Abstract (sommario):
Background Chronic and mental health conditions are increasingly prevalent worldwide. As devices in our everyday lives offer more and more voice-based self-service, voice-based conversational agents (VCAs) have the potential to support the prevention and management of these conditions in a scalable manner. However, evidence on VCAs dedicated to the prevention and management of chronic and mental health conditions is unclear. Objective This study provides a better understanding of the current methods used in the evaluation of health interventions for the prevention and management of chronic and mental health conditions delivered through VCAs. Methods We conducted a systematic literature review using PubMed MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. We included primary research involving the prevention or management of chronic or mental health conditions through a VCA and reporting an empirical evaluation of the system either in terms of system accuracy, technology acceptance, or both. A total of 2 independent reviewers conducted the screening and data extraction, and agreement between them was measured using Cohen kappa. A narrative approach was used to synthesize the selected records. Results Of 7170 prescreened papers, 12 met the inclusion criteria. All studies were nonexperimental. The VCAs provided behavioral support (n=5), health monitoring services (n=3), or both (n=4). The interventions were delivered via smartphones (n=5), tablets (n=2), or smart speakers (n=3). In 2 cases, no device was specified. A total of 3 VCAs targeted cancer, whereas 2 VCAs targeted diabetes and heart failure. The other VCAs targeted hearing impairment, asthma, Parkinson disease, dementia, autism, intellectual disability, and depression. The majority of the studies (n=7) assessed technology acceptance, but only few studies (n=3) used validated instruments. Half of the studies (n=6) reported either performance measures on speech recognition or on the ability of VCAs to respond to health-related queries. Only a minority of the studies (n=2) reported behavioral measures or a measure of attitudes toward intervention-targeted health behavior. Moreover, only a minority of studies (n=4) reported controlling for participants’ previous experience with technology. Finally, risk bias varied markedly. Conclusions The heterogeneity in the methods, the limited number of studies identified, and the high risk of bias show that research on VCAs for chronic and mental health conditions is still in its infancy. Although the results of system accuracy and technology acceptance are encouraging, there is still a need to establish more conclusive evidence on the efficacy of VCAs for the prevention and management of chronic and mental health conditions, both in absolute terms and in comparison with standard health care.

Abstract (sommario):
Aggregation of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, is regulated by fecal aggregation agents (pheromones), including volatile carboxylic acids (VCAs). We demonstrate that the gut microbial community contributes to production of these semiochemicals. Chemical analysis of the fecal extract of B. germanica revealed 40 VCAs. Feces from axenic cockroaches (no microorganisms in the alimentary tract) lacked 12 major fecal VCAs, and 24 of the remaining compounds were represented at extremely low amounts. Olfactory and aggregation bioassays demonstrated that nymphs strongly preferred the extract of control feces over the fecal extract of axenic cockroaches. Additionally, nymphs preferred a synthetic blend of 6 fecal VCAs over a solvent control or a previously identified VCA blend. To test whether gut bacteria contribute to the production of fecal aggregation agents, fecal aerobic bacteria were cultured, isolated, and identified. Inoculation of axenic cockroaches with individual bacterial taxa significantly rescued the aggregation response to the fecal extract, and inoculation with a mix of six bacterial isolates was more effective than with single isolates. The results indicate that the commensal gut microbiota contributes to production of VCAs that act as fecal aggregation agents and that cockroaches discriminate among the complex odors that emanate from a diverse microbial community. Our results highlight the pivotal role of gut bacteria in mediating insect–insect communication. Moreover, because the gut microbial community reflects the local environment, local plasticity in fecal aggregation pheromones enables colony-specific odors and fidelity to persistent aggregation sites.

Abstract (sommario):
Background and Objectives: Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) is widely used to evaluate urolithiasis. The NCCT attenuation, measured in Hounsfield units (HU), has been evaluated to predict stone characteristics. We propose a novel parameter, linear calculus density (LCD), and analyze variables from NCCT imaging to predict calcium oxalate (CaOx) stones, which are common and challenging to fragment. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with urolithiasis between 2014 and 2017. Among those, 790 patients were included. Based on the NCCT pre-treatment, the maximal stone length (MSL), mean stone density (MSD), and stone heterogeneity index (SHI) were obtained. In addition, the variation coefficient of stone density (VCSD = SHI/MSD × 100) and linear calculus density (LCD = VCSD/MSL) were calculated. In accordance with the stone analysis, the patients were divided into two groups (CaOx and non-CaOx groups). The logistic regression model and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve were used for predictive modeling. Results: In the CaOx group, the SHI, VCSD, and LCD were more significant than in the non-CaOx group (all p < 0.001). SHI (OR 1.002, 95% CI 1.001–1.004, p < 0.001), VCSD (OR 1.028, 95% CI 1.016–1.041, p < 0.001), and LCD (OR 1.352, 95% CI 1.270–1.444, p < 0.001) were significant independent factors for CaOx stones in the logistic regression models. The areas under the ROC curve for predicting CaOx stones were 0.586 for SHI, 0.66 for VCSD, and 0.739 for LCD, with a cut-point of 2.25. Conclusions: LCD can be a useful new parameter to provide additional information to help discriminate CaOx stones before treatment.

Abstract (sommario):
Alternative food networks (AFNs) have emerged to improve both environmental and socio-economic aspects of food provisioning, including the living and working conditions of farmers. Their objectives are supposed to be mediated through the shortening of chains and/or the implication of alternative value chain actors (VCAs). Through the application of a social life cycle assessment methodological proposal on two products from three Belgian AFNs, we first verify how the AFNs meet sustainability promises. Second, we investigate how such social sustainability of the assessed products is influenced by the differentiated configurations of chain governance in the AFNs. Such a discussion of root causes of social sustainability performances in product chains have been investigated very little as of yet. Our results show that AFN perform well in some aspects (consumer aspects, work satisfaction, social ties between VCAs), but in some others, AFN chains use similar mechanisms as the ones used by mainstream chains (unbalanced market power, unfair prices, and low commitment between VCAs), with potentially detrimental effects on profitability and employment conditions for VCAs located upstream, i.e., farms. Our framework is useful to highlight social hotspots in product chains, and to discuss these across the differences in the configurations of the chain layout and—in the end—chain governance.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction The first vascular composite allotransplantation (VCA) was performed in 1998, with the first post-burn VCA in 2003. Since then, 21 burn patients have been recipients of VCAs. Controversy exists regarding safety of VCA in burn patients due to high levels of immunologic sensitization attributed to use of cadaver allograft. We seek to understand unique considerations of VCA in burn reconstruction and its relative safety compared to VCA in non-burn reconstruction. Methods A systematic review of VCA in burn reconstruction was conducted using the PubMed, Media and EBSCO database to retrieve all articles and news stories studying VCA from Jan. 2000 to May 2019. Only articles containing composite tissue allotransplantation, VCA, and reconstructive surgery were included. Articles that did not report outcomes or patient information were excluded. Reported cases were grouped according to injury and tissue (face vs. upper extremity) with mortality as a dependent variable. Statistical analysis was performed with the Fisher exact test. Results Of 63 articles obtained, 21 met criteria. After secondary review by the senior author, 6 more articles were included. To date, 147 VCAs are reported in 112 patients, including 40 face VCAs and 107 upper extremity VCAs. Of these, 30 (20%) were performed for post-burn deformities, and 117 (80%) for non-burn deformities. A total of 21 post-burn patients received VCAs with 4 subsequent deaths (19%). Post-burn recipients of upper extremity VCAs had significantly higher mortality than non-burn recipients of the same (p = 0.01), but there was no significant difference in face VCA mortality (p = 1.0) or overall mortality (p = 0.06) between groups. Conclusions VCA is a forefront procedure employed worldwide for reconstruction of devastating injuries. Presently, burn patients are at greater risk of mortality after upper extremity VCA, but not face VCA. Burn patients will benefit from focused investigation of unique post-burn risk factors of VCA mortality. Applicability of Research to Practice Disparities between post-burn and non-burn VCA outcomes suggest the presence of unique risk factors in burn patients. Investigation of unique risk factors will improve safety of VCA for burn patients.

Abstract (sommario):
Vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) refer to en bloc heterogenous tissue that is transplanted to restore form and function after amputation or tissue loss. Rat limb VCA has emerged as a robust translational model to study the pathophysiology of these transplants. However, these models have predominately focused on hindlimb VCAs which does not translate anatomically to upper extremity transplantation, whereas the majority of clinical VCAs are upper extremity and hand transplants. This work details our optimization of rat forelimb VCA procurement and sub-normothermic machine perfusion (SNMP) protocols, with results in comparison to hindlimb perfusion with the same perfusion modality. Results indicate that compared to hindlimbs, rat forelimbs on machine perfusion mandate lower flow rates and higher acceptable maximum pressures. Additionally, low-flow forelimbs have less cellular damage than high-flow forelimbs based on oxygen uptake, edema, potassium levels, and histology through 2 hours of machine perfusion. These results are expected to inform future upper extremity VCA preservation studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Johnston, George P. "The relationship among organizational involvement, commitment, and success: a case study of Amway Corporation". Diss., Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/87669.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Traditionally, organizational commitment has been proposed as an important factor leading to desired behavioral consequences (Angle and Perry, 1981). Organizationally-committed individuals remain in an organization, perform reliably, and are even willing to make contributions to an organization's operation which go beyond what is expected of them (Schein, l980; Steers, 1977). One company that seems to rely heavily on the organizational commitment or its participants is Amway Corporation. Amway Corporation is a multi-level direct sales company that specializes in personal and home care products. In just 25 years it has grown from a low-budget company serving a regional market into a multimillion dollar corporation with markets in over 45 countries and territories and approximately one million distributors. Although some of Amway's remarkable organizational success must be attributed to product quality and its dynamic and inclusive recruitment policy, it seems possible that much of Amway's success must be traced back to the organizational commitment of its distributors. Amway Corporation attempts to enhance distributor commitment to the organization by providing material and non-material incentives, thereby promoting what Weber ( t 978) referred to as instrumental and value-rational, as well as affective forms of social action. The present study focused on the following research questions: What is the relationship between organizational commitment and successful Amway distributor task performance? What effect does the nature of distributor's organizational involvement have on the relationship between organizational commitment and distributor success? What role docs emotional attachment to Amway play in promoting successful distributor task performance? These different types of social action suggest different types of organizational involvement that might be exhibited by individuals in a complex organization. Based largely on the theoretical work of Etzioni (1961, 1975), and Clark and Wilson (1975), organizational involvement is conceptualized in the present study as the importance or material, purposive, and solidary incentives for distributor's continuing participation in Amway, and may be distinguished into two types: calculative and moral. Based on data collected on 121 Amway distributors, using two separate samples, this study found that there is a positive relationship between organizational commitment and distributor success. It was also found that organizational involvement and commitment are highly related. The hypothesis proposing that combining calculative and moral involvement greatly enhances the relationship between organizational commitment and overall distributor success was not supported. Calculative involvement and organizational commitment were found to have an interactive effect on overall distributor success. It was found that various time-use factors, such as number of months respondents had been in Amway, number of hours spent weekly motivating downline distributors, and the number of hours spent weekly selling products were also related to overall distributor success. The total number of hours spent weekly on Amway-related activities, and the number of hours spent weekly showing the Amway Sales and Marketing Plan were not significantly related to overall distributor success.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to demonstrate and confirm the utility of the wide spectrum of methods provided by the 3D and 4D ultrasound technology, in increasing the detection rate, monitoring, predicting and studying several obstetrical pathologies. Our study involved perinatal pathologies where management could be difficult. In particular we tried to go into diagnosis and prediction of chromosomal abnormalities, pre-eclampsia and severe pre-eclampsia requiring delivery prior to 32 weeks of gestation, some cardiac defect like complete and correct trasposition of the great arteries and the study of cardiac function in normal and growth restricted fetuses. Every scan was performed using a Voluson 730 ultrasound machine.(G. E. Healthcare). We used the traditional bidimensional ultrasound technology to measure distances (cardiac valves, fetal biometry), with color and pulsed Doppler use (blood vessels visualization like uterin arteries and umbilical artery, intracardiac blood flow, uterin arteries waveform visualization, measure of PI, TVI and cardiac trasvalvular flows). T raditional technique was integrated and comparated to the tridimensional and quadridimensional ones. Ultrasound 3D machines acquire a single volume of voxels by a sweep of ultrasound troughout the interest area, and this allows the 3D approach for the study of non-vascular structures. This provides a static image. The 4D technology adds movement and in particular the STIC software (Spatio-Temporal Image Correlation) allows to obtain a sequence of a single cardiac cicle, like a bidimensional examination in real time. Adding color is useful to verify the cardiac flows and the presence ofe several abnormalities. 4D Power Doppler use allowed study of placental vascularization indices like vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) e vascularization flow index (VFI). The VOCAL software was used to study the volume of a tissue, organ or cavity (for exemple the whole placenta or cardiac cavities) producing a sequence of several sections of the heart, each obtained after a rotation from the previous one. In each plane the contour was traced manually, and at the end, the computer provided the reconstruction of the ventricle and calculated its volume. To detect cardiac malformations such Trasposition of the great arteries we used the SonoVCAD software (Sonographically based Volume Computer-Aided anaLysis) that automatically retrieves diagnostic cardiac planes from a 4-dimensional volume of the fetal chest obtained with spatiotemporal image correlation (STIC). We finnally concluded that the 3D/4D technique provides several benefits, because the study of the volumes is possible offline, after sacnning and can be repeated by different operators or several times by the same operator, giving the possibility of double-blinded studies. The automatic approach shows good retrieval of diagnostic cardiac planes in fetuses with TGA, which may improve diagnostic efficacy for this disease. There is a good agreement between SV measured either by 2D Doppler or by 4D STIC. The 4D STIC represents a simple and rapid technique to estimate fetal SV and promises to become the method of choice. The combination of abnormal uterine artery Doppler and low placental volume at 11–14 weeks achieves better results than does either test alone in the prediction of pre-eclampsia. We provide normal ranges of placental vascular indices between 11 + 0 and 13 + 6 weeks of gestation, which may be useful in future research on placental vascularity in certain at-risk pregnancies. Additional studies are needed to further validate these methods and it’s very important to remember that to obtain a quality volume we need to have a good bidimensional image.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent advances in artificial intelligence have led changes to the operation, the capabilities, and the performance of a number of industries. Provision of mental health services is expected to experience a paradigm shift, with the introduction of artificial intelligence-based virtual conversational agents (VCAs). In this conceptual chapter, the authors introduce the term Personalised Anthropomorphic VCAs (PAVCAs). The chapter proposes the use of PAVCAs to support people suffering from Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD), following the loss of a beloved person, aiming to offer solace and companion. To drive meaningful change for the users and to deliver economic value and utility, the chapter argues for PAVCAs to be configured to characteristics of each user's beloved deceased one. Using two models, the authors suggest that the use of these platforms can comprise a reactive approach to the diagnosis of PGD; as well as a proactive approach, dealing with grief before PDG is manifested.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this article is to explore the teaching processes that use Quick Response (QR) codes and mobile devices to support blended learning at the National Institute of Telecommunications and ICT (INTTIC). The satisfactory results of our previous research show that the use of mobile technology could enhance accessibility and communication in a blended learning course. In Algeria, the mobile penetration rate stands at over 111% and 21% with 3G. Since most of our students have access to mobile technology, three in five were smartphones. Using this technology would encourage students to use their phones to send questions to their teachers, listen to a podcast and snip the quick response (QR) codes. This paper introduces the implementations of QR codes, vcard and QR voice as a new tool in the Moodle platform in our institute. The QR code contains the URL of the page of one particular Moodle course and quiz are added to the bottom of Moodle. The students' satisfaction had been acknowledged as an important factor in order to estimate the effectiveness of a blended learning course.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Anyone who uses e-mail should avoid the following mistakes: Giving confidential information in an unsecured e-mail. Your credit card number, for instance, can easily be sent throughout the world. It’s best to send credit-card information only through secure Web sites. See “How to Shop Safely Online” on p.143. Opening attachments from strangers. Never open an e-mail that has an attachment that is vague or says “Check this out!” A virus may spread by invading the contact list on a computer and sending itself to every e-mail address on the list. Opening unsolicited e-mail without first scanning for viruses. There are several free anti-virus programs available, and they should be updated regularly. Hitting “reply” to an unsolicited e-mail when asking to be taken off the sender’s list. By hitting “reply” you may be opening up your account to a deluge of spam. Hitting “reply all” when only the sender needs a response. Does everyone really need to know your reply? Think before you reply, especially if the e-mail was sent to a very large group. Forwarding hoaxes or jokes. Most people get too much e-mail, and they would prefer a real note from you, not a hoary joke or, worse, a scaremongering urban legend or false charity scam. If something sounds too good (or too shocking) to be true, it probably is. Check the web for information before you send something on; www.snopes.com is a great site for checking stories. Sending an e-mail without a signature. It’s helpful to include at least your name and e-mail address at the bottom of your message, especially if you are e-mailing someone for the first time. Don’t use a vCard (virtual business card). It may be mistaken for a virus. Sending an e-mail without spell-checking it. Most e-mail systems spell-check as you type or have a “spell-check before sending” setting. Sending large files or pictures. Don’t clog up your recipient’s mailbox—ask before sending big files. Sending e-mail without a “subject” line or with a vague subject line. Be specific.A subject that reads “Looking forward to dinner Saturday!” will get more attention than one that reads “hi” or “see you soon?” A blank subject line may get no attention at all.
