section describes the formation of the Lombard League from 1167 to 1183. It also deals with the Verona, Bergamo, and Piacenza, that is, respectively, a former member of the Veronese League, a former imperial supporter, and one of the cities that had been defeated by the emperor in 1162.

Abstract (sommario):
“Italy’s Suburban Amphitheaters” traces the benefits that a city might derive from placing a major entertainment building in the suburb, concentrating on examples at Verona, Capua, Herdonia, and Ocriculum. Not least, suburban amphitheaters took advantage of the zone’s open space to manage large festival crowds that included locals as well as the residents of neighboring cities. At the same time, the Italian highway system brought many regional and long-distance travelers to the suburbs, making a suburban amphitheater a particularly effective means of communicating competition with neighboring cities while at the same time expressing participation in a larger shared culture. Nearby monumental tombs, moreover, reinforced an amphitheater’s message, enhancing the urban façade while celebrating the city’s most prominent residents. In some cases, this interaction could even recall the architecture of the capital and declare a local endorsement of imperial power.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract What was merely a natural assumption for Gibbon became a certainty for many others. Yet Gibbon does not really say anything in support of his hypothesis. Augustus rebuilt Rome in marble, but Rome is a special case. ‘Scarcely had the proud structure of the Coliseum been dedicated at Rome, before edifices of a smaller scale indeed, but of the same design and materials, were erected for the use, and at the expense, of the cities of Capua and Verona. The inscription of the stupendous bridge of Alcantara attests that it was thrown over the Tagus by the contribution of a few Lusitanian communities.’Gibbon then devotes two pages to the munificence of Herodes Atticus, the wealthy Athenian, before returning to public buildings erected by the emperors in the city of Rome. He is careful in noting who paid for the work in Rome and who did so in the provinces. ‘The public .monuments with which Hadrian adorned every province of the empire were executed not only by his orders, but under his immediate inspection.’ Here, however, Gibbon does not say Hadrian paid for the work.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Renaissance Italy contained an array of governments. The South was a nominally unified kingdom, but sometimes functioned as a loose federation of noble baronies. In the centre, the papal state was a composite of cities and territories mostly governed by local lords and communes. Though popes made extravagant claims to universal temporal and spiritual authority, they could not even contain the R man nobility. The centre and north (Venice excepted) were officially part of the Holy Roman Empire, but by 1200 nearly every city was an independent commune. After 1300 republican government survived in Venice, Florence, Siena, Lucca, Perugia, and intermittently in Bologna and Genoa. But many communes were supplanted by lordships, or signorie, which first emerged as unofficial regimes of factional leaders and later gained legitimacy as hereditary dynasties: the Este in Ferrara, Visconti in Milan, Della Scala in Verona, Gonzaga in Mantua, Carrara in Padua, Montefeltro in Urbino, and a host of lesser ruling families, especially in the Romagna. By the fifteenth century most cities were absorbed into the territorial dominions of the emerging regional powers: Milan, Venice, Plorence, and the papal state.

Abstract (sommario):
The history of the Veronese hospitals constitutes one of the most important and interesting chapters of the urban events. St. Zeno in his sermon on the avarice, already praised the Veronese inhabitants for their great availability toward suffering and sick people, to the point that almost every monastery and parishes became a reception centre for pilgrims, distressed and sick people. Population growth implied to improve the health initiatives. The events happened in Verona at the beginning of the twentieth century are a precious proof of the contribution which doctors and wise administrators offered to the Veronese health care system. It is a history intimately related to the munificent charity thanks to which the local protagonists sustained the birth and the development of the hospital complex (bequest of Alessandri, Cressotti Zorzi, Failoni, Roveda, only for quoting some of them). The hospital administration, together with doctors and inhabitants faced with burning and active debates, the transfer of the civil hospital from its seat, situated in the thin urban fabric of the city centre, to a suburb area: Borgo Trento. Borgo Trento is the hospital which the Veronese feel like their own hospital, characterized by a system of pavilions, long tree-lined avenue and luxuriant gardens. A new hospital complex, Borgo Roma Policlinico, was born in the 1970s in the south suburb of the city, offering great town planning and charitable opportunities. The integration of the two hospitals and the constitution of the Azienda Ospedaliera Integrata Verona are most recent history (2010), but seems follow the steps of the union between the Alessandri Children’s Hospital and the Sant’Antonio Civil Hospital, as a prosecution of the troubled hospital history of fusions, transfers and divisions.

Abstract (sommario):
Military fortifications have always played a key role in territorial defense. Their location and visibility often depended on strategic military choices, such as shape. The geometric development of the latter is the result of centuries of refinement of construction techniques concerning the evolution of warfare, the architectural consistency of the fortified area, and adaptation to the orography of the territory. A final common aspect is their history, often marked by transformations that have determined the architecture's level of preservation and use. These architectures can be perfectly preserved, destroyed, or fallen into disuse. Of the latter, many examples are scattered throughout the territories, a fascinating constellation of vestiges that have lost their visibility and importance. The instruments of surveying, drawing, and representation can support the virtual rediscovery of the ancient role of architecture. This research project focuses on the Fort of Santa Caterina in Verona. Originally called Werk Hess, it is a fortification located south of Verona and built between 1848 and 1856. Only a few small traces remain today, but the Fort of Santa Caterina was an architecture of remarkable beauty because of its naturalistic and environmental inclusion, an architectural and perspective cornerstone of the fortified city due to its dominant position. Through a comprehensive course of source analysis, the survey of the existing territory, and representation in plan and space, the research project aims to give a virtual shape to this military marvel, laying the groundwork for more complex multi-disciplinary analyses of the artifact and the surrounding area.

In Structural Health Monitoring 2023. Destech Publications, Inc., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.12783/shm2023/37026.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, the number of applications of Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) techniques for structural health monitoring (SHM) purposes has constantly raised. One of the main advantages that MT-InSAR can provide is the possibility to analyze wide areas, such as entire cities or archaeological sites. Thus, several interferometric algorithms have proven to be particularly valid when applied in urban contexts, considering the high reflectivity provided by the structures. In addition, the growing availability of high-resolution SAR satellite constellations, such as the Italian COSMO-SkyMed and the German TerraSAR-X, allows obtaining significantly accurate measures and detecting high density of Measurement Points (MP). Consequently, sufficiently detailed information on single structures can be recorded, permitting to perform both urban scale and local scale analyses. On the other hand, several drawbacks are still present, mostly related to the hardly post-processing processes needed. Indeed, beside the technical difficulties that can be encountered during the analysis (e.g. geocoding errors and noisiness in the time series), an expert interpretation of the results is still required to avoid misinterpretation of data. Anyway, considering both advantages and disadvantages of the technique, MT-InSAR undoubtedly represents a very cost-effective tool in the structural monitoring field. In this paper, MT-InSAR applications for structural monitoring on the Italian Cultural Heritage context are presented. The analyses have been conducted at both urban and local scale, processing images acquired by COSMO-SkyMed constellation in Stripmap mode (~3 meters resolution). First, spatial interpolation algorithms have been implemented to estimate the overall deformations at urban scale. Subsequently, the attention has focused on some of the main cultural assets of the case-study cities, investigating the MPs detected on the structures themselves. In this work, three cities are presented as case-studies: Verona, Padova (North Italy), and L’Aquila (central Italy). For each city, a specific Cultural Heritage structure has been selected for the local scale analysis, namely the Roman Arena in Verona, the Scrovegni Chapel in Padova, and the Civic Tower in L’Aquila. All these monuments have been monitored by traditional SHM techniques for years, with the possibility to correlate and validate onsite and satellite data.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal of e-Skills and Lifelong Learning, Volume 14] The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of awareness, perceived benefits, types of data collected and perceived control on the privacy concerns of digital natives living in what is considered the smart city of Cape Town, South Africa. Background: Smart city projects have been known to bring benefits such as sustainable economic development to cities. However one may wonder what and how certain factors influence the privacy concerns that come along with the implementation of smart cities particularly in the African context. In a time when information can be easily transferred, accessed and even shared, it is no surprise that people may have inclinations to be very protective of their personal information. Methodology: The study is quantitative in nature. Data has been collected using an online survey and analysed statistically. Contribution: This study contributes to scientific literature by detailing the impact of specific factors on the privacy concerns of citizens living in an African city Findings: The findings reveal that the more impersonal data is collected by the Smart City of Cape Town, the lower the privacy concerns of the digital natives. The findings also show that higher the need of the digital natives to be aware of the security measure put in place by the city, the higher their privacy concerns Recommendations for Practitioners: Practitioners (i.e. policy makers) should ensure that it is a legal requirement to have security measures in place to protect the privacy of the citizens while col-lecting data within the smart city of Cape Town. These regulations should be made public to appease any apprehensions from its citizens towards smart city implementations. Less personal data should also be collected on the citizens. Recommendation for Researchers: Researchers should further investigate issues related to privacy concerns in the context of African developing countries as they have unique cultural and philosophical perspectives that might influence how people perceive privacy. Impact on Society: Cities are becoming “smarter” and in developing world context like Africa, privacy issues might not have as a strong influence as is the case in the developing world. Future Research: Further qualitative studies should be conducted to better understand issues related to perceived benefits, perceived control, awareness of how data is collected and level of privacy concerns of digital natives in developing countries.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 15] This paper describes and information system for the maintenance and management of municipal lighting systems that also serves as a decision support tool for reducing power consumption on urban lighting. Background: Many municipalities are financially constrained and unable to invest in improving their lighting infrastructure. We propose a very efficient and inexpensive way to set up the database and provide city leaders with tools to improve their system efficiently. Methodology: An information database for the data management and an Integer Programming model for deriving the optimal investment plan. Contribution: This paper contributes to the fields of urban economics and sustainability. Findings: Informing management and workers about the status of the system and how to optimize it will reward the city with considerable savings and improve the service quality. Recommendations for Practitioners: The application of this model, even in a small scale such as a neighborhood can improve citizen’s quality of life without a heavy burden on the city budget. Recommendation for Researchers: There is a growing need for cost-effective means to improve urban management. Innovative ideas that meet these goals should be researched and developed. Impact on Society: First, it allows reduction in carbon emissions and light pollution by reducing power consumption and over-luminous lighting levels. Second, financially constrained municipalities can manage their systems at a very low cost. Future Research: A full scale application is needed in order to evaluate the city-wide benefits of the system.

Sarricolea Espinoza, Pablo, e Hugo Romero Aravena. "Análisis de los factores condicionantes sobre las temperaturas de emisión superficial en el Área Metropolitana de Valparaíso (AMV)". In International Conference Virtual City and Territory. Barcelona: Centre de Política de Sòl i Valoracions, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.5821/ctv.7555.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The geographic and urban characteristics are investigated that determine the distribution of the temperatures of superficial emission in the Metropolitan Area of Valparaíso, the one that presents/displays topoclimatology in its interior which they remarkably affect the thermal field of the city. Between the characteristics they emphasize the referred ones to the greater one and smaller influence than exerts on the temperatures the proximity to the sea, the elevation, the aspect, the ground humidity, the presence of green areas, the reflectivity of the ground and the constructions, those that are correlated with the temperatures through models of multiple regression stepwise. One analyzes in the astronomical stations of winter and summer, and significant differences between the factors settle down that modify the temperatures in both periods of the year. The maximum amplitude of urban temperature according to the Landsat satellite demonstrate until 17,4ºC in summer and 8,8ºC in winter. In summer the factors that explain better the distribution of the temperatures correspond to the humidity, the green reflectivity of ground, proximity to the sea and areas (these last measures from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI), being the zones of Quilpué and Villa Alemana put under greater temperatures when conforming a Surface Urban Heat Island (SUHI), and the rest of the city are colder than this zone, with exception of the district port of Valparaíso and the dune fields of Concón; the freshest areas of the city agree with the green and natural areas located in Viña del Mar (Club of Golf Granadilla, Sporting Club, Sausalito lagoon and the Naval Club) and summits of hills. During the winter, the most representative factors of the temperatures are the ground reflectivity, aspect and density of population, concentrating themselves the SUHI mainly in the center of Valparaíso, Concón and the districts of North exhibition of Viña del Mar (emphasizing the district Gómez Carreño) being the zones of Quilpué and Villa A lemana less warm than the rest of the city.

Abstract (sommario):
There are two new persons born each and every second on Earth, persons that will need space to live, just as we do. Should we build new cities, then, without question? The “population of a single day” is going to require territory, which, according to today’s standards, equals the area of France or Ukraine (Zipser). Therefore villages, cities and especially metropolises require much more space for expansion. Things become problematic when metropolises are faced with a lack of space to expand Metropolises behave like cancerous tumors – they try to possess or occupy any urban structure within their reach, including agricultural lands and forests. Is it even possible to plan such a rapid growth? Certain cases point to the fact that it is indeed possible, while others – that it is not possible at all. Thus, we are faced with the question of what should we do when the development of metropolises outpaces even the fastest planning processes? In these cases, metropolitan authorities need to anticipate problems related to infrastructure, transportation, as well as unemployment and rising crime rates. The metropolitan way of life causes not only spatial, but also social problems as well. The subdivisions within the social structures of metropolises are transformed in accordance with the quality of their spatial structures and vice versa. The question as to who “owns” the public spaces of metropolises is more important than the real ownership of the land they are built upon. Public spaces become an expression of their respective metropolises through the image of their urban and architectural forms. The inhabitants and people “that are coming in” can only identify themselves with and respect the rules of the space that they live, work and relax in only under the condition of the existence of spatial order. Contrary to those metropolitan areas that have been abandoned or are underused, the social aspect of reusing land that has once been converted from an agricultural form of use, or any other for that matter, plays an important part in the appropriate creation of social and spatial balance in the development of public spaces, as well as modern metropolises, oriented towards innovative technologies.

Norte Pinto, Nuno, António Pais Antunes e Josep Roca Cladera. "The incorporation of accessibility in land use transition potential for cellular automata models". In International Conference Virtual City and Territory. Mexicali: Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.5821/ctv.7618.

Abstract (sommario):
Cellular automata (CA) models are used for simulating land use change for more than two decades. These models have a simple structure based on a cellular partition of space, considering a finite set of cell states (or land uses) and their interaction within a given neighborhood area, changing throughout time under a set of transition rules. Transition rules are based on more or less sophisticated measures of state transition: they can be more complex rules that try to incorporate the different drivers of land use change or they can be purely probabilistic rules that take into account only the states of neighboring cells. This last approach is often based on a measure of a transition potential that establishes a rank for state transition for every cell. There are many drivers of land use change and accessibility is acknowledged as being one of the most important ones. At the same time, transportation systems (thus accessibility) are also influenced by land use change. This suggests that CA models are potentially good tools to simulate these phenomena by considering the cross-interdependences between both. In this presentation, we make a reflection on how accessibility can be measured, incorporated, and used to improve CA transition rules based on transition potentials towards more representative models of land use change. We address not only modeling requirements but also the potential of using CA models to evaluate both the impacts of transportation policies in land use change, and vice versa.

"Comportamiento termico de edificios de departamentos en Santiago de Chile: segmentación de nichos en el mercado inmobiliario privado a partir de las exigencias de la reglamentación térmica nacional". Abstract (sommario):
Santiago de Chile (33°27’S and 70°42’W), capital city of the country, is placed in the central valley. It has a Mediterranean climate with a long dry season (between 7 and 8 months). Its annual average temperature is 12,2°C, whereas the thermal oscillation is considerable: there is almost 13°C between January and July average temperatures (hottest and coldest months, respectively) and the difference between maximum and minimum temperatures ranges between 10°C and 16°C during all the year. According to the National Statistics Institute, 37.4% and 36.0% of new housing during 2006 were built using mainly brick masonry and concrete in their walls, respectively. In both cases, thermal insulation was not generally considered. On the contrary for the heating period, a favorable thermal performance in summer should be expected (low thermal insulation in combination to high thermal mass). However, some recent studies show the completely opposite scenario, since an important percentage of users declare overheating in their own dwellings. This apparent contradiction could be understood from a database limitation, due to these official data do not reflect the impact of the current thermal regulation, which is in force since January 2007. Notwithstanding the required standards are weak in comparison to the international state-of-art (e.g. 1,9 W/m2K as maximum U-value for walls in Santiago), nowadays apartment buildings in Santiago are including at least 20 mm of thermal insulation in their walls to give compliance to the code. This paper proposes a series of dynamic thermal simulations to apartment buildings in Santiago, with the aim of establish the impact of different constructive solutions by means of thermal behavior, both in winter and summer. These digital models are statistically based on the typologies offered in the private real estate market during both periods 2001-2002 and 2006-2007, according to a database from Portalinmobiliario.com. These were determined using a multivariate analysis of their attributes – producing homogeneous market niches - through the hierarchical clustering technique. These homogeneous niches were identified in the real estate private submarkets, assessing different attributes. Thermal simulations were made using the TAS software, a dynamic-state digital tool. According to the results, the implementation of the thermal regulation – intended mainly to reduce heating consumption – have produced unfavorable comfort conditions in all the studied market niches, in comparison with the business as usual scenario. These conclusions allow establishing challenges and opportunities for the private real estate market, in order to integrate new thermal regulations with the private market reality.

Morriss, Matthew C. Interim Geologic Map of the Vernal NE Quadrangle, Uintah County, Utah. Utah Geological Survey, giugno 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.34191/ofr-762.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Vernal NE 7.5' quadrangle is located at the northern boundary of the Colorado Plateau physiographic province, within the Uinta Basin sub-province (Fenneman and Johnson, 1946). The Middle Rocky Mountains, in Fenneman and Johnson’s (1946) classification, is located east and north of the quadrangle. The quadrangle includes Ashley Valley, centered on Ashley Creek, which drains the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains. The western part of the quadrangle is defined by the northwest-southeast-trending Asphalt Ridge and the west-dipping slope along the flank of the ridge. The northeastern part of the quadrangle is largely hills composed of Mancos Shale with a cap of pediment gravel (Sprinkel, 2006). The alluvial valley of Ashley Creek has developed into three distinct communities: Maeser, Naples, and Vernal, which is the most populous city and the County Seat. Nearly all of Ashley Valley is privately owned, allowing for continued growth of these communities and extensive farming operations. Tracts of the quadrangle along its western and eastern edges are a mix of Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. The primary goals of this map are to provide up-to-date geologic information on the geology surrounding Vernal for the urbanized valley and to break out more detail on Mesozoic units in this region of the Uinta Basin. This work builds on previous mapping by Doug Sprinkel (UGS, retired) (Sprinkel, 2007, 2023). Geology on the periphery and for edge-matching was provided at the 1:24,000 scale through maps of the Dry Fork, Steinaker Reservoir, Donkey Flat, and Vernal NW quadrangles (Haddox et al., 2010; Jensen et al., 2016; Webb, 2017). Mapping was conducted using a combination of black-and-white stereographic photographs from 1937, 1938, and 1974 (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], 1937; BLM, 1974) and from 1-meter-resolution light detection and ranging (lidar) data (U.S. Geological Survey, 2018). Mapping was aided with the help of relative elevation models, a derivative from a digital elevation model (DEM), to ascertain the elevation of different terrace treads above the modern river channel (Slaughter and Hubert, 2014; Larrieu, 2022).

Wang, Chih-Hao, e Na Chen. Does California High-Speed Rail Promote Accessibility for Station Cities?: Case Study of Fresno and Merced. Mineta Transportation Institute, maggio 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2024.2358.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
California High-Speed Rail (CHSR) will largely change transportation cost across the state after it starts operating. Past studies show that only Fresno and Merced among station cities in the Central Valley would attract more future activities with the CHSR. The establishment of active CHSR also implies a new daily living sphere for all the station cities, and, therefore, accessibility to work and residential amenities should be reviewed to inform planners of future land-use and transportation developments. A research framework has been developed better to understand the impact of CHSR on job and amenity accessibility by driving, transit, and walking in Fresno and Merced. The results show the opportunity cost of accessibility for using CHSR for a 25-minute ride from Fresno to Merced and vice versa. The study then compares the original accessibility reached in the home city within 45 minutes and the accessibility reached from the station in the other city within the remaining time after arriving at the station from home. A t-test was also used to examine whether the newly accessible jobs and amenities are significantly better with the CHSR. Finally, these results were mapped in contours showing equal accessibility before and after the start of CHSR operation for all blog groups in the two cities. This study not only adds to the literature on the impact of high-speed-rails on accessibility to jobs and amenities, but also contributes to the practice of public transit and car-sharing for better accessibility by providing planning information through the mapping of the results.

Abstract (sommario):
This report is adapted from the forthcoming Climate Instruments for the Transport Sector (CITS) report written by Cornie Huizenga, convener of the Partnership for Sustainable Low Carbon Transport (SLoCaT), and Stefan Bakker, from the Energy Research Center of the Netherlands. Under the CITS project, studies were carried out in two Asian and two Latin American cities to explore how NAMAs, a new financial mechanism being developed under the UNFCCC, may support emissions reductions from urban transport policies and programs. The authors received valuable input from: Dario Hidalgo, from EMBARQ/World Resources Institute, for the Belo Horizonte case study; Frederic Rudolph, Urda Eichhorst and Wolfgang Sterk, from Wuppertal Institute, for the Hefei case study; Holger Dalkmann and Ko Sakamoto, from Transport Research Laboratory, for the Jakarta case study; and Martina Jung and Christian Ellermann, from ECOFYS, for the Mexico case study. This report was edited by Peter Shifter. The CITS project was guided by Rafael Acevedo-Daunas, Maria Cordeiro, Vera Lucia Vicentini, Maria Netto and Francisco Arango at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and by Jamie Leather and Sharad Saxena at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The two case studies in Asian cities were financed by the ADB, and the two Latin American studies by the IDB. The combined report was financed by the ADB and the publication financed by the IDB as part of a combined effort within an MOU signed by both institutions and their participation in the SLoCaT partnership.
