Abstract (sommario):
Myristica fatua is a critically endangered tree with medicinal novel compounds viz. Lignan and Diaryl nonanoids having in vitro cytotoxic activities against breast cancer. Vateria macrocarpa also is a critically endangered medicinal tree which is the source of an anti-bacterial gum‘Kundirigum’. The destructive harvesting of these two species, restricted habitat and climate changes etc. pose serious threat to their survival. The present study was therefore conducted to raise clonal genetic stock of these species by induced rooting of differentially aged Vateria macrocarpa stem cuttings and air layering twigs of Myristica fatua with the aid of different auxins (IAA, IBA and NAA) under different concentrations. The cuttings of Myristica fatua and air layering twigs of Vateria macrocarpa exhibited 70% of rooting success under NAA-1000 ppm concentration with 65 – 75% RH and 30- 35?C.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Vateria indica L. is an endemic arborescent recalcitrant tree species, native to the South-Western-Ghats of India. The natural regeneration process of the species is hindered by many factors including seed recalcitrance. Recently the species has been categorised as vulnerable since the population is fragmented and rapidly declining. Seed development is a highly complicated process which involves the interaction between phytohormones which regulate the process at different stages of morphogenesis. The orthodox seed development is marked by three distinct stages such as histodifferentiation, reserve accumulation and drying but in recalcitrant seeds, drying phase is absent. Recalcitrant seeds show marked differences from orthodox seeds in development. The onset of different stages is marked by a definite peaking and lowering of phytohormones and the hormonal pattern varies in orthodox and recalcitrant seeds. The present study was conducted to understand the interplay of phytohormones during embryogeny and the following natural embryo desiccation in the recalcitrant seeds of Vateria indica L. The present study revealed that the embryogeny and embryo drying in the recalcitrant seeds of Vateria indica L. shows a striking dissimilarity with the characteristic pattern of hormonal flux in orthodox seeds.

Abstract (sommario):
Vateria indica Linn. is an important resin yielding soft wood tree species, distributed throughout the Western Ghats. This species is considered as one of the vulnerable tree species and is endemic to the Western Ghats. Seed grading is one of the important components of forest nursery and it has advantages such as early enhancement and uniformity in seed germination. The present study was conducted to understand the effect of fruit size on seed germination, seedling vigour and biomass in Vateria indica. Matured fruits were separated and graded into two categories, i.e., smaller fruits (diameter < 4.5 cm) and bigger fruits (diameter > 4.5 cm). Results showed that the germination was early and uniform among bigger seeds than smaller ones. Seedling growth characters such as seedling height, collar diameter, number of leaves and seedling biomass characters such as fresh and dry weight of shoot and root showed significant differences between these two categories. Root and Shoot biomass showed significant variation where bigger fruits produced higher shoot and root biomass (1.83 and 0.80g) as compared to small ones (1.94 and 0.49g). This might be due to the presence of more maternal resources in the fruits. These results indicated that bigger sized fruit of Vateria indica performed better in terms of seedling vigour and biomass. However, fruit size more than 4.5 cm in diameter can be graded to get higher percent germination and uniform seedling growth. Most of the growth and biomass characteristics showed positive and significant association with fruit size, indicating that bigger sized fruits yield taller and bigger seedlings.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction: One of the most feared complications after cephalic duodeno-pancreatectomy remains pancreatic fistula. In recent years, various methods of pancreatico-digestive reconstruction were performed in order to reduce the rate of pancreatic fistula. One of these methods is pancreatico-gastric reconstruction by using two purse string threads. Case report: We present in this article a patient with jaundice with mixed etiology: tumoral and lithiasic. Subjectively, the patient accused sclerose-skin-jaundice, right upper quadrant and epigastric pain, nausea and vomiting. Computed tomography revealed dilatation of intraand extrahepatic bile ducts, a dilated Wirsung duct and a tumor at the biliopancreatic confluence, leading to a suspicion of vaterian ampulom. Upper endoscopy revealed a tumor protruding in the descending duodenal segment. Intraoperatively a tumor suggestive of vaterian ampulom and duct stones was shown. Surgical treatment consisted of coledocolitotomy, cephalic duodeno-pancreatectomy with pancreatic-gastric anastomosis, performed by using two purse string threads. The postoperative evolution was favorable. Conclusion: Pancreatico-gastric anastomosis using two purse string threads is a simple, safe and quick procedure, avoiding the application of sutures through the pancreatic parenchyma and thus reducing the rate of pancreatic fistula.

Abstract (sommario):
Beachrock (Br) is encountered on the coastal zones, playing an important but also complex role in their morphodynamic evolution. Although Br has been widely studied, two important issues require further investigation. The first concerns the importance of the interaction of the dynamically changing coastal environment with the temporal changing surficial and underground hydrogeological balance. The second has to do with the spatial distribution and the evolution of Br with respect to the specific “host” coastal zone geo environment. This paper designates the electrical resistivity method as a tool that contribute in arguing in the abovementioned issues. The research comprised subsurface measurements with the DC resistivity method along two profiles located on Vatera beach (Lesvos Island), where there is a significant Br outcrops. Twelve geoelectric soundings were carried out using the Axial Pole-Dipole electrode array. The electrical resistively measurements permitted an indirect estimation of TDS, which depicts the coastal interface of fresh water - sea water. The interpreted geoelectric model shows two thin formations attributed to Br. The first is the inland extension of the Br outcrop and the second it is believed to be a primary stage of Br build up.

Abstract (sommario):
Vaterita. CMC. ABSTRACTIn the last decades, advances in the field of applied sciences and technologies have emerged, with research in the innovative and multidisciplinary area known as nanobiotechnology, referring to technologies in which matter is manipulated at the atomic and molecular scales to create new materials with different functional characteristics. common materials. The development of these technologies for application in biological systems aims to enable the practical use of this knowledge in the areas of health. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a promising therapy for the treatment of various diseases, based on a photoprocess where a photosensitizer is activated by visible light, at an appropriate wavelength, in the presence of molecular oxygen. This combination is responsible for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and singlet oxygen, leading to the death of the target tissue due to a cascade of biological events. However, many of the photosensitizers have low solubility in a physiological environment, so it is necessary to use a controlled release system. In this context, the process of synthesis of precipitated microparticles of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) stands out in a controlled manner, seeking to favor the nucleation and the growth of a specific CaCO3 polymorph. The objective of the work was to control the parameters in the synthesis of microparticles, such as supersaturation of solutions, agitation, addition of stabilizing agents, seeking the ideal conditions for obtaining spherical microparticles in the vaterite phase (µ-CaCO3). The evaluation of the protocols was assisted by scanning electron microscopy in order to determine the process that reached the stabilization of the vaterite phase. Keywords: CaCO3. Vaterite. CMC. Abstract (sommario):
Stereoscopic dissection of seeds in different stages of development allows morphological study of late embryogenesis in large-seeded spermatophytes. Using this method, late embryogenesis is studied in three species of Dipterocarpaceae, viz., Hopea ponga (Dennst.) Mabb., Vateria indica Linn., and Vatica chinensis Linn. Configuration of the mature embryo in the seed is largely a result of spatiotemporal growth adjustments in all three species. Thus, the kind of folding of the cotyledons and the position of the embryonic hypocotyl (radicle) in the mature embryo are largely determined by the position of the embryo inside the ovule (seed) cavity early in development. Late embryogenic studies in other species of Dipterocarpaceae and other angiosperms are desirable. Such studies would help in understanding causal morphology and structural homology of embryos.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Vateria indica L., is an important endemic vulnerable tree of Western Ghats. Seed myco-flora of V. indica collected from different locations of Western Ghats in Karnataka at different fruiting years was studied. Among all fungal isolates, Macrophomina phaseolina was most abundant (16.92%) on the seed samples causing mortality in germinating seeds. The mycelial growth of this fungus was observed predominantly on collar region of radicle in geminating seeds. Infected roots were rotted from region of pathogen occurrence and further, infected tissues were discoloured with the progress of disease. Seeds treated with fungal suspension carried infection on radicle of germinating seeds and hindered the survival of seedling. Though, M. phaseolina is known for its pathogenicty in most of the agricultural crops, its impact on V. indica seed health and seedling endurance was proved for the first time in this study.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: To investigate the neuroprotective and memory-boosting properties of ethanol extract of Vateria indica bark on scopolamine-mediated defects in learning and memory in young mice. Methods: The ethanol extract of V. indica bark was prepared via Soxhlet extraction and subjected to qualitative and quantitative phytochemical assessment. The acute toxicity of the extract was also evaluated in mice. Six groups of 3-month-old Swiss albino mice (6 per group) were used: normal control, negative control, piracetam group, 250 mg/kg V. indica extract alone group, 500 mg/kg V. indica extract alone group, 250 mg/kg V. indica extract + scopolamine group and 500 mg/kg V. indica extract + scopolamine group. The mice were pretreated with piracetam (standard nootropic drug) or varied doses of the extract for 14 days prior to induction of amnesia. With the exception of normal control group, amnesia induction using scopolamine (3 mg/kg) i.p. on day 14 at 1½ h after the last extract dose. Mice in normal and negative control groups received 0.5 % tragacanth orally at a dose of 10 mL/kg. Cognitive deficit was assessed using elevated plus maze (EPM), step-down avoidance, and Morris water maze (MWM) tests. Results: Qualitative phytochemical screening of V. indica bark extract showed flavonoids, phenolics, glycosides, tannins, carbohydrate, saponins and steroids. The total phenol and total flavonoid contents were 580.96 ± 0.95 mg GAE/g extract and 66.89 ± 0.56 mg RE/g extract, respectively. The mice tolerated the extract up to 5000 mg/kg bwt. They all survived during and after the acute toxicity study and no significant changes in appearance or general behavior were noticed. The extract significantly enhanced learning and memory, and improved spatial recognition in scopolamine-induced amnesic mice (p < 0.05). Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and levels of dopamine and noradrenaline were markedly higher in negative control mice than in normal control, but were significantly reduced after pretreatment with ethanol extract of V. indica bark (p < 0.05). The results of histopathological examination provided evidence in support of the protective effect of the extract on hippocampal and cortical neurons. Conclusion: Pretreatment with ethanol extract of V. indica bark confers neuroprotection and enhances memory in young amnesic mice. Therefore, the extract of the plant can potentially be develpoed for the management of degenerative brain conditions.
